Hello! I have not posted a search for the LONGEST time but I have had an itching to add some new roleplays as of late. I am a 25 year old female from the UK and I am looking to write with people who are 21+ though 18+ is okay.

I can write anything from semi-literate (2-3 paragraphs) to novella (10+ paragraphs) but I am always a quality>quantity type of girl! The thing is, D&D is not a game.

I know that sounds insane, but hear me out: D&D is not a game, it is a games console. You don't actually "play D&D." You play "Dragon Heist" or "Tomb of Annihilation" or "Ghosts of Saltmarsh" or "your GM's homebrew campaign" or "the plot of Critical Role Season 1 reconstructed from memory" on D&D.

For quite a long while now - possibly literal decades - D&D hasn't even been the best games console, but it's been "the one everyone knows about" and "the one my friends have" and in fact it's "the one whose name is almost synonymous with the entire medium of TTRPGs," like how "Nintendo" or "Playstation" could just mean "games console" to people who didn't understand games consoles. They might not have heard of a "tabletop roleplaying game," but most people have heard of "Dungeons & Dragons."

For this extended metaphor, D&D is Nintendo back in the 90s, or Playstation in the 2000s. Sometimes you say "oh let's go to my house and play Nintendo" or "c'mon dude I wanna play Playstation" but you're not actually playing Nintendo or Playstation, you're playing Resident Evil or Super Mario Bros or Jurassic Park or Metal Gear Solid or whatever on a Nintendo or a Playstation.

Now, this metaphor is going to get even more tortured, but remember how when the PS2 and the original X-Box came out, they used a standardised DVD format, but the Nintendo console in that generation, the Gamecube, used discs but they were this proprietary tiny little disc format that they had control over? That essentially meant that it was really difficult to make third party titles for the Gamecube that did literally anything that Nintendo didn't want them to do, and also essentially gave Nintendo an even greater ability to skim money off the top of any sales?

So that must've seemed like a smart business decision in their heads. But the PS2 and the X-Box used DVDs. This was a standardized format which gave Microsoft and Sony way less control over who made games for their consoles, but that actually turned out to be a good thing for gaming, because it meant that the breadth of games that you could play on their consoles was massively increased even if some of them were games Microsoft and Sony didn't really approve of. (Also it's worth nothing that the PS2 and the X-Box could just play DVDs, which meant if your household was on a budget, you didn't need a separate DVD player - your games console could do it for you! This was actually a huge selling point!)

What Wizards are currently trying to do now is kinda-sorta the equivalent of Sony suddenly announcing that the PS5 will only accept a proprietary cartridge format they hold the patent on, will control the content of and charge money for the construction of. This possibly seems like it could be a moneymaker in your head because you hold market dominance (apparently the PS5 has 30 million units shipped compared to X-Box Series X 20 million units) and so many people make games for your console, but what it actually means is game devs and publishers will abandon your product. If it takes so much more work, the scope of what they're allowed to do is so much more limited and they're going to make less money off of it, they just won't bother. They'll go make games for the X-Box or PC instead.

To use another computer metaphor, D&D is Windows - it might not be the best system but it's the system most people are familiar with and so it gets the most stuff made for it, but there's is an upper limit on the bullshit people will take before they decide fuck it and get an Apple or learn how Linux works.

TTRPG systems are a weird product because you're not selling people a game, you're selling people a method to play a game. All the actual games are created by the community - even prewritten campaigns needs to be executed via a game master. Trying to skim money off the community will mean they'll eventually give up on you.

Since Wizards of the Coast is torpedoing all the good-will they have with DnD to wring more money out of it, I want to make a guide for people who recognize they should jump ship, but don’t know alternatives.

If you’re deeply invested in DnD and want something as similar as possible, Pathfinder 2 is what you want. It’s the next biggest game in the tabletop scene (in the US), you can find physical copies in stores easily, and Paizo allows free resources online to exist without constant threat of being taken down like WotC does. It will remain free to play on any VTT while DnD will require you to subscribe to their proprietary one.

Most importantly, though, it improves on almost every aspect of DnD. Combat and class balance is extremely well thought out and makes all combats engaging and difficult in a fun way, requiring teamwork and clever thinking. Roleplay is integrated into character creation and play better, and you no longer have to choose between being good in combat or exploration or roleplay, you get to play and feel useful during all aspects of the game. It’s hard to emphasize how much better it is without just playing, if you still want something like DnD, play Pathfinder 2.

If you like high fantasy adventuring but are willing to get more out there, Fellowship and Dungeon World are good options. Fellowship is a more free-form adventure game focused on creating a cinematic experience over getting bogged-down in rules-heavy play. If you want to play a Lord of the Rings style campaign and have it feel like the movies, Fellowship is the way to go.

Dungeon World is called “Powered by the Apocalypse” which means it was inspired by Apocalypse World, an amazing ttrpg that revolutionized the scene and became the gold standard for interweaving roleplay and gameplay. Dungeon World is meant to be a bridge between DnD and indie rpgs, and it’s good for that, though there are better PbtA games. It’s a good introduction to principles like failing forward and playing to find out what happens (and hell, a good introduction to games having principles lol). There’s also an Avatar the Last Airbender licensed PbtA game that’s very good, if that’s your thing!

Speaking of licensed games, Free League Publishing sets the benchmark for rpgs built for existing intellectual properties, and while I haven’t played all of their games, I’m a big fan of what I have played. They also have independent settings, like Twilight 2000, a really good apocalypse survival game set in a collapsing warfront between an alternate-history NATO and Soviet Union as the two dying empires bring all of society down in their death spiral. I’m using it as the base for my Halo rpg, it’s very good.

Blades in the Dark is another big name in the indie scene, and for good reason. It’s a heist game that has been adapted to lots of other settings (games that say they’re “Forged in the Dark” take inspiration here) and it’s clear to see why so many have used it as a foundation once you’ve played, it’s an exciting crime procedural where you play a group of scoundrels punching above your weight and facing the consequences

There’s a million other amazing rpgs I could mention here, and I’m sure people will talk about plenty of lovely ones I’ve missed in the notes, but I think the most important thing I want to convey with this is that there’s a whole world of diverse and interesting rpgs at all levels of production, from big corporate teams to one girl with a laptop who barely knows how to make a pdf, and there’s no better time to start exploring them.

A common refrain is that DnD can be modified to do anything, but once you’ve played other rpgs you’ll see why that’s not true, and why those creative efforts would be better spent in other systems. Hacking rpgs is as old a tradition as rpgs themselves, but if the only tools you know are DnD, you’re being limited with what you can create more than you could possibly know. There’s no better time to leave this Plato’s Cave and see the beauty and wonder of the whole ttrpg scene

Autistic Safe Spaces

If you own a business or a restaurant that serves the public, as the issue gets talked about more, you might be wondering how you can better help the neurodivergent community. Some places try to give spaces where autistic people can go to get their needs fulfilled, so if that is of interest to you, I've compiled a list of things we really enjoy.... made by an actual neurodivergent person.

NOTE: This is list is made by an adult, for adults and teens. The needs of children are slightly different, though similar, and would surely require a different list. 1. Silence - A lot of places, including malls, restaurants, and crowded stores, are overwhelmingly loud. The brains of autistic people process stimuli differently, and we can't "tune out" sounds in the same way neurotypicals can. Silence can involve the (seemingly) obvious things, like turning down music or reducing the number of people in an area, but a lot of things are loud to the point of pain that you might not think of, including metal silverware on ceramic dishware, shopping carts, doors opening and closing, and shoes on floors. A good rule of thumb is to think about how you would feel in a space if you had a migraine. This is easier in some places than others, but accommodations such as plastic dishware, softer floors, and carts left outside can make a big difference. 2. Stillness - I call the visual category stillness and not "blankness" or "simpleness" because that is simply not what I mean. A space can still be quite beautiful while not being overstimulating. We do not want ugly things, and you can still use style and color theory and design principles, but we do want walls without too much signage or distracting detail, floors and carpets without tightly repeating patterns or too much contrast (stripes and small tiles both bug me), and a visual block from the rest of the world, where things are moving like crazy.

3. Style - Because autism is often seen as a disorder than affects children, style can often be overlooked when designing materials and spaces for autistic people (although this, I would argue, is silly; many brilliant artists are / were on the spectrum, and a child, especially an autistic child, can enjoy beauty as much or more than you), and if you have the chance, I plead to you-- remedy this. Autistic people can appreciate detail and wonder in a way that is not concurrent with anything neurotypical people do, and along with having "icks", things we find particularly distressing, we also experience "glimmers", moments of unbounded joy over (possibly) seemingly ordinary things. I feel glimmers when shown any well-executed style; I feel glimmers in office buildings and abandoned neighborhoods and driving by courthouses... any style that is significantly different from my own, and significantly committed to the bit, so to speak, is a wonder to me. If you have the money and the resources, give us beauty, give us a an area that contains classy chic lounge or a medieval tavern or a vast, well-made mural of hyperfixations you polled from your own customers... pay craftsmen to give you a 20th century train station or a heist or an illusion floor in one area that looks as if dwarves are mining for gold hundreds of feet below you. You do not need to overwhelm us with detail-- this area need not be unusually large, or contain live-action roleplaying employees, or be loud or bright or over-the-top-- but you should also take the project seriously, bring people who love what they do and will truly take this opportunity with joy and a keen eye for style. 4. Solitude - I am a high-masking individual, which means that when I am being watched, I cannot "safely" relax; if you appear distressed, people sometimes talk to you, and ask if you are okay, which is a nightmare for me. I strongly prefer small, quiet spaces where I can be alone, about the size of a bathroom cubicle (which is where I do go to decompress a lot), where I can be unobserved and alone. It is a wonderful feeling-- it doesn't need to be (and shouldn't) be a perfectly soundproof room, but just somewhere I can be myself for a minute.

5. Snacking - Being autistic is exhausting. We process 42% more information than you all, and it really takes it out of us. Lots of people on all ends of the neurodiversity spectrum people have trouble waiting long hours between meals, but when a lack of snacks could mean a meltdown... please just let us eat our own food. At a sit-down restaurant, waiting for the food and not being able to eat anything until it comes is unbearable, I just get so hungry and frustrated, while being overstimulated and masking the whole time, and on top of that, because I cannot eat gluten, dairy, or much sugar / refined carbs, the appetizers are usually unappetizing or off-limits for me, and the food on the menu itself just as bad. I don't actually get much sustenance from meals provided and / or eaten in public, and a bit of acceptance around eating a couple pecans while you wait for you meal goes a long way. This is also true in stores, especially in malls, where food sold is usually not of much value to me, but there aren't great places to sit down and eat something. And, as a side note, if you want to sell food that appeals to people with autism, think Plain, Cheap, and Childish-- I mean this with absolutely no disrespect to autistic people, but I would never in a million years eat a fancy sharp cheddar (it tastes awful and gives me a headache), but I love the shredded colby jack from Costco. We like simple mac 'n' cheese, chicken nuggets, plain noodles, hot dogs... if a fancy chef would think it wasn't real food, it probably tastes amazing to us.

In conclusion: I don't know why I alliterated this list; I just started doing it, and I liked it. Many autistic people love life and everything in it, we just can't take it in all at once. Give us beauty. Give us the silence and stillness to appreciate it. And, overwhelmingly... leave us alone :). We love our solitude.

I’ve just rewatched & I need to get all my feelings about these ships out. I’m a multi-paragraph to Novella style writer who is literate and regular with replies so only looking for the same as I can’t currently vibe with a once every couple of days replier. 21+. I’m big on including side characters so be down to do your fair share so we can explore other relationships. I have no limits or triggers but will always respect yours, just so long as you’re equally interested in angst.

Plot ideas (I am open to anything so PLEASE FEEL FREE TO BRING ME YOUR IDEAS AS WELL! None of these are fully developed as I love plotting with my partner)

Berlin/Palermo

• Berlin returns after robbing the Mint as he makes it out (his illness isn’t as quick to take him over) and around the time that Rio is taken he goes to tell Palermo that they need to steal the gold. All about that gorgeous tension in a high stakes game. We can have scenes in the monastery as well as heist scenes!

• Palermo is in the first heist, meeting Berlin there for the first time. I’m thinking they have a bit of a FWB thing but Andrés never intends it to be anything more than that. Scenes in the Toledo House, possibly moving to the Mint eventually.

• College or HS!AU (18+ of course) with them meeting when they’re young. I love the idea of them meeting after hours when they both sneak in to steal exam papers or something. Proper bad boy/rich boy Andrés and nerdy but bitchy Martín. Would love to include the likes of Santiago, Jakov and Tatiana in Berlin’s crew and the rest of La Banda as well.

• Martín takes over the Estocolmo role of being a hostage in the heist, becoming useful to the team, falling for Berlin…

• Ghost/Coma/Just Like Heaven type story with Berlin as a ghost, haunting Palermo. He appears to him in the Mint - perhaps triggered by news of the robbery appearing on the television of his hospital room if we go down the JLH role - and being there with him through it.

• Law Enforcement / Criminal AU where Martín’s genius leads him down a different path. We can Have him take a negotiator role and stick with robbery OR we could even go for a Killing Eve style story.

• The robbery and time with Rafael but Martín is there too, tension between the two of them when Berlin is married, the addition of his son causing problems. Tatiana’s betrayal? All that stuff!

• Do you have any plots of your own? Please tell me! I’m open to any and all concepts.

Helsinki/Palermo

• I really like the idea of a post Heist type thing, with them trying to start a life together. This may go a bit stale so we can find ways to mix it up and create some action/angst etc in amongst all the fluff. I just really wanna see them go to the movies, lol.

• First Heist AU where Palermo is bought in too and initially tries using Helsinki to make Berlin jealous, but ends up falling for him somewhere along the way. I’m picturing them sneaking around like Rio and Tokyo did and how they were in the Monastery.

I had a couple ideas i’d love to share, one of them being that the heist at the end of the game went well, but Tommy senses danger with the two of them splitting up to go home so invites Paulie to stay the night with him. Thus avoiding any casualties! But because the don is going to come after them anyway, Tommy gives Sarah some money to run with the kid so she can live a normal life, and decides to stick with Paulie as they make a break for it too! They end up living that cutesy life Paulie was dreaming about with a pizza shop and realize they have feelings for each other as they try to navigate a normal life with a normal job, since they can only really confide in each other now.

Queen Mary and her Forty Elephants. They must be thieves — nobody has that much money to spend — but nobody knows from whom they steal. As you discover the key behind their impossible success, you attract the attention of greater parabolan forces and need to make a decision: Will you stop Mary and the havoc that she wreaks, or help her become who she is destined to be? This story will take you as close to the border between the Is and the Is-Not as you can get. Watch out or you will get your hands bloody.

Opening

News spread throughout London of an infamous gang of thieves, and the lavish parties they throw. Your best investigative skills are needed! Ultimately, you end up meeting their leader, Mary, Queen of the Forty Elephants. She is charming but ruthless, but you can convince her to take you with her on one of her heists.

After a successful heist (and another lavish party), you are approached by the person you stole from, and have to choose a side.

“Queen of the Elephants”’s opening tries to be inclusive, giving options to lawful aligned characters. But throughout the ES, you will, whether you want to or not, act like you’re a fixture in London’s underworld. If your character isn’t comfortable around criminals, especially the first half will feel extremely out of character for them.

Criminals on the other hand will feel right at home. Silverers as well — they get to apply their expertise multiple times here. And anyone with ties to the Red Handed Queen will get to interact with their idol, which in itself is rewarding enough. It offers very ruthless options which are rewarded, so if you’ve got an “evil-aligned” character, they’ll delight in this ES.

One path requires animal-cruelty, but the ES makes it very clear and lets you opt out of it.

Review

Ah, yes, the story of a queen who girlbossed too close too the sun…

After reviewing “The Pursuit of Moths,” “The Queen of the Elephants” is such a treat! Both of them are by Harry Tuffs, and “The Queen of the Elephants” has seemingly left behind all the issues that “The Pursuit of Moths” had.

Most of all the length. This ES is a chonker. It has four distinct acts connected by a lot of legwork in between. Even getting to the proper opening of the ES — the party — requires you to do several actions worth of detective work. Halfway through it splits down two paths, both of which are so distinct that they’d warrant a reset just to find out what the other offers.

The next big and noticeable strength of this ES are the various dialogue options. All ambitions except Nemesis get a tie in. Anything to do with the Red Handed Queen will give you incredibly satisfying options where your character gets to actually explain something to other people. And finally, Silverers get to feel useful for once.

These are all very nice (mechanical) things, but what about the story?

This story, in its essence, is about the Red Handed Queen. And that’s exactly how it feels while playing it. There are no characters for you to get overly attached to. Sure, Queen Mary and her main opponent are very memorable. Over time, they reveal their past struggles and you will feel sorry for them. But to me, they were never likeable. Which is not a bad thing! I will explain in a bit.

Because the character that actually shines in this ES is the player character. This ES offers so many choices and roleplay options, but also so many descriptions of your characters actions that it is as much about your choices as the choices of the characters. If you play the type of character who doesn’t have the most rigid of consciences. But hey. Us, who will not be caught Red Handed, rarely do.

From a lore-perspective, this ES explores the borders between the Is and Is-Not like no other. The entire conflict in both paths is about how characters’ choices influence Parabola and how it influences their real life. And about the Red Handed Queen. It’s about the Red Handed Queen. She appears towards the climax, and is only there for a brief moment, but man does she leave an impression.

Which brings me to the story’s conclusion. This ES on paper ends on a good note, but I never felt fluffy happy feelings about it. Rather, it leaves you a bit disturbed about the powers that lurk on the other side of the mirror. That’s why the dark-grey, not very likeable characters were actually a blessing. The conclusion was not per se satisfying, since it left some questions unanswered on purpose, but to this day, when I look at the story’s gorgeous art, it sends a shiver down my spine.

Community opinion is overwhelmingly positive. People especially loved the options it gives for “evil-aligned” characters to just be themselves, and my evil-aligned character would agree. That and the haunting ending.

All in all, this is a clear recommend for the right kind of characters. It’s got good writing (a lot of it), phenomenal roleplay opportunities and so much lore. A very loving four out of five, the one star missing because it’s clearly not for everybody.

Additional Thoughts (Full Spoilers)

My personal favourite characters this ES introduced where the forty elephants. An all female gang, and they’re cool af? Goals. I felt personally affronted by the gruff dude in the image of my Gang of Hoodlums, because now I can’t pretend that I took over the elephants. It’s the only thing I’m missing from this ES — an option to become their leader. That and, a little technicality: All my characters are male. So what? They can be female in parabola!

For some reason, I really love that this gang has been established to be all female twice. It doesn’t have a narrative purpose, it’s simply girl-power. In fact, I felt lowkey uncomfortable by the description of the mendicants beating up the elephants like I’m supposed to cheer for them. Fallen London is really low on sexism, but I guess my alarm-bells that I transported over from other franchises started ringing.

The split between following either Mary or the Miser is one of the best splits I’ve ever seen. These are two completely different storylines altogether. They recycle some bits and pieces for the mechanics, but use them so differently that I didn’t even notice.

The idea that Mary was chosen as a child is both tragic and interesting, since as far as I know, the Red Handed Queen doesn’t choose you, you choose the Red Handed Queen. But well. Maybe Mary has been more dedicated to herself than she thought even before she mantled the Red Woman. I wonder what her backstory is, but I’m also glad the ES doesn’t answer it for me. Gives me more room to think something up myself.

Another big point I enjoyed was how my character and me got to relentlessly simp for our Queen. As a player I’m very freaked out by her, but I love my character the most when he’s running around red-handed and having a good time while doing so.

Really loved it, but in an entirely different way than I loved “The Bloody Wallpaper” or “Caveat Emptor.” It’s disturbing. It’s dark. It’s London’s underworld mixed with the cosmogone light of Parabola.
