Fic Finder

1. For a ficfinder: I lost an NSFW oneshot and cannot find it no matter what I search.
So it was set during Cloud Recesses era and Wangxian had gotten together at some point before the fic, and the fic itself is about wx being caught having sex in the library by SMS, except he's being a gross voyeur and getting off on that without wx's permission.
They catch him in the act and when sms tries to say that they'll end up punished when he says what happened, LWJ went and said something like "Even if I'm punished, you'll be punished worse cuz I'm clan and you're just an outer desciple."
And that's about all I remember 😅 Thanks in advance!

2. For fic finder: I am looking for a canon-era fic where WWX is a mermaid-type creature. He is injured and taken to Cloud Recesses to heal and everyone there is very respectful of him (he is a godly creature, maybe?). However he is kidnapped and he is tortured so that he will cry pearls. I can’t remember if this is the whole fic or if that kidnapping scene is just one chapter in a larger story. Sound familiar to anyone? Thank you!

3. Hello, I am looking for a fic in AO3 that I have read this past few months but I'm having a hard time finding it again. It was about before Jin Ling's One Month Celebration, where Wei Wuxian died and the Wen Remnants were devastated and don't know how to explain this to the rest. During this, from what I remember reading this Jiang Yanli and the others are planning on reconciling with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wanji asked his brother for encouragement in confessing to Wei Wuxian and permission in marrying him - also asking Lan Xichen for a forehead ribbon. But they don't know it is already too late since Wei Wuxian is already dead. I will appreciate the help in finding this Fic. Thank you. @mythiquefonceephenix

4. Hello!
I’m looking for a modern au fic where Wei Ying comes back as Mo Xuanyu and is married to Lan Zhan. I think Lan Zhan had married Mo Xuanyu to help him get away from his family but they didn’t actually have a relationship so Wei Ying comes in and tries to pretend that he knows what’s going on and pretends to be Mo Xuanyu but Lan Zhan immediately knows something is up. I think I remember a scene where Lan Xichen was against the marriage but sees how happy Wei Ying is making Lan Zhan and is okay with it? I think Lan Zhan might have been a professor in it and Wei Ying started taking classes at the university or maybe he started some other kind of hobby thing, I just remember him trying to find ways to fill his time. This has been bothering me that I can’t find it, I’ve been searching all the tags and my own bookmarks, any help is appreciated! @sepaea

5. Hey, I need some help with finding a fic, if possible. All I remember is that Wei YIng time travels back in time and find himself at the Discussion Conference. Before he can do anything, he ascends as a god and can't leave heaven. However, after receiving the prays of friends and family, he escapes heaven and lands back on earth before jumping into Lan Zhan's arms. I also think it was a one-shot. Thank you!

6. I really need help finding a fic I read on AO3 years ago, so I'll try listing the important things i remember! Basically, Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze survive, but Cangse gets very injured in her legs after the attack and is unable to walk after that. Wei Ying is haunted by some ghost, and later on it's revealed that to be the future Wei Wuxian. Meng Yao's mother lives, and she becomes a teacher in the Jiang Sect. XY and XXC are both Baoshan Sanren's disciples and they leave the mountain. @subaro

7. Hey I'm looking for a fic where wei wuxian gets badly injured I think when wen ning is brought back and like he's paralysed and then eventually dies. So song lan takes a letter to Jin lings one month celebration and everyone realizes how bad they messed up. I remember that a-yuan was crying a lot and calling Lan Wangji father? Anyway wei wuxian dies and the cultivation world over the next 13 years collects pieces of his soul to put it back together and summon him? Thank you for the help @mybestfriendisacinnamonroll

8. can you help me find a fic? i remember only a specific part; it was a conversation between what i think was a maybe rogue, disciple era wwx and possibly lqr about demons, and how the correct response wasn't to kill them on sight because some people turned into demons when they didn't want to, so it was best to get a feel for the situation before making a judgement, and how wwx was both surprised and also comforted by that response

9. For a FicFinder: there's a modern AU where WWX gets a text from Wen Qing while he's at dinner with the Jiang family. She's having a family emergency; WWX and his friends and siblings all go across the country to help her re-build her family house. It's short and soft and ends with them building a dock over the local lake. It's NOT the one where WWX is trans and thinks LWJ is dating JYL. There was this specific scene where JC found a way to walk/run on water, same with JL, and JC managed to find a way to allow Fairy to join as well. I know wangxian was in it but I don't remember any pairings or other scenes. Hope you guys are well! ^^ @fng095

12. Hello, I am new here! But I have been trying to find this one fic, that I read a while back and am not sure if it was deleted or not. I think it was a time travel fix-it of sorts. All I remember is that WangXian got together either before or during the war with the Wens and after a battle or on their way to a battle, they are passive through a burnt down village where WWX senses or hears the call of a Fierce Corpse and calls to it. It is severely burnt, like chard black, burnt and it is carrying a bundle. It turns out to be LSZ as a baby. WWX realized that the corpse, a'Yuan's birth mother, was so worried for him that even after her horrific death her Fierce Corpse protected her son.
WWX promises her that he and LWJ would raise him and keep him safe, allowing her to pass on. As they leave WWX says that LSZ feels like he is theirs, and LWJ agrees that he is now theirs. I think it was a WIP or that it got completed not long after I read it originally, but for the life of me, I cannot recall the name or anything outside of this scene. I think it wasn't very nice to JWY/JC, but I could be very wrong about this...
Please help me? Thank you! I also wouldn't mind some nice time travel fix-it fics or even just WangXian getting their sht together much sooner recommendations if you find them. @rhygserene

So some years ago I've read a fic that made me experience some bad shit, so I promptly forgot about it, but now my friends are asking to drop the link and I can't find it anymore :( It was post-canon, WWX dies, so LWJ goes mad and massacres almost everyone in CR, then goes to Jingshi and stays there hugging the body (also kills his uncle when he comes there) There's time travel involved, and LWJ helps his past self, teaches him all he knows about WY, after that sorta dies? LWJ is slightly estranged from his fam because he's really into reconstructing the song of clarity (long lost) through a research study with a bunch of students who can't cultivate too well. Thinking About JCS Too Much, Vol. 1: "Jaded Mandarin" - Lost in Translation?
Intro
In my second attempt at an introduction for this blog, I pondered aloud, "Ever wonder if you’re too big a fan of your favorite piece of entertainment?" Suffice it to say, that is far from the only time that thought has crossed my mind.
You see, unlike many faded celebrities attempting to jump-start their careers afresh by "finding religion," I followed the opposite path. I don’t remember hearing about God, Jesus, or anything like that before a certain age. I was about 4 when I first started becoming aware of religion. Something related to Christendom spawned a cover story in Time magazine, and they had this beautiful traditional artwork of Jesus on the front that caught my eye. I became obsessed with religion in general, and the Christ story in particular. (Even today a lot of my extracurricular reading is devoted to religious fiction and non-fictional religious studies, and the shelves of my film collection are strewn with biblical epics, both Old Testament and New. I’m by no means invested in the Abrahamic faiths -- in fact, I'm now an avowed atheist -- but I won’t deny that I’m very knowledgeable about them.)
This obsession led me to Jesus Christ Superstar, and so my life as a show biz professional, and my switch from a special interest (yay, spectrum!) in religion and the surrounding scholarship to one in a single telling of a story that happens to deal with religious subject matter, began.
Naturally, this has led to a few embarrassing incidents of over-thinking where I nerd out just a little too much, primarily from a literary perspective. (Case in point: my answer to a recent question posed to this blog about the lack of a detail from the biblical story in the show. Did I need to go "all in" on whether or not Jesus was actually prophesying that Peter would deny him three times by the time a rooster crowed? Probably not. Did I anyway? Oh, c'mon, you've read it by now, don't make me relive it.)
So, in a similar vein, I'm going to periodically write about those moments where I nerd out too much, in hopes that my immense nerdiness will maybe give someone a deeper understanding of the show, even just a small part of it. You've seen one, thanks to an inquiry from an anonymous fellow fan; after the jump, here's another.
Translation vs. Adaptation
Among the many unique features of JCS, it was one of the first musicals of its kind to be widely adapted into the local vernacular when presented internationally, rather than merely importing an English-language cast as the custom used to be.
Besides its mother tongue, JCS can (theoretically) be heard in:
Czech
French
German (anecdotally, it has been reported that the German translation is not the best, which is why many productions in German-speaking countries opt for the English instead; however, that might be about to change, as the production at the Luisenburg Festspiele Wunsiedel this summer is supposed to mark the debut of a new authorized one -- we'll see how it goes!)
Hungarian (there's two Hungarian ones, actually)
Japanese
Polish
Portuguese
Romanian (in a translation recently debuted in, of all places, Chicago)
Russian (there are several, both official and unofficial; we will deal with all of them today)
Spanish (both the European variety and two Mexican ones)
Swedish (at least two that I'm aware of, the original and whatever Ola Salo uses for productions involving him)
(And those are just the ones I know about.)
While I appreciate JCS most in its original language, being a native English speaker myself, I realize translation and adaptation are important, for all the reasons that they usually are: not everybody speaks a foreign language with dexterity, or is capable of processing it at the pace a play or musical is performed; almost without exception, people respond better to the language they grew up speaking, especially in a piece of entertainment; and, most importantly, translation allows ideas and information to spread across cultures, sometimes changing history in the process. (After all, no matter what your religious belief, part of the reason the Bible -- the show's source material, as if you needed a reminder -- has had such an impact on history is the sheer number of translations, which, at last count, is 531 languages.)
However, translation into any language (pro or amateur) is a delicate art, especially where a play or musical is concerned. As Don Bartlett, who has translated Danish, German, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish books into English, put it in a piece where several translators were interviewed for The Guardian, “There’s always a tension between being true to the original and being readable.” On the one hand, translating the meanings of words and phrases in a literal way maintains fidelity to the text; on the other, translating sense-for-sense, taking into account the meanings of phrases or whole sentences, can improve readability. And that’s just books… imagine doing this for theater or film!
Personally, I subscribe to the assessment of Edith Grossman (also interviewed in the aforementioned Guardian piece), who once said: “…the most fundamental description of what translators do is that we write — or perhaps rewrite — in language B a work of literature originally composed in language A, hoping that readers of the second language — I mean, of course, readers of the translation — will perceive the text, emotionally and artistically, in a manner that parallels and corresponds to the aesthetic experience of its first readers. This is the translator’s grand ambition. Good translations approach that purpose. Bad translations never leave the starting line.”
(Or, to tie this back into our topic somewhat more closely, I'm mashing together two quotes from two different interviews with the late Herbert Kretzmer, the adaptor of such popular foreign musicals as Les Misérables, Marguerite, and Kristina: "Words have resonance within a culture, they have submarine strengths and meaning. If I wanted a literal translation, I would go to the dictionary. Translation — the very word I rebut and resent, because it minimizes the genuine creativity that I bring to the task. [...] I offer this advice to any lyricist invited to adapt or translate foreign songs into English: Do not follow the original text slavishly. Re-invent the lyric in your own words, remembering that there may be better ways of serving a master than trotting behind him on a leash.")
Nowhere is this job harder than JCS, especially in Russian. As languages, Russian and English are just too different from each other, each very rich in emotional shadings that the other language lacks (or at least conveys differently), to a point that nearly every new production of JCS over there has led to a fresh translation. Tim Rice's unusual wordplay, masterful (at times) in English, is very difficult to convey in a foreign tongue, especially when it can be safely argued that the expression in question is hardly common to its native audience.
The Piece We're Evaluating
As if the title didn't give it away, I speak, of course, of a certain insult Judas hurls at Jesus during their climactic argument at the Last Supper, calling him:
A jaded mandarin A jaded mandarin As a jaded jaded faded jaded jaded mandarin
That's a doozy in English, to say the least. I may have written on this blog previously that I’ve heard enough jokes about the Last Supper being at an all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant or Jesus’ penchant for citrus fruits to be tired of them all.
In case you missed Tim's actual meaning: mandarin is not just a variety of orange, a form of the Chinese language, or a term for an official in any of the nine top grades of the former imperial Chinese civil service (or clothing characteristic of what they’d allegedly wear or porcelain objets d’art depicting them). The root word for mandarin in Hindi means “counselor,” and – unfortunately, given this definition’s origin in unkind Asian racial stereotypes – the term came to refer (in colonialist British parlance) to a powerful official or senior bureaucrat, especially one perceived as reactionary and secretive. When he calls Jesus a “jaded mandarin,” Judas is saying that Jesus is corrupt, washed up, and useless as a leader.
Could Tim Rice have found a better way to say that? Probably. But this is the method he chose, and for better or worse, it has gone down in history ever since, including a recent parodic reference in the second season of the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! to a “sour macaroon.”
Now, it took all that explanation to convey its meaning in English. How well do you think it crossed over to Russian? Well, no less than 16 translators decided to try; some were official, others fan translations that were used in little-known productions. (The number should not be surprising. This is very much the viewpoint of an outsider looking in who lived long after that time, but when an album is banned by the government, bootleg copies change hands for huge sums "underground," and the music on that album is in a style also banned by the government… well, let's just say something "forbidden" is going to attract a lot of people. After that initial burst of enthusiasm, then it's like any other piece of literature which is translated a number of times by multiple people -- someone who thinks they can do a better job of conveying the foreign meaning in their native tongue, perhaps in a more modern dialect or a more relevant way.)
Inspired by a conversation I had on ye olde JCS Zone Forum (RIP) with Russian fan Pasha Levcovetz, we're going to take a look at all of them, evaluating them for literal vs. poetic accuracy and also offering opinions on which might have even -- dare I say it -- improved on the original. For the sake of most of my readership, I'll render the Russian in (literal but accurate) English so you can understand what the adapted lyrics intend to say. (Special thanks to Pasha for his help!)
Translating "Mandarin"
As one might expect with a phrase that is not exactly common linguistic currency, and the number of jokes made about Tim's choice of words, the first problem Russian translators might encounter is "mandarin" -- more specifically, whether or not it is a literal reference to mandarin fruit.
Much to both my dismay and my amusement, two of the official translators and three of the fans decided that the lyric indeed referred to the fruit.
In the Teatr Mossoveta production in Moscow, which has been presented numerous times from 1990 to the present (and which made much larger departures that I've previously written about in response to a question from @nemoverne), Yaroslav Kesler rendered it like so:
Like a pitiful tangerine Like a pitiful tangerine Like a pitiful, pitiful, pitiful, pitiful, yellow tangerine!
For the more faithful version recorded on CD in 1992, Vyacheslav Ptitsyn traveled in a similar direction:
Squeezed lemon! You are a squeezed lemon! You are a pathetic, petty, pathetic, petty squeezed lemon!
Lastly, for something that is not a variation on either of the above, fan translator Yevgeniy Susorov gives us:
You are a withered fruit You are rotten, tasteless fruit You are a withered fig tree that will die in the flames!
I can see their intention, and, in my opinion, both Ptitsyn and Susorov improved on the original line, although this was probably coincidental in the former's case.
As far as Kesler is concerned, it's more of a vague fruit comparison that sort of makes sense. A yellow tangerine is overripe, and as tasty as overly ripened fruit can be, it's prone to developing patches of mold, and goes bad when left uneaten for too long. The meaning here when Judas applies it to Jesus as an insult should be clear, as he's been saying something like this about him -- metaphorically speaking -- for the entire show. (In the fan category, Vadim Zhmud makes the same choice and is even more explicit about his intentions, rendering the fruit as a "lethargic," "well-fed" tangerine. Mikhail Kokovikhin's take also chooses "tangerine," but gets caught up in trying to use it in exactly the way Tim uses "mandarin," repeating the word for emphasis and relying on the fact that Russian has three different synonyms for the word "rotten" to pad out the stanza. There's nothing wrong with trying to match Tim's choices as closely as possible, but just calling someone a rotten fruit in all the ways one can is a little weak.)
Ptitsyn's is more intriguing, partially because of a (likely) unintentional double meaning. If you recall, he refers to a pathetic lemon that has had all the juice squeezed out of it. In American English, in addition to referring to the fruit of the same name, "lemon" is also used to refer to a product, usually an automobile, that has flaws -- like manufacturing defects, in the car's case -- too great or severe to serve its intended purpose. (To cite a more abstract usage, the late Jim Steinman aptly used the "lemon" analogy in the Meat Loaf song "Life Is a Lemon And I Want My Money Back.") In Russian, the phrase "squeezed lemon" similarly refers to someone very tired, a person who has lost their strength or abilities. Poetically speaking, Judas calling Jesus a "lemon" at this moment has an extra layer of meaning that works really well in either language.
Lastly, my favorite (if only as an atheist theologian) is Susorov, who doesn't just spin the line into a much better fruit metaphor -- he even gets biblical with it, referencing both Jesus' teaching about "trees bearing bad fruit" and also one bad tree in particular that figured into Jesus' final week in the original Passion narrative.
Quoting loosely from the King James Version of Matthew's Gospel (an incident also recounted in Mark, chapter 11): "And seeing a fig tree by the wayside [Jesus] went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, 'May no fruit ever come from you again!' And the fig tree withered."
In Susorov's text, Judas is not only condemning Jesus as the tree bearing bad fruit against which he preached, but also comparing him to a specific, very recent failure that might still sting.
(Susorov's choice is made even more ironic by the fact that Lloyd Webber and Rice intended to musicalize this moment in JCS themselves, but ultimately decided to cut it from the original album when concerns of length were raised, as previously discussed here. If that scene was still in the show, this would be quite the burn!)
Getting at the Meaning
Moving away from the poetic toward conveying the lyric's literal intention without getting bogged down in language, both official and fan translators seem to settle for general insults, so it becomes a different question: whether they are just that (i.e., general insults) or they convey the same meaning as intended by "jaded mandarin."
The latter is achieved adequately by Viktor Polyak (Yaroslavskiy Gosudarstvennyy Teatr Yunogo Zritelya, 1989-1994):
You are a crashed idol You are a crashed idol You are a crashed, broken, dirty idol!
It works. The show is called Jesus Christ Superstar; a fallen celebrity metaphor is far from out of place. Maksim Samoylov, in the fan department, goes for a similar take, having Judas call Jesus a "little, fallen star."
Svetlana Peyn, whose translation has appeared at Stas Namin in Moscow from 2011 to the present, is on a similar wavelength:
You are a pompous hero You are a pompous hero With poisonous loud glory you are a self-important pompous hero
Ouch!
Mikhail Parygin, a fan translator, is in the same boat, going for "a [...] pathetic, petty, pompous king." Likewise Andrey Voskresenskiy, with "a [...] surrendered, fallen, finished prophet," and Vera Degtyaryova, who settles for "a miserable [...] former leader." Also rather close is Aleksandr Butuzov, who has Judas call Jesus "a loser" and "a mediocre, brainless, stupid leader." Though Russian fans I've spoken to don't especially care for his choice of words in their own language, it's on the mark as far as literal meaning goes.
Another official translation is not quite in the same realm, but close enough to make sense. Specifically, Grigoriy Kruzhkov and Marina Boroditskaya, holding the pen for the St. Petersburg Rock Opera State Theater in an adaptation which has been produced since 1990, provided:
Like a rebel! Like a simple rebel! Like a deceiver and a thief! Like a self-proclaimed king!
Metaphorically speaking, if you squint at it, it looks similar; full-bore insults that at least fit the plot.
Things get a little more interesting when translators move farther afield. For example, on the official front, Valeriy Lagosha's version for the "Free Space" Theater in Oryol, which ran from 2003-07, is:
No, I do not want this, prophet I do not want this, prophet After all, in this life I was able to do much more
It's an interesting idea to follow Judas' suggestion in "Heaven On Their Minds" that everyone would be better off if Jesus had not become famous and reinforce that point.
On the fan front, Kirill Sukhomlinov chooses to turn Jesus' biblical language about the religious authorities back on him:
You are a pathetic hypocrite You are a pathetic hypocrite You are a pathetic, pathetic, pathetic, pathetic, nasty hypocrite!
And Maksim Zakharov doesn't really hit on the exact idea, but manages to create something that at least fits the character and situation:
You are a dark person You are a terrible person I am glad that you will end your life in prison!
Conclusion
Will there ever be a perfect translation? The jury's still out, especially -- it would seem -- in Russian. (There are more examples just from Russian translations to talk about that I will contemplate in future posts.) But it's always fascinating to view a piece from someone else's perspective, isn't it?

it's weird tho right
cos i don't see the wen siblings the same way i do the jiang siblings despite them having relatively parallel relationships to wei ying
where jiang yanli always felt like she was an infallible presence via wei ying's perspective, wen qing actually felt like a big sibling. both of them took care of him & towards both of them he felt indebted & both of them made sacrifices for him that utterly shattered his heart but ? idk maybe it was the shotgun-speed, the near-whiplash feeling that he spent with the wens that does it for me
that as a man in his late teens early 20s he was less prone to putting the wens on a pedestal and idolizing them, that their extended family treated him like shit while the inner family treated him like, well, family, & ig u can say the opposite is true for the jiangs. that all the outer disciples & yunmeng jiang as a whole treated him like a little rascal to be endeared & loved, & yanli & fengmian would be the exception but ziyuan & cheng were two people in his innermost circle that he had in his most formidable & vulnerable years that just
idk resented is the wrong word for it. like jiang cheng was a product of his environment in Too Many Ways & that just came back to be something to metaphorically stab wei ying with. the envy, the resentment, but the idea that he'd been focusing and meditating and was protected from a Very Early Age that half of the reason Wei Ying was liable to being the founder of demonic cultivation despite having a more positive outlook on life and less outward-facing animosity was cos he Didn't grow up with that level of protection.
meanwhile wen ning was the opposite of cheng in that he went way too far out of his way to use honorifics and shamelessly help wei ying for One selfless act, & while it drove wei ying to some amount of annoyance, the difference in attitude between the two is so night & day. like you can make the argument that wen qing is closer to jiang cheng in terms of dynamics towards wei ying but like her brother, there's nothing left for her to lose. not pride, not social standing, not political relations, & jiang cheng was Too Prideful & would have benefited from keeping Wei Ying close but decided to put him at an arms length cos he couldn't stand being compared to his martial brother. man jgy was Right LMAO jc is stupid for that by a Lot
having wei ying be the main character makes it so that wen ning's idolizing of him is just a cute socially awkward quirk, like he doesn't even call him xiong he calls him gongzi, while wei ying's idolization of jiang yanli is so filtered through a need to do right by her, yanno? there's a psychological barrier that he has against the jiang family, of Wanting to belong but Knowing that his status and relationship with them will forever keep them at an arm's length while the wen family are socially in a similar situation and there's nothing to gain or lose by associating with each other. titles and bloodlines and origins aren't barriers to divide one man from people that he would call home, they just exist to survive one storm after another together

Okay, genuine question-
Why do people hate so much on Jiang Cheng?
Now before y'all get the pitchforks - I'm not a stan! I'm neutral to the guy.
Coz yeah, Jiang Cheng did some fucked up shit, treated Wei Ying like garbage in many cases, and is quick to throw blame around, and was willing to sacrifice the Wen remnants despite them being either innocent or having even helped them. For that Jiang Cheng deserves to get his shit rocked, abso-frigging-lutely. He's not a poor little meow meow.
But at the same time - as a character he's the perfect example of someone's pride absolutely ruining them. He's a prideful bitch, no less coz of how Madam Yu raised him, I assume. His whole characterization runs off the fact that he's too proud to admit his wrongs, and is too focused on keeping up an image, than doing the right thing. Unfortunately I know people personally like that, and the one thing they need is a wake up call and a punt to their ego.
And Wen Ning did quite a lot of damage to it with the Golden Core reveal. (Side note - so proud of Wen Ning, you go buddy, I've got your flower.) Wen Ning absolutely raked Jiang Cheng's pride against the coals. And it was so bad Jiang Cheng went into seclusion - which to me gives hope that during that time he will realize what he has done and will actually own up to his shit behavior when he comes back eventually.
So again - I'm neutral. Among the Jin Guangyao's, Jin Guangshan's and Xue Yang's in the story, Jiang Cheng isn't this evil monster. He's an asshole, granted, but an asshole who still has a chance to fix whatever he can. Nobody in MDZS is entirely innocent - the difference is how they handle it. Some apologized and attoned for their mistakes, some are fumbling about failing to see their mistakes, aaaand well some are criminal masterminds who had to pay the price. Humans are flawed, and it's nice to see all these flaws of different severities be handled and explored.
I will point out, I did only watch the Donghua and read the Manhua, so perhaps I don't have the full picture. Do feel free to maybe shed some light on things, and hey, I'm always open to see other perspectives! I'm just genuinely confused why people so agressively get mad and rip into people for liking JC (which, please don't do that, it's none of your business how someone enjoys a media, we have seen worse on this webbed site-).

[Song lyrics, past relationship, angst]
ChengXian | Mo Dao Zu Shi Modern AU 22-10-2021
[past relationship #chengxian, angst 🔪]
So I listen to colors by hasley on my way back from work and I couldn't stop thinking "Oh, this could be good for some angsty pas-relationship chengxian 👁️👄👁️"
"You were red and you liked me 'cause I was blue But you touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky And you decided purple just wasn't for you"
like come on don't tell me this couldn't work if we play a bit with colour.
and lwj is blue now //
"You're dripping like a saturated sunrise You're spilling like an overflowing sink You're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece And now you're tearing through the pages and the ink"
describing how wwx is from jc perspective I think it works well//
(Yes am sure am mixing up "who" the paragraphs are supposed to describe, but let me have fun okay!)
"Everything is blue His pills, his hands, his jeans And now I'm covered in the colors Pulled apart at the seams And it's blue And it's blue"
I'd make this about jc, probably all think blue that could relate. Maybe teenager jc even//
"Everything is grey His hair, his smoke, his dreams And now he's so devoid of color He don't know what it means And he's blue And he's blue"
now, this could be jc when they are a bit older, maybe in college forcing himself into a path he does not want.//
"You were a vision in the morning When the light came through I know I've only felt religion when I've lied with you You said you'll never be forgiven 'til your boys are too And I'm still waking every morning but it's not with you"
jc thinking back to when they were younger and maybe still living together in the same room. Then future arrives and wwx is no longer by his side.//
"Your little brother never tells you but he loves you so You said your mother only smiled on her TV show You're only happy when your sorry head is filled with dope I hope you make it to the day you're 28 years old"
I also like this one, although I feel like I'd tweak it a bit for it to work.
"[] never tells you but he loves you so" maybe jyl, as loving as she can act, she doesn't necessarily make it clear and in times of doubt jc needs this clarity.
"you said your mother only smiled on her tv show"
I'd make this about jfm honestly, how he only act like a father when he's in front of other people but is otherwise not like that. Maybe a tired yzy who doesn't smile as much anymore unless its to keep the image.
"you're only happy when your sorry head is filled with dope"
I was gonna change the ending, ut you know what? stressed out jc who need an outlet and hangs out with nhs would probably try it and keep doing it if it makes him feel better
"I hope you make it to the day you're 28 years old"
jc talking to himself. jc not believe he'll actually survive 'til he's 28 because unresolved mental health issues are fun 👍 (/s)
I basically changed the whole start of the song great jbdsuhvbsd//
but just imagine, jc and wwx growing up together and jc ends up falling for him, turning purple (and maybe where everything spirals down too). but with these changes, its makes wwx slowly turn around to find someone else whose blue
please don't analyse what my sleep-deprived brain comes up with, I just thought it could be an interesting idea if we take the colour thing literally.
(but if we work with the music video then maybe I can turn this into some ruocheng or rencheng!! I don't know much about what the fuck the song is supposed to be about and am going very surface level right now, let me imagine sad jc for once I too can have a turn to the table sometimes )

My ask is about the golden core transfer and what it would mean for jc. So, if it triggers you, don't read it! I feel the need to alert about this! Be safe!
I don't know you, ( and yes! wwx was just a traumatized teenager!), but the golden core transfer gives me so much negative emotions. Fandom focuses on wwx's pain (and it's interesting! ) but jc's situation is dismissed with "you have to be grateful about it. What a disprectful brat he is" and I am like, dude, you okay? (maybe their opinions are influenced by what wn says, without understanding that what he says isn't the truth, but only what he knows would hurt jc, because he *wants to make jc suffer*). I tried to think about what *I* would feel and I triggered myself, lol. I would get insane if I knew that someone put my brother's golden core in me (transferring organs is okay, but in this? I don't know that it's from my brother! Also when people say that jc agrees to the surgeon, I don't know if they understand the concept of "informed consent") . It's disturbing. I can't even imagine how jc feels about it! How can you live in a body which is modified in this way? Do you feel shame? (this is something a lot of victims feel). And I am not even talking about what this would do with jc insecurities! No one ever appreciated his efforts! Maybe in the moment doesn't , but wn's "you would never compere to him!" would destroy jc! And that's terrible and unfair. And more unfair it's how fandom treats this argument! My loved ones manipulated me for my sake : this doesn't make anything better! I can't imagine jc's feeling. This ask is messy, but my emotions are messy about this. The only thing that I know is that disturbed me the way fandom treats all of this. I don't want to be too harsh but I would see wwx and wq as monsters more then heros for this. And I am not even thinking about how can you trust again someone who did this to you! People can't forgive cheating in a relationship, lol. Oh, and the "jc and wwx's relationship is destroyed by jc's jealousy" : I am like: you okay, dude?? But maybe I am the weird one. Sorry if I seem rude! But this argument just triggers me
Thank you for the warning. 🥰
(Under a cut for both length and content. Reminder that I'm a CQL-only fan.)
Fandom focuses on wwx's pain (and it's interesting! ) but jc's situation is dismissed with "you have to be grateful about it. What a disprectful brat he is" and I am like, dude, you okay?
From what you're saying, I think I'm hearing that while the whole golden core scenario itself is upsetting for you, what's worse is really more about how fandom tends to talk about it. If I'm interpreting that correctly, then...yeah, honestly, I agree. 😕 And it sucks, because I think the characters of MDZS/CQL are supposed to be messy, and there are some truly delicious, nuanced discussions about justice and love and sacrifice to be had! Unfortunately, I've had to be more liberal than usual with the block button to avoid losing my love of the show due to the impact of fandom discourse.
Honestly, I feel like the whole fandom response thing often comes down to a few overlapping things:
a person is inclined to defend whichever character they like more and/or reject the character who reminds them of people who have hurt them in some way, which is totally normal! But doesn't lend itself well to textual analysis so much as an analysis on this how a piece of media affects me personally, which is an entirely different thing;
whether some element of the golden core transfer reflects a personal trauma (e.g. bodily autonomy) closely enough to shape their perspective on this whole episode in a way that's different from someone who lacks a similar experience;
a person's comfort level in allowing a character's actions -- especially a favorite character's actions -- to be complicated, messy, and maybe even morally questionable;
whether or not someone has access to evidence-based, accurate information about larger social issues like abuse, consent, etc.
Tbh, I also have some pretty strong feelings of my own. I talked about some of that here, from the perspective of a religious person whose faith has some distant parallels to Taoism. And as a survivor who hasn't always had a say in what happens to my body, I struggle with some of exactly what you describe when I think about the golden core thing and especially fandom's common responses too deeply. (It's why I'm writing a JC-centric fic like Crashing Like Stars in the first place, honestly, lmao.)
I think what I struggle with most is the pageantry that's shown in CQL: how WWX and WQ have a whole theater around it that somehow feels almost as bad to me as the act of transfer itself, maybe because it shows how much premeditation went into what is, by definition, gaslighting. I always have to skip this scene on rewatches, tbh. The non-consensual core exchange is bad enough; the playacting feels like a humiliation to me.
And I am not even talking about what this would do with jc insecurities! No one ever appreciated his efforts!
True, but to be fair...why should they? As far as most other characters are concerned, JC is unfriendly, probably not very fun or pleasant company to sit down to tea with, very obviously cares more about his own sect than anyone else's**, and has had the reputation of a disfavored son for years. The only reason to make nice with this guy is purely for politics, but everyone else has enough of their own stuff happening that there's no incentive to try giving JC the benefit of the doubt -- which he wouldn't even accept anyway, since he'd probably interpret it as condescension or pity.
**Which is true for everyone, of course, but he doesn't have the charm or charisma to at least fake concern for people or 'play the game' like JGY.
If you mean that fandom doesn't appreciate his efforts...I'm not really sure what to say to that mostly because I'm still puzzling over HOW DARN POLARIZING this fictional character is. 😂 Even his haters can't be chill about him and it's rather fascinating to watch, like a trainwreck.
And more unfair it's how fandom treats this argument! My loved ones manipulated me for my sake : this doesn't make anything better! I can't imagine jc's feeling.
I think a lot of people confuse things like context and motivation for justification, and even more so when it's a family member and emotionally charged beliefs about family relationships get pulled into the mix.
This ask is messy, but my emotions are messy about this. The only thing that I know is that disturbed me the way fandom treats all of this.
Unfortunately, when not treated carefully, discussions about fictional characters can cross into more real-world consequences. I've certainly blocked people less because of a disagreement in interpretation and more because their line of argument betrayed much deeper biases that made me feel actively unsafe, and I don't always have the resources or bandwidth to try educating folks who aren't here in good faith.
I don't want to be too harsh but I would see wwx and wq as monsters more then heros for this.
I think it's a false dichotomy, honestly. I don't think WWX and WQ are heroes or monsters: I think they're young people put in horrific circumstances with limited resources and support, forced to make decisions with no good possible outcomes. Again, not meant to justify anything, but I think recognizing that the things we label monstrosity is, itself, a very human thing to do is the best way to begin recognizing why it happens so that effective interventions, preventions, and methods for taking responsibility for one's actions to encourage real healing can be put into place.
And I am not even thinking about how can you trust again someone who did this to you! People can't forgive cheating in a relationship, lol.
Oh man, forgiveness is complicated. Some people DO forgive cheating and even worse, for a whole host of different reasons and motivations! (Me, I hold grudges for years.) But forgiveness can also be customized to a situation: maybe forgiveness is earned, not freely offered; maybe it means letting go of one's resentment towards another but not letting that person back into one's life; maybe the refusal to forgive is itself an act of self-empowerment because forgiveness was always coerced and guilt-tripped prior to that. But again, we come back to folks in fandom not always having a solid grounding to have productive, informed conversations about this sort of thing, which can lead to some REALLY unhelpful hot takes going around.
Oh, and the "jc and wwx's relationship is destroyed by jc's jealousy" : I am like: you okay, dude?? But maybe I am the weird one. Sorry if I seem rude! But this argument just triggers me
I don't think you're weird at all. 😊 JC and WWX's relationship is thorny and messy and multi-layered, compounded by unaddressed trauma and mutually conflicting coping strategies and perspectives, exacerbated by the people around them playing political games with their relationship because of their respective positions of power. I think JC's jealousy is a factor, but it comes from being constantly compared and found wanting since childhood, and we have multiple scenes in CQL where WWX does something Cool (TM) and JC will do that half-exasperated smile or roll his eyes with a laugh or something that clearly isn't mean-spirited. The evolution of their relationship is made by a progression of smaller decisions on both of their parts in the context of family dysfunction, loss, war, and political powerplays, and I think flattening it down to "JC is just a jealous bitch" or, conversely, "WWX is just an arrogant asshole" does a disservice to WHY these goddamn characters have taken so many fans emotionally hostage, lmao.
LONG STORY SHORT I agree or am sympathetic with a lot of what you say, anon, with maybe some different perspective on other pieces, but I found that MXTX fandoms became a lot more lovely when I began using blocking features liberally (and, frankly, avoiding Twitter altogether).

ep48 (3/3): wei wuxian reigns as sexy supreme once more
Tumblr media
whistling time! let's go yiliing laozu!
Tumblr media
oohh ghostly hands
Tumblr media
OHHH THESE ARE THE SEX WORKERS HE MURDERED. I think?
Tumblr media
doesn't this woman have similar wounds as wlj did? huh
Tumblr media
talent recognizes talent!
Tumblr media
oh lmao now it's 'talent recognizes unhinged murderer-torturer and sees a potential business partner'
Tumblr media
as little as I care about the yin iron plot at this point, I do like that we're getting this gloves-off honesty from jgy about his perspective and schemes throughout the years. we know the answer, but it's cool that jgy doesn't
Tumblr media
came back after I paused this and uh. he's not looking great boss. someone once compared lxc to handsome squidward and I can kind of see it
Tumblr media
oh this is neat! the candles were taller in the previous episode. this indicates how many hours have gone by inside a building without modern clocks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jgy, tearfully, gathering his remaining legal defenses:
wwx, sick of his dramatic monologues: oh my god would you shut UP
Tumblr media
love this shot. yeah I murdered a bunch of people. yeah I killed your best friend using the music you taught me and your clan's secret texts. yeah I killed my infant son and blamed it on my political rival. yeah I knowingly married my sister. but like. can you let me off? I'm crying a lot, see?
personally I think exile is a pretty good punishment. or would be if he wasn't planning on gaining power in dongyang and they certainly don't need their shit rocked by this guy
personal highlights:
every word of jc and wwx's conversation I was eating up like nom nom nom nom nom.they said sorry!!! wwx ismoving forward and doesn't want to past to trip them up anymore!! I believe in reconciliation
side note but I think going 'oh but what if jc thinks that wwx means forgetting about being brothers when he says forget all that from back then' is a little silly like I understand the anxiety but in context it was pretty clear that they were talking about the painful parts of their past life and not their closeness as family. maybe wwx and jc won't be brothers again! and that's sad in its own way but it doesn't mean they won't be in each other's lives at all
the little touch of jc shaking off jin ling to yell at wwx about how he orphaned jin ling was SO good
jc calling himself a clown
all of zzj's expressions are delightful. jgy is such a freak
jgy being yelled at by the women he killed (?)
jgy sizing up xy as a potential attack dog slash hooligan on retainer
the candles being melted to show time had passed

6 Signs You Need A-level Chemistry Tuition
A-level chemistry tuition is considered a step above O-level; hence, students are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of chemistry. Unlike O-level chemistry tuition classes, in A-level classes, teachers need to help the students to grow a genuine interest in the subject. So, the curriculum and the courses are designed to include various activities to teach students through their experiences.
The A-level courses in chemistry mainly aim to teach you to establish the connection between microscopic, submicroscopic and symbolic levels. Learning these representations will further allow you to construct fundamental knowledge about chemical structures, equations and properties. A thorough sec chemistry tutor can help you to develop an in-depth understanding of these factors so that you can achieve better grades in school.
Deciding to hire a tutor is a major decision and you need to understand whether you actually require a tutor. The following points will definitely help you decide if you need a tutor or just minor adjustments in your learning styles.
6 Signs You Need A Chemistry Tutor
Homework is taking longer - Spending an hour or two on homework is natural, and the complexity of the learning materials increases with each grade. However, if you have started to spend more and more time on your homework it can be a sign that you need additional help. At the beginning of the school year, you used to take two hours to complete your homework, but now you’re taking four. Then you need to start thinking about taking additional help and guidance.
Difficult to stay motivated - Since you’re unable to finish your homework even with all the extra time you’re spending on it, losing your motivation is natural. Losing your motivation will further push you to slack off and procrastinate. This is one of the warning signs before poor results. If you notice that you have no motivation to even start studying chemistry, it's time to hire an IP chemistry tutor.
Grades are declining consistently - Poor results once or twice and getting a bad grade in an exam or two are natural. But if your grades are declining consistently, and you’re unable to improve even after working hard and trying harder. This a sign that you need to identify the problem areas in your comprehension; maybe there’s a particular topic that you cannot understand. Or maybe you’re unable to solve certain types of problems.
Poor time management - Slacking off and procrastination are the roots of problematic time management. Poor motivation originating from losing interest in a subject leads to poor time management. Since you do not start working on your assignments and homework in time, you start rushing at the last moment. This not only further diminishes your abilities, but also creates a larger negative impact on your grades.
Inefficient organisation - If you’re facing continuous challenges in organising your schoolwork, pending assignments and so on, maybe the support you require is more fundamental. So, you need to understand whether your organisation has become so inefficient that it is affecting your academic routine and performance. A JC chemistry tutor can not only help you to understand the subject well but also guide you through organisation and time management processes.
All work and no reward - Often time, rather than slacking off students start spending more time on the problems they are unable to solve. They start to obsess over the chapters they are yet to complete and revise. This obsession and continuous focus on one problem create a bird-eye-view which blocks every other perspective on the same. So, regardless of the time spent on a topic and the hard work, the net result stays quite low.
If you believe you have started to encounter these signs for some time now, it is time for you to book classes at A-level chemistry tuition, at the earliest!

Fic Finder
Jan 19th
~*~
1. Hello, I have lost a fic! It was an arranged-marriage au where WWX marries into the Lan sect. During the wedding all the Lans refuse to look towards WWX which hurts him deeply. Later on LWJ explains it is Lan tradition for no one to look upon the bride until the husband has removed her veil. This was just one of many cultural differences between the Lan and Jiang that the fic explored. Overall I think the fic was kind of somber and angsty? Probably had a happy ending though. Any ideas?
FOUND? Concord by Deastar (T, 41k, WangXian, Arranged Marriage, Gūsū Lán Sect Rules, Depression, Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending)
FOUND? In Love and War by Cataclysmic_Calamity (E, 68k, wangxian, A/B/O, Canon Divergence, Alpha LWJ, Omega WWX, Arranged Marriage, Kind of a slow burn, enemies to lovers ish, rampant sexual tension, WWX is a Menace to society and LWJ is doing his best, Miscommunication, past emotional abuse, Dubious Consent, Consensual Non-Consent, Semi-Public Sex, Anal Fingering, Dom/sub, Anal Sex)
~*~
2. Hello, I need help finding a fic. I'm pretty sure I found this fic through your blog.
It's from Lan Wangji's perspective and takes place during the early sunshot campaign before Wei Wuxian's return. Wen outposts are attacked by some unknown entity and Lan Wangji goes to investigate. The culprit is a human shaped being covered in resentful energy. After a few confrontations Lan Wangji discovers that the being is an unconscious Wei Wuxian and finds a way to free him from the resentful energy. @bluekittenfire
~*~
3. (First part added to an itmf) I cannot remember what it is called but there was one fic where WWX loses his foot/leg and the Wen build him a wooden prosthetic that I really enjoyed and am looking for more fics like this. Where characters are dealt a difficult hand but they work through it and yeah, any recs would be much appreciated thank you!
FOUND? we’re starting at the end by Miss_Enthusiasimal (M, 92k, WangXian, JC & WWX, Time Travel, Canon Divergence, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Golden Core Reveal, Burial Mounds, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Starvation, emaciation, Cannibalism, Self-Harm, Amputation, Suicidal Thoughts, Sunshot Campaign, let JZX and WWX be friends club)
~*~
4. Hi! I’m sorry to bother you, but maybe you can help me? I’m looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian is fighting at what I remember to be Qiongqi Path. I think Jiang Cheng makes a smart remark (something like “Are you just gonna play your flute or you going to help us?!”) and Wei Wuxian stops playing his dizi long enough to give JC the finger… only for them to realise what it means that he’s stopped playing and a flute can still be heard. Not long after LWJ pulls Su She out of the foliage with the other flute.
Vaguely I remember it being a fix it fic where less people die than in canon.

5. hi!! i’m been looking for a fic for days. i read it forever ago but it’s during the cloud recess study arc and in it lan xichen realizes how awful the jiangs are treating wwx and tries to subtly convince him to leave tywng and stay in gusu bc he knows how much lwj likes him and he sees how talented wwx is and knows he would be a good asset for any sect to have. a specific scene i remember is that lxc would pretend to accidentally bump into wwx to talk to him. and they would go on walks and lwj saw it and got jealous. i think lxc was lowkey manipulative but in a way where he was doing it to make wwx care enough about himself to leave the jiangs. it was not jiang clan friendly at all. i kno this is so vague sorry about that. but it’s driving me crazy how i can’t find it when i know ive read it more then once. thanks for any help u can give

6. Hello! I’m looking for a modern AU where WWX lives in and runs a theater, I believe LWJ is hosting his orchestra there for practice and for an event??? And it’s important that it’s successful to keep the theater open. I believe at some point, someone throws a rock or a brick through the front doors, and I believe the jiangs show up in the end and WWX confronts that. 7. Hi! I hope doing this right, can tou help me find a fic ? I remember that the sects start making alliances because they notice how the Wens are acting. The Jiangs and the Lans are going to ally through marriage, the choice is up to LXC, but because he is jealous of LZ, thinking he never had it difficult, when WY is offered to the Lans, LXC decides to marry him to make LZ suffer, knowing LZ and WY like each other. 9. Hello! I'm looking for a specific fic that I'm afraid might've been deleted. It's a modern au set in the 90s in California (possibly). The Spotify playlist "LWJ DJs your life 1999" goes with it. What I remember is that LWJ is both a goth club DJ and a cello player, WWX drives a terrible car, and the gang is looking to buy the perfect huge house to collectively live in. It might've been part of a series, there's a Halloween party bit where LWJ dresses up at a classic style gothic vampire and curates an extensive party playlist. Thanks for the help! @aceaviatrix

14. Hi, I am looking for a fic set post-canon (I think). I remember Wei Wuxian maybe living in the jingshi, possibly teaching classes, but definitely going into Caiyi with Lan Wangji and during a festival Wangji wins a game and the prize is this ugly turtle statue that Wei Wuxian adores. They go on to prank Lan Qiren with the turtle statue. I loved this scene but I can’t remember what fic it came from, please help!
FOUND! I think 14for the fic finder is from the actual book. It sounds like the last extra chapter. / Not saying there isn't a fic involving it, but #14 sounds a lot like the Yunmeng extra in book five, as well. Ring toss, ugly turtle statue, and Wei Wuxian considering pranking Lan Qiren included. The only difference is the location. Your searcher may have mistaken it for fic, especially if they read translations online. / #14 is one of the extra chapters from the actual novel (Extra 7 in the official English translation)

I think it’s easy to forget that Wei Wuxian is strongly villain-coded. We see the story from his perspective, we know his reasons and justifications, if you’re watching CQL and paying attention you can figure out the core transfer before the reveal. We know that Wen Qing and Wen Ning are good guys. We know that the Burial Mounds gang is a bunch of tired uncle/aunts trying to grow some stupid radishes, a four year old, and the Disaster Bi Gang (none of whom have swords, even!) We know that Wei Wuxian has his heart in the right place, that he feels an incredibly strong debt to the Wen Siblings and by extension their remaining family, that he has no golden core and has no choice but to forsake the sword and cultivate the demonic path, that he defects from the Jiang sect in a fake fight with his brother so that the Jiang sect won’t suffer the consequences of his actions, even though they have Secret Soup later.
But if you’re not us, the audience? If you’re, for example, Sect Leader Yao?
Hey did you all hear about how Wei Wuxian got kicked out of the Cloud Recesses for violently lashing out at the Jin sect heir?
Hey did you all see how he doesn’t carry his sword any more and claims it’s because he’s so badass that he doesn’t need it? And he has that Stygian tiger seal, so maybe it’s not bullshit? Can you even fight against that with a sword?
What kind of power does this guy even have? He’s a teenager! He drinks all the time and he’s moody and surly and holy shit did you hear what he did at that Wen outpost? He tortured all of them to death! Ugly stuff, man. Gruesome way to go. Maybe even worse than what Wen Ruohan did, at least a hot poker doesn’t make you claw your own eyes out.
Oh shit, he just stormed into this banquet and just SAID “if I want to kill someone who can stop me” and he still has that tiger seal I think we should be worried???
He just busted a bunch of Wen cultivators out of prison! And then he ran off to the Burial Mounds??? And his sect leader didn’t even know anything about it? Is he going rogue? Is he starting an uprising? This demonic cultivation stuff really seems to be corrupting him!
Oh man he got kicked out of the Jiang sect? You mean even the man he grew up with, who he was raised with practically as a brother, can’t control him any more? Did you hear about his fierce corpse? They call him the Ghost General! He’s unstoppable! What are we going to do if he comes for us?
He could be building a whole army in there, Sect Leader Jin said so! Who knows what kind of sick, twisted stuff he’s getting up to! Don’t forget all that horrible shit in the Sunshot Campaign, remember when he was raising the Wens’ own dead to turn against them? He could do that to us! He’s working with the Wens now, even! He’s gone totally crazy!
We can’t let some outlaw have all this power. It’s putting the safety of all of us at risk. What if it’s just another Wen Ruohan waiting to happen? (especially applicable if you’re thinking he’s using Yin iron as in CQL!) If we let him consolidate his power too much, then he’ll be unstoppable!
HOLY SHIT he murdered the Jin sect heir and his cousin with his fierce corpse! That’s the man his former shijie married! The one he punched in the Cloud Recesses, remember when the Lans kicked him out because he was so unruly and disrespectful? Yeah! It was probably revenge! Have we done anything to him? Oh gods what if we’re next???
A major point of MDZS/CQL is how important reputation is, and how that affects everything. Wei Wuxian’s reputation is straight-up villainous. We, the audience, know that he’s trying his best, that he’s a traumatized teenager with a shitload of emotional baggage trying to do the right thing and repay a colossal debt, that he’s made choices that he now has to try and live with, etc. But to the rest of the world this guy has fucking lost it, he’s gone off the deep end and he has an incredibly powerful weapon and a mode of cultivation that seems to corrupt you and turn you into a monster, and frankly, they’re not wrong! It does affect his temperament and he does end up killing a lot of people and he is out of control!
MDZS/CQL is interesting precisely because we’re getting an entire Villain Apology Story. A long time ago I read a post by someone on here saying they find Jiang Cheng challenging to write about because he’s the protagonist of a different story, and he really is. He’s the guy whose former shixiong turns into a villain in pursuit of power, the Obi-Wan to WWX’s Anakin, the one who sees how incredible power corrupts and is obligated to fight against it. Having to fight against a former ally who was seduced by “the dark side” (in this case, demonic cultivation) is a story that gets told over and over, but always condemning the one who went to the dark side. He’s the blackened protagonist, the aren’t you tired of being nice, don’t you want to go ape shit power fantasy, where we as the audience can justify his actions because we know he did it to save his brother, his sister, the Wen remnants he owes a debt to. He isolates himself from the people who love him to protect them, he refuses Lan Wangji’s help because he’s convinced he just wants to lock him up and stop him from using demonic cultivation because he’s a righteous upstanding Lan (totally unaware of LWJ’s intense crush, obviously). He jokes about it but he knows he’s being painted as the villain, and he’s in denial about how much that will affect him, because after all… he’s the Yiling Laozu, and he knows his power. But so does everyone else, and they’re rightfully terrified!
And yet? When he comes back, LWJ still wants him, still cares for him, will move heaven and earth to protect him. JC cares about him so much he’s having a Constant Crisis about it. And WWX has not forgotten his shijie or shidi, immediately cares about Jin Ling, and still is the man who really just wanted to be free and grow some goddamn radishes. He accepts that he paid for what he’s done with his death, and just wants to start over.
It just drives me nuts when people pretend like WWX was an angel who did nothing wrong because the whole POINT is that he was a villain-coded gay (well, bi) and the man you had to really watch out for was the polite, thoughtful, soft-spoken one that worked his way up from a tragic backstory. It’s a whole subversion and it’s awesome!

Since then, there remains only one creature that has never been caught. The Jiang’s retreated a long time ago. If fate were a rock!) Jiang Cheng suddenly finds his whole life balanced on the head of a pin — on the flimsy promise of a human boy. I have a headcanon about WHY Jiang Cheng lead the Siege and why he’s so into hunting demonic cultivators. You can consider it as my own theory or just my thoughts. We all know that what happened to burial siege against WWX and JC hunting demonic cultivators are very vague in the novel. Most of it are just rumors and told in third person perspective so we can only assume and have different interpretations about it. Yes, the author will give you hints and context about what she want to say to her readers but it can always be interpreted in many ways whether she like it or not. There are no one correct answer, especially if we’re dealing with something artistic like a novel.
Toxic Wangxian fans and antis might believe the reason why JC did those things is simply JC hated WWX and want him to suffer. It’s simple and obvious but that contradicts some of his actions. Best example of that is when JC returned WWX’s flute in the end of the novel. WWX’s flute is like a trophy for his achievements and yet this person that they claimed hate WWX returned the flute as if he never acknowledge the siege as his achievement. Because of that, I will never be convinced that JC only hated WWX. His feelings is more complicated than that.
My headcanon will be centered in this line by JC after WWX no longer control his demonic cultivation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My conclusion for why he did those things is actually quite simple. I think for JC, it don’t matter if he caught a good or bad demonic cultivators. What matters to him is these demonic cultivators can lose control of their power. Even if it’s just 1% that they might lose their control. As long as they are demonic cultivators or suspicious, he need to catch them. Of course, JC is not doing these to protect people. He’s doing these as his responsibility. Maybe he want to be a responsible sect leader since what happened to WWX is his responsibility or maybe he just see it as his job and nothing else. I perceived JC as someone who has a high sense of responsibility after all. His job is basically like a police man. Sometimes you arrest the right people and sometimes you got the wrong one. Take note that JL only confirmed that JC never let them go when he caught one but never confirmed that JC torture them or didn’t specifically say what he do with them. We can also assume he just want to monitor them just to make sure the suspicious demonic cultivators are not a threat. If he really torture them why the other sect didn’t do anything about it? I don’t even think Yunmeng Jiang Sect is the strongest sect. He’s also pretty much open about it and never hide that he arrest people.
But why he need to do it in harsh way? Let’s all remember how LWJ try to convince WWX to come to Gusu with him. Did it work? No, right? That’s why after LWJ found WWX as MXY, he claimed that WWX will come with him in Gusu without asking WWX if he ever want to or not because he knows WWX will run away. That’s exactly what JC is doing, he need to use force. People probably saw him being harsh without seeing the whole picture. That’s why arresting became torture for others.
As for the siege, it’s not about JC killing WWX but more like JC trying to defeat a demonic cultivator who lose control. Maybe there’s also political pressure that happened consider he’s an inexperienced young sect leader during that time. We can’t really say much but only assume. This is the only conclusion that actually make sense for me. When he hit WWX as MXY with Zidian, there’s a possibility that he assume it’s WWX’s bad spirit and want to get rid of it because as we all know WWX’s death is not normal. It’s similar to Nie Mingjue’s. If they didn’t handle the bad spirit, it might become a threat so him trying to catch WWX is more like him wanting to monitor WWX.
Later on, we witnessed JC returning WWX’s flute which is considered as WWX’s weapon because he use it to control corpses. He’s basically giving the demonic cultivator a weapon to make troubles. I think at this point, WWX passed JC’s evaluation and JC noticed that LWJ is always there by WWX’s side. He probably thought if WWX lose control again, he has LWJ or he thinks WWX is doing fine now mentally so he probably thinks it’s ok to return the flute to its owner. Of course, I feel like there’s regret because of how their relationship fell apart and his bad judgement that push him to lead the siege.
PS I wish Mo Dao Zu Shi adaptations explore his character more. Like why he did what he did? That’s probably why lots of people praise Word of Honor drama despite the imperfections. Because in that drama, they explore deeply Gao Chong and Scorpion King’s character. They are supporting morally grey characters but WOH show how much important they are for the story.

Got an AO3 comment calling Jiang Cheng ungrateful in both canon and fics, which is such a bonkers take. (The comment wasn’t rude, so I’m writing about it here instead of dropping an essay in the poor person’s reply.) I guess maybe if he had known about and been a willing participant in the core transfer, that would be a reasonable response, but none of that was the case at all. Instead, we have a character who is established as caring about the people he loves more than anything. He goes through enormous trauma, which leaves him unable (he believes) to avenge some of those people. Then one of his few remaining loved ones makes a truly awful sacrifice to “help” Jiang Cheng without his knowledge or consent. The lack of that would be bad enough; what I think makes it much worse is that someone he loves getting hurt for his sake is one of the the worst possible things that could happen to him given his values. The core transfer gives him his power back, sure, but I do not think there is any way that he would ever see it as a good thing given the way it happened and the cost. It’s ridiculous to suggest that he should feel grateful for it and to judge him for responding badly. (Bonus is that he’s canonically awful at expressing and processing his emotions, which his family clearly knows but that a weird number of audience seem to have missed despite it having been implied and explicitly stated repeatedly. I think there’s a moment when Jiang Yanli looks directly into the camera and explains it, just in case anybody didn’t notice.)
That isn’t to say that it’s not clear why WWX does the core transfer. His decision makes sense to him, and we’re experiencing the world through his perspective. But it’s also very obvious that it isn’t a good decision! He’s got terrible self-esteem and confusion about his role/obligations in general, and the trauma/lack of sleep/fear for JC pile on to make his judgment utterly awful at that time. (Also he is a child! They’re all children!) The tragedy isn’t that JC is ungrateful for the sacrifice, it’s that WWX gets so caught up in needing to fix the situation that he goes through with something that never should have happened, and wouldn’t have if there had been anybody in a position to stop him. Wen Qing’s role there is complicated, but it’s obvious that WWX knows that JC and Jiang Yanli would never have let him go through with it. He knows that it’s a bad idea, which is even sadder.
Anyway, now I want (to write?) a fic where the divergence point is WWX coming to JC all excited that he’s found a way to give him his core, and JC is horrified enough at the prospect that he snaps out of his funk. Cue lots of yelling about why WWX thought JC would be okay with that kind of sacrifice on his behalf, then hugging.

In modern au I see a lot of people portray jc as the house husband. I know he loves his family and he would enjoy that! But I think of jc as someone who would love to work. In canon he is the sect leader, and maybe he doesn't like everything about his job, but I think he enjoys what he does, because he wouldn't be so good otherwise. He has plenty of good qualities that are often overlooked. I imagine him as a vet (he loves animals), or an architect (he builds lotus pier) or a ceo (sect leader). But maybe I'm just projecting too much, lol. I'm the kind of person who needs to work to satisfy themselves. So, lol. Also, I see this in fics where he is with wq. And he is a bottom, but I don't appreciate how this is stereotyped. But Jc is something that can be so personal. What do you think about that?
Personally, I'm more open to a variety of modern AU takes based on how well an author can sell me on it. Like, some of the things you describe seem like more natural or obvious fits for my own interpretation of JC as well, and I tend to default to those in my own unwritten imaginings. But finding a writer who can sell me on a take that I never considered is always a fascinating adventure! It's probably the academic in me being like, "You have A Premise with a high burden of proof but low emotional stakes compared to real-world bullshit? THAT'S SO INTERESTING PLEASE ARGUE IT FOR ME." 🤣
I do agree that JC would go stir-crazy as a kept man, but now that I think about it, I bet there are some LOVELY possibilities to explore a 24-hour D/s dynamic that would keep him very busy AND address some of those delicious vulnerabilities where he's wrapped himself around his own axles and needs some straightening out by one or more loving but very determined partner(s).
Re: bottoming - oof, I feel like men bottoming (who does it, who doesn't, etc) is a weirdly Complicated one in fandom? Especially when it runs up against cultural differences. I find it unfortunate that a fair number of folks confuse bottoming and subbing, and occasionally you get it taken to places which are very OOC even in the context of the fic itself and clearly conforming to some kind of preconceived This Is How Sex Works template. Or, like, certain acts like pegging get written with an uncomfortably (and ironically) patriarchal tone to it in a way that a) flattens what is fundamentally just a sexual activity, no value judgment necessary, and b) an activity with the potential to be explored with nuance, sensitivity, and emotional impact in regards to the genders of the sexual partners involved.
(I mean, it's disingenuous to pretend that pegging and similarly 'subversive' acts don't often come with gender-related baggage for everyone involved, but the question is whether it's done with the intent for mutual empowerment and/or intimacy and/or just the pleasure of it, or if it's done for non-consensual humiliation.)
That said, I'm one of those folks with a serious "get JC railed until he cries with catharsis" fandom bicycle agenda, soooooo. 😂 When I'm in doubt, I always default to looking at the scene in the context of the fic to analyze the perspective from which it's being addressed, and make my personal decision on whether or not I'm the target audience from there.
JC IS INDEED SOMETHING THAT CAN BE SO PERSONAL, UGH, FUCK THIS GUY, LOOK AT ALL THIS RAMBLING FOR AN OTHERWISE STRAIGHTFORWARD ASK

So, that argument I seen about how fans describe characters with stereotypes of YA western novels and that they should search the web for Wuxia/Xianxia tropes instead and apply those. I DISAGREE. I think people should just stop trying to just fit every character in tropes.
Yes, you may be more accurate with xianxia tropes that with western ones, but characters are usually more complex than a trope, and MXTX like to subvert those.
From applying xianxia tropes we get stupid takes in the fandom like demonic cultivation is BAD, makes people go crazy, destroys your golden core and/or prevents the reencarnation.
This kind of takes are common in fandom because it's how it works in most xianxia novels and shows, but is not how it works in mdzs and people would get that if instead of thinking about tropes focused on what the novel actually tells us.
So, yeah sure, search xianxia tropes if you want, it's actually interesting not just seeing how they can apply to characters, but also seeing when and how they DON'T, after all you need to know the tropes to fully appreciate when MXTX subverts them. Just stop trying to reduce characters to tropes, either western tropes or chinese tropes.
I AGREE |ʘ‿ʘ)╯ that you should always read the particular text and prioritize what that text tells you and how it frames things, because as you said, sometimes works subvert certain popular themes/archetypes etc! HOWEVER, I took that anon's meaning to be that if people want to draw comparisons, and go more in depth into things, they could look a little more into a general knowledge of cultivation themes, where the concept of cultivation comes from, heroic ideals (so they don't say stuff like -WWX forced his Golden core on jc without consent >:-/), maybe a general knowledge of Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, if their only lens is Christianity. A good work will generally give you everything you need to know about how to feel for the characters and events unfolding in it, however there's nothing wrong with getting more knowledge and enriching your understanding! - as long as you don't prioritize it over what the novel and author are trying to communicate when discussing that particular work. Knowledge should always give you a broader perspective not drive you to shove things into boxes even when they don't fit.
Also unorthodox paths are not always evil, or indicative of an evil character!
