Can we all take a moment to appreciate the fact that even with tag wrangling, "Lesbian Regina George" is the top additional tag in the 2024 fandom tag at 83 fics (fluff being at 78 and angst at 66).

Note 1: Tag wrangling was used to collect data. Data does include locked fics.

Note 2: I manually collect data, so there are some timing discrepancies. I collected everything within two hours however, I'm pretty sure at least one fic got deleted/ added in that time so.

Note 3: [total fics by media] The first graph does not exclude any other tags - simply the fandom tag applied. The second graph only includes the media(s) listed (excludes all others).

Note 4: [media comparison] Calculated as a percentage of total fics in that media. In the case of "total", percentages are of the sum of the total number of fics in each of the media (1996). See table version for more information.

Note 5: [categories] f/f separated for visibility. Please note the difference in scale.

i am being very serious when i say that slutstiel has a significant impact on supernatural's viewership. and i have evidence.

season 9 had a significantly higher viewership than its counterparts. for comparison, after season 4’s 3.14 million viewership, all the other seasons from 5 to 8 average about 2.4 million. and then s9 pops out with a whopping 2.81. 

let’s look closer at the individual episodes. 

you might have noticed the episodes labelled in red are among the episodes with the highest viewership. these are all the episodes in which castiel has his shirt unbuttoned and skin below his clavicle revealed. 

disregarding the spike of pilot and finale episodes, and the sudden increase in 9x12 (which coincided with the state of union address and hence had a spike), all of these episodes had the highest viewership in the season overall. 

therefore we can conclude that there is indeed a positive correlation between castiel unbuttoning his shirt and high viewership.

On MP100 Ao3 Relationship Stats

A few months ago, phantomstatistician posted a breakdown of the most popular ships in the mob psycho 100 fandom. At the time, like a lot of other fandom folks, I found the report a bit depressing. I became interested in seeing the numbers for myself and decided to crawl the public database myself to see if there were trends or other insights worth noting. This is a long post, so I'm cutting it, but you'll find background information and data underneath the cut.

A couple of notes on the original graph linked above.

First, there's nothing wrong with it! OP does a major service to fandom community by taking stats requests and compiling them. The report itself is a sample of about half of the current archive. MP100 as whole on Ao3 hovers around 9k total works. The original graph also includes works across languages, word counts (works under 100 words are most likely podfics or art), and crossovers. It's also displayed as a pie chart, which I think some people might find misleading. The pie slices in that graph represent parts of a whole where the whole is the Top Ten, not the archive in its entirety.

I wrote my crawler. It worked, and I was able to grab metadata from the public works in the archive. For an initial crawl, I limited initially to English works only, to works with word count > 100, and to no crossovers. If you're interested in my reasoning for doing things this way, I can expand on that in a separate post.

Please also note: I last crawled the archive on 22 May, and in respect for policy, I observed Ao3 rate limit policy, and I only crawled publicly available works (read: no works from locked accounts are included).

I chose to plot in bar to make it more clear that the top 10 alone is only a slice of the overall pie itself. For example, SeriRei is only about tagged in about 19.4% of the works I crawled.

I’m going to do my own modified AO3 wrapped thing here, just for my own records and acknowledgement of what this year was for me, both in fic writing and in writing on my novel. If you feel like checking out your own 2022 stats and going, “Well, would you look at that!” feel free to join me! :D

My total words written in 2022: 202,347! For the first time with @gywo I went for the Basic challenge, and I’m so happy and proud that I made it there! 

The number of words I posted to AO3 was 132, 935. Which means the difference, 69,412, is what I wrote on my original novel this year. By my count, I have around 50k left on the novel total, so I didn’t sign up for Basic again, just a Modest 150k. I think I can manage 100k in fic again. :D

It was my 10th year writing in the Harry Potter fandom, and I celebrated that with 10 ficlets written in January of last year. I posted three ficlets last night, and that brought me to a total of 300 fics now on AO3! 

My stories that did best this year, by hits or by kudos pretty much were:

1. The Only Magic Left Between Us

2. Dicking Draco Down

3. Phoenix in the Fire

and then depending on which metric I’m using:

Good Boy, Music in the Darkness, Willing Blood (written with the glorious @the-starryknight), and Gather Your Will with Mine (of which I only wrote about 100 words, so I don’t think I can take much credit; it was a group effort of love).

I wrote for three fandoms this year. Mostly HP of course. But I also managed several Captive Prince stories, and one wee Locked Tomb piece.

I’m really happy with this year of my writing life. I met my big writing goal, almost met my novel goals (though to be fair they were mighty and I had to go and be sick from Thanksgiving through the end of the year, which messed with how much I’d planned to write on it during that time). I’m very pleased with the words I did write, both for fandom and on my novel. I’m excited for what’s to come!

Thank you all for being in this fandom with me, whether you’re a writer, an artist, a reccer, an avid reader, a commenter, etc. For the fandom olds, a high five for us still kicking around; for people new to fandom this past year, I hope 2022 was joyful and creative for you and that you met, like I have, close and wonderful friends to share this love with; to those of you just finding the fandom now, welcome! I think the most interesting part of this is how much cadnis declined between the broadway and movie musical. They are very close to top ship in the broadway fandom tag (and was the top ship in that tag until the movie musical came out, from what I know). In the 2024 tag, they don't even make the top 10.

After I figured out the (sometimes approximate) dates I started watching all of the BL and other queer(ish) shows I’ve seen this year I wanted a visualization of it all, so I wrangled google sheets into giving me something. These are the approximately 65 shows I’ve started since July. (I also started Love Stage on Nov 23, but it fell of the chart.) I’ve only finished 47 of them, and several I dropped after less than one episode.

KinnPorsche I actually started sometime in June, but i left that part off, along with the six or so Chinese censored BLs and bromances I watched in May and June, because they made the chart too long and harder to read.

I binged KinnPorsche then, up until I ran out of available episodes (I think episode 7 or 8), then didn't get back to until I binged the rest around July 20. And thus a hyperfixation was born. You can see I immediately fell into the throes of it, and was stuck there for the end of July and all of August, and then it slowly died down as my watching has ebbed and flowed at a gentler pace.
