Exclusive Interview: director Matthew López on Red, White & Royal Blue "it's really important to me that my first film has a Latin lead at its centre"
If the number of views for the trailer is anything to go by (7.2 million and counting), the anticipation is high for the film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel Red, White & Royal Blue, which premieres globally on Prime Video on Friday, August 11th. Fortunately for playwright Matthew López, who makes his feauture writing and directing debut with the project, he hadn’t quite grasped…

Nick goes out of his way to praise Taylor as an actor. He maybe did 5 interviews about the movie and in each one he talks about how Taylor was the perfect choice, how funny and smart he was and how well he understood the character. Taylor isn’t complimentary at all towards him other than saying they got on well. Similarly, Matthew goes on and on about Taylor becoming the character and transforming and then he has this really weird line he uses about Nick being “protective and holding the character” and it’s quite…. Minimizing and not at all how Nick describes his performance. Nick is for sure the third wheel in that group but he handled it well imo. He delivered every second he was on screen and shouldn’t be viewed as an afterthought.
I completely disagree with you. None of them are a "third wheel".
Taylor and Nicholas have very different acting methods. Neither is "superior" to the other, and Matthew never implies that. There's a difference between what it looks like to an outsider and what happens in the head of the actor. Matthew's comment about him being "protective of Henry" is a compliment. It says that he cherishes him as a character and that he cares about him deeply.
Something Nicholas has said a lot when asked about the role is how he relates a lot to the fear of being misperceived by those around him. Henry is a delicate character who's been through far more than he should have for a young man his age, due to his status as a royal. Nicholas was incredibly dedicated to expressing him as truthfully as he could. That's what Matthew means by saying he was "protective" of him.
Taylor "not being complimentary" toward Nick in his interviews does not mean anything about his opinions of his acting. He had a different focus for his response. That's it!
Plus, Nick had already been cast as Henry when Taylor was going up for the role. Finding someone to play Alex was a challenge that he and Matthew have talked about, so once they found Taylor, of course they were excited. Of course Nicholas was gushing about him, because he'd been reading opposite over a hundred other actors that didn't click. I can't imagine how relieved and excited he was when he met Taylor and it became clear that they had finally found Alex. Nick was waiting for Taylor to be found.
From Taylor's point of view, Nick was the solidified actor who was already, without question, in the movie. Nick has also played leads before in his films, whereas this was Taylor's first leading role. To put it sort of bluntly, Nicholas doesn't need to be told he's a good actor. He, and everyone who has seen his work, knows that already. Taylor on the other hand has much more to prove, since all of his prior roles were side characters and some of those films were questionable in quality. You can't truly judge an actor's skill if they're given half a deck to work with.
And again, just because Taylor talked more about their relationship as friends does not mean he doesn't ever acknowledge Nicholas' acting. He literally says he and Nick are each others' biggest supports when filming, and whenever they got out of a scene, they would start going back and forth discussing their performances. I'm sure that Taylor has given plenty of compliments to Nicholas regarding his acting.
This is the type of inane bullshit that people use to turn into some big thing, and it's not. Stop pitting them against each other, and stop inventing reasons to think there's any sort of animosity between them and/or Matthew.

Please read interviews and listen to podcasts about RWRB
I feel like a lot of people are missing the point of the movie, or the changes that were made. The love these people have put into it is amazing. I have read and listened to every thing about this movie. I already love the movie. But hearing Matthew Lopez talk about his first film is amazing! He has so much passion. Everyone on this project did it with love and care. He made it as he wanted to. He read the book and saw this movie in his own mind and that is what he made. You got to love it, it is the same thing we do with fan fiction. To say you absoluty hate it, baffels me. We need more movies like this. So please listen, read and learn. Thank you.

Adding on to more Red White and Royal Blue bullshit: The reason I am now SO set on believing this movie will be good is because of an interview I read with the director, Matthew Lopez. I trust this man IMPLICITLY for three reason and here they are:
One: he’s one of us. He’s a fan. He’s a HUGE fan, and he’s a QUEER fan, which is so important on so many levels.
Two: He TOOK HIS GODDAMN TIME editing and re-editing and going over and SLAVING OVER this goddamn movie. THEY FINISHED FILMING ALMOST A YEAR AGO. THIS MAN NAS PUT IN THR WORK. Taylor and Nicholas poured their souls into the acting and Matthew poured his soul into the cutting and piecing together. THIS MOVIE WILL BE A LABOUR OF LOVE FIGHT ME.
Three: I’ve said it, but let me elaborate: Matthew is LITERALLY us, a fan, a HUGE fan. According to that interview, he read the book and immediately knew he HAD to be the one to direct the movie, and that if he wasn’t he would cry. Can you count the number of times you’ve read a book and thought “damn I wish they’d make this a movie” AND THEN HE GOES AND SAYS WELP IF THEY WONT I WILL.
HES LIVIN TH DREAM
He’s bringing all our dreams to life as well fight me
This movie will be amazing FIGHT ME
ok I’m done now
TLDR: My faith in the red white and royal blue movie has been restored and also shot thru the roof and I need august to come yesterday

great interview with nick where he shares about:
the delicacy of identifying as straight and playing queer roles (he touches on this topic twice)
how much rehearsal and consideration went into his intimate scenes with taylor in rwrb, and their collaboration process with matthew lopez
working with the intimacy coordinator, robbie, on rwrb and then again on mary and george (where george sleeps with 14 different characters!)
hurting his ankle on set, and being glad for some rest after carrying the lead role on such a large project (he filmed 100 out of 109 days on mary and george)
the costuming choices on idea of you and how they wanted to create a new character (not harry styles)
how catchy the music is in the idea of you
how incredible it was to work with and learn from anne hathaway and julianne moore, who both brought different skill sets to the job
and so much more <3

TV Insider: ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Director Matthew López Shares Exciting Sequel Update
“I think the challenge of a sequel is that the stakes are higher than for the first film,” López said. “There isn’t a book, so you’re doing an original story. We like to say, at the risk of extreme exaggeration, that we’re doing a Godfather II here because the filmmaker and the novelist are collaborating on the second one.”
López and author Casey McQuiston are co-writing the film. “I hope, by now, the fans of the book trust me with the story. If they don’t, at least there’s Casey writing the movie with me,” he quipped.
In crafting a follow-up film, López noted that “the opportunities are evident as well as the perils. We’re having a lot of fun. We started daydreaming, and now we are actively writing a second film. Oh, the places we could go with it. I don’t know. Who knows? We’ll find out.”
McQuiston did release a collector’s edition of their novel that included a chapter in Henry’s POV. This bonus chapter includes a time jump and gives a glimpse into Alex and Henry’s life as an engaged couple. When asked whether or not the sequel will take elements of this extra chapter, López cryptically said, “It’s possible. Anything is possible.”
The Tony Award-winner made his feature directorial debut with Red, White & Royal Blue. “Every filmmaker should be so lucky as to have their first movie get a sequel,” López said. “It was such an exciting thing to watch the film go out in the world last summer. It’s exciting to have so much wind at our backs and so much support.”
A release date for the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel has yet to be announced.

Am I reading every interview with Matthew López that drops? YES.
This one? With Observer? It may be my favorite yet.
López dives into his connection to the book, the story, and Alex Claremont Diaz.
He talks about the merit of romantic comedies and how the staples in the genre are built to last. He discusses how he made Red, White & Royal Blue with the intent of it standing the test of time with the rom-com greats.
He brings up how important it was to him to have this film represent gay sex — it was in his OG pitch! Like:
"It was really important to me as well in a mainstream love story. We talked about this as a rom-com and there other times we talked about it as a love story. As a love story, it was really important to me that the audience understand that these two young men are deeply connected—emotionally, intellectually and physically. Their physical connection is a huge part of what binds them. It would have been absolutely the decision I would make if it was a man and a woman. So I was going apply the same storytelling and requirements on my queer film that I think anybody would on a on a heterosexual film."
I seriously want to copy and paste every single quote and write about how much I love them, but I'd much rather you click the link and give it a read yourself. We can always chat here!

Speaking as an old human being, I wanted to say how much the bisexual representation in Red White and Royal Blue has meant to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Growing up in the UK in the 80s/90s, in a small village, under the shadow of Section 28, queer representation felt virtually invisible. Even in universities, LGB societies (as they were then known), were still in fierce debate over the recent inclusion of that last B.
The majority consensus then was that the B was included as a temporary place to rest on the journey of becoming, not as a valid destination.
It took me years to realise that I didn't need to "pick a side", that I wasn't "confused" or "in denial".
So thank you, Casey McQuiston and Matthew Lopez, for creating and caretaking the bisexual identity of a lead character in a romantic fairytale with a happy ending. I honestly never thought I would see such a thing in mainstream media.
