In the most recent post, I'm using monster clay, which is a wax modeling clay (so it never permanently hardens). As you work with it, the wax warms up so you can make larger changes, and if you leave it alone for a while, the wax cools down and hardens, making it easier to refine the surface to become very smooth. I generally use a combination of burnishing it with a hard round surface, like the handle of a large paintbrush or craft knife, and just rubbing it with my fingers. (You can also use a heat gun to lightly melt it, which gives it a very smooth finish.)

(on the left are some of my polymer clay sculptures--the warm grey/sand colored ones have also been used for mold making--and on the right are monster clay)

If you use, polymer clay, you can achieve a similar finish by letting it rest for a while (maybe an hour to a day) and then burnishing it with tools and gently rubbing it with your fingers. It's also a bit harder to get sculpey as smooth since it can be very soft to work with even after letting it rest for a while. You can also rub it gently with a rubbing alcohol soaked cotton swab or soft paper towel, which will remove finger prints, lint, dirt, etc form the surface. That's usually my last step before baking to get a nice clean sculpt.
