I was so impressed w the results of my wallpaper designs that I created more on the 2nd floor. On the right, I created the master bedroom w/ a Craftsman-style theme. The bed was made of strip wood & Houseworks' porch balusters. The bedside tables were made from scrap wood & topped by free samples of marble patterned vinyl tile. The green chair, its side table, & the chest of drawers survived my daughter's early play. I repainted the chest & embellished its hardware w copper metallic paint. The prints on the wall were cut out of Papa's stash of old architectural magazines. I created the magazines beside the green chair in Corel & printed them on my b&w lazer printer.

On the left, I created 2 rooms: a dressing room & a bath divided by a foamcore wall. The vanity was another survivor piece but the stool was made from scratch. The lamps were made from kits by Miss Betty & Associates. The bath fixtures were made from a cheap kit by Scientific American but I added the marble patterned tile to the sink. I have a small bag of sea shells that were collected at the beach when I was a child & used them to create a decorative theme for the room. I created the "stained glass window" by printin out the design in B&W then colored it in w/ felt-tip markers. The towel stand was made from scratch & the towels were ut from an old baby wash cloth. The light fixtures over the sink have non-replaceable bulbs so when one burnt out there was no way to replace it w/o destroying the room.

I made the doll seated at the vanity from scratch. Her body is pipe cleaners & cotton balls. I sculpted her head out of clay baked in a toaster oven then painted & coiffed it. It's supposed to be ME! On the 1st floor, you'll see the dolls I made to represent my Papa & Mama!

[I was 46 when I had to move back in w them & the three of us enjoyed the relationship we could have had when I was a teenager but we were all too immature then to fully appreciate each other. This period of healing was a blessing that still comforts me. Mama died from cancer in 1997.]

ETA: The rugs on the floors are simply color laser prints I made in Corel & got printed w/ the wallpapers.

Down a heavily shaded trail Teddy located what he thought to be a Penstemon Miniatus which had found a patch of sun big enough to allow it to grow and flower. Upon seeing it he decided to go ahead and lay back for a quick break. Even though he had just started walking, when you find the right thing to look at, it’s never too early to take a pause.

I papered the kitchen w a Mary Englebright pattern I loved. The stove was a Chrysnbyn plastic kit. [Not shown because it needs to be glued back together.] I build the ice chest & cabinets from scratch. I am particularly proud of the ice box. The lid lifts & the door is held in place by a teeny tiny handle.

Pearl's had a bin of loose Housework's porch posts for a dime each & that decided the décor in the living room. The shelves & cabinets were fitted around the posts & made from strip wood & cardboard. The lamps at the back windows were fashioned out of decorative glass beads & had parchment lampshades before the mice ate them.

The blue empire sofa was one of the more expensive items S & I collected. The bentwood rocker was another survivor piece. The rug was needlepointed by Mama. The two little easy chairs were made from cardboard, cotton balls, & covered by fabric scraps. The green table lamp was given to S by her grandmother & originally non-working. I made it work by inserting a "grain of wheat" bulb into it.

The one piece in the living room of which I am the most proud is a replica of a Gustav Stickley desk. I only had a b&w photo to go by & think I made it a bit too shallow but, otherwise, I put a great deal of effort into the pigeon holes & working drawers. I also designed & printed out the stationary & made tiny envelopes & even stamps! The desk chair is a survivor.

The last remnant in the stash of surviving objects included 2 German-made dolls, which had been greatly abused. I used oil-based retouching paints, which Papa just happened to have, to re-paint their faces & transformed them as nearly as I could into replicas of Mama & Papa in Victorian garb.

When I presented my work, Mama asked, "But, where are you?" That's when I made the doll of myself. So there we are: Papa tending the fire, Mama busy in the kitchen, and myself forever vainly adjusting my coif.

Range: the Colombian Andes, as well as a bit into Ecuador and Venezuela

Habitat: montane, cloud, and elfin forest, especially the latter when near the treeline; elevation from 1800-3400m, typically above 2400m

Subspecies: 2* (a noticeable plumage difference may one day mark these as two separate species)

Range: in montane regions from northern Mexico down to central Bolivia, with populations also found to the east in Venezuela and Guyana

Habitat: montane and submontane forests, with varying preferences depending on the region- evergreen or pine-evergreen in Central America, wet highland in Costa Rica and Panama, humid forests throughout the Andes in South America, and tepuis in southern Venezuela; elevation 700-3000m, depending on the region

Subspecies: 12, with varying levels of coloration differences in the belly
