Bruno Redondo, I love your art, but I canNOT for the life of me get into Devin Grayson’s Nightwing.

That last anon made me curious, do you have any favorite eras/stories with Nightwing in it? Obviously doesn’t have to be a NW solo run. I was thinking within the DC continuity in general (if that makes sense).

if we’re asking just generally, most of the comics that I prefer are where nightwing are more decentered and often the support/mentor of the story. Like when he becomes Batman in Batman and Robin or he comes back to gotham to bond with new robins. These are all one shots that fall into dixon’s nightwing, I think. Probably, idk. There’s that specific art style of the era where he looked kinda ugly.

Most of my favorites are early nightwing/disco wing. My reading preferences tend to be on the goofy comics side.

Off the top of my head, I was recommended Batman prodigal by an anon here. I liked the dynamic between Tim and Dick and it was a good entry for someone who didn’t really know Tim that well before this. When they did laundry together, it was really nice. I like that mundane closed off world stuff. I do like it more than Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin (I know. Tomato, tomato, tomato. Damian traitor🍅🍅🍅).

I think my other favorite ones are the two stories of Dick riding on top of trains. Dick not only rode on top of trains once, but twice. Each time with a different robin. It should be under Nightwing but I don’t remember the numbers of the issue.

I did like the era of shot in the leg dick (Nightwing vol 2, ~108) because he found a family outside of the bats and dealing with not being nightwing anymore. Then the story fell off…. many such cases. I’m not a big romance reader despite (waves) everything. Especially if they choose to throw brainless love interests at nightwing for plot. I’ve become some kind of single life activist for him. I don’t want romance!

The first time I’ve ever created my own loop. The sparks I felt coming from my hands, my wings being in flames, seeing the world spin around me as I floated in the air. The wind whipping around me and then it all stopped. It paused, time paused for me. I looked around the once powerful waves of the Wales ocean, now still as a stone. And once I set my pocket watch back, everything went back to motion. The loop was inside of the already created 1940 loop in Cairnholm, and it spanned a few feet wide, it wasn’t much, but it was my first loop. The intense feelings of pride and excitement and exhilaration flowed through my veins like nothing else. That was the moment I felt how truly powerful I was

I promised myself to never tell this to Emma, but once Abe left, Miss P would ask me to go outside the loop to check in on him at different points of his life. No normal ever saw me, as normals see me as a mourning Dove while peculiar folk see me in my white-phoenix form. I was there when Abe got married, when Franklin and Susan were born, I watched them grow up. I remember how disappointed Abe was that they weren’t peculiar, but he loved them greatly. I would report back to Miss P after every visit, she loved him as her own son and it made her happy to know he was safe and had his own family. it was years later that I went back to check in on Abe, as Miss P decided it was time to stop meddling and let him move on. But now, I left on my own reasons. I had gone to visit Abe give him hell about not answering Emma’s letters, because the week before I came to visit she had a full mental breakdown because of some shit Enoch said about Abe leaving her behind. She begged me to check in on him and to find any form of consolation. But when I got to Florida, it was 7-year old Jacob who answered the door. I was stunned, I could basically see the peculiarness fuming off of him. I introduced myself as a relative to Abe’s neighbor as to not cause suspicion. I ended up giving Abe hell later that day after hanging out with Jacob for a bit. when I got back to Cairnholm, I couldn’t allow myself to tell Emma about Jacob, after I told Emma about Abe getting married and having kids, she wouldn’t speak for months. Now if she knew he had a grandkid, I couldn’t let that happen again. It would be only until Jacob got to Cairnholm that she found out, and thankfully it went well.

3. 🍊

Of course I’m going to say the hidden part of the beach at Cairnholm. We’ve spend endless hours there, it is our go to place for every hang out, date, or party. We walk the beach twice every day, we go swimming, we practice our peculiarities without worrying there would be normals. It is our sanctuary, where we can be us, and not be confined in the house. We can breathe as we run through the thick forestry to get out to the cold waters.

I’m gonna break my silence and let out an unpopular opinion: I love Neil’s mom 😔

Let’s me explain myself before the court🧎

I’m very much aware that Mary was not at all a good mother to Neil and was also abusive to him. Obviously not to the extent that Nathan was, but abusive to Neil nonetheless. I’m not trying to defend her on that or pretend she never hit him or made him avoid a lot of things such as intimacy. I, for one, strongly believe that watering down what she did would be an injustice to her character. 

With that disclaimer out of the way. You know the trope of Mothers surrounding or giving up her life to protect her kid? For the sake of this discussion let’s call it the Mother’s Sacrifice trope because there isn’t an official name for it. So  - when it comes to Mary I absolutely LOVE how she could fall under this trope but her character twists it in a sinister direction.

Usually the Mother’s Sacrifice trope treats moms as these guardian angel type figures for their children. The embodiment of moral goodness. Often depicting them as this perfect ideal of what a mother should be with our MC (who in most cases is or later becomes an orphan) mourning the loss of her. Whose love for the MC was strong, selfless, and unconditional. At times the MC would even meet people on their journey who were close to her. These people being a ‘gift’ from her from the beyond so-to-say to love the MC in her place.

Having that in mind - a common misconception I see aftg fans have with Mary’s character is that she never loved Neil and actually hated him. With the support being that Mary was abusive to Neil and never affectionate towards him. I will say that these two points are true. But by explaining Mary’s abusiveness to Neil by her just hating him I feel like would be a disservice to not only her but to Neil’s as well.

If she hadn’t loved Neil she wouldn’t have risked her life to run away with him, come up with rules for him to make sure he lives a long (but miserable) life, or die protecting him. We as readers would have never even reached the beginning of the main story of aftg otherwise. And no offense to Aaron, but I doubt Tilda (another example of an abusive mother in aftg) would ever go to such lengths for him. The issue isn’t that Mary didn’t love Neil. She did. It’s the way she loved him that was wrong. The way that she didn’t bother to give that affection to him. The way she deemed it unimportant, unnecessary, useless to his survival. And it’s because her love for him was arguably selfish. Not selfless like how a mother’s love should be. 

When the two were still living with Nathan Mary didn’t seem to take much action in protecting Neil from Nathan’s abuse. Only seeming to advise her son on how to best avoid or placate his father’s wrath (to some this could be a form of protection albeit a very weak one). It’s only when the possibility of him being taken away, whether through death or by being sold off to the Moriyamas, does she flee with him.

This, again, leads back to the idea that her love for Neil is the selfish kind. Mary can deal with her son being hurt. Does she prefer it? No, but she can deal with it so long as he’s with her (perhaps because of the way she was raised in her mob family?). Her son being separated from her, taken away from her, stolen from her though? No. She cannot handle that. She will not allow that to happen (there’s another interpretation that could be made of her character that I also really like. That she - like many others at some point in the story - views Neil as her property. An extension of herself that she got out of her marriage and one Nathan had no right to give away. Which could also explain her pridefulness of not asking her family for help).

Reminder: the only time Neil remembers seeing his mother be remotely happy was when he was playing exy. It being “[t]he only times he'd ever seen his mother smile” (The Foxhole Court). 

All through the series we get paragraphs of Neil feeling the most free while playing exy, away from all of his sufferings. So I don’t think it’s a coincidence that that’s when Mary was described at her most content.

Abuse can be extremely complicated is what I’m getting at and not always as clear cut as some people would like it to be.

With the Mother’s Sacrifice trope the MC thinks about their mother during their low points to comfort themselves, or use her as a baseline to make a vital decision. After her death Neil does mourn/think about Mary. But unlike it being painted in a bittersweet light like the trope usually does; there’s this under layer of self-deprecation when Neil thinks about his mother. Most likely as a result of Mary being very critical of him to the point of beating him when he got something “wrong” while they were on the run. After her death Neil believing that he’ll never be as strong as her, that she wouldn’t approve of his decisions, that he won’t last long without her, etc.

Ironically, there are moments where Neil does “positively” think about her. Such as how she’d deals with enemies and how to withstand pain in order to survive his time at the Nest. Including many instances of Neil wishing he’d inherited more traits from her (…but this could also be due to not wanting to be anything like his dad). Later on Neil would even meet his Uncle Stuart who, without a doubt, DOES love him… but that’s because he’s Mary’s kid. His only connection to his deceased sister. And in Mary’s place Stuart will do anything to protect Neil. This goes back to some of the ‘positive’ aspects of the  Mother’s Sacrifice trope. With all of the negative teachings Mary forced onto Neil, there are some that do help him survive. Once again twisting the Mother’s Sacrifice trope in a way that it was never meant to be.

Mary was a vicious woman who loved (or her version of it), protected, and abused her son all at the same time.

To end this ramble off, in one of Nora’s now deleted extras (which may or may not be canon anymore); she mentions Neil having a conversation with Bee before Aaron’s trial on how he would’ve chosen the Foxes over his mother if she was alive. This makes him feel guilty. Bee responds by saying that although Mary would’ve likely been furious with Neil for breaking all of her rules, she would’ve eventually gotten over it because he came out of the whole ordeal alive. And that’s all she ever wanted for him. Mary wouldn’t blame Neil for choosing the Foxes over her.

Is Bee right in her assessment of Mary? Maybe, maybe not. Bee never met the woman so how can we know? Neil’s mom is dead so he can never ask her but there’s enough room for it to be true that it comforts him.

………that said I think we can all collectively agree that Andrew definitely would’ve tried killing Mary if he ever met her lmao

I always love reading people’s metas and noticed she isn’t discussed often on her own, only when Neil’s character is the focus and it’s to explain his negative tendencies (which is fair lmao. Mary was a horrible mother in the grand scheme of things).

Was re reading the shit-show of Laurent’s relationship with Auguste in Duty of Princes and examining how selfish Auguste’s love for Laurent could be at times, and then I saw you upload your first chapter of Paper Crowns, which then led me to thinking about Mary and Neil, which then led me to do a deep-dive of their relationship, to me sharing it here with you today haha

Mary is another interesting character in a sea of interesting characters. I’ve only read through the series twice (as opposed to…idk probably a dozen rereads of Capri, simply because I’ve known it longer) so I’m sure I need to reread again- but for me it again boils down to wondering what life was like pre-running.

It occurred to me somewhat recently that some (by no means ALL) of Neil’s scars are from run-ins with Nathan after their escape. Yes, Nathan was an abusive piece of shit and left scars before, but it was probably more violence-in-the-heat-of-the-moment tantrums than dedicated family torture sessions it seemed to have become later. I get the impression their last close call was not the only one.

So my question is, how much of Mary’s abuse was there before they ran?

I assume Nathan was an abusive husband before Neil came around. Did Mary resent the pregnancy? Did she try to end it and was forced to carry to term, only to reluctantly feel affection and love for her son? I can imagine her being a kind of detached figure in Neil’s life before it’s time for him to “audition” for the Moriyamas and she realizes that she can’t let it happen. By no means was she ever loving or affectionate prior to their running, I think, but I wonder how much of her own abuse was from stress and fear and protectiveness post-escape and not something that was there prior?

It was a bold way to start a conversation, he’d give Tim that.

“That right,” Jason said, skeptical. He pinched the phone between his ear and shoulder while he laced a boot. “Mind refreshing my memory on how I incurred this particular debt?”

“I convinced Bruce one of his batarangs ricocheted into that nitro, remember? And blew up the evidence incriminating you in that drug ring case?”

Jason chuckled. “Just for the record, I sold them one batch, and it was strategic planning that Bruce went and screwed all to hell.”

The screen still showed an active call. Jason put it back to his ear.

A prolonged moment later, Tim came back on mid-throat clearing. “’Kay. So anyway.”

“Did you just put me on hold?”

“So anyway,” Tim repeated. “You know the soup you made? The one you put with the grilled cheeses?”

“Tomato,” Jason supplied. Then, pointedly, “the one I showed you how to make.”

“…Yeah.” Tim cleared his throat again. Another pause. “Actually. On second thought—”

The tap and silence happened without warning this time.

“The hell,” Jason muttered, checking the screen twice to make sure the call hadn’t ended. He got up and pulled his keys off the hook, hovering by his apartment door while he put the call on speaker and pulled up his tracker app. Tim’s dot was at the Manor with Damian’s, which wasn’t that reassuring considering the conversation they’d had last week about fooling trackers.

“…Still there?”

“Are you dying?” Jason demanded. “Because if you are and you didn’t lead with that—”

“I’m fine,” Tim said, sounding not fine. “In fact, I changed my—“

Another tap and silence, but this time the sound came back a half second later to loud coughing. Tim gasped and hacked some more.

By the time he groaned wearily and came back to the microphone, Jason was halfway to the ground floor.

“Your services… are no longer required,” Tim said roughly.

“The hell they aren’t,” Jason said. “You sound like shit.”

Another, comprehending, pause. “Oh. Huh.”

Jason sighed. “I’m coming over.”

“Everybody’s gone,” Tim said, defeated. “I’m supposed to be watching Damian and doing food this one night. And…”

Mounting his bike, Jason paused to listen.

“I have all the stuff,” Tim mumbled. “It’s the only thing that sounds edible. And I tried, I just… stared at a tomato for like, forty-five minutes, and then accidentally napped, and—” He stifled a cough. “Damian can eat cereal. I’m going to bed. Don’t come.“

“Tim,” Jason said. “I meant it when I said to call if you need something.”

What are your thoughts about sasuke last words to naruto, when he takes back his headband. Sometimes people, maybe us included are upset about the ugly finale, but indeed this is the real end, the rest is an epilogue a ugly one. But the real end is this one, sasuke last words and thoughts for Naruto

ONE WORD ON EPISODE 479/CHAPTER 699 : FINALITY

Even on my First Watch.... I just couldn't see anything left to tell in this Story. Well, Probably how Naruto became an Hokage is the only thing left but considering his Age... It's all Okay. I felt complete, hopeful and totally satisfied with every plotline. (Except 1 or 2)

It should've ended here.

What came after was something that's purely for Next Gen series and though I was disappointed initially, I just got over it and still we are getting solid contents whereas those pairing fodders became non-existent. When I look in that aspect, I am relieved. LOL. Not Sorry at all.

Anyway, So How I felt about those beautiful last 3 pages???

First off, this sentence in this panel from Sasuke looked pretty distant without any feelings at all... It just irked me a lot....

I mean Why wouldn’t Naruto come to say Farewell??? If that Sakura could come to see him off, Why not Naruto??? Why is this strangeness????

So, I decided to check with the Japanese Raws and see the truth for myself.... Because deep down I was hoping for something else.... And you know what? I was 100% right.... LOL.... I finally got what I wanted. 

The real translation is.... 

お前は見送りには来ないと思ったが Omae wa miokuri ni wa konai to omottaga I thought you wouldn't come to see me off

You may think “What’s so different between both the sentences? It’s all the same”

Well, on the surface, Yes.... They are the same.... But not really..... There is a nuance...

“I thought you wouldn’t come to see me off” denotes Sasuke gave a careful thought about Naruto’s farewell, “Will he come or he won’t?”.... and for some reason he decided that he won’t come.... There is clearly an Expectation and a Thought Process about Naruto was involved. 

Whereas in

“I didn’t think you’d come to see me off” denotes Sasuke never really thought about Naruto at all.... He felt Naruto’s arrival was just out of the Blue.... There is no expectation but it’s all a Surprise. 

For me... The Corrected Sentence gives me a sense of Closeness because you won’t be expecting something from a Stranger, would you??? Whereas the Original sentence gave me a sense of Distance because why would S be surprised by N’s arrival???

So, This is the right one after checking with a Japanese Native in Reddit and some Translator Apps... 

After this,

This is one of the best panels that sums up their Bond.... A Culmination of all the things that had happened so far between them.

They started to fight in VoTE1 and they ended their conflict in VoTE2. Between both the battles, many things happened. 

One such thing is,

Naruto never gave up on Sasuke.... He constantly chased Sasuke to save him from the Dark path he was about to walk even if it means getting himself hurt.

And every time Sasuke asks, “Why are you going so far for me??”.... Naruto replied, “I am your Friend”.... 

Meaning, Every time Sasuke ventures into the darkness, Naruto reciprocates the existence of their Bond and Sasuke’s heart was opening up slowly.... That’s the essence of “You came closer to my heart all the time”...

And another thing is...

“It’s just, whenever I see you carrying that burden and going on about everything the way you do... Somehow, I just hurt... Exceedingly pained, that I just can’t leave you alone!!”

So, whenever Sasuke was seems to suffering with his Burden.... Naruto was also feeling immense pain.

This is what happened between VoTE1 and VoTE2. 

“We were measly little things who used to quibble and fight.... But now we can share pain in each other’s Hearts...”

This means, After all those fights, we can finally able to understand, love, forgive and feel the pain in each other’s heart..... And this is just between the two of us.... 

In this Panel, Sasuke was revealing his dreams.... 

“All those times I travelled around the world, I realized that there are so many conflicts and hatred.... So, why not let’s just apply the same feelings we just had between us (love, understanding, forgiveness and feeling pain) to the bigger things???”

Bigger things, here, represents all those Nations that came together during the War... Well, Hashirama & Madara united their clans and that became Konoha... But still there were so many bitterness inside the Village that lasted for almost 80+ years.... 

Similarly, Just now all the 5 Villages came together for the first time.... It’s unity is still fragile and budding... It will take lot of efforts for all the Villages to understand each other and prevent further wars between them. 

This is the Bigger thing, Sasuke was talking about.... And that’s why Konoha symbol was focused on the right most Panel. Meaning, Sasuke wants all the villages to come to an understanding with Konoha and Viceversa.

“But there are not many people like you (Naruto).... Not everyone can desperately try to understand the other person without giving up.... And even if they do, the results won’t end in a smoother way... Just like us... (He is referring to their lost arms)... And if we are going to apply these feelings to the Bigger things, it will only get difficult”

And that brings us to the final page....

“It’s a feeling similar to a prayer... To keep enduring until it can be done, no matter what... Those who have been entrusted with that hope.... That’s us...”

“By carrying all those feelings we had between each other... Let’s pursue our new dream.... And apply those feelings to our dream as well... I pray this will come true some day... And until that day comes, we must keep enduring no matter what... Because we are the people that were entrusted with this job full of Hope....”

This ‘entrusted job’ refers to all those Hokages who left the living realm in Naruto and Sasuke’s hands to take care of the rest...

And that brings us to the last panel...

“Perhaps that’s what makes us Ninjas...”

And that’s the perfect Ending we get from this Chapter.... 

And this Special Hitai Ate goes way back to VoTE1 where it was dedicated with 4 Panels...

That symbol represents his Home and that slash represents the Bond he had with Naruto.... He abandoned both in VoTE1....

And after he met Naruto Under the Bridge, Sasuke specifically mentions “I want to destroy Naruto with my full power!! That’s the only way to reject everything he stands for!!!”

Naruto represents the Bond he has with Sasuke and Konoha, a place where they were born, grew up, developed their Bond and had memories together. Sasuke could reject the Bond and Konoha only if he can kill Naruto... 

And in the End, He received that Hitai Ate as a sign of accepting his Home and their Bond.... Something he abandoned after the battle in VoTE1.

Naruto and Sasuke carries a New Dream and wanted to achieve it together by enduring whatever it takes... By spreading Love, Understanding, Forgiveness and Feeling the Pain... Which is the foundation of their Beautiful Bond....

(little update on the fic for all those interested, i have nearly 3k of the first chapter done as of now so im going to guess ill have it posted within the next 2-3 days)

Anyways, this is for @kalenythekalenko who wanted to know some of my headcanons, so here's a few I've come up with since the beginning of infatuation with the movie 🤗 (+ some of my explanations/reasoning for them)

1) For some odd reason, the new bloods really take to Ajax upon joining and they end up following him around. This pisses him off as well as inflates his ego a bit to the point that he's not really sure if he hates or likes it.

I actually have no clue as to where this one came from, he just seems like the kind of guy a bunch of naïve new members would see and be like "hes so fuckin cool i want to be him"

I however do not think he's that cool, boo ajax boo 🍅🍅

2) Swan and Cowboy are really good friends

So i actually have a Swan and Cowboy bffs agenda? When watching the movie i notice how they kind just... End up near each other? Also the part after the fight with the Furies when Swan helps Cowboy up. Then there's afterwards when Cowboy and Snow want to go back for Ajax and Swan doesn't react to it until after Cowboy gives his reasoning (this one might actually be me looking a little too far into it). And then during the fight with the Punks when Cowboy takes out the Punk attacking Swan.

This feeling about their friendship was amplified when I played the game and during the backstory mission and realized that they had left the Destroyers together, stuck together while not associated with a gang, and then Swan would only join the Warriors if Cowboy would be able to as well.

(in a similar vein to this, I think Snow and Swan are also pretty good friends because Swan made Snow his main liutenant in the Jailbreak comic and I feel like some sort of camaraderie would've had to be apparent in order for that decision to be made.)

3) This one might be a little silly, but it did come to me at midnight a few days ago, but basically-- I feel like Cleon's the type of guy to just call people by their full names whenever addressing them.

Okay so I do have some sort of basis for this one. Whenever I read the original script + watched the deleted scenes I saw how Snow was originally Snowball and I just related Cleon addressing Snow in the one deleted scene to him calling everyone by full names. (I do wish they called him Snowball once or twice in the movie though I would've adored that)

4) okay so i dont know if this counts as a headcanon but i did decide to basically give personalities and names and stuff to characters from the Gladiators and Red Hook Shooters (two gangs that definitely exist but literally have nothing about them-- besides where theyre based and some of the Gladiators having canon appearances since they briefly show up in the beginning of the movie), but that's a whole long thing to put in here so just know I'm going to put this information to use in my fic (more shameless self promotion 😔)

Alright, I'm pretty sure those are the only things I can think of right now, of course with time I'll probably remember/think of some more and I'll share those too!

He is stubbened with winning or having advance place in everything-whatever dueltaining or chasing love and is hard to change his mind.

Be hard to find what is his true himself because he focuses too much on others.

So he is envoy to other Yu-boys, and want to be more energized one, but when he really do that, he will very shameful.

Yugo->Yuya: He looks similar to me and always knows that what the true fun is, and I like him!

Yugo->Yuto: He is too serious though, he frownes eyebrows and seldom relaxed-but tearing his cover, he is a nice guy just gentle to everyone he liked! He is the only one who care me by deeper way, and we are becoming each other slowly, and I like him!

Yugo->Yuri: I hate him by most time-he just hate to not annoying and teasing me by worst ways! ! !But when he is doing himself and empty, I have no reason to convince he is not beautiful.

Other side of Yugo:

He will stubbened with all the things he has good memories with, and can't help staying with them over and over.

His mind will suddenly blank for a while, for remembering his bad memories, and comes back like nothing happened.

Sometime he loses all emotion and acts like robot, he just blank himself by working, and bring some unreasonable quiet to others, let them worry about him.

He is sensible and realism in bottom of heart, and sometime he think future negatively. Need to filled with care and give his loved some intellegent advises.

Yuri->Yuya: Much stronger than me, he is god of mine and no one can convince! Everything of him always have no reason to not followed! I will do anything to love him-but I still have will to beat him up and look his feared face.

Yuri->Yuto: The one who can playing chess for a long time with me. It's hilarious for me to have any similarities with you! But if you dare to save me, come on and show how powerful you are! You're the only one who has brain cell and it's meaningful to have a long talk with you-or just stay together silently.

Yuri->Yugo: Weaker banana. It was dumb of me who be forced by Zarc, and want to forge with such a idiot who didn't listen to me. But when I found the one who never be controled is more valuable, I found new world and try to look at banana what things I will learn.

Other side of Yuri:

He is most EMO Yu-boy, and sucks at trauma by most childish ways very often.

Actually it's burning him to think better ways to troll others, and most time he just stay with his plants and books, and other thing looks like not be fit on boy.

Sometime, he becomes nice and let everybody smoth him, it let others aware and doubt what bad thing he will do, but Yuri just want to be a lovely fluffy cat which is kind.

I had to do some research because I didn’t remember many student x teacher fics, so here’s what I got from my SasuSaku lists:

Student x Teacher AU 🍅🌸

a lesson in romantics by @uchiharvno​ 

He cursed the way his heart stuttered in his chest whenever he saw her and he hated how impatient he got when she’s not in the room. Surely, he wasn’t so foolish as to fall in love with a woman who was 1) four years his senior, 2) still in love with his brother, and most importantly, 3) his own teacher. - [Rated M, on going, updated yesterday!]

I think I couldn’t start this rec list without mentioning this story first. A lesson in romantics was the first fic portraying the student/teacher trope that I read. I fell in love with the dynamics of Sasuke and Sakura here (the background is the cutest!). This story will surprise you from the start and it will be hard to put it down! Love it so much ❤️

It’s a little sad (be warned!) however the end is heartwarming, specially the message. ❤️
