Mickey 7 vs Mickey 17 review
*spoiler free*

Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton 4.5/5
Wow! What a fun ride. Was this book groundbreaking? Not at all. Did I enjoy just about every second? 100%
I haven’t found a sci-fi author who hits the same as Andy Weir but Edward Ashton got pretty dang close. I love the concept of the expendable as a job for a colony exploring new parts of space/a new planet. Having a sort of fail safe guy who can do the most dangerous parts of just about any job without having to train someone new when they die? An employers dream. This book felt like a perfect sci-fi middle ground of the real horrors humans would face in space while also having dark comic relief (my personally favorite), plus aliens…who doesn’t love aliens. I was pleasantly surprised that the book explored the sort of emotional turmoil of being an expendable not only just in the day to day but also when faced with another version of yourself, literally.

Mickey 17 the movie 3/5
Going into the showing I genuinely thought I was going to like the movie more than the book. Mickey 7 felt like a book that even if they changed a bunch of stuff I wouldn’t be that mad about it., plus I’m already a big fan of Bong Joon Ho and his work. They had made the decision to up the amount of Mickeys from 7 to 17 which means he would die more, with that in mind I was expecting more action and excitement but honestly the movie was… the opposite. It felt monotone and very flat. There was also the choice to completely change a fairly prominent character’s personality from a traditional military general type to a love child of Trump and Elon Musk. I love Mark Ruffalo but the impression got very old very quickly for me. The movie also rushed through this sort of suspense of oh no are we going to get found out? which was a major point of tension and excitement in the book. Overall I felt like the movie was fine but definitely disappointing. I wasn’t disappointed because it changed parts of the book but just for how almost bland the story felt in comparison.

In the book, the differences between Mickey7 and Mickey8 are implied to come from the 6 weeks prior to the start of the story when Mickey7 wasn't uploading. When Mickey8 was introduced, I kept thinking "Are we going to know what happened during those 6 weeks?" I read it more that these daily experiences add up and cause tweaks to a person over time. I'm sure if you met yourself from 6 weeks ago, it would be jarring.
The movie, I think, attributes the differences between Mickey17 and Mickey18 to innate differences between individuals. The book also mentions some of this, but it was much more pronounced in the movie. Technically Mickey is the same person every time he is printed out, but someone's personality isn't so easy to perfectly replicate. Mickey17 and Mickey18 have such obvious differences because they are each individuals and no matter how much control you have over the process, there are still going to be variations.

the movie didn’t explore the memory issues involved in the expendable process which is a shame. I think
#Mickey doesn’t even remember one of his lives because they Mickey refused to upload. saving the others from having the memory#of a terrible death. and also probably mostly as an act of deviance#this life is MINE and MINE alone. I’m going to do what I have to do and then face the whole universe with my bare face. what now#they didn’t really mention the fact that Mickey has to be told by others how he died unless he was hooked up to the uploader as he died#like during the medical trials. which means he needs to have a lot of trust in his friends. because if he hadn’t uploaded in a week? two?#a month? two months? well he wouldn’t remember whole parts of his life#a fact that spoiler alert his friend exploits knowingly#it’s an interesting component of the process#but I think the book in general was more interested in the specifics of the process#mostly because it’s basically “wouldn’t it be fucked up if“ as a novel#but it would have been cool to see the movie explore that too#Mickey 17#Mickey 7#Mickey posting

Also not to gossip but multiple editors tried to convince Ed to remove the clone threesome element from mickey7. He stood firm in his convictions and thank god he did 🫡

I find it funny that in the movie it’s Timo that came up with the macaron idea and screwed them over and put Mickey’s name on the loans vs in the book it’s Mickey who bets against his friend winning, loses the bet, and continues getting with loans from Darius Blank until he’s basically fucked so it’s just his own fault in the book lmao

It's not very detailed in the movie but in Mickey 7 you learn that Mickey is the first person to ever ask to become an Expandable (he doesn't have a choice, because he doesn't want to die because of his debts). Normally, Expandables are criminals that are being picked for the job, they don't want it, no one does, because they know what it means and what it implies (deaths, suffering, psychological damage, etc).
So when Mickey says to people that he volunteered, no one believes him, and people think he's a criminal haha
