Also sorry I'm thinking about all the linguistic details that POB managed to cram into this book. Specifically the way the coffee house is called Joselito's (Spanish diminuitive for José 'Joseph') but Stephen, when speaking in Catalan, refers to the waiter as "Jep" (Catalan diminuitive for Josep 'Joseph'), and also that he uses "the Catalan of the island" which I'm not sure if POB uses that phrase intentionally but I'm guessing he does - Stephen is not from the Balearic Islands, and would certainly not speak Balearic Catalan as his native dialect, so while in English the line seems to convey that he's at home (he's speaking his native language - and this is true), the fact that even in his native language he's still chameleoning into another dialect feels very interesting, IDK
#guy who simply cannot be at home anywhere!!!!!#i think that catalan is the closest he has to a native language but even that's tenuous#AND while i have opinions on the dialects i think he prefers i don't think he has one which feels 'native' bc he was passed around so much#idk. stephen maturin homeless wanderer at the start of these books many thoughts#perce rambles#aubreyad#The Creative Endeavor and other aubreyad nonsense#also i COMPLETELY lost the original train of this post which is that i appreciate what a master of switching between registers#pob is. he's one of the few native-english-speaker writers who i've read really do it well#just read white teeth and zadie smith is also a master of this though. and it's SO SO satisfying

DW Master fans of Tumblr, you won’t believe what my grandmother’s maiden name translates to in Italian…
#I just found this out and I’m so proud of myself tehehe#it translates to Master#dw#the master#doctor who#thoschei#it’s not maestro btw. it’s a rare Italian surname that derives from master craftsman#probably in an obscure dialect#italiano#this is a big deal to me bc my grandma practically raised me as a third parent so I feel connected to her name

I think the whole "but he was too busy burning them" thing doesn't really work for me because. Well. How often that happened? Like, no, seriosuly, how often was the Master's plot aimed at plain destruction? They'd sometimes resolve to this, in an Atreides "who can destroy a thing holds ultimate power" way, but how is "burning" the Master's modus operandi? Like, their thing is domination and control, destruction is mainly a means to an end. They're a sadist, and a sadist is as dependent on an object of torture as a masochist on a torturer. It's the same issue as with "lover of chaos" line, like what? The "obey me" guy? You don't have hierarchy in chaos, you can't be the master of anything.
Steven, my man, you have only yesterday reaffirmed yourself as one of the best closed story writers BBC has, but I think you're getting your typology of evil wrong.
Or just really don't like a likeable villain representing unpalatable power based kinds of villainy as opposed to good old trickstery.
#dw meta#the master#roxanne's degree pursuit therapy#you know going over my theoretical chapter and there's a lot of dialectics between order and chaos in festival conceptualizations

I find the dialect issue really interesting in Italian, like it’s been a hot second since I studied it (don’t want to get it mixed up with Spanish etc) but I used to be faaaairly profficient-ish. But Italian has some interesting stuff with dialect and language that is of course super political - absolutely I believe that the minority languages of Italy are LANGUAGES, not “dialects,” eg napolitano, Sicilian, Calabrian etc. However! That doesn’t stop the complicating factors that
a) many are (due to repression in part) somewhat unstable and there’s been clear linguistic pushes in the direction of standard Italian
b) many (not all) young people don’t speak their regional language (which is also geographically associated)
c) the minority languages are for the most part still related to Italian and lend easily to blending and mixed forms
d) the standard language in Italian classes for foreigners is that florentine standardized form and they will almost never tell you regional slang or alterations
in essence there’s a dual issue here: minority languages are called “dialects” in a way that is deeply politically loaded, but for many many speakers there is a kind of language spectrum between minority languages (or remnants and borrowings from minority languages and “standard” Italian) that created a lot of…. Actual dialects in modern spoken Italian
but anyway I do think this all encourages a situation where the reality is that the majority of Italian speakers have some kind of mixed form or where regional dialects affect the standard spoken form at LOT , so that when you learn Italian you’re like oh this is easy. I’m getting an a. I’m a b2. Why the fuck can I not understand anyone ever. What is this. Like the standard form/minority language binary are kind of two ends of a spectrum and class will prepare you for like, official tv channels and Dante but not talking. Italians can understand you and they tend to be very very friendly and accommodating in matching that official form and altering their words/grammar, but you can’t easily follow a lot of *their* conversations and daily pronunciation and the literary language is very ornate. There are also not so many resources for this kind of thing
#Learning Italian#I should get back to it at some point I used to be like. B2? I have my essays in it#I’m fascinated by dialects so this is super interesting but for learners it’s a pain#When I asked about college apps i was like do you do dialect? And no one ever did#There are people who learn Italian really well and master regional accents - those who move to Italy esp migrants - but as with Spanish#I’ve noticed the bar is kind of in the ground with anglophones#And there’s interesting stuff with Italian speakers I’ve met shocked anyone is learning their language#Interesting stuff with smaller city and region based linguistic attachments

Come on, loser. More books? You don't have to read Wittgenstein, Kant, and Hegel just 'cause Andy Gallagher did.
#okay so#i have copies of kant and hegel already#but i DON't have wittgenstein#and it'll have no bearing on anything but it--I want to dammit#god dammit#azazel's special children#master-slave dialectic might be helpful though#what's worse is that i think i can apply the concept of the master and evolving freed slave to both dean and cas#dean gives up on cas (sorta) in season 11... trying to be okay with things as they are and less dependent on cas for recognition#BUT see#the things is dean actually falls even deeper in love with him after that!#cas doesn't evolve past the need for recognition until season 15 and is in fact a slave to the need for appreciation deeply in s12-14#so they both circle the drain on this in terms of trying to let each other go but falling deeper in love w each other because#the push pull of the relationship evolves and rejuvenates over time#stupid philosophy hours

When British writers come up with an American character’s dialogue and give them the most painfully British things to say with their American accent and inflection and it makes the actor come off as stiff. :P
#The Oxford Murders (2008)#I mean it was a very well-done movie visually (that flowy choreographed camera work in the beginning WOW)#The plot was apparently hard to follow and it’s not just my lack of spoken dialogue comprehension and attention working against me#I always have to check reviews to make sure I’m not the only person having a hard time following a story#because I’ve been trained through life not to trust my own mind due to its faultiness…#Anyway: When Seldom said something like “…only mathematics can be proven. Basic statements like two plus two equals four#are the only things sure in this world” I— 💀 HELP no no no… one of the previous characters you played#would like to kiss this new character of yours on the mouth for what he just said— ashsisksnsksjjsjdjdmsksk#That is until you elaborated on it and then basically took the side of his persecutor… THAT sucked#And I know my speech right now does not come off as naturally as it once did (or is it) I have no idea#if this is my real voice or the absorption’s afterglow causing me to speak in such an uptight manner#but I don’t mind it#but I do mind it#because no matter what combination of words I use it doesn’t sound or feel as if I am the one speaking — I stitch together what I hear#or have I only been conditioned to think the way I speak isn’t natural because nobody in my immediate life speaks like this#Who says stitching together words into a gigantic quilt isn’t natural for me?#But that still leaves me with no soul. I’m Pete the Parrot. Or Bumblebee.#Maybe I shouldn’t speak or write; maybe I need to master visual telepathy#or a language comprised entirely of touch and eye movement#I always feel the need to create languages so I can express myself without falling into cliches and dialects#I want to be free of stereotypes#I’m tired of speaking this language… EXHAUSTED#I speak in predictable patterns and when I think I’m not using a pattern by being unpredictable; the unpredictability becomes a trend

this all to say how gallifreyan is as close to a second language for even as it can realistically be for someone who can’t actually interface with the telepathic subtext. which, honestly, mostly comes up once they’re out of time hell when their relationship to clara gets more and more antagonistic. whole conversations with missy (<- happy to make clara mad) that clara can’t follow because the tardis translation circuit isn’t built to translate gallifreyan and/or the doctor disabled it doing so. talking to the doctor in off-handed gallifreyan knowing that he’ll respond in kind without thinking for at least a few sentences before realizing it. it is completely petty, a way of even marking off something they share with the doctor (and the master, but clara is less likely to care about that) that clara doesn’t.
#a side effect of learning the language at the master’s side rather than the doctor’s is that even’s dialect also mimics the master’s.#which is. slightly uncomfortable for the doctor to hear coming out of their mouth. (partially because despite evidence he’s expecting them#to speak like him.)#maybe some day in the future if they and the doctor get to patch things up. even will mimic him more. its what they do.#make the people they love A Part Of Them. embedded in their body their language their. everything. (and the doctor is already in a lot of#ways. but the way they speak gallifreyan is purely the master’s. they sound like her.)#even and clara biting and killing and maiming each other as we speak. they are not friends.#dw oc

The Multifaceted Diamond of Freedom: Liberation, Transcendence, and Philosophical Inquiry – Part 2

Photo by Snapwire on Pexels.com Building upon this theological foundation, the subsequent sections of our inquiry embark on a crucial expansion. We now turn our attention to…
