[podfic] Let the Streetlights Guide You Home by jellyfishfireI (M, 3.5-4H, modern, car racing au, references to drug use & underage driving, UST, the fic by tellthemstories) I describe this as the "illegal streetcar racing AU you never knew you needed". I was introduced to this story by Jellyfisfire's JAW-DROPPINGLY INCREDIBLE podfic and I was instantly and irrevocably *hooked*. The story is insanely well written with emotions that will punch you in the gut and an incredible reinterpretation of canon into the illegal street racing world. Add to that Jelly's voice which pulls out every one of those emotions and the bass thumping and tires squealing and I was HOOKED

I found a fan translation of the book by priest but no official release in English, so not sure how book fans will take it. It's more martial arts than monster fighting but the costumes and dialogue are to DIE FOR. Although I'm pretty sure everyone around these parts already know, I figured...

and like! i do understand. people have a thing for using bags and shortcuts. rather than pencils, pens, and markers, i'm gonna take my pencil case; rather than a character who strongly believes in rules and is convinced enforcing them as strictly as possible is the key to a just society, i'm gonna say a "cop", like, that's shorter. but at this point it's taking "a group of things X" and calling it "the thing that's (in our social circles) universally considered Bad", and people who like the character that possesses the group of things X Are Not Going To Like It Probably.

i do (think) i understand what's going on here! but

a) as fun as a modern au thought experiment is, it's ultimately kind of futile in this case because "feudal lords with superpowers" are fictional character we're able to sympathize with even if they do ~bad things~; once you make them into, i don't know, millionaires or cops, they... naturally and obviously stop being sympathetic, right, and

b) professions aren't... personality test results? this is one of the reasons why i was such a hater of the ideal modern professions polls, it's not a 1:1 thing, it doesn't work this way. oh this person is X and Y and Z, they would be a perfect lawyer! uh oh, but they're ten years into their career as a florist. and especially in a story like mdzs that's about a specific setting with specific rules, it's--it's not going to make sense! how on earth are wwx the engineer, nhs the influencer and lwj the musician going to meet and hang out naturally and then have reasons to keep on hanging out? unless we're doing a dream coffeeshop au where everyone's stupid passionate about pastries, it's not going to work. either no one's a cop/florist/tormented grad student or everyone is. i think.

chaperoning a new orphan across the Pacific runs into complications. this fic!!!! has this beautiful cinematic quality to it and an exquisite sense of place. about two tired men in san francisco tasked with raising teenagers, and also about food service and disapora and the sea and love found in the smell of salt air and doing school enrollment forms in a diner with an almost-stranger at 3am

Wei Wuxian plays the flute. Someone in Wei Wuxian's apartment complex plays violin. Sometimes, they play the flute and the violin together, and it's… nice. It's really nice. It's sort of the nicest thing going on in his life right now, honestly. this fic is art to be shared; i wish i could buy it in hardcover and gift it to all my friends. i read this in spring 2020 before watching the untamed and absolutely loved it, and then i made my best friend read it and she loved it. there’s something about people sitting in different rooms playing music together, the quiet company of it all, that was so comforting to read at that time, and so, so nice to revisit now

A mysterious garden blooms on Lan Zhan's rooftop. His internet forum pen pal gives great gardening advice but never seems to sleep. The man who works at the florist, who keeps reviving the plants that Lan Zhan can't seem to keep alive, has a beautiful smile. These things are related. a modern with magic au (ft plant magic!!) that feels so alive and joyful! i don't have magic or a rooftop garden but somehow this made me feel incredibly seen?? i laughed, i cried tears of sheer overwhelm, and my face hurt from smiling. if you've ever remotely liked any coffeeshop au, or if you look back on anastasia (1997) as a formative experience of any kind, this fic is for you

When Lan Wangji was thirteen, Wei Ying was sent to Cloud Recesses. When Lan Wangji was sixteen, she admitted she was in love. When Lan Wangji was seventeen, Wei Ying was thrown into the Burial Grounds. And the Yiling Patriarch came out. WLW PRINCESS BRIDE AU!! vaguely canon-adjacent but in a way that will only enhance your understanding of the show if you ever decide to watch it. beautiful flashbacks, clear writing, and pure fantasy. my face hurt from smiling (rated t but do heed the warnings)

In which Wei Wuxian is a curse worker secretly searching for a lost dragon, Lan Wangji is his new assistant, and the two things may not be entirely unrelated. modern with magic casefic, this time with DRAGONS. a thoughtfully-crafted adventure-romance that embraces the tenderest parts of mdzs—the resignation to being unwanted and eventual delight in being known and loved—and allows them to fully unfold and guide the story. a perfect comfort reread; for a six-month period the two podfics of trrty were the soundtrack to my every walk to the grocery store. (includes much of the broader ensemble, so if learning everyone's names at once feels daunting, you may want to dive in after you've read another untamed fic or two)

Chef's kiss by 74243 (untamed/mdzs, 6.5k)

Maybe even feed her a hot meal or two, Jin Zixuan wrote. It sounds like she might need it. Lan Zhan had not wanted to do it. She hated showing out-of-towners around New York, and the only thing worse than that was letting them eat at her restaurant, where they inevitably ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, and expected Lan Zhan to come and listen to their idiotic feedback after every course. So Wei Ying was a surprise. butch chef lan zhan! the tiring, frenetic pace of working in a kitchen! the world of this fic is so gentle and richly imagined—for a fic that’s at least 30% smut this gave me butterflies, and i could read at least ten thousand more words about the vegan suzhounese restaurant lan zhan dreams of opening

Mobei Jun is a ghost. Shang Qinghua loves him anyway. THE short story for when you’re in the mood for a light spooky story. I read this on a train and had to hold myself back from emoting too loudly in public. the sheer ROMANCE of the dialogue! the aching and loneliness and regency-style Not Touching and thrills of discovery and companionship and recognition in one another! this is a ghost au about a side-pairing from a novel I have yet to finish, so you definitely do not need to be familiar to enjoy it!!

First it was the beekeeper suit. Then the astronaut one. THEN the Darth Vader costume. Every time a different attire. Lan Zhan is starting to think he better be changing grocery shop soon if he wants to fill his cart in peace without stumbling upon that weirdo during his weekly visit at the store.

Things he knows about said man: 1) he is competitive af, 2) he seems around his age, thirty five at most, 3) he has a flower shop in town, 4) he has a son.

The last thing, he knows because the child is always perched on the man’s cart when they shop. The third thing, he knows because his brother Lan Huan is the owner of the building where said man works. The second, he noticed once in passing, as they both waited in line to pay at the express line. And the first, he got to realize since day fucking one, when they entered the shop together and noticed they were following a similar path and unconsciously started rushing their way through their respective lists as fast as possible to win over the other.

It’s been four weeks already and Lan Zhan regrets moving to that part of town big time. The day he discovers something new, however, is when the florist decides to wear a simple black mask over the lower half of his face instead a full on costume. So even the usual lady clients cannot flirt with him asking if it’s yet another laundry day. The lot of them surprised to see him dressed normally for once. If wearing a black mask, black latex gloves and a black turtleneck in August can even be considered normal to begin with. The fact that he also looks unbelievably hot dressed in such a manner goes without saying. Not that Lan Zhan’s looking, of course.

Yet, it’s one thing to dress to impress and another to be affectionate towards your own child without taking your mask and gloves off not even to kiss him on the cheek or to check if one of his baby teeth is really falling off or not. So, when one of the ladies jokes about it, nobody expects the child to plainly say what Lan Zhan ends up hearing that day.

“If Dad touches my skin I’m going to die.”

The fact that said dad also conveniently runs away and forgets to take most of their bagged groceries with him right afterwards is also telling. But for the life of his Lan Zhan doesn’t know what such a dramatic exit can possibly mean.

initially I thought to let Mo XuanYu be the baby, but then I kept A-Yuan/SiZhui. Also he is not Wei Ying’s actual son, but more on that later. ALSO he’s a savage child with snark for ages and channels every ounce of his adoptive father’s mischievous spirit.

Just like in “Pushing Daisies”, Wei Ying can revive the dead for a minute or two just by touching them [from Wikipedia: “If something is revived for more than one minute, a similar "life value" in the vicinity drops dead as a form of balance. If he touches the revived person or thing a second time, they die permanently.”]

But in this AU, ever since he was young, Wei Ying has revived a bunch of people, in the beginning without worrying too much of the consequences, not knowing someone of the same value (someone close to the revived dead person) must die if not given back to the realm of death after those two minutes.

His family used to take care of the needs of mourning families by running a funeral home. As a child he would simply touch the dead and go his merry way, happy to make others happy. But the dead would always run away, fearing their families would never take them back or not believe them to have been actually revived. Unaware of this, with bodies disappearing left and right, Wei Ying’s parents are accused of smuggling organs and corpses and are taken to prison before being put in house arrest for the rest of their sentence.

(In the meantime Wei Ying has been looked after by a new family, but after coming of age he decided to wait until the end of his parents’ sentence and buy them a house where they could live together again. In fact, he lives with them and his son) -> a perfectly rational choice bc I wanted to give them a chance to look after each other, okay? Also because a family trying to keep a common secret is fun and fresh and the exact opposite of the movie “Keeping Mum”, which is highly recommend btw.

He never experimented with the double-touch until (at fifteen) accidentally reviving a corpse of a dog, getting scared of it, and consequently smacking its tail in a (hilarious) fit of frustration bc “oh damn it... not again/go back to sleep I cannot deal with you/dogs are scary” and so on. The poor guy plopped down as if nothing had happened afterwards.

After that he learned his lesson and knew he could never touch a revived person again. Also dogs, especially dogs. They bite >:(

The first time Wei Ying actually understood something was wrong was when he was 21 and revived his stepsister YanLi, but her mother died as a consequence. He has brought his stepbrother Jiang Cheng back to life, but his own father was taken in his place. Before that time he had never considered the damage he had caused, because the consequences never involved his close ones but mere strangers up until then. So he vowed to never use his powers again afterwards.

The only exception being A-Yuan/SiZhui: the child was found in a dumpster, abandoned at three months old. Wei Ying revived him and didn’t want to wonder who might have died in the baby’s place... nor did he care. So he asked his parents to help. They’ve been raising the child together for five years, but Wei Ying has never directly touched him, always wearing gloves and masks around him.

He has also never hugged his step-siblings either since reviving them from their car accident from fourteen years back, but neither YanLi or Jiang Cheng knows the reason why. The only thing they know is that at the time, right after seeing them waking up from their “coma” and attending their parents’ funeral, Wei Ying has distanced himself from them, never to return.

(Insert shenanigans with Wei Ying trying his best not to run into his siblings, before they actually discover the truth along the way and bundle him up in quilts and coats just to be able to hug the hell out of him)

Lan Zhan is a detective and thanks to Wei Ying’s powers they solve crimes together. THEY REVIVE THE DEAD FOR TWO MINUTES and ask them what they remember before dying (which is basically the whole point of “Inquiry”, right?) and then Wei Ying touches them back and they drop dead for good.

Wei Ying knows his limits now and doesn’t play with empathy (got it? got it??)

Jin Ling has BOTH of his parents (can you imagine??) and he’s best friend with Lan Zhan and Lan Huan’s younge cousin, JingYi. And they SNOOP like nobody’s business bc they know there’s something fishy about “Uncle Wei”. But also they love to play with the other baby even if they pretend to be tough. They’re also friends with Wen Ning, who will teache them archery for their after-school activities as soon as they start elementary school and they are thrilled.

Wen Ning was actually one of the few corpses Wei Ying has revived in childhood that made it back home and was believed by others. (Wen Ning was still a child himself when he died, so he went straight back home and nobody questioned it, too happy to care......... which is basically canon)

His sister Wen Qing is the only friend Wei Ying has that knows about his secret and she’s the one suggesting Lan Zhan to..........wait a minute or two before leaving the morgue where she works at.

“You might never know what the dead could be able to say after you switch off the lights. You get me?”

He doesn’t get it. Not at first.

But! He grows interested in Wei Ying and the fact that he cannot touch his own child. Is it an allergy? Is it an illness? Lan Zhan has questions and he needs to find out the truth by himself.

Wei Ying’s child needs to be properly held by a parent at least once in his life tho... and Lan Zhan is made by very fine, very expensive husband material.

(I wanted him to meet Wei Ying’s parents. Sue me.)

Also I thought Wei Ying would like to make things grow (hence the florist!au you never asked for) bc he might feel guilty about the things he has done + his trust issues about getting attached to someone and then seeing them die AND THEN HAVING TO ACTUALLY LET THEM GO FOR REAL.

wangxian florist au where wwx shows up to lwj’s flower shop every other week or so to pick up flowers for a date. he always describes the person he’s going out with, and asks lwj to pick the flowers that best suit them. lwj, even though he is totally infatuated with wwx and completely jealous of these people, always picks the most perfect flowers. it’s not like lwj can ask wwx out, he’s only ever there to pick up flowers for his dates, and that would be quite inappropriate.

over time, they become friends. chatting more and more when wwx comes to pick up his flowers. then wwx comes around more often. sometimes to pick up flowers for a date, sometimes for his sister, or a friend who was just in a play. sometimes he brings lwj coffee and chats, saying he was just in the neighborhood. they feel like they could talk for hours. wwx tells him everything that went on in his day. tells him he’s afraid of dogs. tells him his sister loves to cook. tells him hes sort of a romantic (lwj knows that already. the man buys flowers for every occasion). lwj, in turn, tells him about his brother, his uncle, his bunnies, his favorite flower.

sometimes wwx walks him home, talking about this and that on the way. waving him goodbye at his door. saying he hopes to see him soon. it makes lwj’s heart do funny things. things he’s never had his heart do before. but still, lwj knows wwx is going out with other people. he still stops by to pick up flowers. and lwj always helps. he wants wwx to be happy after all.

but one evening, just before lwj closes up shop, wwx walks through the door. he walks right up to the counter, a smile on his face.

“lan zhan,” he says. “i need some flowers.”

“then you came to the right place.” lwj responds, hoping that they aren’t for a romantic evening.

wwx laughs.

lwj asks, “who are they for?”

“this guy. i want to date him, but im not sure he feels the same way.” wwx says, tapping his nose. “and i think flowers would get the message across.”

“okay.” lwj’s hope is crushed to smithereens. he sets up to make a bouquet, knowing this routine by heart. “what is he like?”

“well, he’s gorgeous. sweet. kind. at first he kind of seems cold and aloof, but once you get to know him he’s warm and wonderful to be around. i feel like i could tell him anything, like i can trust him. like he could take care of me.”

‘i could take care of you.’ lwj thinks bitterly.

“he doesn’t fuck around with what he believes in either. he stands up and says it like it is, which i admire. he’s tall and broad and strong. but gentle. he’s so very good at listening, even when im spouting nonsense. he’s kinda quiet, and likes to be alone, but he’s also great at talking. i hope he’s okay being alone with me.” wwx continues.

lwj begins to look around at his flowers, trying to determine which flower fits the traits. trying not to think about how this guy kind of sounds like him.

“i love watching him work too, he’s so dedicated and does it so well. its kinda sexy. and he’s so cute, and handsome. and funny! god, he’s so funny. he makes me laugh, and makes me think, and makes me want to be a better person, y’know? honestly, he’s just the perfect guy. i adore spending time with him.”

lwj nods, doing his best not to show the blatant jealousy on his face. finally having made his choice of flower, he picks up the vase. “he sounds like a-”

he pauses, looking at the kind of flowers in the vase. his… his favorite.

“how’d i do?” wei wuxian asks, bouncing on his toes. almost nervously. “did i get it right? those are your favorites, right?”

lwj slowly turns towards wwx. his confusion must be apparent on his face, bc wwx bursts out laughing.

“lan zhan, lan zhan, it’s you!” wwx says, the biggest smile on his face. “the one i like is you!”

frozen in place, lwj doesn’t know what to say. wwx likes him. wwx /likes him/.

“is- is that okay?” wwx asks, his smile faltering.

“yes.” lwj breathes, rushing around the counter and grabbing wwx’s waist. he looks him dead in the eyes, trying to convey all his emotions. “yes, i like you too. so much, i like you too.”

wwx flings his arms around lwj’s neck, says, “good.”

then he kisses him.

What would Xue Yang be in a modern AU? Easy answers that came immediately to mind are things like tattoo artist, sweets shop owner/employee, hitman for hire... but I love it when people come up with scenarios you wouldn’t expect, like maybe a librarian who also just happens to have the dark arts section memorized inside and out... or the delinquent-looking college kid who actually has the highest grades and perhaps works on the side at the local florist’s, animal shelter, or Bath & Body Works. (He may or may not agree to candy bribes in exchange for being your tutor.)

Least favorite character? Jin GuangShan, dude’s just a huge dick. Or Chang Cian (the man who lied to young Xue Yang and ran over his pinky finger).

Happiest moment? Jin ZiXuan and Jiang YanLi being happily married and the proud parents of Jin Ling... that blessed one month period...
