anon sent:  In canon, why do you think Tony is attracted to women that are always trying to kill him (not always) but it is very common of him to fall in love with toxic people.
and a lot of these go beyond just plain toxic into outright borderline abusive (if not physically than definitely emotionally), and it applies to more than just romantic relationships, he’s had friendships that were also pretty fucking toxic.  but also you’ll note most of these exceptionally toxic relationships happened or began when he was pretty young, and i honestly feel like tony doesn’t/didn’t know how to spot the red flags being too eager to have someone, anyone, care about him.  he was/is love-starved in a way that i don’t think is necessarily easy to explain on a good day, much less in a way that tony, despite his otherwise keen awareness of self (even if that awareness of self is mostly internal) has ever been able to put his metaphorical thumb on.  i think he has gotten better about being able to spot them (i think in some ways he’s a touch more cynical about love and friendships than he used to be and therefore a little more critical and less likely to stick around in a bad situation than he was at one point - you could argue kathy dare actually gave him a terrible wake up call on the importance of boundaries and also his life just in general has kind of...rubbed the squeaky, shiny new off of him).
tony has a lot of self-image, self worth, and self esteem issues, and it’s hitched to the wagon side by side with his desperation to have someone love him, especially after iron man?  because if you also look at most of these relationships, these have been women who generally refuse to accept iron man, iron man’s place and importance in tony’s life, and in some ways try to make him choose between iron man and them.  like he trips over his own feet when it comes to looking for it, there’s a string of ladies he’s tried and tried to - and i hate to put it this way - love him the way he so easily loves them, but tony is...kind of shitty at this whole chemistry business, if you want me to be honest.  it’s not just a pretty face, he fell in love with whitney despite her trying to scare him off with her facial scars.  it’s not a flashy lifestyle - i don’t really think he and gretl were anything more than friends, but they were each other’s rocks to cling to when they were living on the streets together and i know he loved her in his own way as best he could at that time.  he looks for it in places it will literally never work - roxy gilbert, for example, their core beliefs were radically different from each other.
like...i think tony sells himself cheap, you get me?  he has these long strings of being single and literally the first person that comes along and shows him a little attention, and he’s all in for a hot minute, and once upon a time, it used to be that it was a long - ridiculously long - time before he’d have enough and call it quits with someone.  marianne rodgers, kathy dare, both examples of him really going Through It until he finally threw in the towel.  hell, he still kind of does that (and that’s ignoring the bullshit cantwell’s shitting out in the current iron man run).  like he’s always vacilitated between oh i can’t tie anyone to me i could die at any minute and believing he doesn’t deserve that kind of thing because of his health or because he feels like he doesn’t deserve it, and then he meets someone and goes absolutely crazy for them for a hot minute until they ultimately prove to be a bad fit and he gets tired of being miserable and-
and that’s it, really.  i just think tony has no people sense when it comes to like.  overall spotting a bad situation involving love coming down the road.  for all he’s a futurist, in reality, when it’s something he’s trying to be serious about with dating/a relationship, he’s just...bad at it.  and he’s so desperate for that contact he puts up with things he shouldn’t have to, which leads to those toxic relationships that he seems to stay in until he just can’t anymore.  basically, tldr:  tony desperately wants to be loved, and there are people out there that have taken advantage of him for it, and he’s not as socially well-adjusted as his public persona would have you believe.

Sometimes it's okay to not fit in: Writing in the liminal spaces
Sometimes it’s okay to not fit in: Writing in the liminal spaces
While I was doing my five-minute break from work today, I pulled up YouTube and saw a video about feeling like you don’t belong by Marianne Cantwell And it was all about her book, which came from her experience. But her talk was about how some of us aren’t terribly good at fitting in and that’s okay. As a writer, I’ve felt this. And as a person, I’ve felt this. I almost quit my MFA during…

A fool-proof method for turning any career weak point into a strength-- and utilizing that strength to find a task you're actually proficient at and love|Company Insider
Tumblr media
Thanks to Marianne Cantwell
Marianne Cantwell. Ever tried to recognize your "most significant superpowers" and drawn a blank? I understand the sensation. For many years I thought my strengths were those things I was sort of proficient at, however didn't entirely love-- things like being analytical or writing reports the board seemed to like.
When it came to pinning down my greatest strengths, that one talent or "superpower" that would make things zoom forward-- or finally land me doing something I enjoyed with higher success than ever-- I secretly questioned if I even had among those.
It turns out that I did.
The method I discovered it wasn't by following the old recommendations of simply looking at my highlights or believing favorable.
Rather, it was through a counterproductive method that I have actually given that successfully used with countless individuals going through profession shifts. It goes something like this: If you want to discover your finest strengths, take a look at your weak points.
A weak point is a characteristic that is merely not valued in your office. It may been seen as a liability, joked about as an individual quirk, or seen as a "point for enhancement."
I used to think that one of my weak points was discovering it difficult to concentrate on day-to-day detailed jobs (where repetition and accuracy were key) and rather wishing to change how things were done. I continuously came up with new ideas for how we might enhance the status quo.
My employer wasn't interested: He desired me to concentrate on the task at hand-- which had little to do with creating modification. My low detail orientation and continuous requirement to alter things was a substantial weakness-- the sort you get sent out on training courses to get rid of!-- when I was supposed to just keep things moving quietly.
I changed professions into consultancy. Now my job was to see how things could be done differently, push the status quo, and see the big image (without getting slowed down in small details!). That old weak point, which I had spent years attempting to keep down, became a strength that companies were paying lots of cash for! Plus, I made more impact in the first month than I had in years. This was fun.
As we state in my book "Be A Totally Free Variety Human": "Weak points are just strengths in the wrong environment." The parts of your personality you try to hide away at work may just be the parts that hold the key to your surprise superpowers.
Here's how to find and use yours:
1. Pinpoint your weaknesses
WAYHOME studio/Shutterstock Jot down 5 things that you believe are weak points
. Draw up 5 things that you presently consider weaknesses. Include things you can't assist doing, tell yourself you must stop doing, or desire you might change and do better. My list included "low information orientation," while some examples I have actually seen have actually consisted of "not good at precision," "too boring/uncreative," or perhaps "too social/chatty instead of focused."
2. Get under the surface
skynesher/Getty Images Think of what lags the
weakness. Ask yourself," What is truly behind this weakness?"
For example, if your weak point is "I can't concentrate on one task at a time," the driver behind that might be "I enjoy range and my mind moves fast." Getting to the characteristic behind the "weakness" lets you believe and discuss it in a more well balanced way.
3. Flip it
Thanks to Hero Images/Getty Images Flip being too social into forming strong connections with individuals.
Now list situations where this quality would be a benefit. The person who is too social may say, "A location that needs someone to form strong connections with customers or groups."
No example is too small-- the objective here is to turn how you see this trait.
4. Name it
Chris Hondros/Getty Images Name and document the strength you discovered. Now write down
the strength you unmasked-- like "adaptable," "individuals individual," and so on
5. Modification the story
Nitat Termmee/Getty Images Own your self descriptions. When you've recognized the strengths, change the story. How do you discuss this? There's a huge difference between "I'm too compulsive" vs. "I'm strong on details and make certain things never ever get missed out on." Or "I'm so scattered" vs. "I'm a thinker."
If you don't own your self descriptions, another person will write them for you. Take control of how you speak about this to others and yourself.
6. Get up and prove it
Thanks to Marianne CantwellMarianne Cantwell.
Create chances to utilize your superpowers positively. For instance, as mentioned above, among my weaknesses is low information orientation-- I am not the individual you wish to check your report for missed out on commas! However I found out that weak point was masking the strength of strategic thinking and storytelling. I don't constantly see the small information as I'm focusing on the entire photo and how it comes together as a story.
So I started to volunteer for more presentations-- consisting of the ones other employee didn't wish to do. I got a credibility for this, did little projects on the side of my task to dive deeper into the things I was delighted about, and likewise stopped going for functions where I was evaluated mostly on fine-tooth-comb detail precision. I just chose chances where I could do more of my newly unearthed strengths. Quickly I was paid and valued for the parts of me I utilized to think I needed to leave at the door.
So lots of individuals spend their career mistaking their greatest thing for a liability-- or just ignoring it-- but it doesn't have to be that way.
Whether you wish to remain in your role or are aiming to alter course, the truth is that people who thrive in a competitive world and those who are happiest in their work aren't those who stuck to what they were simply proficient at. Rather, they do what the very best leaders have always done and got curious to discover their fantastic.
Your weak point might be your greatest strength in camouflage. Modification the video game to give yourself an edge by looking in the location the majority of people never think-- or attempt-- to look.

Reading List
In my last blog entry I mentioned the book How to do Everything and Be Happy and how it made a positive influence on my monthly schedule. Following up on it, I thought this would be a good opportunity to provide a list of some of the books that I have found helpful or interesting over the past few years. They range from productivity hacks to using behavioural science to improve your day to a few that are from way out in left field. Curious? Good! Let’s get started …
How to do Everything and Be Happy (Peter Jones): This is one of the books that kicked things off for me, making me realise that there are simple changes you can make to put yourself in control of your own life.  The writing style is engaging and is a good first port of call if you’re interested in adding a bit more organisation and happiness into your life.
How to Have a Good Day: The essential toolkit for a productive day at work and beyond (Caroline Webb): In a related vein, How to Have a Good Day uses a solid scientific base to examine many aspects of modern working life, with helpful tips and tricks to help you construct a better work day. This book will make you look at your day-to-day interactions in a whole new light.
59 Seconds: Think a little, change a lot (Richard Wiseman): Don’t feel you have enough time in the day to read the other books on this list? Then this one is for you. These bitesize nuggets of behaviour change are worth considering.
Do It Tomorrow and Other Secrets of Time Management (Mark Forester): This and the author’s Get Everything Done and Still Have Time to Play take a new approach to time management.  I freely admit that my current job is not compatible with the system he describes, but if you have more control over your schedule, then this is definitely worth a look.
The 12 Week Year (Brian P. Moran and Michael Pennington): This is a completely different approach to productivity, goal setting, and scheduling than I’ve come across previously, I am still trying to get my head around the system (it’s not that complicated, I’ve just had a rather full plate recently!), but I can see how it can help increase both work productivity and personal accomplishments ... if you can make the time to implement it.
The Power of Habit (Charles Duhigg): Nearly 40% of what we do each day is down to habit. This books provides a great overview of the habit cycle—cue, routine, and reward—and the wiring of the brain that allows habits to form and to be overwritten.  [Related to this is S.J. Scott’s Habit Stacking, but I prefer the approachable science behind Duhigg’s book].
Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us (Daniel Pink): What makes you tick? This book provides an excellent background to the science of motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic drivers.  For example, job satisfaction tends to be motivated by the intrinsic factors of autonomy, mastery, and sense of purpose – not the size of the pay check.
Flow: The Psychology of Happiness (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi): This is a classic book that examines the commonalities that occur when people are so wrapped up in an activity that they want nothing more than to continue doing it. Why do some activities cause this “flow” state and some do not? I am only about halfway through the book at the moment (and some of it is hit or miss to be honest), but if you’ve followed me this far, it is a good companion to many of the books on this list.
Authentic: How to be yourself and why it matters (Stephen Joseph): I think many of us spend our lives compartmentalising ourselves, for example by presenting one face at work and another at home. Yet the tension between the two can be stressful and difficult to manage in the long term. This book helps focus on what actually drives us as individuals, and I certainly found the exercises eye opening and thought provoking. It also has given me something to strive for: eudaimonia, living life to its fullest potential.
Inside the Nudge Unit: How small changes can make a big difference (David Halpern):  The idea behind “nudging” is in the sub-title: small changes can yield a big difference when applied to various social problems.  For example, requiring people to opt out of a desired behaviour (e.g. enrolling on a pension scheme) instead of opting in leads to greater uptake. This book originates from Nudge (which I have not read yet) and is a good overview of how the techniques have been tested and applied in the UK.
Black Box Thinking: The surprising truth about success (Matthew Syed): This was a standout from my reading over the past year. It makes you reconsider failure and how an organisation’s approach to mistakes can either help or hinder it on a systemic level.  Incredibly thought provoking.
Be a Free-Range Human (Marianne Cantwell): If you are tired of being trapped in the career cage and are seeking an escape, or are just starting to test the waters of life outside the cubicle, then this book is for you. I have read a number of books about starting a business or freelancing, and this is hands down my favourite.
Making a Living Without a Job (Barbara Winter): As I said, I have read numerous books on this topic!  This is another very good one; sometimes it feels a little behind the times (I don’t recall the internet or social media getting a mention in the edition I read), but she has some solid ideas for how to escape the 9-to-5.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking:  As an extreme introvert, I found this a fascinating read about how culture shapes whether introverts or extroverts are prized and how each deals with the world in very different ways.  A must read for introverts or people who live with, work with, or teach introverts.
The Big Necessity: Adventures In the World of Human Waste (Rose George): I did say some of these would be from left field … I was probably predisposed to like this book as I spend quite a bit of my time thinking and writing about a different type of human waste (i.e. litter), but the importance of proper hygiene and sewage, and its place in history, makes this both an eye-opening and engaging book.
All of these come with the caveat that the books are products of their time. Some behavioural science studies have recently been shown to have less of an effect than originally supposed, and the jury still seems to be out on techniques like priming. Like I mentioned last week, be curious: don’t believe everything hook, line, and sinker, and instead dig a little deeper if something sounds too good to be true. And, finally, these are all Amazon affiliate links; feel free to use them or go elsewhere if you’re interested in reading these books.
