Offers to train you in private, away from the team, so no one sees when you mess up. “We’ll take it slow. I got you.”

If you flinch away from him, he steps back without a word. But he never leaves you alone. He’ll just be nearby, waiting, arms folded, ready when you are.

Tries really hard not to make it about himself but totally relates. His temper used to get the best of him, and he knows what it’s like to feel dangerous.

His first reaction is honestly a bit clumsy like “Hey, it’s not that bad-” before realizing you're actually terrified.

After that, he softens up. Offers to let you “blow off steam” by sparring with him or throwing stuff around in a safe room.

“Better you melt the training room than bottle it up and melt yourself.”

Becomes a super casual big brother type: smacks your shoulder lightly and calls you “kid,” but keeps a close eye on how you’re really doing underneath.

✦ Ava Starr

She gets it. Her powers used to cause her physical pain and instability, and she’s been through the trauma of not being in control.

Very practical. Gets you gear, grounding techniques, breathing tricks. Teaches you how to feel it coming before you spiral.

Also tells you straight-up: “If you hurt someone, we’ll deal with it. That doesn’t make you a monster. It makes you human.”

Doesn’t coddle you, but she’ll guard your reputation from the others if you’re embarrassed.

May or may not sit with you in total silence after a panic surge. Just existing beside you so you know you’re not alone.

Her first instinct is to crack a joke to defuse the tension, but the second she sees your face, she drops it.

“You’re scared, yes? Of yourself? Yeah. Been there.”

Immediately makes it her mission to desensitize you to your own fear. Makes you use your powers with her watching. Not judging, just watching.

She compliments your control every time you improve, even a little: “Very nice. No one exploded today. You deserve a snack.”

Will 100% fight anyone (even other Thunderbolts) if they act weird about what happened. “Don’t talk about them like they’re a loaded gun.”

Kinda loud at first, probably says something like “WHAT HAPPENED? WHY IS ROOM BURNING?” but then immediately gets soft once he realizes you’re scared.

Calls you little nicknames like “malishka” or “tiny storm.” Holds you by the shoulders and just sits with you until your breathing evens out.

Very old-school parental vibe: “You are not monster. You are just... going through puberty. With explosions.”

Tries to relate with stories of how he once lost control. They’re mostly made-up and stupid but weirdly comforting.

Will train with you, let you practice your powers around him, and never flinches. Even if something explodes near his head, he just grins. “Good! You are learning!”

✦ Bob Reynolds

Most emotionally intelligent about it. The second he senses your powers going unstable, he knows what’s going on.

Shows up without fanfare. Sits next to you, doesn’t touch, just offers presence.

“You’re not broken. You’re overwhelmed. There’s a difference.”

Helps you find calm by gently talking about how he deals with the Void, how sometimes fear feeds power, but that doesn't make you bad.

Offers you soft guidance, like how to visualize containing your energy. And if you need a quiet, dim space? He makes it happen, no questions asked.

Genuinely thinks you're brave for not running away from yourself.

💛 . . . John cooking whilst Bob sits on the counter chatting to him. (If anyone else comes into the kitchen they will be glared at for disrupting and god forbid it's Ava who walks in)

🇺🇲 . . . John finding comfort in being Bob's caregiver as he wasn't the best dad before (being absent and distant) with his own kid and using it as a chance to give Bob a good parental figure that he didn't receive.

🩹 . . . Both of them learning together. John's learning how best to be there and to care for Bob whilst dealing with his own guilt of not being there for his son. Whilst Bob is learning how to let himself be loved, to not push away help and care, to not flinch at a firm male presence.

💛 . . . If Bob is particularly panicked (panic attack level) or disassociating John is good at providing a balance of gentle and firm to keep him grounded!!!

🇺🇲 . . . John would buy Bob different trinkets/toys/and other things that reminds him of Bob/or that he thinks Bob would enjoy.

🩹 . . . Bob fiddles with John's dog tags!!!

💛 . . . Once Bob and John have formed a pretty solid bond and the two are comfortable together (not worried about their pasts) Bob would be the absolute worst for being sassy. He constantly (in mostly) good fun gives John *specifically* sass.

🇺🇲 . . . John lets Bob (and probably only Bob) use his things/'gear' that he uses when regressed - comic books, a handful of toys that he definitely doesn't own for himself.

🩹 . . . John takes injuries (even small ones) seriously - no it doesn't matter that Bob is/practically is invincible. Due to Bob's rocky upbringing he is hardly a stranger to injuries and isn't exactly bothered himself but that's something the two of them are working on together - finding a middle ground.

💛 . . . Bob enjoys reading and although he likes being read to he honestly actually prefers reading to John!!!

🇺🇲 . . . John is very tidy (from his military life), Bob grew up keeping things tidy because of his father - however as get started to struggle with depression and drugs that all slipped. I like to think the two of them help each other with an in-between to keep the area clean and not stressful but also not forcing themselves to remain such high levels of neatness (I hope that made sense lol 🤞🏻)

BOOM!!! UNCOMBED CHAPTER 2 BITS!!!

Davrin was having a very good day.  The castle’s roof tiles clicked satisfyingly under his boots as he hooked a hand around a brass spire to swing himself to the next ivy-dripping trellis, the courtyard shimmering with bands of summer heat far below as the sun beat down.  The kingdom of Arlathan was out in full swing, the mountain where the castle was built overlooking a shining sea and the long cobbled road to the village markets below. Red aravel  sails stood out against the sky, flapping in the wind. Herds of halla grazed against the hillsides and carpet of forest beyond, stark white against the green.  Things were going, relatively, according to plan.  He tugged the rope knotted around his waist, its twin twisted around the narrow hips of the young man on the adjacent terrace of mosaic tile and brass. “Get a move on, Tavor,” he called out cheerfully.   “Would you just wait?” the human huffed, navigating the narrow sliver of walkable stone before he’d have to jump to follow Davrin’s path. He paused, raking an olive skinned hand through his short crop of dark hair. Ahead, on Davrin’s other side, Cyrian settled his hands on his hips, his strange angular mask catching the light under his pale cowl.  “We can’t afford delays,” he said sternly, his unnervingly gentle voice firm and uncompromising. He’d become increasingly severe in both expression and countenance these last few days.  “I’m coming, I’m coming, don’t get your knickers in a twist. Not used to heights, is all.” Elek pursed his lips and screwed his eyes shut for a moment, blowing out a heavy breath, before gearing himself up for the little leap. He landed with a yelp, wobbling, and Davrin chuckled as he grabbed a fistful of his shirt to steady the thief.

Emmrich chuckled as he crossed the space to hover over the elf's shoulder, eyes sweeping up the writings with practiced glee. "Impressive! Where did you learn?" "Books mostly. Eht- watch that inscryption-" "Oh, yes, I see. That is cruel." "Too many of these old temple booby traps." "How fascinating! Such vindictive arcitecture." "Yes, well, in light of recent godly events one can hardly be surprised." A grim hum from Emmrich. "Indeed." Rook smiled, falling to the wayside as the elf and the Watcher continued to chatter and trade theories, unravelling old curses and helpful directions. It was hardly surprising to see them get along like thatch on fire. Revas had always been the most academically inclined between the two of them. As the Veil Jumper and the Professor systematically forgot about everyone else in the camp, Rook fell back with Lucanis by the entrance, arms folded as they watched the conversation unfold. Their eyes were soft with fondness. "Your brother?" Lucanis asked, softly, an edge of humor in his voice as he stood profile to the rogue. "Twin," Rook deadpanned. "But we're fraternal, you know?" "Ah." Lucanis continued to watch, a furrow in his brow. "Adopted." "Ah," he said, relaxing with a little more clarity. Rook chuckled. "We've lived together since I was… young. Grew up together. Hadn't spent a day apart until Varric picked me up the day I…" They trailed off, frowning into the middle distance. The memory was clearly painful, and Lucanis winced. "I understand." "Yes?" "Illario is my cousin." Rook started to smile in earnest, closing their eyes with a long sigh through their nose. "Family can be… anything." "It can," Lucanis allowed. With less warmth, but no less fascination. "It can also be a curse." Lucanis chuckled. "To acknowledge a curse is to be affected by it." "Better to think kind thoughts?" "In a sense."

Hannibal and the Mastery of Mindfulness (original post: 7/9/24)

Back when I was watching the C2E2 Hannibal panel, Mads said something pretty interesting that caught my attention.

He says Hannibal is one of the happiest characters he has ever played. He always does things that make him happy and probably walks with a skip in his step because of it. And what more, he’s a man who lives in the moment. That was until he met Will (we’ll get to that part a bit later…). And then it dawned on me that Hannibal has likely gotten away with all the murders he ever committed and managed to live the life he’s had for well over 30 years because he is a master of mindfulness.

Mindfulness in psychology is defined as the following:

Mindfulness is the cognitive skill, usually developed through meditation, of sustaining meta-attention of the contents of one's own mind in the present moment.

Mindfulness has roots in meditation, Hinduism and Buddhism, and is also researched and utilized in the Western world in clinical psychology to treat a variety of psychiatric disorders and even chronic pain. But overall, those who practice and master mindfulness know how to recognize and remain “in the moment”, thus suspending themselves in a state where they can manage the pain of the past and/or lessen their anxieties of the future to come. As a man who lives mostly and purely in the moment, I would say Hannibal is a master of this practice.

For the past 30+ years Hannibal has kept himself busy and has indulged in all things that make him happy. He cooks, exercises, studies and engages in the many arts, and most of all, kills and hunts. He’s always living in the moment and living in bliss in his hedonism. He is truly a master of mindfulness. But just because he’s a master doesn’t mean he’s immune to the changes in his life and environment or being traumatized/re-traumatized. And this is where Will comes in.

Will may have come in like a strong breeze into Hannibal’s life, but he soon became a massive storm that swept Hannibal off his feet. Because for the first time in his life, instead of thinking of the present, he began to think of having a future. The past can be rather painful for Hannibal, but the future is both a place of great anxiety and also a place of infinite hope and excitement. Yet it also became a place of multiple possible tragedies.

Throughout season 1, we’ve seen Hannibal try to adjust to Will’s deductions to cover his tracks, staying true to his practice of mindfulness. However, the more Will gets closer to the truth, we see panic set in, crumbling the peaceful mindset he’s learned to build. By season 2, we see Hannibal become closer to Will, allowing him to open up about his vulnerabilities and his new hopes of the future, but it all came crashing down in Mizumono.

This is the moment where all practices of Mindfulness shattered and so did Hannibal’s mind. We could even argue his heart and soul as well. To be honest, I don’t think he’s ever fully recovered from this and he’s most definitely never been the same. But maybe that’s the point.

Like Will, Hannibal has only continued to change and evolve from who he used to be. He’s broken out of the set lifestyle he made for himself over the last three decades and digs ever deeper into a life of passionate chaos. He puts himself in danger and opens himself up to the possibility of further emotional and mental pain from what Will could do to him. By all logic, it’s madness. But to him, it’s love.

having 2 put a lot of thought lately at work into just like. thinking how best to have coworkers like. do stuff for me. in a way they feel supported in idk. like im not supervising them per se but they're also kinda being thrust at me with the expectation that i get some use out of them. but they DO have other stuff they have to do.

godddd. im gonna have to run a stand up cause every time i keep thinking 'how do i keep us all on the same page and make sure theyre coming to me with issues (because they wont on their own)'

i dont think i am doing a very good job at it so far. gonna have to try and be a bit more uncomfortable and see what i can do. the only balancing thing is it's like. yes. i am having two people put at my disposal, but they dont quite have the context or know-how

like i could go and write more documentation and stuff--but that'll take time, and it needs to get maintained for something that's extremely in flux. so again. it's kinda better to just stay engaged with what theyre doing and hope they ask me questions

i just feel like i am missing some perfect beautiful thing that i can be doing that will make it all mesh nicely--so that they get things theyre comfortable with, that are helpful to me, and overall doesnt require a lot of oversight. but alas.

He’s proud though. Especially when you hold your own in a fight. He always acts like it’s no big deal, but he’s bragging to the others when you’re not around.

Always watching your back, making sure you don’t throw yourself into danger just because you can heal.

Gives you quiet, solid advice like: “The pain still counts. Even if it goes away.”

He never questions your abilities, never doubts you, but he also never lets you carry the weight alone.

He’s all over the place, absolutely thrilled to have a super soldier kid around. He treats you like his protégé immediately.

Tells outrageous stories about his own past, some true, most not.

Becomes super invested in your training but constantly has to be reminded by the others not to go too hard.

He brags about you constantly. "My kid? Very strong. Very brave. They beat three grown men yesterday, I saw it with my own eyes.”

He’s like a chaotic but loving dad who will absolutely wrestle with you in the living room and accidentally break the couch.

Deadpan: “So you’re like Walker. Gross.”

She’s kidding. Mostly.

Yelena respects you immediately. She knows that being a super soldier isn’t about the power, it’s about survival.

Teases you, calls you “little tank” sometimes.

She’s lowkey very protective, though she pretends she’s not.

She’ll always have your back in a fight, and she’s the first to drag you to medical even if you’re healing just fine.

“Regeneration does not mean you get to bleed everywhere like it’s nothing. You will sit still and get cleaned up.”

She gives you practical advice like how to fight dirty and where to hit people when you don’t want to kill them.

Immediately worried about you.

She knows what it’s like to have your body out of your control, even if it’s different.

She’s always checking if you’re in pain, if you’re pushing yourself too hard.

Ava’s one of the few who really understands the mental side of super soldier stuff, especially the trauma that can come with being used.

She teaches you how to phase in and out of attention, how to keep people from knowing you’re hurt until you want them to.

She quietly admires your strength, but she never lets you think you have to prove anything.

“Just because you can heal doesn’t mean you need to break yourself.”

Sweetest with you.

He’s both amazed and worried.

Bob’s always nervous about his own strength and the Void, so he’s extra cautious around you.

He’s probably the best at comforting you when you get overwhelmed by your abilities or by other people’s expectations.

Super supportive, always tells you how well you’re doing.

“It’s okay if you’re tired. Even super soldiers get tired.”

Will always, always be in your corner. He’s the one who understands what it’s like to feel out of control and helps you find ways to feel safe.

He’s not afraid of your powers, but he respects them. He treats you like a real person, not just a super soldier.

I found this video interesting. I don't agree with everything in it, and I think language learning researchers have more input on what works. I'd like to look into the studies he mentioned though, I've only read 1 of them before.

(Mainly I just think... there's tons of people who learn by translations or translation study first - example grammar books and drills in school for a few years - and then get a lot of "comprehensible" input in a language as in talking with people relying on what they initially studied by translating, listening and reading initially relying on mental translation from when they read a lot via translation, who eventually do internalize the target language as just meaning without translation. Like my friend from China who speaks great english, who studied like most students study foreign languages in school, and then watched english shows then eventually talked to people a lot in english at college and at work. Or a ton of other people. I do think doing grammar study and translation explicitly first, can work too - in contrast to waiting to do it for a few months or years. I think either way is fine. Maybe explicit grammar study and translations early on make you make permanent mistakes, or not, I'd have to research it and I'd believe it could cause solidification of mistakes repeated a lot as a beginner if research backs that up. Just like... so many people do learn a language to the point they can read fluently and listen fluently - as in imagine the meaning in real time immediately like in their native language, rather than translating in their head - who initially studied with the grammar/translation lessons typical of many school classes. But I'll leave what's "better" for research to figure out and answer).
