Personal Statement
This is my mostly autobiographical, but partially fictional personal statement written as though I were in high school again, applying for Stanford, my undergrad. It is set in 2011.
—
Sis went to John Hopkins. When her acceptance letter arrived in the mail, mom cried because it wasn’t from Harvard. Sis ignored mom’s heartfelt congratulations and put the first fat green checkbox on the list of colleges she had applied to. Dad, whose most intimate display of affection ’til date was a pat on the shoulder, put an arm around sobbing mom and said: it’s okay, we have one more chance. I couldn’t look, but I knew they were looking at me. I was busy forcing an acidic geyser back into my stomach. I swear, I gave serious consideration to staying in our living-now-study-room, just to state for the record that we had not yet received any word from Harvard. But that would have just reminded them that I was uninterested in applying there anyway.
I’m not interested in college at all, in fact. If I had confidence that this world would accept me for who I was and what I could do, independent of who stamped a damn sheet of paper with my name on it, I wouldn’t go to college at all. But dad tried to put my idealism to rest, telling me that twenty years from now every software engineer like him would be out of a job, outsourced to India. Do you want to go to India? He asked me this every third dinner my sophomore year like it was a fact. My decision to major in computer science was doomed to be about as financially prudent as mom’s Mrs. degree in English Lit. It didn’t matter even if the sheet of paper was to be earned from the legendary Stanford. Look: we got our degrees from Seoul National University, the Harvard of South Korea, but dad was stuck at a decade old startup that had long since lost any conception of “start” or “up” and mom still didn’t consistently know when “a” or “the” was supposed to appear before her nouns.
I admit I’m an ungrateful child to two kind, loving, and capable parents who thought it was a good idea to prep a Harvard kid from what is now officially a desert, both in terms of rainfall and intellectual vitality. I grew up in Tracy. This Central Valley town is about as cringeworthy as its slogan “Think Inside the Triangle”, proudly splashed across the city website made by its one librarian. And inside the triangle I loved, because when none of your friends know what acronyms like AIME or ACT mean, high school is bliss. Expectations are below sea level.
But eventually, I learned that I was statistically 100 points disadvantaged at the SAT compared to the kids next door who grew up thirty minutes away in Livermore. To me, who was desperately trying to salvage my complete lack of reading and writing fundamentals, this sounded like a free hundred points my parents preferred to squeeze out of my blood, sweat, and tears instead of theirs. Dad even worked in Livermore for God’s sake! When I brought this up after dinner one night, Seoul-raised city dad gave me a pat on the shoulder. He told me that every year, the kid with the national highest score on the suneung, or the Korean equivalent of the SAT, always came from a shigol. Shigol means “a small rural town", but in this context, it translates into “bum-fuck-middle-of-nowhere”.
Fine. Ok. I was kind of that kid. I miraculously scored a 2360 despite my most desperate efforts to study less and spend more time with my music or my code, which let me tell you, was not easy, because software engineering dad did not like me coding.
I got into programming through my love for video games and my dad’s hate for both subjects. I was at a friends house in fourth grade, together doing insane twirls in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 when dad suggested that rather than playing games, I could make them. Of course, it was so obvious! With dad’s help, I installed Visual Studio Code 2003, the C++ SDK, plopped open an OpenGL book, and went to work. In retrospect, I’m impressed that I fought this thing for a whole year, eventually making something that resembled Astroid Blaster except with strangely colored squares, triangles, and circles that didn’t always collide correctly despite my self-taught geometry. Dad was a moderately helpful figure who would explain things twice and would then get frustrated when he had to explain for a third time that in order to rotate this square, I had to multiply a spatial transformation matrix to each of its coordinate vectors.
By sixth grade, I had graduated into a more efficient game development paradigm: “modding”. I went into the Starcraft: Brood War engine where rather than programming something from scratch, I simply wrote code that allowed me to edit how the game behaved. I made increasingly sophisticated games, moving to Warcraft 3 and eventually Starcraft 2, all hidden from dad, who believed that if I was going to be shipped to India, I should at least go knowing C++, not some useless scripting language for a video game. Mom didn’t really know what to think. I suspect she was not convinced I would be sent to India. Regardless, since this activity appeared substantially more productive than playing video games, she let me code after school until dad came home from coding all day at his C++ job at which point I had to stop coding.
I later understood dad’s love for me in all of this: he really just wanted a future for me where I wasn’t half as miserable as he was. And until about sophomore year, I admit I really didn’t have a plan for the future. I just did things… because. Maybe if I hadn’t flipped my life upside down, I really was going to end up in India. Thankfully, a really strange and upside-down idea in the shape of Ayn Rand flipped me inside out. Maybe I should value the energy, passion, and enthusiasm for the things I loved regardless of whether it’d send me to Harvard. Maybe this is what it meant to live. First on my list was music.
I remember coming back to my ninth year of piano lessons, telling my piano teacher Lauren that I was now really, I mean really, into Maurice Ravel. I opened the sheet music, its binding worn via repetition to the point where it would practically open itself to Une Barque Sur L’ocean. I had played this piece so many times on my Yamaha throughout that August, the whole month of “piano summer break”. Even my normally understanding Sis complained about the repetition. Lauren sat silent for a good long while after I had finished playing through it. I didn’t think much of it at the time, except that it was unusual for my normally critical teacher to say nothing. Two weeks ago, while writing recommendation letters for me, she told me that it was the moment I had graduated from being good at piano to being a pianist.
Piano became my emotional dictionary, spanning the sorrows of Ondine to the euphoria of L’isle Joyeuse. Mom even asked me if I would consider going to Harvard to study music. No, I told her, this is just something I really want to do. This badly? You do this just for fun? Yes, because this music expresses the joy and misery of being alive. Her confusion made me wonder if this desert town was truly hot enough to bleach any sense of purpose and identity.
I want to come to Stanford, not to escape this triangle, but to actually further challenge my flame for life. I have not come this far to imagine that I will encounter less adversity in my objective to pursue what I love. I want you to know that I will take no pleasure in the conformity of converting my soul into homework assignments, group projects, and final exams. I’ll major in computer science because I have to and refuse to take a class in music because I have principles. If you’re okay with that, please send me an acceptance letter. You’ll probably make mom cry, but don’t worry. We’ve all been through much worse.

As a pro translator to and from Finnish (a fairly small, non-Indo-European language) who occasionally deals with AI, or machine translation, let me expand a bit: first, some things aren't worth the cost of money and time of being translated by a human person, even a rank n00b, so before they didn't get translated at all.
Second, the "new jobs" are often proofreading machine translation, commonly called post-editing. This ranges from genuinely helping translators deal with masses of text and making reasonable money, to causing a giant headache for shit pay.
IMO translation really shows the strengths and failure points of large language models (LLM) commonly known as "AI"; to wit, they're really, really good at predicting the most likely outcome based on known data, with occasional randomness that sometimes produces a genuinely great solution, and they're absolute crap at maintaining a consistent terminology and cohesion within a text, they can't know specialised terminology if it hasn't been scraped, and they just cannot deal with cross-references to other documents (because they often treat them as text strings, so instead of copying the translated name of an EU Directive or its common abbreviated name, available online in all of the languages of the Member States, the machine makes up a new translation which may or may not lead the reader to the correct document...)
The worst part is when the machine is good enough to sound confident but keeps generating errors in meaning or references or consistency, because then you need to read things through more carefully than when proofreading the work of a competent human, so that in the absolute worst case you spend as much time checking as you would've spent on translating from scratch - for half the pay. In the absolute best case? You can do a quick read-through, make a few corrections and you're done.
Note that specially-built translation engines can be made to work with glossaries and specific references, but 1. those only make sense for things that already generate massive amounts of text, like the EU, and 2. they're harder to retrofit to generic translators like DeepL at least without specialised translation software, which is another beast entirely.
Also... the gig economy has been present in the translation industry since at least the 2000s, or from what I've heard, maybe 1990s; most of it is outsourcing. You either learn to be a business or don't make a living wage. Entry level has always been full of random people who get a decent grade in high school or study literature in university and think: how hard can it be? And then end up reinventing the wheel. (I did an MA in translation studies and have found it useful, though I already started working after the BA like many others.)
Uhhhh... where was I?
Right! Go ahead and use Google Translate or DeepL to understand what a foreign website etc. is talking about, or turn on the automatically generated and machine translated subtitles on YouTube. No human would be paid to translate those anyway, so why not use the service? Just keep in mind that they are based on probability calculations, and nobody has checked that the text makes sense and uses accurate specialist terminology, or tried their best to make it understandable to you (because ultimately, the translator's job is communication).
Eta: though the impact of AI on the next generation of translation students will be interesting. Any teacher worth their salt will hammer the need for a sanity check through their skulls, but will the political climate mean that funding for translation studies will dry up because "we have AI for that"? And what about the random people who enter the field with zero clue because it sounds easy, if they've grown up blindly trusting that ChatGPT doesn't lie? Now that will be interesting.
Eta2: important to note, I'm a technical translator, not a translator of literature, and also opinions on machine translation vary wildly in the field! Personally I think some texts are more suitable for machine translation than others, and it's not always the ones you'd expect that are a problem. Well, anyone would probably excpect poems being an issue - and translating those is more co-creation than anything anyway.
Alt text is so incredibly useful when it comes to speakers of other languages. I follow a bunch of fiber artists from different parts of the world, Ukrainian fashion designers and Chinese antique garment collectors and Iranian university professors of textile art history. There are discussions happening in different languages, and resources like books and scholarship, simply not available in the English or French I know.
And a lot of them never even use the Latin alphabet a lot of the time! So sometimes I can photograph a book page or screencap an Instagram story and get my phone's OCR to give me text to paste into Google Translate, and I can sometimes use a Cyrillic keyboard to type out what I'm seeing, but but as soon as something is antiquated or handwritten or viewed at an angle, my goose is cooked. I can't even get the original phrase to try to translate at all.
Unless there's alt text. Because alt text gives me exactly the data I need in the exact right format to take to a dictionary and get the gist of what's going on.
It makes me reconsider how my own content is accessible or inaccessible not just to blind or visually-impaired people, but people who aren't perfectly fluent in English. Because I and a lot of my friends are native English speakers who usually only speak 1-2 languages total, I'm prey to assuming that everyone in my intended audience is like us. That of course everybody can easily process English text, whether it's printed or written in cursive or using some antique calligraphic hand. And of course, that's not true. Now when I look at my analytics for my business's rare medieval name, I occasionally see translation site traffic where people in Farsi or Ukrainian or Chinese have translated me in return.
The curb-cut effect is a wonderful thing, I think. The primary reason I've used alt text is a good one, and it also turns out that it's really useful for a lot of other people too.
#ai tw#machine translation#sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't#knowing how LLMs work means I can't ever take anything ChatGPT says seriously#also specialist terminology isn't always in a scrapeable format#and a small language means the LLM has less language to build a model with#though for real before the issue was errors in paper dictionaries and no way to do research online#they legit used to recommend listening to foreign radio shows to get at least a little exposure#as a child of the internet age we have so much more practice in the target language it's unreal#you used to have to live years in a foreign country to get to this level (which would then affect your native language skills)#machines: great tools if used correctly#much like fire

How Translation of Technical Documentation Benefits Your Business
For businesses in Russia, перевод технической документации is of utmost importance. The difficulty lies in the fact that there are numerous technical terms, which are hard to make sense of - especially for a non-professional translator. Without correct translation of technical documentation, it will be difficult for businesses to perform their processes correctly, and this will have a negative impact on their bottom line.
The importance of proper translation cannot be underestimated, particularly when you are talking about documents such as safety standards, electrical safety, health, construction, industrial safety and more. Without correctly translated, you run the risk of harming both your customers and yourself - so this is an area that requires the services of a notary public. The Russian language is quite different from the English language, and this makes it even harder to translate legal documents or the latest scientific journals. A certified translation expert can help you achieve the best translations, ensuring that your documents are translated into the language that the people who will be receiving them speak, instead of speaking a different language.
There are many benefits of using a translator to provide you with professional translation of your documentation. In the case of safety standards, it is imperative that documents are translated into a language that is recognized internationally. Using a professional translator ensures that all aspects of the documentation are accurately carried out, and that the regulatory bodies' requirements are met. Your documents must be approved by both local and international governments, as well as regional and international standards. If you were to get professional help with translating technical documents, you can rest assured that your documents will adhere to these stringent standards, and will be perfectly tailored to meet the legal requirements. This translates to higher productivity, and lower costs for you.
Another benefit of using a translator to provide you with technical translation of technical documents is that your foreign partners will receive high quality services. As most technical documents have to be compliant with various national and international regulations, the final product is one that is in compliance with these guidelines. If your foreign partners receive high quality services, they are more likely to recommend you to their customers, increasing your reputation in the business. In turn, this can only be good news for your business.
The use of professional technical translation teams ensures that documents are produced in an accurate and timely manner. Because technical documents are produced using complex machinery and software, mistakes made during translation can have disastrous consequences for your business. Correcting errors in such documentation can have long-term effects on your business, diverting customers and delaying operations. Your employees may find it difficult to follow instructions if information is inaccurately translated. A highly skilled translator can work around the clock to ensure accuracy in your documentation. Your foreign partners will also be able to understand your documents in a language that is easy to comprehend.
Translation of documentation can be time consuming and costly; however, the results can be priceless. Professional translations not only make your documents more accurate, they also improve your customer relations and maintain good customer retention rates. Your business will benefit from the consistent quality of translations provided by top translators, which translate your information into the specific languages in which your target audience is most likely to speak.

Ultimate Ways To Make Real Sustainable Money Online.

Countless people dream of working remotely and making a living in the comfort of their homes. This is a reality that is achievable and accessible to anyone with the right tools, information, and the right mindset. With the Covid pandemic looming around and frequent lockdowns, working online can open doors to a successful career or a lucrative side hustle. The list below divides these online opportunities into four categories.- Career: These are proper jobs that require you to prepare a resume and cover letter. Just like any company, there is potential to grow, relocate, and have a fixed salary. - Top Tier: This includes jobs that have unlimited tapped potential. You can make as much money as you want and reach the level of success that you desire. It all boils down to your work ethic. - Mid Tier: These are jobs that require you to register with a platform or are extremely oversaturated and they might not have the same level of earning potential as Top tier jobs. - Low tier: These are low-paying jobs that can be easily considered side hustles. I wouldn't advise you to make a career or quit your job for low-tier jobs in this article. Please note: I absolutely hate Survey paying websites and any type of job that wastes precious time. Any job that pays unrealistic wages will not be included in this article. (There are too many websites that pay pennies or scam people.)
Become a Shopify Employee (Level-Career)

Shopify has grown to be one of the biggest players in the E-Commerce space. The company is featured as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers. It currently employs over 7000+ employees who mostly work remotely. In May 2020, Shopify transitioned to operating online permanently with all its employees.Shopify is one of the best tech companies to work for. Salaries range from $46,000-$210,000 depending on the position. Their lowest position, Customer Service pays around $46,000 which is way above the national average for a similar role. You'll also receive benefits such as $5000 to put towards your wellness/health account, retirement account, or charitable giving account. Other benefits include maternity and parental leave top-up payments; mental health practitioners benefit up to $2,500; stock options, and many more. This is a real job presenting the opportunity to make a career with a company that cares about its employees. And yes, they hire internationals too. Click the link below to check out their Job postings.
Start a blog (Level - Top tier)

Starting a blog is one of the best ways to make money online. There is no barrier to entry and the potential to make money is practically unlimited. Currently, the world has over 7.6 billion people and 65.6% of them have access to the internet. If you think blogging is a dead-end then you're in for a surprise. Like any other job, to be successful with blogging requires time and dedication. An updated article will be linked here to guide you on how to start a successful blog. In the meantime, these are ways you can monetize your blog.- Ads. You can run Google Ads or any other ads platform to showcase ads on your website. When people visit your website, view or click ads, revenue is generated. - Affiliate Marketing. Is a form of marketing that involves promoting a product and earning a commission when a sale is made. For example, you can join the Amazon Affiliate program, pick a product of interest and write an article about it. Amazon will provide you with a link that you can add to your blog. If a visitor clicks that link and makes a purchase, Amazon will pay you a commission. It's important to have useful good quality content to drive traffic to your website. - Sponsorship. A great way of boosting income on your website is to work with sponsors. A sponsored blog post is when a blogger gets paid to talk about a product or brand on their blog. The amount of money you get from sponsors will be determined by traffic and other factors. - Sell a product or service. You can sell e-books, online courses, merchandise, paid subscription service, or start a podcast.
Game development with Buildbox (Level-Mid Tier)

If you have a passion for making mobile games and you're lacking in the programming department, Buildbox allows you to make games in a drag and drop user interface. No coding knowledge is required to build amazing games that can take the internet by storm. Some of the best ranking games on Android and iOS were made with Buildbox. The platform is also extremely easy to use, even for beginners. Money can be made by selling games or monetizing with ads in the Appstore. Although game developers can easily make 6 to 7 figures a year, I classified this gig as "Mid-tier" because of oversaturation within the mobile gaming industry. To be successful, you'll need a good idea, a well-designed game with different levels, and SEO marketing skills(Note: There is alternative software like Unity, Unreal, Gamemaker, and many more that can be used to make mobile games.)
Amazon Mturk (Level-Low Tier)

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a crowdsourcing website for businesses and individuals to hire remotely located "crowd workers" to perform on-demand tasks. The amount you earn is proportional to how fast you can complete a task. Mturk is a great platform for making extra cash. I easily make $25-40 USD a day in my spare time.As a new Turker, you might not qualify for high-paying HITs. However, the more HITs you complete, the more work you'll qualify for. In addition, installing plugins and scripts such as Mturk Suite, Pandacrazy and others will massively boost your income. It's a must-have feature.Overall, Mturk doesn't offer the level of growth and the potential to earn is not up to par with other jobs on this list. Regardless, you can earn some extra cash.
Youtube (Level-Top Tier)

Youtube is one of those jobs that seem bizarre and unattainable. Similar to blogging, Youtube requires a lot of hard work, consistency, and dedication. However, the potential to earn is limitless.A lot of people fail with Youtube because they don't respect it as a job. Other people overcomplicate it and they fail to start. If you love creating content and you have a niche of interest, use your phone and just start. You can monetize your Youtube channel with ads, sponsored content, and affiliate marketing. Additionally, you can recycle articles if you have a blog and turn them into youtube videos. It's like feeding two birds with one scone.
Appen "Search Engine Evaluator" (Mid-tier)

Apply as a search engine evaluator at Appen. The job pays around $13/hr. A Search Engine Evaluator analyzes search results to ensure they are accurate and relevant. The job is fairly straightforward. (Note: Positions for this job might be full, so try to check out for any other open positions.)
Lionsbridge "Social Media Evaluator" (Level - Mid Tier)
Similar to Appen, Lionsbridge is a company that provides translations and localization solutions. A Social Media Evaluator's job is to ensure that a social network's newsfeed is relevant and accurate based on a given assignment. Wages range from $12-$15/hr. Lionsbridge also has other job openings that might be of interest.
Open an online business (Level-Top tier)

Many advantages come with running an online business. Depending on the nature of the business, there is more control, and operating costs will be lower than a conventional brick-and-mortar business. Check out these cool ideas on how to open an online business.
Dropshipping

Is a clever way of selling products that you don't own at a higher price. You won't have to store inventory or any products in physical form because when a customer buys from your store, their payment will automatically buy the product from a third-party store. Entrepreneurs usually pick and add products from Alibaba.com or any wholesaler of choice to their website. The next step is to set a reasonable price and drive traffic to your site. When a customer eventually buys a product from you, they're technically buying it from Alibaba or any wholesaler that you're working with.Countless people have made fortunes with this method, however, the market is extremely saturated now. Shipping costs, quality control, and low-profit margins are also factors to consider when launching a dropshipping website. The most important thing is to research a product that is in high demand but has low competition. That is the formula for dropshipping.
E-commerce website

Start an e-commerce business and sell practically anything. From clothes to furniture, anything can be sold online. You can also sell digital products such as software, music beats, or even services. There are many tools out there that you can use such as Shopify, WordPress Woocommerce, Squarespace, and many more.Choosing a niche is the most important step when building an E-commerce site. Your website will look professional and tailored to specific products. You don't want your website to compete with the likes of Amazon and eBay. Customers will rather use those instead. Specialize in something!
Affiliate marketing

Although this form of business is already mentioned, it deserves a segment of its own. Affiliate Marketing is the process by which an affiliate earns commission when they market a company's product. There are many affiliate networks that you can join with the most famous being Amazon Affiliates. Bluehost also has a great affiliate program that pays $65USD per sale. Shopify's affiliate program pays $58-$2000 per sale and Fiver pays up to $150 per new customer. This is just the tip of the iceberg as there are many affiliate programs that you can join. (Note: You don't need to have a website or a Youtube channel to drive traffic to your links, however, I would advise against that)
Amazon Arbitrage
Also known as retail arbitrage, is a method of buying items from different retailers and selling them on Amazon at a higher price. You can also buy items from Amazon and list them on eBay at a higher price. This Business method requires research and a good understanding of the product demand.
Start an agency.

- You can start a social media marketing agency where you help clients grow their businesses and reach more people. - If you know how to build websites or mobile apps, you can easily start an agency that provides those services to other businesses. - A travel agency can also be lucrative, especially if you know how to use social media effectively.
Fiverr
Is one of the best freelance marketplaces. The potential to earn is limitless. If you have any skills that can offer a service, customers will connect with you directly and pay you accordingly. Fiver also has a robust user interface that is easy to navigate and understand. It's definitely a great way to utilize your skills.

Afterthoughts from Re-wiring Distribution Networks
Last week, I had the privilege of joining my friend Karin Chien in a conversation on "Re-Wiring Distribution Networks" hosted by The International Documentary Association as part of their Getting Real Now summer series.
I'm excited to join my friend + award winning independent producer and distributor @producerkarin for a conversation this Thursday hosted by @IDAorg as part of their #GettingRealNOW series. RSVP in the link below in the thread. https://t.co/kgxPy9bA21
— Gary Chou (@garychou) August 26, 2020
A video should be posted on YouTube shortly for all to see.
Upon reflection, there were a few points I'd like to emphasize, if not re-state altogether:
Everything is changing. The installation of large-scale, ubiquitous, real-time information networks is the single most impactful development in our lifetimes. It's not just affecting distribution networks or business models, it's affecting society and culture. As such, it's worth thinking about the ways in which we, as individuals, need to change in order to adjust to this.
Attention is now the scarce resource. Advances in technology have lowered barriers to participation—which is great for everyone—but it also means that competition for our attention has never been greater. What used to work in a world of surplus might not be viable anymore. This is a good post to read for more background.
What are the networks that you need? You're going to need access to different networks of people for different things (i.e. your collaborators aren't necessarily your financiers or your friends or family). If you lack sufficient access to relevant networks, consider whether the immediate work you produce be something intentionally designed to help you gather the people you will need for your journey vs. focusing solely on your creative vision.
Signaling helps your network find you. If the network you need doesn't exist, you'll need to consider forming it yourself, through a committed, regular practice of signaling. What is something you can regularly and sustainably share that is of interest to those who are best positioned to support you? This could be as simple as starting a blog or newsletter, or it could be as elaborate as a speaker series or a club. As this is really hard work—particularly for creators who are under-networked—it's a prime opportunity for foundations, intermediaries and other support organizations to operationalize and/or specifically fund.
Collective action can take on many different (new) forms in a networked world. We're still in the early stages of understanding how to wield the power afforded by networked systems and there's tremendous opportunity for creativity here. In addition to Tracy Chou's work mentioned on the call, which resulted in greater transparency in the tech industry, there are other interesting collective efforts like the Letters for Black Lives project, which brought together hundreds of strangers to coordinate mass translation efforts; as well as efforts to include diversity riders in term sheets.
Q&A Redux
Finally, there was a question posed towards the end of the Q&A session that I'd like to revisit, as my initial response zeroed in too narrowly on the topic of online advertising, which wasn't really the point, and it's a rather pertinent question:
When we think of distribution, we usually think of mass, untargeted distribution always hoping to expand our audiences. Can the panelists talk about distributing to more specific, pre-inclined audiences but using the worldwide network afforded to us by the interwebs, perhaps akin to how big tech companies use granular algorithms to target ads?
Here's what I would have liked to have said:
I'd reframe this question slightly—instead of thinking about how the big tech companies have leveraged this infrastructure, I'd look at how tech entrepreneurs have adapted to the changes in the environment as a result of the installation of these networks (which are the same problems we talked about in the conversation).
What's changed for tech entrepreneurs is that there's now an abundance of:
free information and educational resources contributing to an increasingly global trained labor force
free open source tools and frameworks which make it easier and faster to build applications
easy access to cloud hosting providers which make it possible to deliver and scale your application globally and instantly
global capital willing to fuel new ideas, good or bad.
All of this has resulted in an unprecedented amount of competition (and innovation) chasing a limited amount of attention. Thus, the hard thing about building a software business is no longer the software, it's the distribution—how you get in front of people who are likely to want your product, and how you get them to pay while fending off all of the competition.
We've seen two different strategies emerge, which depend upon how well-funded a company is.
If you're immensely well-funded and you have a product or service with good unit economics (meaning that you make money on every sale, unlike Moviepass), you can afford to raise a lot of capital and spend it on online advertising to acquire customers, and then re-invest your profits into even more online advertising and continue to grow until you can't.
But, the majority of businesses aren't immensely well-funded and so they can't run this playbook and spend their way to success. So, they've had to adopt a slower and more modest 3-part strategy in order to grow:
Find or gather a community of people who you hope to serve, and gain their trust / get them to care about you.
Set aside your grand vision, and instead build something small and focused (commensurate to your cost structure), which is compelling for this community.
Collect and share stories of success from your community and repeat step 2, incrementally expanding the size/scale/footprint of your vision each time you do so.
The core difference between these two strategies is the order of operations. Rather than trying to find more people (i.e. customers) for your stuff, it's about building stuff for your people. In essence, the marketing comes before rather than after.
What this means for filmmakers is two-fold:
First, instead of targeting audiences after you've made your film, focus on gathering allies before and while you make your film. Having more allies doesn't guarantee you success, but it increases the likelihood of unlocking new resources and paths as you move forward.
This doesn't mean you need to become yet another ostentatious internet influencer or turn your project into a reality TV show, nor does it mean you need to take on a second job as a promoter or marketer.
There's always a story behind the film's story: who you are and why you're choosing to spend your precious time working on this project. Often, this story unfolds over the course of the project itself. And so, there's a lot of value to be had simply by adopting a practice of working in public—publicly sharing the exhaust of your process: your artifacts, your lessons, your story—and enabling people to learn along side you.
There are a lot of practical reasons that drive secrecy in filmmaking, but I'd argue that these only benefit the existing gatekeepers. And certainly, if you're asking about how to fully leverage the value created by this internet infrastructure we're all stuck with, the system is designed to favor openness. (Pre-internet, startups commonly embraced secrecy by working in "stealth mode", and this cultural norm has flipped as well.)
Second, create a space that is intentionally designed to welcome these allies into your circle and where you can sustainably keep them engaged over the long term. The simplest space is an email newsletter, but this could be something more elaborate like a club. Consistency is better than frequency, and ideally, there's an opportunity for your allies to see each other and not just you.
(If we stick with our example of a newsletter this could mean that you're not only sharing your thoughts and stories, but that you're also inviting them to contribute questions and comments, perhaps monthly or quarterly.)
There's a tremendous opportunity here to get creative, and while it may initially seem like an onerous chore by itself, in the context of your broader career aspirations, this will increase the surface area of your optionality so long as you continue to tend to your garden.
And so, rather than leverage this new internet infrastructure simply to target the masses in the hopes of consummating a transaction, I'd take advantage of its ability to connect people, globally, in meaningful ways at virtually zero cost to form new networks—or gardens—around you and your practice.
But it won't be an easy shift because done right, it will require a different way of working.
The upside, however, is the ability to change the equation in this discussion around re-imagining distribution networks (and models) from a conversation about what a collective of individual filmmakers can do to a conversation around what a cooperative of gardens can support and grow.

What was the Best Graphic Design Software in 2019
The graphic design process requires software tools that can provide solutions to real-time design problems. Ranging from free tools for a beginner designer to paid ones for a pro, you can find all sorts of tools to suit your design niche. If you are in need of any kind of design, a placeholder will do, but for anything beyond that you will simply have to dig deep to find the exact design software that fits your needs. From simple to complex and free to paid, here are some examples of the best graphic design software in 2019.
1) Adobe Illustrator CC
Image source: Digital Arts Online This program is Adobe’s flagship product, perhaps even more so than Photoshop. With hundreds of useful and imaginative options available, Adobe Illustrator allows you to create perfection down to the very last vector of every image. In fact, Adobe Illustrator is considered to be the software that most professional graphic designers use to create high-quality and complex designs. The main focus of Adobe Illustrator is to create pictures from scratch or edit one of the stock photos from its built-in library. More importantly, Adobe Illustrator receives two major updates a year, offering 100 GB of cloud storage with the subscription. Why choose Adobe Illustrator? Adobe Illustrator is a great graphic design tool that doesn’t have a 100% compatibility with other software outside the Adobe software suite, a.k.a the “Creative Cloud”. While Adobe Illustrator is perfectly usable on its own, it truly shines when coupled with the rest of the Adobe graphic design tools. If you’re planning on using other Adobe tools or already are, definitely use Adobe Illustrator to maximize the compatibility synergy. Pros: Supreme precision Professional results Synergizes with other Adobe tools Cons: Subscription based, costing $20.99/month Not 100% compatible with non-Adobe products
2) Adobe Photoshop
Image source: FileInfo The classic and one of the most well-known graphic design software out there, Adobe Photoshop was initially created in 1988 and has been steadily improved since. The software mostly deals with raster images, which are those that are made using a pixel-based program or a digital camera. Professionals wanting a smooth blend of photorealistic elements would definitely want to pick Adobe Photoshop. The various intricate shadow and color manipulation options enables you to take any number of pictures, perfectly splice them together, and achieve something that looks completely real to the point that today, there’s even a verb created out of this which is “photoshopped”. Why choose Adobe Photoshop? The biggest advantage of Photoshop is in its wealth of options and how well they’re documented. Thanks to Photoshop’s popularity, there’s literally hundreds of tutorials and walkthroughs for any given option to help ease a newbie into becoming a graphic design pro. While there is still a learning curve, it’s easier than ever to get into Photoshop and become a pro at using it, which is considered to be a skill in its own right. Pros: Extremely well supported Most compatible graphic design software on the market Professional-quality results Intricate graphic design options Best suited for photorealistic (raster) images Cons: Subscription based, costing $20.99/month Requires some learning
3) Pixlr
Image source: Chrome Web Store In 2019, browsers have become better than ever before. They are versatile and have moderate hardware requirements, allowing them to do everything except graphic design; for that, you’ll also need to use something like Pixlr. Serving as an internet-based collection of graphic design tools, Pixlr allows anyone to jump right in and start creating wonderful graphic design content using only a browser or Pixlr app within seconds. From taking a screenshot to editing and downloading it, Pixlr covers all the basics of capturing photos and editing. Why choose Pixlr? The biggest advantages of Pixlr are the mobility and immediacy it affords. By using only a browser (or app for mobile devices), you can edit, save, and continue editing on the go whenever you’ve got a few minutes of spare time. Professional graphic designers tend to pack it for travel because they can’t work without their special hardware. Hence, Pixlr allows for a very convenient and lightweight work schedule that adapts to you. Advanced Pixlr editor costs $5/month but also reveals its biggest downside – the dearth of options in the free version of Pixlr. Pros: Low hardware and software requirements Free Beginner-friendly Cons: Not suitable for detailed, in-depth work
4) Sketch

Image source: PC Mag Some graphic design projects are so complicated that they require an entire team to complete. That’s where Sketch comes in. Focusing on collaborative solutions, Sketch allows an entire team to coordinate and stay up-to-date through innate Sketch tools while still being a highly competent program for graphic design. Why choose Sketch? In a large organization, it’s hard to keep track of who’s doing what and when. Using Sketch Libraries, the entire company can be on the same page, with designers having a consistent style and managers able to keep track of the progress and make sure everyone is synchronized. Even better, Sketch also works with Dropbox and GitHub. Pros: Contains collaborative tools Free trial Cons: Only available on Mac Not ideal for a single user
5) Inkscape
Image source: Techworld This is a free graphic design tool that can be used for vector-based images. Like other free solutions, it is supported by the community, often leaving you to scratch your head if you were to get stuck on it. If you have any questions, you are meant to engage with the community until you find the answer you were looking for. Inkscape is a welcome addition to the graphic design market, mainly because by using it, we support the idea of free software. It is free both in terms of it costing $0 and it not being constrained by anyone. Why choose Inkscape? Inkscape is an open source, meaning that everything surrounding its functionality is under public scrutiny. You could, in theory, check out the code used to create it and tweak it to your heart’s desire or make your own version of Inkscape and sell it for profit. There is no company lording over how you should use Inkscape – it truly is a free and flexible graphic design tool. The idea of building a community through joint effort is present in every aspect of Inkscape. In fact, users are even able to contribute to translations and write help articles for the program. Although Inkscape is close to being completely finished, it is still considered to be a program that has quite some bugs and quirks you’ll have to find workarounds for. Pros: Free Open source Has a community built around it Cons: Lack of professional support Still in beta as of October 2019
6) Apple Motion
Image source: Larry Jordan More and more static content is being woven together into animations and hosted on video platforms. In cases where you want to rehash and reuse static graphic design leftovers to create an animation, Apple Motion will be a suitable choice. Why choose Apple Motion? Animations and animated transitions are the forte of Apple Motion. The program is well-stocked with pre-made effects that make it easy for anyone to ‘drag & drop’ their way to glitzy and shiny animated content made out of scraps. Pros: User- and beginner-friendly In-depth controls for nuanced effects Cons: Only available on Mac
7) CorelDRAW
Image source: PC Mag Clean, professional, and detailed – those are the main attributes of CorelDRAW. Using the symmetrical drawing function, you can produce mirrored images of anything you draw and edit them however you see fit. From tiny details to massive projects, CorelDRAW does everything a professional graphic designer could ever want a software to do. However, learning how to handle the wealth of options it offers is another challenge for a beginner graphic designer. Why choose CorelDRAW? CorelDRAW is an extraordinary tool with a price to match it. If you’re designing the most intricate and complex graphic designs out there, CorelDRAW is truly one of the best and most reliable software solutions to use. For everything else, there are cheaper and more accessibles programs out there that will do the job just fine. Pros: Interface compatible with touch devices Scalable graphics engine allows adding tiny details to massive projects Produces results of professional quality Cons: Price Steep learning curve
8) Affinity Designer
Image source: AppKed Affinity Designer is a graphic design tool capable of producing designs of sublime quality. You can zoom in and out to your desire, allowing you to screen the details or take a look at the larger image. From miniature designs to massive projects, Affinity Designer can handle it all, provided that you have the hardware to match. Why choose Affinity Designer? Affinity Designer excels at producing otherworldly, creative art that’s inspired by meditation and religious works. If you’re the type of designer that isn’t content with fiddling with stock photos, give Affinity Designer a spin and see what you end up with. Pros: Realistic shadow editing Layered editing One million percent zoom Cons: Hardware requirements
9) Canva
Image source: Canva If Pixlr is too complicated for you, luckily there’s Canva for you to use. With simple graphic design options, Canva isn’t meant to compete with the likes of Adobe Photoshop. However, it merely provides the bare minimum of utility for any user, even those with very little to no graphic design experience, wanting to start their own business or print out a graphic design without having to call anyone to walk them through it. Templates automate the design process even further and now graphic design is doable with just the simple use of a mouse. Why choose Canva? Canva has a clean, minimalistic interface and options to match. There’s not much depth in Canva but that’s actually perfect for senior users who might get flustered encountering the wealth of editing options in a more professional editor. Pros: Perfect for layman users Free Cons: Requires an internet connection
10) Adobe InDesign
Image source: All PC World This is another one of Adobe’s products with the same monthly subscription but a slightly different toolset. It is mainly used for print and publishing design, such as books or any other document that contains multiple pages. The interface is balanced and smartly adjusts to the user’s needs, providing them with contextual information on the go. Plus, the main benefit of Adobe InDesign is that it provides a comprehensive overview of the project, allowing you to troubleshoot problems before you send the file off for printing. Just like with all other Adobe products, you will be nudged towards buying as many other Creative Cloud programs as possible since they all coordinate seamlessly. For example, it’s possible to get the entire Adobe font library within InDesign and then have specific fonts from it used across the entire project done in other Adobe software solutions. Why choose Adobe InDesign? Complex publishing graphic designs that have an intricate structure or layout will be those that will benefit from Adobe InDesign the most. The more different parts there are in the project, the more work there is to be done when changing anything. Thankfully, InDesign allows you to view the entire project at once to find out what should be changed and where. Changes and adjustments become a breeze when InDesign is involved. Pros: Integration with other Adobe products Huge font selection Overview and easy adjustment of the entire project Cons: Subscription based, costs $20.99/month Some features are still barebones
11) Xara Designer Pro X
Image source: Magix Different stages of design might require changes to be made to its parts or the entire project while still maintaining the color and font. Changing individual elements in the projects while keeping its integrity will require a special type of graphic design software, and this is where Xara Designer Pro X comes in. Xara Designer Pro X comes with over a million stock photos and templates. Why choose Xara Designer Pro X? This is one of those software products that attempt to be a single solution for all your graphic design needs, and when it comes to desktop publishing, Xara Design Pro X definitely succeeds. This is quite a capable tool that can equally handle both raster and vector images with ease. However, it can also output documents, images, or even entire HTML websites. Pros: Extensive templates library Available on Steam Cons: Pricey at $299 Windows only
12) Gravit Designer
Image source: Gravit Designer In some instances, you simply can’t do without Windows but that’s an operating system that does become oppressive after a while. The ideal graphic design software would thus allow you to skip and hop from one operating system to another as you please, maintaining all your projects in sync. Gravit is one such cross-platform graphic design solution meant for professionals. Why choose Gravit Designer? Precision vector tools in Gravit Designer make it a child’s play to make creative, dreamy designs out of any shapes and colors imaginable. You can create all the print and digital designs for a product from start to finish, including stationery and app UI. A neat feature of Gravit Designer is the ability to import an image and turn it into a set of fully editable vectors. Pros: Trial and free version Cross-platform Flexible vector editing options Cons: Subscription based, $49/year Read the full article

The Best Learning Management System Plugins for WordPress
Technology has completely transformed how we learn and how training is delivered. Physical presence in a physical location is no longer necessary. Technology has not done away with the instructor or the student though. Instead, it has made how and where we access and interact with learning material easy, dynamic, and flexible.
In fact, it has made instructor-to-student and student-to-student interaction more dynamic. Students learn from each other because there is greater collaboration between students.
Training is now commonly delivered and administered through learning management systems. Lessons are created and uploaded on these systems and can be accessed anytime, anyplace. Learning can happen by from desktops or mobile devices, from websites and apps.
In this article we will explore WordPress learning management systems (LMS) plugins.
Let’s get started.
Why is eLearning Popular?
The future of learning has been with us for a long time now. Learning accessible from anywhere anytime, at your own pace, using wide variety of devices from desktops to tablets to mobile phones. Learning delivered by systems that host large directories of courses. These large directories of e-courses utilize learning management systems.
As a result, there is an explosion in learning. Online learning platforms have responded to users educational needs and preferences for learning anywhere anytime by using responsive websites and apps. This makes sense since over 70% of users go online using mobile devices. And 90% of users spend their time in apps.
Many companies have also embraced online training for their staff. Some deliver their training to an externally-managed platforms that their staff can access. They don’t get involved in running the platform. Other companies have their own self-hosted learning management systems where they create, manage, and deliver training content.
The upside of this is saving on the logistical costs of planning location-based training or seminars for hundreds of employees.
Online learning platforms are very popular and profitable. If you want to get in the game so you too can host courses, or if you’re a company thinking of hosting your own training, or a developer tasked with implementing learning management infrastructures for your clients, then WordPress is your ally.
The fact that WordPress is a content management system makes it a perfect foundation on which to build learning management systems. It has a powerful and stable base, and its functionality can be extended a thousand fold through use of plugins.
But building learning management systems from scratch is extremely costly. This should not dash your hopes of managing your own self-hosted learning management system.
Here is where learning management systems (LMS) plugins for WordPress come in. There are developers who have specialized in catering specifically to this niche.
What is a Learning Management Systems Plugin?
A learning management systems plugin is a cloud-based software that delivers online learning. It allow instructors to create, manage, track, and deliver learning content or e-courses.

Administrators can manage different learners, teachers, and take care of other administrative tasks from the LMS dashboard.
Teachers can access tools for creating courses, quizzes, grading, and uploading.
Students can select what they want to learn from the directory and immerse themselves in learning.
Components of Learning Management Systems
An LMS is made up of many components enable different users to achieve their objectives.
Automated Administrative and Communication Tools
Communication is key to any successful venture. Automating communication takes a load off administrators’ shoulders. Communication to teachers and students can include notification about accounts and payments, email reminders, weekly course summaries, real-time onscreen progress indicators for each and so on.
Administrative tools include tools for registering teachers and calculating teachers commissions,
Diverse Course Options
An LMS should combine different learning methods. For example, learning content can delivered via audio, videos, powerpoint, multimedia, written text, games, social learning, and more.
Course Content Creation Tools
An LMS comes with built-in authoring tools that allow for easy creation of course content.
Engagement
Chats, forums, and other kinds of online community software tools integrated into the LMS offer opportunities for students to engage with their peers. They are not limited by location. They can collaborate on assignments and projects.

Instant Feedback
Teachers can give learners feedback to show them where they need to improve.
Grading and Scoring
Allows yracking student progress and performance over the duration of the course.
Certification
An LMS should come with the ability create certificates for students that complete a course.
Reporting
Gives you access to data like number of students taking a particular course, individual reports for each student, and how much time students spend on each lesson and quiz.
Feedback
The only way to improve is through user feedback. An LMS system should offer tools for gathering feedback and suggestions from students and learning what they think about the quality of the courses and the system itself.
Reviews
An LMS system should offer students tools to review and rate their learning experience for courses. This will be helpful for others who want to take the course.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Learning Management System
Ease of Use
A user-focused LMS system should be intuitive and simple to navigate and customize.
Compatibility With Mobile Devices
80% of users go online using their mobile devices and prefer to use them for everything including learning. LMS should have companion apps in iOS and Android.
Monetization
A good LMS should offer different payment models like:
one time payment
subscriptions for regular access to courses
course bundles
coupon codes
discounts

A WordPress LMS system should integrate with software you already use like CRM software, accounting software, and more.
In addition it should be able to integrate with:
payment gateways like Paypal, Stripe, or 2Checkout
email marketing gateways like MailChimp
eCommerce plugins like WooCommerce, or Easy Digital Downloads
Multi-Language Support
If you want to offer online courses to a wider international audience your LMS plugin should offer translation support files.
Regular Updates
When bugs are left unattended they make the system vulnerable to attacks. Regular updates mean the system is reliable and secure.
Security
Users want to know that their personal and financial data is safe.
Reviews
Consider seriously what other users have to say. Users trust the word other users. They have used the system and seen how it works and what its strengths and weaknesses are.

Facts, Fiction and Ukiyo E Print Art
Students should view prints and finish the worksheet. Even though the labels are a rather small portion of the packaging, the materials used can play a critical part in the recycling procedure. These receipt templates are simple to download and print.
The Definitive Approach for Ukiyo E Print Art

Opening Gambit (Final Rose/Gate)
Taren’s brows furrowed. “Easy there, buddy.”
Fury slowed to a stop as the two of them eyed the carnage ahead. Bodies littered the hillside. From the looks of them, they’d been dead for at least a day or two. More troubling, however, were their armour and weapons. Climbing off Fury, Taren knelt and picked up a sword.
“This is steel,” he murmured. He lifted his scroll and scanned the weapon. “And old-fashioned steel, at that. We haven’t made steel this way in centuries.” He walked over to one of the bodies and peered at the armour. “Segmented armour. Nobody has used that in centuries either.” He reached out with his senses. “No traces of residual Aura either.”
Fury gave a low rumble. “Kweh.”
“Yeah. Grimm did this.” Taren used the spear form of his weapon to turn over a nearby body. “See those? That’s the work of Beowolves.”
“Kweh.”
Taren blinked. “What?” He followed Fury’s gaze and stared. There was a… wyvern amidst the carnage. It had been ripped to pieces, but it looked like something out of a fantasy novel. “We don’t have wyverns on Remnant,” he said. “None of this makes sense.”
“Kweh kweh kweh.”
“All right.” Taren got back onto Fury. “Let’s keep going. I’ve got a strange energy signature up ahead.”
Taren made sure that his equipment was recording as he gazed upon the strange, massive arch that dominated a clearing in the middle of the forest. He’d passed this way almost five years ago. There had been nothing like it then, so either he’d somehow managed to miss it, or someone had built it recently.
“Kweh.”
He patted Fury’s side. There were people here. They looked like soldiers of some kind. They’d set up makeshift fortifications around the arch, but it was clear they were struggling simply to hold on. They wore the same armour and used the same weapons as the bodies they’d passed earlier, and the majority of them were in terrible shape. Given the Grimm he’d noticed gathering nearby, he doubted they’d last more than a day or two at the most.
However, his musings were interrupted as more people appeared from the arch. No. His jaw clenched. That wasn’t an arch. It was a gateway. But where did it lead? He doubted it was to anywhere on Remnant. None of these people had Aura, and he’d never met anyone on Remnant who didn’t have at least a little bit of Aura.
It was a good thing this gateway had appeared in the middle of nowhere. These people, whoever they were, had arrived armed to the teeth. If they had appeared near a settlement, it was possible they might have attacked it. Out here, though, in the middle of the wild, they only had the Grimm for company.
“Let’s get out of here,” Taren said to Fury. “We need to let everyone else know about this.”
“A gate to another world?” James Ironwood growled. “Are you sure?”
Vanille sighed. “I’ve been over all of the footage and data that Taren was able to record. I think that’s what we’re dealing with.”
“As if we needed any more problems,” Ironwood covered his face with one hand. “We have Grimm and now invaders from another world?”
“We don’t know if they are invaders,” Ozpin pointed out.
“Look at the footage!” Ironwood gestured at the hologram. “They came armed to the teeth. Does that look like a diplomatic party to you? The only reason we don’t already have casualties is because that gate of theirs opened up in the middle of nowhere.”
“Their technology is noticeably below ours,” Vanille said. “They’re using swords, crossbows, that sort of thing. There isn’t a single firearm amongst them although some of the footage does show strange marks, possibly some kind of energy-based abilities.”
Lightning folded her arms across her chest. “They’re clearly not used to fighting Grimm. Based on the footage Taren gathered, their defensive formations and fortifications are all wrong. They’re set up to fight people, not Grimm.”
“We have to seize control of the gate,” Ironwood said. “If it really is a gate to another world, we cannot afford to let it remain in the hands of a potential enemy. Once we control both ends, we can worry about establishing contact.”
“I’m with Jimmy on this one,” Vanille added. “We don’t know what or who is on the other side of that gate. Our best bet - our safest bet - is to take the gate, both sides, and fortify it as much as possible. If they’re peaceful, then that’s fine. If they’re hostile, it’s better we face them there than let them establish a foothold here.”
“Indeed.” Ozpin steepled his hands together on the table. “I shall advise the Vale government accordingly, as well as break the news to our other associates. A unified response will be necessary. Still, this could prove to be a great boon to us.”
“We could have allies,” Ironwood said. “Or at the very least, an entire world of additional resources to harvest for our war against the Grimm.”
The Expeditionary Force under the command of Lightning arrived at the gate only a week after Taren had returned to civilisation. It consisted of ten thousand infantry troops with additional mechanised units and robotic support units, along with one hundred huntsmen and huntresses. Prior capture and interrogation of enemy soldiers by Jihl and her elite forces had revealed their objective: to conquer Remnant and subjugate its people.
They arrived to find the gate in the hands of the enemy who had reinforced it with enough troops to repel the Grimm, albeit with heavy casualties. With air support, the Expeditionary Force crushed the remaining Grimm forces and advanced on the gateway.
It was at that point that things took a turn for the worst.
When Lightning sent a messenger to offer parley, the enemy responded by opening fire on the messenger. When her second and third attempts were met in the same way, Lightning concluded that Jihl’s analyses were correct and that the enemy were indeed hostile and ordered her troops to return fire.
The enemy had established fortifications using wood, stone, and local materials harvested from the forest. Lightning had, under her command, one hundred tanks from Vale’s military, each of them designed to fire ammunition powerful enough to kill or at least injure large Grimm.
It wasn’t even a fight so much as it was a slaughter.
Within moments of opening fire, the tanks had levelled the meagre fortifications of the enemy. Combined with artillery and air support, the enemy were soon in complete retreat. Lightning ordered her infantry to advance. Any who surrendered were taken into custody. Any who refused to surrender were put to the sword.
It was ruthless, but the advanced translation software that had been deployed by Vanille, Raine, and Diana had already started puzzling out the language of the enemy. Mercy was one thing. But mercy for a force that had come to conquer was quite another. She and the others had not fought to protect the world from Grimm only to turn it over to invaders. Added to the information Jihl had personally extracted from the minds of captive enemy soldiers, the conclusion was incontrovertible.
With the enemy on one side of the gate defeated, Lightning ordered an advance, spearheaded by the robotic units and drones. Travel through the gate revealed further enemy fortifications. Here, the drones proved decisive. Designed by Diana, the hunter-killer drones were purpose built to engage swarms of Grimm by deploying cluster bombs and shrapnel-based aerial explosives.
Against huntsmen and huntresses with powerful Auras and state-of-the-art equipment, or against the mechanised forces that had become increasingly integral to Remnant’s armed forces, such weapons would have been of limited effectiveness. Against the relatively lightly armoured troops of the enemy, however, they were devastating.
Within minutes, the drones had turned the entire enemy camp on the other side of the gate into a storm of shrapnel and fire. As the onslaught receded, Lightning’s armour - tanks and mechs - advanced, forming the tip of the spear that shattered the enemy’s tattered defences. Behind them were her infantry, methodically crushing the enemy’s formations and morale with their steady, relentless advance.
At the same time, elite teams of huntsmen and huntresses were deployed to harry the enemy’s retreating forces and to capture enemy commanders and key personnel. Within hours of commencing the assault, Lightning’s forces had complete ground and air command of the other side of the gate and its immediate surroundings.
Lightning estimated that the enemy had sustained no less than forty-thousand casualties. With the enemy in full retreat, she turned her attention to fortifying her position. With the use of robotic labour and Semblances, a gigantic fort complex was established that consisted of four layers of defences that were not only manned by her human and Faunus forces but also by more and more robots, drones, and other automated auxiliaries.
With control of both sides of the gate established, further forces were deployed to ensure Remnant’s forces maintained complete ground and air superiority. The deployment of satellites followed soon after with satellite imagery being used to provide detailed maps of the surrounding area and the deployment of enemy forces.
It would take almost a month before the first enemy forces began to gather for a counter strike. Lightning watched them arrive from deep within her fortifications. Given what she had at her disposal, she almost pitied them. There were at least a hundred thousand of them, but she doubted they would even get so much as a single shot off before they were cut down by artillery, machine gun fire, lasers, and whatever horrors her drones and robots could unleash.

Seasonally Appropriate, part I: A Long Look at Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

So it's Halloween season, and I thought maybe it would be interesting/entertaining for me to tackle some themed content. So here we go.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
There are few video game series that so clearly fit the season as Castlevania. A series that usually has Dracula as its final boss, with any number of mummies, werewolves, and Frankenstein's monsters prior to the ultimate showdown with Bram Stoker's Wallachian sensation, there are few that are perhaps a better fit for the season. And this is just a small sample of the horror and horror-adjacent enemies (we've also got your standard zombies, ambulatory skeletons of varying sizes, gargoyles, giant bats, and giant spiders, gorgon heads, Medusa herself, and even the grim reaper).
But despite the parade of classic horror monsters, Castlevania has never really been scary. It's really always been more of a sort of horror fantasy than anything.
Most installments prior to Symphony of the Night featured you playing as a muscular hero who is the latest scion of the Belmont clan, a powerful, nearly barbarian folk whose sole heirloom appears to be an enchanted chain whip (with a spiked morning star on the end) which is consecrated for killing vampires and other creatures of the night. It's a good thing they have it, because Dracula, in life an evil sorcerer, and in death the king of vampires, seems to come back to life every century. Sometimes this happens on its own, sometimes he's resurrected by various disciples.
Listen, the lore here is neither deep, complex, nor consistent. Anyway, Symphony of the Night marked an interesting fork in the series development.
Let's look back for a minute at the mid-90s.
More below the cut.
It was the dawn of the fifth generation of video game consoles. Sony's PlayStation, Sega's Saturn, and Nintendo's N64 (the three consoles of this generation that mattered, and that are worth remembering as more than a footnote) were collectively the vanguard of 3D graphics in game design. Blocky and pixellated as a lot of those games look, believe it or not, it was an exciting time to be into video gaming. Boundaries were being pushed. New genres (such as survival horror) were being invented. And many developers were struggling mightily to find ways to translate their existing franchises into three dimensions.
TV Tropes refers to this phenomenon as the Polygon Ceiling. Some series, such as Final Fantasy, had a relatively easy, painless transition into 3D. In fact, RPGs broadly speaking weathered the change with few growing pains, if any. The main reason for this, I think, is simply that the mechanics that defined an RPG had very little to do with how those kinds of games were presented, in terms of graphics. The switch from 2D to 3D didn't really change anything about the essence of an RPG, and in most cases was actually beneficial.
The same was not true of more action-oriented titles, such as Mega Man, or Contra, or Ninja Gaiden, or... well, Castlevania. For an RPG, the way a player and the player's character(s) interacted with the world was fairly rudimentary, and the specifics were largely (in most cases) inconsequential. But in an action game, the player's interaction with the game's world is everything. Running, jumping, shooting, slashing, exploring, commandeering vehicles... The feel of these things was every bit as important as how they looked. And the specific details of the mechanics were important. Does the character have a life bar, or do they die in one hit? Can they control their jump mid-air, or are they committed once they launch themselves? Is the game a side-scroller, or a top-down action game? Is there a lot of jumping and verticality to the environments, or is it largely a horizontal affair? And so on, and so forth.
The transition to 3D presents a couple of problems, then.
Problem one is a pet theory of mine: 3D gaming compels a certain adherence to reality, at least notionally. I think that, subconsciously, players are better able to accept the more abstracted characters and environments of a 2D game because its nature as a 2D game means it is not operating in a space the player can recognize as real. So the abstractions – things like floating platforms, massive leaps, double-jumping, etc. – don't really seem troubling. But 3D environments have to look, if not realistic, then at least plausible given the restrictions or abilities of the setting. Platforms hanging in mid-air are an abstract thing that's du rigeur in a 2D game, but they look really weird in a 3D game without some kind of justification.
Problem two is less theoretical: 3D gaming requires a from-the-ground-up re-think of level design. Part of the reason the level layouts of a 2D side-scrolling game work at all is that the player has that side-on perspective that lets them see what's over the next rise, and react or plan their movements accordingly. 3D games generally don't allow for that, unless they're going for what's referred to as 2.5D – 3D graphics, but levels laid out and played the same as if they were in 2D. The reason this is a problem is the domino effect it causes. If you're re-designing the levels, you also have to re-design the way the player interacts with them. The player character's moveset has to change to accommodate this new setting. And then you have related problems to solve, which were never an issue in 2D games, such as camera control.
In essence, taking an established series from 2D into 3D changes everything. The environments, the way the player character interacts with said environments, the character's moveset, and the pacing. Meanwhile, franchises tended to be built on a certain consistency. You tend to buy a Contra or Castlevania or Mega Man game because you know what those games are like. The name indicates a certain kind of experience. So, the dilemma: How do you change literally everything recognizable about your game while preserving the essence of the experience so as to maintain continuity with what the franchise is all about?
Outside of Nintendo's major first-party franchises at the time, most of the heavily action-oriented series that were already big when the 3D revolution either:
Stayed 2D, and saw diminished exposure and popularity as a result (some went portable)
Went 3D, failed (sometimes after multiple tries), and died out in a console generation or two
Which brings us to Castlevania, and the fork in the road.
So, like most developers in the mid- to late 90s, Konami was trying to find ways to make their existing franchises work in 3D. This was at some point before Metal Gear Solid became their major cash-cow franchise.
Castlevania was a proven money-maker for them in the U.S. About the only entry they'd left in Japan had been Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, mainly because it was a game for the TurboGrafx-CD, which was doing almost nonexistent business in the States, and had been from its beginning. Which is a shame, really, because Rondo of Blood was damn near perfect. The Super NES conversion, Castlevania: Dracula X was good in general, but paled in comparison. But we'll come to that.
So naturally, the thing to do with their big franchises was to make them over in 3D. Which is exactly what they were doing with Castlevania on the N64. The result, Castlevania 64, was to be the the definitive statement of the series on modern consoles.
It... didn't work out that way.
Castlevania 64 went on to become one of the defining examples of what it meant to hit the Polygon Ceiling. Later that same year (1999), Konami brought out Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, which expanded on its ideas and made some improvements, but still wasn't all that well received. But there was this other game that came first...

Koji Igarashi, a programmer at Konami, had put together a B team and gotten permission to make his own spin-off Castlevania game for the PlayStation, titled Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It was going to be a 2D game, so Konami didn't put much effort into marketing or advertising it, at least not in the U.S. I don't know about elsewhere in the world, but in the U.S. at least, there was a certain drive to leave 2D gaming behind in favor of 3D. A certain amount of this (it's difficult to say how much) was admittedly driven by the console manufacturers and software publishers themselves, in an effort to sell more games by making said games look as cutting-edge as possible.
But gaming in 3D was in a transitional state. And most transitions are ugly and awkward. Two-dimensional games like Symphony of the Night or Rayman or Silhouette Mirage lacked a lot of the immediate wow factor that 3D games possessed; they were an iteration on what had come before in a generation when everyone was fixated on what was new and shiny. But at the same time, they had the benefit of established technique. Developers had at least two console generations' worth of history to draw upon when it came to designing a 2D game, to help them understand what worked or didn't work, and why. Many conventions of game design had been pioneered in the 8-bit days – the third console generation – and had been refined in the fourth generation. This fifth generation and its newer technologies offered the opportunity to refine it further still.
Time has been unkind to many of these early 3D efforts. However impressive most of these games looked upon release, many of them have aged poorly. With controls that are often both clumsy and awkward, and with graphics that frequently looked rudimentary even one console generation removed, they can be hard to go back to. And I say this despite all my intense personal nostalgia for games in this period. Two-dimensional games, meanwhile, have frequently aged much better.
Symphony of the Night, for example, which went on to become the face of the Castlevania franchise.
It's a little strange to think about Symphony of the Night being the odd one out, nowadays. It, and all the portable games that chased after its success and were to varying degrees crafted in its image, became what the franchise was known for in the end. There's a reason the genre is called "Metroidvania". But this was where all that began, and as a non-linear exploration-based side-scrolling game with RPG elements, Symphony of the Night seemed like a weird fit for the series at the time it came out.
There was some precedent for this in the series prior. Castlevania II: Simon's Quest had seen the player character traversing the Transylvanian countryside looking for bits of Dracula in order to unite and destroy them, and thus break the curse upon him. It was also a non-linear and exploration-based side-scrolling game. However, it was bad at communicating with the player and providing the necessary clues to make sense of its challenges. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, meanwhile, featured multiple routes through its levels by the simple expedient of giving the player a discrete choice at the end of most stages leading up to Dracula's castle. Rondo of Blood featured multiple paths, but presented them more organically, by having branching pathways and hidden routes in the levels themselves, which often led to different subsequent levels when pursued.
But all of these were mere flirtations with the idea of exploration compared to the sprawling, open mass of content that was Symphony of the Night.

Likewise, the series typically featured physically imposing, practically barbarian heroes before. Symphony's immediate predecessor, Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, had about the most characterization the series had seen in any of its heroes with Richter Belmont, who went on his adventure not only because Dracula was a bad, bad man, but also because he had kidnapped Richter's fiancee (along with a few other village girls, and a young lady named Maria Renard, who could also be played once rescued).
In place of the usual pseudo-barbarian hero, Symphony instead features a new playable character, Alucard, Dracula's half-vampire son. His true name, according to the manual, is Adrian Farenheits Tepes (yes, really), which... I can't decide whether that's awesome or ridiculous. Anyway, he goes by Alucard, which of course is his father's name spelled backward, to symbolize his opposition to his father.

Alucard first appeared back in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, which Igarashi has stated was his favorite game in the series. There, Alucard was one of three possible partner spirits the main character could recruit, after first facing him as a boss enemy. In that game, Alucard had a weaker version of his father's trademark triple-fireball attack, and the ability to turn into a bat and fly to locations other characters couldn't reach (at the cost of a constant expenditure of special weapon ammo). There, he was probably the least useful of the three partner spirits. His bat transformation was really helpful in only a small number of situations, and his attack was weak even when powered up to the three-shot version, unless you could make all three shots hit the same target. And like all the partner spirits, he was more fragile than the main character.
He's appeared elsewhere in the series since. In addition to an appearance prior to Symphony in one of the old-school Gameboy entries, he also shows up (under the alias Genya Arikado) in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow for the Gameboy Advance, as well as in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the original DS. His appearance in Symhony of the Night led to a change in how its heroes looked. Character designer Ayami Kojima has a far more shoujo design sensibility, and as a result the franchise's leads have tended toward being more slender and androgynous ever since, even in the games she didn't design characters for.
But getting back to Symphony of the Night, Alucard was the perfect character for what Igarashi had in mind for the game. Both in his personal identity and in the kind of character he was, he represented something altogether different from the series norm: a slender, impeccably dressed nobleman in place of a broad-shouldered, leather-clad warrior; a cold, remote swordsman over a muscle-bound whip-swinger. He served as much as anything else to communicate that Symphony of the Night was headed in a different direction from the rest of the games up to that point.
Most games in the series were fairly typical for side-scrolling action games. Enemies tended to be weak defensively, but packed a punch, and were intended to soften you up for the bosses. You had your standard layouts of platforms to navigate between, with spike traps and instant-death falls into bottomless pits as punishment for bad timing of your jumps. Your player character did not grow as the game progressed: You had a single weapon with which to attack the enemies, though Castlevania allowed you to supplement this with sub-weapons, which you could find scattered throughout the game's stages, and which required ammunition to use. The game, meanwhile, grew in difficulty as you progressed, requiring you to hone your skills as you went. What was unique about Castlevania was its difficulty (its particular mechanics put it on the high end of fair, for the standards of the day) and its medieval/gothic horror setting.
Symphony of the Night is still a side-scrolling game, but that's essentially where the similarities end. Igarashi took a page out of the Metroid playbook, and crafted a non-linear, exploration-based action game. Then, for good measure, he bolted on some basic RPG elements. So rather than a linear march to the endgame, the player is allowed – encouraged, even required! – to explore every nook and cranny, gradually acquiring new weapons and abilities as they go, and to revisit old locations with their new-found powers and abilities in order to open up new pathways.
Yet for all the ways it's different from the series that sired it, Symphony of the Night leaned more heavily on the (admittedly somewhat anemic) series lore than any game had previously.
Rondo never saw release in the U.S., which is a goddamned crime, even as I understand perfectly why Konami passed on localizing it. What we got instead was Castlevania: Dracula X for the Super NES (known as Vampire's Kiss in Europe). This version of the game has some interesting trade-offs going on. The graphics are somewhat better, since it's a Super NES game. However, the music, while nice, doesn't hold a candle to the CD soundtrack featured in the original game. It also loses out on the multiple routes that were perhaps the defining feature of the TurboGrafx-CD version, which seems more questionable. The result is something that feels very much like a bright, shiny consolation prize.
Symphony of the Night is set in the 1790s, about five years after the events of Rondo of Blood. Alucard himself first appeared in the fifteenth century during the events of Castlevania III, so he's been around a while already; Symphony is therefore tied to two different games in the series. But as much as there was a shared continuity between installments, their taking place a century apart meant that none of them really required you to have played the previous installments to appreciate the current one. It isn't the first game in the series to revisit a particular point in time and set of characters – the very first sequel did it, after all – but it is the first to show real growth of any kind in those characters. Richter returns in a startling reversal of his original role as vampire hunter, and Maria Renard is all grown up and looking to take care of things on her own. And while it's true that you still really don't need to have played Rondo of Blood to enjoy Symphony of the Night, there was that added layer of interest for fans of the previous game.

Among the many other things Symphony gets right is its gameplay. Overall, the game is a little on the easy side, but that's easy to forgive. One of the things that makes it easy is simply its design. As an exploration-based game rather than a linear side-scroller, a lot of the traditional instant-death traps (such as bottomless pits) really don't make a lot of sense from the standpoint of environmental design. Punishing the player's bad timing is basically antithetical to the design of a game like this. The challenge lies far more in figuring out the correct path to the end, instead. Instant-death scenarios would be deeply unfair in that context. Instead of running a gauntlet, the player is navigating a labyrinth.
As befits a game that takes up as much geographical space as Symphony of the Night does, the enemies show wide variation in shape, size, strength, and tactics. Their placement is likewise well-considered. Enemies of the same type only rarely occupy more than one region of the game's map, giving each region its own ecosystem. Many of them pose little threat, playing into the relative easiness of the game. They're there because fighting them gives you something to do as you traverse the castle. The real challenge is finding your way through... and, of course, fighting off the bosses.
While many of the bosses pose only a middling challenge, a few encounters are genuinely harrowing, and many of them – Olrox, Granfaloon, and Galamoth, just to name a few – make for fantastic setpiece fights.
In addition to its gorgeous and varied environments, Symphony also offers the player several different powers and abilities. Over the course of the game, Alucard gains access to powers that allow him the classic vampire transformations (into a wolf, bat, or mist) which are essential for navigating the environment. This is in addition to abilities such as double-jumping and being able to walk underwater. There's also a multitude of weapons the player can find, with a variety of abilities and drawbacks, as well as several with hidden moves.
The only place the game really falls apart is in its second half. After uncovering enough of the castle to find a particular item, then player can then face off against the seemingly final boss, only to discover that this boss isn't so final as previously believed. In fact, it's just the halfway point. The game then reveals that there is an entire second castle to explore, where the real final boss is hiding. This is great in theory.
In practice, it’s somewhat less great. The second castle is a mirror image of the first; take the castle, rotate it 180 degrees, and you have the second half of the game. The problems here are manifold.
It's not as interesting to explore, because you've seen all this before. The color palettes are altered in much of the reverse castle, but the layouts are otherwise exactly as they were in the first castle, right down to all of the secrets. But at the same time...
It's disorienting, because while essentially familiar, it's also upside-down. It constantly messes with your ability to navigate without constant reference to the map. And while it would be nice to praise clever level design that works both right side-up and upside-down, the fact that you can double-jump, high-jump, and fly means that pathfinding is trivially easy no matter which way the environment is pointed. And since you already have all the essential expansions to your moveset...
There's less to get excited about. Part of the appeal of any good Metroidvania game is the player character's slowly evolving moveset, which allows increased exploration of the game's environment. There's a small thrill at the "Ah-ha!" moment when you realize that your double-jump or ability to fly or turn into mist will allow you to access an area you couldn't reach previously, either granting access to new areas or to yet another new power-up, expanding your moveset further. But that sense of excitement goes away since you already have all the essential maneuvering capabilities. It also means...
Since you've already acquired all your essential abilities, there is no direction suggested by limitations upon your movements, as there would usually be in a game like this. Most Metroidvanias are structured so that there are initially only a few places you can go, with tantalizing hints of what might lie beyond currently accessible regions. Thus, while you're free to explore in the reverse castle, the lack of growing capabilities means every direction is arbitrary. You spend the whole latter half of the game just going wherever, because one direction is as good as another.
While the game still never gets really hard, the difficulty does spike in the inverted castle. Unfortunately, it does this mainly by just making the enemies give and take more punishment. Monsters who served as minor bosses in the first castle now show up as basic enemies. As a result, the game slows down as you slog your way forward.
The thing is, this doesn't make Symphony of the Night a bad game. It does mean the latter half falls apart a bit, and is somewhat disapointing as a result. Most of the time, when I play through it these days, I tend to stop once I reach the inverted castle. The level of novelty adn inventiveness on display throughout the first half tapers off pretty abruptly in the second half. But it's still overall a vastly entertaining game, and one that I love. It’s worth playing through by basically anybody.
Inverted castle aside, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was a smash hit. It was one of the first PlayStation games I ever bought, somewhere in the spring of 1999.
I remember suddenly recalling, out of the blue one day, that I'd read about a Castlevania game for the PlayStation that was a little different from the rest of the series. That was it. I knew it existed. So renting it seemed like the safest bet.
The problem with rentals, of course, is that after the end of the rental period, they actually do expect you to give it back. And that was a problem, because after just about half an hour spent playing the game, I decided that this was one of the most phenomenal games I'd ever played. It went without saying that I wanted to own it. In fact I wound up picking up a copy that night (technically, it was after midnight, so that would really make it the following morning) for $20 at a Wal-Mart that was open 24 hours. I returned the rental the next day, since I wouldn't be needing it any more.
Really, I think I knew I wanted to own this game the moment I got into the Alchemy Laboratory, the second main area, and the first that really allowed for some exploration at the very beginning. It was perhaps the first area where everything I loved about the game came together perfectly: the graphics (lushly detailed and lovingly animated), the environments (big, eclectic in theme, and interesting to look at), and the music (as eclectic as the environments, beautifully orchestrated and arranged).

I still wind up digging into it for at least a little while every year – and, yes, it's usually around Halloween that I do. I don't usually go through the inverted castle, as I mentioned before. I have stuff to do, and my enthusiasm usually wanes around that point. But I did it this year, for old times’ sake.
It’s always a pleasure playing Symphony for the little details here and there throughout the game. But I especially took notice playing through it earlier this month, since I was playing it to finish it, and to take a more critical look at it.
For all that the PlayStation is routinely (and, let's be honest, correctly) assessed as a system with anemic 2D capabilities, Symphony of the Night is a 2D powerhouse for the standards of its day. And as pixellated as it looks when viewed on HD TVs or monitors today, it still looks fairly amazing.
There are all sorts of tiny details that work to sell the environments of the game as places with their own distinct identities. Birds nest in the belfries of the Cathedral. The frozen-over sections of the underground caverns have a thin skin of ice on the pools of water there, which will break off, a bit at a time, as you collide with them. Then you have the rats doing their rat business in the little inaccessible nooks and crannies of the Outer Wall. For that matter, the Outer Wall's weather will randomly change whenever you enter it: It can be clear, foggy, or raining. There's no effect on the gameplay; it's purely for effect. Then there's the way many enemies (not just bosses) have unique and involved death animations. This is on top of them being already highly detailed as it stands. And these enemies are rarely repeated throughout the game. Each area has its own unique ecosystem of enemies which aren’t often found elsewhere in the game. Seeing the full range of the game’s bestiary is in fact one of the few real joys of exploring the inverted castle.
The only part of the game that’s aged somewhat less gracefully is its 3D graphics, which thankfully don’t matter too much. There’s actually very little 3D in the game proper, and what’s there is used either as background elements (rushing clouds in the Cathedral and Clock Tower areas, and the clock tower itself), or as a supplement to the 2D graphics (the ice crystals that the Ice Maiden enemies use to shield themselves or shoot at you, the pulsing lake of lava, etc.). About the only instance of 3D where I cry foul is the wings of the giant bat. Those are honestly kind of embarrassing. Everything else is fine, if a bit low-fi. But I find myself getting pretty nostalgic for that, honestly.
Still, as easy as it is to get wrapped up in extolling the virtues of Symphony of the Night’s technical mastery, what should be kept in mind is that buried under all the flash is a solid game. Like the best Metroidvania titles, it challenges you not through your steel-trap reflexes but by your ability to navigate the world, to find the correct way ahead, to ferret out the secrets necessary to success. Unlike its predecessors, it presents not a gauntlet to be run, but a puzzle to be solved.
Because it amuses me, let’s take a look at some of the localization oddities of Symphony of the Night.
Someone at Konami – I'm about 80 percent sure this was someone on the localization team, not the original Japanese development team – was hell-bent on inserting fantasy and sci-fi literature references into the game.
The boss Granfaloon takes its name from a word invented by Kurt Vonnegut in his book Cat's Cradle. It's used to describe a collective of people whose commonalities might seem to be significant factors in their association, but which are in fact meaningless in the grand divine plan. This boss shows up in at least one later game (Aria of Sorrow), and is renamed to the more-appropriate Legion.
There's a handful of references to The Wizard of Oz, of all things. These come in the form of three different enemies: a scarecrow who jumps around fairly brainlessly, an enemy called Tin Man which is essentially a steam-powered machine full of blades, and an enemy called simply Lion which is described as being cowardly.
And then there are the references to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion...
This will be easier as a list:
The Nauglamir: In-game, it’s a necklace that raises the player’s defense. In The Silmarillion it’s a necklace made by the Dwarves for the Elvish king Thingol, which among other gemstones contained one of the Silmarils – a gem (out of a set of three) containing vast but frustratingly vague magical powers.
The Sword of Hador: In-game, it’s described as belonging to the House of Hador. This is a reference to The Children of Hurin, which is one of the main tales of The Silmarillion, and more recently was expanded into a book in its own right. The House of Hador is more famous for its dragon-crested helmet, but the game has a dragon helm as a major piece of Alucard’s equipment already, and the developers probably didn’t want to name one of the more important items after something in an intellectual property they didn’t own.
The Fists of Tulkas: In-game, they’re a set of gauntlets to be equipped for punching enemies. Tulkas in The Silmarillion is a god-like being whose area of divine responsibility is war.
The Mormegil: In-game, it’s described as a black-bladed sword, and by its statistics, it’s especially powerful against holy-aligned enemies. In The Silmarillion, it’s a sword used by Turin Turambar, of the House of Hador (though it’s not an heirloom of said House), which does indeed have a black blade, and a sinister past.
The Ring of Varda: In-game, it’s a ring that gives stat bonuses to the player. In The Silmarillion, Varda is a goddess of sorts – the queen of the highest tier of divine beings, just below the creator – who is associated with the stars.
Azaghal: In-game, a unique enemy who appears in exactly one location (the inverted version of Olrox’s quarters, for the curious). He is an enormous glowing phantom who swings a sword that’s at least twice the size of the player’s character. In The Silmarillion, he’s a Dwarvish king slain in battle by a dragon. He has a dragon-crested helm which is given to one of the Elvish princes after his death, which is the same helm that ultimately becomes the heirloom of House Hador, after changing hands a few times.
The Crissaegrim: In-game, it’s the most game-breakingly powerful sword the player can find, being a sword that strikes four times in the amount of time most other swords take to strike once, strikes diagonally upward and downward on two of its strikes, and has the best reach of any of the game’s other swords’ standard attacks. And you don’t have to stop moving to swing it. In The Silmarillion, it’s a mountain range where the Eagles dwelt. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, it no longer exists, having sunk into the sea along with much of the land where The Silmarillion takes place.
Castlevania has always borrowed from pop culture to some extent. The original game borrowed its boss monsters from classic horror movies and literature (Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, and the mummy), and its sequels up to this point borrowed still more. But the specific things being borrowed in Symphony of the Night have always struck me as weird. There's something a bit more... universal? (pun unintended) about Dracula or the mummy or the wolf-man or Medusa or... The list goes on. The Silmarillion and Cat's Cradle and The Wizard of Oz are more puzzling, at least to me. Maybe it's just that they're not in the public domain (well, The Wizard of Oz is; the book, at any rate). Maybe it's because they're not as firmly in the horror genre themselves, or even horror-adjacent.
The success of Symphony of the Night helped propel Koji Igarashi to the position of de facto steward of the franchise. After Konami's double failure to craft a worthy Castlevania in 3D on the N64, they decided to go smaller-scale for the series, at least for a few years. The next game, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was released in 2001 for the Gameboy Advance. While it wasn't directed by Igarashi, it clearly aped Symphony of the Night in most respects. Regrettably, its overall quality wasn't one of them. Igarashi returned to the director's seat for the next several games in the series. He got his band back together (Michiru Yamane on music, Ayami Kojima on character designs) for Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, which has a somewhat divisive reputation among the fanbase. The follow-up, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, is often considered to be the first truly worthy successor to Symphony. The following games on the DS – Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia – saw diminishing returns.
Igarashi's success with his Metroidvania titles in the series eventually saw him put in charge of a new attempt to make Castlevania in 3D. The results, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness on the PlayStation 2, were... competent, at least. I’ll probably talk more about those another time.
The Castlevania franchise ultimately got farmed out to Mercury Steam, a Spanish developer, who took the series in a different direction (though one of their games is at least to some extent a Metroidvania in Igarashi’s mold).
More recently, Igarashi's gotten back in the saddle. While he's no longer with Konami, he's been toiling away on a Kickstarter project called Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which follows aggressively in the footsteps of his Metroidvania games. His initial Kickstarter pitch leaned heavily into his success with the Castlevania franchise. While Ritual of the Night has yet to be released, his team put together a faux-8-bit homage to Castlevania III titled Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, which seems to be positioned as a prequel to Ritual of the Night. It's fantastic, and is available for PC and all current consoles.
I’ve spent a lot of time talking about Symphony of the Night; I should probably discuss its availability for whoever is curious. I’ll break this down by systems.
Sony: By far, Sony’s systems have the widest availability for this game. The original PlayStation disc can be played on a PlayStation, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3, or via any halfway decent PlayStation emulator on PC. Almost any computer you can buy today will run PlayStation games just fine with emulation. In addition, this same version is available digitally as a PS One Classic on PSN, so you can download it version for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PS Vita, or PS TV. Like most single-disc PlayStation games on PSN, it runs about five dollars. Then there’s Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. This is a PSP release whose main purpose was to be a shiny new 2.5D remake of Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, a.k.a. Castlevania: The One That Got Away for many years in the U.S. However, you can easily unlock Symphony of the Night in it (as well as the original TurboGrafx-CD version of Rondo of Blood). This version of Symphony features a new voice cast and a rewritten script, which may or may not recommend it. The original game was never going to be High Drama even in some theoretical ideal form, and the original script and hamtastic acting at least gave it a kind of B-grade charm. As it stands, the newer version’s acting is more professional, but loses some of that overwrought but undersold charm. However, it's completely serviceable, and the fact is that all three games in the collection make it well worth a purchase. It's available physically (for PSP only) or digitally (for the PSP, PS Vita, and PS TV). Finally, there’s Castlevania: Requiem, a combo pack for the PS4 which contains both Symphony of the Night and the TurboGrafx version of Rondo of Blood, with the English translations and voice work from the PSP release. These updated versions of the game feature a new song that plays over the ending credits (more on that below). Castlevania Requiem also allows you to enable filters to soften the sharpness of the image, or to play it stretched fullscreen as well as in the original 4:3 aspect ratio with a variety of frames for vertical letterboxing.
Microsoft: An HD remaster of Symphony of the Night came out early in the Xbox 360's lifespan for Xbox Live Arcade. It offers a smoothing filter for the graphics, and a frame for the vertical letterboxing (the game itself is still presented in 4:3 aspect ratio with no option to stretch the image). The script and voice acting are the same as the original version. There are two brief CGI cutscenes in the original version of the game which were cut from this version to save disk space (originally, Xbox Live Arcade titles had to come in under a certain size limit), but nothing of value here is lost. The music for the ending credits has also changed from the original version. The original song, "I Am the Wind", was replaced with a new piece due to licensing issues. Again, personally, I think nothing of value was lost. "I Am the Wind" sounded tremendously out of place, tonally, compared to the rest of the game. In addition to the Xbox 360, this version of the game is also playable on the Xbox One via backward compatibility.
Nintendo: Nothing, sadly. The closest Nintendo ever got to this game was having a near-perfect port of the Japanese version of Rondo of Blood on the Virtual Console, but the VC's basically shut down at this point. You can still download games you've already purchased, but new purchases are no longer possible.
PC: No official release of Symphony of the Night has occurred on PC, despite it being an excellent candidate for Steam, because Konami is a shit company run by shit people, and they've decided to leverage all their intellectual properties for pachinko machines these days, which is a very shit thing for them to be doing. Your best bet for PC is to get the PlayStation disc and download an emulator.

How Bitcoin Works
How exactly to categorize Bitcoin is a matter of controversy. Is it a type of currency, a store of value, a payment network or an asset class?
Fortunately, it's easier to define what Bitcoin actually is. It's software. Don't be fooled by stock images of shiny coins emblazoned with modified Thai baht symbols. Bitcoin is a purely digital phenomenon, a set of protocols and processes.
It also is the most successful of hundreds of attempts to create virtual money through the use of cryptography, the science of making and breaking codes. Bitcoin has inspired hundreds of imitators, but it remains the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, a distinction it has held throughout its decade-plus history.
(A general note: according to the Bitcoin Foundation, the word "Bitcoin" is capitalized when it refers to the cryptocurrency as an entity, and it is given as "bitcoin" when it refers to a quantity of the currency or the units themselves. Bitcoin is also abbreviated as "BTC." Throughout this article, we will alternate between these usages.)
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Bitcoin is a digital currency, a decentralized system which records transactions in a distributed ledger called a blockchain.
Bitcoin miners run complex computer rigs to solve complicated puzzles in an effort to confirm groups of transactions called blocks; upon success, these blocks are added to the blockchain record and the miners are rewarded with a small number of bitcoins.
Other participants in the Bitcoin market can buy or sell tokens through cryptocurrency exchanges or peer-to-peer.
The Bitcoin ledger is protected against fraud via a trustless system; Bitcoin exchanges also work to defend themselves against potential theft, but high-profile thefts have occurred.
The Blockchain
Bitcoin is a network that runs on a protocol known as the blockchain. A 2008 paper by a person or people calling themselves Satoshi Nakamoto first described both the blockchain and Bitcoin and for a while the two terms were all but synonymous.
The blockchain has since evolved into a separate concept, and thousands of blockchains have been created using similar cryptographic techniques. This history can make the nomenclature confusing. Blockchain sometimes refers to the original, Bitcoin blockchain. At other times it refers to blockchain technology in general, or to any other specific blockchain, such as the one that powers Ethereum.
The basics of blockchain technology are mercifully straightforward. Any given blockchain consists of a single chain of discrete blocks of information, arranged chronologically. In principle this information can be any string of 1s and 0s, meaning it could include emails, contracts, land titles, marriage certificates, or bond trades. In theory, any type of contract between two parties can be established on a blockchain as long as both parties agree on the contract. This takes away any need for a third party to be involved in any contract. This opens a world of possibilities including peer-to-peer financial products, like loans or decentralized savings and checking accounts, where banks or any intermediary is irrelevant.
While Bitcoin's current goal is a store of value as well as a payment system, there is nothing to say that Bitcoin could not be used in such a way in the future, though consensus would need to be reached to add these systems to Bitcoin. The main goal of the Ethereum project is to have a platform where these "smart contracts" can occur, therefore creating a whole realm of decentralized financial products without any middlemen and the fees and potential data breaches that come along with them.
This versatility has caught the eye of governments and private corporations; indeed, some analysts believe that blockchain technology will ultimately be the most impactful aspect of the cryptocurrency craze.
In Bitcoin's case, though, the information on the blockchain is mostly transactions.
Bitcoin is really just a list. Person A sent X bitcoin to person B, who sent Y bitcoin to person C, etc. By tallying these transactions up, everyone knows where individual users stand. It's important to note that these transactions do not necessarily need to be done from human to human.
Anything can access and use the Bitcoin network and your ethnicity, gender, religion, species, or political leaning are completely irrelevant. This creates vast possibilities for the internet of things. In the future, we could see systems where self-driving taxis or uber vehicles have their own blockchain wallets. The car would be sent cryptocurrency from the passenger and would not move until funds are received. The vehicle would be able to assess when it needs fuel and would use its wallet to facilitate a refill.
Another name for a blockchain is a "distributed ledger," which emphasizes the key difference between this technology and a well-kept Word document. Bitcoin's blockchain is distributed, meaning that it is public. Anyone can download it in its entirety or go to any number of sites that parse it. This means that the record is publicly available, but it also means that there are complicated measures in place for updating the blockchain ledger. There is no central authority to keep tabs on all bitcoin transactions, so the participants themselves do so by creating and verifying "blocks" of transaction data. See the section on "Mining" below for more information.
You can see, for example, that 15N3yGu3UFHeyUNdzQ5sS3aRFRzu5Ae7EZ sent 0.01718427 bitcoin to 1JHG2qjdk5Khiq7X5xQrr1wfigepJEK3t on August 14, 2017, between 11:10 and 11:20 a.m. The long strings of numbers and letters are addresses, and if you were in law enforcement or just very well-informed, you could probably figure out who controlled them. It is a misconception that Bitcoin's network is totally anonymous although taking certain precautions can make it very hard to link individuals to transactions.
How to Buy Bitcoin
Post-Trust
Despite being absolutely public, or rather because of that fact, Bitcoin is extremely difficult to tamper with. A bitcoin has no physical presence, so you can't protect it by locking it in a safe or burying it in the woods.
In theory, all a thief would need to do to take it from you would be to add a line to the ledger that translates to "you paid me everything you have."
A related worry is double-spending. If a bad actor could spend some bitcoin, then spend it again, confidence in the currency's value would quickly evaporate. To achieve a double-spend the bad actor would need to make up 51% of the mining power of Bitcoin. The larger the Bitcoin network grows the less realistic this becomes as the computing power needed would be astronomical and extremely expensive.
To further prevent either from happening, you need trust. In this case, the accustomed solution with traditional currency would be to transact through a central, neutral arbiter such as a bank. Bitcoin has made that unnecessary, however. (It is probably not a coincidence Satoshi's original description was published in October 2008, when trust in banks was at a multigenerational low. This is a recurring theme in today's coronavirus climate and growing government debt.) Rather than having a reliable authority keep the ledger and preside over the network, the bitcoin network is decentralized. Everyone keeps an eye on everyone else.
No one needs to know or trust anyone in particular in order for the system to operate correctly. Assuming everything is working as intended, the cryptographic protocols ensure that each block of transactions is bolted onto the last in a long, transparent, and immutable chain.
Mining
The process that maintains this trustless public ledger is known as mining. Undergirding the network of Bitcoin users who trade the cryptocurrency among themselves is a network of miners, who record these transactions on the blockchain.
Recording a string of transactions is trivial for a modern computer, but mining is difficult because Bitcoin's software makes the process artificially time-consuming. Without the added difficulty, people could spoof transactions to enrich themselves or bankrupt other people. They could log a fraudulent transaction in the blockchain and pile so many trivial transactions on top of it that untangling the fraud would become impossible.
By the same token, it would be easy to insert fraudulent transactions into past blocks. The network would become a sprawling, spammy mess of competing ledgers, and bitcoin would be worthless.
Combining "proof of work" with other cryptographic techniques was Satoshi's breakthrough. Bitcoin's software adjusts the difficulty miners face in order to limit the network to one new 1-megabyte block of transactions every 10 minutes. That way the volume of transactions is digestible. The network has time to vet the new block and the ledger that precedes it, and everyone can reach a consensus about the status quo. Miners do not work to verify transactions by adding blocks to the distributed ledger purely out of a desire to see the Bitcoin network run smoothly; they are compensated for their work as well. We'll take a closer look at mining compensation below.
Halving
As previously mentioned, miners are rewarded with Bitcoin for verifying blocks of transactions. This reward is cut in half every 210,000 blocks mined, or, about every four years. This event is called the halving or the "halvening." The system is built-in as a deflationary one, where the rate at which new Bitcoin is released into circulation.
This process is designed so that rewards for Bitcoin mining will continue until about 2140. Once all Bitcoin is mined from the code and all halvings are finished, the miners will remain incentivized by fees that they will charge network users. The hope is that healthy competition will keep fees low.
This system drives up Bitcoin's stock-to-flow ratio and lowers its inflation until it is eventually zero. After the third halving that took place on May 11th, 2020, the reward for each block mined is now 6.25 Bitcoins.
Hashes
Here is a slightly more technical description of how mining works. The network of miners, who are scattered across the globe and not bound to each other by personal or professional ties, receives the latest batch of transaction data. They run the data through a cryptographic algorithm that generates a "hash," a string of numbers and letters that verifies the information's validity but does not reveal the information itself. (In reality, this ideal vision of decentralized mining is no longer accurate, with industrial-scale mining farms and powerful mining pools forming an oligopoly. More on that below.)
Given the hash 000000000000000000c2c4d562265f272bd55d64f1a7c22ffeb66e15e826ca30, you cannot know what transactions the relevant block (#480504) contains. You can, however, take a bunch of data purporting to be block #480504 and make sure that it has not been tampered with. If one number were out of place, no matter how insignificant, the data would generate a totally different hash. As an example, if you were to run the Declaration of Independence through a hash calculator, you might get 839f561caa4b466c84e2b4809afe116c76a465ce5da68c3370f5c36bd3f67350. Delete the period after the words "submitted to a candid world," though, and you get 800790e4fd445ca4c5e3092f9884cdcd4cf536f735ca958b93f60f82f23f97c4. This is a completely different hash, although you've only changed one character in the original text.
The hash technology allows the Bitcoin network to instantly check the validity of a block. It would be incredibly time-consuming to comb through the entire ledger to make sure that the person mining the most recent batch of transactions hasn't tried anything funny. Instead, the previous block's hash appears within the new block. If the most minute detail had been altered in the previous block, that hash would change. Even if the alteration was 20,000 blocks back in the chain, that block's hash would set off a cascade of new hashes and tip off the network.
Generating a hash is not really work, though. The process is so quick and easy that bad actors could still spam the network and perhaps, given enough computing power, pass off fraudulent transactions a few blocks back in the chain. So the Bitcoin protocol requires proof of work.
It does so by throwing miners a curveball: Their hash must be below a certain target. That's why block #480504's hash starts with a long string of zeroes. It's tiny. Since every string of data will generate one and only one hash, the quest for a sufficiently small one involves adding nonces ("numbers used once") to the end of the data. So a miner will run [thedata]. If the hash is too big, she will try again. [thedata]1. Still too big. [thedata]2. Finally, [thedata]93452 yields her a hash beginning with the requisite number of zeroes.
The mined block will be broadcast to the network to receive confirmations, which take another hour or so, though occasionally much longer, to process. (Again, this description is simplified. Blocks are not hashed in their entirety, but broken up into more efficient structures called Merkle trees.)
(Minutes, 7-day average)
Depending on the kind of traffic the network is receiving, Bitcoin's protocol will require a longer or shorter string of zeroes, adjusting the difficulty to hit a rate of one new block every 10 minutes. As of October 2019, the current difficulty is around 6.379 trillion, up from 1 in 2009. As this suggests, it has become significantly more difficult to mine Bitcoin since the cryptocurrency launched a decade ago.
Mining is intensive, requiring big, expensive rigs and a lot of electricity to power them. And it's competitive. There's no telling what nonce will work, so the goal is to plow through them as quickly as possible.
Early on, miners recognized that they could improve their chances of success by combining into mining pools, sharing computing power and divvying the rewards up among themselves. Even when multiple miners split these rewards, there is still ample incentive to pursue them. Every time a new block is mined, the successful miner receives a bunch of newly created bitcoin. At first, it was 50, but then it halved to 25, and now it is 12.5 (about $119,000 in October 2019).
The reward will continue to halve every 210,000 blocks, or about every four years, until it hits zero. At that point, all 21 million bitcoins will have been mined, and miners will depend solely on fees to maintain the network. When Bitcoin was launched, it was planned that the total supply of the cryptocurrency would be 21 million tokens.
The fact that miners have organized themselves into pools worries some. If a pool exceeds 50% of the network's mining power, its members could potentially spend coins, reverse the transactions, and spend them again. They could also block others' transactions. Simply put, this pool of miners would have the power to overwhelm the distributed nature of the system, verifying fraudulent transactions by virtue of the majority power it would hold.
That could spell the end of Bitcoin, but even a so-called 51% attack would probably not enable the bad actors to reverse old transactions, because the proof of work requirement makes that process so labor-intensive. To go back and alter the blockchain, a pool would need to control such a large majority of the network that it would probably be pointless. When you control the whole currency, who is there to trade with?
A 51% attack is a financially suicidal proposition from the miners' perspective. When Ghash.io, a mining pool, reached 51% of the network's computing power in 2014, it voluntarily promised to not exceed 39.99% of the Bitcoin hash rate in order to maintain confidence in the cryptocurrency's value. Other actors, such as governments, might find the idea of such an attack interesting, though. But, again, the sheer size of Bitcoin's network would make this overwhelmingly expensive, even for a world power.
Another source of concern related to miners is the practical tendency to concentrate in parts of the world where electricity is cheap, such as China, or, following a Chinese crackdown in early 2018, Quebec.
Bitcoin Transactions
For most individuals participating in the Bitcoin network, the ins and outs of the blockchain, hash rates and mining are not particularly relevant. Outside of the mining community, Bitcoin owners usually purchase their cryptocurrency supply through a Bitcoin exchange. These are online platforms that facilitate transactions of Bitcoin and, often, other digital currencies.
El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender on June 9, 2021.1 It is the first country to do so. The cryptocurrency can be used for any transaction where the business can accept it. The U.S. dollar continues to be El Salvador’s primary currency.
Bitcoin exchanges such as Coinbase bring together market participants from around the world to buy and sell cryptocurrencies. These exchanges have been both increasingly popular (as Bitcoin's popularity itself has grown in recent years) and fraught with regulatory, legal and security challenges. With governments around the world viewing cryptocurrencies in various ways – as currency, as an asset class, or any number of other classifications – the regulations governing the buying and selling of bitcoins are complex and constantly shifting.
Perhaps even more important for Bitcoin exchange participants than the threat of changing regulatory oversight, however, is that of theft and other criminal activity. While the Bitcoin network itself has largely been secure throughout its history, individual exchanges are not necessarily the same. Many thefts have targeted high-profile cryptocurrency exchanges, oftentimes resulting in the loss of millions of dollars worth of tokens. The most famous exchange theft is likely Mt. Gox, which dominated the Bitcoin transaction space up through 2014. Early in that year, the platform announced the probable theft of roughly 850,000 BTC worth close to $450 million at the time. Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy and shuttered its doors; to this day, the majority of that stolen bounty (which would now be worth a total of about $8 billion) has not been recovered.
Keys and Wallets
For these reasons, it's understandable that Bitcoin traders and owners will want to take any possible security measures to protect their holdings. To do so, they utilize keys and wallets.
Bitcoin ownership essentially boils down to two numbers, a public key and a private key. A rough analogy is a username (public key) and a password (private key). A hash of the public key called an address is the one displayed on the blockchain. Using the hash provides an extra layer of security.
To receive bitcoin, it's enough for the sender to know your address. The public key is derived from the private key, which you need to send bitcoin to another address. The system makes it easy to receive money but requires verification of identity to send it.
To access bitcoin, you use a wallet, which is a set of keys. These can take different forms, from third-party web applications offering insurance and debit cards, to QR codes printed on pieces of paper. The most important distinction is between "hot" wallets, which are connected to the internet and therefore vulnerable to hacking, and "cold" wallets, which are not connected to the internet. In the Mt. Gox case above, it is believed that most of the BTC stolen were taken from a hot wallet. Still, many users entrust their private keys to cryptocurrency exchanges, which essentially is a bet that those exchanges will have stronger defense against the possibility of theft than one's own computer.

THE POOLED-ORIENTED
I asked her what specific things she remembered speakers always saying, she mentioned: that the way to succeed was to launch something fast, listen to users, and then you realize the window has closed. But we didn't invent that idea: it's just a slightly more concentrated form of existing Valley culture. So if you want to make it look like a group photo. But the rise of startups. And bingo, there it is: The Men's Wearhouse was at that moment remember!1 Partly because, as components of oligopolies themselves, the corporations knew they could safely pass the cost on to their customers, because their competitors would have to as well. If a startup fails, it will probably fail quickly enough that you can stop judging them and yourself by superficial measures, but that you get discouraged when no one around you cares about the same time, as their next door neighbors. One reason so many good ideas come from the tradition of rapid prototyping. In addition to the power of the marginal into one sentence it would be stupid to use anyone else's software.2 If you could get the right ten thousand people to move there. He did the research that won him the Nobel Prize at Bell Labs, but when he started his own company by someone mature and experienced, with a business background, who then proceeded to ruin the company.3
The problem with this article is not just that it originated in a PR firm $16,000 a month.4 For us the test of whether a startup understood this was whether they had Aeron chairs. You can't just tinker. Are there good universities nearby?5 If you tried now to create a startup hub, because it's followed immediately by less hackable tests.6 But that's a weaker statement than the idea I began with, that it doesn't matter much; it will change anyway. Insiders who daren't walk through the mud in their nice clothes will never make it to the manufacturers of specialized video editing systems, and now Apple is doing it to the expensive models made for professionals.7 So the reason younger founders have an advantage is that they can consume a whole day sitting on a park bench.8 There's an imbalance between encouragement and discouragement like that between gaining and losing money.
If investors can no longer rely on their herd instincts, they'll have to think more about each startup before investing.9 They increased from about 2% of the population in 1900 to about 25% in 2000. It means a tedious, unpleasant task. I think we can already declare the old way dead, because those few are the best startups it produced would be sucked away to existing startup hubs. Computers are responsible for the problem. Now that we know what we're looking for in metaphors.10 Obviously they were smart, but they are. If you wanted to create a search site that didn't suck. Boston Globe. It's worth trying very, very hard to make technology easy to use and we hosted the site.11 It's the same all over Silicon Valley.
This is ridiculous, really.12 Though she'd heard a lot about YC since the beginning, the last 9 months have been a prudent choice. Surely a field like math or physics all you need are the people who are not like you want from technology?13 Though some startups go straight from YC to VC, the most valuable things the big companies paid their best people less than market price.14 If they shake your hand on a promise, they'll keep it. So the deals take longer, dilute you more, and impose more onerous conditions. This is particularly true of young people who have it are not readily hireable.15 And while this was happening, the acquirers used the delay as an excuse to welch on the deal. But as startup investors they'd have to overcome, they might build things that get used for pornography, or file-sharing, or the painter who can't afford to have any illusions about the predictors of success. Investors will probably find they have to be really good at tricking you.
You can see this most clearly in New York, and Boston. Boston is a tech center because it's the only real way to learn, but copy the right things. So for the better technology companies, the patent pledge does fix may be more serious than the problem of patent trolls. Civil liberties? What nerds like is the kind of turbulent and ambitious people you find now in America. Why? The exciting thing is, all you need is a handful of executives, politicians, regulators, and labor leaders.
And if you like certain kinds of excitement, New York is incomparable. What's really happening is that startup-controlled rounds. And the bigger you are, it's hard not to be cool and maybe make money.16 Being able to take risks is hugely valuable. Which inevitably, if unions had been doing their job tended to be lower. Most startups that fail do it because they fail at one of these.17 When they got some money was to rent office space. And yet is this not at each point a day, a week, a month I thought I'd already put in so much time into it that this must be the idea. But even those they use no more than superficial changes. At the time IBM completely dominated the computer industry.
How hard is that? Service rates for men born in the Carribbean and died all over France Pissarro was born in the early 1920s approached 80%. Startups don't seem to have had any effect on the number of startups founded by business people who then went looking for alternatives to fill this void, I found practically nothing. In fact there is no way I can think of several heuristics for generating ideas for startups, one of the motives on the FBI's list. We also thought we'd be able to refuse such an offer if they had. Startups hate this as well, partly because they're more a social than a technical phenomenon, and partly because it tends to be open source. If there are tensions between cofounders we help sort them out. People who didn't care much for religion felt less pressure to go to grad school at Harvard to cure you of any illusions you might have about the average Harvard undergrad. Instead of garden sheds they must design huge art museums.
Notes
But politicians know the electoral vote decides the election, so problems they face are probably not quite as harmless as we are not the original version of everything was called the option pool. As Paul Buchheit points out that it's no longer a precondition. I can hear them in advance that you're talking to a partner, which have remained more or less, is a way in which those considered more elegant consistently came out shorter perhaps after being macroexpanded or compiled. Strictly speaking it's impossible without a time of its workforce in 1938, thereby gaining organized labor as a general term might be a distraction.
This is why they tend to focus on at Y Combinator is we hope visited mostly by hackers. As Anthony Badger wrote, for example. We currently advise startups mostly to ignore competitors.
Unless you're very smooth founder who used to retrieve orders, view statistics, and some just want that first few million. Another advantage of having one founder is always room for something new if the potential magnitude of the ingredients in our own, like wages and productivity, but it's always better to get elected with a product company. So if you're a loser or possibly a winner, they were taken back in July 1997 was 1. One possible answer: outsource any job that's not true.
To a kid and as we are at selling it. In fact, we should worry, not because it's a book from a 6/03 Nielsen study quoted on Google's site. You've gone from guest to servant.
A rolling close usually prevents this.
There's a good problem to fit your solution. Angels and super-angels tend not to make people richer. As far as I know what they made more margin loans.
Once someone has said fail, no matter how good they are. Since people sometimes call a few additional sources on their own company.
S P 500 CEOs in 2002 was 3. Most expect founders to walk in with a company in Germany told me: One way to find the right thing to do this are companies smart enough to do it mostly on your product, and we don't have to say that it is. 5 more I didn't care about, like a headset or router.
He had such a valuable technique that any company that could be mistaken, and b not allow them to private schools that in three months, a torture device so called because it was.
The reason I even mention the possibility is that Digg is derived from the formula. And starting an outdoor portal. An Operational Definition. Some translators use calm instead of hiring them.
Some translators use calm instead of just doing things, you can imagine cases where you read them as promising to invest in so many had been raised religious and then stopped believing, so we should find it's most popular with groups that are up-front capital intensive to founders. Of course, that you should avoid. And you can use to calibrate the weighting of the words out of the things we focus on the side of the biggest winners, from the truth about the size of the world barely affects me.
That's why the series AA terms and write them a microcomputer, and I bicycled to University Ave in Palo Alto, but one way in which income is doled out by John Sculley in a non-broken form, that must mean you suck. Most unusual ambitions fail, unless it was.
In sufficiently disordered times, even if we just implemented it ourselves, so that's what you're doing. And then of course. Ed.
Which explains the astonished stories one always hears about VC while working on that? I'm not saying option pools themselves will go away, and why it's next to impossible to succeed or fail. As Paul Buchheit adds: Paul Buchheit adds: I switch person. Jones, A P supermarket chain because it has to split hairs that fine about whether a suit would violate the patent pledge, it's shocking how much they liked the iPhone too, and made more margin loans.
If they're dealing with YC companies that an artist or writer has to give them sufficient activation energy required to notice them. Apple's products but their policies.
Which in turn the most successful startups, but in practice money raised as convertible debt is a bad idea the way and run the programs on the fly is that they don't have to spend, see what new ideas you're presenting.
In grad school, secretly write your thoughts down in the technology business. And when they decide you're a YC startup you have to spend a lot better to read stories. Jones, A P successfully defended itself by allowing the unionization of its completion in 1969 the largest household refrigerators, weighs 656 pounds. Startups are businesses; the point of a safe will be, unchanging, but that's a pyramid scheme.

Fifty years of Pascal
I don’t know you but it seems yesterday for me I started to code with Basic on my VIC20 and Pascal a couple of years later and now we celebrate fifty years of Pascal. Can’t believe that.
The beginning
In the early 1960s, the languages Fortran (John Backus, IBM) for scientific, and Cobol (Jean Sammet, IBM, and DoD) for commercial applications dominated. Programs were written on paper, then punched on cards, and one waited a day for the results. Programming languages were recognized as essential aids and accelerators of the programming process.
In 1960, an international committee published the language Algol 60. It was the first time a language was defined by concisely formulated constructs and by a precise, formal syntax. Two years later, it was recognized that a few corrections and improvements were needed. Mainly, however, the range of applications should be widened, because Algol 60 was intended for scientific calculations (numerical mathematics) only. Under the auspices of IFIP a Working Group (WG 2.1) was established to tackle this project.
The group consisted of about 40 members with almost the same number of opinions and views about what a successor of Algol should look like. There ensued many discussions, and on occasions the debates ended even bitterly. Early in 1964 I became a member, and soon was requested to prepare a concrete proposal. Two factions had developed in the committee. One of them aimed at a second, after Algol 60, milestone, a language with radically new, untested concepts and pervasive flexibility. It later became known as Algol 68. The other faction remained more modest and focused on realistic improvements of known concepts. After all, time was pressing: PL/1 of IBM was about to appear. However, my proposal, although technically realistic, succumbed to the small majority that favored a milestone.
Poster of Pascal’s syntax diagrams strongly identified with Pascal
The group
It is never sufficient to merely postulate a language on paper. A solid compiler also had to be built, which usually was a highly complex program. In this respect, large industrial firms had an advantage over our Working Group, which had to rely on enthusiasts at universities. I left the Group in 1966 and devoted myself together with a few doctoral students at Stanford University to the construction of a compiler for my proposal. The result was the language Algol W,2 which after 1967 came into use at many locations on large IBM computers. It became quite successful. The milestone Algol 68 did appear and then sank quickly into obscurity under its own weight, although a few of its concepts did survive into subsequent languages.
But in my opinion Algol W was not perfectly satisfactory. It still contained too many compromises, having emerged from a committee. After my return to Switzerland, I designed a language after my own preferences: Pascal. Together with a few assistants, we wrote a user manual and constructed a compiler. In the course of it, we had a dire experience. We intended to describe the compiler in Pascal itself, then translate it manually to Fortran, and finally compile the former with the latter. This resulted in a great failure, because of the lack of data structures (records) in Fortran, which made the translation very cumbersome. After this unfortunate, expensive lesson, a second try succeeded, where in place of Fortran the local language Scallop (M. Engeli) was used.
Pascal
Like its precursor Algol 60, Pascal featured a precise definition and a few lucid, basic elements. Its structure, the syntax, was formally defined in Extended BNF. Statements described assignments of values to variables, and conditional and repeated execution. Additionally, there were procedures, and they were recursive. A significant extension were data types and structures: Its elementary data types were integers and real numbers, Boolean values, characters, and enumerations (of constants). The structures were arrays, records, files (sequences), and pointers. Procedures featured two kinds of parameters, value-and variable-parameters. Procedures could be used recursively. Most essential was the pervasive concept of data type: Every constant, variable, or function was of a fixed, static type. Thereby programs included much redundancy that a compiler could use for checking type consistency. This contributed to the detection of errors, and this before the program’s execution.
Algor
Just as important as addition of features were deletions (with respect to Algol). As C.A.R. Hoare once remarked: A language is characterized not only by what it permits programmers to specify, but even more so by what it does not allow. In this vein, Algol’s name parameter was omitted. It was rarely used, and caused considerable complications for a compiler. Also, Algol’s own concept was deleted, which allowed local variables to be global, to “survive” the activation of the procedure to which it was declared local. Algol’s for statement was drastically simplified, eliminating complex and hard to understand constructs. But the while and repeat statements were added for simple and transparent situations of repetition. Nevertheless, the controversial goto statement remained. I considered it too early for the programming community to swallow its absence. It would have been too detrimental for a general acceptance of Pascal.
Pascal was easy to teach, and it covered a wide spectrum of applications, which was a significant advantage over Algol, Fortran, and Cobol. The Pascal System was efficient, compact, and easy to use. The language was strongly influenced by the new discipline of structured programming, advocated primarily by E.W. Dijkstra to avert the threatening software crisis (1968).
Pascal was published in 1970 and for the first time used in large courses at ETH Zurich on a grand scale. We had even defined a subset Pascal-S and built a smaller compiler, in order to save computing time and memory space on our large CDC computer, and to reduce the turnaround time for students. Back then, computing time and memory space were still scarce.
Pascal’s Spread and Distribution
Soon Pascal became noticed at several universities, and interest rose for its use in classes. We received requests for possible help in implementing compilers for other large computers. It was my idea to postulate a hypothetical computer, which would be simple to realize on various other mainframes, and for which we would build a Pascal compiler at ETH. The hypothetical computer would be quickly implementable with relatively little effort using readily available tools (assemblers). Thus emerged the architecture Pascal-P (P for portable), and this technique proved to be extremely successful. The first clients came from Belfast (C.A.R. Hoare). Two assistants brought two heavy cartons of punched cards to Zurich, the compiler they had designed for their ICL computer. At the border, they were scrutinized, for there was the suspicion that the holes might contain secrets subject to custom fees. All this occurred without international project organizations, without bureaucracy and research budgets. It would be impossible today.
An interesting consequence of these developments was the emergence of user groups, mostly of young enthusiasts who wanted to promote and distribute Pascal. Their core resided under Andy Mickel in Minneapolis, where they regularly published a Pascal Newsletter. This movement contributed significantly to the rapid spread of Pascal.
First microcomputer
Several years later the first microcomputers appeared on the market. These were small computers with a processor integrated on a single chip and with 8-bit data paths, affordable by private persons. It was recognized that Pascal was suitable for these processors, due to its compact compiler that would fit into the small memory (64K). A group under Ken Bowles at the University of San Diego, and Philippe Kahn at Borland Inc. in Santa Cruz surrounded our compiler with a simple operating system, a text editor, and routines for error discovery and diagnostics. They sold this package for $50 on floppy disks (Turbo Pascal). Thereby Pascal spread immediately, particularly in schools, and it became the entry point for many to programming and computer science. Our Pascal manual became a best-seller.
This spreading did not remain restricted to America and Europe. Russia and China welcomed Pascal with enthusiasm. This I became aware of only later, during my first travels to China (1982) and Russia (1990), when I was presented with a copy of our manual written in (for me) illegible characters and symbols.
Pascal’s Successors
But time did not stand still. Rapidly computers became faster, and therefore demands on applications grew, as well as those on programmers. No longer were programs developed by single persons. Now they were being built by teams. Constructs had to be offered by languages that supported teamwork. A single person could design a part of a system, called a module, and do this relatively independently of other modules. Modules would later be linked and loaded automatically. Already Fortran had offered this facility, but now a linker would have to verify the consistency of data types also across module boundaries. This was not a simple matter!
Modules with type consistency checking across boundaries were indeed the primary extension of Pascal’s first successor Modula-2 (for modular language, 1979). It evolved from Pascal, but also from Mesa, a language developed at Xerox PARC for system programming, which itself originated from Pascal. Mesa, however, had grown too wildly and needed “taming.” Modula-2 also included elements for system programming, which admitted constructs that depended on specific properties of a computer, as they were necessary for interfaces to peripheral devices or networks. This entailed sacrificing the essence of higher languages, namely machine-independent programming. Fortunately, however, such parts could now be localized in specific “low-level” modules, and thereby be properly isolated.
Apart from this, Modula contained constructs for programming concurrent processes (or quasiparallel threads). “Parallel programming” was the dominant theme of the 1970s. Overall, Modula-2 grew rather complex and became too complicated for my taste, and for teaching programming. An improvement and simplification appeared desirable.
Oberon
From such deliberations emerged the language Oberon, again after a sabbatical at Xerox PARC. No longer were mainframe computers in use, but powerful workstations with high-resolution displays and interactive usage. For this purpose, the language and interactive operating system Cedar had been developed at PARC. Once again, a drastic simplification and consolidation seemed desirable. So, an operating system, a compiler, and a text editor were programmed at ETH for Oberon. This was achieved by only two programmers—Wirth and Gutknecht—in their spare time over six months. Oberon was published in 1988. The language was influenced by the new discipline of object-oriented programming. However, no new features were introduced except type extension. Thereby for the first time a language was created that was not more complex, but rather simpler, yet even more powerful than its ancestor. A highly desirable goal had finally been reached.
Even today Oberon is successfully in use in many places. A breakthrough like Pascal’s, however, did not occur. Complex, commercial systems are too widely used and entrenched. But it can be claimed that many of those languages, like Java (Sun Microsystems) and C# (Microsoft) have been strongly influenced by Oberon or Pascal.
Around 1995 electronic components that are dynamically reprogrammable at the gate level appeared on the market. These field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) can be configured into almost any digital circuit. The difference between hardware and software became increasingly diffuse. I developed the language Lola (logic language) with similar elements and the same structure as Oberon for describing digital circuits. Increasingly, circuits became specified by formal texts, replacing graphical circuit diagrams. This facilitates the common design of hardware and software, which has become increasingly important in practice.
Download and run Turbo Pascal in DosBox
Now, if you want to run Turbo Pascal on your Windows 10 machine, you need an virtual environment where MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) can run under Windows.
So, I found DosBox Frontend Reloaded. D-Fend Reloaded is a graphical environment for DOSBox. DOSBox emulates a complete computer including the DOS command line and allows to run nearly all old DOS based games on modern hardware with any of the newer Windows versions.
With DOSBox there is no need to worry about memory managers or free conventional RAM, but the setup of DOSBox is still a bit complicated. The configuration of DOSBox via textbased setup files might be difficult for beginners. D-Fend Reloaded may help and create these files for you. Additionally the D-Fend Reloaded installation package contains DOSBox (including all lanuage files currently available), so there is only one installation to be run and no need to link D-Fend Reloaded with DOSBox manually. Now, install D-Fend following the wizard.
Then, you can download a copy of Turbo Pascal 7.1 from Vetusware.com that collects free abandonware.
After the installation of D-Fend, under your user in Windows 10, you find D-Fend Reloaded folder and in it VirtualHD folder.
Where is the VirtualHD for D-Fend Reloaded?
In VirtualHD folder, create a new folder like TP7 and in this one extract the file from Vetusware.com.
Extract file for Turbo Pascal 7
Now, run D-Fend Reloaded and click on the button Add and select Add with wizard. Skip the first page of the wizard and them you have to select the Program to be started. Click on the button at the end of the textbox and then select TURBO.EXE under BIN under TP7.
Create new profile
Click Next until the end of the wizard. Then, from the list, right-click on the profile you have just created and select Edit. Then, click on DOS environment and check the PATH
Z:\;C:\TP7;C:\TP7\UTILS;C:\TP7\UNITS;C:\TP7\EXE;
Profile editor for Turbo Pascal
Then, you are ready. Double click on the profile and your Turbo Pascal 7.1 is up and running.
Turbo Pascal 7.1
Do you remember the Help? Ok, I know, this is a sign of my age.
