2:00AM 2AM40- Kylie Minoise + Hostage Pageant: Kylie Minoise + Hostage Pageant (Split) Today I've got for you another split tape on 2:00AM, this one by Kylie Minoise + Hostage Pageant. Kylie Minoise is Lea Cummings, an English (Harsh) Noise artist. Hostage Pageant is Shane Church, an American Harsh Noise artist. Just like with the Wether + Sugarm tape I'll focus on the three seperate pieces contained on this split tape. Kylie Minoise is featured on this tape with one piece on side A, FLESHWITCH!, whilst Hostage Pageant is featured on side B with two of his pieces, Defective Strobe Lights, Quaalude Miasma. And yes, compared to the previous 2:00AM tapes I reviewed on Cobalt Mindwave this split tape is definitely really the Noise based one. There's no psychedelic lightness or modular synth quirkiness going on here, this pure harsh raw gritty Noise mayhem, but it's good Noise. Kylie Minoise's Noise (pun intended definitely) called FLESHWITCH on side A starts off this split in an appropriately radical way, with the sound of what sounds like Industrial equipment being turned on and blasting into the Noise murk. Kylie Minoise's piece is repetitive using Noise loops, plenty of pure classic Noise feedback sounds and messy filthy distorted stuff being thrown around, literally. So it contains all the ingredients you've probably heard before on other Noise tracks, but Kylie Minoise's piece got plenty of progression as well. Rather than aimlessly screwing around with the equipment, distortion and getting stuck in doing the same screeching noise twists all the time, Kylie mixes in percussion loops, music loops, some occasional shouted vocals in the mixture keeping things exciting and definitely doesn't dull you with any kind of unnecessary repetition. This is good Noise stuff, it keeps you on edge, focussed, and it's a pleasantly cathartic experience, although as always with Noise it's a kind of enjoyable listen to "endure" on your ears as well. Noise will always be loud and harsh, so be prepared before you start playing this tape. Hostage Pageant's Noise on side B is called Defective Strobe Lights, Quaalude Miasma (these are combined into one track in the download, which includes two fully labeled tracks encompassing side A and side B of the split tape). Hostage Pageant definitely goes for a much harsher kind of Noise with a choppier sound and admittedly the division between the two tracks is not very noticable to me. For the most part I liked his side, it's again very intense and contains quite a variety of sounds actually. Hostage Pageant switches between all kinds of completely indefinable sounds, buzzes, whirs, dirty distortion, screeches, delayed feedback and again also some random music samples. It's a rollercoaster ride of a listen, jumping on and on from sound to sound and the sounds themselves are definitely enjoyable, very cool. It's Noise but Hostage Pageant still brings us quite a variety of sonic textures. Only low point I found about Hostage Pageant's side is that he does return quite often to the same kind of piercing feedback sound that seems to be the "base" of his Sound Collage style performance, but it does make it ocassionally a bit predictable, making my attention dip a bit at those moments. Nevertheless, again a very thrilling enjoyable listen of sonic mayhem. Great stuff. In comparison I do find Kylie Minogue's side to be a bit better in its execution but overall both sides are definitely equally enjoyable and these two artists have definitely not been messing around here. This Kylie Minoise + Hostage Pageant split is a great but definitely harsh listen of a Noise tape. Other than 2:00AM's other tapes this one is really pure Noise, but the execution of the three pieces is thrilling and enjoyable over its 19 minutes. Never dull, always surprising, definitely give this sonic mayhem a listen.
