I miss his hands.

All of him, of course, but... his hands, the most. Who is Ethari without his hands, without the wondrous magics they can craft, without that tender placement of his gifts into your care?

If Ethari cares for you, it is impossible not to notice. Even for me, stubborn fool that I am. I am covered in proof of his love, from my horns to my heels. My husband loves me. And yet, here I waste, apart from him. Is there any elf more un-loved than one forcibly separated from his husband by cruel magic, taken so far that neither Moon nor craftsman can reach him?

And yet. In my heart, I know it still: Ethari loves me.

I know my own suffering. With every breath, I know it. But Ethari... does he not suffer more? Without the Moon, he cannot find me. He thinks me lost. (And lost I am, but not that sort of lost.) Surely, his heart struggles more for believing me gone. At least I know he lives, safe in the Silvergrove where none can harm him.

I must return to him. I must show him I still live. It is the only way to end his torment. There must be some way out of here, some way back. I need to find him-

But what to say, once I am there?

No. No mere words will suffice. Any trick can talk, any illusion can elucidate. I need something more. Something he will know immediately as me - the true me.

A kiss. No magic can replicate the way I kiss my husband. He would know me blind by the way I kiss his lips.

It's settled. I will find a way out. And then I will kiss my husband. And then he will feel better.

And then, finally, so will I.

Moonjournaling

It's warmer tonight.

Do you feel it, where you are? The gentleness in the air? A soft song, a hum of forgiveness. Or, perhaps an apology for the cold winter? I didn't mind the cold, so this night has no need to apologize to me.

I did miss someone to keep warm, though. I don't mind the cold, but I feel it more, now. That's one of the nice things about giving someone a gift, you see - there's always a bit of it shared back to you somehow. And keeping Runaan warm, well... I was never cold with him to hold.

We'd sit like this, usually at dawn, but other times too. Watching our little world from our porch. Even here in the most secluded little Moonshadow village in Xadia, there's a lot to see if you just wait for it to show itself.

Moon moths heading to bed. Elflings playing hide and seek down in the green. Me sneaking a sip of my husband's tea - again. (He never minded, but it was cute to watch him pretend not to notice when we both knew he absolutely did!)

I've no one's tea to steal now. Another bit of me that's gone cold, I suppose. Maybe I should get a nice long coat to stay warm. One that matches my scarf, of course. It would never do to be caught mismatched. How would-

Well, but that's so silly. I always think to myself, "How would Runaan know it's me if I change too much?" It's silly. But I cannae shake it. Not because I expect him to walk in the door and kiss me or anything. But because I'm still me, and Runaan's opinions still matter, even now. Especially now.

I'm the only person who remembers them. How else do I honor the dear one I've lost, than to remember what he liked? Ha - and what he tolerated for love of me.

If someone looking like my husband should ever walk back into my life by some miracle of the Moon, I'll make him tea and then steal it. If he pretends not to notice, well, then I'll know for certain, won't I?

Dear Moon,

It’s always nice to see your face again. There’ve been so many cycles recently when that’s the best thing I had to look forward to. And you’ve always been there for me. This humble craftsman has nothing but praise for your consistency!

I’m doing better this month, you’ll be glad to know. Started a new pet project - actually started, not just doodled bits and bobs this time! Still not sure I’m fit for commissions again, but maybe next cycle? Hope is good!

I had to start, you see - it’s a moon timer for the windowbox garden I cobbled together over the winter, and it’s just about time to plant. Just a little gadget that turns the boxes every now and again so the plants get all the moonlight they can. I think it’ll need a bit of leverage so the boxes can turn without dumping out or scraping the tree, but I’m confident. And lazy. Why go all the way down to the little old garden space out by the empty paddock when I can just lean out the window and clip myself some herbs and veggies?

…No, I know. This is just easier. And nutrition is important! 

You know he’d tell me so.
