Did you think I could ever give up Dwarf Fortress?
Welcome back to So, This Happened, my Kobold Fortress travelogue! Dwarf Fortress updated to take Steam screenshots, and I have dozens of them I have completely not been uploading with the wild and wacky stories of my Kobold Fortresses.
In fact, here we have a farewell post. This particular fort I used for two experiments. One I am highlighting with these screenshots. Well into the game, I decided to move my fortress out from underground and build an actual castle! I had thoughts about adding turrets and other expansions.
Alas, that did not happen. Experienced players will be looking at this screenshot and going "HOLY CRUD LOOK AT HOW UNHAPPY YOUR POPULATION IS."
So, uh, yeah. This happened. See, first, I really should have built the roof FIRST. Dwarves (and thus kobolds) really, really hate the surface. They hate being rained on more than ANYTHING. By the time I realized my mistake and rushed a roof, I had 45 angry 'bolds in my population. I went on a huge exiling spree and got that down to controllable levels.
Then I got declared the capitol and the King arrived.
I always name the ruler of my fortress Nerissa after a friend. I do not like some weirdo showing up demanding a better bedroom than Princess Nerissa. I commit regicide to deal with this issue every time.
So, you know, when I do that, two things happen. The crown gets passed down along a devious chain of inheritance to someone who is not a resident of my fortress. That person immediately sets out to visit (but not live here). Second, when my fortress becomes the capitol, it gets mobs of visitors that are the royal court. Nobles of various ranks.
*I* thought, hey, Nerissa rules the wealthiest and most powerful fortress in this kingdom, because Toady seems to be in no hurry to fix the weird game balance mistake that food is worth 100 times as much as anything else you can make. She has to be high up on the royal succession list, right? So what if I keep killing kings until she inherits? I've always wanted to try that, and this fortress I did!
DO NOT TRY THIS.
First, and most importantly, it doesn't work. The rules of inheritance are byzantine indeed, and your princess will not inherit the throne. My best understanding is that before territory ruling nobles, important court functionaries inherit, and those roles will be automatically filled by non-resident historical figures. No matter how many kings you murder, some random schmuck will be inserted into the line of succession right in front of your fortress ruler.
Second, it turns out that kobolds really don't like seeing you murder their king. Even if you do it out in the wilds before they reach the fortress and nobody but your soldiers witness the murder. Even if their king simply vanishes for mysterious (coughcoughbridgetrapatomizedthemcoughcough) reasons. My fortress stress levels reached an uncontrollable level.
So, I finished construction, and I am retiring this beautiful castle to start something new. Maybe I'll try nagas! Everybody likes nagas, right? Nagas are COOL.

Saudi Arabia's ambitious zero emissions plan: is it even possible?
Saudi Arabia’s ambitious zero emissions plan: is it even possible?
The future progression of civilization seems to be on a quite linear path, or at least quite literally a linear city in Northwest Saudi Arabia with claims that it will run on one hundred percent renewable energy. NEOM, as the city is called, was unveiled in 2017 by the Saudi royal family as part of the Vision 2030 reform plan to help add diversity to the Saudi economy away from oil. This…

Forest City: China Built a $100bn City in Malaysia... and No One Lives T...
China takes a strong stance against anything financial, as that what parasites do.
China has nothing to invest their money in, while having the same fun with inflation we do.
Only thing they have to invest in is housing.  Most of their owned housing are not even finished, as finished apartments share the feng shui of the previous tenants.  So, they buy the apartment, and live with their parents.  Because China going to China.
Crash the local real estate bubble.  What do you do now?  Build one in Malaysia.
Hoes does Winnie-the-Pooh react, you ask?  Limiting China citizens to $50,000 per year in foreign investments.  Because they have to prevent the Chinese from having the illusion they have a way to protect their family from Chinese financial bullshit.

So, This Happened... Farewell Tour Edition!
My desire to play Dwarf Fortress runs in waves, and I think this one has waned.  Surely I shall return to this game, but my travelogue is likely to disappear for awhile.
So... obviously, you deserve a farewell tour of my Kobold Kastle!  Floor by floor, I tried to capture it for those who like to see how other people lay out their fort.  Everything but the farms is above ground!  Every floor of the residential tower is the same, so I only got a good photo of one.  I will extend it as high as I need to.
I do wish to call attention to the surface crops farm, which is one of the absolute first things I make in any fortress.  I dig down one level, then cover it over in flooring.  This is crucial to my strategy in all fortresses.  I get vast, reliable amounts of food in rich variety.  Or at least a rich variety of flour.  I grow nothing for direct cooking or eating.  I brew it, mill it, process it, or pulp it.
Also, my kobolds do not greet you by burping magma.  The only game balance mod I use removes aquifers, which annoy me.  Kobold Fortress operates just like dwarves.
They’ll be back, but who knows when?  Enjoy the rare sight of a SURFACE fortress!

"Construction projects can sometimes raise questions about whether they’re really necessary, but that’s not the case here. This historic structure simply has to make way for a new and improved version."
- Fred Mills, on the new Grimsel Dam in Switzerland, B1M
Context: The existing dam was built in the 1930s, and is responsible for a massive portion of the Swiss electrical grid, but has been developing a crack that cannot be safely fixed, and so a new dam needs to be built.
(This video is also what had me jokingly calling him 'the David Attenborough of Cement'.)

Reconstruction of ‘The Gabba’ ahead of the 2032 summer Olympics
Tumblr media
You know ‘The Gabba’ from the end of the “Cricket” episode. It’s going to undergo significant renovations to add capacity and transit connectivity improvements ahead of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032.
How significant? Demolished and completely rebuilt!
“It will be a well-connected stadium, but most importantly, it will trigger the urban renewal that we want to see ... it will be one of the best parts of the city to live in.”

the thing i find crazy about a lot of these construction megaprojects is that, besides acting as a personal Versailles for whatever egocentric politician is demanding the thing be made at the expense of the people, some of them have a secondary purpose as a tourism spot. now, i don't travel abroad all that much (.... ever. never left canada in my life), on account of plane tickets to and from a tiny ass island in the atlantic being expensive as hell, my personality being too neurotic to imagine international travel would be fun, and a preference for smaller locations that are not exactly megaproject hotspots. But i don't think, if i was booking a trip somewhere, i'd want to go somewhere that the general consensus among the locals is 'the existence of this building brings us great misery, money was pulled from pensions and education and infrastructure to make it, it is the vanity project of a cruel leader.' i don't know, i'd feel no good going somewhere like that, especially for my own leisure. If your mega-expensive city, or building, or district is made half from marble and half from human suffering, why are you trying to advertise it to bolster your tourism industry???? Is that where you think people really wanna go????
