El Generico spent so little time as a heel (about two months out of a ten-year career) that it's a shock to come across a match where he's heeling it up, like this 2006 IWS match against Max Boyer where he adds a dastardly eye rake.

Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux in Madame de... (Max Ophüls, 1953)
Cast: Charles Boyer, Danielle Darrieux, Vittorio De Sica, Jean Debucourt, Jean Galland, Mireille Perrey, Paul Azaïs, Josselin, Hubert Noël, Lia Di Leo. Screenplay: Marcel Achard, Max Ophüls, Annette Wademant. Cinematography: Christian Matras. Production design: Jean d’Aubonne. Film editing: Borys Lewin. Music: Oscar Straus, Georges Van Parys.
Madame de... begins in farce and ends in tragedy. In America, the title became The Earrings of Madame de..., but that puts the emphasis on what is, in effect, merely a MacGuffin. The earrings were given to Countess Louise de... (Danielle Darrieux) by her husband, General André de... (Charles Boyer), on their wedding day. (Their full surname is coyly hidden throughout the film: A sound blots out the latter part of the name when it is spoken, and it is hidden by a flower when it appears on a place card at a banquet. The effect is rather like a newspaper gossip column trying to avoid a libel suit when reporting a scandal among the aristocracy.) The scandal is set in motion when Louise, a flirtatious woman with many admirers, decides to sell the earrings to pay off the debts she wants to hide from André. Their marriage has obviously come to a pause: Though they remain affectionate with each other, they have separate bedrooms and at night they talk to each other through doors that open on a connecting room. Louise takes the earrings to the jeweler (Jean Debucourt) from whom André originally purchased them. But when she tries to persuade André that she lost them at the opera and the "theft" is reported in the newspapers, the jeweler tries to sell them back to the general. To put an end to the business, André pays for them, then presents them to his mistress, Lola (Lia Di Leo), as a parting gift: Their affair over, she is leaving for Constantinople. There, Lola gambles them away, but they are bought by an Italian diplomat, Baron Donati (Vittorio De Sica), who is on his way to a posting in Paris. And of course Donati meets Louise, they fall in love, and he presents the earrings to her as a gift. Recognizing them, she has no recourse but to hide them, but they will resurface with fatal results. How Max Ophüls gradually shades this plot from a situation suited to a Feydeau farce into a poignant conclusion is a part of the film's magic. It depends to a great extent on the superb performances of Darrieux, Boyer, and De Sica, but also on Ophuls's typically restless camera, handled by cinematographer Christian Matras, as it explores Jean d'Eaubonne's elegant fin de siècle sets. Much depends, too, on the film editor, Borys Lewin, who helps Ophüls accomplish one of the movies' great tours de force, following Louise and Donati as they dance what appears to be an extended waltz but gradually shows itself to be several waltzes taking place over the period of time in which they fall in love. It's a cinematic showpiece, but it's fully integrated into what has to be one of the great movies.

My Week(s) in Reviews: June 9, 2024
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (George Miller, 2024)
Tumblr media
Disappointing. It's impossible to not compare this movie to Fury Road. The sad thing is, when you do compare this to Fury Road, every single aspect of it pales in comparison. Anya is really good, here, but just never feels like Furiosa. And Chris Hemsworth is a blast, but he goes full-ham in the most distracting way imaginable. Then there's Miller's direction, which is tedious compared to his work on Fury Road. The structure of the film is awkward, and the pacing is damn-near unbearable, draining the action set-pieces of almost all of the balls-to-the-wall adrenaline in which every single moment of Fury Road was drowning. And the cinematography is a complete bore compared to the eye-melting shots by which Fury Road was almost exclusively composed. All that being said, on its own, Furiosa is not a bad movie. Unfortunately, however, it's impossible to experience it on its own in a world where the infinitely superior Fury Road exists. - 6/10
In the Land of Saints and Sinners (Robert Lorenz, 2024)
Tumblr media
I really like this brand of slow-burn, quietly human, small-town action-thrillers. Add in this stellar cast and that pitch-perfect climax, and this is the best of its kind I've come across in at least the past few years. - 9/10
The Beekeeper (David Ayer, 2024)
Tumblr media
Far from good, but just action-packed enough to keep it from being a complete waste of time. - 4.5/10
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Wes Ball, 2024)
Tumblr media
The absence of Andy Serkis felt significant. But other than that, this wasn't bad. Overlong? Definitely. But far from bad. I don't have much to say, really. The mo-cap work was fantastic, and there were some really interesting/exciting set-pieces. The cast were pretty solid straight through, with the highlights definitely being Freya Allan and Kevin Durand, who steals every second of screen-time he has. - 8/10 For Reference... My Updated Scores for the New Planet of the Apes Films: Rise: 7.5/10 Dawn: 9/10 War: 9.5/10 Kingdom: 8/10
I also revisited Peter Jackson's The Frighteners and Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day & Happy Death Day 2U. The Frighteners is every bit as amazing as it was the last time I watched it, except for how poorly the effects have aged. And the Happy Death Day movies were just as fun as they were in cinemas. I really wish we'd get more of that concept and delivery, and more of Jessica Rothe as a scream queen.
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.

ANOTHER AU!? I know what you're saying... Gwen, you're nuts. But not only are you absolutely right, I think this one might be my most ambitious one yet. As a young nerd, there were two groups. The Marvel fans and the DC fans. And while the rivalry certainly has calmed down a bit, I was almost always torn. So, earlier in the week, I decided to do the one thing that every fanfic writer has tried at least once.
A Marvel/DC crossover.
But unlike the typical realm merger, to put it in Mortal Kombat terms, this is a universe where both properties coexist. For example, picture a group of people walking to a Big Belly Burger while listening to Just the Facts with J. Jonah Jameson. That's just a fraction. I have an ENTIRE starting cast as well.

AfterMash Thoughts
I liked the initial premise of the characters working together at a Veterans’ Hospital. I enjoyed seeing Potter, Klinger, and Father Mulcahy. The comedy did not match M*A*S*H.  While the characters from the original series held my interest, the new characters (especially season 1) did not work out. I would’ve liked more for Soon-Lee. I also feel that by season 2, Father Mulcahy didn’t have much to do. They put Max through too much, which was unnecessary. I preferred the first actress who played Mildred Potter.
What was missing: I think they needed one more character from M*A*S*H, a doctor or nurse to work off of Colonel Potter.  (Hawkeye, BJ, Charles, or Margaret) Alan Alda probably wanted to do other work at that point and Hawkeye was happy in Maine with his father. I don’t know how well BJ could’ve played off the other characters alone.  Charles was in Boston. Margaret could’ve worked.
Favorite characters: Father Mulcahy and Soon-Lee
New characters I like: Bob and Boyer
Ships: Soon-Lee/Klinger

Motornormativity (4/4)
Conclusion: “…and why should I care?”
Tumblr media
Ok, so why is this even a thing?
Anyone active in urban planning or transportation planning / civil engineering will be very familiar with the lively discussions taking place about changing the paradigm re: transportation… that we can’t keep building more roads to solve congestion issues and that our cities need to be more compact, to make them more sustainable by using less energy.
(There are multiple benefits to a less auto-oriented culture, but energy use reductions and sustainability are a big one.)
Cities cannot reasonably expect their residents make the necessary changes unless the alternatives are seen as viable options. This is going to remain a challenge until the infrastructure for these modes is available (like sidewalks and bike lanes) and there will always be trade-offs; transit today is routinely at least going to take 2x or more time to make a trip compared to a car.
There also need to be inviting places to walk, bike, ride transit, and socialize.
Tumblr media
Like other cities similar to it, Brisbane has some of the necessary elements to be less auto-oriented… but is still very much auto-oriented.
Tumblr media
Note that not all cities are stuck in this situation. Over the last fifty years, Copenhagen has made a shift towards active transportation, and Curitiba is an example of a city that changed to make heavy use of bus rapid transit. But in Copenhagen’s case, this has meant taxes and fees to dissuade people from driving. And Curitiba is maxing out its BRT capacity.
As long as people still believe that they have no choice but to drive, people will not change their habits. Providing more transport choices and raising awareness about those modes will be key. “Bluey” has actually made some efforts to do this, perhaps without even intending to do so!
It may be a sweeping statement but people all tend to take for granted what we've grown up with. What happens in “Bluey” episodes will seem familiar to anyone who’s about the same age as “Bluey” and Bingo’s parents. Incorporating ideas into these stories that make alternatives to driving “ok” and “not unusual” helps encourage children and their families to consider such options seriously, particularly given that many people seem open to emulating the Heeler’s parenting styles / “taking advice from a dog” 😉
Feel free to send me your thoughts on this. -Dave

Citi open today:
I took pics with Ben Shelton, hailey baptiste, Luca van asche, mattea belluci, Evan king
We saw Arina rodionova, max Purcell, Paul jubb and clervie ngounoue(I think) walking around but i didn’t say anything cause I wasn’t sure if it was them or it was inconvenient
We saw Emil ruusovori, reily opelka, Ben shelton, matos/melo, Emma raducanu, sebastian korda, |chris O’Connell, and another Player I couldn’t identify who was wearing a lotto kit |(<- together) practicing on court
The matches we watched were the last set of bjorkland v rhakimova, the last couple games of polmans v kwiatkowski, the first set of belluci v boyer (and then we went back to get a picture at the end) and king/kurkov v mcdonald/harris
We got there kind of late (3:00) so a lot of the big names had already left the practice courts and most of the matches had already happened (and all the concession stands had closed too aka no cold drinks😫)
When we got the the lady at the ticket office told us there was only one match left so it wasn’t worth buying the ticket now(which wasn’t really true) but it ended up being so worth it cause it was actually really fun and my mom ended up taking so much sample sunscreen so that was worth it to her lmao

Taking of Pelham 123 - trailer
There's some confusion you can see Billy O'hare which looks like John Travolta you also see Tony Soprano was actually Tommy F. We're very confused and I think David Boyer is John Travolta and we know he is and he's a mac proper and it's craziness and he's taking hostages trades the hostages for this guy who we think is trump in disguise and it is about Pelham investments but it used to be a grant company for students to learn and that's how it started it was a Pell Grant and it was short for Pelham and it was for students who are doing exceedingly well and they kept our son from that money started giving it to Brian who's an idiot and they hate him for it I said You are a stupid sack of **** and it went out of you like a sieve and we have some sort of barbarian carpenter beer drinker. And he's hanging out with Hulk Hogan with the beer in his hand shrugging saying I don't get it hulk Hogan and that's what they're saying he turned out to be a little bit rough so he looks up at Hulk Hogan and says I don't want this ****. And BJA is astonished but was very rude to our son put him down a lot and said he wasn't very smart so one day I signed asked for help in math and Brian couldn't do it and wouldn't do it and he started to ask him questions and Brian turned out to be stupid and he wondered who he was and said This guy is not smart in any way after a time it started to figure other stuff out. And the max hate that too they know it's not our son's fault and it started educating him because he's a rebel and stuff and they said you're a big huge fools and you're not even good rebels you suck at it and it's true and they didn't plan for him to learn tons of stuff more or less kind of did but a lot of them think that it's stupid and some of it's stupid and they do say it even the ones who had it happen say it's a little over the top but if you get down to it they don't want him to know all that stuff. And the Pelham Grant they looked at as money that he could have used to go to formal school and learn arithmetic mathematics engineering instead of going to China and it was not that money that he used and he had investments in Pelham investment firm and there's another name but it includes the word Pelham and our son was confused now he was curious he said boy this is ringing a bell and 9/11 was a big eye opener for our son and it took ages for him to figure stuff out but without that he never would and that was over the top at the end of it they say but really john Travolta's mad because he saw them and they weren't talking about much and they're blaming him for all sorts of stuff. And he says she knew a lot that she has to sit there and listen but I hardly knew anything. I didn't know Mr Paris was at first and couldn't detect much of a change I had no idea it was my own grandpa and he says that was his finding and these idiots are making it look like he knew everything and it's not true he ran around with his mind closed for awhile 'cause he's just trying to get through school and it's very difficult on the outside. And he was saying that to us too after school he started to work a little and at work they were working him to the bone tirelessly then they came up with stupid **** for him to do it got really mad at these people they said you have all this construction you're building giant buildings and you want me to be this proper running around from job to job losing everything I have dragging me through the mud finally living in a camper and he said screw you and it was a good thing. Never found out to be 75% of the population of Earth far too big and the Max lost it they lost control of this thing they're down there thinking they're going to leave then they made some discoveries and the clan escaped and something's up there in Saturn they have huge problems and these idiots don't have control over anything granted they planned it so how can they say it's out of control let's just say it comes off and is acting in his demeanor like he shouldn't have to do what he's doing and it's kind of a chore that's not the act it's really bizarre when it's life and death in the end of the movie he fails in his shot here's a real jerk to the two of our people here but he said in the movie too they're sitting in this lustful loveful relationship and everybody starts screwing around with it and you're screwing around with me like I'm your property too and I'm nobody's property and you're nuts and he's right these people are insane they think that they can go around and push people around shove them around stay what they want at any point in time not even if they have power and they're gonna learn this wrong. They've been too big for too long true too they're big for thousands of years they were about 40% of the population and they run around doing tricks and saying dumb things dumping on people and they're hateful mean people and he recognizes that's and he recognizes that's a fact and also says how he's supposed to know if it's too long if they're this dumb and influence people like they are. And these people had to have them covered it was a nightmare. So you don't know what you see until you open your eyes and John Travolta was glad to hear it and he heard this from him he said I'm just looking over and there's someone there and I said well people live there and these people went nuts about it from what I recall they kept mention.... from what I recall they kept mentioning you and trying to get me jealous trying to see you doing stuff and you had a girlfriend you had several girlfriends. Knew it too and he was real popular and also he said this I can't stand .... and also he said this I can't stand these people at all and I don't want to hear about it he said that's how they were getting away with it and I still think they are. And there are rude bunch of cannibals and that got him going. So we have this problem with them that they're insistent on screwing a that they're insistent on screwing around with their son and if there is nothing. So the giant takes these hostages and he trades them in for Denzel Washington who is actually trump and he's in his own body it's coming up pretty quick and it has to do with the battles one of them we described. In Pennsylvania. It does have a strange name and this is when the money moves to New York City so you can pinpoint when this battle is. And it goes there it goes to the governor know the mayor as a slush fund and he demands that particular money from Tony Soprano and they're threatening other stuff and he hasn't brought down he's forced to and the others are saying to bring it down'cause they wanna see where he brings it and it's kind of stupid they sorta have an idea and he says this you actually know what I'm bringing it and you're kind of having me do it so he got curious and they said they wanna use it as bait and that is going to start and take place very soon.

Bette Davis and Paul Lukas in Watch on the Rhine (Herman Shumlin, 1943)
Cast: Bette Davis, Paul Lukas, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Lucile Watson, Beulah Bondi, George Coulouris, Donald Woods, Henry Daniell. Screenplay: Dashiell Hammett, based on a play by Lillian Hellman. Cinematography: Merritt B. Gerstad, Hal Mohr. Art direction: Carl Jules Weyl. Film editing: Rudi Fehr. Music: Max Steiner.
Paul Lukas has the dubious distinction of being one of those Oscar anomalies, a longtime supporting player who suddenly gets thrust into a leading role that wins him the award for best actor. His competition included Gary Cooper in For Whom the Bell Tolls (Sam Wood), Walter Pidgeon in Madame Curie (Mervyn LeRoy), and Mickey Rooney in The Human Comedy (Clarence Brown). Oh, and Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (Michael Curtiz), the one performance that everyone remembers. Lukas had plenty of opportunities to attract attention before: He had begun acting in movies in his native Hungary in 1915, and after coming to Hollywood had appeared in numerous films, playing Professor Bhaer opposite Katharine Hepburn in Little Women (George Cukor, 1933) and the sinister Dr. Hartz in The Lady Vanishes (Alfred Hitchcock, 1938), for example. He had played the role of Kurt Muller, the coordinator of resistance movements against the Nazis, in the original Broadway production of Watch on the Rhine in 1941, so he was a natural choice for the film version, though he landed the role only after the actor producer Hal Wallis wanted, Charles Boyer, was unavailable. As often happens, the Oscar was no step toward better roles in movies, and Lukas spent much of his later career on stage, though he continued to appear on film and TV up till his death in 1971. The play was written by Lillian Hellman, whose lover, Dashiell Hammett, did the screenplay with some input from her. Unfortunately, the result is less a movie than a sermon about doing one's patriotic duty in the struggle against fascism. It didn't help that Wallis hired the play's director, Herman Shumlin, for the film: Shumlin had never directed a movie and had to be assisted throughout by cinematographer Hal Mohr. He was also unable to rein in Bette Davis, who is miscast as the noble and dutiful wife and has a tendency to slip into some of her familiar and caricaturable mannerisms in the film.
