Tsukishima loves to tease the shit out of you, and that hasn’t really changed since you started getting bigger. But now, he’ll hide your cravings in the top shelves of the pantry so you have to make him come get it. He can’t help it, it’s that angry pouty look in your eyes - he’s so in love with you, even when you look like you’re about to murder him.
But despite him hiding everything you could possibly crave, he is an absolute sweetheart. He calls his mom every now and then to update her about you and the baby, probably asks about what she liked when she was pregnant. She tells him stories about liking to read to him and his brother, or how she enjoyed a nice bath if she was particularly sore that day. She even joked that she found it really hard to put her shoes on so typically she just wore slippers or easy to slip on shoes.
Cut to the next day, you wake up to Tsukishima reading a book of dinosaur facts to your belly. He’s not so much reading it as he is disputing and/or explaining further the facts that are written in it. He doesn’t notice you wake up while he waves away the book and states, “It’s fine. When you’re here, I’ll just bring you to my museum and I’ll show you in person. I can sneak you out of daycare, just don’t tell your mom.”
You had hoped to be able to keep your independence for longer than this, but found yourself struggling to properly put on your shoes. You huffed, muttering something to your unborn kid about how you’d hold this over their heads forever, and just waddled about with the backs of your shoes folded under your heel. Tsukishima raised an eyebrow as he noticed, waiting for you to sit down in the car before holding the door open and bending down to properly put your shoes on.
“Kei, what’re you doing?” You laughed, watching him swiftly tie up your laces. “They’re fine, they’re old shoes anyways.”
“If you wear your shoes like that, you’ll fall and hurt yourself,” he shrugged. “I can’t have you hurting the little Tsukishima just because you can’t put your shoes on.”
His expression was the same plain emotionless face as usual, but you smiled anyways because here he was, kneeling in front of you and helping you with what is supposed to be a simple task.
The day went on as usual, but you definitely weren’t prepared for your husband to call you into the bathroom and display the little bath he had drawn you with your favourite candle lit.
“Did you do something?” You asked him with narrow eyes, making him scoff.
He rolled his eyes, helping you out of your clothes gently, “Am I really such a bad husband that you think I’d have to be feeling guilty to be nice to you?”
You thought about it for a moment before nodding playfully, “Yup. So what did you do?” You laugh and he just flicks your forehead before helping you into the tub.
You watch as he smirks a bit, holding your chin for a second and watching your eyes, “Well I’m the reason you got knocked up so I supposed I have to take care of you don’t I?”
He doesn’t hold that sultry teasing look on his face for too long, especially when you splash him with water, drenching every part of him you could reach 😂.
Tumblr media
Bokuto is in a PANIC the closer you get to the due date. You once just felt a bit tired after vacuuming and the boy thought you holding your front meant you were going into early labour.
“I’VE GOT THE CAR KEYS BUT I CAN’T FIND MY WALLET!!! BABE HAVE YOU SEEN NY WALLET? I CAN’T REMEMBER WHERE I PUT IT. OMG WHAT IF THEY WONT TAKE US IN. WHAT IF THERE ARE SO MANY BABIES BEING BORN WE CANT GET IN. I KNEW I SHOULD’VE TAKEN A CLASS ON BIRTHING BABIES!”
You let him run around because he honestly is so entertaining to watch while panicking. He pouts about it later, talking shit about you to your belly, “Your mom’s a big meanie. You need to be born quick so we can team up on her okay?”
“Kōtarō! Don’t you dare try to turn my baby against me!” You laughed, swatting at his head.
Man is overly prepared for any sort of situation. He already set up all the safety baby measures, like corner cushions and outlet covers, though now he’s considering locking up all the knives into a cupboard.
“Kōtarō... how am are supposed to cook like this?” You asked, raising an eyebrow at the lack of your sharp cooking knives.. and the butter knives.
The grown man just poured some more, “I gotta keep both my babies safe alright? I’ll cut everything for you so you don’t cut yourself.”
Except for the fact that Bokuto is definitely more accident prone than you are and has a few bandaids on his fingers now.
As an expecting dad, Bokuto found himself getting more and more teary eyed at any situation that involved a family or a baby. Whether that was just seeing kids and families play in the park that the two of you walked past sometimes, or seeing a commercial for diapers with happy bouncy babies, you would turn to see a misty-eyed Bokuto who would then turn to you and wrap you in a tight squeeze.
He was beyond excited at this point to meet your little baby - he wanted to know what they would look like. The perfect mix between the most perfect woman in the world and him, who was pretty cool thank you very much. This baby was going to be the cutest most amazing kid ever, who would definitely play a really great game of volleyball, Bokuto was sure of it.
Let’s be honest though, pregnancy is not an easy journey. Bokuto loved seeing you grow the baby but he knew that it was a difficult process for you. You were always sore and at the beginning you were always sick. And there were some days where you literally didn’t feel attractive or beautiful at all, but Bokuto would praise you as high as he always did regardless.
“You are the most perfect lady I have ever laid eyes on. The most gorgeous being to ever walk this universe!” He told you one day, pressing kisses all over your face as you laid across a couch.
“Thanks,” you tried to give him a smile - you always appreciated his compliments, even if you didn’t necessarily agree.
“What’s wrong?” He asked you with a small frown, noting your forced smile.
“I just… feel bleh. Not at all like how you’re saying I look,” you admitted with a small smile.
Bokuto’s eyes grew wide in shock, jumping over the couch to sit down on the floor next to you. He clasped your hands in his, pressing kissing to them gently as well. “I know you might not feel it… but I hope you know that I still think it. I don’t even have to force it. You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met, and that hasn’t changed even though your body is changing a bit. I don’t need you to wear the most perfect makeup or the best dress for me to think you’re gorgeous. You’re perfect just laying here in my old sweats and I’m happy that I get to come home to see you like this every day,” he grinned, touching your cheek affectionately.
You loved this man. He was so sweet to you in every way possible. But sometimes…. sometimes his sweetness just went a little too overboard. You tried to insist to him that you were pregnant but that didn’t mean you couldn’t do anything. Man refuses to let you do anything for yourself. No lifting boxes, no lifting anything in fear that you might hurt your back.
“Kōtarō, it’s just my purse,” you tried to point out in a laugh, trying to reach it as he held it above your head.
“Nope! Not happening. What if you hurt yourself?”
“... with my purse?”
“Ya!”
“Kōtarō, I have to go shopping for food or we won’t have anything to eat. And baby needs to eat!”
“Well I’ll come with you then!”
“You’ve got practice!”
“It’s fine, I’ll tell them I’ll practice another time! My perfect wife and baby come first,” he’d grin at you and insist on opening all the doors as you two made your way to the car. You fall in love with this man more and more every day, even if he keeps stealing things from your hands.
Tumblr media
Ushijima is a really nervous new dad, even if you can’t really tell from his stoic expression. He listens intently to all of the parenting advice people give, bought a few books about newborns, and has hundreds of tabs on his laptop of ranging topics from baby products people insist are necessary, mommy blogs about what is important to do when pregnant, and research that he doesn’t quite understand but feels is important nonetheless.
Ushijima isn’t necessarily a man of words all the time, so you were surprised to find that he started to talk a lot more after finding out that your child could hear him.
“You don’t have to play volleyball if you don’t want to,” he told them quietly one day while the two of you were on the couch. It came so out of the blue that you actually thought he was talking to you.
“Hm?”
“... do you think they’d want to play volleyball?” He asked you sheepishly, glancing at you with a shy expression.
You thought about it for a moment and slowly started to smile, “Well they’ll be attending every single one of your games so I’m sure they’ll be at least interested in learning!”
Ushijima nodded and you watched as a soft smile graced his face. You kept your eyes on him for just a moment longer, seeing a flicker of uncertainty on him.
“Wakatoshi, don’t you dare think for one second you’ll be a bad dad,” you warned him, poking his side and making him jump from surprised.
He stared at you for a moment, blinking, “You know what I’m thinking?”
“I know that you’ve been worried about being a good dad ever since I told you I was pregnant. I know that you’re nervous about being the kind of dad you always wanted to have growing up. I know because I’m terrified of being a good mom too,” you admitted with a nervous sort of smile, interlacing your fingers together. “We’ll be okay together though.”
Ushijima nodded and hummed softly, “We’ll have to take them to France.”
“France??”
“Satori wants to meet them too. He said he would make them chocolate.”
It wouldn’t just be the baby that Satori is constantly trying to spoil, but you as well. He sends over packages of his chocolate for you to try, grinning ear to ear when you call him for a catch-up call.
“Do you like them?” Tendō asked, and you could hear him humming to himself as he moved around a kitchen.
“I love them! But you’re going to make us fat if you keep sending them! They’re much too yummy for me to stop eating!” You laughed, eyes wandering to the kitchen where you knew you still had a few bits of his chocolate left.
“No no no no. I’m just trying to make sure your baby is a cute healthy plump baby! They’ll grow nice and strong!”
It always made you smile, knowing that all these people who loved your husband wanted to love you and the baby as well. Even Ushijima’s new teammates would come by and bring snacks or anything they thought might aid you in your pregnancy. Though, Kageyama wasn’t really sure what pregnant people or babies liked, so he just brought a whole bag of the milk boxes he liked.
“You’ve got to grow big and strong so that I can defeat you in volleyball one day. I can’t defeat your dad right now… cause he’s on my team. But I’ll defeat an Ushijima one day for sure,” he muttered to your belly with a fierce intensity in your eyes that made you laugh, making his ears turn red as he realized that you also heard him (Kageyama, the baby is attached to her, of course she heard you lol).
As it neared your due date, Ushijima prepared himself mentally every passing day. He wanted to be 110% ready so he went over your birthing plan mentally at least 10 times a day and reread over all the articles and information he had gathered over the months. He wanted to be the best father possible, but you insisted to him that you weren’t worried about this at all. After all, he was already the best husband you could ever have asked for.

Pulling Izzy out of daycare dramatically lessened the amount of time she could spend with her friends, so the situation needs extra attention on her socializing. You’ve been trying to take her to the park as much as possible so she could meet with kids her age and Harry has been arranging a lot of playdates for her with her friends from daycare.
When you come back from meeting your brother for lunch on a Sunday, you are greeted with not two, but eight little feet running around the living room, many of Izzy’s toys have been brought downstairs and the coffee table is filled with fruits, snacks and drinks for the kids. You know the two little guests, it’s Yara and Zac, the three of them were like a little gang back when Izzy was attending daycare. Yara’s moms and Zac’s mom are sitting on the terrace, letting the kids roam around freely, Harry is in the kitchen preparing some sandwiches for the guests when you arrive back.
“Hi, do you need help with anything?” you ask, catching his attention.
“Oh, hi! No I’m fine, thank you. How was lunch with your brother?”
“Great,” you smile at him before leaving him to do whatever he has to do.
“Miss Y/N!” Yara greets you, waving in your way while munching on an apple slice.
“Hello Yara, Zac,” you smile at them before walking out to the terrace to greet the parents. “Hi! Ava, Saige, it’s nice to see you again. And Linda, hello!”
“Y/N, hi! Harry told us you might return soon, so good to see you!” Ava greets you as you join them at the table. They’ve been the nicest parents while you were working at the daycare, though you weren’t the only victim of the closed-minded cowards that got you fired. Ava and Saige have faced quite a lot of backlash for basically daring to be a same-sex couple out in the open. You’ve heard many complaints from other parents about how they don’t want them to pick up their daughter together. Apparently, it’s confusing for the kids to see two women to be the mothers of the same child. Ridiculous.
“I was out having lunch with my brother. How have you been?”
“Things are the same, you know,” Saige shrugs with a scowl. “But your firing has got us thinking about pulling Yara out as well.”
“Oh!”
“Yeah, it’s starting to get really ridiculous. I mean it’s one thing that we get weird looks, but firing you was kind of the last straw,” Ava nods.
“And how have you been here, Y/N? How is working for Harry?” Linda asks.
“Oh, it’s amazing, really. I love taking care of Izzy, she is so easy to handle and I love seeing her learn and grow. And Harry is a great boss, I got really lucky.”
“Lucky indeed!” Ava smirks, making them all laugh as you feel yourself blushing. “Even I sometimes dream about the man,” she adds, keeping her tone down.
“How do you keep your cool?” Linda sighs. “If I had to live with this man, I would go nuts.”
“Well, Izzy keeps me pretty busy, and he is my boss, so…”
“It’s not like HR would be up your ass if you got involved,” Saige shrugs, taking a sip from her iced tea.
You don’t get to react, the kids run out, taking over the playground, Harry arriving right behind them with a plate filled with sandwiches for the guests.
“Ladies, sorry for the wait,” he smiles, placing the food to the table as he joins your little circle.
“Oh Harry, thank you so much!” Ava sighs, grabbing one already. “We were just talking to Y/N about how big of an upgrade it is for her to work here.”
“Is it?” he asks, slightly surprised as he glances over at you.
“I mean, the paycheck is better and it’s clearly a better environment,” you chuckle shrugging.
“I just don’t know why Claire lets those assholes control the place. She is the boss there, she should stand up against them,” Linda scowls.
“She is just trying to avoid confrontation.”
“No, she is afraid they would stop paying the daycare the money, so she is an ass-kisser,” Saige scoffs, making you laugh.
“Well, at least I have Y/N now to take good care of Izzy,” Harry smiles, his eyes meeting yours and you swear your heart skips a beat when he says that he has you.
“Lucky bastard!” Ava throws her hands into the air, making everyone laugh.
Enjoying the company, you stay outside instead of locking yourself up in your room. It’s nice to see the moms occasionally pick on Harry, they surely like to joke about him being a hot single dad, but he usually just blushes and smiles at the compliments. Linda and Zac leave first, then Ava, Saige and Yara head home as well when it’s nearing five in the afternoon. Though Harry tells you to just leave the cleanup for him, you insist on helping.
“Now I feel bad you are working on your day off,” he huffs as you help him around in the kitchen.
“It’s not working,” you roll your eyes. “I live here too, of course I’m gonna help keeping it clean.”
“You know, if your brother ever wants to come over, feel free to invite him.”
“Might take your word, because he is very curious about the place,” you chuckle. Harry smiles as he starts washing the dishes.
“He is welcomed anytime.”
“Thank you.” Putting away the snacks that was left you start drying the dishes while he is washing them, working next to each other in silence. Unlike his usual attire, he is now wearing just a plain white t-shirt with light-washed jeans. “You’re quite the moms’ favorite,” you tease him, earning a soft chuckle from him.
“Saige and Ava like to pull my leg, but I know they mean well.”
“They are great people, I always liked them,” you smile glancing at him.
“I remember when I first met them at a parents’ meeting, they spotted how lost I was among all the moms and asked if I wanted to sit with them. Then Izzy became friends with Yara so we met quite a few times.”
“I find it a little funny we never met while I was working at the daycare. Izzy was in my group for almost a year and we just never ran into each other.”
Harry licks his lips before turning his gaze to you, finishing up the dishes and turning the water off.
“I saw you.” Your eyebrows shoot up. How did you not see him?
“Really?”
“Yeah, just a few times. Mostly it was Ruth who picked up Izzy these past few months. I had a huge project that ended just before you started here, so I didn’t have the chance to pick her up that much. But I saw you a few times. You were just always busy with the kids, I guess… you didn’t notice me,” he shrugs, holding his arms on his chest as he leans against the counter.
“It could get pretty intense sometimes even though it was just a daycare,” you chuckle, remembering to all the tantrums and fussy dramas that happened between the kids. Sometimes it felt more like a high school than a daycare, especially when friends were taken and lovestories happened through lunchtimes.
“Daddy! What are we having for dinner?” Izzy runs into the kitchen, tippy-tapping her hands on the counter that she can barely reach.
“Macaroni and cheese.”
“Yes! Maccy cheese!” Izzy cheers throwing her hands into the air. Harry smiles down at her, ruffling her hair and you can’t push down a smile at what she just called mac and cheese.
Harry starts prepping for dinner, he puts on some music that Izzy dances to and though you try to leave them be and enjoy their alone time, Izzy insists you stay and help as well.
“Izzy, let Y/N do what she wants, this is her day off,” Harry warns her, making her pout her lips at you. Not that you would have said no to her, but now you definitely can’t leave.
“It’s alright. I’m happy to help.”
Izzy sits on the counter in a safe distance from the stove, her duty is to watch the pasta cook while Harry takes care of the sauce and you set the table, knowing it won’t take long for the food to be ready.
“Daddy?” Izzy speaks up, tilting her head to the side.
“Yes, baby?”
“I love Maccy cheese. Does mom like it too?”
Harry’s eyes flicker over to you, as if he is embarrassed you caught a moment that shouldn’t have been revealed and you can tell he is still kind of torn how to handle the mentioning of his late wife. You keep a straight face, making yourself busy with cleaning off the counter top. You wouldn’t want to make him think he can’t talk about Maggie in your presence.
“Um, yeah. Mommy loves mac and cheese,” he nods, giving her knees a little squeeze before moving her off the counter to take care of the pasta.
Your eyes meet Harry’s gaze when you bring some water to the table and you can tell he is still thinking about the slip you just heard, but you give him a soft smile, trying your best to assure him nothing bad happened.
Izzy babbles through dinner about everything she did with Yara and Zac today, excited to see them as soon as possible and Harry promises her to arrange a meeting for them in the park sometime next week. You try to help with cleaning up, but Harry doesn’t let you, so pouring yourself a nice glass of wine you sit in the living room to watch some TV before going to bed. After dinner, Harry takes Izzy upstairs to give her a bath and once that’s done she is allowed to play some more in her room.
Harry joins you soon on the couch with a glass of wine as well, seemingly tired from all the socializing he did. Peeking at him while the evening news is playing on the screen, you notice that he is not even paying attention, deep in his thoughts he is pulling on his bottom lip like he always does whenever he is deep in focus. You have a guess what he is thinking about, but you want to give him the time and space to figure out if he is ready to share or not.
“I, uhh—I never really told you why it’s just Izzy and I,” he speaks up and you turn to him with patience, knowing the importance of him bringing it up. “My wife… Maggie, she… We got married about six years ago and then two years later we had Izzy. She was six months old when Maggie…”
He is struggling to find the words, or to just even think about it and you don’t want him to feel like he has to tell you about any of it.
“Harry, you don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”
“No, I want to. I always feel bad that I don’t talk about her, makes it look like I’m trying to forget about her, but that’s not at all the case, it’s just… hard to think about how long it’s been and I still feel like it was just… last week.”
Harry sniffles and you’re not sure if it’s because he is getting emotional to the point where he is going to start crying or it’s nothing significant, but you feel the urge to assure him about your support. Reaching over you put your hand to his arm, giving it a gentle squeeze. His eyes first fall to your hand and then to you, a sense of softness shining back from his green irises as he lets out a shaky breath.
“It was a car accident. She was driving home late night from her sister’s and a drunk driver ran the red light, crashed right into her car. They both were rushed into hospital, but Maggie’s lungs collapsed and she… they couldn’t help her. The guy had surgery and though he broke quite a few bones and had a serious concussion, he survived.”
You have to bite into your bottom lip, already feeling the tears welling in your eyes, but you quickly blink them away. You can only imagine what it’s like to be called and find out your wife was killed because of the dumb mistake of someone else. And to think that Izzy was still so small, Harry was left with a baby and the immense grief so suddenly, it must have been the toughest time he had to go through.
“I’m really sorry, Harry,” you quietly tell him, his eyes flickering up to meet yours and they are glistening from the tears. He just nods, blinking a few times before drinking up his wine.
Before anything else could be said, you hear Izzy running down the stairs, soon throwing herself to the couch, cuddling to Harry’s side.
“Hey baby, want to go to sleep already?” he asks, softly brushing through her hair with his fingers. Izzy nods, blinking sleepily. Harry scoops her into his arms standing up from the couch and he is reaching for his empty glass, but you take it before he could.
“I’ll wash it, don’t worry about it,” you smile at him.
“Thank you,” he breathes out, holding Izzy tight before the two of them disappear upstairs.
You don’t stay out too long yourself either, washing the glasses you let a single tear run down your cheek before quickly wiping it away and heading up to your room.

The past two years you’ve been taking gigs as a photographer more and more, going to weddings, birthday parties, baby showers or anniversaries to snap photos of others’ most precious moments. You are not a professional, nor do you treat yourself as one, but the more events you attended and the more work you put out, the more popular you started to get. Now you have about two bookings every month and you are able to ask for a quite impressive amount of money for a session that people are willing to pay for your pictures.
You’ve been putting off your gigs since you moved into the Styles mansion, wanting to focus on all the changes in your lives, but now that you’ve gotten quite used to your new life one month into it, you are getting back to your usual. This Saturday you’re doing a photoshoot of a soon-to-be-wedded pair who also booked you for their upcoming wedding in a few weeks. It’s kind of an engagement photoshoot since they couldn’t do one when they got engaged months ago, but they didn’t want to miss out on the chance to do one before they official tie the knot.
Harry and Izzy are planning to go to the zoo today, something she’s been begging to do for weeks now and Harry finally gave in, so all three of you are going to be quite busy today. The photoshoot takes place at this fancy, mid-century styled café the couple chose, so you decide to dress up yourself a little too. Putting on a maroon colored pencil skirt that hugs your hips and waist tight, you tuck into it a white silky blouse, making you appear like some kind of eyecandy assistant straight out of a Hollywood movie, especially with your low bun, which is less for the look but more for practicality, since you don’t like it when your hair gets caught in the straps of your camera.
Swinging your camera bag to one shoulder and your handbag to the other one, your camera hanging from your neck, you head downstairs, rushing a little because you’re short on time already. Izzy is sitting on one of the stools at the kitchen island while Harry is packing them some lunch and snacks for the day.
“Oh! Y/N, you look so pretty!” Izzy beams at you when you near the corner. She is dangling her legs playfully, her piggy tails curling adorably on each sides of her head. Harry’s head snaps up and his lips part upon spotting you.
“Thank you, Sunshine,” you smile at her, caressing her cheek, tickling her a little that makes her giggle.
“Where are you going?” she asks curiously.
“Izzy, don’t question her all the time, that’s not too nice,” Harry warns her, but you just shake your head.
“It’s alright. I have a photoshoot today. I have to take pictures of a couple that’s going to get married soon,” you explain to her and Harry’s ears perk up, eyeing the camera that’s hanging from your neck.
“I didn’t know you are a photographer,” Harry hums, closing the cooler.
“Well, I’m not a professional, but I’ve been doing photoshoots here and there.”
“That’s amazing!” he smiles warmly.
“Thanks. Well, I gotta go because I’m running a little late. Have fun at the zoo!” you smile, at them before walking out. You reach the front door but stop for a moment to read the text the bride has sent you letting you know they are running a little late as well. That’s when you hear the conversation between Harry and Izzy coming from the kitchen.
“She looked so pretty!” Izzy sighs. You expect Harry to just hum or ignore her words, but for your surprise, he answers her.
“Yeah, she really does.”
You blush like a teenage girl, feeling your heart fluttering in your chest as you smile, walking out of the house.

The father-daughter duo is still out when you get home later. You make yourself a tea and sit out to the terrace with your computer, starting to edit the photos right away so you can send then over to the couple as soon as possible. They turned out pretty good, you love the colorful vibe the café had and it went well with the pair’s outfits.
You get so into editing that you don’t even notice Harry and Izzy arriving home, just when the sliding door opens and Izzy runs up to you, holding a stuffed animal that appears to be an otter.
“Y/N, look what daddy got me!” she cheers holding up the toy.
“Oh my god, it’s really cute!” You pull her to sit on your lap as she hugs the toy, clearly happy to have a new addition to her already existing army. Harry walks out with a bottle of water and a glass. Joining the two of you at the table, he pours some water for Izzy and makes her drink it.
“We spent an entire hour watching the otters,” he chuckles, brushing Izzy’s hair out of her face as she chugs the water down.
“Can’t blame you, they are really cute,” you chuckle. Izzy puts the empty glass down and hops off your lap before announcing that she is gonna show her new toy around in the backyard before running away from you.
“Are those… the pictures from today?” Harry shyly asks, eyeing your laptop’s screen.
“Oh, yeah. Wanted to get a headstart on editing,” you nod turning it so he can have a better look. “Want to see what I got so far?”
“Of course!” he nods smiling.
You click through the photos you’ve already edited, there are about ten in total and you’re quite satisfied with how they turned out to be.
“Wow, they look… really good, Y/N.”
“Thank you,” you smile blushing a little.
“What events do you usually do?”
“Mostly weddings and engagement shoots, birthdays, these kinds of stuff.”
“It’s really amazing,” he nods smiling.
“I… Hope you won’t be mad but I’ve shot a few pictures of Izzy too these past weeks,” you admit, hoping he won’t get upset for you, doing it without his permission. “I didn’t use them anywhere, I wasn’t planning to, I just thought they were nice moments.”
“Oh, can I see them?”
“Of course!”
Opening up the folder you put her pictures into, you start clicking through the few photos you took of her. There’s one of her during her swimming lesson, laughing happily as she holds onto the edge of the pool, her wet locks sticking to her head. Then there’s one when the two of you were baking cupcakes and she got icing all over her face and tried to lick it off, her tongue sticking out on the picture. There are some of her just roaming around the backyard, exploring the bugs hiding in the grass, some of her napping with her favorite stuffed animals on the couch and then the last one was taken when she was jumping in her bed, you caught her up in the air, the widest smile on her face as she was laughing straight into the camera.
“Y/N, these are… wow. They are all so good, I love them!”
“Really?” Your smile grows wide, happy that he likes them.
“Yeah! Do you think… do you think you can send them to me?”
“Of course! I can get them printed for you, if you’d like. There’s a place where I go to get my photos printed, they make them look like they were taken on an analog, old school camera, I love that little extra touch on the pictures.”
“That would be fantastic,” he smiles, clearly in awe of your work.
You spend the rest of the afternoon editing while Harry and Izzy take over the kitchen as usual. When you’re on your way up to your room with your laptop after you decided to call it a day, you catch them in there, Izzy making Harry dance around with her while they are chopping the veggies. Harry is swaying his lips to the rhythm, humming to the song as Izzy is jumping and twirling around, singing from the top of her lungs. Despite the terrible loss of her mother, there’s no doubt Izzy is having the best possible childhood, getting all the love she deserves from her dad and you feel happy you are here to witness them grow together.

You did not see your parents’ divorce coming, probably because it’s been over six years since you’ve moved out and you only saw them every other week at best. You always tried to come around as often as possible, wanting to spend time with Trevor and of course, them as well, but you had to focus on building your own life. You had to worry about your work, your own living space and not much later you started dating Keith so you were pretty busy to say the least. You weren’t there when things started to go downhill, but Trevor was. He had to suffer through every fight and screaming match they had without any support and you’ve always felt guilty about it, but you couldn’t just move back home. However you’ve always tried to do everything you could to support him through these hard times. He knew he could call you anytime he had enough of the spiteful atmosphere at home and you were quick to come to his rescue.
You were mad at your parents, there’s no need to lie about it. But not because of getting a divorce, you knew better than to expect them to suffer in a marriage they weren’t happy in, but the way they handled has always been just… unacceptable. Especially because in the midst of their anger and hatred towards each other they started to forget that they still had a kid living home who had to listen to everything they threw at each other, things no son should ever hear about his parents, no matter if they were true or not.
Being a teenager in high school is stressful enough as it is, but having to deal with your parents’ nasty divorce is just something no teenager should have to go through. Trevor has been dealing with it for a while now and he is trying his best to just shut them out whenever they are going at it, but sometimes it’s not that easy. That’s when he seeks comfort at you.
It’s a Thursday evening when your parents decide to drive Trevor up the wall with their screaming and fighting again. You’re watching a movie with Izzy and Harry in the entertainment room, working on your laptop simultaneously, confirming some photoshoots for the upcoming weekends. Harry has let Izzy play with his hair while watching the movie, so now she is all over her daddy, decorating his hair with little hairclips and hair ties while the man is just sitting there without a complaint.
Your phone starts buzzing on the couch and Trevor’s photo is flashing on the screen. Putting the laptop aside, you grab your phone and walk out of the room not to disturb them with your call.
“Hey!” you greet him happily, but your stomach immediately drops when you hear him draw a shaky breath on the other end of the line. “Trev? What’s wrong?”
“Can I please spend the night at yours?” he pleads weakly.
“What happened, are you alright?” you perk up right away.
“It’s just… dad came over this afternoon and they went at it again and now they are doing it over the phone, mom is like really out of her mind right now. I have a math test tomorrow and I don’t think I can sleep here like this. She is still screaming at him over the phone.”
“I’m leaving right now, pack a bag, alright?”
“Thanks,” he breathes out and ends the call. Rushing back into the entertainment room Harry turns to you while Izzy is still busy with his hair.
“Uh, I know it’s really sudden and all, but my brother just called, would it be fine if he spent the night over here?” Even though Harry himself told you it’s fine to have people over, you still feel like you need to ask for his permission, especially if your guest is planning to stay the night.
“Is he alright? Of course he can come over.” Sitting straight up he asks Izzy to sit down a little which she gladly does, turning her attention towards the movie.
“It’s just, um, our parents are having another scream match. They are… They are in the middle of getting a divorce and they are not handling it right,” you let out a bitter chuckle.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that. Do you need me to come with you? You seem very upset, you sure you can drive?”
“No, it’s alright, but thanks. I’m fine. I’ll be back soon with him and thank you so much for letting him stay,” you breathe out. He just nods with a sympathetic smile before you turn around and leave.
Through the drive over to the house where you grew up your anger just grows with each turn you take. You love your parents to death, they raised you in a quite unusual and hard situation, they had to grow up with you when they had you so young, but they always made sure to give you everything you needed. And you know they have the same kind of love towards Trevor, but their hatred for each other is blinding them and they probably don’t even realize how much it affects him, but you are not letting them ruin everything because they fell out of love. Trevor deserves the same kind of supportive and loving environment to grow up in just like the one you had and there’s nothing that could change that.
Pulling up to the driveway you take a deep breath as you march up to the front porch and use your keys to let yourself in. The shouting hits your ears right away, it’s coming from the kitchen, but Trevor is the first one you spot on the top of the stairs. His hood is on and he has a backpack in his hands as he comes down the stairs with a pained and tired face.
“Hey! Left the car open, go get in there, I’ll be out in a minute,” you softly tell him as you give him a quick hug.
“Thanks,” he mumbles before walking out.
Following your mother’s voice to the kitchen you find her with a half empty bottle of wine, cussing your father out through the phone.
“Go and fuck that bitch you went out to have dinner with last weekend! Yes I know about that!” she spats and you wince at her words.
“Mom!” you call out, but she doesn’t even register your voice.
“Fuck you, Fred! Fuck you!” she continues, so you raise your voice a little more.
“Mom!” This time she finally hears it and turning around she looks at you with wide eyes.
“Y/N! What are you doing here? You didn’t say you were coming,” she adds, her voice soft and weak this time, the anger long gone from it.
“I’m here to pick Trevor up. Put dad on speaker, I want to have a word with you two,” you tell her firmly and she gulps hard, nodding as she sets the phone to the counter, putting your dad on speaker.
“Y/N? What’s going on?” you hear him question from the other end of the line.
“I could ask the same thing!” you snap back, fed up with the way they have been acting. They might have lost a good chunk of their youth because they were busy taking care of you after having at just nineteen, but that doesn’t give them the right to act like literal cavemen in front of your brother.
“Trevor called me all upset, begging me to come and get him. What is wrong with you two? You have been at each other’s throats all the damn time, it is not healthy not just for Trevor but to either of you!”
“Y/N, sweetie, there’s just a lot going on—“ your mother tries to explain, but you cut her off.
“I don’t fucking care! Whatever is going on between the two of you, Trevor should be first! No matter what! He needs you both, he needs the support and love, but he is only getting the screaming and fighting. This is not right!”
“It’s a hard situation, you have to be patient with us, Y/N,” your father sighs over the phone and you can’t hold your ironic laughter back.
“Patient? I’ve been patient with you these past about five months since you’ve been literally tearing each other to pieces. Do yourselves and everyone else a favor and just get it over with. Dad, pick up all your stuff and don’t come here for mom’s sake. Mom, don’t snoop around dad’s life, because it’s not your business anymore. Stop being ignorant and maybe start to think about the kid you still have living near you.”
Your words might have been harsh, but it needed to be said. You can tell by your mother’s shocked expression and from the way your dad is dead silent in the call that your message finally hit them in the head and you hope they are willing to get their shit together so Trevor doesn’t lose his mind.
“Trevor is staying with me tonight, we’ll see when he wants to come back, but you better think about what I just told you,” you warn them before walking out and leaving them to think about their actions finally.
Trevor stays silent on the road back to Harry’s and you don’t try to force him to talk, it’s clear he has had enough for today. Arriving back home you park your car next to Harry’s Range Rover and the two of you walk inside in silence.
It’s past Izzy’s bedtime so you’re not surprised to find only Harry in the kitchen when you walk into the house. Harry seems cautious, almost worried as he spots you and Trevor in the hallway.
“Trevor, this is my boss, Harry. Harry, this is my brother, Trevor,” you introduce them to each other quickly. They shake hands with a manly nod.
“Thanks for letting me stay here tonight,” Trevor clears his throat, feeling a little out of place.
“No worries. Feel free to use any of the guest bedrooms,” Harry smiles softly.
“Oh, we’ll be fine sleeping in my room,” you assure him but Harry shakes his head at your words.
“We have plenty of space. Please, use them!”
“Thank you,” Trevor mumbles and you shoot Harry a thankful look before walking your brother upstairs.
You opt for the room next to yours, Help Trevor get comfortable, making sure he has everything he needs for the night.
“Did you get into a fight with mom and dad?” he asks, when you are sitting on the edge of his bed, about to leave him alone.
“I just told them to get their shit together,” you chuckle, giving his leg a squeeze under the covers. He cracks a smile at you, but it’s not as genuine as it should be. “I’ll drive you to school in the morning. My room is right next to this one, come over if you need anything, alright?”
“Thanks,” he mumbles, pulling the covers up to his chin.
“Good night, Trev,”you tell him switching the lights off and walking towards the door.
“Good night, Y/N,” he calls after you before you close the door, letting out a long breath.
As you make your way down to the kitchen you see that Harry is still there, his eyes snap up to you, filled with concern and worry.
“Everything alright?” he asks as you make yourself a tea.
“Yeah, he was just fed up with the constant screaming. I can’t blame him, my mother didn’t even realize I was there until I raised my voice at her.”
“I’m sorry about that. Must be hard dealing with high school and a nasty divorce.”
“It is,” you sigh. “But thank you for letting him stay, really.” “I meant it when I said it’s just as much your home as it is ours. He can come over anytime, don’t worry about that,” he shrugs.
“Thank you. I’ll drive him to school in the morning, but I’ll be back by the time you leave, is that alright?”
“Of course,” he smiles warmly. “You two look a lot alike.”
“We get that a lot,” you chuckle. “It’s the eyes and nose shape, I think. We got those from our mother.”
“People say I look like my sister too, but I don’t really see it, if I’m being honest,” he chuckles lightly.
“Yeah? Why?”
“No idea,” he shakes his head laughing. “I just don’t see it, but I couldn’t tell you really.”
Sipping on your tea you stay in the kitchen with Harry, the light conversation about his sister and eventually his mother eases the stress that has been gripping on your chest from the encounter you had with your parents earlier. You’re not sure if he tried to talk you through it because he saw how much you needed the distraction or if it’s just how he is, but either way, he really helped you to relax.
Cleaning after yourself the two of you head to bed, saying good night to each other before disappearing in your rooms.

“This place is like… really huge,” Trevor sighs in awe when the two of you are eating breakfast together the next morning.
“I told you, it’s a mansion,” you chuckle, digging into your oatmeal. “I’ll show you around next time you’re here.”
“T’was nice of Harry to let me stay,” he hums.
“Mhm, he is a cool boss,” you smile at him.
“And kinda handsome…” Glancing at Trevor you see the sly smirk on his lips and you give him a stern look.
“Stop right there, alright? No funny thoughts!”
“Funny thoughts?” he laughs leaning back in his seat. “I just made a statement that he is a nice looking man, that’s it. Do you not agree?”
“I’m not commenting on the topic,” you diplomatically answer.
“On what topic?” Harry appears from the stairs, making you both turn his way. “Good morning,” he smiles warmly.
“Morning!” Trevor nods his way before he turns back to you, still smirking. You narrow your eyes at him before answering Harry.
“The topic doesn’t matter. Morning, Harry!”
He pours himself some coffee that you brew earlier before joining the two of you at the dining table. He strikes up a conversation with Trevor, asking him about school and his future plans once he graduates and luckily, Trevor is on his best behavior despite the comment he made earlier, he is not trying to put you into an uncomfortable situation. He knows better, because if he upsets you now, he will not be returning to the mansion, that’s for sure.
“Alright, get your stuff, we are leaving in five,” you tell him when both of you are done eating. Nodding he disappears upstairs as you take care of the dishes quickly.
“Is he staying tonight as well?” Harry asks, following you into the kitchen.
“Oh, no. I’m sure mom wants to talk to him after last night, so it’s better if he goes home.”
“Hope things will get easier for him,” he smiles and you return it, thankful that he let him stay here when he really needed a place for himself.
“Thanks for everything, Harry” Trevor smiles at him when he arrives with his backpack.
“Of course, come back soon, but under more peaceful conditions,” he chuckles nodding in his way.
“I’ll be back soon!” you call out before walking out of the house with your brother.
“So how long have you been crushing on your boss?” Trevor asks in the car and your eyes widen as you try to keep the car straight in the lane.
“Excuse you?”
“Come on, Y/N. It’s kinda obvious, you swoon at everything the man says, haven’t seen you this soft since your high school graduation,” he chuckles, finding your reaction quite entertaining, but you’re not enjoying the situation that much.
“I do not have a crush on Harry,” you shake your head laughing, but you can’t ignore the knot in your stomach at your own words. Was this that big of a lie?
“That’s too bad because I think he has a thing for you too,” he shrugs, carelessly staring out the window, like it’s that casual to discuss you and your boss having possible feelings for each other.
“When did you become an expert on these stuff?” you huff, glancing at him shortly before turning back to face the road.
“I’m not an expert, but I’m not blind either. And I saw the way he looked at you.”
“What way?” you scoff.
“Like he is thankful you are walking this Earth.”
“Did you take this from a rom-com on Netflix?” you tease him, but he just shrugs. “Of course he is thankful, I’m helping him with his daughter. It’s not easy being a single parent and I’m helping him immensely. But there’s nothing else behind that.”
“Sure, good luck convincing yourself,” he sighs when you park the car down at his school. “Thanks for the ride and the night too. I’ll call you later.”
Leaning over the console he gives you a quick hug before hopping out of the car and walking towards the main building.
Arriving back home you find Izzy sitting on the couch with a bowl of cereal on her lap, watching her favorite morning cartoon, but no sign of Harry and for a moment you get scared you got back too late, but then you realize he wouldn’t leave Izzy home alone.
“Hey Sunshine, did you sleep well?” you ask, caressing her rosy cheek as you join her on the couch.
“Mhm, what are we doing today?” she asks, showing a spoonful of cereal into her mouth.
“You have French class today with Lyon and in the afternoon I thought we could learn about otters. You seemed to like them a lot at the zoo.”
“Yes! They are so cute!” she cheers happily just when you hear footsteps coming from the stairs. Turning around you spot Harry walking towards the living room, but your lips part immediately when you see that he is putting on another shirt, his naked chest on display since he hasn’t buttoned it fully. What you saw not long ago from your balcony is now so much closer, the swallows peeking out from under the shirt and you see the little cross pendant hanging between his pecs, something you’ve only seen if he pulled it out of his shirts which didn’t happen that often.
Harry stops in his tracks when he sees you on the couch with Izzy and a blush paints his cheeks.
“Oh, I’m sorry. Didn’t know you were back,” he breathes out, his fingers working fast on the buttons to get himself presentable again though you wish he would just get rid of the whole thing… “Izzy spilled some juice on me so I had to change quickly,” he explains, finishing with the buttons and he quickly fixes it so he looks just as spotless as always.
“You poured too much into my cup!” Izzy defends herself furrowing her eyebrows at her dad.
“Of course it was my fault, who else’s would have it been?” Harry huffs as he presses a kiss to the top of her head. “Y/N, I have something to ask you.”
“Go ahead.”
“I know it’s pretty sudden and on a very short notice but could you maybe look after Izzy tonight? Niall called me and begged to meet up with him for a few drinks. I would call Ruth, but she is out of town this week.”
“Oh sure! No problem,” you smile at him.
“Are you sure you don’t have anything to do? Don’t feel pressured to say yes, I should have asked in advance, it’s just—“ “Harry, it’s fine. I’m okay looking after her tonight,” you assure him before he talks himself down from letting you do it. “Go have fun, you barely get out of the house without Izzy.” If you’re being honest the only place he goes to without his daughter is work and it’s a little saddening, he deserves some time out from his daddy duties.
“Thank you,” he smiles at you with gratitude. “I won’t be out too long, I promise.”
“No worries, have fun with Niall,” you wave in dismiss.
“Thanks. Have a great day. Be good, baby. I’ll see you in the afternoon.” Harry kisses Izzy’s forehead before grabbing his suit jacket, wallet, keys and phone and heads out to start his day.
“Alright, daddy is off to work and we also have a day ahead of us. Come on, let’s get started,” you smile at Izzy who nods in agreement.

Harry swears he didn’t come home earlier than his usual because he feels bad for asking you to cover the evening, but you know that’s a blatant lie. He is home by three and frees you for the rest of the afternoon, leaving you with about two extra hours. He informs you that he would be leaving around seven, so dinner time will still be his duty, but you’ll have to put Izzy to bed at her usual time, which works perfectly for you.
A little before seven Harry disappears to take a quick shower and get changed before heading out, while you sit out in the living room with Izzy, reading her from a book she chose after dinner.
When Harry returns, he is dressed more casually than he usually does for work, wearing a pair of beige slacks and a black shirt tucked into it, the first three buttons left undone, showing just a hint of his tattooed chest for the viewers.
“Okay, I just called a car, it’ll be here any minute. Please call me if anything happens, I could come home anytime.”
“Harry, I take care of her all day, I’m sure we’ll be fine for one evening as well,” you chuckle, trying to ease his nervousness about leaving his daughter home at a time he is not used to.
“Right,” he lets out a soft chuckle. “Thank you again. And Izzy, be good. Y/N will put you to bed tonight, but I’ll be here in the morning, okay?”
“Okay!” she sings, completely fine with the new arrangement.
“Alright, see you soon, good night!” he calls out on his way out of the house.

Sitting at the rooftop bar, Harry and Niall take up a small table for two near the railing so they have a nice view of the city below them. The waitress brings their order, tequila on the rocks for Harry and a good pint for Niall, and the latter man can’t ignore the fact how pretty she is in her tight white shirt and short black skirt, smiling coyly at the men as she asks if they want anything else.
“We’re good for now, Darling. Thank yeh,” Niall smirks and even winks at the woman, who is seemingly enjoying the attention from him, but deep down she would be happier if it was Harry who was trying to flirt with him. However he is busy on his phone, typing out an email even at this ungodly hour, which pisses his friend off.
“Would you stop being a workaholic prick and maybe glance at the woman that wants to fuck the shit out of you?” Niall snaps at him, grabbing his attention, but he just rolls his eyes.
“That would require my interest as well, which is not there.”
“That’s fucking sad. Really, mate. How long are you going to act like a crybaby? I’m getting tired of your long face. I get it, shit happened, but you eventually have to move on.”
Harry tries to ignore his words, eyes glued to the screen of his phone hoping his friend would just drop it, but that’s not what Niall is like. So instead of leaving him to be, he grabs his phone, snaps it right out of his hands and then shoves it into his pocket.
“Hey! What the fuck?!” he growls at his friend who just gives him a hard look.
“Harry, I’m worried about you. You do nothing, just work and be with Izzy.”
“So you’re saying I shouldn’t spend time with my daughter?” he asks twisting his words.
“You know that’s not what I mean. Spend as much time with her as possible, but don’t forget to take care of yourself.”
“I’m taking care of myself. I sleep and eat well and I workout regularly. I don’t see what else I might need.” “Fuck. You need to fuck,” he points out, making Harry roll his eyes again.
“You know, sometimes I question why we are even friends…” Harry grumbles under his breath as he takes a sip from his drink, feeling like he definitely needs the alcohol if Niall is gonna pick on him all night.
“Because I’m the one who pushes you out of your pit of sorrow, m’friend. And right now I feel like I need to step in, because you are turning into a bitter old man.”
“I’m not bitter,” Harry narrows his eyes at him.
“And neither are you old, so why are you acting like you are?”
“Look, I know that you are a fan of the bachelor life, going to parties, sleeping around with any woman you can get, but that’s just not for me, it never was, not even a long time ago.”
“I’m not trying to get you to act like a frat boy, Har. I know you are too soft for that, but I think it might be time for you to, I don’t know, open up a bit.”
“Open up?”
“Yeah! Go out, meet new people, preferably women,” he adds with a knowing look. “It’s been more than three years, Harry. You can’t stay at home and mope around forever.”
“I really don’t think we should be having this conversation right now.”
“If not now, then when? I tried to talk to you about it many times, but you always just dodged it, so I gave you more time to adjust to the situation, but I think we are over that,” Niall sighs, leaning onto the table. “We both know time flies by. Soon Izzy will go to school, she’ll have her own little life and before you could even blink twice, she is gonna be a teenager, barely talking to you, only caring about some boyband, her friends and shows. The time will come when you’ll have to step back a little and I don’t want you to stay alone.”
“First of all, Izzy is 4 and she won’t be allowed to even think about being independent until she is twenty,” Harry starts off as Niall rolls his eyes at him.
“Yeah, sure. You’ll have an amazing time when she becomes a teenager.”
“Don’t even talk about her being a teenager.”
“It’s going to happen!” Niall snaps and Harry narrows his eyes at him. “Okay, let’s just calm down.” He takes a deep breath even though he is the only one getting mad right now. Harry might feel uncomfortable, but he is not one to lose his temper that easily. Niall on the other hand is known to be a little too passionate at times.
“Alright. Please know that I’m just trying to be a good friend. What happened is tragic and I can’t even imagine what you went through, though I was here all along so I have a slight guess. I’m happy that you are doing vehemently better now, it’s amazing, but I know that you’ll be miserable if you stay single forever.”
“I’m not gonna start dating, Niall. It’s just… too soon. I can’t get into a relationship now.” Harry shakes his head, gulping from his drink again, the alcohol burns down his throat as he grimaces shortly.
“I get it that you don’t want a relationship, but dating might not be that bad. I’m pretty sure there are some hot single moms you know who would love to go out with you for dinner or some shit.”
“I’m not interested in any of them,” he shrugs.
“Then what about Y/N?” Harry’s eyes snap up at his friend, flexing his jaw out of instinct.
“What about her?”
“She is pretty, nice and funny, completely your type. Why don’t you try it with her?”
“She works for me,” Harry replies right away.
“No one fucking cares,” Niall scoffs. “And because you didn’t say that you don’t like her, I assume you are into her.”
Harry lets out a heavy sighs shaking his head. You’ve not been the only one who’s been noticing the other. Ever since he has caught you watching him while doing his morning yoga, he couldn’t shake the thought of you and he took a special notice about a lot of things about you. Like the way you scrunch your nose every time you smile when Izzy says a word wrong, or the way you like to put up your hair into a ponytail when you’re playing with her in the backyard and there’s always a tiny strand that hangs lose at the back of your neck because it’s too short to reach up to the ponytail, but his favorite thing is how your voice is a little hoarse in the morning when you come down for the first time from upstairs. The thought that he is always the first person you talk to in the morning just brings this pleasant feeling into the pit of his stomach, something he hasn’t felt in a long time.
He can’t deny that he finds you beautiful either, how could he not? You’re just a wonderful person inside and out and he is thankful his daughter is in such good hands when he is away at work. But he hasn’t dared to think further than this, his mind just doesn’t let him, however Niall’s words are now poking at the sleeping giant.
“Stop assuming things,” Harry mumbles, looking away from his friend, feeling like he is being grilled.
“Stop denying things,” Niall retorts, earning a huff from Harry. “Okay, don’t ask her out just yet, but try to get closer to her. Become friends, try to open up and get to know her a little more!”
“I don’t want to get closer to her!” he replies, but he can easily point out how big of a lie that is, even though he is trying his best to make himself believe that it’s not.
“So you don’t have a crush on her?” Niall raises his eyebrows at him.
“Where are we, in middle school? I’m 31, I don’t have crushes,” Harry scoffs.
“Okay so then you don’t mind it if I ask her out?”
“You are not asking her out, Niall,” he sternly replies, reaching for his drink once again, that’s nearing its end very closely. He needs to order another one if Niall decides to be an asshole all night.
“Why not? He seemed to like me when we met, I think we both would have a nice evening, might even take her home—“
“Shut up, Niall. You are not going out with her!”
“Really? What’s stopping me?” he smirks, knowing well what he is doing and where this is heading. Harry opens his mouth, but then no words come out, because he realizes what he wanted to say should not be said out loud.
Because I like her, a tiny voice tells him in his mind. Niall’s smirk grows even bigger, because even though Harry didn’t answer, his face tells it all, confirming what he has been trying to force out of him all evening.
“Yeah, just as I thought,” he laughs, taking a few gulps from his beer. “I’m not telling you to fuck her brains out immediately, but it might be nice if you just got to know her a bit more. And if things seem to take, like… a turn, if you know what I mean, don’t chicken out, just go with it.”
“You know, Niall, you should worry about your own love life the way you worry about mine.”
“There’s nothing to worry about!” He beams, clearly without a worry. “I’m too good of a catch to be tied down, so I’m enjoying life to the fullest right now.”
“Aren’t you tired of waking up next to a different woman every morning?” Harry sighs, feeling exhausted just to think about the way his friend lives.
“Don’t judge for something you never tried. I like it, it fulfills all my needs, why should I change?”
“Because you worry about me ending up alone when it’s most likely gonna be you.” Harry gives him a look, but it doesn’t seem to affect him. He shrugs it off easily.
“Difference is that I like being alone, but you don’t. You are wired to have a partner in the long run while I’m perfectly fine with my adventures. So do me a favor, and be less of a little hermit. You’ll thank me later.”
Tumblr media
Niall’s words stick to Harry’s head more than he would have liked it. The two friends stay at the bar until about midnight and while Harry leaves to go straight home, Niall heads to another direction with the pretty waitress on his arm, who served their drinks relentlessly all night.
Arriving back home Harry tips the driver generously before heading inside, seeing that you’re still up, the lights in the living room and the TV illuminating the area. Walking further inside he spots you cozied up on the couch, a thick blanket thrown over yourself as you watch some kind of detective documentary, chewing on your bottom lip in focus. He can’t help the smile that tugs on his lips at the sight of you, taking just a split second to savor the moment and wrap it up in his mind.
“Hey, why are you still up?” he questions walking inside. Your eyes tear away from the screen, blinking up at him as you smile slightly, pushing yourself up into a sitting position. Rounding the couch Harry joins you, sitting down as he runs a hand through his hair.
“Got caught up a little,” you chuckle, nodding your head towards the TV. “Did you have a good time?”
“As much as it’s possible to have a good time with Niall around,” he chuckles, making you smile.
“He is not that bad, is he?”
“He can be a little asshole sometimes,” he admits. “But it was fine, we had a nice… talk.”
“I’m glad,” you smile sheepishly, before turning back to the TV.
Harry’s eyes snap to the screen as well, but he is not following the case at all, his mind is busy thinking about everything Niall has told him.
It really has been three long and torturous years without his beloved wife and just as Niall said, the beginning of this time was almost lethal. He never thought there would be a day when he would wake up and not feel like curling up into a ball and just cry all day. Those times are now gone, because with a lot of help from his friends, family and even a therapist, he was able to find his purpose in life again: his daughter.
Harry knows that his friend is right, he can’t live his life on his own, that’s just not how he is built, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Especially with the haunting thoughts he has been harboring, kept away from everyone in his life, because he has always been too afraid to say them out loud. That would make them become even realer than they already feel to him.
Sitting on the couch next to Harry you glance at him for a second and can almost see the gears turning in his head.
“Everything alright?” you softly ask. His green eyes flicker over to you, as if he is debating whether he should talk or not.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” you nod.
“But it’s kind of personal.”
“Okay, then ask and I’ll decide if I want to answer or not,” you chuckle softly, pushing yourself up a little so you can focus on him better.
“After things ended with your… ex, when you found out that he was cheating on you… How long did it take you to get back out to the field, if you know what I mean.”
His question surprises you, it really is a personal matter and you’re not sure why he felt the need to ask you about it especially now, but you have a guess why it’s relatable for him. You lost someone you loved and though the situation is a very different nature, somehow it’s still similar in a way.
“Well, I told you earlier that it was the kind of situation where I blamed myself for what he did,” you start off and Harry nods, patiently and curiously listening to what you are saying. “I was convinced that he cheated because I wasn’t enough, because I didn’t give him everything he wanted and that it was all my fault. It took me weeks to see clearly and realize that even if I wasn’t giving him everything, it wouldn’t have given him the right to cheat on me. Sometimes it’s really hard to lift the blame off yourself, especially when you were the one putting it there.”
Harry’s lips part at your words and because he is not speaking, you’re not sure if it’s the good or bad kind. You really wish you could just read his honest thoughts, but it seems like he is keeping them to himself so you continue.
“I think it took me a good, like… four months to actually move on. I went on a date for the first time about six months after Keith and I broke up. I’m not saying I’m over the fact that I was cheated on, but it’s not stopping me anymore to live my life. I had to accept that just because of what happened, I still deserve happiness and to be loved.”
Love is a beautiful thing, but it’s very powerful and you learned it the hard way. To love and be loved is essential, love makes life so much better and more special, but it can also scar you terribly and leave you dried out and in pain. You have to learn to accept the love you get and remember it whenever you are not getting enough. It’s a rollercoaster, but the highs make the whole ride worth it.
Harry stays silent as you turn your attention back at the TV, seeing that he is busy chewing on your words. Whatever his reason was to ask you, he is clearly processing the answer he got, making his own conclusions and you wouldn’t want to bother him while he does that.
The documentary soon ends and you realize how late it really is. Saturday is your day off, but you don’t want to sleep through the whole thing, you have a few errands to run. So switching the TV off you fold the blanket and drop it into the basket next to the couch. Harry snaps out of his thoughts when you stand up from the couch, realizing that you’ve shut the TV off already.
“I’m going to bed, you should too,” you smile at him softly as he nods, standing up as well.
You’re already on the stairs when Harry calls out after you. Turning around you keep one foot on the next step, glancing over at him, still standing by the couch.
“I’m… I’m really sorry he couldn’t appreciate you.”
You smile at him warmly, because it says so much about him as a person. Apologizing for something he had absolutely no control over, something someone else did, someone he doesn’t even know. Yet he still felt the need to say sorry.
“It’s alright. I’ll find the person who’ll give me the love I deserve,” you tell him before turning back around and walking away.

Jungkook has been laying on your lap for what seems, hours. You haven’t spoken to him in a year, maybe a little more. A ‘hi’ here and there when Mrs. Jeon invites you, and Yoongi to events. You can never say no to her. Slowly, you start noticing Sooyoung showed up less, and less. Jungkook always gave the excuses, ‘She’s not feeling well’, ‘Sooyoung has a work project she has to get done’, ‘Her friend is having a baby, and she’s the birthing partner’, ‘She’s housesitting for her brother’. They never seemed to stop. Mr. and Mrs. Jeon were understanding, but visibly disappointed. As far as everyone knew, everything was perfect. Until it wasn’t. Your mother told you it was about children. Jungkook wanted children, but Sooyoung was not sure if she ever wanted to be a mother. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with not wanting children, and not wanting the commitment of it. But they wanted different things.
What Jungkook never told his parents was how messy it was. The harsh words, the long nights, large amounts of tears shed on both ends, and the feelings of failure. Jungkook wanted to make it work. He wants to believe Sooyoung wanted to make it work. Within the week Sooyoung had moved into her co-worker’s place, at the end of the month the papers were signed, by four months the divorce was final, and Sooyoung had accepted a transfer to a sister location across the country. It was fine for a while, at least Jungkook tried to convince himself it was fine. The days felt long, dreary.
He tried to get back into painting, boxing, and other hobbies he had pre-Sooyoung. He started hanging out with friends more, Namjoon was more than happy to catch up over some beers from his favorite brewery. He even started talking to Yoongi more. They were work partners, regardless of that, their chatter never went past the needed communication to complete the necessary work. Jungkook started slowly, asking Yoongi if he wanted a coffee while he got his own. Inviting him to lunch with Namjoon. Even making jokes here, and there. It’s not what it was before, but they’re getting there.
He moved out of the apartment that him, and Sooyoung shared. It was difficult, but he’ll make this new space home. It’s definitely smaller than his previous apartment. Cozier, he wants to say. Jungkook fills it up with art that had been put in storage, his salvaged knick knacks, pictures with his friends and family. His parents gift him new kitchenware. His older brother helps paint. Namjoon gives him some new plants to care for, and Yoongi comes over to assemble some furniture because ‘you need the help kid’. A few weeks post-divorce, he feels good, normal. He’s out with his mom at the mall when he finally sees her.
He wants to say she’s more beautiful than he remembers, but all he can focus on is the bump she has. His mom catches his line of sight, “Oh, look at my Yn-ie. She looks beautiful, doesn’t she?” He nods in response. “She’s eight months now, Mrs. Min says it’s a girl. They’re so excited, Hyeri says Yoonie has been talking non-stop about the baby,” his mother chatters. She talks his ear off about the Min baby. The name, the nursery, heck even the baby shower the moms threw as a surprise. He’s happy for her, for them. He ignores the ache in his chest the rest of the outing.
His mother, bless her heart, goes up to Y/n. Asks how she’s doing, how baby min is doing. “Surprisingly energetic,” she jokes, “Yoongi says she gets it from him, but this is the same man that knocks out if he gets comfortable enough on anything.”
While his mom is chatting Y/n up, he takes her in. She cut her hair to a lob, waves a little more defined. Her smile lines are a little more prevalent. Eyes sparkling, a bit tired looking, the baby must be giving her a hard time if it’s kicking up a storm in there. She rubs her belly in comforting motions, as she talks with his mom. He can’t help admiring her features.
“What do you think, kookie?”
Jungkook stared at his mother, and Y/n, “I’m sorry what?”
His mother sighed, “He’s been like this for a bit, sweetie. Nothing sweetheart.”
They keep chatting about the baby. He tells his mom he has to finish his errands. She waves him away with a ‘be careful’ and ‘love you’. Y/n waves goodbye with a shy look. They walk slowly to the nearest bench, his mother’s hands waving around as she speaks.
He doesn’t know how he gets to Y/n’s house. One drink turned into three then six and a half. All doubles, of course. The bartender could tell he was drowning his sorrows, and promptly cut him off as he was ordering his seventh drink, but instead of a double a triple. His angel of a bartender helped him order an Uber to the nearest place he could remember. Once he arrived at the apartment complex, he made the very unsteady way to Yoongi’s and Y/n’s apartment. He knocked on the door heavily. It felt like a long time until Y/n answered.
She looked so pretty. In her cute little pj’s, belly accentuated by the soft material. Her cheeks a little rosy from the effort of walking at this point in her pregnancy.
Surprise filled her face, “Jungkook, what are you doing here?”
He pouts, swaying a bit as he tries to find his footing, “I.. I miss you. It’s been hard these last few months without you.”
“Are you drunk,” Y/n asks worried.
Jungkook hiccups in response, “In my defense, the nice bartender lady cut me off.” Y/n sighs, she could call Mrs. Jeon to come get Jungkook. But she doesn’t want her to see him this inebriated. The feelings of the divorce probably caught up with him and were too overwhelming. Y/n doesn’t know what to do, but decides to take care of Jungkook like she used to.
Y/n takes his hand, and gently guides him to the large side of the L-shape couch. She avoids putting any of Jungkook’s weight on herself while gently, as gently as she can place a drunk man, sitting him. She coaxes Jungkook to slowly drink a full glass of water to sober up, with little difficulty thank goodness. After a moment or two of adjustment on the couch that wouldn’t make her uncomfortable, Y/n settles next to Jungkook. It would be better to be closer to him, as to avoid the unavoidable struggle that movement seems to have these days.
Jungkook must be finding it difficult to sit upright, as he ends up laying down. Feet dangling on the edge, head on the available part of your lap, his face looking away from your belly. He starts to hum quietly, nothing specific really, it’s calming.
“Can you pet my hair, please,” Jungkook mumbles. Y/n nods, “Sure. Your hair has gotten long, I like it. It suits you.”
Jungkook slurs, “Thanks, Sooyoung hated it long. Said it made me look messy.” She hummed in distaste, “She also hated anything that wasn’t to her liking. I’ve missed you too Kook. It’s been weird not having you around.”
He snuggles deeper into her lap finding comfort in her warmth, “I know. You don't know how much I’ve been wanting to call you, and just tell you all the things that happened.”
Y/n nudges Jungkook up, she settles more comfortably into her spot and nudges Jungkook back down. He decides he’s no longer satisfied with looking at the wall in front of him, and with the most grace he can muster he turns to face Y/n’s belly. If he was sober enough he could’ve seen the pink rising in her ears. He grabs her hand and places it back on his head to keep receiving his favorite head scratches. Maybe it’s the whiskey, but he feels like he’s having a staring contest with Y/n’s belly. He’s strangely okay with that, until he feels the (surprisingly) hard kick of baby min on his cheek.
Jungkook lets out a groan, and follows it up with an antagonistic soft poke at the spot the kick came from. “Your kid isn’t even here yet and it’s already bullying me,” he sighs. “You’re supposed to be nice to your elders,” he tells her. Y/n giggles, “She’s a kicker. Sometimes she’ll wake me up in the middle of the night. I don’t know where she got this energy from. My mother in law says her boys weren’t too rowdy, and mom says I wasn't a kicker, but more of a crier. So that’s something to look forward to.”
Jungkook laughs, he wants to say she still is. He looks up at her, “Is it okay if I touch your belly?” Y/n is a little shocked. The few times he’s seen her, he’s never mentioned anything about her pregnancy. She wants to question him, but decides against it. She gives him a soft nod, and guides his hand to her belly. “Be gentle,” Y/n tells him.
Jungkook moves his hand in small, soft circles. Making quiet noises of contentment. A few minutes of silence pass by with no words exchanged. It feels comfortable, even a little nostalgic to how things were pre-marriages. “Kids,” Jungkook says.
“What?” Y/n asks.
“We divorced over kids,” he says more firmly, “Sooyoung wasn’t sure if she wanted kids. You already know I wanted them. We couldn’t come to an agreement of when we would start trying. She wanted to wait because she was up for a promotion at work, and she didn’t want to pass it up by staying home with the kids. I told her I was okay being at home with them, the good thing about my job is that I can work from home, if needed. I could be the stay at home dad, be part time until we were comfortable enough to put them in daycare and go back to full time. She said she’d think about it.”
He sniffles, and buries his face into Y/n’s belly. She starts to caress his hair to comfort him, “It’s okay, take your time.”
Jungkook sniffled a bit more, rubbing little circles on her belly with his thumb, “She said we would talk more about it. A little before you got married we talked about it again, but she kept saying she can’t do her job and be pregnant. I told her she wouldn’t do it herself, I would help her. We were a unit. She refused to talk about it after that. Any time I wanted to have a talk about it, it turned into something bigger and ugly. A few months ago I mentioned that mom had told me you were pregnant.” He paused for a moment, wondering if it was appropriate to go on. Y/n kept playing with his hair, encouraging him to speak when he’s comfortable.
“I made a comment..,” Jungkook mumbles, “I made a comment about how I couldn’t wait for our kids to be running around together. Sooyoung got angry. She said that would never happen. I asked her why, you were still my friend, so is Yoongi. Why wouldn’t I want our kids to be friends too?”
Y/n hummed, not sure how to react to Sooyoung’s statement. “Is that what started the argument?”
He nodded, “Yeah. I got upset, I told her that she can’t keep avoiding my friends, I missed you guys and wanted to be how we were. I wanted you to, at least, be amicable. I didn’t expect her to be best friends with you guys.” Jungkook got quiet once again. He could feel baby Min moving. He wanted to feel what he’s missing these past several months.
“So, clearly she didn’t like us,” Y/n jokes.
Jungkook chuckled dryly, “Clearly. She said how do I expect her to be friends with the person she’ll always be second best to. As well as the people that blamed her for us not being together.”
“I told her Joon and Yoongi don’t blame her for anything,” he said, “She wasn’t second best to anyone, and you’ve been my friend for years. Sooyoung didn’t believe it. I asked her if we all somehow got along, why wouldn’t our kids be friends. She said there wasn’t going to be any kids for yours to be friends with. I asked her what she meant.” Jungkook choked up at the memory, “Sooyoung said after some thinking, she wasn’t sure if she ever wanted kids. She doesn’t know if she can commit herself to that role. She says she has her career ahead of her and I can’t make her be a mom.”
Jungkook started to tear up, “I told her I’m not expecting her to be a stay at home mom. I repeated that I would be a stay at home parent… She… She said she’s not sure if she wants to have kids at all. Sooyoung said it’s too much responsibility.”
He started to sob, his body shaking from the increased intensity. “I couldn’t believe it. When we were dating she said she wanted kids. I’m not upset that she doesn’t want any, it’s her choice. I’m upset that she lied to me about it.”
Y/n’s heart aches for her friend, she knows how much Jungkook wanted kids. Namjoon might be the one buying baby shoes because he finds them cute, but Jungkook has always talked about being a dad. Always talked about how he wanted to be the type of parent his were, that encouraged him to thrive in his likes and talents. He was passionate about it.
“We talked all night. We couldn’t come to any type of resolution. So we decided to separate. This was something that was non-negotiable.”
“Is that what led to the divorce,” Y/n asked.
Jungkook nodded, “She stayed at a coworker’s place that she’s friends with. We didn’t talk for a couple weeks. Sooyoung reached out first. She said this is something she won’t change her mind on. She’s sorry for not being truthful about her stance on kids. We decided to divorce. We settled pretty quickly. It’s signed and official as of last month.”
“I’m sorry kook,” Y/n whispered.
You were sorry, he knew you were. He keeps rubbing your belly, feeling baby Min follow around. Wanting to feel the comfort of having you around.
Jungkook ends up falling in and out of sleep. He doesn’t know how long he lays there for.
“No, I’m fine.”
“He’s asleep right now.”
Who were you talking to?
“No, Yoonie, it's fine. He’s sleeping and he didn’t do anything. I think the divorce finally got to him.”
He heard you pause, but didn’t hear anyone else in the apartment. You must be speaking with Yoongi on the phone.
“No, we just talked about it. He was pretty upset, obviously.”
You continued to play with his hair, brushing out the knots with your fingers. He hummed lowly, snuggling closer to your belly. Baby Min must’ve had the same idea because she was still squirming around. Yoongi assured you he would be home soon with Namjoon to get Jungkook home.
“Y/n?”
“Yes, Kook,” You answered.
He sits up, eyes puffy, and cheeks stained with tears. “Do you ever think about us?”
“Like? Our friendship? Of course, all the time,” you answer.
He scoots closer facing you, and reaches out to hold your hand. “No, I’m talking about us. What we could’ve been.”
“I did, but not anymore,” you answered honestly, “You chose Sooyoung, kook. I wasn’t going to wait forever. I deserved, and still deserve to be happy. And I am happy. You shouldn’t think about the what if’s.”
Jungkook sniffled. “I do,” he whispered, “All the time. I think about what if, I had worked up the courage to confess to you on one of our last movie nights? Things would’ve been different. We would’ve been happy. We would’ve gotten married, and had the wedding you always talked about.” He paused, he’s trying so hard not to cry about it. “We would’ve had those cats you wanted, and we would’ve finally adopted the dog that hangs around the convenience store. We would’ve had a baby. We would’ve been a family. I should’ve said something, shown you how much I loved you. How much I still love you.”
You pulled your hand away from him, “But you didn’t, you chose Sooyoung kook. I loved you, I still love you, but not how you want me to. Maybe things would’ve been different, but it’s too late.”
Jungkook starts to sob, he knows it’s too late. It felt bittersweet to hear that she still loves him.
-
Namjoon takes Jungkook home. He feels everything, yet nothing. Maybe he can start fresh with no what if’s to cling on to.
Joon helps him get cleaned up, and lays him down in his cold bed. He lets himself dream of what could’ve been.
“How are my girls doing?” Jungkook asked, while caressing your growing tummy. “SHE,” you pointed, “is giving mommy a hard time. S’been kicking all morning. She’s definitely YOUR daughter.” Jungkook lets out a sympathetic giggle. Your baby has been a pain in your butt, more like your bladder, since she could move. Mrs. Jeon says her youngest was the exact same, and to expect an energetic baby once she’s out. She’ll be all smiles, and sweet giggles, as well as a pain to put to sleep. Maybe she’ll take after her father and sleep like a log your mother in law jokes. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of doctors appointments, birthing classes, nesting, nesting, and more nesting. The nursery has changed colors three times, Jungkook was insistent on doing art on the walls to give it a personal touch. Took a whole weekend, but now your baby girl will be slumbering under the stars.
Both of you have gone through the recommended parenting books, gotten advice from the grandmothers and aunties, Jungkook might’ve panicked a little at the repeated visual of you giving birth. But, it’s all part of the process. He’s been enjoying giving little facts he’s been learning from the shared pregnancy tracker.
“Babe, did you know our baby is the size of a cherry today?”
“Hey, by now they grew all their toes.”
“Did you know our baby can pee? In the womb?”
“Jungkook, what the fuck dude?”
Other than the obvious pregnancy issues, things have been smooth sailing. His favorite thing to do these days has been laying his head on your lap caressing your belly. If it was up to him he’d stay there for hours drawing patterns with his fingers, singing to his baby, feeling her movements.

Fulfilling A Promise
This story is set a few years in the future of my main AU, so hopefully, you guys enjoy After breaking free of his curse, Dark Choco Cookie found love in Blackberry Cookie, a single mother in desperate need for a stable male figure in her and her young daughter, Onion Cookie’s life, seeing as the girl’s father abandoned her after she announced the pregnancy, and her brother, Adventurer Cookie, was a bit of a deadbeat who’d rather run off and have adventures then stay home and help take care of his niece. Years later on his daughter’s 10th birthday, Onion had invited her friends over for the party, and while they had fun, when her friends went home, she felt lonely. Being an only child she felt like she was missing out on something special. Dark Choco felt pity for her, and he remembered something he told her not long after he married her mother.
He was picking her up from daycare, when he saw her look visibly saddened, not to the point of crying, but enough to raise concern in the prince, when he asked what was wrong, Onion told him she wanted to have a sibling, like her friends all did. Dark Choco went to find his wife. She was busy cleaning up after the party, removing decorations from the walls. She didn’t mind doing this type of work herself but did appreciate help when given.
“Hey dear, we need to talk.” Dark Choco said to her, simple and just.
Blackberry looked back to her husband and stepped off the stool she was standing on before speaking. “Yes, what is it?”
“I think it’s time we give Onion a sibling, I can tell she feels alone when it’s just her.” Choco says, looking at the young lady helping clean in the background.
Blackberry places a hand on Dark Choco’s shoulder, letting out a sigh and giving a smile. “Took you long enough to ask, my love~” She said coyly, winking at her mate.
A month later the pair waited for their daughter to arrive home from school, sitting in the living room as they did, and Onion was surprised to see her mother and father in as she walked in as usually, they were doing their own things in the house.
“Oh, Mom, Dad, what’re you doing in here?” Onion asked, closing the door behind her.
Dark Choco smiled lightly. “We have some exciting news for you, hun.”
Blackberry held Dark Choco’s hand as she spoke. “Onion, you’re gonna be a big sister!” She said beaming with excitement.
Onion was in the process of taking off her backpack when those words were uttered, she froze and it thumped against the ground.
“I’M GONNA BE A WHAT?!-“
Months later, Blackberry sat on the couch and let out a sigh, rubbing the exposed skin of her now massive belly, she wasn’t too afraid of things going awry as during her first pregnancy she had studied up on midwifery, so she knows what to do whenever she goes into labor, which should be any day now.
“Tired, mom?” Onion asked sitting by her side
“Wooo… Yeah, your sibling is pretty heavy, they take that after your adoptive father.” Blackberry said, caressing her behemoth baby bump.
“I wish you stopped calling him my adoptive father, Papa is as much of a dad to me as he will to this little one.” Onion spoke out, laying a hand on her mother’s belly.
With that, the developing child let out a strong kick, visibly bulging out the tight skin of Blackberry’s abdomen and causing her to groan.
“Oof! Easy there, little one, it’s just your sister…” She scolded her unborn child as it kicked again, not nearly as hard this time however.
Onion was shocked by the baby’s strength as well. “Holy cow, this really is Papa’s baby.” She said rubbing the spot her sibling kicked.
Blackberry felt something radiate through her belly, a tightening sensation, one she hadn’t felt since her last pregnancy, she slowly stood up and took a deep breath before looking to Onion.
“Sweetie, call your dad and uncle, it’s time.” She said beginning her breathing exercises.
“Time, you mean…?” Onion asked
“Yes dear, I’m in labor-Ah!” Her thought was interrupted by her next contraction, knees buckling as her water broke.
“Oh by the ancients, why today, why couldn’t the baby just wait…?” Onion asked in a panic as she scrambled to find the phone.
Blackberry took deep breaths and powered through another contraction before answering. “Trust me, I was asking myself the same thing when I went into labor with you… Haaaa….! I need your help to deliver the baby until they get here.”
“You need my help with what now!?” Onion said in genuine surprise, she never thought she’d be learning this kind of thing at her age. Soon after reuniting during Blackerry's relatively short labor, the family heard it, the ear-piercing screech of a new baby echoed across the walls of the room, the sound woke Adventurer Cookie, who fainted while trying to help, back up.
“H-huh, What happened?” He muttered out, rubbing his head.
“Momma, it's a boy, I have a baby brother now!” Onion shouted in joy as she handed over the newborn to Blackberry.
“A baby prince… Just like me…” Dark Choco said, stroking his wife’s head.
“Oh… He’s just so perfect…~” Blackberry said as tears began streaming down her face. She hadn't felt like this since having Onion.
The child was named Mixed Berry Cookie, and through thick and thin, his family helped take care of him, mainly Onion Cookie, who loved him the most out of almost everyone

How Bizarre Pt2
<<<< Part 1                                    Part 3 >>>>
Chapter warnings: cursing, sugar daddy/baby relationships, sexual themes
Tumblr media
A couple hours after you left, Bakugou had finally woken up. He rolled his tired body over and his drowsy eyes peered at the bed-side clock,“tch. Already noon.”
His red eyes looked sleepily around the luxurious hotel room, noting your absence. A teeny-tiny, itsy-bitsy, micro-minature part of him wished that you were still there.
He pictured how your skin delectably contrasted the white bed sheets below him and how your pretty eyes gazed up into his own full of lust and desire. If only you had stayed a little longer...maybe he could’ve gotten another round in...
He groaned as he threw himself out of the bed and strolled towards the shower. The stress of the previous weeks were nothing some good drinks and hot sex couldn’t fix and as the water streamed down his toned body, he was already feeling more and more refreshed.
You, on the other hand, were as busy as a bee.
After rushing home to clean yourself up and diving into a crowded train, you arrived at the Hara Estate with 2 minutes to spare.
You had only begun setting down your belongings in the small room near the massive kitchen when the lady of the house yoo-hooed out for you.
“Y/N!! Y/N!!”
You appeared in front of her.
“Oh great! Glad you’re here. I have so much for you to do today, everything has to be perfecttttt,” she sang while slapping a to-do list on the counter, “Hurry up and change dear then get to work. Ok?”
“ok.”
Her smile faded and she stared at you sternly.
“Yes Mrs.Hara,” you corrected.
Her matte pink smile returned as she gave the to-do list two light taps on the marble counter, “Well chop-chop.”
Your blood boiled.
She turned on her pointed heels and she pranced away leaving you burning holes in the back of her dark, silky hair.
Ma'am, you're grey roots are showing 🙄
Your job definitely didn’t start off like this. Hell, you weren’t even obligated to lift a finger but...shit happens...
......
You had met the witch's husband, Mr.Hara, at the daycare you used to work at. He wouldn't always be the one to drop his son, Prince, off but he made sure to pick him up in the evenings.
You worked at the tiny front desk, so you were always able to catch a glimpse of the visibly wealthy man when he came in.
Mr.Hara was a tall, slim Japanese. Fit and paired with shiny, black hair, always trimmed to perfection and silver streak in the front just for show.
He worked somewhere behind the scenes in the Hero Commission...or Association...or something like that…. Let’s just say the man had impressive connections and money to spare!
He was clearly older than you, probably by a decade, but that didn't stop your eyes from roaming and your mind from wandering.
Saying that he hadn’t been eyeing you as well, would be a blatant lie on his part.
One afternoon when he was signing the book after collecting Prince, he suddenly spoke up, "How much longer do you plan on working here?"
"S'cuse me?" You said, taken aback by the sudden and almost intrusive question.
He slipped his sleek, black and gold pen back into his suit pocket before closing the check-out book and handing it back to you, "Well I know that working here can't pay you that well and I'm sure you don't plan on doing this the rest of your life," he explained.
"My career plans are none of your concern Mr.Hara."
He chuckled at this and you cracked a small smile but you both knew that he was right.
You would think that working at a daycare for the rich and privileged would pay you just as elegantly, but boy were you wrong! It was minimum wage with a few toasted breadcrumbs and as much as you tried to deny it, you would soon need to find a new job.
"I'll tell you what," Mr. Hara began, " You come work for me at my place and I'll pay you ten times as much as you get here."
Your ears perked up.
"Work for you?"
"Yeah. Trust me. It's not bad at all,” he stated while leaning over the counter and lowering his silky smooth voice, “Just come to my place a few days a week, cook, clean...entertain me."
Instant butterflies!
Your eyes went wide, “Entertain you?! I’m sorry Mr. Hara but I cannot sleep with you!!”
...at least take me out for dinner first😏
He quickly straightened back up and waved his hands dismissively, “No No not like that. It just gets a little lonely in the house. That’s all...”
You stared at him suspiciously.
“I’ll tell you what,” he declared, “Here’s my personal number, we can discuss it more over the phone. You don’t even have to do the housework but just give me a call ok?”
“Oh..ok..thank you Mr. Hara,” you mumbled softly as you accepted the little note..
After fixing his dark sunglasses back in place and calling for Prince, who had been completely enchanted by whatever game he was playing on his tablet, he made his way to the exit, leading Prince through first.
Then he suddenly stopped midway and turned back to you with a smirk...
“Oh and please, call me Kenji.”
Before you could even reply, he had disappeared through the heavy glass doors and into his BMW.
D-Did you just cop yourself a sugar baby position???
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Two days later, you gave him a call.
He answered all of your questions effortlessly as if he had done this a thousand times and flattered you with the absurd amount he was willing to pay you for just keeping him company.
“...and what about sex?” you whispered timidly into the phone, ensuring that even the ghosts in your empty apartment couldn’t hear you.
“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to,” he laughed. “So Y/N? What do you say?”
Exactly one week after that, you’re striding through the mansion gates.
Seeing that your new “job” had extremely flexible working hours, you decided against quitting at the daycare. The extra income was now seemingly unnecessary but the more the merrier right?
It also grants you an easy answer to the inevitable question of “So what do you do for a living?” rather than having to explain your relationship with Mr.Hara or trying to avoid the question totally.
You straightened out your burgundy blouse and picked at the little fluffs on your jeans, before entering the house.
He had told you to just let yourself in when you got there and that’s exactly what you did.
When you finally strolled into the house, your jaw immediately dropped.
Girls! Girls! Girls!
Girls of all different shapes, sizes and colours were littered around the living room, relaxing in the pool and snacking in the kitchen.
“Lonely my ass,” you thought.
Your presence had quickly caught the attention of a particular blonde who sprinted towards you at lightning speed. Her piercing green eyes and strikingly long legs had even you mesmerized.
You were definitely in the presence of a Victoria Secret model.
“OHHH you must be Y/N, Daddy told us to look out for you!!”
Daddy?
“He’s in his office. Come! Come!”
After giving the door a few light taps, you heard the low timbre of Mr.Hara’s voice beckoning you to come in.
“Ah y/n. I see you’ve met Lada.” he chirps.
The girl in question whose accent you have picked up to be Russian smiles down at you brightly.
As Mr.Hara dismisses Lada, he calls out to another girl who suddenly appears from under the desk.
You nearly had heart failure.
She strides out with Lada, patting down her purple lingerie.
You physically had to bend over to pick up your jaw from the floor.
Mr.Hara smoothly turns to you in his chair, totally unfazed.
“Glad you made it Y/N, welcome to your new job.”

This chapter gives a lot of background but sit tight, the drama is comingggg 🤪

Just desserts, Boss lady. Eat it, anytime.
Back in the 2010’s I was living in Louisiana and going to school. I got a job at a daycare with the understanding I was training to be the assistant manager, then later the manager. They had a really high rate of turnover for a daycare, they just couldn’t keep employees and didn’t know why. I have a lot of experience and training in childcare and have done a lot of managerial work within the field, like maintaining supplies, creating lesson plans and activities, checking time sheets, processing payments, etc. The owner was looking to hand over a lot of the day-to-day business, so that’s where I was supposed to come in.
The daycare that hired me was situated between the campus and my apartment, so it was also a convenient location. I could go to and from school to work, and vice versa. It seemed like it was going to be a decent place to work. I had the one year olds and I loved them to bits. It was easy to slip in the routine with the other teachers and the kids I had took to me very quickly. About a week in I ask about the training and my boss tells me I need to hit sixty days first. Okay, no biggie. They want to make sure I’ll stick around and not just use them for training/certs. So, I make it through the probationary period and there’s still no mention of training. The room with the older kids always smelled like pee, but when I brought it up they just dismissed it as a kid who had problems wetting himself. All the time, apparently. The two year old teacher was always on her phone playing games, the kids would run wild the entire time while she sat with her head down, not watching them. I brought that up, as well, and was told it wasn’t my business. The infant teacher was the only one that actually seemed to care and be invested in the kids, at all.
As much as that bothered me it was also stuff I knew I could fix because I had done it before at other places. If we could ever get to the actual fucking training, that is. I get only vague answers when I ask my boss about it, and it’s really starting to irk the furk out of me. I was  also getting REALLY GD tired of listening to my boss talk about the kids or their parents, calling one mom a slut because of how she dressed, or saying how weird this little boy in my room was. My room also shared a half wall with the kitchen, so when my boss was back there prepping breakfast or lunch I could hear everything she said. She was a newly single 55 yr old divorcee who’d just started to go out to clubs and drink again and pick up men. There’s nothing wrong with that, I mean get it, girl! More power to ya, but please stop talking about shaving your bombass cooch around my kids. She did this ALL THE TIME, on the phone, to other teachers, even parents, like they wanted to hear about the grown and sexy club she found last night or how she’s walking crooked from pulling a muscle in her crotch.
I stuck it out thinking, “Okay, I can do this, she’ll be gone most of the time anyway when I take over and I can implement some changes so she’s not running people off with her attitude.” So, one day I have a little boy (the same one she often tried to say was weird) who starts running a fever and has to go home. I call his parents and they tell me his grandparents are heading over to pick him up. He’s a very quiet little boy, never makes any waves or anything. His parents are absolutely precious. His grandparents come in and are just as sweet. So, they come in my classroom while my boss is preparing lunch. She’s talking to another teacher while I talk to the grandparents about his symptoms. All of a sudden we hear her talking about the little boy, how he stunk and ‘what else do you expect from *racial slur?’. The boy was middle eastern. I am stuck somewhere between absolutely mortified and thoroughly goddamn enraged, but I also have a bunch of little kids volleying for my attention and don’t want to scare them. I clear my throat as loudly as humanly fucking possible, but She. Keeps. Going, talking about the parents and how she was glad she didn’t have to deal with them right now, because somebody else was picking him up. I’m apologizing profusely to the grandparents at this point. I peak my head around the corner and tell her to shut up, then watch the couple leave with their grandson.
She comes out of the kitchen and says nothing at all, just walks straight by without a word. I get the kids to sleep, then go on my lunch break. Just as I return, I hear her on the phone in the office as soon as I walk in. She is telling the boy’s parents that I was the one in the kitchen talking about him, blaming every disgusting thing she said on me. Of all the nerve, the outright unmitigated gall, WHO tf does that?! I was heated.
I waited until the end of the day, walked in her office, and quit on the spot. I then reported a lot of the infractions and stuff I had seen that she never corrected, even though she was fully aware of the issues. Didn’t think about her again, until six months later....
I’m pulling through the Jack In the Box drive-thru and I hear a familiar voice on the speaker. Nah, I think, can’t be. I pull around and there my former boss is standing in the window wearing a drive-thru headset. This was funny for two reasons: 1) when I left she wished me luck flipping burgers (in return I wished her luck keeping the place afloat) and 2) she treated service people like absolute shit. Not enough ice in her drink? She’d call and complain. They forgot extra ketchup? Well, then she deserved free fucking food. Just an absolute Karen any time she had the chance.
I stop at the window and stare for a second. She looks straight through me at first. I gave her the money and said,  “Fancy meeting you here.”
She never acknowledges me, so I actually wondered if she recognized me. I asked, “You don’t remember me?” She put her hand on her hip and looked over the top of her glasses at me the way I had seen her do countless times when describing her sexploits from the previous night, and said, “No. SHOULD I?”
Damn, I figured, she really doesn’t know me? Buuuuuuut nope, she definitely remembered, because she then threw my change, coins included, at me in my truck, and asked, “Will that be all?”
Yep, honey, I’m going to feast on this moment for years.

Nights that were once peaceful and curtained in a familial bliss became a struggle. Calum and his kids usual nighttime routines were flipped upside down the day his partner and their mother walked out of the door. Only a month had passed and the toll it was taking was weighing heavy on the broken family. What once was bedtime stories and being tucked in extra tight with giggles and good night’s became late nights with heartache and questions with no answers. Calum’s son Declan was only three and fighting to try and find a semblance of understanding to something inexplicable. He didn’t want to go to bed; he was scared that Calum may not be there when he woke up. No matter how many times Calum promised he wouldn’t leave Declan’s trust and hope was already shattered by someone who’d made and broken those same promises. And with his one year old daughter Addie in his arms the fight felt futile. Declan was strong willed and heartbroken. Calum hurt for him, for Addie and for all of the relationships tattered in the fray.
Calum was exhausted. Dark circles painted themselves under his dulled eyes and languid motions accompanied him through long days. Declan was back at preschool after a couple of weeks staying home. But Addie was with Calum day in and day out. Daycare was an option but with a heart that hurt and a yearning need to keep his kids close Calum chose to keep Addie with him. At least for a little while longer. The band was in stride, working on a new album though the prospect of touring with Calum’s new situation was looking fragile. He’d bring Addie to the studio and writing sessions; his band mates always welcomed her with open arms and suggestions that they could look after her for a while—if Calum needed a moment for himself. He’d yet to do so, always powered through the exhaustion and hurt. Always kept her and Declan as close as possible. Tried to stay strong for all of them.
That strength was beginning to crumble; his resilience was breaking and sheer exhaustion was winning. One night felt heavier than most. Late hours were filled with more tears and questions than ever before. It was nearly one in the morning when Calum finally picked up his phone. He was hesitant; not wanting to wake Ashton or his family at such an hour, but with Declan in hysterics and Addie unable to sleep, he felt he couldn’t handle it alone. Not tonight. He swallowed his pride and dialed, it rang only once and he didn’t have to say anything more than a cracked hello before Ashton told him he’d be over in a minute. Living so close by lent truth to Ashton’s words but even a minute felt like a lifetime. It took all of the strength left in Calum to pick himself up off of the couch with Addie in his arms and Declan trailing him to get the door. An instant sense of relief washed through him when Ashton pushed his way through and began taking control of a situation Calum nearly felt helpless and hopeless in.
“Declan,” Ashton began, his stern fatherly voice taking hold. Usually it was reserved for when one of his flock ran a little too wild. But this time there was a presence of softness and understanding. “You need to go to bed.”
Declan, with tears still in his eyes and a staunch stubbornness innate within him, simply said no. It wasn’t funny; the nights of no’s and tears were heavy and becoming a problem. But the dry laugh that spilled out of Calum may have indicated otherwise. If it weren’t for the tilt of Ashton’s head at the simple word of defiance or the way his jaw went slack, laughter wouldn’t have been his first response. Calum could only watch the rest of the exchange as he gently bounced a stirring Addie, hoping it might lull her.
“No?” Ashton asked as he bent down, one knee hitting the tile floor and hands settling on his other leg. Declan stayed contrite in his answer with crossed arms. “Why?”
Declan merely shook his head and planted himself firmly at Calum’s side. A few minutes of bargaining and begging ensued, a small bribe and an eventual agreement got Declan’s hold off of Calum and scooped into Ashton’s arms instead. Calum felt a pang as Ashton walked off with Declan, a tightness in his chest that ached and wondered if he was doing the right thing; if he was doing right by his kids and handling everything well. Through the pain and doubt a small noise cut through, Addie’s giggle settling his worries as he looked at her in all of her innocence and love. She stared back at Calum, now more awake than ever, brown eyes big and small curls wild as another little laugh escaped her.
“What’s so funny, little lady?”
Calum wasn’t expecting her to answer and was startled when Ashton’s voice rang out instead. “He knocked out as soon as I turned the lights off.”
“Good,” Calum notes; unsure how Ashton even managed to get him so far as into bed. Most nights Calum couldn’t get him down the hallway and usually ended up with Declan restless in his bed for the night. “He’s overtired. Needs to get some sleep.”
“And so do you,” Ashton quipped with a raised eyebrow and gesture to hand Addie off to him.
Calum quickly shook his head and held her just a bit closer. “It’s okay, I can get her to sleep.”
“She’s wide awake and you’re half asleep on your feet.”
Calum considered that for a moment. Felt the weight of Addie in his tired arms, the weakness in his knees and the gentle sway of his body begging him to rest. He ran his fingers gently through her curls and gave her one last kiss before reluctantly letting Ashton take over. He wasn’t sure how he managed to bring himself to bed, always noting the absence of another on the left, or how he fell asleep when his life was spiraling out of control. But when morning came and the house was silent Calum realized he hadn’t slept so well in weeks. Panic cut through him when blurry numbers on the clock came into view. A blinking ten am stared back at him and prompted him to jump up and rush to the living room. He caught his breath and a subtle wind of confusion when he saw Luke on the couch, coddling Addie.
“Where’s Declan?” Calum asked abruptly and tacked on, “and Ashton?”
Luke turned to face Calum and then shot his eyes towards the front door. “Ash brought him to preschool. Said he was gonna get you some groceries after. Called me for backup with Addie. She had breakfast and helped me do the dishes.”
Calum relaxed. All the tension he had been holding inside began to ease at the help from his friends. The kitchen was cleaned from its once perilous state of dishes stacked in the sink and food cluttering the countertops. Calum sighed, shook his head and felt his heart drop. He hadn’t meant for their world to be spun so far into chaos. He had been trying to keep his head above water and his kids afloat for weeks. Last night they sank.
“I’m sorry,” Calum whispered as he joined Luke and Addie on the couch. “I’m sorry you guys got pulled into all of this. I should be doing better on my own.”
Luke scoffed, eyebrows knitting together and an incredulous look capturing his eyes. He shifted, moving to better face Calum and keep Addie comfortable in his hold. “You don’t have to go through this alone. You don’t have to be sorry for needing help. We love you and the kids, we’re gonna be here for you whether you like it or not.”
A dry laugh escaped Calum and an appreciative head nod followed.
“Besides, I don’t think I’m ever letting go of Addie,” Luke continued and gave her a small squeeze. “She’s mine now.”
Calum shook his head and reached his arms out. “Luke, give me my baby.”
Luke grinned then scrunched up his nose as he looked at the sleeping baby in his arms. “No, maybe later.”
Calum could only laugh at the exchange and found himself feeling much lighter by the time Ashton was walking through the door with bags of groceries in his grasp. When all was put away and Addie was put down for a proper nap—Luke being very reluctant to let go—Calum took a moment to express his appreciation.
“Thank you guys, for everything. I don’t—I don’t think I can do this alone.”
“You won’t have to,” Ashton reaffirmed Luke’s earlier sentiment. “We’ve got you. Why don’t you go get some extra rest. Mike’s gonna pick Declan up from school and bring him to dance practice—we’ll have a big family dinner tonight. You don’t have to do a thing.”
Calum nodded as he realized how much he missed the company of his friends and their families. That they truly were all one big family. His kids would always have him and the extra love of their extended family. He came back to the surface in a gentle float as he reminded himself he’d never have to go through anything alone—all he had to do was ask for help.

In her eyes he is Magic (Request)
Note: Pure fluff :D
Words: 1900
Prompts: Hi! Sorry to bother, but if ur still taking requests: can I get a loki x reader fic where the reader is babysitting a friends 3 yr old who absolutely loved loki right off the bat. If ur not taking requests, then I just hope you have a lovely day!--alpharra
Requested by: @alpharra
“Her name is Alisha, she’s three. I babysit her for my friend who doesn’t like daycares.” (Y/N) explained to Loki. He nods as they walk up towards the home.
“Do you think it’s safe for her to be around me?” Loki questioned softly to (Y/N). She grins and waves her hand.
“She’ll love you. Besides, I’ve talked to her about you. She’s excited to meet my mysterious boyfriend.” She chuckles, making Loki’s face flush slightly. “Trust me, it’ll be okay.” She assured before opening the door.
“Alright, but if she starts crying, I’m going home.” He comments with a grim expression.
“Hey!” She called, ignoring Loki who huffs quietly to himself. “I’m finally here!” She grins.
“(Y/N)!” A voice called, a young woman stepped out from the kitchen. “It’s so good to see you--Oh! You brought Loki finally.” She grins to him as he offers a nervous smile in return.
“Hey Nancy, where’s Alisha?” She asked, glancing around the living room.
“She’s upstairs in her room, taking a nap. She should be waking up soon.” Nancy explains, clapping her hands together. “Okay, I should be home around eight. You know everything so I don’t need to tell you what to do for my little star.” She grins.
“But of course, she’s in capable hands. I’ll see you later. Have a good day, Nance.” (Y/N) waved as Nancy went out of the front door. “Okay, so I’m going to go see if the little munchkin is awake. Come on,” She drags him along and up the steps.
“I’m serious about what I said. One scream from her and I’m going home.” He points a finger at her, causing (Y/N) to roll her eyes fondly.
“Alright, alright.” She assures before opening the door to Alisha’s room. “Alisha?” She asked, peeking inside just in time to see the three-year old’s eyes flutter open.
“(Y/N)!” She practically squeals before thumping off the bed and rushing over to (Y/N) who laughs and scoops her up into her arms.
“How is my favorite little Lady today?” (Y/N) grins softly at the excited look at the three-year-old’s face.
“Good!” She giggles before looking behind (Y/N) when she noticed a shadow. “Who’s that?” She asked, tilting her head.
“Oh! Alisha, this is my boyfriend Loki.” She turns to face Loki who offers her a timid smile.
Children usually avoided him if they could do this was more than a little terrifying. The last time he met a kid was Jane and Thor’s who wouldn’t stop crying until Loki left the room.
Just when he thought she’d freak out, she practically jumped out of (Y/N)’s arms and into his. He gasps as he caught her before right her in his arms. He finally took notice of the sparkle in her eyes as he swallows before looking to (Y/N) who was outright grinning.
“You’re pretty.” Alisha’s voice made him snap back down to her chubby little face.
“I’m sorry?” He questioned, making her giggle.
“You’re pretty!” She exclaims before throwing her arms around him as she hugged him.
“I’m--That’s a first. Um, you are very beautiful yourself.” He complimented when she giggles shyly and hides her face into his chest.
“Sounds like I have competition.” (Y/N) smirks as Loki’s face flushes at her. She covered her mouth, laughing when Loki sputtered slightly before she turned him around and let him go down the steps first. “You hungry?” She asked Alisha who nods.
“Mr. Loki! Come look at my toys!” She squeals, jumping down once they were downstairs. She snags his hand and rushes off towards the playroom as (Y/N) smiles warmly at the sight.
Loki looked back to (Y/N) who waves before going towards the kitchen to make some dinner for Alisha and Loki both. She silently thanked herself that Alisha liked Loki. She was terrified that the young girl was gonna take one look at him and not like him.
After about ten minutes of making some spaghetti, she walked back towards the playroom to see what Loki and Alisha were up to. She glanced inside before covering her mouth at the sight of this tall man squatting uncomfortably in one of Alisha’s purple playhouse chairs.
He had on a crown while she handed him imaginary tea in a tiny cup and plate. She was jabbering on about things that not even (Y/N) could make out, but Loki answered nonetheless like it was nothing. He was smiling, looking happier than (Y/N) has seen him in ages.
“(Y/N)!” Alisha exclaims, bringing her back to reality as she looked up to them both. “Tea?” She asked, offering out a small teapot that would be spilling actual tea if there was any in there.
“Sure, I have dinner ready.” She walked over, thanking Alisha for the tea.
“Alisha has informed me that she would like to be a knight after dinner. She wants you to be the damsel in distress, while I play the villain.” Loki exclaims as (Y/N) grins.
“Oh, is that so? Well, it looks like I have a beautiful hero to save me! Aren’t I lucky?” She tickles under Alisha’s chin, causing her to giggle loudly.
Suddenly Alisha’s belly growled as Loki blinked for a moment.
“Is there a beast inside your belly?” He asked, picking her up as she giggles loudly, making (Y/N) cover her mouth to muffle her laughter.
After dinner, (Y/N), Loki, and Alisha ran around the house playing all sorts of fantasy for Alisha. One time when Loki was the princess he turned himself into a woman and shocked Alisha. Just when he thought he made a mistake, she suddenly wanted to braid his hair and everything was okay.
“Yeah, Alisha is doing great. She loves him.” (Y/N) explains to Nancy over the phone before walking towards the living room. “I know, I’m so glad too. I was a little nervous.” She laughs softly. “But then again, I shouldn’t have been. Alisha is such a happy girl. She loves everyone.” She comments.
“Yeah, gets that from me.” Nancy chuckles. “Although, I am glad. I knew she wouldn’t but I’m sure he felt she wouldn’t. I’m so glad she has you and now him. I hated all those other nannies from before. I’m just thankful that I found you when I did.” She explains.
“Me too. Well, I better go check on them. They’re both quiet. I’ll see you in when you get here.” She smiles before hanging up the phone and peeking into the living room.
Her eyes widened gently at the sight before a warm smile bloomed across her features. There draped across the couch was a sleeping Loki and draped across his chest was a sleeping Alisha. He had a small afghani spread across her, it barely went to his knees.
She held up her phone and snapped a few photos to keep for later. She loved how much Alisha and Loki got along, and Alisha loved him from the moment she saw him.
(Y/N) snags the remote before shutting off Franklin from the TV as she started to clean up everything. It was nice and quiet which made her feel at peace, knowing that Loki was there to protect Alisha. She made it to the playroom before putting away the tea set, the plastic arm, and the foam swords.
Once she was finished, (Y/N) returned to the living room before shaking Loki slightly as his eyes fluttered open. She grins at his tired look before she leaned forward and kissed his forehead gently.
“Sorry to wake you, but Nancy is on her way home. I thought I could take Alisha back up to her room so she could stay asleep.” She explains when Loki’s arms wrapped around her.
“Don’t worry. I have her.” He assured before standing up slowly, careful not to jolt the sleeping child away.
“You’d make a great dad.” (Y/N) blurted out as Loki’s eyes widened before he looked at her. “I mean--I’m just saying. I just noticed that you are good with her and--I just… I am digging myself a hole here. Tell me to shut up.” She practically whined out.
“Do--Do you believe that? Truly?” He asked quietly, looking vulnerable as she nods immediately.
“Of course I do. I always believe in you.” She assured.
“Right, I’ll be back.” He whispered before going up the steps to lay down Alisha as (Y/N) bit her lip.
She did something stupid, didn’t she? She made a bad choice and now he’s gonna come down here and flip out.
Suddenly hands were cupping her face and lips were brushing against her own. Her eyes widened before she realized it was Loki who was kissing her. She immediately kissed him back before pulling away to look at him.
“What--What is this for?” She asked, placing her hand onto his mouth to stop him from kissing her again.
“I want children. I’ve always wanted children. No one ever thought I’d be good, or believed I could do it, but you do… Alisha is so bright and she reminded me that I do want children. I’ve always shied away from it, because… children generally don’t like me. I can’t do anything to change that, but she didn’t care. When I transformed into a Jotun to be the villain… She loved my eyes and the color of my skin… She accepted me, just like you do. And I hope to every God that shall listen that our children are as amazing as you.” He whispered as (Y/N) blinked back the tears that had blurred her vision.
“Loki, I’m sorry I never told you before. I thought you just didn’t want to be a dad. I should have talked to you. It was so cute seeing you with Alisha. She loves people, but she still shies away from people, but not you. She loved you the moment she laid eyes on you.” She giggles, choking slightly at the tightness in her throat.
Suddenly Loki pulled her into a hug.
“(Y/N), I want to try for children.” He whispered as (Y/N) choked out a small laugh.
“Okay, we’ll try for kids.” She promised before kissing him once more.
About twenty minutes later, Nancy finally returned home. She saw Loki and (Y/N) all ready to leave.
“Thank you both, I’ll give you double since he was here.” She explains as Loki shook his head.
“Not necessary. I enjoyed the time I spent with your daughter.” He smiles.
“From what I’ve been told, it sounds like she enjoyed it too. I’m glad. She’s iffier around gentlemen due to not having a father figure in her life, but that doesn’t stop her from trying her best.” Nancy explains. “Alright, you two have a wonderful night.” She waved as (Y/N) led them to the car.
“Oh, we will.” He whispered into (Y/N)’s ear as she snorts and pushes him away.
“You’re right, I’m taking a nice hot bath when I get home.” She flashes him a grin as Loki stuck his tongue at her.
The two shared another laugh before getting into the car and driving home.
(Y/N) glanced at Loki who was smiling as he watched out the window. It was a wonderful night indeed.

Catch me if I should fall
Summary:  “I, Hugh Everhart, swear to my best friend Georgia Rawles that if something happens to her, I will take care of her loved ones as if the same blood ran through our veins, as long as the sun and the sky shall endure.” He ignored his broken voice and put his hand over her fist, “But I also swear that I will never let her die. If she should fall, I will catch her.”

I want to start by saying this fic is dedicated to my mother @dawniebb. She basically introduced me to the wonderful headcanon about how Georgia and Hugh were best friends and she actually asked him and Simon to take care of Adrian if something happened to her. Thank you for saving me from my cursed theories.
This fic was in the back of my head during two weeks, I think, when you were worried about the support Hope Called Themselves the Renegades would have, and I wanted to cheer you up with this. But I didn’t had the inspiration to actually do it until now. Kinda late, considering HCTTR blew up, AND IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YOU FUCKING SHOULD.
I still wanted to give this to you tho. My sister Nodrian told me it was a good idea. Dime que esto no tiene la misma energía que un niño dándole a su mamá un dibujo que hizo en el kinder xd
Also #Nodriannoleasesto. Spoilers. Sorry.
Also x2 I took inspiration from Tightrope, a song from The Greatest Showman soundtrack. I’m obsessed with it, I’m sorry, I can’t help it.
Also x3 this is very self indulgent
Age of Anarchy
Year 20, Month 5
Hand in my hand and you promised to never let go,
we’re walking the tightrope.
High in the sky,
we can see the whole world down below.
We’re walking the tightrope.
Never sure, will you catch me if I should fall?
Well, it’s all an adventure
that comes with a breathtaking view.
He had heard of Bunny before. Evander and Tamaya had an encounter with her not so long ago when they were investigating some robberies that occurred in an area near the headquarters. She always stole jewelry or food. Bunny was not dangerous.
But she could jump.
Simon probably would have turned invisible to distract her and catch her off guard, Evander would blind her with one of his lights, Kasumi would stop her with a wave of water, Tamaya would throw lightning at her… but Hugh could only chase her and pray that she would get tired before he did.
They reached the bridge that connected the west and east side of Gatlon City. The sea was just below them.
Georgia passed over his head. Just in time.
Bunny was in the air when Georgia grabbed her by the wrist. The girl began to squirm and screech like a rabbit caught in a hunter’s trap.
“Not so fast, Bunny,” Georgia exclaimed. “Now—” she held out her hand, “—be a good little girl and give me that.”
Hugh caught up with them. He leaned against the bridge railing, under the dim light of a post, to catch up on air. Secretly, of course.
Bunny was not a little girl, she was already past fifteen. Yes, she was less than five feet tall and had the most crooked and huge teeth he had ever seen but that didn’t mean anything. Georgia needed to stop treating criminals like they were misbehaved children from daycare.
Although he had to admit it was fun watching her do it. It always made them mad.
“Never!” screamed Bunny.
“I know that it is not yours. It is not correct to steal things from older ladies who open their homes to you,” Georgia said as if it weren’t some general knowledge that stealing was wrong.
“That lady hates me! She hates me!” and bit her hand.
Georgia winced but didn’t let go.
“Hey, no biting!” Hugh ordered.
Bunny turned to see him, more furious than ever. “Nobody gives me orders, Captain.”
Then, Bunny kicked him in the chest and pushed him out to sea, letting out a more maniacal laugh than he’d ever heard come from a human.
He realized what had just happened until Georgia’s hands grasped his. At that precise moment, the violent waves that were under him crashed against the foundation of the bridge and Hugh felt a chill run down his spine.
Metal does not float.
Georgia brought him back to land and floated beside him. There was no sign of Bunny anymore, but he knew where she had headed.
“We need to go after her,” he muttered.
Georgia crossed her arms. “Not today, Captain. Let her go.”
But they couldn’t let her go. They both knew they could help her if Bunny let them, why wait for the next time they see her?
What if there was no next time?
He was about to tell her all that, when Georgia out of nowhere kicked him between the ribs slightly harder than usual. “Next time stay away from bodies of water,” she said reproachfully.
Hugh laughed and held the spot where he had hit him. “Yes, mother.”
Georgia was unfazed.
“I’m serious. What would have happened if I hadn’t held your hand? You do not know how to swim!” She took him by the chin to force him to turn to see her. “You could have died!”
He jerked out of her grip. Georgia sighed. She massaged her temple as she slowly sat down on the dirty pavement, frowning, and with her jaw clenched.
She knew he didn’t like it when people touch his face like that.
“But … I didn’t die,” Hugh said. “What’s this all about?”
She turned to see him with teary eyes like she didn’t recognize him. “Are you not afraid of your own death?”
Hugh scoffed. “Are you?”
Georgia looked away. It can’t be.
You are afraid?
“I have to confess to you, Hugh. Death has terrified me too much lately.”
Impossible.
He sat by her side. Georgia leaned on his shoulder without thinking twice, invading him with familiarity.
“It’s just… well, I guess you’ve noticed that Adrian gets super nervous every time I go out,” Georgia explained. “And I have told him many times not to worry, that I will return safely. I even tell him that phrase— ”
Oh, he knew that phrase by heart. “Not even the darkest of nightmares, the loneliest of nights, or the worst of troubles—” he said.
“Can with the boldness, bravery, and joy of Lady Indomitable!” Georgia finished with a raised fist. “You should get yourself a catchphrase like this. It would be good for your brand.”
“I’ll think about it.”
Georgia went silent again. “The thing is, no matter how many times I tell Adrian I’m going to be okay,” she murmured sadly, “he’s still scared.”
“And you get scared too?”
“It’s not that,” she assured. “I know that I am the best and you all would be dead by now without me, but honestly, the five of you are already adults.” She gave a soft laugh from underneath. ”You’ll be just fine without me.”
He took her hand discreetly. They were smaller than his. And warmer. I wouldn’t.
“But Adrian… he’s so young,” Georgia continued. “He couldnt live without me and the worst thing is that I couldn’t live without him. I get nervous at the slightest sign that he’s in danger. Like yesterday, when Kasumi bought him that lollipop, remember?”
Of course, he remembered.
“You stayed all afternoon watching Adrian eat the lollipop in front of the TV,” he replied, trying not to laugh. “Tamaya told you to stop harassing him.”
“Even Simon asked me if I didn’t think I was exaggerating. Simon! The one who told Evander when we went to the beach that if he didn’t put on sunscreen, he was going to get skin cancer and he was going to die right then and there!”
“In his defense,” Hugh said, “you can get skin cancer if you don’t put on sunscreen.”
“He wanted him to put on sunscreen at midnight. Do you know what the definition of ‘night’ is? It is the time of day when there is no sunlight.“
“But you agreed with him and forced Evander to put on sunscreen anyways,” he commented.
“In my defense, motherhood changes you.”
Silence returned.
The positive side of having been on the same team for the last ten years and spending entire nights silent to not give away their location is that there were no longer any awkward silences between them.
Georgia started playing with Hugh’s engagement ring. “Are you excited for your wedding? Because I am.”
“Are you trying to change the subject?”
“Maybe.” She took it off and put it on herself. “Are you excited?”
“Of course. Tomorrow is the big day.” Georgia gave it back to him like nothing. “I hope you already wrote your speech.”
“Obviously. I don’t think I should walk you down the aisle though. I will look much better than you.”
“That’s debatable.”
They had barely managed to get suits for him and Simon. Casually, the father of Kasumi’s new friend was a minister and had agreed to marry them off. He had even lent them the backyard of her house, where he had beautiful rose bushes and a well-kept lawn.
They were all very excited. Evander was about to physically fight with Adrian because they both wanted to be the ones who hold the rings. In the end, Adrian won, not only because Georgia wanted Adrian to deliver the rings so badly, but also because Evander was no longer a lovable nine-year-old and wouldn’t have the same impact. He was even starting to grow facial hair. Tamaya told him that he was going to have to shave for the ceremony and that if he didn’t, she would personally take care of removing every last hair from his body.
Simon managed to please Evander when he told him that he could be his best man. Kasumi would be the maid of honor. They had bought her a secondhand pale pink dress, but on her, it looked like it had just come out of a magazine. The five of them wanted Tamaya to be the “flower woman”, but she flatly refused. She wanted to be a godmother and walk Simon down the aisle. She was not going to settle for less.
It wasn’t going to be the wedding of the century, but it was the perfect wedding for him.
“You have to promise me something.”
He turned to see her. Anything.
“If something happens to me, I want you and Simon to take care of Adrian.”
The answer escaped his lips immediately. “No.”
“Excuse you?”
Hugh shook his head. “I’m not going to promise you that.”
“Why the hell not?” Georgia asked, angrily.
“Because nothing is going to happen to you. Not if I can stop it.”
She rolled her eyes. It wasn’t something she did very often. “Wow, so heroic. Do you want a medal? Come on!” she exclaimed, holding his arm tightly. “It doesn’t cost you anything. Pinky promise, okay? “
“Lady Indomitable, you are already a thirty-year-old woman,” he scolded her.
“What, you can’t promise things for pinky anymore when you turn thirty or what?” she asked. playing confused.
He clenched her jaw, fighting to stay immune to her words. “No, you can not.”
“That’s debatable. The good news is that I’m twenty-nine. Come on … Or I’ll tell Simon to send you to sleep on the couch.”
Now it was his turn to roll his eyes. “I’m already sleeping on the couch. Tamaya doesn’t let us sleep in the same bed, she says it wouldn’t be very Christian of us.”
“Okay, if you pinky promise me what I told you, I will convince Tamaya to let you sleep in the same bed as Simon, deal?”
A tempting offer. But he couldn’t accept it.
Hugh could promise many things. He could even lie about promising many things. However, he couldn’t lie to Georgia, much less could he promise her something that he wasn’t going to keep.
Because nothing was going to happen to her.
“I’m not going to promise you that,” he sentenced. “You are going to raise Adrian. And when Simon and I have kids of our own, they and Adrian will be like siblings, and they will play in the backyard of our great mansion, and I don’t know, probably they will wear matching Christmas sweaters.”
“Our kids like… siblings?”
“Yes. We have discussed it,” he replied. “We want to have children. You know, adoption.”
“Oh, adoption, yeah…” Georgia mumbled. “I thought it was a weird way of asking me to be a surrogate mother.”
She raised her eyebrows. “And is this a strange way of offering yourself as a surrogate mother?”
“Stars, no. Although I make very hot babies.”
“That is so wrong,” he replied with a laugh.
Georgia was laughing. Her cheeks were flushed with embarrassment. “It was so wrong, I’ll never use that adjective to describe a baby again.”
“Please.”
Georgia took his hand again. The question he asked hit him like a bucket of cold water. “What would you like me to do for you if you died?”
He couldn’t. He couldn’t lie to Georgia.
“I don’t like to think that I am capable of dying. I am indestructible.”
“Indestructible, not immortal,” Georgia stressed. “We are not gods.”
He gazed at the stars. When the entire city had electricity again, it would be difficult to speak to those who were now watching them from above.
He had to see the stars while he could.
“I wish we were. That way we would never die. ”
Georgia sighed and squeezed his hand lovingly. “Dying is not why we all think it is. I believe that real death is being forgotten.” She looked up at the stars too. Her dark eyes were illuminated by the moonlight. “That’s what I truly fear.”
He would have liked to tell her that he too was afraid of that death. To tell her that he was also absolutely afraid of being forgotten, and not at all of the idea of becoming another star in the sky.
But it would be lying.
And he couldn’t lie to Georgia.
“You’ve convinced me. I’m going to make you the promise you want.” Georgia squealed like a little girl and hugged him quickly. “But if I’m going to promise something, it has to be… stylish. With big words.”
“Wow, a ritual oath. I like it.”
The two of them sat across from each other. The only thing that was heard for a while was the sea waves. It no longer gave him the creeps at all. Hugh thought carefully about what he was going to say and Georgia couldn’t help but smile.
How could she find the beauty in such a morbid oath?
“Ready?” he asked.
Georgia straightened up and extended her little finger. “I was born ready.”
Hugh locked his pinky with hers. It felt like they were back to being the teenagers they were when they first met. They had both changed a lot. Georgia had longer hair, stronger muscles, and a less scared expression. However, she still had the same perfect smile and kind eyes as when he first saw her.
He wondered how he had changed.
Georgia got tired of waiting.
“Look, I’m feeling nice today, so I’m going to promise the same back to you, all right?” Georgia asked. “I’ll go first. I, Georgia Rawles, swear to my best friend Hugh Everhart, that if something happens to him, I will take care of his loved ones as if the same blood ran through our veins, as long as the sea and the mountains shall endure.” She gently placed her other hand over his fist and added, “But I also swear that I will never let him die. If he should fall, I will catch him.”
Hugh was left speechless. He could feel the tears about to come out of his eyes. Get a grip, Captain.
Georgia noticed immediately. “Are you crying?”
Hugh removed his mask and wiped away a tear. “Modern men are not afraid of their feelings.”
“What a sentimental softie.”
But she also had tears in her eyes.
Why were they like that?
He put the mask back on. It was his turn.
“Okay. I, Hugh Everhart, promise you— “ Shoot. “Um, I don’t want to copy you. For what would you like me to say instead of ‘mountain and sea’?”
“How about… the sun and the sky?”
It was perfect.
“Well well.” He took a breath. Here we go. “I, Hugh Everhart, swear to my best friend Georgia Rawles that if something happens to her, I will take care of her loved ones as if the same blood ran through our veins, as long as the sun and the sky shall endure.” He ignored his broken voice and put his hand over her fist, “But I also swear that I will never let her die. If she should fall, I will catch her.”
And if I ever break this promise, I have no idea what the hell I would do.
Suddenly, a knife tore through the air violently and slammed into the light pole. They both broke free and backed away. Georgia was immediately on her guard, prepared to smash the face of anyone who dared throw the knife at them. Hugh leaned closer to get a better look at it. It had a dark green handle and a golden point. There was a folded paper at its end.
Nightingale.
He opened the letter. Nightingale had more chaotic handwriting than usual.
Captain, the Savior has learned that Sandman has been the one who gives him nightmares and has sent a plague to finish him off. They need help right now.
—N.
“Indomitable,” he called her. “Look.”
Georgia took the letter from him. Her eyes widened. As soon as she finished reading it, they both turned to see each other.
Ace… Alec knew David had given him away. And he was going after him.
He had to do something.
“See you at headquarters.”
Georgia got in his way. Her face was more serious than ever. “No, I’ll go,” she sentenced.
“What? No, you won’t.”
“You will not arrive there running. Not on time,” she assured. “They need help right now.”
Hugh looked away. “But—”
“Hey, hey.” Georgia grabbed his chin again, with a love that only she had. “Remember. Not even the darkest of nightmares, the loneliest of nights, or the worst of troubles…”
He sighed and smiled for her.
“Can with the boldness, bravery, and joy of Lady Indomitable.”
She squeezed his nose playfully. “See you at headquarters.”
Hugh watched her fly away at top speed until she disappeared in the dark. He turned and ran back to headquarters. The rest of the team needed to know what was happening.
He could lie to everyone. But she couldn’t lie to Georgia.
Hugh had already made a promise. And he had to fulfill it.
I will catch you if you fall.

Shattered Lives Ch 24 Pt 1
Her sleep was fitful, not surprising with Gustaf being away. It had her dreading February when he’d leave for a twelve week shoot. He’d become part of their daily lives and this trip forced into sharp relief how much he did for her, how much she relied on him. It wasn’t just the sleep ins, or the cups of tea, it was the emotional support. Having him here with her made her feel like she could handle the job of raising four kids alone. Except they weren’t alone anymore, he had become the missing piece of their very blended family.
She was settled when he was here, so we’re the kids. Now it just seemed like they were back to the scrambled mess they were prior to him collecting her runaway oranges as she stood on her threshold with a screaming Lily in her arms. Would that get easier she wondered, the separation, the busy lives and careers they both had, trying to make it work?
She thought about making partner, the opportunity that would pass her by. Deep down she wanted it, it just wasn’t feasible anymore with the kids. She was thankful she had a job and she could support the family she was now responsible for, at the end of the day, that was all that mattered. It wasn’t really a career now, she couldn’t go and do what he wanted when she wanted. It was a job, it payed the bills and fed the kids. It had to be enough.
Her mind slipped to Ana, the notebook she’d finally been able to get through. Her thoughts dwelled on his overwhelming grief for a child that hadn’t existed except in her deranged mind. How did she help him past that without causing him more pain? Of course her mind circled that one question and she shut it away, she couldn’t even entertain the idea of having a child with him when she struggled with the four she already had. She was going to have to tell him she’d finished reading it and hadn’t quite summoned the courage to do so, she knew it would upset him, which is why she hadn’t told him before he left.
She lay on his side of the bed and breathed him in off his pillow, the sheets still smelled of him too. Usually she’d change them but couldn’t. She needed to sense him here.
“I need you to cut me some fucking slack brother.” She huffed to the ceiling as she got out of bed to shower. “I have enough on my plate.” Thoughts of her plate ran through her head as she washed her hair. Meeting his family at Christmas, her birthday, Lily’s bedroom, making partner, their weekend away, Gustaf, the boys, asking Gustaf to move in, telling him she loved him, something had to give.
The kids got up without arguement and Lily, even though a little fussy because she wanted her dad dad, settled once she was dressed and in her chair. They were part way through eating breakfast when Gustaf called.
She smiled as those grins flourished across the kids faces. The man knew how to set their day up just right. She sat down and listened in as she ate, not wanting to take his time away from them.
“Where’s my lovely lady? She still in bed B?” Gustaf joked as Lily chattered and squealed at him.
“No she’s here.” Brendan turned the screen to face Sildie as he ushered the twins out to finish getting dressed and took Lily to clean her up.
“Good morning love.” He murmured, that sly smile twitching his lips.
“Morning.”
“You didn’t sleep did you?” He said seeing the tiredness in the slump of her shoulders.
“Not very well.”
“Did you go to bed when I asked?” He looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
“No, I had more reading to do. I got enough.” She lied.
“No you didn’t, I can see the dark smudges under your eyes already. To bed early tonight please.” His voice was that irritated tone and it got under her skin.
“I have to work the same as you.” She snapped back and reigned it in. She hated being snippy when she was tired and stressed.
“Yes and you have the kids to get ready on top of it. If the work can wait, to bed early?” He asked hoping she would cut herself a break. “Please love, I don’t like seeing you like this.”
“Fine.” She sighed. “Did you get any sleep?” She asked sipping her tea.
“Not much, but some.” He shrugged. He hadn’t slept well without her to curl into.
“I slept in your dress shirt.” She mumbled and ate another slice of toast.
“The one from last weeks garage escapade?” His grin said it all.
“The very same. I hid it because it smelled like you, and us, and sex.” She looked at him from under her lashes and still felt shy about admitting it.
“Then curl up with it again tonight ok?” He said softly. She nodded at him and looked up as the kids came out ready for school.
“I gotta go.” She groaned.
“I miss you Sildie. I’ll be home tomorrow.” He said, not wanting her to hang up but knowing they both needed to get on with the day, with life.
“Call tonight?”
“Yeah I’ll call same time as yesterday for the kids and then after dinner so we can chat.”
“Sounds good. Bye love.”
“Bye, have a good day.”
“It’s off to a good start.” She smiled and hung up as his grin blossomed. She had to or she’d sit there and stare at that gorgeous face for hours.
She was tired and stressed, more than usual and it irritated him that he wasn’t there to help. He had a career, Sildie understood that but it still stung. He could feel it was something more than the separation, more than her birthday. Something had worked its way under her defenses and started to bring her down emotionally, he’d get to the bottom of it once he was home, if she didn’t implode first.
She dropped the kids at school, Lily at daycare, and took a deep breath in the elevator on the way up to the office. Striding through the doors with her head held high she ignored the looks, the comments that were no doubt flourishing like wildfire about her relationship with Gustaf. Fuck them, she thought, it was her life and the rest of the world could butt out. They weren’t hurting anyone and why the fuck was she justifying it to herself she thought viciously. She skidded to a halt at the large vase of flowers on her desk, and smiled.
“They’re so pretty.” Her admin said dreamily, coming to stand just inside her office.
“Yes they are.” She said, that same wistful tone escaping her before she could stop it. Bright yellow gerberas and white daisies, her smile beamed.
She set her bag down, plucked the card up and sat it on her keyboard. She wanted to read it in private so she could savor it and the memory of him fucking her in here.
“Your schedule for today.” Vera said handing her the daily sheet. “I’ve cleared your calendar for Friday and Monday. Thursday’s going to be a pig, I’m sorry it was the only way I could keep everyone happy.”
“It’s fine.” She said softly as she glanced down the never ending list of meetings and calls. Gustaf will be home Thursday so he could maybe pick the kids up while she worked late, that would be nice for them. If he was ready, something else to chew over, she thought, if it wasn’t dumping them on him and taking advantage of the situation. That was constantly in the back of her mind, assessing, reassessing.
With her admin gone and her door shut she sat in her chair and opened the card.
I miss you love, so much my heart aches. I miss your smell, your touch, that kiss that makes my brain melt. I miss my favorite dessert, one I plan on eating over and over again this weekend. I miss your smile, that one you keep hidden from the rest of the world and only give to me. And don’t bite that bottom lip, remember what happened last time. One fucking day love, I swear.
She giggled because she was doing exactly that and felt the shot of arousal at the memory of what he had given her a taste of months ago.
You are beautiful Sildie. You are my world. I’ll see you tomorrow.
G
She was almost in tears. The man knew how to make her day perfect. She grabbed her bag and tucked the note in with the others he’d sent her. She was a sentimental fool when it came to those sorts of things. With a grin she sat and got down to business, the occasional glance at the flowers reminding her of his smile, of his touch. She had a ton of work to get through before their four day weekend. Four days of him naked and fucking her senseless. She groaned at the thought and crossed her legs as his phantom touch ghosted her clit.
“Fuck.” She swore quietly under her breath. “The man’s miles away and he still manages to make me want to come.” She muttered.
Her day flew by, which was a blessing, the faster it went, the closer Gustaf was to coming home. She stopped in at the school and daycare to let them know Gustaf would come and pick up the kids on occasion, and that seemed to make the boys eyes light up. They were half way home when her evening went to shit.
“What the fuck?” She muttered and the boys shut up immediately at hearing her swear in that tone.
She pumped the gas, nothing, the car had died. She managed to coast safely into a parking spot before it rolled to a complete stop. Not just a stop, a brick. No engine, no electronics, nothing, nadda, zip.
“Ama?” Brendan asked.
“The car just died. Like literally, the engine just stopped.” She sat there slightly stunned and looked to the heavens and sighed. Great, she thought, just fucking perfect. The anxiety surged to the forefront completely swamping her. It was cold out, the kids were with her, and her car was dead, could it get any worse she thought? No, don’t ask that she sighed inwardly, it could be a lot worse.
She looked up and down the street and noticed a small restaurant close by.
She took an even breath, forcing the anxiety to hold off for a moment. “Come on, let’s go eat and get into the warmth. It’s going to get cold in here soon with no engine. Grab your school bags you can do homework while I figure out how to get us home and the car towed.” She sighed out. What a shitty end to a pretty reasonable day.
They got settled into a corner table of the restaurant. With the boys busy with homework, Lily occupied in her stroller for the moment, she started making phone calls. By the time a round of hot chocolate landed on the table she had booked a tow for seven, it was the earliest, and a maxi cab at eight, so it looked like they were eating out tonight.
“B, can you watch Lily for a sec I need to go to the bathroom.” The kid nodded and scooted over so Lily could see him.
Once she’d locked herself in a stall she let it out. The tears fell and she just wanted to scream and beat her fists bloody. Why was it always one fucking thing after another, she thought? Obviously the universe decided they needed some more shit piled on their plate. Nothing like a second or third helping of crap a la mode.
“Enough of the pity party. She mumbled to herself. “Kids to feed and get home.” Blowing out a breath she sucked it up, checked her makeup, and went back to the table. She may have just sobbed her eyes out briefly but the kids didn’t need to see that.
Brendan looked at Ama’s phone when it started vibrating and smiled as Gustaf’s number and icon flashed.
“Hi Gustaf.” He said quietly.
“B? Hey, you guys ok?” He was on instant alert at hearing Brendan’s voice and not Sildie’s.
“Yeah we’re out for dinner.” The teen said softly. He could hear the twins in the background laughing.
“Ahhh that’s why you’re not home yet. I just tried calling you guys through Skype.” He relaxed a little at Lily’s dad dad, they were all safe at least.
“The car died so we’re sitting at restaurant until it gets towed.” Brendan said, watching Ama walk back.
“Oh shit! You guys ok? Sildie?”
“Yeah we’re fine, Ama’s just grumpy and stressed.” He said as he watched his aunt square her shoulders.
“No doubt. Is she there?”
“Just walking back from the bathroom.” The teen said handing the phone to Sildie.
“Hello?”
“Hi love, I hear your car decided to leave you stranded?” He said breathing a sigh of relief at hearing her voice, a very tense and terse voice.
“Yeah it just died, no electronics, no engine, just dead. I’m having something to eat while we wait for them to tow it.” She said wearily. “We’ll catch a maxi cab back home once it’s done.” She’d already reached her limit and he could hear it in her voice.
“Let me call Bill and have him come pick you guys up.” He said, already texting his brother.
“No don’t, don’t go ruining his evening. We’ll get home eventually.” She said shortly, hoping he’d leave it, knowing he wouldn’t.
“Restaurant address.” He said briskly, he would bully her on this and knew she’d push back but damn it, he wasn’t having her and the kids stranded out in the fucking cold while he wasn’t in town to help.
“Gustaf it’s fine, really.” She said propping her hand on a hip, irritation brewing. “Just leave him be.”
“It wasn’t a request Sildie.” His voice had that rarely used don’t fuck with me tone.
God the man infuriated her at times. She let the silence hang debating whether to fight him on it or not. She was primed for a full on knock down drag out over the phone but thought better of it. Not while they were separated she thought, that would only escalate things and she was already stressed enough, but she would have her say when he got home, oh boy would she.
“Were not done talking about this.” She huffed, he could hear the lawyer bristle in her voice.
“That’s fine, you can scream at me all you want when I get back tonight, but for right now, you and the kids need help getting home. Let me help, let my family help.” He said pointedly. Fuck me he raged internally, this woman got under his skin like no other, stubborn to a fault.
“Fine.” She growled through gritted teeth, no hint of seduction to be found.
He could hear the anger in her voice quite clearly and knew they weren’t done. He was forcing the issue this time around and had it not been an emergency he would have backed off and let her deal with it, but it was frigid out and they were stranded.
“Wait. What do you mean you’re home tonight?” She asked, her brain finally catching on to what he’d said.
“The producer I was having dinner with moved it forward. I’ll be home by ten. Daisy managed to get me an earlier flight.” He stepped outside of the cab he was in and nodded at Daisy to go inside he’d follow shortly.
“Ok.” Her shoulders slumping a little, the stress lessening but her voice still held that dangerous edge. “Well you might beat us home.” She said sarcastically.
“Bill says he’ll be there in twenty with Alida and Oona. And he’ll get Lily’s seat all set up in my car so you can get to work tomorrow.” He read from his texts.
“Gustaf.” She sighed exasperatedly. “I can do things for myself you know.”
“I know you can, but you don’t have to do anything alone Sildie.”
“Have you ever stopped to think that I might actually WANT to do something on my own?” She snapped. She knew she was nitpicking but the guy just rolled over the top of her without asking, without thinking about what she might want and she was in no fucking mood for it.
“Sildie. You have nothing to prove to me, to anyone. You are more than capable of doing it all on your own, but you have me, and you have my family.” He said gently. “It’s the package deal from my end. You, unfortunately, got all the Skarsgårds when you started dating me.” He said humorously trying to lighten the mood a little, it backfired.
“I’m so fucking mad at you.” She said, she was also hungry, tired, and grumpy. “And you’re missing the goddamn point.”
“I know you are, and that’s fine you’re allowed to be.” His voice quiet.
“Don’t verbally manhandle me Gustaf.” She snapped. “I don’t like it.” That low growl in her voice was lethal.
He breathed out carefully, he could hear the fury, that flat ice cold fury, he was in dangerous territory. This was more than the car dying and he wasn’t handling it well. “I’m not Sildie. I just want you and the kids safe and warm. You’re stressed out and I’m not there to help so I’m helping the only way I can.” He kept a lid on his emotions. “Let me help love, please?” He all but begged her.
She was being unreasonable, she knew that, but for fuck sake she didn’t need someone coddling her, she was a grown ass woman for fuck sake.
“Dinner’s here I need to go.” She said abruptly, she wanted to hang up in his face but wouldn’t.
“I’ll see you around ten.” He said not pushing his luck any further, he didn’t want her imploding, although she was already half way there.
“Fine. Be safe.”
“You too lo...” The line went dead and he huffed out a chuckle. “ve...That’s going to be an interesting conversation.” He mumbled as he stuffed his phone in his messenger bag and headed inside.
She sat fuming as the boys put their homework away in their bags and started eating. Lily was content and she counted her lucky stars that the tiny girl wasn’t screaming her head off for Gustaf right about now. Deep down she knew he was trying to help, lessen the stress she felt at their current situation, but he knew how she felt about asking for help and having her independence shackled.
She saw Bill and his family walk in, it was hard to miss the tall Swede who was as lanky in the legs as his brother. She gave him a shy wave and his face lit up at seeing her. She wasn’t prepared for this, for them meeting the kids, and her stomach lurched threatening to expel her half eaten meal she’d only picked at.
There was suddenly a frenzy of activity, introductions, more chairs pulled around the table, the waitress going a little bug eyed at who was sitting with them. After a few jokes between the kids and Bill, she relaxed. This wasn’t how she wanted them to meet Gustaf’s family. She wanted him here with her, so she could squeeze his hand when it got too much, have his scent to calm her. Her anxiety was already out of control and this situation was making it that much worse.
“Goose said your car died or something?” Bill asked as he sipped his drink waiting for their meal.
“Yeah, we were cruising home and everything died, engine, electronics, it’s a brick.” She said quietly. “The tow’s coming at seven.”
“We bought both cars so we can get you all home in one go, and anything you want to take with you before the car’s towed.” He said gently, he could tell she wasn’t comfortable, the napkin almost shredded in her lap was a dead giveaway.
“Thanks Bill and I’m sorry to drag you guys out in cold.” She said apologeticly, looking at Alida and Bill. “Not that Gustaf gave me much choice in the matter.” She muttered.
Bill chuckled. “It’s fine, we’re family. We’ll get you guys home safe and sound and that’s all that matters.” He shrugged it off as if it wasn’t a big deal, and to him it wasn’t. To Sildie however, well that was a different story, and he could see the guilt written all over her face. She’d interrupted their evening and dragged them out into the cold, Bill didn’t mind but from what Gustaf had said, it clearly upset Sildie.
At six thirty Bill and Brendan went out to clean the car out while Sildie stayed inside wringing her hands in her lap. Bill had told her to stay inside as snow, the bitter cold, and four inch heels weren’t really a good combination for what they were doing.
“It takes a little getting used to.” Alida said softly as she snuggled Oona in for a cuddle. “They mean well but can be a little bull headed.” She chuckled.
Sildie snorted. “That’s an understatement.” She sipped her water and watched Bill carry Lily’s car seat and get it ready in his car. “I’m not used to having someone look out for me, for the kids. And certainly not comfortable with Gustaf dragging you guys out tonight.” She said honesty. “He verbally manhandled me and I don’t like it when he does that.”
“It’s fine Sildie, really. We’re happy to help and besides, I got to meet you and Bill got to meet the kids.” Alida could see the headstrong woman sitting beside her was formidable and smiled, she was just what Gustaf needed. “This family is very close. Yes they all live their own lives and everyone butts out of your personal business, but when something like this happens and you need help, you’ll get it in abundance without question, without judgement.” Alida said softly.
“I’m still furious at him.” She said with finality. “I had it handled.”
“Fair enough, just don’t be too hard on the guy. He’s trying to take care of you while he’s miles away. That’s rough on him because I know he’d rather be here, doing what Bill is doing now. I can assure you, Bill would have done exactly the same thing had the roles been reversed, and in fact, has done done it more than once.”
“Yeah.” She sighed, forcing herself to take a breath. “You’ve got a point.” She softened, though she was still furious at him for manhandling her.
She saw the tow pull up and stood to stuff her arms in her coat. She was about to pull Lily out of her chair when Alida stopped her with a gentle hand on her arm.
“I’ll watch her, go deal with the car.” She smiled.
“You’re sure?” Sildie asked chewing on her bottom lip.
“I’m sure.”
“I owe you one.” She said quietly. “Thanks.”
“No, you don’t.” Alida smiled gently, shaking her head. “You’re family.”
Sildie gave her a slight smile and reigned in the tears as she walked out to deal with her car. Their kindness was overwhelming, it wasn’t exclusively a Gustaf thing. She sent Brendan back inside and stood with Bill as the tow got to work, the frigid air the slap in the face she needed.
“I think we got everything.” Bill said softly. “You might want to check it before they take it just in case.”
“Thanks. I don’t know how to repay you guys for bailing us out.” She said wringing her hands. This whole fucking thing made her uncomfortable.
“You’re family Sildie, there’s no score kept. My brother asked and I accepted. I could have said no, there’s always a choice, this was mine.” He said gently and watched her. Gustaf was right, he thought, she was already beating herself up over it.
“Well thank you, you’ve made the whole thing easier to deal with.” Externally, she thought, internally she it was a fucking mess.
“Anytime, and I mean that.” He smiled.
“Oh shit, one sec.” she said and asked them to stop the tow for a moment.
Bill watched her sit in the passenger seat and untangle something from around the rear view mirror and fish around in the glovebox. She came out with a stack of papers and something on a string, a charm or something.
“Everything ok?” He asked as she came to stand beside him again.
“Yeah.” She breathed out and weighed the charm in her hand looking at it. “It was from my brother.” She said simply and held it tightly as she shoved her hands in her pockets.
He kept his silence, not wanting to delve into her grief or to have her feel like she had to explain, it was none of his business unless she made it his business. He was surprised she’d said that much. He watched her carefully as she signed for them to take the car and moments later it was gone. She was one head strong woman and Gustaf had finally met his match, he thought with a smirk.
“Can I buy you a hot chocolate at least?” She asked as they headed back into the restaurant.
“I could go one of those, with extra marshmallows.” He grinned.
They sat and thawed out from the bitter cold. Bill had the boys laughing and even Lily had taken a shine to him. Not surprising she thought, there were a lot of similarities between Gustaf and Bill despite the ten year age difference. Taking a moment to watch the kids interact with him she calmed, the anxiety of the evening starting to ebb.
Bill smiled as they all left and Sildie went to pay for dinner. He’d already taken care of the cheque earlier and when she came out to the car he could see the lawyer in her surface, purposeful strides, and a thunderous look on her face. His brother had warned him about it and he braced for harsh words that never came.
The boys went with Alida, and Lily and Sildie went with Bill. She breathed out a sigh of relief and relaxed back as he drove. What an evening, and they weren’t done, no they weren’t done by a long shot. She still had to get the kids showered and in bed, get her reading done, and figure out transportation because she couldn’t use Gustaf’s car all the time, and she was gearing up for a throw down with him, livid didn’t come close.
No, she wasn’t done yet tonight.
“Gustaf asked me to pay for dinner by the way.” Bill said quietly, as he could see Lily had finally passed out as he glanced in the rear view mirror.
“I figured. I’ll have words with him about it later.” She said wearily, too tired and wrung out to argue, and it wasn’t Bill she was angry at.
“Don’t be too hard on him, he was freaking out when he called me.” His tone gentle.
“He knows how I feel about money, Bill. That’s not why I’m with him.” She blurted out, the sudden urge to defend herself bubbling up, her emotions getting the better of her.
“I know, he knows it too.”
She closed her eyes and forced the tears down. “I just don’t want to give anyone the impression that I’m only with him for money. It’s so much more than that.”
“Some will see it that way, those on the outside looking in, his family doesn’t.” He glanced at her quickly and gambled.
He took a hold of her hand and squeezed. “We already love you Sildie, because you make Gustaf so incredibly happy. That’s all that matters. You’re happy with him, he’s happy with you. That’s all. We’re family, we help each other out.”
“Alida said pretty much the same thing.” She chuckled.
“Well, my woman’s pretty damn smart.” Bill said with a pride in his voice she could hear clearly.
“Yes she is.” She toyed with the charm and let her mind stew as they neared home.
They arrived home by eight and by the time everything was transferred to Gustaf’s car or into storage it was close to nine and the kids were starting to get their grumpy on. They were clearly done for the day, as was Sildie, yet she still had her own homework to plow through. With a gentle hug from Alida, she took Oona home and Bill followed Sildie up to her apartment with bags and the rest of the junk from in her car.
“We’re fine Bill.” She said gently as they poured through the front door. “I don’t want to keep you out any later.”
“You’re sure?” He said standing on her threshold.
“Yes, this part of the day we have down to a hot mess.” She chuckled. “Thank you again.”
“You’re welcome. I sent you our numbers, call anytime if you need something, especially if G’s away ok?” He said quietly. “I’ll setup the car seat and head out ok?”
“Sure, Thanks.” She would put the numbers in her phone but probably never use them. She didn’t feel comfortable with it, not at the moment at least.
With Bill headed home and the kids finally tucked into bed she sat at the table and stared into nothing. The evening had wiped her out, she still had reading to do, and now she had to find new transportation. She was crunching numbers to see where the fuck she was going to get the funds for repairs when her eyes prickled, the tears falling without consent.
“Why?” She sighed. Why did it all have to go pear shaped? She was going to have to hold off on Lily’s bedroom expansion now for sure. Even if it was just a new engine, that would be costly enough. If it was a new car entirely she was screwed. She’d barely have enough to make payments and save for the kids bedroom. She rested her head on her hands and wept silently, sleep and exhaustion taking her under a little while later.

Country Roads, Take Me Home: Chap. 2
Fandom: NCIS LA
Characters: Marty Deeks, Kensi Blye
A/N: I'm telling you right now, this story may have gone completely off the rails. It's been a weird summer and...I honestly don't quite know what happened. This is your warning!
Read Chapter 1 Here
                                        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
They were up bright and early the next morning to take Monty to doggy daycare where Roberta would pick him up at the end of the day. Then they hit the road for Yosemite. So far, things were going exactly according to plan. Until they inevitably got stuck in LA traffic.
“Remember last night when I asked you about snacks? You brought some right? Because I don’t know how long I can last without snacks,” Kensi said after about forty minutes.
Deeks looked at her sideways. “Did I buy snacks? Do you think I don’t know you after all this time? Check the fridge.”
She unbuckled her seatbelt and walked halfway back to the little kitchenette. Opening the fridge her eyes went wide in delight. “You got me Reese’s?”
“Of course I got you Reese’s. I wanted this to be fun, not the road trip from hell.”
She rejoined him, plopping happily back into her seat and giving him a peck on the cheek. “This is already off to a better start than all our other vacations.”
“I told you.”
“So why Yosemite? There lots of other parks in California.”
“Well first of all, Yosemite Sam. Second of all I was looking at the out of state parks and mapping our trip. The only one kind of on the way out is Yosemite. Well, and Death Valley, but I thought we should probably avoid any place that advertises killing off visitors.”
Kensi nodded, biting into a Reese’s. “Good point.”
He looked at her. “Are you going to share those?”
“I thought you bought them for me,” she said around a mouthful of chocolate.
“I did, but as your loving, devoted husband who is taking you on the vacation of a lifetime, who buys you snacks and cleans your house and saves your beautiful, beautiful ass multiple times a week, you could share one.”
She glared at him and withdrew one candy from the bag, putting it directly into his hand. “Thank you,” he said, keeping his eyes on the road as he unwrapped it.
“What is all this traffic?” she asked, trying to peer down the freeway.
“Rush hour,” Deeks said, moving them forward another two feet.
“It’s not usually this bad at this time.” She craned her neck, pushing up out of her seat. “I think someone has a flat tire.”
Sure enough up ahead there was a much older and smaller RV half on/half off the shoulder. “We should see if they need help,” Kensi said.
“Babe we’re off duty. They look fine.”
She gave him a look and he sighed, flipping on the blinker to maneuver them onto the shoulder behind the stopped vehicle. They hopped out and walked toward an older couple evaluating a very flat tire. “Hey you need some help?” Kensi called over the noise of the traffic.
“Oh bless me, yes, thank you!” A woman who looked to be about Roberta’s age waved at them. “My Bill here could use some assistance.”
“What’s the problem?” Deeks asked.
The man, Bill apparently, stood and rubbed his hands together. “Carol and I were just driving along and we musta run over something. Tire’s flat as a pancake and those lug nuts are so tight it’s like they’re cemented on.”
“Young man if you could give him a hand we would appreciate it,” Carol said.
Deeks shook his head and gestured to Kensi. “Sugarbear, this one’s all yours.”
“Oh,” Carol seemed startled. “I don’t think—“
Kensi reached for the tire iron and within seconds had loosened one of the nuts. Both Bill and Carol raised their eyebrows. “Well I’ll be darned,” Bill said in amazement.
“Somebody’s been eating their wheaties!” Carol said.
Kensi smiled as she worked the second lug nut. “My dad had a lot of tricks.”
“I’m Marty,” Deeks said, holding out a hand. “This is my wife Kensi.”
“Bill and Carol Weekes,” Bill said. “That’s quite a lady you’ve got there.”
Deeks smiled. “She certainly is.”
“Babe, can you get the spare?” Kensi called.
“On it!” Deeks looked to Bill.
“I think it’s in the back,” he said. “Come on in.”
Deeks followed Bill inside the RV and was immediately assaulted. “Ah! What the—?”
“Oh, sorry!” Bill said. “Kujo! Chewbarka! Tank! Twinkie! Patrick Dempsey get off him!”
In a rush of fur and wagging tails, five dogs raced back to Bill, leaving Deeks covered in slobber and dog hair. “They’re tame, just likely to lick you to death,” Bill said with a chuckle.
“Uh yeah,” Deeks said, wiping his hands on his pants. “Ouch!” He jumped as teeth sank into his ankle.
“Patrick Dempsey!” Bill yelled again, swatting the little dachshund away. “I shoulda said they’ll all lick you to death except PD. He’s vicious.”
“Right.” Deeks rubbed the sore spot. “The tire?”
“Oh yeah!” Bill popped open a hatch and hauled out a donut. “There we go.”
“Great.” Deeks grabbed it from him. “Let’s take this to Kensi and she’ll have you out of here in no time.”
He received a final nip from Patrick Dempsey on the way out the door, then handed the tire over to Kensi. Together they had it on within minutes. “Oh my goodness, how can we ever thank you?” Carol said as Kensi tightened the final bolt.
“No need,” Kensi said. “We’re happy to help.”
“Well that’s not acceptable,” Carol said bustling off into the RV.
“Aw my Carol. She’s not going to let you leave empty handed,” Bill said, elbowing Deeks with a grin.
Sure enough Carol was back seconds later, a tinfoil wrapped plate in her hand. “Here,” she said. “These are some of my world famous chocolate chip cookies. Made with real butter and eggs, none of that vegan stuff all you west coasters are so fond of.”
Deeks had to bite back a laugh as he took the plate. “Thank you. You two be safe now all right?” He said.
“Will do!” They waved cheerily as they headed back inside and started the RV up.
“Well they were…” Kensi couldn’t seem to find the words.
“Yep,” Deeks said. “And you didn’t even get a bite from Patrick Dempsey.”
She raised her eyebrows. “What?”
Deeks shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. Come on. Adventure awaits in…approximately five hours depending on traffic.”
It was a lot more like seven hours by the time they finally trundled into the park. Deeks picked up a parking tag for the RV and a map to their campsite. “Oh thank god,” Kensi said as they pulled into their spot. “I need to get out of this thing.”
“You do realize we’re going to spend most of this trip inside the RV,” Deeks said. “That’s why I got the nice one.”
“And it is so nice baby, but breathing the same air as you for this many hours is…too much.”
“I think you’re hangry. Let’s get a little fire going and we can have some hot dogs, a couple s’mores and you’ll feel better,” Deeks said.
“You know the way directly to my heart,” she said, giving him a peck on the cheek.
It was quick and easy to get a campfire burning and soon they were cuddled up next to one another in a blanket, making s’mores. Kensi had just whispered something very dirty in Deeks’ ear and he was on the verge of grabbing her and taking the party indoors when a very loud, rundown RV pulled into the spot directly next to them. “Well that’s not really what we came here for,” Deeks grumbled as the RV backfired and let out a huge explosion of exhaust before giving a wheezing cough as it turned off.
“Um, Deeks?” Kensi said. “Is that—“
The RV’s door opened and a dachshund ran out, barking like mad, and lunging for Deeks’ leg. “Whoa!” he yelled, dropping his s’more and leaping out of his seat.
“Patrick Dempsey! You get back here right now!” A woman bellowed, charging out the door after him.
“Carol?” Kensi asked as she pulled the dog off Deeks’ leg.
“Well hey there fellow travelers!” Bill said, smiling broadly as he descended the steps. “What a coincidence!”
“Coincidence or nightmare?” Deeks muttered, rubbing his calf.
“It is a coincidence,” Kensi said, elbowing Deeks to shut him up. “I don’t remember you saying this was on your schedule.”
“Well we got to talking as we drove and Kensi, you made this sound like such a fun idea we decided to hop on over,” Carol said.
“Really sold it to ‘em huh Kens?” Deeks asked under his breath.
She elbowed him again. “Well don’t let us interrupt your fun,” Carol said. “You two lovebirds looked so cozy when we drove up. We’ll just keep to ourselves over here.”
“And don’t worry about making too much noise! You know, if things start to heat up later.” Bill winked at them. “Carol and I are very sound sleepers. Won’t hear a thing.”
“Perfect,” Deeks said weakly. “We’ll keep that in mind.”
“Well I guess we’ll turn in,” Bill told them. “Been a long day. You kids have fun!”
Patrick Dempsey gave a final yip as Carol scooped him up and they went back inside.
“So…do we turn around and go home now?” Kensi asked.
“No,” Deeks said firmly as he put out the fire. “This is going to be a normal vacation. We’re going to see lots of pretty rocks, eat road food, and have lots of sex. NORMAL.”
She rolled her eyes but smiled. “I’m not sure we’re capable of normal.”
“Yes we are,” he insisted, grabbing her hand. “Come on.”
He pulled her inside and the door had barely closed before he was kissing her, hands fumbling with the buttons on her shirt. “Deeks!” Kensi laughed, then gasped as he nipped at that one, particular spot on her neck. “Deeks, what are you doing?”
“Well we gave this thing a test drive. We tried out the refrigerator, the wifi, the satellite. And now, I think we need to test out the bed,” he said with a grin, swinging her up into his arms and carrying her to the back of the RV where he tossed her onto the mattress.
He whipped off his belt with a dramatic flair and then dove on top of her, pressing kisses to her face, neck, wherever he could find as she laughed. “I think you’re still a little overdressed here,” she said, tugging at his t-shirt.
“Well that’s easily fixed.” Deeks sat up fast to take the shirt off and whacked his head on the ceiling.
“Ooh!” Kensi sat up, reaching to cradle his face while he closed his eyes in pain. “Oh my god, are you all right?”
“Ow. Yep. That smarts.” He rubbed the top of his head. “I feel like that’s a pretty major design flaw.”
“Well maybe they didn’t intend for people to have wild and crazy sex in here,” she said, trying to stifle her laughter.
“No problem,” Deeks said with a grimace, clearly trying to ignore his throbbing skull. “We’ll just switch tactics.”
He leaned down toward her again and was immediately interrupted by the loudest, most frantic barking either one of them had ever heard. “You have got to be kidding me,” he said dropping his head onto Kensi’s chest.
She ruffled his hair and pressed a kiss to the injured spot. “They’ll stop in a second.”
Sure enough they waited a moment and the barking ceased. “Okay then, back to business,” Deeks said with a grin, leaning over once more.
The barking started again. And then again. And then….again. Deeks groaned and rolled onto his back so they were side by side.
“This is unbelievable,” Kensi said breathless and annoyed.
“So much for a normal vacation.”

A/N: Sometimes people ask if I base my stories on real life so, fun fact, for eleven years my family had a mini dachshund named Willy. He was a demon beast from hell. Seriously. Patrick Dempsey is based on him. His name is Patrick Dempsey because I think it's hilarious when animals have extremely human names. Anyway, hope you enjoyed! More shenanigans to come!

PORTALS
We open weird portals to the Underworld and pull the Damned out for cash [part 1]
Hellcrashers Fiction by Nonbinary Bones
I broke open the factory door with a crowbar and entered a decrepit manufacturing plant. The soot-covered facility went bankrupt years ago and still leaked chemical waste into the “Mighty Missisip’” several decades later.
For a brief moment, the only noises were the icy wind racing over the waterfront and the soft ticking sound of the van’s engine behind me. The side panel of the van slid open.
“Sweet baby Jesus, it’s colder than a witches’ tit in a brass bra out here!” Felix exclaimed.
I nodded my agreement as a mechanized lift lowered my co-worker’s wheelchair to the ground.
Jackie hopped from the passenger seat, her military boots crunching on the wooden timbers of the boardwalk.
Tumblr media
Sections of the greasy promenade had rotted away, revealing the polluted harbor below. The rancid waters stank of dead fish and petroleum. A huge rickety crane loomed overhead, its base squatting in the water, rusting its way towards oblivion.
Jackie opened the back of the van, rooted around, then pulled a bulletproof vest on over her tank top. She held another vest out in her grimy hand. I took it with a grateful nod.
Vasquez put The Club on the steering wheel, a sunshield on the dash, and began inspecting his gear. He may have been an OCD prick, but he knew how to plan a job.
New Kid hovered nearby, hands in his pockets.
“Hey Bitchnugget, try doing something useful for a change!” Felix jibed.
We grabbed our camping gear and entered the factory. Light filtered in through broken windows from sodium streetlamps outside. The center of the room was illuminated, but darkness clung to the corners. Conveyor belts and walkways filled the cavernous space like a real-life version of Chutes and Ladders. The air reeked of grease and metal. Rusted machinery spoke of long years of disuse.
Felix accidentally rolled right through a pile of animal droppings and cried out in disgust at getting shit in the tire treads. His shouts echoed in the gloom.
I dropped a duffel to the floor and opened it up, revealing a cache of weapons. We divvied up the contents so each of us had gas masks and guns.
“Alright everyone, huddle up.” I said. Everyone gathered in a semi-circle. “Vasquez, give us the rundown.”
“Today is a standard snatch-and-grab. Our target is named Aurora Laura.” He held up a centerfold spread ripped from an adult magazine. The lewd pose didn’t leave much to the imagination. “Real name Laura Brown. Originally from Omaha.” He squinted at the glossy pages. “Measures 34B, Waist 25, Hips 26. Likes puppies and men who aren’t afraid to show their vulnerable side.”
The New Kid blushed, Jackie snorted, and Felix grinned.
“We have reliable intel that the client’s Dearly Departed is being held in a Domain known as Hotel California. Basically, it’s worse than the worst ‘No-Tell Motel’ you’ve ever imagined; word on the street says each Dweller gets their own room, so we’re searching door to door.” He sighed.
The rest of us groaned out loud. “The floor-plan tends to change on its own, so watch out for that. This isn’t Scooby-Doo: we do not split up under any circumstances.”
“If you see something valuable on the way out, grab it. And I’m talking something portable. Smaller than a breadbox. We don’t want another incident like last time.”
Vasquez looked pointedly at Felix before continuing.
“Garrett, you’ll pop the Cherry for us.”
I nodded in response.
“We go in, acquire the target, and get the fuck out of Dodge. Any questions?” Vasquez looked at each of us with an upraised eyebrow.
New Kid raised his hand like a schoolboy.
“Why am I not surprised?” Felix asked the ceiling.
“What’s a Cherry?”
“It’s a door, Kid. A gateway Down Below Where The Bad Men Go.”
“Oh, right.” he said, blushing.
“Okay then, let’s get to it.” I said.
Past wasp’s nests and sticky linoleum floors I found a door with an “Employees Only” sign on it. The door-frame sagged, dislocated from rotted walls heavy with mildew. The door had warped over time so even though it was unlocked I almost couldn’t get it to budge. The factory door bore battle scars and boot prints from a hard fight with someone who lacked a crowbar. Someone like me. Busting open the door revealed a tiny office containing a desk, chairs, and an empty safe. Nothing worthwhile. I closed the door again.
From my backpack I took a jar of a milky yellow fluid and a barbecue basting brush. When I unscrewed the lid, a nasty rotting smell wafted out. My nose wrinkled in distaste as I began painting the door hinges in slime.
“What the Hell is that?” inquired the New Kid over my shoulder.
“Kid, Crashers never say the H-Word. Never. Not even Topside if we can avoid it. I told you this before we started.” I said.
“Aw, come on! That’s some superstitious bullshit!”
“I mean it.” I glared at him. “Watch your fucking mouth or you’ll jinx the whole Crash. Do not say the H-Word.”
“Sorry. What the heck is that?
“Ever hear of ‘bukkake’?” I replied.
“No?”
“Then don’t worry about it.”
“Okay, but why are you doing that?”
“This particular Cherry won’t pop until the hinges have been lubed with actual body secretions. And before you ask: no, spit won’t cut it. Just be grateful the gateway doesn’t need it fresh.”
“Are they all like that?”
“No, some of them only open at midnight or you have to make a cat cry in pain. It depends on the Cherry.”
“Can I ask you a question?” the Kid asked, shuffling his feet uncertainly.
“Another one? Sure, Kid. Ask away.” I replied patiently.
“What makes a Cherry open where it does? I mean, if they can open anywhere how come a gateway doesn’t open up in the middle of Times Square? Or in a daycare?”
I paused for a long moment, considering.
“Rust and despair. Plants need water and sunshine. Mushrooms need shade and shit. Cherries need rust and despair. Simple as that.”
When I finished painting the hinges the door creaked open on its own, this time revealing a rickety wooden staircase down into darkness. Felix cracked a couple chemical glow sticks and shook them. They began glowing with a golden-green light and he tossed them through the doorway.
I grabbed the handles behind Felix’s wheelchair and edged it closer to the Cherry.
“Hey careful with the merchandise, peasant!”
“I ain’t afraid to kick a cripple downstairs.”
Felix stood up on the other side of the portal.
“What the fuck? You’re just faking?” Kid asked in an angry, disbelieving tone with eyes wide as dinner plates.
“No, Cuntpuddle.” Felix said, rolling his eyes. “My legs don’t work Topside, but they work just fine in the Nether.”
“Topside?”
“That’s just a slang term for the world we live in. Topside is the place that the Damned covet beyond all else and the rest of us take pretty much entirely for granted. Don’t know what you got ‘till it’s gone, as they say. It’s the world you see out your window, where we get born, fuck around, and die. It is what it is and for the most part it’s a pretty okay place to be. For the most part.”
“But how can he walk on the other side of the gate?”
“I don’t know Kid, but as soon as you figure it out let me know.” I said.
We turned on our lights and the five of us moved slowly downwards, footsteps echoing in the gloom.
The staircase was built out of salvaged boards, no two of which were the same; different lengths, different colors. There were fourteen steps exactly, but the topmost step was smaller than all the others and bright red. A last minute addition to avoid Unlucky 13 perhaps.
My nerves were on edge as we descended. Every little creaking step telegraphed our movements to anything lurking nearby.
At the bottom of the stairs we found a diseased and barren wasteland. The ground was black and filthy like the Athabasca oil sands of Canada. My throat and lungs ached. Noxious smoke filled the air and made breathing a chore.
I saw a hundred burning fires lighting up the distant mountains. That made me real tense. I’d watched “The Hills Have Eyes” once and the things down here would have put cannibal mutant rapists to shame.
Glancing backwards, I saw the staircase slowly disappearing like it’d never existed.
----------
In front of us, our destination was uncomfortably close. Squatting less than two hundred yards away was a dilapidated motel modeled after every circa-1940s cheaper-than-shit roadside inn on “the wrong side of the tracks” but worse. The walls had been marred by fire. A flickering red neon sign stuttered “VACANCY” into the night. On the porch was a screen door creaking back and forth on its hinges as if begging for relief. Acid rain tinkled weakly against the corrugated tin roof.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Hotel California.” I said.
Inside, we found rusted pipes leaking raw sewage and rotting the stucco. Fungal blooms spread over paper-thin plywood with the texture of rotten leaves splintering at the softest touch. Nearly every window was boarded up over the remnants of razor-sharp glass.
We searched room to room, seeing some of the sickest things you’ve never imagined. Things that can’t be unseen. It took us almost three days to find our target. I think the New Kid must have puked twenty times during that stretch.
Sleep was damn-near impossible for a variety of reasons. The moth-eaten sheets were stained yellow, constantly and consistently damp with every body fluid imaginable.
Thanks to the AC units mounted in the walls, most of the rooms were freezing cold and when I say freezing cold I mean actual people covered in actual ice. Never thought I’d see someone with their own urine frozen in an icicle hanging from their crotch.
Some of the rooms were blazing hot, literally cooking the inhabitants alive.
“Mmm! Smells like down-home cooking!” Felix quipped as he caught a whiff of scorched human flesh.
The ice machine down the hall never actually worked until you were attempting to sleep at which point it spontaneously turned on. It wouldn’t do a damn thing when you wanted it to but it would happily and loudly make the sound of a thousand blenders grinding away at a fistful of pebbles as soon as you laid down.
The first night we were camping in one of the motel rooms when the old TV in the corner suddenly turned itself on, self-tuned those old rabbit ear antennas covered in foil, and scared the ever-loving crap out of us by blasting some repugnant program at maximum volume.
The New Kid unplugged the television from the wall, but it stayed on anyway, causing him to start pounding on it angrily.
“Kid, quit making such a damn racket.” Vasquez said.
“Okay, fine.” the New Kid huffed, throwing himself down on the bed. “So here’s a question.”
“Jerkstain, your entire life is one big fucking question.” Felix quipped.
“Where do those shows come from? Is it something the Hotel made to screw with us?”
“Actually, that is a good question.” I said, busily stripping, cleaning, and reassembling my rifle. “I’m fairly certain those shows are piped in from CRT.”
“CRT?”
“It’s another Domain in the Big Bad. Except instead of a motel imagine a sewer filled with television sets and bad wiring. All the TV channels are fucked-up versions of the worst shows ever made.”
“Yeah Dickcheese, if you survive this job maybe someday you’ll get to go there!” Felix said, holding out a flask.
The Kid ignored the jibe but accepted the flask and took a swig of whiskey.
“For example?”
“Okay, you’ve seen the show ‘Survivor?’ Now imagine it’s more like the Hunger Games except the contestants hunt and eat each other to survive.”
“Jesus…”
“Trust me Kid; you really don’t want to watch anything on that boob tube. Here’s a question for you, Kid. How’d you get into this line of work?”
“Well… I dropped out of high school and started getting into trouble, hanging out with a bad crowd. One night my gang broke into a moving van and the cops spotted us. So I ran and made it into the basement of an abandoned meat packing plant. Found a door leading to a hallway made of baby teeth. The cops following me got eaten by a monster made out of tumors and barbed wire. Bought me time to get back Topside. After that, it was only a matter of time before I found more Crashers. What about you guys?”
“Back in the day I was a long-haul trucker until I went into the wrong goddamn gas station. My partner never really came out again. I found that I’d lost the use of my legs when I dragged myself out of the Pit. I figure if I keep Crashing I’ll find a way to make them work permanently.”
“How about you?”
“Me? I’m in it for the money. Cold, hard cash. This ain’t no charity; I got bills to pay. When I do a job, I expect to get paid.” I said.
“Amen to that, brother.” Jackie said, tilting a bottle in my direction with a nod. “The bigger the paycheck the better.”
“How about you Vasquez? How’d you get into this line of work?”
“I’ve been doing this my whole life, man.” Vasquez replied.
“Say what now?”
“When I was a kid, I was a refugee. My dad brought me to the U.S. from Cuba on a raft made out of old plastic barrels he lashed together. I think I was about nine, maybe ten years old at the time.”
“You’re a Cuban?”
“Cuban-American to you, gringo. I’m a Hialeah boy, born and raised. Before ‘95, if a Cubano set foot on American soil they got the chance to apply for residency status a year later. Lucky for us, we made it ashore before we got picked up on Miami Beach. Dry-Feet, they called us.”
“Dad got a job working graveyard shift at a gas station and I started going to school. I always walked down there by myself to bring Dad a soda and we’d sit and chat for a while. One night I’m going down there right before bedtime and there’s all these police out front with that yellow crime scene tape strung up across the door. The cops say that the robbers put lit matches all over him before they killed him.” He takes a long swig from the bottle.
“So Mom couldn’t afford the rent without Dad, and after that we were sleeping rough. Couch-surfing, church pews, shelters, and sidewalks.”
“My God…” Kid said.
“God? God can’t help us, man. See, Satan led his army to storm the Gates of Heaven and drove God and the angels out. The demons smashed his palace of blue-moon marble into dust and Satan sits on the Throne of Heaven. That’s why our world is so fucked up.”
“So Dad’s spirit came to me. He was bloody and there were these tiny flames burning all over his body. He told me that demons found doors to our world. That’s why the gates keep opening, man.”
“Dad told me that he was joining God’s secret army of angels to take back Heaven. He told me that I needed to learn to fight. To stay strong and smart, so I could count on myself, no one else. To fight back against evil. So I went looking for the gates. You look hard enough and long enough, eventually you find something. And I did.”
“Man… is it worth it?” the Kid asked.
“That’s not the right question.” I said.
“Huh?”
“The real question is do you censor yourself or not?”
“What do you mean?”
“Option A: you say the things you ought to, and shut your mouth on what you actually think. You wear the clothes you’re told to wear, go where they say to go when you’re told to go there, do the things they tell you to do. In return, you get the job, the girl, the two-point-five kids, a white picket fence, and a dog. You get to eat three square meals a day, get laid occasionally, and probably enough money to get you everything you need, some of what you want, and a bed to sleep in with a roof over your head. You’re a slave but you’re comfortable.”
“Option B: you get nothing. You get fuck-all and you’ll like it because you’re free. Go where you want when you want and do what you want to do when you want to do it. Comfort means fuck-all because you’ll probably get arrested, get your head kicked in, or both.”
“So my point is do whatever you want to do because I really don’t give a shit, Kid.”
We sat there silently for the rest of the night. There was really nothing more to say.
It was the second night when the New Kid decided that he actually did want to watch something on TV. Scrambled Porn Sally was pole dancing and the fuzzy static bar was right where you didn’t want it to be.
We found the Kid staring and slack-jawed, his nose touching the flickering television screen. His eyes were watering and blood trickled from one nostril.
I shook him out of it and he mumbled a quiet “thank you.” Every so often I’d catch him stealing glances at the television when he thought I wasn’t looking.
If you were still so exhausted that none of that kept you awake, the phone rang and room service cheerfully provided a complimentary wake-up call just as you were nodding off.
Then there were the cock-roaches. Behind one door we found one of the Lost covered in chittering insects. Carnivorous, angry little bastards about three inches long and sporting chitinous dicks.
The moment it was dark the cock-roaches came scuttling out to bite a hole in your skin, pump their nasty bug-dongs in the bleeding orifice, and lay eggs in your flesh. After a few minutes, the cock-roaches deposited a load of eggs and goop into the poor bastard which then burst open and made a new swarm.
Hiding in every nook and cranny, they skittered into hiding beneath the bed and in the closet when illuminated by a flashlight mounted on the barrel of an AR-15.
The New Kid squashed a couple roaches beneath his boot and the rubber sole began to sizzle. “Damn it! That burns like battery acid!” he shouted.
“Then don’t do that.” I calmly said.
On Day Three we found a Damned that swore up and down he’d seen our target. We’d bribed him with a little baggie of black tar heroin that offered a brief respite from his torment, so we felt confident the intel was solid.
We were moving through the darkened hotel hallways, guns at the ready. The Kid was on point with Vasquez watching his back. Felix and Jackie were in the middle while I was behind the squad.
“This scary-ass motel reminds me of that movie ‘Identity’ with John Cusack. You ever see that shit?”
“Is that the one where Cusack delivers a bag to a creepy motel out in the middle of nowhere?”
“Nah, man. That’s ‘The Bagman’ but it did have a creepy motel.” he said.
“Okay, so is Identity the one where Cusack has to stay in a haunted hotel room?” Jackie asked.
“No goddammit, that’s ‘1408.’ Identity is the one where there’s like a dozen people stranded at this motel in the middle of nowhere and they start getting killed one by one.”
“Okay, first of all: why does John Cusack stay in so many scary motels?”
“Typecasting?”
“And secondly, why are we talking about this while we’re standing in the scariest motel ever?”
“Third question.” I interrupted. “Do you two ever shut up?”
We entered Room 303 and finding it completely thrashed, lingered in the doorway. Mattress slashed, threadbare blankets ripped, and every stick of furniture broken. The stench in the room was overpowering. The source was easy to spot; a cadaver lay rotting amid scattered toys on the floor.
“Rock and roll.” Felix said glibly.
We slowly searched the room.
“Dude check this out!” Felix excitedly waved his latest find: a teddy bear stitched together with human skin, complete with male genitals and real eyeballs too. Just looking at it gave me the creeps.
Giggling, Felix waved the bear inches from the Kid’s face. “Come here and let me give you a big old kiss!”
“Ugh, it’s blinking at me.” Jackie said.
“You’re coming home with me little buddy!” He stuffed the doll into his backpack.
We heard a scraping sound inside a large armoire in the corner with the doors shut. Everyone went silent immediately. Vasquez pointed his gun at it.
“Come on out of there slowly, and you won’t get shot.”
There was no noise or movement of any kind in response. Felix sighed before moving very slowly towards the armoire. He pulled the door open quickly, surprising the woman crouched inside. She was covered head-to-toe with bleeding holes from the cock-roaches.
“Climb out of there slowly, with your hands up.” Vasquez said. The woman seemed to comply with Vasquez’s order, her palms open and weaponless.
The Kid hesitated for just an instant when she sprang at him. The woman grabbed his hand, pointing the gun away from herself and he fired out of reflex, the blast ringing in our ears. He tripped over the corpse on the floor, falling backwards. His head hit the floorboards, dazing him momentarily.
She straddled him, clawing his face and howling like a banshee until Jackie stepped forward and bashed the other woman upside the head with the butt of her rifle. The woman collapsed to the floor, clutching her bleeding skull.
“Oh God, don’t kill me, don’t kill me!” she sobbed as she cowered and covered her head with both arms.
“Quiet!”
The woman shut her mouth instantly, but her body visibly trembled and her eyes welled up. Occasionally, tears ran down her face, leaving twin trails on her filthy cheeks.
“Damn guys, isn’t that a little harsh? I mean, look at her. She’s scared and she’s hurt!” said the New Kid.
“Look Kid, I explained this before but let me make it perfectly clear. She isn’t a person deserving of respect and dignity. She’s a very bad person who did very bad things and ended up in a very bad place.” I said.
“Yeah, but-“
“Everyone, and I mean everyone, in the Down Below deserves to be here. No one wakes up down here for being an atheist, or being gay, or for smoking weed when you were sixteen.” I continued.
“Every single person in the Bad Place committed at least one genuine act of pure, unmitigated evil.” I counted off a list on each finger. “Rape, murder, torture. Shoot, I’ve even been on a job to collect a Wall Street banker who stole people’s retirement accounts then blew it on hookers and cocaine.”
“The point is that they did something that caused pain and suffering to others and whatever they did was enough to earn a ticket Way Down to Hadestown.” I pointed to the woman crouched and shaking on the floor. “That includes Little Miss Sunshine here.”
“You try anything like that again, and I’ll shoot your hands off. You run, I shoot your feet. Am I making myself clear?” Jackie said to our target.
“Yes.”
“Is your name Laura?”
“Yes… how…?”
Felix gripped the woman roughly by her chin and held her face up. Vasquez pulled out the centerfold and looked back and forth from one to the other.
“That’s a positive ID on the primary target.” Vasquez said.
“Great, can we get the Hell out of here now?” said the New Kid.
“Goddammit Fucktard, we told you not to say the H-Word!” Felix yelled angrily. He grabbed the Kid by the straps of his flak jacket and shoved him back against the wall.
The New Kid stammered out an apology, but we all knew the damage had already been done. By all rights, we could have abandoned him right then and there. We could have left him to die, but for the time being, we still needed another pair of hands to finish the job.
“We need to get out. Now. We have definitely overstayed our welcome. Bag her up.” I said.
Felix and Jackie grabbed the target by the arms, holding them together and Vasquez locked handcuffs to her wrists. The Kid shoved a black bag over the target’s head despite her protests.
Prize in hand, we made our way out of the motel room just as fast as we could.
----------
At long last we made it to a stretch of blacktop. Abandoned vehicles filled the road and we cautiously threaded our way around them. Each vehicle was rusted or gutted, and most of them had corpses for passengers. The Damned turned their rotting heads to watch us pass, reaching weakly out to grab us.
Dead weeds stuck up wherever they could find purchase in the cracks. We found that the road had been melted, cooled, and reformed. Several Damned had been submerged in the asphalt, arms outstretched as if surfacing from beneath a pool of black oil. Their cries were muffled but still audible. There were impressions left behind in the asphalt after it had released its prizes to the scavengers who came later.
“Hey, do you hear that?” Jackie asked.
“Hear what?” said the New Kid.
“Sounds like something scraping on metal. Listen. It’s coming from over there.”
Obscured by the tinted windows of a camper shell, something moved in the back of a rusted pickup sitting up on cinder blocks. The New Kid crept slowly up to the back of the truck and dropped the tailgate.
A sleek, obsidian hound with a human head launched itself out of the back of the truck. Its fur was black and glistening, with a body built for speed like a greyhound but with the face of a man. It opened its disjointed jaw and roared like a mountain lion, revealing rows of serrated shark teeth.
Like a heat-seeking missile, it hurtled itself at the Kid with every intention of clamping its jaws around his throat. He brought his arm up to block the hound’s attack and the beast locked its fang-filled maw around his limb.
The creature snarled, shaking the Kid like a rag doll, intent on tearing his arm off in a gout of blood. Claws tore his clothing, and the Kid screamed in pain as triangular teeth began to puncture holes in the flesh of his arm.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw a short length of wood. He scrambled for it in the dust with his left hand while the dog savaged his right arm. The New Kid finally managed to wrap his hand around the sturdy board and brought it down on the canine’s square-shaped head in a sweeping arc. There was a loud crack as the board connected, but he could’ve been smacking it with a flyswatter for all the good it did. He struck the sharkdog in its human-shaped face with the board over and over again. The New Kid tried shoving the end into the monster’s mouth to pry it open, but the beast refused to release his bleeding arm.
The moment I saw an opening I shoved my old Ka-Bar knife right into the side of its head. The beast shuddered and died, collapsing in a heap on top of the Kid. He wiped blood and gore off his face and looked up with bleary eyes.
“Told you not to use the H-Word.” I said.
We stopped beside a rusting Quonset hut for a quick break. Jackie dug around in her backpack for a pack of smokes and her lighter. Felix went to take a leak on the other side of the building.
I took a swig from my canteen. The water in the canteen had a sharp taste of iodine from the purification pills I’d dropped in: not unexpected from reclaimed water, but always tough to stomach.
Vasquez sat the package down beside the Quonset and removed her hood long enough for me to give Laura a drink of water. She gulped it down gratefully before we replaced the hood on her head.
I mentally inventoried the remaining water. We all had plastic bottles in our packs plus had the canteen on my hip. I’d read somewhere that the best place to store water was inside ourselves. While I understood that intellectually, I couldn’t help but be daunted at the prospect of making our way across the desert without any water tucked away for later.
Rations were running low too.
We were still many miles away from an exit Topside, and the Bad Place was always full of surprises.
“Hey Garrett. Got a minute?” Vasquez beckoned me over to the side of the building. “You know what I just realized?” he asked.
“That simultaneous revelations aren’t a thing?”
Vasquez leaned in to whisper in my ear. “We are now standing in the Tollway.”
“Route 666?” I asked.
He nodded. “I didn’t recognize it before because there’s no tollbooth and no signs. But one of us is going to pay the toll. You know who I mean.”
I looked over at the New Kid. He was nursing a knot on the back of his head and his face was still all scratched up from Laura’s fingernails. The New Kid removed the sopping bandage wrapped around his arm. The wound where the sharkdog had bit him was black with infected tissue.
Together, we coldly calculated his chances of survival and came up short.
The New Kid was taking a leak on the side of a rusted Quonset hut while Vasquez and I decided his fate.
Rumbling engine noises heralded the arrival of a flat-black sedan on the horizon. A vehicle of generic make and model, the police cruiser had clearly driven through “You-Know-Where” and come out on the other side.
Jackie and Felix grabbed our target and the five of us hustled behind the Quonset, hiding as quick as we could and praying we weren’t seen. The New Kid wasn’t so lucky. The dumb fuck stood there with his dick in his hands and didn’t notice the police cruiser until it was too late.
The battle-scarred vehicle came to a stop, engine idling. The dented drivers’ side door opened and a bipedal male wearing a khaki uniform emerged from the dark interior of the cab. At first glance he may even have passed for human except that every inch of skin was horribly burnt and mutilated. Steel-toed boots crunched on the gravel as he approached.
The Trooper peered at the Kid through his mirrored aviator sunglasses. One hand rested on the nightstick tucked into his belt.
Unsure what to expect, I kept my hand near my pistol just in case.
“You live around here, boy?”
“No sir. Just passing through and found the place like this.”
“I find out you’re lying to me, we’re going to have a problem, boy.”
“Understood.” Every now and then, I caught a glimpse of scarred flesh beneath his shirt.
“Alright then. Just so long as we have an understanding between us.” The Trooper looked around at the horizon almost as if he’d forgotten he was in the middle of a conversation. His gaze settled back on the Kid. “What’s your name, son?”
“My name?”
“Don’t play dumb now.”
Without warning the Trooper pulled a baton from his belt and smashed the Kid with a merciless blow. He doubled over in pain, clutching his belly.
The Trooper loomed over the Kid, lightly smacking the baton in the palm of his palm.
“Looks like you in a heap of trouble here, boy.” the Trooper said with a pronounced Southern accent. He pronounced “here” like “he-ah.”
“You look healthy, don’t have the shakes. No sir, I can tell just from lookin’ at you. You a young man, your back is strong, and you got all your parts in working order, yes sir. You got your whole life in front of you. Seems to me you’ll make a fine slave.”
“You’re gonna dig for us with your bare hands, until your skin is gone, and you dig until your finger bones are worn down to lil’ nubbins. Yessuh, and I’m gonna beat you so bad you’re gonna thank me for the privilege of diggin’.”
The Trooper raised the baton to smash the Kid over the head.
Shots rang out as I unloaded my Glock 9mm into the Trooper’s head, blasting him over and over again. Bullets shattered his aviator shades and tore holes in his khaki uniform before the Trooper fell to the ground. We ran up and Jackie fired her shotgun point-blank into the Trooper’s face before checking on the Kid.
“That seems like overkill, Jackie.” I said with a smirk.
“Overkill is nothing but a word.”
“That stick looks like lacquered hickory but felt like rebar covered in nettles.” The Kid hissed.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here. If one Trooper found us, more are on the way.” I said.
The crew hurried into the Cruiser while the target went into the trunk like a piece of luggage.
“Buckle up.”
“I don’t want to.” the New Kid pouted.
That nasally whine was the last straw. Ice water flowed through my veins. It must have showed on my face because when he saw my expression he recoiled.
“I don’t give a fuck what you want. I ain’t your brother, I ain’t your dad. Lately I ain’t even a nice person. If you don’t do what I say when I say I will knock you the fuck out and make it happen. Now buckle the fuck up.”
He buckled up.
I shifted the police cruiser into drive and stomped on the gas. Nothing happened. “No.” I stomped on it again, shouting louder each time. “No, no, no! I do not believe this horseshit!”
“Is it a Ford?” Felix joked.
Aggravated, my forehead hit the steering wheel. The Troopers were bearing down on us fast. I stomped down on the gas out of frustration and the Cruiser lurched forward. Surprised, I looked up and the vehicle died again, whiplashing our necks. “What the-?”
I closed my eyes, gripped the wheel, and stepped on the gas. The Cruiser moved forward slowly.
“Guys, you’re not going to like this.”
An hour later and my heart was still hammering in my chest and I was white-knuckling the wheel. Vasquez sat right beside me, giving me directions as I drove pedal-to-the-metal with my eyes shut tight.
Bullets pinged off our vehicle and I ducked out of reflex. I could barely hear the gunshots over the roaring engines and police sirens.
“Can’t this piece of shit go any faster?!” Jackie screamed inches from my ear. Jackie turned in her seat, firing a few potshots at the other cruiser.
Felix rooted around in the Army surplus duffel bag and pulled a homemade pipe bomb from the bottom. He lit the fuse with a cheap gas station lighter, let it cook for a moment, then lobbed it out the window at our pursuers.
His throw fell short, and the pipe bomb landed in the middle of the road.
Whether it was Luck or Fate or God deciding to finally give us a break, the second cop car drove over top of the pipe bomb, straddling it with all four tires before it went off.
The police cruiser lifted off the ground, bursting into flame and sending two Troopers screaming into oblivion.
“Keep driving, let’s get as many miles away from here as we can before this thing runs out of gas.” Vasquez instructed.
The sun was setting, and already a cold wind was sweeping down from the hills. Within an hour the temperature would drop by fifty degrees. Sleeping in the exposed cab of the police cruiser would prove to be a very uncomfortable option that night.
And the next night.
And the next.
Four of us left the New Kid hogtied and blubbering in the middle of the road. None of us said a word about it, but we all knew our offering was accepted because we found an exit Topside within an hour.
To this day, I don’t know what dragged him screaming into the desert. But the toll had to be paid.
----------
We delivered the package to a seedy film studio on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Nevada. On the soundstage was a set built out of plywood and made to look like a teen girl’s bedroom: painted pink and full of stuffed dolls. Stage lights hung from metal bars where the room’s ceiling should be, and several cameras were aimed at the bed from different angles.
We were escorted by a couple of hired goons. Low-rent thugs with chrome-played Glocks tucked in the waistband of their jeans.
Vasquez led the way past the stage lights and cameras. Jackie and I flanked the package, while Felix rolled behind with a sawed-off shotgun cradled in his lap.
“You know what the worst job here would be?” Felix asked.
“What?” I sighed.
“Janitor. Can you imagine cleaning this place every night? ‘Excuse me sir, can you lift your feet? I’m trying to mop here’.”
“Jesus, Felix.” I laughed. I couldn’t help it.
“Every night you have to clean it! You can’t imagine the smell!”
“Sure I can.” Jackie retorted. “Like a warm turtle tank probably.”
Felix chortled loudly.
Our customer was a loathsome weasel named Bob Gunkel. He was fat, slowly sliding his way to four hundred pounds. He came out of his office wearing a Hawaiian shirt with huge sweat stains under his pits. He wiped cheese puff dust off his hands, leaving long orange fingerprints on his khakis. The very sight of him made my skin crawl.
“Well? Did you bring her back to me?”
Vasquez pulled the black bag off the package’s head.
“You did it! I have to admit, I had my doubts when I heard you could bring her back but you actually did it!” Gunkel caressed her with his meaty fingers and the expression on his face looked like he was already creaming his pants. She flinched away, but we’d kept the ankle chains and handcuffs on for a reason.
“Laura, sweet Laura, I know I got carried away the last time we were together, but I promise you this time is going to be different!”
Vasquez gripped my arm before I even realized my fist was clenched.
“Sir, not to interrupt, but if you’ll just pay us our fee we’ll be on our way and leave you two alone together.”
“Of course!” He snapped his fingers and one of the goons retrieved a couple of greasy fast food sacks, handing them to Vasquez.
Vasquez checked the paper bags and the wads of cash inside. Jackie and I watched the goon squad to see if their hands moved towards their pistols.
“Are we good?” Gunkel asked.
Everyone held their breath for a moment.
“Yeah, we’re good.” Vasquez said. “Let’s move out, team.”
“You lovebirds have a real nice time now, y’hear!” Felix called on the way out.
Later that night we were sitting in a strip club called Sin Bragas working our way through our second bottle of Don Julio Blanco.
On the asphalt, neon-drenched streets of Topside, we're nothings and nobodies. Between the fast food and taxes, the bad gas station coffee and the past-due child support payments, we’re just pieces of soiled human garbage. In a world of drugs, traffic, radio, politics, smoke and mirrors, we’re little more than dirty, disposable pawns.
Yet amongst the freak show outlaws and leather-clad outcasts, the occult cabals and deranged sickos, the demon summoners, the adrenaline junkies, and conspiracy nuts who make up the heart of the Hades-diving fringe, we’re death-defying, bigger-than-life rock stars.
Every form of fame has its own form of groupies. There are women who sent marriage proposals to Ted Bundy when he was on Death Row, for God’s sake.
Most of us had a scantily-clad woman hanging on an arm or crawling in our lap. Jackie was busy showing off her new tattoo, flexing biceps as big as my head. Her upper arm shined with fresh ink depicting a sexy Devil Girl straddling a black spade with the number “13” in racecar red.
“Well, I gotta go drop the kids off at the pool. Felix said.
Vasquez rolled his eyes and jerked a thumb towards the hallway behind him. Felix rolled his wheelchair to the men’s room. I followed.
When I stepped into the men’s room Felix was pounding on the handicap stall door. “As if my life wasn’t hard enough!” Felix shouted.
I was standing at the urinal when one of the local yokels came in. I recognized him as the hillbilly at the bar telling racist jokes to the stone-faced bartender.
Now, every man knows that there are unspoken rules of men’s room etiquette. When you’re first and there are multiple urinals on the wall, you’re supposed to take the spot furthest from the door. When you come in second, you take the spot furthest from the first guy. What you don’t do, what you never, ever, ever do is stand at the urinal directly adjacent to the first man. That’s a surefire path to an ass-kicking in my book. Of course, this mullet-wearing motherfucker decided to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me.
“You guys are Hellcrashers, aren’t you?” he asked.
I didn’t respond.
“Dude, you guys just go down to Hell, kick Satan in the balls, and rescue the souls of big-tittied single moms. Man, that’s fucking awesome. “What’s it like being a Hellcrasher, bro?”
“Ever hear the one about the guy who wouldn’t shut the fuck up with his dick in his hand?” I curtly replied without looking at him.
“Um, no?”
I reached up and grabbed the hair on the back of his head then slammed him face-first into the tile. His nose broke and he crumpled like a wet paper sack, hitting his chin on the urinal on the way down to the floor. I hosed him down with the contents of my bladder for good measure.
“That’s what it’s like.”
I was washing my hands when I heard Felix shouting.
“Hey! Can somebody toss me some toilet paper? I’m all out of shit tickets over here!”
I left the club without a word.

"This is about my pride, Riza." Roy reasoned, taking a few steps closer to her desk. His palms were up, as though it was the simplest explanation in the world. "If Rebecca knew I was incapable of this, she'd never let me hear the end of it."
A series of oneshots documenting the life and times of the Amestrian First Family.
A/N: Alright, fam - this was tough. I don't know WHY this was such a hard chapter to write, but it was. I had a rough week at work, so my writing muse wasn't as strong as usual. That being said, I'm not exactly happy with this chapter. I hope that despite that, and any other mistakes there are, that you still at least find this chapter somewhat readable.
Also, fun fact, that I forgot to tell you last chapter. I've always considered Xingese, the equivalent of Chinese in the FMA universe - so, when Elizabeth refers to her little sister as "Mae Mae", it's actually a reference to the Chinese term "Mei Mei" which means "little sister".
Thank you so much for reading!
~
"Of all the times we spoke of hell, this is not what I imagined – "
At Riza's unimpressed look, Roy clamped his mouth shut. He knew his dramatics were not going to earn him any positive points with his wife at the moment. She was far too tired to deal with his own childish commentary.
" – however, I would do anything to keep my wife and daughters happy." Roy finally finished – a near visible sweat drop forming at the start of his hairline. At the change of conversational direction, Riza gave him a dubious look from over the documents in her hands.
"You're sure you can handle it?"
"No," Roy answered quickly, too quickly for a man who was usually so confident. "But I don't see any other choice."
"I could ask Rebecca – "
"I would rather you didn't."
With a single blonde brow raised, Riza regarded her husband in confusion. "I don't understand why you're so against – "
"This is about my pride, Riza." Roy reasoned, taking a few steps closer to her desk. His palms were up, as though it was the simplest explanation in the world. "If Rebecca knew I was incapable of this, she'd never let me hear the end of it."
"You're acting like a child, Roy."
"No," Roy patted his chest, quite a sight in his military blues. It was almost amusing how seriously the Fuhrer was taking this. "I am acting like a man. A man does not back down from a challenge such as this."
Riza couldn't help the tired smile that appeared on her features at such conviction. "A challenge such as a sleepover?"
Her husband gave her a withering look. "Don't say it like that, you make it sound ridiculous."
His petulant expression had laughter bubbling up in Riza's throat. The sound caused Roy's heart to soar. She hadn't been laughing much in the past few months, so it was nice to hear such a happy sound coming from her lips – even if it was still tinged with exhaustion.
Before Riza could respond, she was interrupted by a cry coming from the makeshift crib that lay in the corner of the room. Without a second thought, the First Lady of Amestris was on her feet and comforting the child that lay within the soft pink blankets.
The scene had Roy sighing in defeat. The main reason for their current dilemma was the same precious bundle that was now being cradled by her mother.
Mae Mustang had certainly turned their lives upside down.
Winter had come and gone, and with it, so had the illnesses that pestered the Mustang household all season long. Following the solstice, it seemed like the girls came down with a new round of sniffles every week. Nothing hit the family near as hard as the flu that had preceded the solstice – however, both Roy and Riza had certainly had their hands full with both their daughters and their duties.
On top of all the sickness in the house, Riza's moods had not improved much over time. With an extremely colicky baby, the woman had felt as though she were doomed to never get a normal night's sleep ever again. She was quick to anger and extremely lethargic – two things that no one who was part of their circle had ever known her to be.
Once she had brought up the issue with her doctor, the woman assured her that it was a normal to feel this way after some pregnancies. Given the fact that Mae was also a very fussy baby, it was to be expected that she would feel like she was at her wit's end for the first few months of her youngest daughter's life.
Though her words had been unconcerned and gentle when she had spoken with Riza, Roy would never forget the serious expression she gave him as she pulled him to the side.
'Keep an eye on her,' she had said with concern evident in her eyes. The soft warning in her tone was enough to have Roy breaking out into a nervous sweat.
He had already been concerned, but after that, he was really concerned.
That was why, nearly four months after their second daughter's birth, Roy insisted that Riza continue to work from home. While Riza normally would have argued against this, wanting to be as close to Roy as possible at Central HQ, she had simply nodded and agreed that this arrangement was her best option for now.
While working from home, the First Lady was able to sleep in and attend to her infant daughter throughout the day. Roy had suggested hiring a nanny temporarily, just to give Riza more time on her own – however, that idea had been quickly shot down by his wife.
'Are you saying I'm incapable of taking care of my own infant daughter?' Riza had snapped at him, absolutely appalled by the suggestion. Knowing that his wife was wrought with insecurities when it came to her parenting, Roy had dropped the subject rather quickly after that.
The man hated feeling useless, but there was only so much he could do to help his wife when he was several blocks away at Central HQ. The woman refused to let him tend to their daughter at night, citing that he needed his rest in order to attend to his duties as Fuhrer. Thus, that left Riza to take care of everything, from night feedings to bathing their young, infant daughter.
In the middle of all this was poor Elizabeth, who was certainly beginning to feel slighted by all the attention that was being given to her sister. Though she had always loved the baby and wanted to be around her whenever she was home, Roy could see that the tolerant child was beginning to grow weary at the lack of attention she was receiving from her usually doting parents.
Hence, the sleepover.
Elizabeth's birthday had always been cause for great celebration in their household. While typically they held a party with both friends and family alike, Elizabeth had requested something different this year. Though her time spent with the Elric and Havoc children had been nice, she wanted to invite her own friends over from daycare for a different kind of party.
A sleepover party.
The idea was foreign to both Riza and Roy. Riza had never concerned herself with birthdays during her adolescence, since her father thought they were nothing more than another day of life and that there was no real reason to celebrate them. Roy, on the other hand, had celebrated many birthdays during his formative years – however, despite having grown up with a multitude of foster sisters, was completely unfamiliar with the concept of a sleepover.
Though both her parents had been quite hesitant of the idea at first, Elizabeth's sweet little pout and tears had finally convinced them in the end. If this was what she wanted, then this was what she was going to get.
However, Roy had not expected that he was going to have to run this gig solo.
Three days before Elizabeth's sleepover – Mae had started showing signs of teething, and suddenly the sleepless nights of colic, became something a little more.
In the past several days, the frazzled mother had maybe gotten a total of three hours of sleep. Between keeping up with Mae's feedings and comforting her as she sobbed from both the pains in her stomach and her mouth, Riza had very little time to rest. Roy could see, as the days went by, that the usually dark circles under his wife's eyes, were continuously getting darker. Not only that, but the healthy glow of her peach-colored skin, had changed into a sickly pale pallor.
It was obvious. She was exhausted.
On top of all that, Riza was still performing her duties as Amestris' First Lady. She continued to move forward with her plans for the new school she was commissioning and had even kept up with the interviews she had scheduled to help with the hiring of its faculty.
Roy had no idea how she did it. He wasn't even sure how she found the energy to dress in the morning with all she was doing.
Hence, why he had offered to take over the planning and execution of their daughter's sleepover party. Though he seriously doubted his skills in this department, he would do whatever it took to give Riza a much-needed break.
Even now, as she cradled their youngest in her arms, Roy could see the weariness in the way she bounced their child in comfort. She had never looked further from her former self than she did now. The formidable "Hawk's Eye" – now beaten down from a rather rough patch of motherhood. It was unfair.
"I want to help you." Roy told her honestly, his voice soft as Mae's cries finally began to subside. He walked over to Riza's side, wrapping an arm around her waist. "If I'm already up with the girls, then that will give you some time to rest without having to worry about Mae."
"So, you're going to take care of Mae, too?" Riza asked, doubt evident in her words. She gazed down at their daughter – all blonde hair and dark eyes, before looking back up at him. "Are you sure it won't be too much?"
"I'm positive." Roy affirmed, rubbing a comforting hand over her back. Even through the thin material of her tapioca dress, Roy could feel the notches of her spine. She had lost more weight again. With this in mind, his resolve only grew. "Besides, I won't be alone. Breda and Havoc are going to help me."
Riza's brows rose to her hairline. "How?"
"I've dismissed my bodyguards for tonight, so they're going to stand in." Roy brought a hand up to rub a hand against Mae's fevered cheeks. "I know it's technically below their rank, but desperate times call for desperate measures."
The Fuhrer rarely made Captains Havoc and Breda his guards, unless there was something really important going on, such as the birth of his daughter. However, he had already asked the men if they could free up their Saturday night to assist him on a 'mission'.
Of course, he hadn't told them what that mission was – but Roy wasn't big on details. Besides, they weren't going to say no to their boss.
Riza shook her head at the idea. "You really think those two will be able to help you?"
Roy shrugged. "Possibly."
The woman rolled her eyes at her husband's answer. "I think you just want them to suffer with you."
"I'm wounded by your words, madam."
This had Riza laughing. Roy's chest puffed up at having made her smile again. Perhaps, this was the exact thing Riza had needed – a night off. Regardless of any of the torture he was about to face in the coming hours, Roy couldn't bring himself to regret his decision. He would do anything to keep that smile alive on Riza's face forever.
"Okay." The woman finally agreed, the grin never leaving her face. "I appreciate it. I hope you know though, that if things get tough, you can come get me at any point in time."
"Trust me," Roy assured her, pulling her close to his side. "Everything will be fine."
~
Everything was not fine.
Sure, things had started out alright – but Roy was pretty sure that he would be completely grey by the end of the night.
For the first hour, Riza had stayed by his side as they greeted the parents of the little girls' who entered their home. Both parents, having always been very involved with their daughter's schooling, recognized many of the adults who usually stood outside Central Children's Daycare. Introductions were made and the children were sent up the stairs to be greeted by excited exclamations from the other little girls who were already there.
That was when things took a turn for the worst.
He had no idea his daughter had befriended a child of Ishvalan descent.
Now really, he shouldn't have been surprised. Elizabeth was incredibly loving and friendly, so any differences between her and others, were usually swept under the rug by the innocent mind of the unprejudiced child. Even after the situation with Miss Abra at the daycare, Elizabeth still knew nothing of the history her parents had with Ishval.
Roy and Riza had just been wishing one of the girls' parents farewell, when a hulking figure of a man walked through the door. His appearance had both the Fuhrer and his wife pausing – though it had nothing to do with his height or the rippling muscles that peaked through the fabric of his shirt.
It was the white hair and telltale red eyes that caused their greetings to catch in their throats. Not only that, but the stern look on the man's face made it obvious that he wanted to be just about anywhere else but there.
From behind his leg – a little girl poked her head out to look up at the parents of her friend. Like her father, the girl's hair was white as snow with eyes the color of blood. They shared the same dark features – except where there was an expression of near hatred on the elder one's face, the little girl's expression held nothing but hesitance.
Riza was the first to recover from her surprise. Behind her, Roy could hear the sound of Breda and Havoc shuffling, as though preparing for a fight.
"Hello," Riza spoke softly, as she crouched down to the young girl's level, Mae still absconded in her arms. The child shrank back a bit behind her father's leg, but continued to stare at the pretty blonde woman before her. "What's your name?"
The girl had just opened her mouth to answer, when a flurried set of footsteps made their way down the stairs.
"Etha!"
From out of nowhere, Elizabeth scurried past her parents, already sporting her light pink pajamas. Disregarding her friend's timid disposition, the Fuhrer's daughter tugged the girl from out behind her hulking father's leg and pulled her into a tight hug.
At his side, Roy watched as Riza stood from her crouched position, ready to reprimand her daughter for being so rough with her friend – however, her words died in her throat.
Etha was smiling.
"Hi Lizzie," The young girl's voice was much quieter than her friend's, but just as excited. "Thank you for inviting me."
Elizabeth pulled back to smile at the girl. Standing together, they couldn't have been more different. With Elizabeth's hair dark as night and eyes nearly the same shade, she was a stark contrast to her white-haired and red-eyed friend – yet, none of those differences seemed to change the way they regarded the other.
The girl's father, on the other hand, seemed almost hyperaware of the differences between the girls in front of him.
At the top of the stairs, the five other girls who had already arrived, called for both Elizabeth and Etha to make their way up to the second floor. They were shouting about something that had happened on the popular children's radio show Roy had already set up for them to listen to.
"Come on, Etha!" Elizabeth tugged on the other girl's hand, dragging her over towards the stairs. "It's the good part!"
The little girl went to follow her friend, holding tightly to one strap of her backpack. Before she started her ascent up the stairs, she turned around to throw her father a quick smile and wave.
"Bye, Daddy!" Etha called as she was hauled up the staircase by her overenthusiastic, newly six-year-old friend. As they reached the top, the other girls squealed before grabbing their hands and tugging them back towards the nursery.
The three parents watched the two children as they were dragged off by the others, an awkward silence hanging over them following the exit of their respective daughters. Once again, Roy could hear Havoc and Breda shift nervously in their boots at the tension that seemed to engulf the room.
"I expect her to be returned in one piece."
The man's voice was deep, the sound of it rumbling in his muscular chest. The threat laced in those words went without being said, and while Roy wished he could be offended by such a vicious accusation, he couldn't say the man's worries were born from nothing. What he had done in Ishval could never be erased from the minds of those who had been made to suffer because of his actions.
"Of course, sir." Riza responded easily, though Roy could hear the tightness in her voice. She too was upset by the man's words. "Etha will be treated just as any other child in our home."
The man glared at Riza, as though measuring her words for any sign of deception. Roy could feel his spine straighten and fingers twitch at such a threatening stare. Although the Ishvalan father had many inches over him, Roy would not hesitate to defend his wife should it come to it.
Lucky for him, such a fight was not to transpire that night.
Without so much as introducing himself, the man turned on his heel and made his way out of the house. The door slammed behind him, causing all four adults left in the room to jump at the loud sound.
"Well, boss," Havoc drawled, walking up to his two old friends with a toothpick between his lips. "That went quite well."
Roy glared at the man, raising a dark brow in challenge. "I would really hate to know what you consider bad, then."
Havoc smirked in Roy's direction. "A pancake-shaped Fuhrer."
Breda tried to hide a chuckle behind his fist, feigning a coughing spell instead. At his two subordinates' behavior, Roy rolled his eyes.
"I know you two are upset that I didn't tell you what was going on tonight – " Havoc gave him a look that clearly said 'you think'. Roy ignored this and continued on. "However, I expect you to remain professional just as always. Keep in mind, this is a very important mission."
"It's a sleepover."
"It's a girl sleepover." Havoc corrected Breda, gesturing wildly at their military blues. "And here we are, decked out as though we're facing ole' Bradley."
Riza butted in, quickly – cutting off her husband's surely snide remark. "If it's really that much of an issue, I don't mind taking care of it."
Both Breda and Havoc went silent at this. From beside Riza, Roy was glaring at the two men, his eyes telling them that they better not accept such an offer. Both soldiers knew better, though. They had seen how different Riza had been upon their trips to the house, they knew she needed this reprieve more than anyone.
"Nah, Riza." Breda finally said, sending a supportive smile her way while shoving his hands into his pants' pockets. "Like I've always told you, we'll do anything for you."
Havoc nodded, agreeing with his friend's words. "Even if it means putting up with a few female brats for a couple of hours – we'll do it if it's for you."
Riza smiled gratefully at the two men, while Roy's expression turned sour.
"Are you saying you wouldn't do this for me?"
"Nope."
"Not at all."
Such insubordination had the Fuhrer's eye twitching – however, a loud bang and a yell from upstairs caused a pause in the conversation. Before any of them could react, a round of giggles broke out, the sound traveling down the stairs. Roy groaned at the thought of what that noise could have possibly been.
Riza was about to say something, when Mae began to fuss from her place in her mother's arms. Roy gestured for her to pass the baby over, but Riza shook her head.
"Let me bathe her and feed her before you take over." The woman bounced her daughter, as her fussing got louder. "That way you'll have an easier time putting her to sleep."
Roy was going to make a comment on how nothing seemed to help Mae sleep, even after four months of life – however, Riza had already started to make her way up the stairs. Even from his spot on the ground floor, the Fuhrer could hear his wife cooing at their daughter as she rounded the corner towards the master suite.
"So," Havoc drawled, clapping a hand on his boss's shoulder. "Is there a reason you didn't employ Becky to help you with this little venture?"
Roy glared at the man behind him. "Shut up, Havoc."
~
If Roy thought that the night couldn't get any worse than the awkward interaction that had kick-started the party, he was sorely mistaken.
The cake cutting had gone alright, besides a few cases of dropped icing and misplaced forks. One of Elizabeth's friends, Grace – if Roy was not mistaken – had shared offhandedly with the man as he passed her a piece of cake, that she was deathly allergic to nuts, causing Roy to pause in his action.
Elizabeth's cake was chocolate with nuts added into the icing of the middle layer.
Narrowly avoiding a potentially harrowing situation, the man had fished out a cookie from the pantry to give the girl instead while the other children enjoyed their cake. The small, blonde girl nibbled on her sugar cookie while telling Roy about the time she had nearly died after eating a sandwich that unknowingly contained peanuts. At the description of a swollen throat and difficulties breathing, Roy could feel himself growing pale.
Havoc simply laughed from behind him, watching as the Fuhrer's face grew more and more horrified. Breda would have laughed, too – however, he was distracted by his own piece of cake.
With that situation successful avoided, Roy actually felt like he was doing pretty good on his own.
After cake had been served, the girls had been redirected to the upstairs nursery. While Breda helped Elizabeth pick up her fallen dollhouse – the culprit of the loud sound they had all heard earlier – Riza entered the room with a freshly bathed Mae.
Upon the appearance of a baby, all the girls immediately turned their attention to the Fuhrer's wife.
"That's my sister, Mae!" Elizabeth told them excitedly, following the girls as they crowded around her mother's legs to get a better look. "I like to call her Mae Mae!"
Riza herself was already dressed in a pair of soft white pajamas with hair wet and cheeks flushed from her recent shower. Roy couldn't help but think she looked absolutely angelic as she began to approach him.
"She's all ready to go." The girl's mother said as she passed him the bundle of blankets. Mae didn't even fuss as she was transferred from the warmth of her mother to that of her father. "I've already fed her, so all she'll need is a good rock before bed."
"I can do that." Roy assured her, noting the worried look in her tired, amber eyes. "Go get some rest. I'll bring her to the cradle by the bed when we're done in here."
Though she still looked worried, Riza could not hide the near visible relief that suddenly flooded her body. Giving her husband one last grateful pat on the cheek, the woman kissed her young daughter's forehead, before taking her leave of the room.
Roy turned towards his men with Mae now cradled in his arms.
"So," He started, wincing visibly as Elizabeth and Etha squealed over something that had taken place over on the other side of the room. "I'm going to go put Mae to – "
"Uh, no you're not." Havoc reached out for the baby, his hands making a grabbing motion as though Roy were about to pass over a weapon. "You're staying here, boss. I'll take baby duty."
"If you hold her like that, you'll drop her!" Breda commented, also moving forward to get in on the action. The auburn-haired man didn't want to be stuck in the nursery with the young girls either. "At least give her to me, so she can rest in peace."
"Excuse me?" Havoc asked, turning to his friend, Mae completely forgotten. "What is that supposed to mean? I have four boys!"
"Which I have never seen you hold!"
"What?! That's bullshit!"
A chorus of tiny gasps caused the men to pause in their argument. Looking over to where the seven girls were crowded around the dollhouse on the opposite side of the room, the men were met with the shocked faces of each and every one of them. Havoc almost swallowed his toothpick in fear, scared to turn and see the dark look that was surely developing on the Fuhrer's face.
"Breda, take the baby."
Havoc winced at the Fuhrer's flat tone, not even turning to watch as Mae was placed in Breda's arms. The man made himself scarce as he opened the door to Mae's small room without even throwing a glance behind him.
While the girls continued to stare, Roy clapped Havoc harshly on the back. To the girls, it would appear to be a friendly gesture – however, Havoc knew better. Instead of retracting his hand after placing it on his subordinate's back, the Fuhrer continued to hold on to the fabric of his jacket.
"Hey, Lizzie?" Roy called out, prodding Havoc to step forward and towards the girls who were still staring in their direction. "Didn't you say earlier that you wanted to play doctor?"
Havoc gulped as a round of cheers erupted from the other side of the room.
He really needed to learn to keep his mouth shut.
~
Roy had thought that forcing Havoc to partake in a game of doctor with the girls would somehow end up saving him from a similar fate – however, he had been wrong.
While he was already worried that all Elizabeth's friends would go home and tell their parents that the Fuhrer had some very foul-mouthed subordinates, he was even more worried that Etha's father would come and pound him into the ground for allowing his daughter to be exposed to such language. After all, the Ishvalan people were very religious, and he couldn't remember a time when he had ever heard any of them curse.
So, to distract the girls from the word that Havoc had let slip, Roy went about helping them create a makeshift "stretcher" to put the very unhappy man on.
Serves him right, Roy thought to himself as he fluffed up Havoc's pillow a bit more aggressively than any medical professional ever would. The blonde Captain gave his superior a withering look.
"Really, sir?"
Roy shrugged, allowing the young girls to take over from there, already having gathered all their "equipment" to perform a successful "surgery". The man found it all very amusing, until a tiny tug at the bottom of his jacket had him turning.
"Mr. Fuhrer Mustang, sir?" A small, black-haired child, who he believed was named Abigail, was pulling on the fabric of his coat. "Aren't you going to play with us?"
Roy opened his mouth to say no, when Elizabeth – appearing out of nowhere – began to tug at him a little more aggressively than her friend. "Yes! Yes! Yes! Daddy come play!"
"Lizzie, I don't – "
"Yeah, Daddy." Havoc mimicked the voice of a young girl from his spot on the floor. Grace was sat on his chest with a plastic stethoscope, trying to listen to the man's heart. "Come play with us."
"Havoc," Roy warned as his daughter continued to tug on his hand, leading him over to a second "stretcher" that the girls had prepared. "I don't ever want to hear those words from your mouth ever again."
The blonde man rolled his eyes, wincing as Grace reached out to hold his lids open to shine a light into them. From behind her, a young Alice scribbled away on a notepad, appearing to take notes as Grace shouted out random observations to her.
Roy was forced to remove his coat as his daughter pushed him back on to the pallet. He was suddenly surrounded by Etha, Abigail, and Lizzie, all who had donned white robes from his daughter's closet to give them the appearance of medical physicians. Two sisters, Helen and Margaret, rushed from the room to go retrieve something from Elizabeth's craft table.
"Hurry!" Elizabeth shouted after them, taking her plastic stethoscope from Grace to listen to her father's own pounding heart. "We're losing him!"
Noticing the wide-eyed stare of her father, Elizabeth leaned down with her hands on her hips. The look she gave him was quite stern. "Daddy, you have to at least act like you're dying."
Having been on the brink of death many times before, Roy had no problem playing the part of a dying patient. After heaving a sigh of resignation, the man relaxed on his back with eyes closed, mentally counting down the hours before he could finally force the girls to go to bed.
Despite the flurry of activity going on around him, and the poking and prodding courtesy of his daughter, Roy was able to get pretty relaxed atop the pallet. After a long week of talks related to a skirmish with Aerugo along the border, the man was definitely ready for a long night of rest alongside his wife.
He almost allowed himself to get lost in the image of her soft, warm body against his – when something cold and wet landed squarely on his forehead. The sensation caused his eyes to pop open, only to be met with a curious blue pair.
Helen had returned with a wet cloth and had been instructed to place it on the Fuhrer's head in an attempt to "lower" his "fever". The girl was the youngest of the bunch and the smallest as well, following the orders of the older children as they continued to move around him in mock concern.
Before Roy could comment on the water dripping into his eyes, another cold, wet sensation made him pause at it made itself known through the fabric of his shirt. From across the room, he could hear Havoc let out a yelp of surprise, as well.
"Lizzie?" Roy asked, as he tilted his head up to see what his daughter had just put on his stomach. His eyes nearly bugged out of his head as he watched her draw a circle with red paint over the area where his burn scar resided. "Lizzie! Where did you get that paint?!"
"Shhhh," The girl warned him, never pausing in her actions. "Daddy, we have to save you. I'm performing Alkahestry."
Roy groaned, knowing his wife was going to be unimpressed with the state of his shirt when she caught sight of it. "Lizzie – please, be careful. We don't want the paint to spi – "
Before he could even finish his sentence, a gasp broke out from the girl beside his daughter. Margaret, the dark-haired sister to the young child keeping vigil by his head, looked down at the floor in horror. The red paint can that had caused Roy such weariness, was now lying over on its side, its contents covering both the sheets of Roy's pallet and the side of his blue pants.
All the girls went silent as they stared at the mess in shock. Then, suddenly, a wail broke loose from Margaret.
"I didn't mean to Mr. Fuhrer!"
Roy, still surprised by the spilled paint all over his pants, hurriedly sat up to comfort the crying child. "Margaret, it's okay."
"Please don't arrest me!"
"Margaret," Roy reasoned, careful not to shift too much, lest he displace more red paint on to the floor of the nursery. "I'm not going to arrest you."
"I don't know, Margaret." Havoc commented from his spot on the other pallet, looking quite amused by all of this. "He's a pretty mean guy!"
"Havoc!"
The man's words only had the girl crying harder. "I wanna go home!"
While all the girls rushed to comfort their distressed friend – Roy groaned, while laying his head back down on the pallet. He was really starting to consider enlisting Rebecca's help, when the cold, wet cloth from before was placed back on to his forehead.
Looking up, Roy noticed that Helen was the only child who hadn't rushed to help her sister. Instead, she had remained by the Fuhrer's side with a bowl of water and a cold compress.
Wait a minute…
"Helen?" Roy asked, trying to gain the girl's attention. "Where did you get that water from?"
The facets were high in the manor's bathrooms, making it almost impossible for a small child to reach them unless there was a stool present. Even then, Elizabeth still had trouble reaching the knobs of the sink without the help of one of her parents. It made Roy wonder how a child of such small stature could have filled a bowl under one of the bathroom facets.
Unless…
"The toilet."
Times like these, made Roy wish he had birthed boys.
~
Breda returned to the room to find both Roy and Havoc sat on the floor and covered in paint. If he noticed the reddish tinge of Roy's freshly washed face, he said nothing.
The girls had convinced Roy to do "pretty" braids in their hair, after having seen Elizabeth come to school with them on more than one occasion. It was one of the perks of having grown up with a multitude of sisters. It was definitely something Riza was thankful for, since she had little experience with hair that was not her own.
Currently, the Fuhrer sat braiding Margaret's hair, the young girl's tears finally dried after having had her friends calm her down. No longer scared of the man behind her, the girl had agreed to let him braid her hair. Elizabeth, who sat beside her with her dark hair already braided, pointed excitedly at something in the book that lay before them.
Havoc stood from his place on the floor to greet Breda, pointing towards the mess of sheets and paint on the floor. "Want to give me a hand?"
Breda didn't even ask questions as he walked over to assist his comrade.
"I think Felix is really cute." Grace was saying, playing dolls with both Alice and Abigail. Helen scooted over so that she could watch the scene unfolding. "We shared paints last week."
"Ohhhhhh!" The two other five-year-olds giggled, their faces flushed with the idea of young love. Roy couldn't help but hope it would be a few years before he caught his dear Elizabeth saying such things about the males in her class.
As it was, his daughter seemed rather preoccupied with her book, gesturing for Etha to come over so she could show her something as well.
Roy smiled at her actions. His daughter certainly took after both him and his wife – always curious and always learning. It wouldn't surprise him, if in a few years time, she approached him about wanting to learn alchemy. He still wasn't quite sure how to feel about that one.
Once all the girls had their hair braided and their sleeping mats had been set up, Roy employed Breda to read them all a bedtime story in an attempt to tire them out. Though, from the look of their drooping eyes, it didn't seem like the men were going to have any trouble getting the girls to sleep.
While Breda and Havoc acted out the scenes from a bedtime story, eliciting giggles from the young girls curled up on the floor, Roy went to go check on Mae.
The infant was resting peacefully in her room that lay adjacent to the nursery. Roy was surprised that the noise hadn't disturbed her – however, with all the crying she had done over the past few days, the man figured she was just about as tired as her mother was. Careful not to disturb her rest, Roy picked the girl up from her crib to transport her back to the master suite.
After depositing his daughter into the small crib in his bedroom, Roy returned to the nursery, surprised to find it quieter than before.
The sight that lay before him had the Fuhrer nearly bursting into laughter.
Havoc and Breda were sat in two small nursery chairs, snoring loudly with both their heads thrown back. From the looks of it, all the girls seemed to be asleep as well.
Chuckling quietly to himself, Roy made his way over to where his daughter lay in the middle of it all. The man leaned over quick, pressing a gentle kiss to the skin of her forehead.
"Happy Birthday, Lizzie."
Roy was about to stand up once more, when a quiet, little voice had him pausing.
"Thank you, Daddy." Lizzie murmured before turning over, her new doll clutched tightly to her chest. It had been a present from her great grandpa Grumman.
"You're welcome, Lizzie." Roy replied, giving his daughter one last kiss to the head before turning the lights of the room off. With Breda and Havoc watching over them, Roy was sure the girls would be more than okay for the rest of the night.
After washing up and changing from his now ruined uniform, Roy was finally able to make it into bed to join his wife in blissful slumber. She had looked so cozy when he had moved Mae to their bedroom earlier, that all he had wanted to do was forego his nightly routine to join her.
Careful not to disturb Mae where she lay in her crib, Roy quietly reentered the room and made his way to the bed. After situating himself under the sheets, the man turned towards his wife and pulled her close to his chest, nuzzling his face in her hair.
Riza hummed tiredly. "How'd it go?"
Roy was too tired to explain the dramatics of the night. Instead, he pulled his wife closer and snuggled deeper into her embrace. "It went fine."
"Thank you." Riza kissed his chest tiredly, rubbing her nose against the skin there. "I needed a break."
"I know." Roy rubbed her back in comfort. "I certainly didn't mind giving you one."
Riza gave no response, already slumbering once more. Roy was just about to join her, when a shrill sound broke him from his semi-conscious state.
Mae had started to cry.
Fighting back a groan, Roy was just about to lift his head off his pillow when the door to his bedroom burst open and Elizabeth pushed her way through.
"Daddy!" The young girl exclaimed, ignoring the cries of her younger sister as she rushed over to her father's side. "Helen threw up on the floor!"
Now, Roy did groan.
He was really starting to hate sleepovers.
