Hiii! I've recently found your writing and I'm living for it. Your angst tugs at my heart strings in all the right ways. So I hope that I saw right that the angst prompt list was still open? So maybe could I request number 3. "What would you do if I didn't come back?" With Mammon? Hope you are well!! :D
“What would you do if I didn’t come back?”
Mammon
**********
A drunken stupor had been laid like a blanket over the majority of the brothers, either in a deep comatose state or on the speedway there, with the exception of the two eldest and their human companion.
With Lucifer carrying the twins to their room, you and Mammon were tasked with Levi, Satan, and Asmodeus. While the second born had carried Levi to his tub, covering him with a blanket, he moved to carry an unconscious Satan to his room.
That left Asmodeus with you, your silent thanks to their father went unheard, carrying the lightweight demon as he wrapped his arms loosely around you. Kicking his feet and singing a tune you’ve heard a thousand times, you felt his head settle in the crook of your neck, thick tears now making their way from the peach of his eyes to the warmth of your skin.
“Asmo? What’s wrong?” Your face was flushed and worried, trying to focus on getting Asmo to bed before your own drinks started to hit your hard, but Asmo and his tears needed priority.
“I- you’re gonna leave us. Again! But- But this time... you won’t come back! You’re staying... up there!” He hiccuped between his words, taking breaks to breathe short and shaky sighs, his arms tightening as more tears fell.
The bounding footsteps you heard came closer, turning the corner, Mammon had found you, only able to shake his head at the crying Asmo before opening the door for you, allowing you to put the crying demon to bed.
“I’m not going anywhere for now. And when the program is over, I’ll find a way back, I promise.” You whisper, tracing strands of his hair while Mammon covered his body with the large comforter, moving away once you saw his breathing even out fairly quickly.
“Lets go to bed. My room?”
“Yeah. Alright.” His voice was low, tired, but he moved quickly to the door, your hand in his before he closed the door. Making your way down the hall to your room, you saw his shoulders, tensed and low.
Why is he anxious?
“Mam. You good?” Your voice was slow, the dizziness of alcohol now muddied your mind, your body felt flat and more heavy. Your skin flushed with color, felt warmer, but there also was a chill that felt delightful.
Now you were feeling it.
“Mn? Yeah, yeah. Just, I heard Asmo. Before. Got me thinkin’ is all.” He muttered, his ears an angry red, his own strides slowing down to match your slightly unstable pace.
“Eh, well. I’m not leaving anytime soon. And I’ll find a way back. ‘m saying it again ‘cause it’s true.” You leaned your head on his shoulder, letting his drag you into your bedroom, detaching himself from you to take off his jacket. You unzipped the rest of your sweater, shrugging it while kicking off your shoes, tiredness was hitting you harder then a fright train.
“Yeah. I get it. I just... don’t like thinkin’ about that stuff. You leaving. I like how everythin’ is, like, it’s all centered ‘n how it’s supposed to be.” He stripped, leaving himself in just his boxers before jumping into your bed, your now (almost) bare form following.
“What would you do?” You asked, your head ducking under his lifted arm, laying on his chest, his arm tucked into your waist.
“What d’ya mean?” He asked, eyes closed, his hand moving up to grab your thigh, he wanted more of your body on his.
“What would you do if I didn’t come back?” Your eyes closed, a leg now wrapped around his waist, but that didn’t help the spike of anxiety he felt at those words. You heard his heart pick up just a bit, the shiver that left his body, the grip that dug into your body.
“[ Y/n ], babe, I don’ wanna... think ‘bout that.”
“Okay, ‘kay. ‘m sorry.” You sighed, trying to calm the demon under you
“Good. ‘Cause if ya didn’ come back to me... I’d lose my fuckin’ mind.”
“Mam. ‘s fine. Ya don’ need to explain.”
“But I do. Can’t have ya leavin’ me now, I’m in too deep with ya, love ya too much. Can’t get enough of you... so if ya left. I’d feel empty... like, like ‘d rather die than never see ya again.” The tears welled up in his eyes, the thoughts of you leaving him now littered his mind, darkening the light in his eyes.
“Mam. Mammon. ‘m not leaving anytime soon. ‘ll always come back to you.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”

Gram·pun·cle [geram-puhn-cuul] n. A gay man who formerly dated your grandmother only to later come to terms with his sexuality but still stay in the family to take care of your mother and aunt growing up.
Alan Palmer was my Grampuncle. When my cousins and I were younger, we couldn’t figure out what to call him. He was our grandpa in terms of age and raising our mothers, but he functioned more as the classic “fun gay uncle”, so we settled on a combination, Grampuncle. While we all had amazing relationships with Alan, mine was special. I have known Alan and his husband, Bill, since birth (making them the first ever gay couple I knew in my life).
Growing up and struggling with my sexuality, I was always able to look up to them to show me that true love really does have no boundaries. I will never forget, in 2015, standing inside the Michigan courthouse beside Alan as he and Bill exchanged vows and got married. They showed me, a young, insecure gay boy, that there was a place for me in the world and that I had a future to look forward to filled with love and joy.
Along with that joy, there eventually came some pain. Alan was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the early spring of 2020. A week or so after the diagnosis, the world fell into a global pandemic. Those first few months were intense. I heard the horror stories from Alan of how scary it was going into the hospital for rounds of chemotherapy with people who had the Coronavirus sitting in the next wing over. Being constantly in and out of the hospital he was a risk to others, and the lung cancer made almost everyone else a risk to him. With the exception of his husband, he was fully alone.
Alan did not admit to his loneliness and pain. He did not want to feel like a burden, but after talking with Bill and hearing how Alan was truly feeling, my family began to make the hour and a half drive from Chicago to Michigan almost every other week to visit. We brought Alan a pop-up gazebo and some fancy sun hats to protect him (with the radiation he could not be in the sun for more than a few minutes at a time), and we would sit in the backyard just talking and laughing for hours until Alan’s body would give in to the exhaustion and he had to go inside.
As his birthday approached, I racked my brain thinking of something special to do for him. I thought back to a video I saw online toward the beginning of the pandemic and decided to make a “hug shield”. What better gift to give than a loved one’s embrace during the pandemic? Using a clear painter’s tarp, I cut arm holes and taped together closed arm sleeves. It took a good few hours, but I finally figured out a design that allowed for full protection on either side of the hug. On the day of his birthday, we packed up the car and headed to Michigan.
After talking and eating cake, it was time for the surprise. As we pulled the shield out and hung it from the gazebo, Alan did something I had only seen at the courthouse; he cried. I had the honor of the first hug, and as I slipped my arms into the sleeves Alan and I held each other and cried together. He pressed his forehead against mine through the plastic and in between sobs he said to me, “I am so proud of you.” I knew this was our final goodbye. When Alan died the next week, I knew he went in peace. He had felt my embrace through the shield of love.
SEMI-FINALISTS: Bailey Andera, Thousand Oaks, CA Arianna Arroyo, Brooklyn, NY Alexis (Lexi) Berganio, Honolulu, HI Avery Bielski, Los Angeles, CA Henry Boemer, Villa Rica, GA Isabelle Bulmahn, Imperial, MO Jane Butera, Phoenixville, PA Mia Cashin, Norwell, MA Sean Choo, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA Zuri Clarno, Columbus, OH Lydia Corcoran, Apalachin, NY Cody Coyle, Winter Park, FL Anna Dai-Liu, San Diego, CA Alexander Guerrero Diaz, Richmond, VA Isabella Dufault, Irvine, CA Edwin Ellis, Atlanta, GA Laurel Emanuel, Raleigh, NC Aubrey Fisher, Cobden, IL Sunny Fong, Brooklyn, NY Sarah Galatoire, Houston, TX Zhao Gu Gammage, Wyncote, PA Sarah Gomez, Anaheim, CA Rachel Gray, Cleveland, OH Jameson Huge, Chicago, IL Sarah Grace Hutchinson, Alpharetta, GA Catheryn Ibegbu, Dearborn, MI Nicole Jo, Andover, MA Kelsey Johnston, Prince George, VA Gabrielle Kashorek, Avon, NY Samantha Kern, Akron, NY Nicole Kowalewski, Sykesville, MD Anne Lee, Edison, NJ Amelia Lin, Mukilteo, WA Judianne Meredith, River Vale, NJ Rabi Michael-Crushshon, Minneapolis, MN Geneva Millikan, Maumelle, AR Samantha Moy, Long Island, NY Shaakirah Nazim-Harris, Amityville, NY Eleanor Neal, Springfield, VA Sofia Ochoa, Camarillo, CA Basilia Oferbia, Brooklyn, NY Annika Olson, Rathdrum, ID Kaden Polt, Osmond, NE Shreeyamsa Poudel, Federal Way, WA Noah Robie, South Berwick, ME Zainely A. “Oh, you should’ve seen it, Kunihiro-sama,” the voice was saying over the phone. “Absolutely atrocious, I had never seen anything like it!”
“Hmn,” was all Kunzite said, albeit with a bit of a smile. He didn’t usually have much opinion on the matters of Izou’s latest gossip, but he was happy to hear Izou talk about anything at all. He took another bite of his dinner - plain white rice and grilled salmon. “And then?”
“Oh, I took myself right out of that business,” Izou continued, and Kunzite could just imagine his curls frazzedly waving in exasperation.
“It sounds like you might be out-growing that coffee shop,” was Kunzite’s observation.
Izou huffed over the phone. “Entirely possible. The staff is completely different now. Honestly, Kunihiro-sama, these new girls, sometimes their attitude is just appal- ow! ”
Kunzite quickly pushed some loose grains of rice past his lips. “Mn. Izou? Are you alright?”
There was a little hiss, and then a whine.
“Yes, I’m fine,” Izou answered. “Just a prick, that’s all.” The words came out mumbly as Kunzite could hear him suck on his finger. “Shoot, that smarts!”
Kunzite shook his head fondly. “Be careful,” he chided as he began to clean up the remnants of his dinner. He had about another five minutes of his break left. “Perhaps we shouldn’t chat if you need to concentrate...”
“Mn, oh no!” Izou insisted. The sound of the phone being adjusted to his ear cackled over the receiver. “At any rate, what time are you finishing tonight, Kunihiro-sama?”
“Late,” Kunzite answered. He glanced at the clock. “About midnight, I think.”
“Oh.” Izou sounded disappointed. “It’s been so long…”
It had perhaps only been a week since they'd last seen each other in person, but to both it had felt like an eternity. Between Kunzite’s long and odd working hours at the precinct and Izou’s equally erratic shifts at the coffee shop, it was difficult to set a real date time consistently, and every window of opportunity was never wasted. Although they chatted every night (and occasionally stumbled to work from either other’s homes), it seemed that their craving for the other’s physical presence was only growing exponentially by the day.
“I know,” Kunzite said kindly. He missed Izou too.
Izou seemed to gather up some strength. “Were you able to eat? You’ve mentioned before it’s tricky to get a meal in sometimes…”
Kunzite threw the plastic container out into the garbage under the sink.
“I managed to grab something. Although I must be hanging up soon, Izou…”
“Oh, okay,” Izou said in a rush. “Well, um, maybe I could drop by tomorrow, before my shift? I start late in the afternoon…”
Kunzite smiled. “That’d be lovely. Whatever works for you.”
“Okay.” Izou paused as though to say something pressing, but Kunzite chalked it up to their usual anxieties of never wanting to hang up. “Take care,” he finally said.
Kunzite tilted his head warmly.
“You as well. Chat soon.”
After hanging up the phone, Kunzite finished tidying up the break room and returned to his desk. In one corner stood the small rosebush that Izou had managed to resurrect. It was Kunzite’s pride and joy in the office, a perfect reminder in lieu of their photo from the Dark Kingdom. As he settled himself amongst his papers and computers, he thought briefly of how lucky he was. It was so surreal to think that this was where they - he and Izou - were now.
In the past few months, Izou’s memories of his third life had rapidly solidified, and it had been fascinating to Kunzite to learn everything about Kozakura Izou. His parents - a concept that Kunzite was still struggling to come to terms with - lived in the countryside, on a small, modest farm. His mother was an artist, and his father was a photographer. Izou himself had moved to Tokyo at age fourteen to better his schooling and career opportunities. In between part time work and school, Izou loved to read, thrift, garden, and shop. His creativity energy would burst into little endeavours - sketches, doodles, collages - and was increasingly weaving into his sense of style and fashion. It wasn’t uncommon for Kunzite to hear a little yelp or hiss over the phone as he had earlier- followed by the endearing dismayed whine - from sewing accidents wherein Izou had stabbed himself at his fingertips. As Kunzite flipped through his briefing updates in his hands, he wondered which project Izou had been working on today, and if he would be seeing it soon.
“Saitou-san.”
Kunzite glanced up to see a younger officer leaning over the corner of his cubicle. He was holding two folders in one hand, while the other was scratching his head under his cap. Behind him, Kunzite caught a glimpse of the civilian as she left the precinct, her dark auburn hair swinging behind her.
“Yes, Kobayashi-san?”
“I just got another statement about the nondescript white van. That makes five so far.”
“No attacks?”
“None, just trailing.” Kobayashi scrunched up his nose. “It’s hard to get an idea though on where to begin. No identifiable markings, and none of the license plates line up. Still seems worth investigating.”
Kunzite’s eyes drifted to the other folder. “And the other case?”
“Mn? Oh. Just another sighting of the cargo truck with the black star. No attacks yet this week, but it’s definitely suspicious.” He looked at Kunzite sheepishly. “I guess you’ll probably want the more exciting one, huh?”
If it was one thing Kunzite knew very well, it was patterns. And he knew what would follow the cargo truck with the black star all too well.
“I’ll take the van,” he said curtly, taking the folder.
The younger officer grinned in excitement, holding the remaining case to his chest.
“Maybe this means I’ll get to meet a Sailor Senshi…!”
“I think you have much more pressing concerns than that,” Kunzite said crossly. He gestured to some of the boxes stacked up at the farthest wall of the precinct. “Why don’t you start setting those up instead.”
Flushing embarrassedly, Kobayashi straightened immediately.
“Yes sir!”
As the younger officer hurried off to set up the precinct’s newest surveillance testing program, Kunzite shook his head. Although he was the senior officer, occasionally Kunzite felt more like an unofficial mother hen than a leader. Quickly, he brushed the thought aside and returned to his paperwork with a sigh.
And when else had he felt like that before…?
---
It had been a long night. While his precinct also technically dealt with thefts, burglaries, and other emergencies, Kunzite found the public-facing aspect of his job far more draining. Although he usually could leave it to the younger officers, the fact remained that most of them still needed guidance and training, which Kunzite had to deliver. By the time he climbed his way up to the top floor of his low-rise apartment, Kunzite’s stomach was rumbling, and he was ready to hit the hay.
However, upon arriving at his door, Kunzite was greeted by a little surprise that woke him right up.
“Izou?”
The young man had been sitting by the door, shrouded in a thick winter jacket with a backpack to his side. Seeing Kunzite, he jumped to his feet. “Kunihiro-sama, welcome home!” It was the biggest grin Kunzite had seen all day.
Despite himself, Kunzite couldn’t help but reflect a slightly confused smile back. He gently laid a hand on the small of Izou’s back. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “Is everything alright?”
“Oh, yes,” Izou assured, lifting what looked like a large stack of lunch boxes wrapped in a spring green cloth. “I thought you could use something heartier so late after dinner time,” he said cheerfully. “It’s just some takeout, but…” His cheeks glowed faintly. “But...I couldn’t wait until tomorrow.”
As Kunzite inserted his key, he had to do his best to keep from growing into a ridiculous grin. Izou was just so sweet and thoughtful.
“You really shouldn’t have,” Kunzite finally said, as the bolt unlocked. Izou glanced up uncertainty.
“Was it too forward of me?” he asked.
Kunzite finally let the fondness of his smile show, and gently nudged Izou into the door.
“Not at all.” I’ve missed you too. “Please. Come in.”
Splitting into a grin, Izou slipped off his shoes and leapt inside. As he got settled and began to unpack the food, Kunzite’s smile faded when he realized how late it truly was. One in the morning, and while his area was safer than Izou’s neighbourhood, the city could still be a very dangerous beast at this hour.
“How long were you waiting for?” he asked as he slid out of his own shoes, watching Izou for any indication of polite refrain.
“Oh, not long,” Izou answered merrily, now plating the food into bowls. He gathered up the paper and plastic and swirled around to throw them into the garbage, not noticing Kunzite’s knitting brows.
“Izou.”
The boy paused for a moment to look up at Kunzite hesitantly. “About an hour,” he answered quickly. “But I knew you might be late so I brought a book, so it’s okay, really.” He then returned to cleaning up and setting the kettle for some tea.
Kunzite glanced down at the key that was still in his hand, and made up his mind. As Izou began undoing the tea tin, Kunzite gently but protectively began to wrap his arms around the younger man’s waist, bringing him close to his chest. Izou was clearly delighted by the closeness and looked over his shoulder to shyly smile at Kunzite.
“The city can be dangerous this late at night,” Kunzite murmured quietly into Izou’s soft hair. “You should be more careful…”
Izou was obviously touched by Kunzite’s concern, and brushed it off. “I’m fine, I can take care of myself,” he insisted. He placed one of his own hands on Kunzite’s forearm. “Don’t worry.”
Of course Kunzite couldn’t help but worry, he’d been worrying about Izou even before he had met him in this life.
“Maybe you should consider a different place to live,” Kunzite suggested. “Somewhere safer.”
Izou shrugged and began to swirl the tea leaves budding in the hot water. “Maybe once I have a little more money,” he agreed.
It took Kunzite a few moments to consider what his next words were going to be. Eventually, he pulled one arm away from Izou and placed the key, with purpose, onto the counter in Izou’s line of sight.
“I was thinking…” Kunzite mumbled softly, “that maybe you’d like to live with me.”
At first, Izou blinked at the piece of metal on the counter, not entirely sure if he was understanding, or had correctly caught what Kunzite had said. Unawares, Kunzite tightened his hug marginally, hoping that his suggestion wasn’t a step too far.
Slowly Izou turned his head around to look up at him. When Kunzite saw those big, bright and breathless eyes, he knew his fears were unfounded.
“Really?” Izou whispered, almost shyly. “You...think we’re ready for that?”
It was clear by Izou’s exhilarated whisper that he clearly was delighted to think they were, and Kunzite was definitely certain they were. Well, he was also certain because of how well he and Zoisite had lived together in the past… So, surely they were more than ready to move in together by now.
“Absolutely.”
It was clear Izou could hardly believe this turn of events, trying his best to hide the big grin Kunzite could tell was growing on his face. Finally, after rolling his bottom lip between his teeth, Izou beamed and nodded.
“Sure.”
It took nearly all of Kunzite’s willpower to not pick up Izou and swirl him around in his new home. Instead Kunzite simply broke into a smile again, followed by a short, relieved chuckle...Very quickly, the two of them were grinning and flushing together with excitement. Was this it? Were they really ready for this? It was as if both men were suppressing an armory of feeling that they were not yet ready to give words to, and giggling and laughing was the closest way they had to release the tension of mounting exhiliation that they were both trying to restrain.
“I’ll help you move in, the next time you’re free,” Kunzite said earnestly, seeing that he wasn’t alone in wanting to live together as soon as possible.
“I don’t have much stuff,” Izou replied, who couldn’t stop grinning behind his hands. “Although...I don’t have much money for my share of rent...”
“You don’t have to worry about any of that,” Kunzite reassured immediately. “I’ll take care of everything.”
Izou’s eyebrows stitched up together. “But...what about food?” He glanced around. “Utilities…”
“I’ll take care of everything,” Kunzite repeated again, firmly but gently. “I want to share my home with you. I want it to be our home. I’ll get everything ready.”
It was clear Izou couldn’t believe his luck. He was practically dancing into Kunzite’s arms when suddenly realization flickered across his face. Kunzite caught it instantly and his smile disappeared. “What is it?”
Izou didn’t say anything, but green eyes darted over to the bathroom. There was a moment of silence as both of them realized what Izou had just remembered... and Kunzite suddenly felt a bit awkward and unprepared.
“It’s okay,” he insisted, although he knew the memory of it wasn’t exactly pleasant. “Everything’s been removed, I promise.”
Hesitantly Izou glanced up at Kunzite, and it was clear how conflicted he felt about the situation.
“It’s empty,” Kunzite insisted again. “You can fill it with your things when you move in. Izou’s things.”
This seemed to make Izou feel a bit better, and the smile slowly resurfaced back up a bit. “Well it’s...not like I didn’t like the stuff ,” he mumbled a bit. “I mean, I did like that stuff and I still do like it but...it was just a bit weird seeing it all there ready for you, you know?”
“I understand.” Kunzite gently gave Izou a bit of squeeze.
“Did you really throw it all out though?” Izou asked. “It would’ve been a waste...I suppose I wouldn’t mind using it if you still have it.”
At that, Kunzite paused. He had gotten rid of it from the bathroom, but hadn’t actually thrown the items out…
Izou looked up curiously. “Kunihiro-sama?”
“Truthfully?” Kunzite asked.
“Truthfully,” Izou answered, but the smile on his face gave away that he was going to be okay with whatever Kunzite answered.
“Don’t look in the closet.”
Despite himself, Izou couldn’t help but giggle, and Kunzite’s shoulders released with relief. As Izou tried to hide his laughter behind his hand, Kunzite glanced up at the clock and saw how even later it was getting.
“Let’s eat.” He slowly undid his arms around Izou and lightly grazed Izou’s cheek as he pulled away. “I’ll undress and we’ll have supper.”
“Wait.” Izou took a step forward and placed his hand on Kunztie’s chest to stop him. There was a moment, and Izou’s eyes slowly trailed up from the bottom of Kunzite’s uniform, from its hem to his belt, to finally his eyes. “...Keep them on?”
Kunzite could tell that look anywhere and, hiding a smirk, he obliged. Gathering the food from the counter, the two of them made their way over to the couch to settle in for some cozy dinner. As Izou made himself comfortable nestling in Kunzite’s arms as they flicked the television on, Kunzite couldn't help but relish this humble but incredible moment between them.
Zoisite was finally home.

Women’s groups and prominent feminist figures have remained almost universally silent over a former staffer’s accusation of sexual misconduct against former Vice President Joe Biden—including those individuals and groups who came to express regret for how the Democratic Party handled similar accusations made against President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.
The collective non-response from mostly Democrat-aligned groups comes as potential female running mates struggle themselves in responding to the Biden allegation, which has the potential to upend his campaign against President Donald Trump, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women in alleged incidents spanning decades. And it echoes the division among progressives when the #MeToo movement revived scrutiny of Clinton’s own alleged sexual misconduct.
The Daily Beast contacted 10 top national pro-women organizations for this story, including Emily’s List, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the National Organization for Women. Most organizations did not respond to a detailed request for comment about the allegation by Tara Reade, a former staff assistant in Biden’s Senate office who has accused the former vice president of forcibly penetrating her with his fingers in the early 1990s. Others replied and did not provide a statement.
One prominent women’s political group cited a scheduling conflict and asked to be kept “in mind for other opportunities!” When pressed if the following day would work better, an associate said it would not, citing another scheduling conflict.
The near-total lack of acknowledgement from nearly a dozen leading pro-women organizations comes as new corroboration has emerged with respect to the allegation, which the Biden campaign has categorically denied. Neither the Biden campaign nor Reade responded to requests from The Daily Beast for comment Tuesday.
It also is taking place as prominent elected women in the Democratic Party rally to Biden’s side. On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton became the latest to offer her endorsement of Biden’s candidacy—a symbolic passing of the torch from one presidential candidate to another, but a moment that also served as a reminder of moments in recent party history when accusers were almost uniformly dismissed.
In 2017, attorney Patricia Ireland, who served as president of the National Organization for Women for the entirety of the Clinton administration, told The Washington Post that she wished she had “done more to be supportive” of Paula Jones, the former Arkansas state employee who alleges that Bill Clinton sexually harassed her during his time as governor.
“For Paula Jones, there were nice distinctions that people made: She didn’t work for him, he didn’t have the power to hire or fire her,” Ireland said at the time. “But that ignores the reality that he was a very powerful man.”
During the same period, feminist icon Gloria Steinem told The Guardian that she regretted some parts of her aggressive defense of Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, including a New York Times op-ed in which she dismissed accusations of sexual misconduct against the president. “Even if the allegations are true,” Steinem wrote in the 1998 op-ed, “the president is not guilty of sexual harassment. He is accused of having made a gross, dumb and reckless pass. President Clinton took ‘no’ for an answer.”
Steinem told the Guardian that “I wouldn’t write the same thing now because there’s probably more known about other women now. I’m not sure… What you write in one decade you don’t necessarily write in the next.”
But neither Ireland nor Steinem responded to a request for comment about Reade’s accusations against Biden. Bill Clinton has long denied Jones’ claims, settling a lawsuit she filed in 1998 for $850,000 with no apology or admission of wrongdoing.
Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Readeaccused Hillary Clinton of “enabling a sexual predator.”
“Hillary Clinton has a history of enabling powerful men to cover up their sexual predatory behaviors and their inappropriate sexual misconduct,” Reade said in response to Clinton’s endorsement. “We don’t need that for this country. We don’t need that for our new generation coming up that wants institutional rape culture to change.”
Reade first accused Biden of digitally penetrating her in a podcast interview with journalist Katie Halper in March. Two other people, including Reade’s brother and a friend who has remained anonymous, told various outlets that Reade had told them about certain aspects of the alleged assault and her subsequent dismissal from Biden’s office over the years.
On Monday, Business Insider quoted a former neighbor of Reade’s recounting that the ex-staffer had disclosed details of the alleged assault when she lived next door to her in the mid-1990s. “This happened, and I know it did because I remember talking about it,” Lynda LaCasse, Reade’s former neighbor, told the outlet.
On April 24, Reade told The Intercept that her mother called into Larry King’s cable-news program to discuss “problems” her daughter experienced with a prominent lawmaker in 1993. In the episode, a caller from San Luis Obispo, California—where property records indicate Reade’s mother lived at the time—asked the host “what a staffer might do besides go to the press in Washington.”
“My daughter has just left there after working for a prominent senator and could not get through with her problems at all,” the caller said. “The only thing she could have done was go to the press, and she chose not to do it out of respect for him.”
Reade said on Twitter that it was her mother’s voice. “This is my mom. I miss her so much and her brave support of me.”
Biden’s defenders have argued that Reade’s story has changed over time—she previously had said only that she felt Biden had inappropriately touched her and made her feel uncomfortable. But sexual-assault victims’ advocates have noted that its common for victims to hold back on details as they recount their traumatic experiences.
Various aides to Biden have said they have no recollection of any assault incident happening. And Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield said in a statement this month that “this absolutely did not happen,” and that “Vice President Biden has dedicated his public life to changing the culture and the laws around violence against women.” Bedingfield added: “He firmly believes that women have a right to be heard—and heard respectfully. Such claims should also be diligently reviewed by an independent press. What is clear about this claim: It is untrue.”
Over the past several days, the Biden campaign has signaled that it is paying additional attention to issues that disproportionately affect women. On Monday, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), one of the contenders thought to be on Biden’s shortlist of potential running mates, was a guest on a virtual town hall with black leaders on coronavirus’ impact on women of color. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), another possible running mate and former Biden rival, was also featured in a virtual forum addressing similar women’s focused issues late last week.
On Tuesday, in introducing Clinton during a virtual town hall, Biden declared she is “the woman who should be president of the United States right now.”
“I want to add my voice to the many who have endorsed you,” Clinton said during the event to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on women. “This is a moment where we need a leader, a president, like Joe Biden.” Biden, she said, has been “preparing for this moment his entire life.” The former vice president reciprocated by saying it was a “wonderful personal endorsement.”
On Monday, in offering her own backing, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi called him a “partner for progress in the White House.”
Four years ago, women’s groups threw their weight behind Clinton’s historic campaign as the Democratic Party’s first female nominee. But they remained largely out of the primary in 2020, when an unprecedented number of women campaigned with that similar goal in mind. Still, some groups haven’t been shy about criticizing parts of Biden’s past record relating to women.
In the early stages of Biden’s campaign, Planned Parenthood Action Fund took issue with a position he previously held around support for the Hyde Amendment, a provision that sought to restrict the use of federal money for abortion. In June 2019, the group’s executive director specifically called out Biden by name, reminding him that “the Democratic Party platform is crystal-clear” around repealing Hyde. Biden later denounced his support of the amendment.
Now, as Biden faces a sexual-assault allegation as the presumptive nominee, his past record and prominent female defenders are facing a new round of scrutiny. In particular, the decision to select a female running mate delighted many party activists and women’s rights advocates when Biden announced it in March, but is taking on a new form as the Reade allegation receives additional corroboration.
Already, potential nominees are having to answer questions about the allegation. The Daily Beast recently contacted the most prominent figures thought to be considered as possible contenders about Reade’s claim, including Harris, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams.
Among the seven Democratic women’s offices reached, only Abrams commented, telling The Daily Beast that “women have the right to be heard” and adding, in part, that “nothing in the Times review suggests anything other than what I already knew: That Joe Biden is a man of highest integrity who will make all women proud as our next president.”

Ooohh wangxian first kiss please! Thank you!
Another drabble prompt finished! I’m so happy, I got like five of them in a row and I’m slowly but surely making my way through them.
(I’ll still take more prompts tho. I love exploring this au so much)
And now, modern wangxian’s first kiss...
—
Their first kiss is an accident. And it starts on a day just like any other...
It’s ridiculous how happy Wei Wuxian is, these days. He didn’t realize he was such a sucker for domestic shit, but he is.
It’s been about six months since Wei Wuxian has moved in with his best friend and secret crush Lan Wangji. Their arrangement allows them to co-parent A-Yuan, whose own surviving family members can’t afford another hungry mouth to feed. It’s a good thing they’re doing, certainly, but it’s not like Wei Wuxian is being entirely selfless. He loves little A-Yuan, who is now three.
Their situation is so generically domestic that Wei Wuxian can’t help but call out, “Honey, I’m home!” whenever he returns from work.
Lan Wangji, the man of infinite patience, doesn’t point out that the joke has long since gone stale. Instead, he scoops up A-Yuan from where the toddler is no doubt building block towers underneath his desk, and brings him to the front door to greet Wei Wuxian.
Lan Wangji gets to work from home, the lucky bastard. Wei Wuxian dreams of being able to do the same someday, once his comic series starts generating enough money for him to quit his retail job.
“Xian-gege,” A-Yuan calls down at Wei Wuxian as he bends to untie his shoes, “Welcome home!”
This is their routine. It makes Wei Wuxian so unbelievably happy.
“Hello there, A-Yuan,” Wei Wuxian says, as soon as he straightens back up. He goes to give the toddler his daily evening smooch: a big ol’ wet one, right on the forehead.
It never fails to make A-Yuan squeal in equal parts disgust and delight.
That’s another part of their routine. But today, Wei Wuxian is on autopilot, even more so than usual, and without thinking, he places a similarly exaggerated kiss on Lan Wangji’s cheek.
Wei Wuxian realizes his mistake just a split-second too late and jerks back.
Lan Wangji... is making an expression that Wei Wuxian has never seen on his face before. The spot where Wei Wuxian’s lips touched his skin shines a little with saliva.
Wei Wuxian, for once, has no words.
The only person left in the room with a functioning brain is A-Yuan. He looks between them, aware that something has changed, but not able to comprehend what or why. “Xian-gege?” He asks.
Wei Wuxian glances at A-Yuan. His mind is in overdrive. Should he brush this off? Turn it into a joke? Or should he apologize and explain he did it without thinking?
Lan Wangji doesn’t wait for Wei Wuxian to make a decision. “Here,” he says, unceremoniously depositing A-Yuan into Wei Wuxian’s arms, “I should go start dinner.” And then he leaves.
Wei Wuxian notices that Lan Wangji has not yet wiped his cheek.
“A-Yuan, oh A-Yuan,” Wei Wuxian murmurs into the kid’s hair, “What do I do now?”
A-Yuan adorably misunderstands the question. “Watch TV,” he says, looking unfairly proud of himself for knowing the answer.
It’s so cute that Wei Wuxian forgets his anxiety. “Okay,” he replies, “TV it is.”
—
After watching three consecutive episodes of the mind-numbing children’s programming, Wei Wuxian has all but forgotten about the incident.
When they eat dinner together, all three of them, it’s as pleasant as always. It’s also very quiet. But that, too, is not unusual, since Lan Wangji has an odd rule about not talking during meals.
Wei Wuxian only remembers what he accidentally did when he’s tucking A-Yuan into bed. It’s his turn to read the boy a bedtime story, which he does brilliantly, character voices and all. Once done, he turns off the lamp, and pets A-Yuan’s head until he’s visibly losing the struggle to stay awake.
A-Yuan curls onto his side, a sure sign that he’s about to surrender to sleep. “Night night, Xian-gege,” he mumbles.
As Wei Wuxian bends down to give him his soft goodnight kiss on the cheek, he suddenly recalls, in alarming detail, how he had kissed Lan Wangji before. He winces, and finishes the rest of their nighttime ritual with mechanical movements.
Things get a hundred times more awkward when Wei Wuxian stands up to find Lan Wangji lurking in the doorway.
“Lan Zhan...?” Wei Wuxian whispers, as he tiptoes over.
Lan Wangji doesn’t answer until he’s finished closing the door to A-Yuan’s room. And then, “I texted Xiongzhang. Asked him for advice.”
“Huh?” Wei Wuxian tries and fails to comprehend what Lan Wangji means by that.
Lan Wangji’s expression is so intense, it could split cinderblocks! But his voice is very soft as he explains. “About earlier,” he clarifies, “When you... kissed me.”
“Oh.” Wei Wuxian panics. Why did Lan Wangji need advice about that?
“He said I should ask you,” Lan Wangji continues, “So I’m going to do that. Wei Ying... why did you kiss me?”
Wei Wuxian wants to sink through the floorboards. “I... just did it without thinking,” he admits.
“Oh.” The hallway is kind of dark, but Lan Wangji looks... disappointed?
Wei Wuxian decides to take a bold leap into the unknown. “I said I did it without thinking,” he amends, “but I think it was also like a physical Freudian slip?”
“Oh?” Lan Wangji clenches his hands into fists. “How... so?”
Oh, God. Is Lan Wangji really going to make him spell it out? Despite what others may say, Wei Wuxian’s face isn’t thick enough for this!
But Wei Wuxian does it anyway.
“I wanted to kiss you,” Wei Wuxian says, “That is, I think about kissing you a lot. So, when I was on autopilot, I just acted on impulse.”
Lan Wangji touches his cheek, as if he can still feel the press of Wei Wuxian’s lips. “You wanted... to kiss me?”
“Yes,” Wei Wuxian confirms, and adds, because he might as well go all the way, “I like you a lot, Lan Zhan. That is to say... I fancy you, I have the hots for you, I’ve been struck with Cupid’s arrow—“
Wei Wuxian does not get to finish his long and needlessly theatrical confession. His breath has been stolen.
Lan Wangji is kissing him. On the mouth. With his mouth!
Wei Wuxian melts into the embrace, hands curling into the folds of Lan Wangji’s rolled-up sleeves. Lan Wangji’s lips are warm and slightly chapped. It adds a delicious friction against the sensitive skin of Wei Wuxian’s inner lip that has him shivering down to the base of his feet. He tilts his head for a better angle, and their mouths slot together like they had been sculpted for this very purpose.
Wei Wuxian’s nerves are firing off like fireworks all over his body. He can feel Lan Wangji’s breath, can taste the other man’s skin, and it’s very overwhelming.
They part for air and immediately surge back together, bolder and hungrier. The slide of skin becomes smoother and slicker as their kiss deepens. There’s a faint scrape of teeth at one point and Wei Wuxian nearly crumbles to the floor in ecstasy.
He has never been happier.
Finally, Lan Wangji breaks their kiss. Wei Wuxian tries to chase his lips, wanting to sample Lan Wangji’s tongue, but he’s held in place with firm hands.
“I like you a lot, too,” Lan Wangji says.
“Oh God, I would hope so!” Wei Wuxian finds himself laughing at the absurd delayed confession. At Lan Wangji’s confused and slightly wounded look, Wei Wuxian elaborates, “I hope you don’t go around kissing people you don’t like like that.”
“No, never.” Lan Wangji looks offended by the very suggested. “Only... Wei Ying.”
That sucks the breath out of Wei Wuxian as efficiently as their earlier kiss. “Only me?” He repeats, “Lan Zhan... was that your first kiss?”
“Mn.”
“Me, too!” Wei Wuxian leaps into Lan Wangji’s arms. “I was saving my kiss for someone special,” he says, “Lan Zhan, I’ve been saving it for you! All this time! I’m certain of it!”
Lan Wangji looks broken. But also, somehow, happy. “Wei Ying...”
“I love you, Lan Zhan!”
“Love you... Wei Ying...”
This time, when they kiss, both of them are teary-eyed. It makes their movements sloppy.
Of course, neither one cares.
It’s true that their first kiss is an accident. But for Wei Wuxian, it’s the happiest accident of his life.

Little Distractions
“Is there anything else I can do for you, Doctor?”
Doctor Savel sighed, glancing around his unit before collapsing handily onto a chair in front of the screen on the wall. Look at her go – she even took his coat for him, hung it up and everything. He should have signed up for an assistant ages ago. Holdren had three, the blessed fuck. Probably didn’t even have to scratch his own ass…
“Sir?”
He roused out of his thoughts and eyed the girl. No – unit, not girl. That was going to be tricky to get used to. He’d always worked around synths, before, of course – from the time he was a teenager, they’d been a part of his life. Scurrying about carrying things, cleaning, obedient little cogs to keep the Institute running smoothly.
But to have one staring at him as he did now, awaiting instruction…
A mischievous whim struck. “Actually, unit, why don’t you pop in a holotape for me?” He gestured vaguely to the collection on a shelf on the opposite wall. “Soirée en Provence. It’ll be at the front, there.”
“Yes, sir.” She busied herself immediately, and in a few short moments the lights were dimmed, the projector humming as tinny, overdone romantic music smoozed through the air. He caught her eye and pat the cushion on the pristine white couch beside him
She froze. “… Sir?”
“Come, come. Have a seat. You’ll want to see this.”
Was this the first time he was seeing her hesitate to obey an order? But obey she did, perching delicately at the edge of the cushion as though she expected to be swatted off at any moment, like a naughty dog. They trained them quick for subservience, didn’t they? Puzzling, how many still managed to go rogue.
They watched in silence. The view swam over a faded, flickering image of some mansion in a vineyard. An argument in French, between two men – one older, one younger. A young woman ran out of the manor doors and through the vividly purple fields outside, framed by a dazzling view of the countryside. The younger man followed, caught her up in her arms in a seeming fit of passion. At last, the camera focused on the young woman’s features.
D8-84 blinked, puzzled. A moment of staring, then her eyes went wide, face lighting up in excitement as she pointed. “She looks like me!”
“You look like her.” Bemused he corrected her, lounging more comfortably. “The production line is always looking for new faces and algorithms to emulate in the creation process. I suggested this actress. Darla Gable, was her name.”
“Darla…” She mulled on that, little brow furrowing. Her hand moved to her head, fingering her curls. “My hair isn’t long like hers.”
“No, no. Wouldn’t be very practical, would it?” He waved a dismissive hand. “Besides, her style’s a bit – traditional for my tastes. The pixie cut suits you.” He flashed her a winning smile before he realized he’d done it. Funny – it was so easy to talk to her. And that blush, why, that looked almost human enough to fool him. Had they programmed that in, an instinctive reaction to a compliment?
“Am I – like her, then?” She spoke hesitantly, glancing at the swooning, over-wrought woman on the screen. “Am I supposed to be?”
“Be terribly useless in the lab, wouldn’t it, if you fainted at every surprise?” He chuckled, taking up a bottle of scotch and a little glass from the endtable. “No, unit. Your looks are hers – your personality is all yours. Or, rather, ours, from the algorithms used to make you.” But did a synth even have personality, really? How much was programmed, how much learned?
Questions better left for her actual creators. But he couldn’t resist prodding. “Do you want to be like her?”
“I want…” She bit her lip. She bit her lip. Dammit, maybe requesting her model specifically was a mistake. Too cute by half. Going to be damn near impossible to concentrate on pH levels in soil samples around her. At last she straightened, voice gaining a note of certainty.
“I want to be useful.” A nod. “I know that.”
“Well said, unit.” There was that blush again. They continued to watch as the daughter, a young heiress of the vineyard, was torn between potential suitors – the older man her father had lined up, and the young rapscallion who pretended himself wealthy in a stolen suit. She spoke with a lilt, tilted her hips and fluttered her lashes, tempting and innocent both at once. He snickered and paused, then rewound the tape.
“Try it.”
“Sir?” D8 snapped out of her trance.
“That – thing Darla did. With her eyes, and the pose. Do you think you can do that, unit?”
The synth blinked, dumbfounded for a long moment. Poor thing – this was probably well outside the social parameters she’d been uploaded with so far, though he knew for a fact he wasn’t the only one who entertained these 3rd-gens as more than a walking computer, to fetch and carry and log in daily notes. He sat back. “Go on.”
A soft breath. Then, delicately, she moved – lowering one shoulder, angling her hips to push up her body, lifting that swan neck, and the eyes. He’d almost laugh, if it didn’t also send a little jolt through him. He really did have something unique on his hands here, didn’t he?
“Not bad, for a first try.” He gestured and she sat again, face still red. “Keep practicing, mn? You might have some of the other synths swooning, if you keep that up.” A flash of a grin. What a delight it was to make her look flustered like that.
A little distraction wasn’t such a bad thing.
