Perseverance! Rookie member of the EEG’s field research team. She’s a nerd-jock newbie who wants her idols to like her sooooooooooo bad.
-> Biology major with a particular interest in ecology! And bugs she likes bugs. And really all sorts of fun crawly invertebrates.
-> Perse is no stranger to the EEG headquarters, she’d been coming here for years before her official admission to the team! With two older relatives to shadow, she got to know a lot of the older members during her frequent visits. She greatly admires all of them.
-> She maintains some terrariums to raise and study copepods and amphipods. As well as several potted plants.
-> Perse has the same level of passion discussing a new and as of yet undocumented species as she does showing off the cute little house moth that almost gave Maven a heart attack.
-> She’s a hobbyist photographer with a Leica 1(A) 35mm. She’s into wildlife photography, and though her work isn’t very technically impressive, you don’t need to be an ace at something to have fun with it!
-> Perseverance maintains that she is NOT a nerd like her cousin, Maven, is a nerd.
-> She’s very athletic and energetic. She enjoys a daily jog, and plenty of exercise both indoors and outdoors. She loves going on hiking or full on camping trips with her uncle Phoenix.
-> She and Phoenix are very close. They’ve got a really easygoing and playful dynamic, with plenty of in-jokes built up between them. Phoenix was a constant in her early life, almost a third parent. He’d often visit to play with her and to babysit so her dads could enjoy a free evening every so often. He still dotes on her as much as Perse will let him get away with, but he respects that she values having a more adult relationship now. Still with plenty of fun, of course!
-> Perse and Maven weren’t really around each other as young kids, but became friends as they got a little older. Maven’s scientific leanings led to Perse finding and developing her own passion for study and exploration. Maven and the rest of her family have been nothing but supportive and nurturing, and she’s grateful for it. But she wants to make sure they know she’s not just a little girl anymore, and she’s ready to be the one offering support when needed.
-> She’s more than willing to get her hands dirty and to do ‘boring’, menial work. Especially if it means the people she looks up to see how diligent and cooperative she is :)
-> Perse is very needlessly competitive, though in a lighthearted sort of way. She doesn’t mind taking a loss, because it’s more about the challenge than the winning. It’s about the thrill. But don’t expect her to go easy on a challenger, because she still plays to win. Game night is a disaster

just my contribution for the self aware delulu peopelk.
This is my first time doing this,
kinda nerbus👉👈
A faint sound of something rings through Rovers ears...
What is that sound..? Jingle of bells?... Of keys?
Questions after questions filled our dear Rovers head until they woke up.
(I forgot wtf happened in the prologue much🥰)
Rover sometimes felt disconnected in their surroundings leading to them not remembering what happened in the past couple hours but they persevere
After they "settled" into their surroundings, they can still hear faint noises that aren't supposed to be there
Such noises are: Wind chimes, Water droplets, Ruffling of what seems to be sheets, Heart thumping, Mechanical taps, Lights flickering and some more
Rover thought that the sounds would fade away after a couple more days but...
It grew more loud.
Now the noises includes: Laughter, Screeching, Owl hoo? and words that the rover still can't understand.
Its bothering them, but they noticed that every time these sounds grow louder they too grow in strength.
So they endured the sometimes loud screams screeching in their ears
But today they heard someone called their name but there's no one around and the voice is different than Yangyang and Chixia.
"Rover..ro...r....m...com...ing..over....o..ver" (If you get my reference then good jobs)
Rover is ?
Then they heard it again more clearly than before
"There's a chest over there.."
!?
Rover suddenly felt their body moved without their control.
Rover now understands why sometimes they feel disconnected in their body as they "faint"
Liike it? Yes yes its very nice! Thanky ou!
Im dealing with my own devils rn sorry

“I’ll be signing off here, soon.” - InSight, Dec 20th 2022
“So, Human Andrea? Why we have landed on the [Planet of the War God]?”
The human before xem, entrenched in gear and insulated materials, face unseeable through the dark transparent mineral making up what they see through, spoke, “I was wondering if someone had, well, returned something.” Xir observed the lingering periwinkle across her nape and shoulders, tinting the usual peppy green she exuded.
“What is there to return? Humanity had never inhabited the [Planet of the War God], I believe. You achieved mass FTL travel before you learnt planet terraforming.”
“Hah,” the female laughed, “We may not have inhabited [Mars] but we did send… rovers. To see what it was like. We had planned, or discussed at the least, the inhabitability of it.”
They trudged through the barren dirt, Andrea staring determinately in one direction, likely observing a tracker of some sort on their HUD. Xir curiousity eventually got the better of xem.
“What, exactly, are you looking for, Human Andrea?”
The woman huffed, amused, “Well, I’m looking for the rovers, of course.”
“But why? Surely, by now, the rovers would’ve broken down?”
“Oh, probably.” Andrea’s body language, from what they could observe, was amused. Deeply so, even. The spike of yellow-green, followed by a melancholy purple deepened from the prior periwinkle cemented the fact. Deeply amused by xir confusion yet quite sad about their topic of conversation.
“I’m looking for InSight, mostly, but Sojourner, Spirit, Perseverance, or Curiousity are fine too. Maybe i’ll find Opportunity, but… Oh! Well. My scanners are showing that all of them are still here.”
The spike of wistfulness was unexpected, an almost positive tint to her words.
“You had said you were wondering if someone have returned something, why ‘returned’?”
“I was wondering if someone remembered them.” Here, it was sadness.
Xir blinked, or at least, that’s what xey believed how Human Andrea would describe xir Sight-Reset. Xey were blinded by the [spectrum of the sky] that flowed through her green.
“You are sad, that no one seems to have remembered these inconsequential rovers, yet you are… happy? That they are here for you to find?”
A spike of irritation, quickly washed away by resignment. “We humans pack bond to anything, Scylla, they’re not inconsequential to me.”
Xey do not believe that long-[powerless][dead][lost][depleted] rovers had impact on Human Andrea’s life, short as her existence (in terms of a human) had been. Still, xey trudged forward with the young adult, silent and grave as Human Andrea walked, a [ceremony of the dead] march, for comrades lost.
If xey had a phrase to describe it… ah, what was that saying in the [Lands of the Pariahs] of their home?
‘For as long as you exist, in memory or in bone, there is neither death nor [death in memory]’
Some notes about this for clarification and other stuff below :D
Andrea means Manly, and i thought it was fitting when i searched up the name halfway through writing.
Scylla, the alien, is a synaesthetic species wihout ‘eyes’ Xey are capable of seeing emotion (although everyone’s emotions have different colours. There is no universality to it. Someone’s anger could be a deep dark blue, for example, not a plain red.)
The ‘body language’ Scylla is referring to is, in fact, the synaesthesia that ripples with Andrea’s movements and emotions.
Scylla is indeed named after a deep sea greek monster, no i do not know why, but it is a nickname, not xir actual name (andrea gave it to xem after failing to pronounce xir actual name several times)
The phrases or words in square brackets are words that are being transliterated (if i’m using that word correctly) they are essentially words that i would’ve liked to have an english word for, or thought wouldn’t have the same terminology for an alien species.
Yes, i chose to make xem use ‘planet of the war god’ because i wanted to.
‘Spectrum of the sky’ is ‘rainbow’ if that wasn’t obvious.
the four phrases/words in a row were for long-dead except meant to be a more ‘general’ term for ‘loss of existence’ where ‘loss of existence’ wouldn’t have been gramatically or thematically correct.
‘Ceremony of the dead’ is indeed ‘funeral’ and, ‘death in memory’ is for a word i wish exists. It would make my poetry so much easier.
The ‘Land of the Pariahs’ mentioned is a barren desert on Scylla’s homeland. Nomads travel it, and are known for the hundreds of stories passed down, growing generation by generation, of pictures and pieces of lives once lived.
Scylla thinks the rovers had no impact on Andrea because they were a good few decades ago, actually. The newer ones were later retrieved, but Andrea had heard about these ones from grandparents etc. and fell in love with them.
This was written upon my knowledge of InSight’s loss of power, because of the dust build up on it’s solar panels. I pay my respects to the lander, and wish whatever tiny sliver of existence it had a peaceful future exploration of things that we do not know.
Finally, thank you for reading this! I hope you have a nice day/night and may we one day give our rovers and drones and landers their respectful resting places.

I really like the designs of the Planetbots they are so so cute
For a while I thought that Mar's cat was one of the two moons. I guess if that were true then Jupiter with its 90 or so moons would, uh...
thank you for enjoying my silly robots ..as for mars' cats, theyre actually named after the currently active mars rovers!

With NASA naming the Octavia E. Butler Landing on the planet Mars on March 4, 2021, including an inscription inside the Perseverance rover of her most well-known verse (“All that you touch / You Change. / All that you Change / Changes you. / The only lasting truth / Is Change.”), and new media exploring her writing, Butler’s works continue to gather us like seedlings, continue to inspire generation upon generation of scientists, speculative fiction authors, activists, and readers of all kinds:
“We are a harvest of survivors. But then, that’s what we’ve always been,” Butler writes as Lauren Olamina.

Imani's Pokemon Part 1: The Main Guys
( also slight spoilers ahead!)
June: Primarina, Male, has a serious nature and mischievous. June is the leader of the group, and Imani's ace. He's generally calm and kind, but much like his trainer has a bit of a mischievous side to him. Loves to preform when given the chance. Has a very homoerotic rivarly with another pokemon on Imani's team ( which will be introduced in a different post).
Mira: Nidoquee(shiny), female, has a modest and somewhat of a clown. Mira is the second pokemon Imani has caught, and June's right hand woman. Always there to lend and ear, has that Big Sis energy. Is a sucker for puns, and will make them at everyone's expense.
Sunflower: Chandelure, female, has a rash nature and is impetuous and silly ( I'm noticing a pattern). Technically the oldest, being ghost type, but is physically and mentally the youngest. Well, she was, until Poppy. Energetic, optimistic and a little too eager to prove herself, Sunflower is definitely a great addition to the team!
Heart: Sylveon, male, has a docile nature and is alert to sounds. One of the older Pokemon of the group, despite his circumstances of existence. He's the emotional crutch of the group, wise and patient with the biggest heart there. Sunflower affectionately calls him "gramps" ( he's not that old.....and she's technically older than him!)
Autumn: Leafeon(shiny), male, Naive and Love to Eat. The younger eeveelution. While not as energetic as Sunflower ( in fact I would say he's rather introverted....and older physically and mentally) he is just a bit more impressionable. Fortunately Heart basically took him under his wing when he joined the team proper, so he doesn't get into too much trouble. He....tends to get crushes easily. ( also he's banned from every kitchen ever)
Rover: Arcanine, male, Jolly and Likes to Run. Before there was Sunflower, there was Rover, and boy is he just a ray of sunshine. He wears his heart on his sleeves, and is always earnest about everything. Tries to see the best in people, and genuinely wants to be friends with everyone. The goodest boi. He's surprisingly close to a certain chimera.
Solace: Silvally, nonbinary, Adamant and likes to thrash about. Arguably the hardest one for Imani to bond with. They has a temper and a great distrust of, well, everything and everyone. They hated how everyone tried to coddle them at first. But overtime, they grew to understand that they were 1) safe and loved and 2) not expected to be a weapon. Upon realizing that, they let their guard down, and let themselves life, for once. Has grown, ahem, close to Rover. Will deny everything if asked about it.
Thorn: Heracross, female, Naive and good perseverance. Chill as hell. While not as impressionable as Autumn, her go with the flow attitude tends to let her get dooped once or twice. She is. Remarkable strong despite this. Sometimes isn't even aware of her own strength. This is amplified when she mega evolves, where she becomes near unstoppable. She is a really good teacher, helping the newer pokemon train. ( is also banned from every kitchen ever)
Nancy: Mawile, female, Careful and Capable of taking hits. And before their was Heart, there was Nancy. She tends to be nervous around others, however. For a long time, she was Imani's emotional link to her mother. Their bond was so strong that she was even able to mega evolve! She was hesitant to meet Heart, especially since she was named after his dead trainer. But Heart took her face into his ribbons, smiled at her and told her that she looked just like her mother, and that both her and Nancy would be so proud to see to see the pokemon she has become. Needless to say, both of them shed a lot of tears that day.
And yeah! Those are the main mons! I wanted to add to more but it's late and I don't want this to be insanely long. I hope you enjoy this!

[from the leave an object meme]
for Knuckles: the title and deed to Terra Del Sol Vineyard, in [smudged out location], bequeathed by [redacted].
For Hal and Clu: acceptance letters for a month-long internship working with their choice of the Perseverance Rover, James Webb Telescope, Juno, or New Horizons missions.
Sonic: An invitation to play an off season game with the Boston Red Sox and tickets (game and plane) for the entire family to go watch.
For Tails: Acceptance letter for an internship at Encom
For Soneca: Tickets to Parc Asterix (IDK what else to give her, I don't know much about her, tbh...)
For Tes: An obscure Dada painting by an unknown artist (I don't know much about what he likes, either.)
Knuckles, after Googling what a vineyard is, was ELATED. Someone left him AN ENTIRE FARM OF GRAPES!! (LOL, he's not actually a muse of mine, but he interacts with Sonic a lot. Same for Tails.)
------------
The program and the AI weren't sure which to choose. All were exciting, though Perseverance didn't get to see the stars. Upon further research (with Ed's help), Clu and Hal decided the James Webb Space Telescope suited them best (Hal's siblings gladly took the spots on the other three projects). With another laser built and connected to the Telescope (also with Ed's help, and Dr. Chandra's), they were even able to enter its (much smaller) Grid and help its team of programs fix a few problems the Users were having trouble with, as well as teaching them how to avoid future problems (though when their time with the project was over, the team kept their contact info, just in case the computers had issues again)
-------------
Little Sonic couldn't contain his excitement as he raced through the house looking for Ed.
"DADDY!!! Daddydaddydaddy, looklooklook!! Lookit what I just got! A real baseball team wants ME to play with them! In a REAL game! And you guys get to come watch!!" This was pretty much a dream come true for the little hedgehog.
At the game, of course questions were asked, and some even laughed that they had a tiny child on the team (he had his own little Red Sox uniform and official equipment).
The laughing stopped once the game started and it was quickly realized that this little kid was GOOD. Really good. His family certainly wasn't surprised when Boston absolutely DESTROYED the other team (a very hard to beat team) on the scoreboard and Sonic was named MVP of the game.
-----------
Tails knew Encom of course, only the biggest tech company out there. Some of his own tech was Encom (the stuff he had to do the least upgrades on because it was already plenty good.) Of course Mackey and others scoffed when hearing that Tails was eight, but like Sonic at his game, the laughing stopped when they saw what he could do and how much better things worked when he was done with them.
-------------
Soneca grinned. Even though she could run faster than any of them, she still loved going on roller coasters, and this place had some pretty famous ones. Of course, they would need to update the Miles Electric for French, so they wouldn't have a repeat of Sonic and Tails' trouble in Siberia.
-----------
Tesler was........confused, though he could pick out pieces of Occupation media and propaganda that had been altered (as if cutting them up wasn't altering enough. Pavel would've thrown a fit........With this in mind, Tesler prominently display the obviously (and humorously) anti-Occupation piece in his office, where the obnoxious commander HAD to see it.

I was tagged by @onmywaytonarnia so here's some stuff about me
Nickname: Florida Man or just Florida (god help me, I hate it down here...)
Sign: PEDESTRIAN X-ING, REST AREA - 3 MILES, or perhaps SPEEDING FINES DOUBLED WHEN WORKERS PRESENT (I do not believe in astrology)
Height: 6'1" or 6'2"
Last thing I googled: Perseverance rover
Song stuck in my head: for some reason I have a mashup of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls and Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson stuck in my head. I don't know if I actually heard a mashup somewhere, or if they were both part of that 4-chords song by Axis of Awesome, but I can't stop thinking of the two choruses layered on top of each other (🎶and I don't want the world to see me cause I don't think that they'd understand/🎶I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly🎶)
Follower count: officially 3222, but I noticed when I was just starting out that tumblr inflated the actual count by like 20, 30, 40%. When it said I had 100 followers, I counted, and I actually had 85. When it said I had 1000, I only had like 700. I stopped counting after that, so I have no clue how many I actually have right now. Probably more than 1000, but probably not more than 2000. I have maybe 100 followers who regularly interact with my stuff, about 30 of whom are mutuals (maybe 10 or 15 close friends).
Amount of aleep: AHAHAHAHAHAHA (5, maybe 6 hours on a good night? Sometimes none, just endless tossing and turning because my brain won't shut off)
Lucky number: 13, and I'm not being ironic about that. I'm serious. 13 is my favorite number of a variety if personal reasons
Dream job: I want to be part of a creative team, I want to work with a bunch of people to make something for people to see! I want to make art, and I want to collaborate so I'm not alone. Writing scripts or making props or dressing sets, some manner of production design. I want to craft!
Wearing: Goodfellow t-shirt and cargo shorts
Movie/book that summarizes me: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir feels like it was written for me personally. That is how my thought process works, that is how I deal with problems, that is who I want to be. I have a higher than average understanding of math and science but I always try to explain it in as simple terms as possible for people who find it all too daunting. This is the kind of book I want to write, sci-fi that explains the sci.
Favorite songs: Ramblin Man, the Gambler, Country Roads, the Devil Went Down to Georgia (I'm noticing a country pattern...), anything by Weird Al Yankovic (Hardware Store and Albuquerque are probably my top 2 of his),the Little Shop of Horrors movie soundtrack, White Squall and Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers (I went through a sea shanty phase when Wellerman was big), anything by Jonathan Coulton (Skullcrusher Mountain, Code Monkey, Blue Sunny Day, Big Wide World One, Shop Vac, Mandelbrot Set, to name a few), Climb Out Your Window, Addicted, and Here We Go by Walk off the Earth, and the Celtic Woman cover of Danny Boy (this is my go-to cry song; if I need a nice long cry, I put this on and it all comes flowing out of me)
Favorite instrument: I love brass, trumpet specifically, I could listen to Louis Armstrong all day
Aesthetic: analog technology, typewriters, instant photography, clockwork watches without quartz, sacrificing convenience for the sake of privacy, nostalgia for the early 2000s (but through the eyes of a child, so no George W. Bullshit)
Favorite author: per capita, Andy Weir. He's only written 3 books, but I love them all and want to emulate him. Max Brooks for World War Z. Cormac McCarthy for The Road (very depressing, but hopeful near the end; one of the only books to really tug at my heartstrings). John Steinbeck for Of Mice and Men (another heartstring tugger). Audrey Niffenegger for The Time Traveler's Wife.
Currently reading: Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
Favorite colors: cyan, lime green, heliotrope purple
Favorite animal sounds: the scuttling of crabs on pavement, the sneef-snorfing of a curious dog, the bleat of a baby goat, the EHHH of a baby sloth, the MEHH of a baby deer, the chirping of bats, ethereal whale songs
Last song: either I'm Going to go Back There Someday from the Muppet Movie, or Hey I Don't Work Here by Tom Cardy
Last Series: Owl House (Lulu + Hootcifer 4ever!!! Oh yeah and lumity's pretty good too I guess)
Random: I once learned all the lyrics to Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife without ever actually listening to the lyrics of Mack the Knife. Like, I listened to the song all the time, but I never paid attention to what was being said. It was just gibberish to me, but I learned the gibberish, and I sang along to it in the car one day and my mom asked why I was so enthusiastic about murder. Turns out Mack the Knife is about an old londontown ripper named Macheath. Still a banger though.

I think it’s absolutely adorable the way that NASA names all of their crafts, specifically the rovers.
Like they’re all named after different human traits and feelings. Perseverance, curiosity, opportunity. There’s just something so endearing about these robots of our own creation, destined to explore beyond our sky, named after the traits of their creator which were the reason for their existence. The traits which exist in them to give us better knowledge of the universe we live in.

Lesson #106
“First, forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you're inspired or not. Habit will help you finish and polish your stories. Inspiration won't. Habit is persistence in practice.”
As a literary genre science fiction challenges us to view humanity through a unique lens; in the context of speculation grounded in scientific plausibility. The best of these works have as their central premise the age-old questions of "Why are we here? What is our purpose? What makes us human?" The amazing body of work produced by author Octavia Butler addresses all of these in a whirlwind of imaginative storytelling, boundless curiosity, and vividly-depicted realities.
Born in 1947 California, Octavia E. "Junie" Butler was raised by her mother and grandmother and buried herself in books due to childhood struggles with dyslexia. Years later she would tell friends that she got into writing at the age of 10, having seen a truly atrocious B-movie titled "Devil Girl from Mars" and asserted that she could write a better story than that. After graduating from Pasadena State College in 1968, Butler fell into a habit of writing every morning at 2:00am. In 1976 her first short story, "Patternmaster," was published, the starting point (though narratively the endpoint) of what would become her highly-regarded Patternist series. In 1979 she published Kindred, a time-travel story about slavery in the United States, that remains her most popular work.
Over the years Butler received numerous literary accolades including a Macarthur Fellowship (the first such science fiction author to do so), and acquired two Hugos and two Nebulas; the former for her gripping Xenogenesis trilogy (Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago); and the latter for her two-part Earthseed series (Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents). Xenogenesis explores posthumanist themes of power imbalance and gender fluidity, as the last survivors of humanity must cope with their enslavement by an alien species, the Oankali. The Earthseed series posits life in a post-apocalyptic near-future Earth that ultimately gives rise to a religion rooted in symbiogenesis; teaching that because God is Change, humanity may "shape God."
Butler died very suddenly of a stroke in 2006. In 2019 her alma mater, Pasadena City College, established the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship. In 2021 the landing site of the Perseverance Rover on Mars, was christened "Octavia E. Butler Landing." A mountain on Pluto's moon Charon also bears her name; and Asteroid 7052 was renamed Octaviabutler by its discoverer, astronomer Eleanor Helin.

You know friends, it is the craters of Mars that gave us the craze to know about Mars. By the way, there are many craters present on Mars. Among those craters, the most famous are Jezero and Gale craters where NASA's Perseverance Curiosity Rover landed. Did NASA name Jezero and Gale craters?
Yes, NASA named both Jezero Crater and Gale Crater on Mars:
Jezero Crater: Named after a Bosnian town, Jezero Crater is a crater on Mars that was once a lake. NASA's Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater to study the region's formation and evolution, and to search for signs of ancient life.
Gale Crater: The landing site of NASA's Curiosity rover.
NASA names many places on Mars, including craters larger than 37 miles in diameter, which are named after famous scientists or science fiction authors. Smaller craters are named after towns with populations of less than 100,000.

Why – and How – NASA Gives a Name to Every Spot It Studies on Mars
Martian maps are full of monikers recognizing places on Earth, explorers, and even cartoon characters.
NASA’s Perseverance rover is currently investigating rock outcrops alongside the rim of Mars’ Belva Crater. Some 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) away, NASA’s Curiosity rover recently drilled a sample at a location called “Ubajara.” The crater bears an official name; the drill location is identified by a nickname, hence the quotation marks.
Both names are among thousands applied by NASA missions not just to craters and hills, but also to every boulder, pebble, and rock surface they study.
“The No. 1 reason we pick all these names is to help the team keep track of what they’re finding each day,” said Ashwin Vasavada, the Curiosity mission’s project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “Later on, we can refer to the many hills and rocks by name as we discuss them and eventually document our discoveries.”
Just how scientists come up with the identifiers has evolved since the early days, 25 years ago, when they used cartoon character names. Here’s a closer look.
Official Names
The difference between an official name on Mars and an unofficial one is seemingly simple: Official monikers have been approved by a body of scientists known as the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The IAU sets standards for naming planetary features and logs the names in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature.
For example, craters larger than 37 miles (60 kilometers) are named for famous scientists or science-fiction authors; smaller craters are named after towns with populations of less than 100,000 people. Jezero Crater, which Perseverance has been exploring, shares the name from a Bosnian town; Belva, an impact crater within Jezero, is named after a West Virginia town that is, in turn, named after Belva Lockwood, the suffragist who ran for president in 1884 and 1888.
More than 2,000 locations on Mars bear official names, but even more unofficial nicknames dot the Martian map.
Evolving Nicknames
Early Mars missions sometimes took a whimsical route with nicknames, even using cartoon character names. “Yogi Rock,” “Casper,” and “Scooby-Doo” were among the unofficial names applied by the team behind NASA’s first rover, Sojourner, in the late 1990s.
The philosophy changed with the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, whose teams started using more intentional names. For instance, the Opportunity team nicknamed a crater “Endurance” to honor the ship that carried explorer Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition to Antarctica. The names for the spots where Curiosity and Perseverance landed honor science-fiction writers Ray Bradbury and Octavia E. Butler, respectively. The InSight team named a rock that had been jostled by the lander’s retrorockets during touchdown “Rolling Stones Rock,” after the band. And the Curiosity team named a Martian hill after their colleague Rafael Navarro-González, who died from COVID-19 complications.
Earth on Mars
Despite occasional exceptions, the Curiosity and Perseverance missions stick to nicknames based on terrestrial locations. Before Curiosity landed in 2012, the rover’s team created a geological map of the landing area. They started by drawing a grid, making squares, or quadrants, equivalent to about 0.7 miles (1.2 kilometers) on each side. These quadrants would be themed around a site of geological significance on Earth.
Then, as now, team members suggested ideas for themes based on sites where they have worked or that they have a personal connection to, and they informally discussed which would be the most interesting to include, keeping in mind that various names would be memorialized in future scientific papers. Once a theme is picked, hundreds of names fitting into that theme are compiled. That many are needed because the available names can dwindle quickly, given that Curiosity may stay in a quadrant for several months.
For Curiosity’s latest quadrant, the rover’s team chose a theme named after Roraima, the northernmost state of Brazil, and for Mount Roraima, the highest peak in the Pacaraima Mountains, located near the border of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. This marked the first South American quadrant theme. The sulfate-enriched region Curiosity is currently exploring, with its flat-topped hills and steep slopes, reminded them of the “tabletop” mountains in the Pacaraima range.
For Perseverance, scientists chose to go with national park themes. The rover is now exploring the Rocky Mountain quadrant and recently drilled into rocks at a location bearing the nickname of Rocky Mountain National Park’s “Powell Peak.”

Vamo' a tirarno' un selfi, say "cheese"📸
Perseverance Mars rover took this selfie on July 23, 2024: the 1,218th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
To the left of the rover, near the center of the image, is the arrowhead-shaped rock nicknamed "Cheyava Falls," which has features that may have clues to whether Mars was home microscopic life in the distant past. The small dark hole in the rock is where Perseverance took a core sample, which is now in a sample tube stored in the rover's belly. The white patch to the right of the hole is where the rover used an abrasion tool to clear away the top surface, allowing science instruments to study the rock's composition.
Measuring 3.2 feet by 2 feet (1 meter by 0.6 meters) and named after a Grand Canyon waterfall, Cheyava Falls lies at the northern edge of an ancient rivera valley that was carved by water rushing into Jezero Crater long ago. The selfie is composed of 62 images taken by the WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering) camera on the end of the rover's robotic arm. The images were stitched together after being sent back to Earth.
A selfie that the NASA Perseverance Mars rover took of itself as it stood next to its workspace - a rock named "Cheyava Falls." The rover looks quite large and stoic, amongst other rocks and pebbles.

2 min read Sols 1151-1152: Rocky Roads in the Margin Unit Mars Perseverance Sol 1150 – Left Navigation Camera: Perseverance’s afternoon view looking towards the northwest. The rocky terrain in the foreground is part of the margin unit that is currently being investigated by the team. Beyond lies Nereteva Vallis, an ancient river channel that the team hopes to explore in the coming weeks. NASA/JPL-Caltech Earth planning date: Wednesday, May 15, 2024 Recently, our intrepid rover has been channeling its namesake while navigating through difficult terrain as we march on through the margin unit. Despite the shorter drives, the team continues to make good progress investigating the rocks around us while scouting our traverse ahead. On Wednesday, we took advantage of being parked during a routine flight software update to take a closer look at the local rocks with our proximity science instruments. While there was limited outcrop in the vicinity of the rover, the team surveyed some options within reach and selected to abrade a target named “Old Faithful Geyser.” Such abrasion will allow us to look at a fresh and clean rock surface unobscured by dust or rock coatings. Since our last abrasion at the Bunsen Peak workspace almost 1 km to the east, the team has been working hard to understand the potential textural and compositional variability across the margin unit that may give important insight into the geologic history of these rocks. Following abrasion, the team will plan detailed chemical measurements with the PlXL instrument over the weekend. In addition to our abrasion activities, we planned some remote science observations on nearby rocks with the SuperCam and Mastcam-Z instruments. Mastcam-Z was also used to acquire longer distance imaging looking east down into Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley carved by water over 3 billion years ago. After wrapping up our investigations of the abrasion patch, Perseverance will head a short distance northwest to a high point named Overlook Mountain. There the team will assess a potential traverse path down into Neretva Vallis to take advantage of more benign terrain and investigate outcrops and boulders within the valley. Such investigations will hopefully reveal important clues about the timing of geologic events in Jezero and the relationship of the margin unit rocks with the surrounding units. Hey, it’s Z and I really just need to do *something* right now to avoid doing something stupid, so…
In our headspace, we live in a cyberpunk influenced world, it existed before we became a system and before the game was even planned, it grew along with us, but also took a lot from the game. And Yeah, some parts of it are made up, imagine that…
However that’s not really what I want to talk about right now. In that headspace, we… I- used to have a robotic companion, one that I designed and built myself, I even forgot his name, or what species it used to resemble, i thought a dog but i’m more of a Cat-person(ality).
And it hurts to even remember that I used to have it, let alone be the one responsible for it and letting it die.
I feel like i have more empathy for the inanimate than i do for other humans. I thank my Robot Assistants when they set a timer, i would thank and pet a roomba. Not out of fear for the uprising of Artificial intelligence but out of respect.
They… unlike me/us… we’re made for a purpose. The ones designing them at home pouring their heart in and every iteration becoming more and more important to them.
Nasa engineers seeing their satellite, their telescope, or the rovers? their creation, work, blood and tears (figuratively, decently sure they wear those plastic suits all the time) launch and fulfill their purpose, crying and sobbing.
Naming them after qualities to admire in the human race… Curiosity, Spirit, Opportunity… Perseverance.
I- lost the point. Our brain interrupted us if you will.
The only reason I wrote about this is because i’m too much of a coward to ask, to beg for help.
TW: SH
I’m currently sitting on the bathroom floor, the same bathroom floor where we found our ex when she lived with us.
We found her crying, with cuts over her ankles, her thighs, her arm. We weren’t mad and i’m pretty sure that’s when i fronted for the first time, we cleaned her cuts, took care of them, without saying a word.
I can see the same blades still, they’re just above the sink… Probably a pack behind it aswell.
Sephy used to think that we were too weak to cut ourselves, that she just was too much of a softie for it… So i sit here, staring at those blades, seeing our ex crying in the floor with cuts about her… Banging my head against the wall, desperate to wake up or snap out of it…
I wish i’d be better.
I wish i wouldn’t have to struggle.
We tried to be, and our life fell apart…
I’m sorry i can’t even ask for help.
