I know I’m a little late for Christmas in July and too early for regular Christmas but with this heat maybe a winter story isn’t such a bad idea?
Imagine that Bucky after having been under control for the longest time is free, and starts to get reacquainted with who he used to be, and when he remembers that he used to love Christmas, he’s like a little kid again, especially when it comes to presents!
Hope you enjoy!!
Warning: fluff fluff and more fluff and some white fluff lol
Christmas Miracle
“Come onnnnnnnn!” he whines.
“No! I’m not telling you what I got you for Christmas! It’s a surprise!” you state, not wanting to ruin it.
“Can I just have a tinsy, tiny little hint?” he asks.
“Ok fine! One little hint!” you give in.
“Yay!!” he exclaims, looking like a five year old who just got their way, instead of the almost hundred and seven year old that he really was.
You hated to admit it, but as much as he could annoy you, you loved him dearly.
Bucky was your best friend, and had been since the moment you guys ran into each other at a coffee shop, which ended up with his coffee being knocked to the ground.
His current squeal of excitement brought you back to reality.
“Your hint is it’s something you can use every single day!” you say, sitting back onto the couch.
His brows furrowed in concentration.
“Socks?! Clare, I swear if you got me socks… “He trails off, causing you to smirk.
“No, it’s not socks, and before you even ask again, no other hints. Christmas is only three days away. I’m sure you can hold out until then.” you start.
He throws himself down on the couch beside you, crossing his arms as a pout graces his bottom lip.
You poke his side, attempting to make him giggle, because he’s ticklish there.
“No!” Bucky sulks, further into the couch.
“Oh ok then.” you say as you start to get up.
You turn to look back at him, offering out your hand.
“Do you want to go get some snacks and watch a marathon of Christmas movies?” you inquire.
He thinks for a moment and then looks like he wants to say no, but all of a sudden you see this hint of a smirk.
“What kind of snacks?” he inquires, his interest genuinely piqued.
“Well, I was thinking of making some chocolate chip cookies and brownies for everyone, and a special batch for us while we watch the movies. Maybe some eggnog as well, or even peppermint white cocoa?” you list off.
“Ok, deal, as long as I can lick the spoon for the brownies after?” he says, his smirk now into a full blown cheeky grin.
“Deal!” you say, as he reaches up and takes your hand.
Out of everyone in the compound, you got the closest to Bucky.
You’re not even sure how it happened to be honest. One day, you’re helping the Avengers with a special mission, and the next, they offer you a position with them, and you started spending more time at the tower.
You met Bucky a few weeks later at the coffee shop, and as messy as that went, you didn’t think things were so bad, well when you thought that you’d never see him again, that was.
It wasn’t until you were all seated in the meeting room, waiting for Tony to give the details about the next mission, when Bucky came walking in.
You looked up, and there he stood looking at you, with a scowl on his face.
“What is she doing here?”Bucky growls out.
“Ah Tin Man! I see you’ve already met Clare?!” he says, earning a deeper scowl from Bucky.
“Yes. We have!” he grounds out between clenched teeth.
He sat down on the opposite side of you, staring at you throughout the rest of the meeting.
Once the meeting was over, you rushed out the door to try and find him.
You found him on the balcony, looking out at the city, as the sun started to set.
You didn’t know how it was possible for him to look more attractive than what you thought at the coffee shop, but it was there in front of you.
You clear your throat, as he turns around and looks at you, contempt written all over his face.
You start to speak but he cuts you off.
“Look, I just want you to stay away from me. I’m not good to be around, Everyone sees me as a monster, so you may as well too!” he says, before turning back around to watch the city again.
You were at a loss.
Yeah you know about his past as the Winter Soldier, as you did research on him after the coffee incident, but you didn’t think it defined who he really was.
So you plucked up the courage, and walked further towards him, resting your arms on the railing, not saying anything but looking out as well.
From the side, you can tell he’s looking at you.
Bewilderment is now visible across his face.
“Didn’t you just hear what I said?” he asks, expecting an answer.
So you give him one.
“Yes, I heard you!” you start. “But I don’t believe in people being monsters. I believe people, everyone, is subject to fate and ill timing. I believe in there being injustices in the world, and I believe that you’ve faced the biggest injustice of all!” you finish, licking your bottom lip as you do.
“And why do you think that, Princess?” he asks, almost afraid of the answer.
“Because you were forced, no, manipulated, into doing things that were beyond your control, and in turn, the world has branded you as a monster, when you are clearly a man looking to find his place in the world again, that is no longer the same one he left all those years ago. You are now forced to carry a label that was never really meant for you. That’s why I think you’ve faced the biggest injustice of all.” you say, giving your head a nod, starting to turn to go back inside.
All of a sudden you feel the coolness of his metal hand against the skin of your wrist.
“Clare, wait!?” he says.
You turn around to look at him.
“Thank you!” he starts, emotion thick in his throat.
“Other than Steve, no one has had that much faith in me since I’ve been back. And I still get a lot of looks from people when I walk down the street.” he whispers, hanging his head low.
You reached over and took hold of his hand, his eyes nervously looking back at you, waiting for you to realize this was all a bad mistake.
But it never came. You simply looked up at him and smiled.
“It’s a good thing I’m quite different from any and everyone else.” you say.
The longer your hand stayed on his, the more you could feel the emotions swirling through you.
That was the day you started growing closer.
That was five years ago now, and Bucky was the closest thing to family for you.
“Hey! Earth to Clare?” Bucky says, snapping his fingers in front of your face, causing you to blink before remembering where you are.
“Did you take a trip without me? Did you start on the good brownies without sharing with me?” he leaned close, whispering it, so no one else could hear if there were “special brownies”.
“Haha, no, I was just thinking, that’s all.” you tell him.
Without waiting for further explanations, he tugs your hand, leading you to the kitchen, your laugh ringing off the walls.
A few hours later, you take the last tray of cookies out and set them on the counter to cool off.
That’s when you look around the kitchen and stifle a giggle.
There Bucky stood, licking the whisk from the brownies, batter all over his lips.
He suddenly looks up, feeling like he’s being watched, and looks at you.
“What?” he asks.
Covering your mouth to keep from laughing, you walk over to the sink, wet a paper towel, then go over to him.
He puts the whisk down, and looks back at you.
“You’ve got a little something on your face there, soldier boy!” as you lift up the wet paper towel.
You start getting all the chocolate off of his cheeks, as he looks down at you.
He can’t help but notice the glint in your eyes as you were wiping at his face.
Up until that moment, Bucky was stuck on an idea for a gift for you, but now he knew what to get you.
After having made what he felt was an awful first impression with you, he thought he would never get the chance to try and win you over, especially how he behaved.
What he never expected though, was that as time moved on, and you guys became closer, that he would develop feelings for you.
You’ve been there for him in the darkest moments, when the nightmares threatened to become reality once more.
You didn’t give up on him when they managed to turn him back into the Winter Soldier, and you came to Wakanda with him while the programming was removed.
He’d been pretty naive to not notice his feelings for you before then, but lately, he did everything he could to spend more time with you.
Shaking the thoughts clear from his mind, you were standing in front of him waving to get his attention.
“Now who took a trip?” you giggle.
That was it! You saw the gleam in Bucky’s eyes and knew he was about to do something, so you tried to turn and run away.
He wrapped both arms around you, lifted you up and put you over his shoulder like you weighed nothing.
As you're giggling, you try and wiggle out of his grasp, and he smacks your ass not too hard, but enough that you cease doing what you were doing as a jolt of electricity traveled through your body.
“We’ve got movies to watch!” he says, starting to head for the common room.
“Ooooo, wait!” you say.
He stops and you grab the plates of cookies and brownies.
“Ok, continue!” you say with another giggle.
When you get to the common room, he gently puts you down so you don’t spill the plates, and you both cuddle up on the couch, a big fuzzy blanket thrown over both of your laps, as you put your feet on Bucky’s lap, each of you getting comfortable for the night.
~The next day…
Bucky had gone out to get a bit of last minute things that he needed, so it left you back at the compound to wrap gifts.
As you finish up most of the gifts, placing them under the tree for everyone, you sit with Bucky’s gift in front of you, still needing to be wrapped.
You had found a lot of old pictures of Bucky from before the war and during.
You had created a scrapbook of these photos, but made sure that the book had a lot more room left in it.
You look to the box on the left and picked it up.
Inside the box was a brand new camera, that is a hybrid, meaning it can take both film and digital photos.
You felt that after everything that he’d been through with trying to piece his life back together, he could use the camera as a way to see things through a different perspective, and the book to document it.
Putting both the box containing the camera and the scrapbook into a bigger box, you wrapped it up.
This gift however you put right at the back of the tree, as you planned on sharing with Bucky at midnight, when it was just the two of you.
You had just finished in time, as the moment you stepped away from the tree to sit back down, Bucky came in with a bunch of bags and a grumpy looking Sam behind him.
You nod to Sam. “What’s bird man’s problem?” you ask.
Bucky instantly has a huge smile on his face.
“He wanted a picture with Santa, and they told him he was too big!” he says, doubling over to hold onto his stomach.
“Very funny Barnes!” Sam grumbles. “I’m going to go find Loki. See if he can shape shift into Santa so I can get my picture!” he says, skulking off.
You chuckle as you go to help him with his bags.
He suddenly freezes, and moves the bags away from you.
“Er, I’m just going to go put these in my room! I’ll be back!” he says, dashing down the hall, before you could say anything.
You just shake your head and wander over to the chair by the fireplace.
Pulling a blanket over you, you curl up to watch the snow that had started to fall on the busy city.
You must have dozed off, because the next thing you know, it’s dark, except for the fire and the lights on the Christmas tree.
You look at the time on your phone, eleven forty-five.
Bucky is supposed to meet you down here in fifteen minutes.
Meanwhile, while you had been napping, Bucky had managed to get all the gifts he got wrapped, with the exception of yours.
There in a long velvet box, lay a necklace and earring set. The pendant had two strands that intertwined until both ends come to a point holding a beautiful tear drop sapphire. One strand was encrusted with diamonds while the other was plain white gold. The earrings matched the necklace to a T.
He chose that as your gift because he wanted tonight to be special, but also because the blue would go well with your eyes.
Looking at the time, he noticed he had about half an hour left before he was to meet you down by the tree.
Wrapping up your gift, he grabbed all the others and headed down to the common room.
As he enters, he sees that you are curled up in the chair facing the windows.
He quietly puts all the other gifts into the pile, noticing that it’s grown considerably over the day.
Taking a seat on the chair opposite from you, and pokes at the fire, adding another log on to keep it going.
Once he’s satisfied that it’s going to take, he sits back and admires you while you sleep.
Fifteen minutes go by and you start to stir.
He watches as you stretch and look around the room, your eyes trying to adjust to the dim lighting.
As you start to look over to the fire, you notice Bucky sitting across from you.
You jump a bit, causing Bucky to chuckle.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you. You looked peaceful. If you weren’t going to wake up, I was prepared to take you up to your room and tuck you in.” he says softly, shifting a slight bit at the thought of the image going on through his head when he said that.
“It’s ok, I just didn’t expect to drift off.” you say.
“Do you want to make some cocoa before we do the gift exchange?” he asks.
“Sure, I’ll go make some.” you say as you stand up and stretch, your shirt rising up a bit, causing Bucky to moan a bit, hoping you didn’t hear him.
You then walk to the kitchen, pouring milk into a pan, bringing it and some sugar to a boil before adding in white chocolate chunks, letting it melt before taking it off the stove.
You pour the contents into two mugs, top off with whip cream, candy cane bits and a bit of chocolate powder to finish it off.
Grabbing the two mugs, you walk back to the common room.
You hand Bucky his mug and he inhales deeply.
“Peppermint?” he asks.
You nod just as you go to take a sip of yours.
Unfortunately you didn’t realize you had whip cream on the tip of your nose, but Bucky sees it, and sets down his cup, then reaches over to get the cream off the tip of your nose.
You blush, hoping the excuse of the fireplace can be passed off.
That man made your heart race, as if it was in the Boston Marathon.
He was too good of a friend, and you hated the thought of taking a chance, and him not reciprocating back on the feelings, and it ends up ruining the one good thing you have going for you.
He simply smiled at you and continued drinking.
“So are you excited to finally know what your gift is?” you ask him.
His eyes light up, as his grin gets so huge.
“Yes!” he says, practically screaming it.
You laugh, and set your mug down.
Standing up, you walk over to behind the Christmas tree, and grab a fairly decent size box and bring it over to your chair.
Taking the hint, Bucky gets up and goes to grab your gift, coming back and sitting down in the chair.
Looking at the time on your phone, you see that it is now just after midnight, and officially Christmas.
You hand out the gift for Bucky to take, and he hands out yours.
“Remember, we open them on the count of 3. Ready? 1….” you start.
“2…. “ he continues.
“3!!!!!” you both say together, digging into the paper.
You hear him gasp as he’s opened up the box to the camera. You can’t help but chuckle at his reaction, unwrapping your gift.
You gasp when you open the box. The firelight hits the stones in just the right way, making them sparkle.
“Clare!” you hear Bucky exclaim.
You look up and he’s opening the scrapbook and looking at all the pictures.
“This is too much!” you both say in unison.
Taking a moment to explain your reasoning for the gift, Bucky’s eyes start to tear up.
“I will use this every day!” he states.
Wiping away a tear, you take a deep breath. “I told you, that you would!” you managed, sounding cheeky as ever.
Now it’s Bucky’s turn to explain his gift.
As he’s telling you the reason why he got it, it’s starting to dawn on you, what he’s trying to say.
You put your gift on the side table and stand up, Bucky doing the same, closing the distance between the two of you.
He gently reaches up, cupping your cheek with his right hand, tracing your cheekbone with his thumb.
Before anything can be said or done, soft Christmas carols are being played, but you don’t pay attention.
There is only Bucky and you in the room, and nothing else matters.
Bucky leans down, and gently presses his lips to yours, as your breath hitches in your throat.
As he slowly starts to pull away, you can feel his breath on your lips.
“I guess what I’m also trying to say is, I really like you Clare. You’ve always been there for me, and you’ve never treated me any different to anyone else. When we talk, you listen, and you take a genuine interest in what I have to say. You aren’t afraid of me, and you make me feel like myself again. Your gift shows how I can remember who I was, and not be ashamed, but that I can forge ahead and make something more of myself. The only thing is, I can’t do that without you being there by my side. I’m stronger when I’m with you, then without you.” he starts, grabbing your hand in his left one, thumb absentmindedly rubbing your knuckles.
“Will you be my girlfriend?” he asks, not realizing that he’s holding his breath.
You nod once, before you burst out giggling and wrapping your arms around his neck repeating yes over and over, tears streaming down your cheeks.
He pulls you back, making sure he heard you right, letting out the breath he’d been holding.
“Is that a yes?” he asks you, wanting to make absolute certain.
“Yes!” you say wrapping both arms around his neck, pulling him down for a kiss.
After a while, you both come up for air.
You both go to sit in a chair, Bucky sitting first and then you in his lap.
The fire burns low, as you both wrap a blanket around you, watching the snow continue to fall.
“This is by far the best Christmas I can ever remember!” Bucky says.
“It’s definitely my favorite as well.” you agree, snuggling up against him.
Hearts content, you both drift off to sleep in the chair, knowing you both got your Christmas miracle that you didn’t know you needed.

I'm gonna start easing into the Thanksgiving holiday by considering the simplest traditions that followed us into adulthood and adultier adulthood. No meaning. Just shows and movies we watch because it's this time of year.
For example, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I always think of the movie around Thanksgiving but Kimmer refuses to watch it. So I just remember that over-the-top scene at the car rental counter where Steve Martin goes stark raving mad...
Which usually does the trick. 🤨
There's the Back to the Future trilogy. Also a viewing tradition this time of year although we don't always manage it. So it's more of an aspirational tradition.
Another aspirational tradition would be the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade depending on how it's streaming. This is more of a Kimmer tradition than mine but it's a lovely one. Sometimes we actually sit down to watch the parade and sometimes it just provides that exciting Thanksgiving Day vibe to our place while we prepare for the day.
Pieces of April with Katie Holmes, Patricia Clarkson, and Oliver Platt, yes... absolutely. I'm pretty sure we do manage to watch this one every year.
Miracle on 34th Street, of course. And, depending on which one we watch first, the original or the modern remake, we watch the other one shortly after.
A Christmas Story. Also of course. Ever since TBS (or TNT?) started running 24 hour marathons of the movie back to back to back to back a long, looooong time ago either on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday, I always thought of it as mostly a Black Friday movie.
Then there are the five Wonder Years Christmas episodes: "Christmas", "A Very Cutlip Christmas", "Christmas Party", "Let Nothing You Dismay", and the bonus New Year's episode "New Years". Not that they're anything close to Thanksgiving shows. This is just the earliest opportunity to watch these masterpieces.
And finally, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and The Mayflower Voyagers for a touch of the meaning of Thanksgiving as well as the history of Thanksgiving.
Okay so yeah. That's it for now. Just dipping my toe into the complexity and variation and logistics of this holiday we've always celebrated. And since during the course of our lives we celebrated in sometimes wildly different ways, it's nice to consider some of the easy traditions that followed us over the years.
🙂

A Christmas Carol (1984)
Tumblr media
There are many adaptations of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol to choose from for your Holiday Christmas marathon. Many consider this 1984 version by Clive Donner the one to go with. If you ask me, no Christmas season is complete without viewing either Alastair Sim or George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge.
Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott) is a bitter miser who considers the ideals and spirit of Christmas pure humbug. He hesitates to give his underpaid assistant Bob Cratchit (David Warner) the day off and scoffs at his nephew Fred (Roger Rees) when he suggests a holiday dinner. One cold Christmas Eve, the ghost of Scrooge's former partner Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay) appears to him with a warning "You will soon be visited by three spirits, heed their counsel and change your ways or risk an eternity of suffering."
Though originally made for television, this is a top-notch production. The locations/sets transport you to 1843 London like a Ghost of Christmas Past and the costumes all look authentic. The stage is set and George C. Scott is perfect for his role. One look at the actor and you can practically see every time he's rolled his eyes at the concept of charity. He delivers the over-the-top dialogue like it was written for him but Scott also grounds the story in reality. It makes the drama that follows that much more powerful. Scrooge is a miserable, horrible person… but he’s still a person. His journey through the many Christmases the ghosts take him through rouses intense emotions.
So much of what makes this story endure is the message. Christmas is a joyous time, but it can be scary under certain lights. That uniformly white blanket over everything, the bare branches swaying in the frigid wind, the shortening days, the cold… the idea of ghosts emerging from the darkness just fits. These fears are juxtaposed by this renewed hope of salvation, the explosion of generosity and the potential for miracles. A Christmas Carol taps into all of those sentiments. There are talks of gifts but no commercialism. It’s about the importance of relationships with loved ones and what you must do to keep them close to you. That's not to say any adaptation is a hit; the cast and the production's dedication make this a special rendition of the timeless story.
There’s only one flaw with the film: the portrayal of the Spirit of Christmas Past by Angela Pleasence. It isn’t her performance; it’s that unless you know what the movie is trying to do, she'll leave you scratching your head. She’s supposed to be candle-like: a light that could easily be put out (which is why we see Scrooge extinguish her with his cap). You can't tell unless you already know. Otherwise, everything you want to see in this story is there. The comedy of a miser so cheap he won’t even spend money to keep himself comfortable, the drama over lost love and seeing a heart grow cold, the warmth of redemption and the horror of the ghosts. As a child, I distinctly remember seeing the Ghost of Christmas Present (Edward Woodward) showing off Scrooge’s “children” to him and finding it terrifying.
It’s easy to become bitter around Christmas. Even if you don’t feel like the true meaning of the holiday has eroded, there’s so much pressure and so many high expectations that are rarely met. 1984's A Christmas Carol is the perfect remedy for any bitter sentiments. Whether you see yourself as Ebenezer Scrooge and need to be shown the error of your ways or you’re his nephew and need your faith in others renewed, this is the movie for you. Its final scene always brings tears to my eyes. (December 14, 2020)

What holiday traditions do you think R + M would do together? (i.e., Christmas movie marathon, baking, etc.)
This is such a cute ask! Let's say RM live in New York while SS have stayed put in Rhode Island (though Sum wants to move to Manhattan). Both couples usually travel to Newport for Chrismukkah but Julie and Kirsten are both sick so everyone's staying put. Usually Sandy and Kirsten host festivities at their house where ugly sweaters are required, complete with cookie decorating (and eating), a movie marathon consisting of Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, and some Hallmark for good measure. They also light their menorah, which Seth says they only ever light once or twice and not nine like they're supposed to. They usually tell him to stuff it, Sum the most of course.
But I think in the weeks leading to Chrismukkah, Marissa loves making pies. She starts with pumpkin and pecan for Thanksgiving and moves on to lattice apple before attempting a meringue for a chocolate pie closer to Christmas. Ryan takes it all in stride, rushing to the store at 9pm on nights she runs out of ingredients, and brings slices to his co-workers. He always gets her something from Tiffany for Christmas but it's not always jewelry so he's always trying to top it every year (Sum helps).
Christmas day starts by watching Breakfast at Tiffany's in bed ("I'd marry you for your money in a minute" they used to watch this together before they actually did get married), walking their dog in Central Park with hot chocolate that Ryan's started perfecting, eating grilled cheeses and tomato soup for lunch (another Ryan creation), watching The Holiday (Marissa finds Jude Law AND Cameron Diaz hot), having sex, and eating a braised roast for dinner complete with Marissa's mac and cheese. Marissa acquiesces about watching Die Hard after dinner (she says it's not a Christmas movie, Ryan says it is; and they watched Tiffany's so who is she to say what's appropriate on Christmas!). As for gifts, Ryan gave Marissa her Tiffany teapot in the morning and Marissa gave Ryan a really old and UK-exclusive Journey vinyl as well as an engraved watch (it marks the day they met in 2003). In the weeks leading up to Chrismukkah, Marissa dropped a bunch of hints about wanting a really bougie stroller for their dog when she walks around the city. Their dog is a toy poodle named Buttons they're both obsessed with but Ryan wants a dog he can run with. So they agreed Marissa would get the stroller and they'd start looking around shelters in the days after Christmas for a big rescue dog.

Christmas movies you recommend I’m just curious cause I need some
Here’s a list of my favorite Christmas movies!
Home Alone 1 and 2 / The Grinch (all versions are great, cartoon, Jim Carey, new animation) / Charlie Brown Christmas / The Family Stone / The Polar Express / Jingle All the Way (the nostalgia for me) / Miracle on 34th Street / Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (a kid favorite) / A Christmas Story (my dads fave)
These are movies I pretty much watch every year, if I can. I also recommend Harry Potter movie marathons for the holidays!

We are currently watching the first of our holiday movie marathon...Home for the Holidays. Amusingly years ago Jodie Foster, who directed the film, told me she thought people forgot it, because no one talks about it. I told her it doesn't feel like the holidays without us watching it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She thanked me for telling her that. After Home for the Holidays we are going to watch Nothing Like the Holidays, which is in essence the Latino Home for the Holidays. Then it will be Miracle on 34th Street.
Tomorrow will be A Christmas Story and A Christmas Story Christmas... I love the holidays...

🎄 ITS HOLLY JOLLY TIME BEECH 🎄
Cold, hoodie, and zero degrees for the winter asks ☃️
🔔💪🔔SOMETHING'S BOUT TO BE DECKED AND IT AINT THE HALLS 🔔💪🔔
Cold - what is the best movie marathon?
if it has to be the same franchise, all the Santa Clause movies with Tim Allen (pls stop after the third), but if there just has to be a consistent theme, I really like the old Christmas movies: holiday inn, miracle on 54th street, it's a wonderful life, white christmas (white christmas especially because the singing and dancing is just top notch!)
Hoodie - do you prefer hoodies or sweaters?
sweaters! hoodies have that zip up that sits weird over my boobs
Zero Degrees - what’s the coldest weather you’ve ever experienced?
as someone who lived in vermont (one of those itty bitty states at the top right) for four years, this is one i actually have to think about. I wasn't out in it, but i woke up one morning and it was like -10F (or -23.3 C). fun fact, your nose hairs can actually freeze!
thank you for asking my BIGGEST LOVE!
Get into the spirit of the season with this winter ask game!

Giraffe's Eye View | The Ten Commandments (1956) REVIEW
Hello there people of today and robots of tomorrow! It is I, Clark, exhausted after four months of Holiday preparations. Between getting ready for Halloween and Christmas can take a lot out of a guy, especially for someone as meticulous and festive as I am. Sure, I could take the time to actually relax and rest, but there are cookies to bake, presents to wrap, and monsters to expel from my house, spam it! Especially werewolves, those hairy douchebags track their hair all over the place whenever they don't floor-scoot. Along with all that comes the annual movie marathons. For September and October it's non-stop monster movies like Little Shop of Horrors, the 90s Scooby-Doo saga, and the classic Universal Monsters. You haven't lived until you see a six-foot fishman try to woo a human woman. Gillman was robbed! Meanwhile, November and December brings forth festive flicks like Miracle on 34th Street, Hogfather, Batman Returns, and The Star Wars Holiday Special. The world won't know peace until everyone hears Carrie Fisher high off her ass giving lyrics to John William's iconic score. Disney, stop cowardly denying the world this amazing milestone of television!
That said, it also denies me the chance to watch anything new that's coming out around the time, resulting in my pile of things to watch backing up. As such, the first few weeks of January are designated as Binge Week, a time for me to catch up on anything I've missed. Since I've a massive windbag with a blog, why not share my thoughts on what I'm watching with all you weirdos? With no further ado, let's begin our binging with the movies.
Tumblr media
This first video was gifted to me by my friend Alec in the form of his old VHS copy. For all you young wiper-snappers out there wondering what the heck a VHS is, I pity you. You'll never know the satisfaction of rewinding a tape. Netflix has robbed you of that joy! Then again it's also robbed you of having to stop the movie halfway through to put in the next tape or setting up your VCR to work with your modern day television, something I had to do to watch the cinematic classic The Ten Commandments (1956). That was a biblical effort on par with parting the Red Sea. Well, maybe not, but it was certainly a pain in my spotted butt! Complaining aside, what did I think of the picture overall?
It starts with a short, old man appearing behind a set of lavish curtains to speak directly to the audience. Hoo boy, I've seen Frankenstein, I know where this is going! Is he going to warn us about the frights that await us? Actually no, he says this picture depicts the birth of freedom, our more accurately the story of Moses, played iconically by Charlton Heston. No doubt this was helping him prepare for Planet of the Apes, for trying to escape the wrath of the Egyptians turns out to be equally as exhausting. It doesn't help this his brother Ramses (Yul Brynner) is Pharaoh. Eesh, talk about your family squabbles.
Really, is there any point to me recapping the plot? Hebrew kid gets sent up the river in a basket, gets adopted by the Royal family, finds out he's Hebrew, sees a vision of a burning bush, returns to Egypt to free the slaves, yadda yadda yadda. Why repeat all of this when chances are you all know this story thanks to its cartoon counterpart, The Prince of Egypt. Comparing and contrasting the two would prove just as pointless, both having released over four decades apart from each other, both telling their stories in different mediums, and both being impressive showcases of what Hollywood was capable of at the time. Both are equally epic, but when all's said and done I prefer Prince of Egypt. Why? Let me count the ways!
Firstly, there's the aforementioned personal turmoil between Moses and Ramses. As apposed to his somewhat sympathetic two-dimensional doppelganger, Brynner's interpretation of the character is a bastard and a half, a two-headed snake that ends up eating his own tail. Not to say this is necessarily bad. After all, why feel any pity for an Egyptian monarch who is pro-slavery? Especially when Yul delivers a powerful performance that rivals Heston's, crafting one of cinema's greatest scoundrels. It's because the fractured brotherly relationship between Val Kilmer's Moses and Ralph Fiennes's Ramses is more interesting and impactful. Seeing how much the two cared about each other before Moses is sent back by God makes what happens next so much more of a gut-punch.
Speaking of emotional gut punches, there's the songs. I know this especially isn't fair considering this movie was never meant to be a musical, but all during the opening scene I kept hearing this in my head:
youtube
More accurately the Jonathan Young and Caleb Hyles cover, but you get my point.
Which brings me to my third point; the length. This film is almost four fours long, nearly rivaling Zack Snyder's Justice League runtime minus all the unnecessary slow-mo. For crying out loud, the opening includes an introduction by the film's director Cecil B. DeMille, then a quote from old scripture, followed by the Pharoh plotting to slaughter all the Hebrew firstborns, only then cutting to Moses's birth mother sending him away in a desperate bid to save his life. All of that eats up a good chunk of the movie's runtime, as apposed to the short but effective musical number DreamWorks made. I mean, do we really need to see the Pharoh's logic behind butchering a bunch of babies? The act is freak'n messed up regardless!
That said, the film at least uses its lengthy runtime wisely. We get plenty of development for Moses's adoptive mother Bithiah (Nina Foch), his treacherous ex-lover and wife of Ramses Nefertiti (Anne Baxter), more time to see what agony the Hebrews are living with under the Egyptian rule, all good stuff. Still, the movie could've cut out the last few scenes, such as God's writing of the commandments while everyone at the base of the mountain throws the world's first kegger. Really, the commandments barely played a role now and they'll continue to do so immediately after they're introduced, so why even bother? It's almost like Shang Chi and the Ten Rings, naming your movie after a magical maguffin that's just barely explained. The only difference being the rings are at least used throughout their movie!
All that said, The Ten Commandments more than earns it's spot as a gold standard of film. The acting if wonderful, the writing is witty, and the sets are a sight to behold. According to Alec, this was made back when Hollywood felt threatened by television, resulting in lavish backdrops like this that couldn't be replicated on a small screen or budget. Wow have times changed. Now we have equally detailed and lengthy movies on streaming services like HBO Max, now with the ability to pause so we can actually go the bathroom without waiting for an intermission. Trust me folks, you're gonna wanna pee before you commit to this movie. Otherwise the Parting of the Red Sea will be torturous for you. Otherwise, I say check this movie out, it's a masterpiece of biblical proportions.
Circling back to the subject of Rings though, this brings me to the other VHS my friend sent me...

Blu Christmas Holiday Movie Asplosion 2022! ⛄ Chapter 48: Miracle on 34th Street 🦌 Another undisputed classic, this is one of those ones that for any number of people is their number one (of course, every one of these is probably someone's number one, but this is probably a great many peoples'). As mentioned earlier in the marathon, I enjoyed the remake, but the original is leagues better. It's one of the best examples of sentimentalism through a film, without relying on being too overly sweet and saccharine to sustain it. And Edmund Gwenn is a superb Santa Claus. One of the best I've seen. Also, fun bit o' trivia, Alvin Greenman, who played Alfred the young janitor, makes an appearance as a doorman in the 1994 remake. 🌲 ❄️ 🎄 🎅 #MiracleOn34thStreet #1947 (#MiracleOn34thStreet1947 #TheOriginalAndBest ) #EdmundGwenn (#SantaClaus ) #MaureenOHara #GeneLockhart #NatalieWood #JohnPayne #WilliamFrawley #AlvinGreenman #GeorgeSeaton #BluChristmasHolidayMovieAsplosion2022 #iLoveMovies #christmasmovies #holidaymovies #xmas #christmasspecials #holidayfilms #holidays #movies #christmas #iLoveChristmas #blurays #bluray #MovieNerd #abluchristmas #christmasfilms #christmasmoviemarathon . https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm7h1V0PNj8pjvknSlfrzu4TVMRnVfKWi5HCRE0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
