Halos are for Angels
mephiston ⋆˙⟡
solspina is mephiposting as a little treat what a surprise
attacked by a mutant and pinned down somewhere she doesn't want to be, reader is hesitantly rescued by a black-winged angel many dread meeting.
word count: 1.9k
warnings: blood, mentions of injury, general 40k stuff
Tumblr media
The cheers from the people of Baal were always deafening, and they always screamed the golden one’s praises.
They sung his name as if he were a divine savior, a messiah, beautiful and glorious. Perfect and untainted and everything in between.
“O’ Sanguinor, O’ Sanguinor!”
The Sanguinor was perfect. The eulogy was beyond deserved.
And so was the contempt, the incrimination of its counterpart. The black angel was everything the Sanguinor wasn’t, everything he couldn’t be. While the Sanguinor was golden and pristine, the black angel was made of ivory skin and breakable bones. One was faultless and one was flawed. One was revered and the other was shunned.
And this was the truth of what he would always b-
A muffled scream tore the lord of death away from his thoughts in an instant.
He’d assumed for a moment that he’d accidentally trampled or stepped on some poor baseline in his absentminded walking through a tribe, but a quick assessment of the area and the clear view of sand underneath his armored boots said otherwise.
His concern grew rather quickly as he searched the surrounding area with his enhanced sight, only to eventually find an incredibly small baseline thrashing and panicking as she remained caged underneath one of baal’s many mutants. It loomed over her, its acidic breath quite clearly blinding her - helping it weaken her struggle - and its mandibles sharpening against themselves as it threatened to pierce a vital organ. One of its sharp appendages had already found a home in the flesh of her shoulder.
He watched her eyes dart around Baal's barren landscape until her gaze locked onto his frame in the near distance, and her tiny baseline hand reached out toward Mephiston. As she stared at him with panicked eyes, he broke free from his confusion and sighed, lifting his boot and stomping it into the ground as to attract the mutant’s attention.
Psychic black wings sprouted from his back, and he ascended into the air with a single thunderous beat before he closed the distance between himself and the altercation faster than the eyes of both inferior beings could fathom. Vitarus rather quickly plunged itself into mutant flesh, ripping and tearing vitae away from its host as it penetrated a sad excuse for mutant skin over and over until the creature's pained noises were just as hoarse as the baseline's screams had become.
The human let out a second, much raspier scream as the mutant fell to the ground. it's mandible ripped from the gaping wound in her shoulder, and the stench of burning dead mutant filled the air as Vitarus exalted itself from its filthy corpse one last time. Both the sight and scent were putrid even to the Lord of Death, but better a dead mutant than a living one.
She sobbed as he approached and her tears mixed in streaks with the dust of Baal on her cheeks. With desperate effort she attempted to scramble away but could not move her arm without immense, searing pain. Regardless of whether or not she wanted to flee the savior she had prayed for, the agony was too great to bear and she winced with every slight contraction of muscle.
“I- I’m sorry my lord, please don’t-“ She stammered, eyes wide with fear and voice filled with choked desperation as Mephiston's much larger body cast a shadow over her.
He placed a single one of his fingers over his lips in a silencing yet deliberate gesture before crouching down and igniting his hand with warp energy. His gaze never left her eyes as he brought his hand closer to her bleeding shoulder, and her breath hitched at the idea of the oncoming pain soon to flood her wound.
The agonizing pain she had expected, though, was instead a feeling of soothing warmth accompanied by a soft hum emitting from the hand that touched almost delicately where she had been hurt. She watched in horror, or perhaps awe, as her flesh began to mend itself underneath the touch of her savior.
He said not a word as her sobs of pain faded into soft hiccups and the searing sensation upon her skin became nothing more than light tingling. When he finally withdrew his hand from her shoulder, she hesitated for a moment before testing her repaired limb - shocked to find that she could move without pain. The only evidence that remained was the blood staining her shirt and skin, both of which dried rather quickly under Baal's red sunlight.
"Thank you..." She blinked up at him, her tears still glistening in the corners of her eyes, but her gaze held nothing more than gratitude.
“You need not thank me.” Mephiston replied, taking note of her absence of fear. “Let us get you home. I have no more time to stall.”
His expressionless face and monotone replies came in great contrast to her newfound bubbly and vibrant demeanor. Despite this, she followed him without hesitation the moment he turned from her and began the short walk back to the village in which she resided.
She dug through her bag as the two of them walked. Mephiston took long and purposeful strides in front as she trailed hurriedly behind in order to keep his pace. In her fingers, she worked hastily with a small bundle of flowers she had retrieved from a small compartment in a bag she carried with her. Occasionally, she gazed up at the lord of death to make sure he had not turned to question her or view the object in her minuscule baseline hands.
Oblivious to the mortal behind him, Mephiston contemplated for a moment how a baseline had managed to get this far without anyone noticing her disappearance. Tribes on Baal were typically exceptional at keeping track of their members, especially considering the loss of one could mean a complete shift in the way of life for many. There would be a new role to fill, a family without a mother or daughter, a meal that could be distributed to those left hungry or sick. Her survival was a mystery almost as much as her unnoticed disappearance was, and a piece of him felt incredibly fortunate that his absentminded stroll had led him directly to her before something more catastrophic could have occurred. One thing he knew for certain, though, was the feint scent of the flowers she carried. He hoped she had not been so foolish as to come into the wilderness seeking them and them alone.
It hadn’t been long before the village came into view again. It stood safe and close enough for the baseline following behind Mephiston to return home without his immediate assistance, but far enough that the two of them were not yet visible amongst the irradiated desert haze.
“Not far now.” Mephiston spoke before turning to face the tiny mortal behind him. “Should be close enough for you to go on your own-“
In her hands she held a large ring of flowers, all carefully tied together in elaborate knots at their stems until they had formed a perfect circle. Her arms were extended, as if she were offering him her creation. The flowers did not have terribly much variety - none of Baal's flora did - but the Lord of Death still stood quite stunned at how many of them this baseline had managed to safely gather and keep in good condition.
“What’s this?” He asked, as he raised a curious eyebrow to convey interest in the item.
“A flower crown! You wear it on your head!” She exclaimed, her eyes lit with innocence and excitement at the opportunity to present him with a gift.
Mephiston reached out to take the circlet of flowers from the baseline’s hand, but hesitated for a moment before he pulled his hand back inward and rested it at his side. “I am no royalty, baseline.” He claimed, stern but not unkind.
“Hmm,” She hummed and dropped her head in disappointment. Her expression fell for only a moment before her eyes lighting up near immediately “A flower halo, then, since you’re one of the emperor’s angels!”
“More fitting, I suppose.” He replied before extending his hands again to grab the halo that she quickly snatched away. A playful grin teased at her lips as she looked him in his deep and sunken eyes.
“Can I…?" She began.
“You are asking me to kneel?” He asked, and earned a small nod from her. His eyebrows arched in mild surprise at both the implication and the audacity. “I cannot-“
“I won’t tell a soul, my lord.” She promised, eyes still sparkling with genuine excitement and something akin to honor.
He sighed and shook his head as a slight hint of embarrassment flashed briefly across his usually stoic features. With a deep breath, he dropped to one knee and then onto the other. His armor purred underneath his robe as his knees moved to touch the sands of Baal. He bowed his head to a height that was within reach of the baseline in front of him, and the humility he felt clawed at his very soul.
She took only one tentative step forward before he heard her nervous hummingbird heart start pounding with nervousness, and he felt the delicate flowers make contact with his scalp. The halo was a perfect fit, as was the tenderness he felt in her gaze as he raised his head to resume eye contact with her. Without a word or warning, she gently cupped both sides of his gaunt face and pressed her lips delicately against his own.
She backed away near immediately, a mischievous smile covering her face as she bowed deeply to him before giggling at his stunned state, With a sudden burst of energy, she turned and began to sprint back to the village before he regained awareness of what had occurred.
Mephiston still sat kneeling in the sand, but his jaw had fallen slack, and his lips slightly parted to reveal the tips of fangs that hid behind them. He had not felt this many uncontrolled thoughts race through his mind since he had crossed the rubicon primaris.
He had been kissed?
The moment his thoughts finally settled, it had become his turn to allow a rare smile at something. For a moment, the Lord of Death swore he had felt his heart become a little softer, and though he hated feeling surprised he did not feel that this in particular was unwelcome. He wondered if Sanguinius had heard his mind's silent pleas for a taste of what the Sanguinor experienced from baselines. Perhaps even the angel knew that it would not be unfair to allow him this one small kindness.
She turned her head over her shoulder to face him one last time as she walked away, and he allowed his eyes to emit their powder blue light as he spoke into the warp, a silently whispered "I hope we meet again" that he prayed she too could hear.

X-Men hating X-Force
After their effectiveness tracking Cable and destroying Predator X in Messiah Complex, Cyclops commissioned X-Force as a proactive black ops squad. They handled threats like The Purifiers, The Legacy Virus, Bastion, Marauders, The Right, etc. Anyone with genocide on their mind.
Tumblr media
Word got out and many X-Men were horrified to the point of leaving - but why?
Tumblr media
Nightcrawler and Psylocke (ironically) figured out something was being kept from them and that Cyclops knew about it. Laura doing a spot of lethal torture tipped them off and Betsy confirmed it telepathically. Kurt, especially, was not happy. He died shortly after, which exacerbated everyone's emotions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ugh. Greg Land.
After Second Coming and the defeat of many of the more dangerous genocidal agents, folks had time to think. Despite fighting ten different wars at once with fuck all outside assistance (and definitely none from the state,) certain folks made clear their objections to killing in general. Storm asked Scott what Jean would think and we never get an answer on that one. Jean was dead for this 'darkest hour' period after M-Day though she did join Krakoan X-Force to be 'smart, swift and violent.' The canonisation of St Jean was often used as a symbol and rhetorical device, but I have to wonder how she'd behave in the same circumstances.
Xavier, upon sensing no remorse from Scott, looked at him like a stranger. I guess secret drastic action is only okay when he does it - like The Illuminati, or the secret team that didn't come back from Krakoa, or his entire career. It's not always a bad thing, but it often is. The existence of the Xavier Protocols makes his stance a little hypocritical IMO, and that was plans for killing allies not proven ruthless enemies.
It's easy for him to say 'I never wanted this for you' while admitting he's facing every nightmare scenario at once - a multi-front war of genocide. With stakes like that, how do you not kill people? Victory came with a high cost and was a close thing, without X-Force they definitely would have lost. All mutants dead, but with their conscience intact. Somehow I doubt the kids would find comfort in that.
Tumblr media
Storm and Logan are processing Kurt's death and the revelation of X-Force hangs in the air. Logan is full of self loathing, and frankly, Storm is full of shit. Their enemies are genocidal monsters who deliberately target children. The Purifiers have lynched mutants, blown up a school bus, and so much more. Their mission hadn't changed at all - in fact they were escalating and joining Bastion plus every other hate militia for a final attack. The state is unwilling or unable to stop them - waiting around for them to attack again, especially with kids on the island, is suicidal.
Heroes don't kill, except when they do. Most heroes aren't constantly at war without a safety net either. Would it be ethical to be the last mutant alive fighting every threat alone, thinking 'at least I didn't kill anyone' as Nimrod tears your heart out? As The Purifiers crucify Academy X, or the Sapien League releases the Legacy virus mark 3? I don't think so. None of them want war, but war wants them.
Tumblr media
Hank, of course, leaves. Now that most of the extinction threats are gone he can hang out in Avengers Tower or chill at home without being worried about a robot from the future killing him or his remaining putative students.
Tumblr media
I don't say this very often but Namor is right. Fuck Hank's conscience. He's no stranger to opting out of mutant affairs, and in a different story that'd be a viable choice. The X-Men exist in a world of heroes where an endless parade of very dangerous entities specifically want to kill them all. They act as heroes often, but are they actually allowed to be? I'd say no. Especially post M-Day, every threat to mutants is a genocidal one - a war.
Tumblr media
Could X-Force have been better? Of course. Would it be nice to have the luxury of traditional superheroics or pursuing a normal life? Definitely. Would the world be better off without X-Force? Depends on whether you value mutant lives. In the sixties, X-Force would be considered a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. As a long running franchise the X-Men's enemies experienced power and motivation creep to the point that they're at war no matter what they do. Ethics are nice to hold onto, but so is breathing. So are the lives of children in your care. If they waited they'd be dead, so these mutants may not like X-Force, but they should probably say a prayer to it for removing the threats that would destroy the school (again) and everyone in it
Scott's assessment is pretty accurate here. Unlike The Avengers, The X-Men aren't a government sponsored team - the government frequently tries to wipe them out. Unlike the Fantasic Four, the X-Men are mostly despised by the public. The other super teams are fickle allies at best.
They've always been a team with a school, and a school means children. How many children need to die before a policy of reactiveness becomes naive? How many genocide attempts or successes before you classify it as a war? The Avengers fight Kang or Ultron or whoever and that's great for them. The X-Men would be helping if they weren't attending funerals, raising mutant children because nobody else will, and fighting for their lives against the countless parties who want every single mutant dead. They don't get the choice most of the time, and when they do it's often because there're other mutant teams doing what they won't.
If the narrative wants to convince me that lethal proactivity is unethical, including unwavering enemies that won't stop until all mutants are gone was a mistake. Putting Norman Osborn in charge of national security, who included mutant existence as a threat to that was a mistake. But they did, and we all have to play the hand we're dealt.
Many of the mutants who objected to X-Force were powerful or well-trained enough to protect themselves non-lethally. What about those who aren't? The X-Men came to the Morlocks' rescue, but it's called the Mutant Massacre for a reason. In a story where endless forces want every mutant dead - which becomes more true every year - fighting a limited and bloodless reactive war is a luxury.

Bestie pls tell me all of ur indigoblood and clown church headcanons!! :o)
I always have trouble pinning this kind of thing down to a list! Everything I can name feels either too vague or too specific. But I'll try!
longtime readers will know I'm absolutely into different facepaint designs having different meanings, and the intimacy/sanctity of the Bare Face eue
I really enjoy the concept of the church as a group being weirdly supportive and protective of each other compared to most trolls. like they'll still kill each other, but trolls of other colors find their comparative attachment to each other deeply unnerving.
Religious practice is largely by The Vibes both for the practitioners and also for me the author lol. Church services? sure! Confession? I guess! Patron saints and saint prayers? If you like that kind of thing. Ritual sacrifice? Yeah man! Orgies and mass intoxication? Why not?
Seadwellers have the monopoly on gold jewelry as a sign of status--highblood fashion is rainbow fabric/stones, silver and jet. Gold on a clown is usually a quadrant symbol from a seadweller--a fairly rare event because:
(I feel like this is at least partially textual but) violet seadwellers and highbloods have a contentious relationship and frequently clash RE: who's the bigger top bitch. Despite the hemospectrum being in the seadwellers' favor, this is a pretty evenly-matched contest (see: Dualscar vs the GHB)
The GHB position technically comes down to deadly combat, but there's a certain amount of democratic input in that if the church or empress don't like you, you can definitely win and then promptly get quietly assassinated.
Despite "candy/mutant red" and "lime green" as blood colors both being taboo or carrying baggage in some way, those colors are often represented in holy art and paintings, because those are the colors of the Messiahs--red for rage and green for mirth. Spirals, smiling/snarling masks or faces, and twining snakes also feature heavily.
Finally, I'll point you toward this post, which covers a lot of less general stuff not covered in this list lol.

i thought the reason why the dolorosa wouldve been executed is because she chose to raise a mutant grub (that became the troll messiah and inspired rebellion) not because she was being motherly? i guess i might not understand jadeblood roles but i thought the whole point was taking care of grubs + the mothergrub before a lusus took them in
a good question but actually no!
despite popular fandom belief jade's duties did not originally involve caring for the wigglers -- just the mother grub.
Tumblr media
jadebloods are strictly meant to "serve the mother grub"; and they seemingly do not even interact with the wigglers all that often, since she "found him on an errand" during a "chance encounter", rather than him already being assigned to the jade's care.
(there's also other bits in the commentary where hussie refers to jadebloods not as wiggler caretakers but as servants of the mothergrub)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
basically it's pretty well established that wherever the grubs are kept is separate from the jades, or at least, they don't tend to them whatsoever, lol

Lotta bad things about Krakoa but the rehabilitation of the characters of Exodus and Apocalypse is something I particularly hate. Making a French crusader and Eugenics: The Character be increasingly sympathetic, increasingly correct in their worldviews without ever analysing or criticising or changing their core beliefs is genuinely so disgusting to me. It's especially fucked in the case of Exodus, because one of the earlier scenes of Krakoa is him telling a story to villainise Wanda Maximoff before impressionable mutant children, with the underlying implication that he is using these children as a power source for his abilities, which can easily tie in to him representing European Catholic colonialism as a former crusader, which in turn can represent the real life atrocities and abuse the Catholic Church has inflicted on young children throughout the years, as he turns them against this mentally ill brown woman to the point of which her name becomes a slur. And all of that was just dropped, and he instead started going around talking about this Random White Woman is the Messiah of the Promised Land to the Holy People on our ethnostate. Very normal politics!

Top 20 X-Men stories as voted by r/xmen.
I'm not on Reddit but the X-Men subreddit recently voted for their top 20 X-Men stories over 20 days. That generated a lot of interesting and refreshing comics discussion rather than the standard shipping wars and memes you usually see on there.
The result is a very solid list and I think it would be very hard to argue against the top 5 entries. Particularly IMO God Loves, Man Kills is absolutely #1 for the X-franchise and Dark Phoenix Saga is absolutely the runner up. Also, the lack of Whedon and Bendis pleased me.
Personally there are a few things I would change with the most glaring that I don't think Messiah Complex is Top 20 and either X-Tinction Agenda, Welcome to Genosha, Fatal Attractions or X-Cutioner's Song should be there. I also think AoA, Fall of Mutants and Wolverine are too low.
Another very valid point made by a Reddit poster was that the list would miss out on the quiet comics (since it's a "greatest hits" list) such as the Scott/Jean wedding, the Thanksgiving issue (UXM 308), the pancakes issue (UXM 337) or X-Aminations.
All in all, a solid list and a great way to generate such interesting discussion.

There is very little that makes me feel as ridiculous as trying to figure out what is ‘common knowledge’ about the Grey/Summers family.
(By ‘common knowledge’, I of course mean ‘things I can expect an average comics fan to know’. ‘Cyclops exists’ probably isn’t common knowledge, even if we limit things to a North American audience.)
Like, do people know Maddie exists? Do they know Mr. Sinister created her? They probably know Jean Grey was the Phoenix, right? But do they know who Apocalypse is? Do they know about Mr. Sinister’s obsession with Scott, or Cable’s obsession with destroying Apocalypse?
Do people know about the time travel? How much of the time travel? They probably know Rachel was born in the future, right? Actually, is Rachel someone people know about? I’m mildly obsessed, but I was also reading during one of her more prominent periods. Do they know how much SHE time travels? Okay, that’s silly, NOBODY knows about how much she time travels.
How many clones do they know about? Maddie, hopefully. But Stryfe? Nate Grey got a comeback for a little bit, but it WAS just in New Mutants, do people know about him?
How many alternate reality children? Rachel, right? Again, what about Nate? Do they know about Hope Summers? I’m not going to be ridiculous and ask about the really obscure kids, but when do they start being ‘really obscure’? Megan Summers is firmly over the line, right? And Ruby?
Baby Nathan Summers got a disease that was turning him into a robot and that’s why Cable has a metal arm. Is that something that requires more explanation? His alternate reality sister from the future came back in time and then went to a DIFFERENT future, started a cult, and set him up as messiah. How much of that needs context? Some of it, but WHICH PARTS?
Do I need to get into Ship/Prosh/Professor? Nobody wants that, do they? No, they CAN’T.
… But it WOULD let me explain the bodyslides!
… I don’t need to explain the bodyslides.
… But I put SO MUCH WORK into figuring out the bodyslides!
-
At least with the Bats I can check how many Robins someone knows about and then have a pretty solid guess about what I can say. Where do you even START with these dudes?

As the remaining Quiet Council are discussing family matters and their plans on going home, Kafka the winged mutant boy overhears the conversation and starts to have doubts. Kafka eventually talks to Exodus about his doubt about how the rest of the mutants may have to stay behind in White Hot Krakoa while some of the mutants are selected to go home (and fight Orchis). The Quiet Council and the chosen mutants prepare for a ritual which Mister Sinister empties a vial of Cypher's genes into the pool so that Krakoa could help them in teleporting the mutants back home. The Krakoan vines wrap around Mister Sinister & the mutants and turns them into buds. Hope Summers remains behind on White Hot Krakoa as she reminds herself that she has to bring Phoenix Force back and she has some Messiah shit to do. Back on Earth, Apocalypse is dragging Krakoa-Treant back to Krakoa island when the chosen mutants pop right out of the flowers.
Much later, Hope Summers is having much difficulty in dealing with the Phoenix Force and Jean Grey. In order to save all of mutantkind and resurrect both the Phoenix and Jean Grey, Hope alongside the help of Legion (as the talking Hope Gun) shot the Phoenix with the consequence being her sacrificing herself in the process. Jean and the Phoenix have come back but Hope is gone. Meanwhile, the mutants are fighting the Stark Sentinels on the ruins of Krakoa island when Exodus, Destiny and Mystique teleport in. The Hope Sword is back in Nightcrawler's hands. Even though Destiny hugs Nightcrawler after some getting her motherly memories back from Xavier, she gives the bad news - Hope Summers is dead. Exodus at first doesn't believe it then announces that Hope has returned to whence she came. "The word made flesh, the flesh made immortal. She is with Krakoa in exile in spirit." Nightcrawler says the Krakoan mutants are trapped in the White Hot Room, lost forever. But Exodus, returning to the fight and attacking a Sentinel, says the people of Krakoa will return, that the Krakoan age will come again. Nightcrawler asks Destiny if they can win but she still sees no victory.
The Krakoan mutants including the Five minus Hope and Jumbo Carnation are stuck in the White Hot Krakoan Room arguing around a table trying to figure out how they will function, who will do what, etc. Little Kafka gets annoyed and tells everyone to shut up. He tells the room that they have to be better than this, that they have no rulers, no leaders, no heroes. That they have to be the Quiet Council and that means they have to listen. He takes charge and starts working to assign tasks such as food supply, tutoring, teaching. It's a bittersweet last page as that little hero is determined to make Krakoa, despite being lost in the White Hot Room.

The trapped Krakoan mutants in the White Hot Room reminds me of the ending of Drifting Classroom manga when the elementary school students in the bad future dimension cannot go home after several tries. So the trapped students decide to stay and work together in the ruined future to build a new civilization.
