It's a big holiday in the @renegadeguild ! Today is Fanfic Writers Appreciation Day (FFWAD), a day fanbinders spread the love for the amazing writers who share their talents with us. #renegadelovesfic

This is my first time observing, so I may inadvertently leave out some details, but I'm doing my best. lol

My contribution to the celebration is this little quarto-size volume I bound containing one of my all-time favorite Marvel fics, Teeny Tiny OctoTony by mountainrose, with art by my dear @sreppub! I bound it in sewn board format, with diy bookcloth. The endpages have a heart print in honor of my favorite scene from the fic which involves Natasha's bracelet of heart-shaped beads. <3 (fun fact, all 3 copies I bound have heart-print endpages, but each is slightly different!)

Summary: Steve is an ex-gladiator. Tony wears a toga. Together, they litigate civil cases. Also a surprising amount of boating.

Reasons why I love it: Can I just say that I love the title of this fic so much? The double meaning didn't dawn on me until the second time I read it. Anyhow, this fic is chock full of intriguing politics, a truly fantastic take on Ults canon, and Steve confusing the hell out of Tony, all of which I am a huge fan of. I love this fic, and I really hope you give it a shot, if you haven't already!

Humbugs and Heart by MountainRose

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: T Words: 17,583 Tags: Victorian AU, A/B/O, Sentinel/Guide

Summary: Tony's hurt, and there's only one place Jarvis knows he'll be safe. At least they have met the man, or this would be exceedingly awkward. (It's not awkward, Steve would never make this awkward.)

Reasons why I love it: I really love the worldbuilding in this fic – the combination of sentinels and A/B/O is super intriguing, and the way that omega senses work in this universe is fascinating to me. Plus, the way Steve and Tony meet is so sweet, and it makes the hurt/comfort later on in the fic even better. I love this one, and I bet you will too!

Summary: The year is 1930, Prohibition and the Depression are both in full swing, and Chicago Police Detective Steve Rogers has his hands full. There's a dead body on the banks of Lake Michigan, the entire city's legal system is corrupt, and the king gangster of the North Side, Tony Stark, has taken more than a passing interest in him.

Reasons why I love it: While reading this fic I swear I could see it all play out in my head like a black and white whodunit thriller. The setting is perfect, and I especially love the banter between Steve and Tony – they're just as stubborn as they are in canon, and the friction is delicious. Definitely check this one out if you haven't, it's a gem!

What could go wrong? Well, for starters, Hei Xiazi is there.

Liu Sang wiped his nose irritably; if there was some sort of hyper-allergenic mold down here he was going to be livid–

Oh. His fingers and the back of his knuckles were smeared with something dark, and a flash from his flashlight lit it up bright, virulent red.

"Oh fuck, uhh–" he had tissues somewhere, right? Shit, he’d emptied his pockets when he got doused…

"Use this," Xie-ye said, handing him... was that silk? Definitely too nice a handkerchief to bring into a tomb – unless, apparently, your name was Xie Yuchen. "What happened?

"Nothing," Liu Sang said, reluctantly taking the handkerchief. It really was far too nice to get bloodstains all over it, but it seemed it was that or nothing. "No, really," he added as he held the handkerchief to his nose, catching Xie Yuchen's sceptical look. "I didn't hit it, or smell anything, or get anything in my face, or anything like that. It just started bleeding." He shrugged. "It's just a nosebleed. They happen."

“Did you hear anything before it started bleeding?” Hei Xiazi had materialised next to him, holding up some more standard paper tissues.

That triggered a niggling in Liu Sang's mind. There was something he was supposed to do. He shook his head to try to clear it. The door was open. Right. He needed to map the mechanism he could hear.

"Hey, did you hear me?" Hei Xiazi asked, putting something in his hand. What had he said before? Something about listening?

"I'm listening, the floor's hollow–"

"I'm asking you about the bells, Sangsang," he repeated. "Stop listening, put your white noise in."

There were people on all sides now, the medic, and Mop, and Xie Yuchen was touching his shoulder, and they all had nice, solid heartbeats that he didn't want to stop hearing, actually. "No, no, I'm listening–"

There were suddenly too many hands on him. He felt claustrophobic. He tried to bat them away but they kept coming back. Someone forced his earphones in his ears and turned up the white noise, and suddenly the world felt bleak, like he had lost something precious. He needed to listen. Why didn't they understand?

He tasted some warm and salty on his tongue and his knees hurt – had he fallen? Where was the music?

He tried to get up again, but someone had a hand on his shoulder and he just couldn't get the leverage. Warm, sticky, salty, unswallowable something filled the back of his throat and he was going to choke, off, off, get off–

He heaved over onto his side and coughed, violently enough that his ribs ached. In the harsh light-and-shadow, the ground misted red in front of him.

Commentary:  

This fic came about over on the Yucun Discord when Jin suggested cooperatively group-writing a fic just for the fun of it. Well, you can't go wrong with that DMBJ standard, the tomb crawl, and all of us are whump enthusiasts (in fact , I think most of the authors still lovingly refer to this by its working title, Tomb of Whump) so we set out to make our boys suffer and see where the plot took us. Nine months, 176k words, and a whole lot of hurt and comfort later, the entire fic is available to read on AO3!

Hello. I've Been Waiting by j_gabrielle

Non-powered AU where Steve and Tony are in their late 20s and were high school sweethearts, married a year after their graduation - as Steve had wanted to save and then use his own money to buy Tony a ring. Though it hurt him to let Steve go to join the army, Tony knew it would have hurt both of them even more if Steve had stayed at home, miserable. They skype when they can, send emails (and the occasional letter because Steve is old fashioned that way - although Tony will never admit the amount of glee that fills him at seeing the physical envelope in his mailbox), and keep in touch as much as possible.

But there are still the long periods of time when there is no contact, and Tony can't help but worry and fret terribly about his husband overseas. One such period of time, Steve and Tony's friends (Bucky, Rhodey, the rest of the avengers, ya know), are surprised to get a group email from Steve - but happy at seeing that the reason: Steve is coming home early from his tour and wants to surprise Tony.

arei’s thoughts: I’m a sucker for Steve surprises Tony with a military homecoming. Short and sweet and lovely.

arei’s thoughts: this was so cute and the way that Rhodey came into it was really great. Loved it.

arei’s thoughts: tony finding out about steve’s sexual past in a game with the team is a pretty niche trope and one i absolutely adore. Loved this.

Tony swears he is fine. Really.

Sure, he was injured in the battle (only slightly), his suit was shut down after he was hit by some magical beam, crashed into the ground and lost conscious for nearly a day. But he is fine. Totally. Unquestionably.

Except, if he would admit it, he feels like he had gone through a few rounds of boxing with Hulk, while without the suit. He feels dizzy, and the ground seems floating under his every step and his head hurts like hell. But despite all of these, he is fine.

… and has he mentioned he sees Captain America, who should only exist in the comics, standing in his kitchen?

arei’s thoughts: The way things came out slowly and then all at once was lovely. It was clear that something was wrong, but how it played out was just--so nice.

Now if he could only figure out how to tell people that his father, world class neurosurgeon Howard Stark, is locked away in a nursing home with Alzheimer’s, devise a way to get Chief Fury off his back for good, and work out what the hell he’s going to do about the weird on-again-off-again thing he has going with the head of cardio, he’d finally have everything sorted.

Tomorrow (2/15) is International Fanwords Day, so as part of the feedback fest, here's ten recs from my favorited list!

The Untamed. This is a Golden Core Reveal, not so much fix-it as fix the world around it so that everything doesn't go off the rails. It features Cunning Deception, Not So Cunning Deception, Wei Wuxian being gremlin, surprisingly cool LQR, and more Wangxian than Jiang Cheng is comfortable with. Also JGY has a migrane.

Like a House on Fire by KouriArashi. (oooh, I figured out how to do a thing) The Untamed. A modern-world AU non-cultivators rough 9-1-1 fusion fic. Everyone's a firefighter or a paramedic or a cop, Jiang Cheng gets a dog (and she is a Very Good Girl), Jin Zixuan discovers a new and shiny spine, Nie Mingjue just wants his people to be okay, and JGY gets an axe. It's mildly unhinged, it's excellent writing, I love it.

Imprints by Lisa_Telramor. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Wei Wuxian rescues a small innocent baby... whoops that's a dog. Except even if it is a dog, it is still small. And innocent. And helpless. And definitely will die if not helped. Featuring Wei Wuxian and his dog (!!!), poor mental health repair techniques, Yunmeng Bros reconciliation, and Jin Ling despairing over his uncles. This fic is so cute, I cannot even.

By Any Other Name by ShanaStoryteller. The Untamed. Wei Wuxian returns, but it's Not Right, and in a panic he retreats to Lotus Pier. Also known as that 'Wei Wuxian fucks with gender and then everything else' fic. Featuring Lan Zhan having deeply confused thoughts about his sexuality and loyalty to a dead man, Jin Ling gleefully calling Wei Wuxian 'aunt' at every opportunity, Wei Wuxian bitching about careless baby necromancers, a revision of Yi City, and Lan Xichen being So Confused All The Time.

Climbing Up That Coastal Shelf by Sour_Idealist. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Jin Ling realizes _no one_ is keeping an eye on Wei Wuxian. Then he learns what a self-sacrificing idiot his genius uncle is, and decides if no one else is going to claim this guy, he absolutely will because he needs all the help he can get. The Jin sect will never be the same. Featuring the return of Mianmian, So Many Family Feelings, Wei Wuxian scaring the Jin elders, poor communication skills amongst cultivators, and Jin Ling being possessive.

The Sword and the Shield by 29Pieces. Good Omens. A post S1 fic (written when there was only S1), in which Aziraphael is an absolute badass. Featuring the sort of angel where 'fear not' is the sort of reassurance one needs, and Aziraphael isn't saying that.

A Friend of Mine by CowGayKermit. Umbrella Academy. In which Klaus' buddies from Vietnam put 2 and 2 together and get 'that kid on the news is _our Klaus_ holy shit'. Featuring a ton of OCs that have been through shit and don't take kindly to anyone being mean to their brother. It's wild, I love it, I will take a million versions of this please.

Arc Tremors by MountainRose. The Avengers. An old-school post-movie fic where people move into Avengers Tower, this time because Tony failed to hide just how poorly he was doing after the Chitauri rolled through town. Featuring Giant Mutated Seafood, medical drama, everyone gets to be a little over-protective and tetchy (as a treat), and the bots being adorable. I love this era of Avengers fics, I will live here forever.

Shades of Grey Spill From My Veins (bleeding ink all over the page) by Reverie. The Untamed. One of my all-time favs, a What If WWX Grew Up In The Nie Sect fic. Seriously, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much, just read it.

Work Day by Saintlygames. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. So much lovely fluff about two of my favorite boys and their daughter. Honestly, this is just the sweetest. Featuring Thaniel being too competent for his own good, Mori using his powers to spoil his husband, Six tolerating hugs as best she can, and did I mention the fluff? SO FLUFFY I COULD DIE.

There are so many more (for srs, there's at least four more Untamed I could put on here right now, without searching), but this is a good place to start!

Misunderstandings all around, especially given Stark's reputation.

Summary: Wei Wuxian never quite recovers from his brush with death as a child.

Mojo's comments: Oh, fucking hell. I was riveted from beginning to end. This was simply delicious and lyrically written. There wasn't a single bit I didn't love. I know nothing about Nirvana In Fire, but that didn't impact my enjoyment. (I think there were a few character cameos, but nothing more demanding than that.) In which wwx as a child is sick near to death by the time jfm finds him, and cultivates his core more to compensate for his physical frailty than anything else, which sends him down a different path than canon. (At one point, lan qiren watches 'as the world bends a little more under the tiny child's feet', because he is different and strangely powerful. In this world, wwx can be a warrior, when he's got the energy, but he's also a scholar and a strategist, and understands how to accept and appreciate help.

Excerpt: Madam Yu trains him sometimes, fierce and insistent. "Your body is full of qi, learning to put it to your sword should be easy. Try it, now." He is using that qi to breathe, he thinks, alarmed, but there is lots, and it would quite like to be everywhere all the time, so he nods. He flows into the sword form and draws the water in his mind's eye as though ink trails from the top of his wooden sword, gathering extra qi and giving it to the wood like you do to light a candle. The sword comes alive in his hand, no longer dragging behind his grip, but forging ahead and pulling him into the next and the next and the next-- He's left gasping and his core depleted, but he can't help but laugh in delight. Madam Yu grips him by the shoulders, eyes piercing and qi feeling out his. He gathers enough to steady his heart rate, but she can no doubt tell that he's at his limit. "Enough. Good. We will continue tomorrow." He nods, fuzzy headed. "I said enough, let it go now." He drops his grip on his core, letting it return to the depth of his belly, and all the strength goes out of his body. She sweeps him up into her arms and carries him away. He falls asleep before he knows where. The next day, he can hold the qi in his sword a little longer, and it sings to him 'I am here I am here'. He both lags behind the others his age and reaches far out ahead of them. His body feels like a paper shadow, but his core grows huge and wild.

Some Snow Hound sketches from the Yin Yang Masters: Dream of Eternity

I have so much love and feelings for Snow Hound and all of the blame (ie: thanks) goes to MountainRose on ao3. I am so incredibly fond of every single piece of their writing, especially their yym fics and especially how they write and expand on all of the shishen/spirit guardians. Specifically this chapter really kick started my Snow Hound love but really it’s everything.

Next to him, he feels Steve's shoulders stiffen in surprise.

Howard's fist slams loud on the table. "Your husband does not even love you!"

Tony jerks back, burned. He knows that. Knows that Steve did not marry him for love – does not need any reminder of the cold truth, of what he desperately yearns for and can't even hope to have – but the harshness of Howard's words was scalding, and Tony can't afford for this to go any further.

But when he points the Valkyrie downwards to crash into the deep, knowing he is about to die, he spares a few precious seconds to scribble one last message to his possibly-nonexistent, potentially-blind soulmate.

Twenty-five years later, Tony Stark is born with a single phrase on his left forearm written in messy old-fashioned script. And as he grows up, the words never change:

“I love you”

It is both a blessing and a curse.

The file is password protected, but Steve has an eidetic memory and has seen Tony enter it, before -- it would serve Tony right if Steve were to 'hack the hacker' and learn for himself what "Operation Spank Bank" is all about...
