It's insane to me that we never had a Mother's Day episode of Gilmore Girls.
You're telling me this holiday that sparks a lot of emotions when you have a complicated relationship with your mother wasn't tackled? We can't see Lorelai not knowing what to get Emily and struggling with showing her appreciation because that's just not their dynamic? But ultimately getting her something she likes and is lowkey sweet? (Same with Lane and Mrs. Kim, honestly. If it's S2-S3, you can throw in Jess being conflicted over getting Liz something.)
We didn't see Rory going all out for her mom and grandma? Putting together a beautiful brunch for the two of them?
Richard probably operating under "Emily is not my mom so I don't give her a gift" until Rory or Lorelai smack some sense into him.
Where is the Sookie and Luke bonding because both their moms are dead and yet they work in an industry where they have to be "on" and serve other mothers and their children, being reminded of what they don't have?
We were robbed.

We just watched "A-Tisket A-Tasket" again, and I'm thinking about the parallels between Lorelai's and Mrs. Kim's storylines in this episode. Lane is heartbroken because Henry Cho couldn't deal with all the complications of keeping their relationship a secret from her mother, and Mrs. Kim said that this was WHY she had such strict rules about boys! Because she didn't want Lane to get hurt! But then you see her grappling with the revelation that her rules didn't keep Lane safe! All they did was alienate her daughter and make her afraid, and then she got hurt anyway!
And then you see Lorelai wrestling with the same thing. She sees her daughter getting closer to Jess, and her first impulse is to forbid her from interacting with him. It's for her safety! And Emily AGREES with her and tells her that the only way to keep Rory safe is to control everything she does and everyone she interacts with. But here's the thing with Lorelai: she already knows that that won't keep Rory safe. Because it didn't keep HER safe. Because her mother took it upon herself to "be her eyes and her ears" and lock her up if necessary, and all it did was drive Lorelai to secrecy and drive a wedge between her and her mother... and she slept around and got pregnant anyway.
So in the end Lorelai doesn't need to learn what Mrs. Kim learned about being a mother the hard way... Because she already learned it the hard way from being a daughter.
(We can argue about whether either of them really learned this in the LONG RUN, haha, but as an episode arc, it's very striking!)

I recently watched s6ep19 of Gilmore Girls (Lane’s wedding day episode) and. I’m sure other people have pointed this out before but. The way Mrs. Kim talks about how Lane will have to kiss Zack and do “other things” with him with such disgust and horror makes me wonder if she’s just. Asexual and doesn’t know it. Like the whole conversation she has with Lane seems like she just assumes that no one would ever want to or like to do anything sexual, meaning that she doesn’t and never has.
She starts out the conversation with, “Uh...Lane, I have something very upsetting to talk to you about.” The fact that she believes it’s “very upsetting” speaks volumes. And then she goes on to say that, “Marriage is a job, Lane. There are rewards that come with this job, but there are also sacrifices. There are things you're going to have to do.” And she describes those things and sacrifices as “terrible things.” She’s clearly uncomfortable with the conversation but she wants Lane to be prepared, possibly unlike she had been.
She ends the conversation with, “You're going to have to do it with this boy, Lane. You're just going to have to do it. Hopefully if you're lucky like me, you'll only have to do it once.” The fact that she considers that to be lucky makes is what really makes me believe that she’s asexual. The idea of having to do anything at all with a man is horrible for her to think about and she’s happy it only happened once. And yeah you can argue it’s because she’s supposed to be very reserved and very much into purity culture but maybe it’s easier for her because she couldn’t possibly imagine being attracted to someone in that way.
And maybe I’m looking too much into it since it IS a show from the early 2000s but. I think Mrs. Kim is asexual guys. It just makes so much sense to me. Anyway. That’s all, thanks for listening ❤️

Unpopular (?) opinion:
The universe desperately needs a full Gilmore Girls fanvid to Mother Knows Best from Tangled, featuring every mother-daughter pair on the show (sorry Lorelai).

There’s one person we’ve not included in the “take over from Taylor” plot. Mrs Kim.
I feel like if the circumstances were just right - where she was in just the right mood, and someone said just the right thing to/around her - then she would go for it (and could absolutely achieve it).
But generally, I think she’d strongly believe that it’s not her place to be mayor (whether it’s because she’s a woman, or because she feels her place is at the antique shop, I’m not sure).
