Head Up, Eyes With Pride
@domaystic Day 14: Parade Fandom: Castle (my FLM universe) Word Count: 814 Rating: G [][]
Kate tucks her hair behind her ear again as the breeze blows it across her face. She cheers with the crowd as another parade float passes them, watching as McKenna and Wyatt dash out with the other kids nearby to gather up the candy being tossed to them.
“Mommy! Look! I got some!” Wyatt cheers, scampering through their line of camp chairs to get to his mom.
“I see, bubby! That’s awesome!” Alexis encourages, peering into the bag her son holds out to her. “Go sit with sissy and try and get some more.”
Kate helps her grandson back to his spot in his own child-sized camp chair next to his sister when a familiar black and gold banner appearing down the street catches her attention.
“Guys! Get ready, here they come!” Kate calls, getting their family’s attention.
Her kids’ middle school marching band comes towards them, marching in as perfect formation as a bunch of seventh and eighth graders can be. Their matching yellow ‘Eastlake Secondary School Marching Hornets’ shirts and jeans pale in comparison to the uniforms of the high schools that had come before them in the parade, but it’s good enough.
Kate’s heart quickens with excitement and pride as they pause in front of them. She easily finds Miyana - in front with her dance class who had been recruited to be the Colorguard - waving her honeycomb patterned flag in matching choreography with the girls around her, a wide smile plastered on her face. Kate chuckles as Mia mouths the counts to her dance (a hard habit for the girl to break).
She scans down the brass line, recognizing kids she’d seen around school and other band concerts and lands at the large drumline diving the band in half.
The row of quad drums quickly tapping out the beats to their cadence.
The row of bass drums and cymbals struggling to play quietly enough to not drown out the other drummers.
And in the center of it all: the line of snare drums. Six of them are standing with their drums clipped to the harness hung around their shoulders. The seventh is seated in a wheelchair being pushed by another band parent, her drum resting on her lap as she skillfully plays the ending of their cadence and then holds her sticks in proper ‘rest’ position. Their little Nemo who had had to campaign to even be allowed to do band in fifth grade; their director not having faith in her abilities to keep up - only seeing her disability and not the determined and passionate girl in front of him.
After surviving that year and graduating to middle school, band took a complete 180. With a new director who had complete faith in her, Finn thrived. She became percussion section leader in her spring semester of sixth grade and has kept it every semester since. Even now, during their marching season, she’s drumline section leader.
Band is her safe place. One of the few place where she can keep up with everyone and no one treat her differently because of her CP.
The pause in the music allows Kate to turn and look at her family; all of them have wide smiles on their faces as they cheer on the kids. McKenna and Wyatt shout as they wave to their aunts and uncle, hopping to get their attention.
A moment later, Finn counts the drumline off and starts the roll off. Kate can hear a smattering of “Up!” as the band put their instruments to their mouths and starts to play. It’s a medley of theme songs for the different armed forces; fitting for the Veteran’s Day parade they are at.
The parade moves on, and Kate quickly spots Liam towards the back with his fellow saxophone players. She watches him skip for a beat, getting back in step with everyone. Soon enough, the band’s music fades as they continue through the parade route.
“Wow! They were good,” Alexis comments. “Definitely better than last year.”
“Oh, yeah,” Kate laughs, recalling the memory of last year’s disaster of a parade. This time was significantly better.
“Hey, Kate!” Castle calls to her over the heads of his mom and her dad. “What was it their teacher called the way they march? There was two of them and they do that specific one.” She sees the way his brow is scrunched, his brain working hard to remember the word.
“The style they use is called ‘roll stepping’ the other is ‘corps style’,” she says. It had been drilled into her from both her kids and their director; how could she forget?
“Yes! That’s it,” Castle smile. “Roll stepping,” he repeats to the stranger next to him as they continue their conversation.
Kate goes back to watching the parade, her grandkids racing for more candy, enjoying the fall sunshine and light breeze in the air.

An Apple A Day
A/N: Toddler speak is a great thing. Enjoy this example of it with Mia and Baby J
Miyana looked up from her phone when her nearly two-year-old daughter comes up to her. Jaycee had been playing so well by herself, so quiet that Mia was getting ready to check and see if she had fallen asleep.
“Hey, baby,” Mia smiles. “What’s up?”
“Appa?” Jace asks, her brow furrowing.
“No, Abba isn’t here right now. He’s at work, remember?” Mia says.
“Appa,” Jace says again, nodding this time.
“I miss Abba too,” Miyana nods.
“Appa!” Jace shouts, slapping at the couch when her mom doesn’t understand. “Appa.” the toddler makes the sign for ‘eat’ and it’s only then that Mia understands.
“Oh! You’re hungry. I’m sorry, baby,” Mia says, hugging her daughter. “Okay. let’s go get food.” Miyana picks up her daughter and they walk into the kitchen. “Okay, what do you want?”
“Appa!” Jaycee says, reading for the fruit bowl on the counter.
Mia follows her daughter’s reach, taking a moment to decipher her babble with the context clues. “An ‘apple’! I can do that!” Mia nods. “Apple. Can you say that?”
“Appa!” Jaycee repeats, happy with herself.
“Yes, ‘apple’“ Miyana cuts up the snack her her girl, smiling to herself. There will be a language lesson later, but for now, she’ll just enjoy an ‘appa’ with her favorite tiny person.

Last Line Tag
Tagged by: @mrsmungus (thank you, my buddy!)
Tagging: @razztazticffn @bwayfan25 @bunysliper (and anyone else who wants to play! Tag: you’re it)
This comes from the newest FLM Chapter that should be up tomorrow.
Miyana laughs at that, rolling her eyes at the sarcasm written all over the text. “Hear that, baby girl? Everyone is so excited to meet you!” Jaycee stares up at her, the deep brown of her eyes focussing someplace between Mia’s nose and the air between them.

A Little Piece of Home
This weeks @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt fill. Hope you enjoy!
Prompt: Promise you’ll write
“Alright: I have to go now,” Miyana said, looking up at her daughter. From her perch on the top bunk, Emilia looked so small and scared. It was her first summer away at camp, and Mia was regretting it already.
“What if I have a bad dream?” Emi asks her.
“Then tell your counselor, she’ll help you.” The mom stood on tiptoe and kissed her baby’s cheek. “You are going to just fine,” she insists. “And Jace is right over there, she’ll look after you,” Mia says, reminding the girl that her older sister was three cabins over.
“Will you write to me? you won’t forget about me?”
“Forget about you? How could I? I’m going to miss you so much, you have no idea. This summer is not going to be the same with you and Jace gone. Abba and I will write you so many letters, I promise.”
“Okay.”
“Okay. I love you,” Miyana says with another kiss.
“I love you, Ima,” Emilia says, leaning over the railing to hug her mom one last time.
“Whoa! You’re gonna fall!” Mia says with a laugh, pushing her daughter back onto the bed.
With one final wave, she turns and leaves the cabin, meeting her husband on the dirt path where he’d come from getting their older daughter settled.
“How is she?” Byron asks.
“She’ll be okay,” Mia nods, more for her benefit than her daughter’s. She takes his hand and squeezes.
“Of course she will,” Byron agrees. “She’s going to be having too much fun to miss us. You’ll see. When we come at the end of the month, she’ll be begging us to let her stay longer.”
They follow the flow of parents back to the parking lot and drive back down the long driveway out of camp.
The next day at lunch, Emilia squeals with glee when her name is called to pick up mail. She excitedly shows off the postcard to all her friends, and reads it aloud of all to hear.
Emi, Happy first full day of camp! I can’t wait to hear about all the things you do! Have fun! Love, Abba

People all over the city walked around with backpacks. Everyone from small kids with baby dolls and action figures hanging out of their kitty and Paw Patrol printed bags, to tough business men carrying black, minimal bags holding all their important documents (and probably a Mac computer).
And Miyana Castle was no exception. When outside of her apartment, Mia lived out of her bag. It held basically her entire life, and kept her prepared for nearly any situation. From a full face of makeup, the makings of an emergency outfit, and even dance shoes hidden in a compartment, this bag was Mia’s life.
Until it went missing.
She had set it down on the floor just outside the stall when she could still see it as she did her business. She turned away for ten seconds and when she looked back, her bag was gone. Her stomach dropped; the world stopped. She was royally screwed.
“Hey, have you seen a blue backpack around here?” She asks the first person she sees, trying to keep her voice level. “I set it down over there, looked away and it was gone.”

Drabble A Day May-Day 10
Going back to my universe for this one. Using prompt 20. Enjoy!
They pass by the man every day as they walk home from school. The bus drops them off across the park, so they have no choice but pass him; a man with shaggy brown hair and wild blue eyes. He’s dressed in dirty jeans and an even dirtier jacket that Mia thinks used to be green. He sits on the curb, his duffle bag tucked tightly beside him, a little sign on cardboard next to him reading ‘spare some change?’
Mia never does; the man gave her the creeps.
But she remembers her mom and dad always telling her to be generous with the world and other people and to pay it forward.
So one day, when the cold wind howls and her sibling are yelling at her to hurry up so they can get home faster, Miyana dumps the plastic bag of change she had collected all week into the man’s bucket.
“Stay warm,” she smiles at him. He returns it with a curt nod, and Mia quickly dashes off to meet the others.

Miyana ‘Mia’ Cyan Castle was born on February 17 in Manhattan, New York. She currently lives in Brooklyn with her bull dog, Goose, and two crazy roommates. Mia is a Broadway chorus member and an elementary music teacher for a living and often gets told she looks like Krysta Rodriguez.
Mia Grew up in Eastchester, New York with her parents, Lauren and David, and her four siblings. They are quintuplets and Mia is right smack dab in the middle; three girls: Miyana, Danielle, and Finley, and two boys: Liam and Austin. They also have a older half-sister from their mom’s previous relationship named Alison.
She is the best aunt to her nieces and nephews, and will spoil them rotten if given the chance.
Miyana has been a performer all her life; dancing since she was three and in theatrical productions since she was seven. She has a mezzo-soprano singing range (hence her screen name ‘mezzomia) and considers tap and lyrical her strongest styles of dance. Her best subject in school was English and she is conversational in both Spanish and American Sign Language (mostly due to her brother’s girlfriend who is deaf and gave her the motivation to learn)
Her current role on Broadway is as Woman 3 in the ensemble of ‘Mean Girls’, and she also works part-time as a music and Chorus teacher at her old elementary school.
Mia is very kind to everyone and tries to find the bright side of everything. She will defend the people she loves with her life, a trait her mom also holds, and strives to make everyone around her be treated as kindly and respectfully and fairly as possible.

I'm sorry, I dont think I ever read your ff... Where can I find them? And also: F, O, W, X
Hello, my anon friend! I’m so glad you want to try some of my stuff. It makes em smile. Go here to read my things.
Now on to your questions!
F) Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Miyana sits down onto the couch, looking at him before lying back, using his lap as a pillow.
“Told you you shouldn’t have eaten that Thai food,” Byron remarks, sensing how uncomfortable Mia was.
“The problem isn’t the Thai food,” Miyana explains. “The problem is that Baby J has a problem with the Thai food.” She’s cradling her seven month pregnant belly trying to get their unborn child to calm down. “If she comes out not liking spicy food, I’m gonna be mad.”
Byron chuckles as he responds to another email. “I wouldn’t worry too much. We both love spicy food, so it’s almost genetic our kid will love it too. And who knows, heartburn can also be a sign a baby will be born with hair.”
“If that’s true, then after today I’m sure she’s gonna be born with dreadlocks! God!” Miyana whines, throwing a hand over her forehead.
“Thai Food?” Brynn asks, coming into the dressing room and seeing how miserable Mia is, a plastic bag of take-out in her hands. “Why do you keep eating that when you know Baby J has a problem with it?”
“See? I told you she has a problem with it!” Miyana says, looking up sharply at her boyfriend, glad someone agreed with her on the matter.
So I picked this one, from one of the stories in my Castle universe, because I feel like I really captured Miyana’s attitude here. I had SO much fun writing this entire chapter, and this scene made me laugh out loud while writing it.
O) How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?
It’s a good mix of both, actually. Generally, I know the plot or prompt I’m using and how I want to the scene or story to go. But then other times, the characters just tell me what to write and I go with it. For example: my most recent NCIS fic about Tali’s necklace came from a spark of an idea of Tali having the necklace and what she did with it and how she would react if it got lost or broken. I tapped into the mind of a five-year-old kid and wrote the thing.
W)Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones?
I love any prompt I can get! Lately, though, had been more specific prompts, like I’ll see a Tumblr post and it will spark something and I’ll go write it. Like my thing for the anniversary for ‘Jet Lag’; that came from a post my friend made and I wrote it for her. But, any prompts I get will somehow turn into a thing,
X) A character you enjoy making suffer.
Wow, a hard one! I hate making ANY of my characters go through hard times; it makes me sad so I generally stick to the positive. But right now I’m writing this thing for a character of mine named Deacon. It’s really deep and heavy, but I feel like it’s something we need to have to know him.
