Create a Healthy Home for the New Year!

How To Keep Your Home Clean and Allergy Free During the Winter Months.

The change of seasons means chillier days which also brings on the surge of winter allergies. If you are spending more time indoors, you might notice an increase in allergy symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, and itchy, watery eyes. We have outlined some tips to keep your home allergy-free and your family healthy during the cold weather!

Buy an Air Purifier: Buying an air purifier for your home will improve your indoor air quality while protecting your family from airborne allergens. Air purifiers use a fan to pull air through high-efficiency filters that mechanically trap particles. This type of air purifier is environmentally friendly because no ozone is produced. During winter months, you will be inside more often and it is worth investing in the air that you breathe!

Change All Bedding and Vacuum Floors Regularly:  Dust mites are very common indoor allergens that are found in pillows, mattresses, carpeting, and furniture. You can cover mattresses, box springs, and pillows in allergen-proof covers. Also, remember to wash your sheets and pillowcases in very hot water at least once a week. Vacuuming your home regularly can nab pesky dust mites in carpeting, furniture, and improve the general cleanliness of your home to reduce illness and indoor allergies! Make sure to clean the dust out of your vacuum to prevent old dust particles from being released! As a general rule, hardwood floors are easier to clean and you can wash area rugs to eliminate allergens.

Monitor Humidity Levels: Humidifiers are used in the winter to combat dryness by adding moisture to the air. Humidity levels must be monitored because mold and dust mites will grow in indoor areas that are too moist. Humidity meters can be purchased to keep humidity levels below 50 percent and a dehumidifier or moist fan can be used to minimize moisture in bathrooms and kitchens.

Don’t Use Chemical Cleaners: Replace your chemical-based cleaners with cleaners that are natural or plant-based. Cutting down on chemical cleaners will greatly improve air quality and reduce the amount of irritants that can cause sinus and nasal inflammation. Many natural cleaners include baking soda, water, vinegar, soaps, and soda water. These items are much better for your surfaces, health, AND everyday items that you should already have in your pantry!

Avoid Pet Dander: Pets also spend more time indoors during the winter and pet allergens are found in the saliva and dander of cats and dogs. Bathing your pet can help reduce the amount of dander they shed, and you should always wash your hands afterwards to prevent any dander from coming into contact with your eyes or nasal passages. Keeping pets off your bed and vacuuming carpets often will reduce allergens as well.

It’s all about knowing which new construction upgrade matters most, and which doesn’t. Your kitchen – perhaps THE most popular space in your entire home. Now, we know some people treat this space as their kingdom and domain, while others see it more of a place they’re stuck longer than they wish. 

BUT – if there’s one thing either side can agree on, it’s that keeping the kitchen uncluttered makes everyone’s life a little easier. 

Follow some of these tips to create some useful storage space and open up your counters to make prepping, cooking and cleaning that much easier, and even more enjoyable. All Sorts of Storage

First and foremost, be sure not to pass on the sides – of your kitchen cabinets that is! Stacking obscure or non-matching pots and pans is a sure-fire way to eat up cabinet storage, so installing a short-rail or towel bar to the side of a cabinet can open up these surfaces and allow for your more frequently used pieces to be more easily accessible. This goes for that under-the-sink space as well! Keep your cleaning products hung and out of the way – while making use of the false drawer as well for unsightly sponges or drain plugs to get tucked out of the way.

Racks and shelving systems can also be easily installed that will help to organize your collections, giving various sized plates, bowls and dishes their own spaces, while all staying neatly within the same cabinet.

For pull out drawers, you can use ¼ inch dividers to create cubbies for organizing your utensils. Some of these interlocking systems allow widths and sizes to be easily adjusted, accounting for accessories of all shapes and sizes to group together as need be.

Nestled between both the Chesapeake and the Potomac, and adjacent to the Nation’s Capital, lies what we call home; the “Western Shore”, the slightly-secluded rolling suburbia that is: Southern Maryland! Over our thirty-five plus years in this area, we’ve seen the influx of neighborhoods and communities bring more and more residents to these wonderful towns, all while that quaint, small-town charm remains ever-present. St. Mary’s County

Situated less than an hour outside the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C. is St. Mary’s County, home to just over 110,000 residents. As the southernmost county in the region, this area boasts a nearly 500-mile shoreline encompassing pieces of both the Potomac, and Chesapeake! From early Spring through late Autumn, this peninsula will bring the best of the scenic outdoors to the forefront with over five water-based state parks, each with their own unique trails to hike, and abundant opportunities to fish, camp, bike and more! 

Point Lookout State Park, one of the states most popular parks, is located at the very southern tip of the county, providing a picturesque backdrop to the Chesapeake. Numerous boat launches allow for access to the water, whether for sport or leisure, boat or kayak! Its long fishing pier becomes a popular spot to cast a line.. 

..while the swimming beach allows for family fun, picnics and more between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Over 240 acres of land is set aside for hunting during open season, and also on-site are over 140 campsites available for renting throughout the year!

Opportunities to explore the areas past are also available at the Civil War Museum, neighbored by Fort Lincoln, as well as Point Lookout Lighthouse!

Acting as the hub of St. Mary’s County is Leonardtown – a thriving, historic area with numerous shopping, dining and scenic sites for all ages (and also home to our Clarks Rest Community <http://clarksrest.com/>!). Noted for it’s thriving Art & Entertainment district, with many galleries right downtown, the town provides a bevy of activities for residents to engage in, including the Port of Leonardtown Winery and the shopping district, home to numerous local small-town businesses including Larry’s Comic Book Café, The Good Earth Natural Foods, Co., Heritage Chocolates, and many more!

Along the water lies the Leonardtown Wharf, which is home to kayaking and fishing, as well as a beautiful park in which to roam with family, friends or pets!

To truly indulge on the sense of community, family-friendly events occur throughout the year, including Leonardtown First Fridays on the first Friday of each month, allowing residents a sampling of the local fare.

Charles County

With its history dating back to its chartering more than 350 years ago, Charles County is a vibrant community home to over just 1.8 million, situated the closest to the Beltway, also making the local community very popular amongst commuters. Anchored by nearly 300 miles of shoreline between the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers, Charles County offers a plethora of opportunities to hit the water via boat, Jet Ski or just to swim! 

Fishing, sailing, picnicking, hiking & biking are plentiful with 30-county parks accounting for nearly 3,600 acres – along with 3 state parks and 4 wildlife areas accounting for nearly 10,000 acres!

Further recreational opportunities come from Capital Clubhouse, offering a 90,000 square-foot ice rink, a multi-purpose field, 30-foot climbing wall, eatery, summer camps, and an on-site sporting equipment shop. Golfers will take easily to the numerous courses in the area, including the White Plains Golf Course, Hawthorne Country Club, and Swan Point Yacht and Country Club.

Is golf not your sport? Not to worry. Charles County is home to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs! 

This baseball team is part of the Independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Regency Furniture Stadium, their home field, offers exciting games throughout the summer months, and is also home to numerous concerts, expos, and entertainment events throughout the year!

In La Plata (home to our Olivers Crossing <http://marrickhomes.com/olivers-crossing/> & Ridge Grove <http://marrickhomes.com/ridge-grove-estates/> Communities), you’ll also find an exceptional, local education opportunity with the College of Southern Maryland, a regionally accredited community college of nearly 25,000 students across the Southern MD corridor.

Calvert County

Running along the Chesapeake, and, more casually known, as the “Charm of the Chesapeake” is Calvert County. This area is home to numerous waterside communities with a diverse set of pristine waterways and natural parks.

Keeping with the common theme of ocean shores, Calvert County offers a fantastic variety of parks that provide fishing, boating, and watersport activities, including Breezy Point Beach & Campground, North Beach Public Beach and Calvert Cliffs State Park

- which is home to more than 600 species of fossils dating back to its formation nearly 15 million years ago! Swimming, picnicking, hunting, bird watching and wetland boardwalks are present all along the coast, providing relaxation and entertainment years round.

Prepare For Winter With Our Total Home Checklist

As we reach the 12th and final month of the calendar year, our temperatures will finally begun to lead us into those colder months of the year, with that inevitable winter chill right around the corner. Before December or January frosts creep their way onto our front lawns and into the nooks and crannies of our homes, it’s of utmost importance to go through the seasonal checklist to make sure your home is ready for whatever Mother Nature (or Jack Frost) tries to throw our way this upcoming Winter! 

Use our checklist to ensure you’ve got your bases covered, with ample time for any necessary maintenance that might be needed.

The Exterior

Work your way from the outside of the home, in. First, and most importantly, once the leaves have fallen from the trees, make sure to break out your clippers to prune nearby trees of thin or weakening branches that may be liable to break or impact your home with wind or moderate snowfall. With the limbs bare, you’ll be able to get a much better visual on where and what to cut. Follow this up by making sure to clear your gutters and drain pipes of any debris and buildup from the aforementioned branches. Without doing so, poor draining can cause freezing and blockages, leading to potential leaks and much larger headaches down the line. 

While you, or a professional, is up the ladder, be sure to inspect the roof for any inconsistencies or noticeable damage. Any escaping heat combined with winter temperatures can lead to ice dams; the refreezing of ice and snow on parts of the roof and/or under it. Making sure the attic region of your home has adequate insulation, as well as ventilation, is key to preventing this issue.

In preparation for snowfall itself, investing in a roof rake may be a necessity as well. Given snowfall in the DMV region touches polar opposites from year to year, this tool could prove itself vital in a big snowfall to prevent large masses of snow from freezing and damaging parts of your roof.

If you have an individual driveway, be sure to square away any scheduled plowing with your respective company ahead of time, as well as bags of sand and salt for your walkways and steps to assist in removing ice or snow buildup – the less shoveling, the better, right?

Fireplace Essentials

Winter, for all the downsides it may bring, can also bring that cozy comfort associated with huddling by the fireplace on a cold evening. Make sure your fireplace is prepped for use after months of inactivity by calling a professional chimneysweeper to clean-out debris from season’s past and anything else that a chemical-packed log might miss. Additionally, investing in chimney cap, if not already installed, is a great option to prevent debris, as well as animals from moving in and constructing their homes in your chimney.

Make sure to stock up on firewood early – it’ll save you money ahead of time, and also the trouble of driving out to buy more during a snowstorm!

Moving Inside

Making sure you have weather stripping squared away within all your doors, windows and vents in absolutely crucial in helping insulate your home throughout the coming months. Available at most hardware stores, most stripping is a DIY breeze and helps ensure your home maintains, and retains, warmth. Leaks and drafts can cause heat to escape, leading your heating bill to skyrocket.  In keeping with home energy efficiency, don’t forget to swap out light duvet covers and cotton sheets to thicker cashmere and flannel materials for staying warm. Layer throw rugs on flooring for a touch of winter décor while keeping your feet snug on cold winter nights.

Protect your pipes! Arguably the worst disaster could come from a burst pipe in the dead of winter, with an average repair cost of more than $5,000. Be sure to work your way from top floor to bottom and double over for any exposed or vulnerable piping, which can be wrapped them with insulation. Most hardware stores carry inexpensive foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves for pipes, which are easy to install. Be sure to shut off all exterior faucets and lines to prevent freezing on those, as well.

Prevent exterior door locks from freezing or sticking by spraying them with a powdered-graphite lubricant. Make sure to address any storm doors by removing the screens and replacing them with glass panels to prevent any damage and further insulate your home.
