sometimes i see people say we still don't understand decarabian/they wish we had more info on his personality and like. y'all are letting his lack of a character design trip you up! if anything he's the old mond character we understand the BEST! and the reason we do largely comes down to andrius/lupus boreas.

mr boreas is a self-proclaimed Hater™ of humanity - and yet, when he decides this about himself, he literally kills himself to preserve a better future for them. his body dissolving into the land is one of the main reasons mond is as pleasant as it is today! he adopts human babies whenever he has the chance! he manifests a ghost form whenever traveler asks just so they can beat him up!

meanwhile decarabian is out here convinced he loves humanity sooo much, oppressively micromanaging them to keep them safe, even taking a human lover, but he refuses to LISTEN to what they actually want and need even when his divorce papers are mailed to him via arrow to the chest. L bozo!!!

boreas is bluntly honest to the point of borderline cruelty (telling razor he isn't one of them and never will be, ouch). decarabian sinks himself deeper and deeper into his own lies so he doesn't have to confront that his grand dream of his perfect city is just that, a dream. a delusional fantasy. (you don't ban rebellious music if you had genuinely no idea your people wanted to rebel).

they're foils, your honor. if you don't know what decarabian would do in X scenario? figure out what boreas would and then work backwards.

just throwing out a message of appreciation , because i see you around all the time , reblogging all sorts of stuff from the community , tagging it with such sweet and positive things , often giving your own thoughtful and creative input too . i love seeing you in my own notifications of course , but more so this is just gratitude for the general pillar you are to the FR space in my eyes .

There were individuals hanging out by the lake, carefree, unaware or perhaps in denial of the possibilities that could come.

"I don't believe we should be speculating, I apologize. But this feels different than from any encounter we have witnessed, even Penacony. I have faith that Phainon will do what's needed, but.. what will happen after?"

Part of him can't help but feel thankful that Dan Heng initiated this particular conversation. From his own perspective, from attaining a touch of divinity, to the way time made him see the frame of this World that almost feels pervasive, a bitter feeling found itself being nurtured within his chest despite every supposed triumph they seized. Caelus found himself poised in the opposite position, leaning his head back over the railing, both of his elbows stationed as support while bringing his attention towards this False Sky.

"If we didn't Dan Heng, I think we'd not only be ignoring the elephant in the room, but getting ourselves stuck in this-- same, timeless bullshit." His words were sharp and by no means in an unpleasant way. It was an embodiment of comfort due to his friend's presence, and how looking through this realm by Oronyx's hand (and Fuli by extension) gives perspective to an inherent wrongness to it all.

"Lets think about to other Titan incarnates across different Eras. The fact each and every era requires a new generation of them taking the helm? A World wipe and Restart? Doesn't that kind of edge to the thought that-- Things may be getting fucked up no differently now?"

He couldn't ignore the stab of disbelief drawn into his own gut due to saying that. To see the work of so many Heirs, their sacrifices, how many friends they've come to make and lose upon this tale, only for this possibility to look the most realistic to him? Gems of hope are being gleaned and collected, each and every generation slowly being tilled to a possible breakthrough, one thing however just doesn't change.

"If I keep lookin' at it from this damn far above." He begins, slowly bringing up a hand, as if seizing some unknown precipice. "It all feels like I'm just some starbound god, being too damn logical on the whole thing." That thought in itself made a frustrated exhale puff from his nostrils.

Impulsivity prompted him to lean up from his delinquent like perch, stretching up his arms as if to feebly attempt throwing away those damning thoughts. It didn't work, but at least felt nice to make his body stop feeling as stiff. He'd soon pivot upon a heel, facing towards Dan Heng as a serious light brough a glow to the Nameless' eyes. "I want to be honest then. If we're not finding a way to put that Black Tide down for the count, then we're just going to repeat history. We haven't found a damn thing on how to actually take the fight to it."

"--And whoever else may be siding with it." The following words were drawn more softly, secretly.

"If the Path of Erudition finds itself stationed here, don't you think that mean there's some core logic or soul at the epicenter of all this?"

at the start of oshi no ko they tell you that the entertainment industry is one that runs on lies, and that for those who work in the industry, a lie is the best weapon which they can use to protect themselves with.

each arc of the story covers characters realising this in their own time. akane faces criticism which only worsens when she tries to be her genuine self — she is only saved later through (among other things) yuki's keeping up appearances. ruby too, comes to the spotlight as a celebrity when she begins to presents an idol persona that is different from her real self. even mem-cho admits that lying about her age is what has allowed her to become popular.

the biggest example of “lies” being a way to protect themselves is probably arima kana. her experience of going from a deeply-loved child celebrity to someone who is abandoned by not just a public but also her own mother, transforms her into someone who constantly hides herself to please those around her. by her own admission too, she never says things she genuinely means. her sharp tongue as at 17-18 isn't because she thinks she's better than others — it is because she must guard her heart and save herself the agony of being abandoned again.

i forgot where i intended to go with this but the appeal of oshi no ko is the heartbreaking picture of youth that it presents. of course it is a critique of the idol industry whose marketing tactic is pandering parasocial relationships, but in centering adolescents rather than grown adult idols, it also presents a look into the youthful desire to find a place to belong and be accepted and the growing pains of realising how society is often engineered to only accept those who are NOT themselves.

A few words that have nothing to do with the fic I just posted, but I want to say them anyway.  This has been a hell of a year for just about everyone.  @ninefoxgambitgame posted about general state of affairs on tumblr, and I’m also on tumblr with all the baggage that comes with.  Having moved to a communist dictatorship 12 years ago, there’s not a lot I can do for the people back home.  So I try to focus on what I can do.

Recently, because I inhale books or video games at unhealthy rates when I’m super down, I’ve been checking out ebooks from libby, sticking with queer and/or non-white writers because if the Orange is going to be shitty to both libraries and anyone not white and male with a ton of money, I might as well support where I can.  China does not make it easy to transfer money home for books (because when has the communist dictatorship made anything easy?  I’m here for the food, health care, and the lack of school shootings, not because China makes bureaucracy easy), so my library card is my best option with this. 

Which is where I came across Machineries of Empire and went insane over terrible and delightful characters, including one canon ace character who is not the Worst, but only because there’s a character who built all of modern technology based around ritual torture, so the bar is really kinda low on that.  And I love Shuos Mikodez (and everyone else, ngl.  There are so many blorbos in these books, which is why I keep telling some of you guys to read them!) so much.  It’s so very rare I get really real canon ace characters, and when we do get them, they’re usually in genres I’ve not enjoyed.  So having the head of assassins and spies in a space opera with tons of other queer characters be asexual was wonderful.  

I’ve not been writing, because the State of Affairs is just awful all around, and the fact I’ve only got two weeks before finals is Good (I love my students but they are very, very needy at finals time), because I’m spiraling pretty badly recently when it’s been a chore to even force myself to eat the delicious food I love here.  But I loved these books, loved your other books, refuse to clear my holds, no thank you libby, on ones that are out of print because I enjoy them.  

I wrote a fic for Mikodez and didn’t have the mental energy to edit, so I left it for a while, but after seeing your post I just wanted to say, yeah, same.  But you inspired me to pick up my pen again despite all that, so thank you.  Thank you for the asexual character, all the queer characters, and nonbinary characters you’ve written. I’ve enjoyed them immensely and I’m not ready to jump back into my massive WIP despite being at one of the first climaxes and nearly done (if nearly done means... a lot more, but fuck, I do long denouements, and yes I sometimes hate myself for that), but your books brought me a step closer.  So thank you very much for writing them, even if I’ve only recently stumbled upon them.  There’s a lot I can’t do, but I can tell you that reading about Cheris and Jedao made me more than a little mental and I love them and I've really enjoyed your other series as well. I hope good changes come your way, even though they may be far off, but I'm an incorrigible optimist when I force myself to be.

Anyway, this has rambled on well past when I should be sleeping, so before it becomes 2 am and I stop making any kind of sense, I'll end it here.
