Well, minus the monster hunting. He never expected them to become bestsellers—or potentially a tv series, if his agent could only convince him to out his real identity. While Dean's also writing his latest bestseller on a deadline, a misunderstanding and his own social ineptitude leave him completely cut off, aside from his new pen pal who Dean only knows as Bluebird. Cas had spent the last two years desperate to hold Dean’s attention. Right when he felt they might be getting somewhere, Dean was called away on an emergency. Of course he had to go and lament about his troubles to a random tree, thanks to a distracting plaque inviting the public to participate in a new town project. To his surprise, he seems to hit it off— completely anonymously of course— with Western Red Cedar #2409. Through a ridiculous series of coincidences, it could be the best thing that ever happened to either of them.

The fluffy pining in this one is enough to form its own forest. Park ranger and secret writer Dean and socially inept librarian Cas really shine in this two person love triangle.

They are both so earnest in person and in writing and it's clear early and often that they will be so good together if they just get out of their own way. It was miscommunication with a touch of longing in person combined with a sweet vulnerability when they corresponded that had me wanting to lock them in a room until they figured it out.

This is the perfect comfort fic for when you need some soft pining with a soft landing.

so I legit just made a tumblr account today because tbh I had no idea how the app worked and new things scare me, but we push through. anyway I was looking at destiel stuff (currently watching the show for the first time, am currently in season ten) and found your blog. your art is amazing!!!

I don’t have any irl friends who watch the show to geek out with so I was excited to share some songs that give me destiel vibes with someone who actually knows the ship.

my absolute favorite song that I associate with them is The Beach by The Neighbourhood (the vibes are immaculate imo) but I also really like Atlantis by Seafret.

Oh, to be a baby Supernatural fan again *dreams* I think you'll like it here. I highly recommend checking out some of the amazing meta from the seasons by people like @mittensmorgul (and who else?? mittens, help me out here. I think I'm going senile in my old age), and there's a plethora of art (I've got a ton of it in my archive at this point (from lots of different past and current artists), but there's always more) and fanfic (check out @destielfanfic!) to be consumed.

I also love how closely associated Dean and Cas are to our favorite wholesome and heartbreaking songs. We just want everything for them, don't we? I'll have to check your suggestions out! Thanks for sharing them :)

Destiel Fic Recs!!

As you probably know, I love a monster Cas fic and this is a fun one. A mermaid AU with a lot of great lore.

When Dean was a kid, John took them on an ill-advised and unsuccessful beach trip. But Dean has never forgotten the moment of peace he felt in the water, and the half glimpse that he might not be alone there. It's a moment etched in his mind, and one he tried to drunkenly recreate years ago while Sam was at Stanford with no success. But finding himself struggling with what to do next now that their father and the yellow eyed demon are gone, Dean decides it's time to return to the beach in the hope that he can still reclaim that moment.

Dean and Cas have a delightfully magnetic relationship which makes this one immensely readable. There is also a truly fantastic brother dynamic (including Sam's sometimes clunky attempts to draw Dean out while missing the big picture). And Cas has some delightful mermaidy idiosyncrasies.

Suptober Day 10: Enchanted by tiamatv (9k, Teen)

Frog prince Castiel!! What else do you need?

The is a cute little one shot where Cas gets turned into a frog by a curse. It has all the fun tropes that go along with this genre. Frog!Cas snuggling with Dean and being cared for by Dean, Dean being able to use his words with Frog!Cas a bit better, awkward animal biology, and a healthy dose of humor. It's absolute perfection.

Highly recommend for a light little read. Low angst, fun froggy facts and a good time for all.

We Don’t Talk About It by luckshiptoshore @luckshiptoshore (6.5k, Teen)

This is a short little one shot, and it's SUCH a fun one. The concept is just such a delight.

Cas comes back wrong. Specifically, Cas comes back with angel aphasia-like condition where everything he says is a muddled mix of ancient languages instead of English as he intends.

Except…Dean would swear he seems to be able to understand him even though he doesn't speak Aramaic/Enochian/Ecclesiastical)/Latin.

There are some absolutely hilarious moments of Dr. Sexy appreciation and there is something extremely soft about Dean understanding Cas. There's a delightful element of somehow understanding each other better in different languages. It's funny and sweet and just just great read.

Dear Western Red Cedar #2409 by MittenWraith @mittensmorgul (63k, Mature)

This one is a fluffy little pine fest fic with so many soft moments. Dean is a park ranger with a crush on the local librarian, Cas. He's also secretly a successful writer. Between his long absences for work and his secret, he doesn't have much time for dating. Besides, he's pretty sure Cas isn't interested.

Cas, for his part, is very interested and very lonely. Desperate for some contact with anyone, he pours his feelings out in a missive to a stranger monitoring a reporting email for local flora. It's a delightful 2plt with some great epistolary elements. The characterization is soft and fluffy and the pining is soft and longing. It has all the elements of a great comfort fic.

no body, no crime by big_wet_cas_eyes @big-wet-cas-eyes (31k, Explicit)

This is technically a murder husbands fic, so know that going in, but it's a surprisingly *soft* one where it's more like a hurt/comfort with a side of murder. Being an enthusiast of both, this one managed to strike a great chord with me personally.

Sam and Cas have been friends since college and regardless of what else is going on in their lives, they always make time to get together once a week for dinner. But a week after Sam confesses he thinks his wife, Ruby, may be having an affair, he's greeted not by Sam, but Dean who informs him Cas is missing. Despondent, they turn to each other for comfort and find much more.

The emotional and physical (not just sexual) intimacy between Dean and Cas is absolutely lovely in this fic, and you find yourself rooting for them to be happy.

Stalk, Marry, Kill by Fullvoid @casgore (23k, Explicit plus timestamps)

On the other end of the murder husbands spectrum is this delightfully depraved fic. Dean is married to a famous author, Aaron, but he's restless and unhappy with his life until a smoking hot new co-worker walks into his engineering firm.

Dean and Cas are about to do a bad thing. Well several bad things. In great and dirty detail. This is a classic Void fic with obsessive undertones and bad behavior, so mind the tags. But if this is your thing, it's a great one.

Dean & Cas Are In Love

A hopefully one day conclusive study of these assholes, hopefully told as briefly as I can.

[it went fuckin canon? Rendered useless in my own job. Posting these gifsets from my drafts for @mittensmorgul​ who can make better use of them than me.]

I clearly picked this out to highlight the conflict between the three of them, and how the dynamic with Benny present also serves to highlight a lot of the things we can’t see when it’s just Dean and Cas talking at each other so urgently they pretty much forget that Benny is there. 

Cas tries to convince Dean out of it again and Benny is hearing what Cas is putting down and understands that Cas has very different motives and intentions to what Dean has, and that their quest has hit a dead end here, and now they simply have to survive around this obstacle. So he tries to show Dean gently as he can that Cas is not moving on this and will keep finding reasons to nay say the plan for whatever reason. 

The choice of “are you hearing what he’s saying” as phrasing is well chosen to have Benny urging Dean to re-evaluate what he’s looking at when he sees Cas, which is important when up topside he’s then making up a different interpretation of what happened to Cas and tormenting himself with that. Showing that at this point Dean is NOT understanding and reading Cas well, caught up in his hero fantasy of rescuing them all and having a nice happy family reunion at the end of this. 

A good clean win. 

Benny is more realistic and also an outside eye, so he can clearly read that this is not in the cards, and try and poke Dean to seeing it.

Dean immediately hate-crimes Benny and makes it plain he’s not bending to this reality, but this is what Benny is going to have to deal with; I think Dean is reading it as hostility between Cas and Benny that neither wants to work with the other and would rather the other was not there. In truth I think they’re already kinda connecting better over what is the objective reality than what Dean’s living in, and if you look at it from their point of view, Dean’s being by far the least realistic one and living in a hopeful state which I think is crucial to survival for him but unfortunately not going to be very emotionally healthy in the long term.

You know, normal Dean Winchester coping mechanisms.

Artist's note: Here's my art post for the @deancaspinefest. I got to work together with Mittens and had a great time. There were so many things I wanted to draw/paint, but I ended up with four pastel paintings and one digital one. The moment I read the fic, I knew i wanted to do some pastel portraits, even though I hadn't worked with pastels before. But I really like how the pieces turned out, despite my limited palette. I only managed to create one digital painting in the end. At first, I had planned to do art for two other scenes, but the first time of Dean and Cas meeting was such a great scene for a banner, so I made another version without the font. Episode 128 - 7.02 Hello, Cruel World

And boy is it ever cruel! The subtitle there refers to the plot climax of this one, but also to season seven as a whole. The entire thing is built on pain being the key to reality, and doesn't that just suck! Like, massively! It sucks for Sam, it sucks for Dean, and it sucks for all of us! But we shall endure. :'D

We lose Cas right at the start, and then Dean carries his coat away like a widow leaving a soldier's funeral with a flag, and that sets the stage for his grief and guilt for the first long segment of the season. Meanwhile, Sam's just not coping well with his smashed walls and resurfacing Hell trauma, and using Dean's technique of repressing and denying is really, really not working for him.

So, bring on the pain and losses and gooey jerks who are this season's Big Bad-- a metaphor for capitalism. Wheee.

I’m still thinking about our discussion yesterday about Chuck basically ignoring Cas, and being stuck in a writing rut, 1000s of versions of Sam or Dean killing the other. 

And what @mittensmorgul Had said about Becky, and the world of fandom:

‘What if Chuck is “written out of the universe” through the power of that collective fanfic, if his creative force holding the universe together is replaced by the entire fandom circling wagons to write OUR ending, the happy ending where Chuck is rendered irrelevant? WHAT IS #SCULLYCOFFEE4NF?

In the summer of 2016, I noticed that coffee shop baristas yelling out names reminded me of Mulder yelling out “Scullaaay!” on my favorite show, The X-Files. So I gave my name as Scully for a laugh, shared the picture with some other fans, and encouraged them to try it, too. I even promised to donate a dollar to the Neurofibromatosis Network for everyone who did it. I didn’t raise a whole lot of money, but the idea to have a #ScullyCoffee4NF day on Scully's birthday was born.

Gillian Anderson rose to fame on The X-Files playing Special Agent Dana Scully. She continues to delight her fans with memorable roles in The Fall, Sex Education and The Crown just to name a few. Ms. Anderson has also been a longtime supporter of the NF Network. As fans of Gillian, we thought this would be a fun way to support the work of the NF Network & celebrate her iconic character’s birthday.

That in itself wasn’t surprising, but the fact he was sharing a cup while having a chat with the illustrious and storied Captain Novak was. He was so entirely caught off guard he almost forgot to salute as Rufus got to his feet.

“Chief Winchester, we weren’t expecting you in for another half hour or so,” Rufus said as Captain Novak stood up and turned around to be introduced and saluted. Dean was grateful to Rufus for babbling on for a bit before getting to business, because the second Dean saw the man’s face he lost the power of speech. “Captain Novak wanted to know where to get the best cup of coffee on base, so of course I led him straight to your office. Captain Castiel Novak, this is Chief Petty Officer Dean Winchester, mechanic extraordinaire and keeper of primo coffee beans.”

Dean managed another salute, which Novak returned.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Chief Winchester,” Castiel said, looking just as knocked off balance as he shook himself off as Dean felt. “I understand we’ll be working closely together.”

Since Dean was standing there rather dumbly nodding back at him, Rufus broke the tension by clearing his throat and sitting back down at Dean’s desk.

“Captain Novak will be shadowing me for the next few days, and then taking over full time by the end of next week,” Rufus said. “Though I’m sure you don’t need me teaching you the ropes on how an airfield runs.”

Novak let out a little huff of a laugh at that. “Hopefully not. Though it is a new working environment, and the transition can be difficult for everyone involved. It’s well known you’re a beloved leader to your crew, and filling those shoes is never easy. Though the excellent coffee doesn’t hurt,” he added, taking his seat and toasting Dean with his cup.

Dean just stood there looking at Novak’s shoes before finally shaking himself off and noticing the apologetic smile on his new boss’s face falter just a little. Novak glanced at Rufus before looking back at Dean.

“I hope we haven’t overstepped, invading your space like this…”

“No, sir. My door is always open for anyone who needs it,” Dean finally managed, starting to feel like a human being and not a walking x-ray scan. Novak was still staring at him, though, and he knew he must be making a terrible impression. He pulled himself together and stood up a little straighter. “Even if they just need a decent cup of joe.”

“Well, Winchester, since you’re here, would you mind going through morning inspection with the Captain?” Rufus asked, after it was clear that Dean and Cas would otherwise just continue to stare at each other if left to their own devices.

Dean was doubly grateful that he’d already stopped for breakfast on his way in and hadn’t brought it with him to eat at his desk. He dropped his gear bag beside his desk and grabbed the inspection roster off the shelf beside the door.

“Ready when you are, Captain. One fifty cent tour, coming right up.”

Dean Winchester inherited his father’s garage (and their family home, and his 14-year-old genius of a brother) shortly after his eighteenth birthday. Their Uncle Bobby comes down to help Dean learn how to run the business, and Sam convinces his brother to take some classes so he’ll be equipped to expand the mom and pop garage into the classic restoration shop he’s dreamed about for years. Now five years later, a little foray onto the internet to promote his shop leads Dean to a very interesting corner of Tumblr, and a mysterious online friend who only knows Dean as his #Fiance Anon. What happens after more than a year of increasingly fond anonymous correspondence?

This is one of my all time favorite AUs because of the author’s fun and familiar incorporation of Tumblr and their brilliant characterizations of everyone and the incredibly witty banter that had me giggling throughout their story. We vividly see Dean’s and Cas’ characteristic self-doubt from Dean’s point of view that has them pining anonymously on Tumblr for a year and correspondingly tugs at our heartstrings and wish that we could lock them in a room together. I really enjoyed reading Sam’s big brain at work, and although he is a bit too prying, it was amusing and sometimes comical how he enlists their found family on a project to bring personal happiness to his older brother by sussing out Dean’s anonymous crush. The interactions between Dean’s found family are playful and thoroughly help to flesh out the story while offering us some comic relief amidst the mutual pining. Readers will adore the Cas and Charlie dynamic, as well. I also love the immediate profound bond Dean and Cas felt for each other even though they didn’t meet in person. It’s through these anonymous Tumblr communications that give them a safe environment to be more revealing about themselves to each other than to the people in their own lives.

The author’s style of writing is always so comforting and leaves me in a state of joy by the last chapter. Even though Project Beyonce is filled with fluff and humor, this story is also about Dean and Cas saving each other from a life that isn’t quite fulfilled and believing they are worthy and deserve happiness, especially with each other. Readers will definitely be invested in our boys’ journey, and luckily for us, the author has created this into a Tumblr Anonymous series with more stories and timestamps, so you will surely become very attached and fall in love with this Dean and Cas!
