Six Non- Negotiables

So, on one of my favorite podcasts some time ago they were discussing how some people make lists of all the qualities they'd like to find in a significant other. They agreed with this idea to an extent, but said that we can get wrapped up in small details. A winning formula instead, they proposed, is to be very clear on six non-negotiable things- six things that if a potential partner is missing even one, you do not pursue a romantic relationship any further. On the flip side, if they do indeed demonstrate all six, that their shortcomings will not bother you and you'll be way less likely to nitpick them. After much consideration, these are my six:

1. Sense of Humor- from the worst of the dad jokes and cringe worthy puns, to high brow sarcasm and good natured roasting...a full spectrum of humor. An ability to keep things light within reason when it comes to mistakes, accidents, and unfavorable situations. Laughter is severely underrated.

2. Loyalty- you will never have to question my feelings or intentions with you, and I would expect the same. No games, no trying to make each other jealous. I'm not going to worry about you when you go out without me because I know you'll stop anyone trying to be cute in their tracks. When we have disagreements we won't run elsewhere or seek attention from anyone else. You will know and feel that you are my priority regardless of what comes up...and vice versa. I also know that you'll be loyal to your friends, loved ones, and above all else, yourself.

3. Self Care- this is physical, mental, and emotional. Physically- I don't expect you to be an all star in the gym and eat salads every day, but treat your body like the temple it is. Give a damn about how you feel and act in a manner to keep yourself energized and running well for years to come. Mental- read, grow, learn. Talk about issues, worries, problems, don't ever be scared to communicate or seek help and advice when needed. Emotional- be active in all of your relationships, stay in touch with those you care about. Do things that make you happy. Be sure to have a healthy life outside of our relationship and be self sustaining- to put the bulk of the responsibility of your well being on your other half is stressful and will burn you both out.

4. Adventurous- sporadic road trips, jumping fences to explore closed off places, trying new foods, backpacking through different countries, jumping headfirst into things without a clear plan and managing challenges as they pop up. Generally having an excited outlook on tackling things that have never been done before, places that have yet to be explored, skills we have yet to develop. Wanderlust. A desire to travel and contempt for letting yourself ever become too comfortable in one spot. The kind of partner in crime that's down for anything because they know if they're with you, whatever you end up getting into will be a good time. Someone that not only tolerates my mischevious, can't sit still side, but embraces and promotes it.

5. Passionate- passion is sexy. Feeling so strongly about things that it sets your soul on fire. I don't care if your passion is not typically something I find interest in- if you love it then I want to know every detail you can give me about it. Passion for life- finding within yourself enthusiasm for even the smallest of things makes every single day so much more enjoyable. And last but not least- passion in our relationship. Fuck the honeymoon phase. We will find ways to ignite the fire and keep it burning. I want to create the kind of love where people can feel the intensity of feeling between us just by the way we look at each other. The type of passion where we're not giving and taking, but giving and giving without any hesitation knowing that the other wants to give just as much.

6. Kindness- genuinely be kind. Put off a good vibe. Be the type of person that warms a room with your presence. Smile. Keep your exchanges with strangers pleasant and lighthearted. Don't be the type of person to cause a scene over a wrong order or slight injustice. People will be shitty. You shouldn't let them drag you down to their level- understand that it's not about getting your point across, and even though it may feel like a loss, being kind in a moment of anger will bring you more peace in the long run. However, you should not be a pushover. Don't compromise your happiness to cater to someone else's needs...and know the thin line between being nice and flirting.

One of the important things to remember is in order to expect or ask for these things in someone else, you must embody and practice them yourself. Like attracts like.

I'm putting this out there as a documented guide for myself. I will not settle for less. There's no maybe I'll find this person...I either will or I won't. If I don't, there's always dogs. #neversettle
