I was just thinking about musical quotes it would be funny to attribute to Hugo and remembered the lyrics 'certain as the eagle flies/we are not alone'
didn't napoleon III use the eagle as a prominent symbol? I don't think this is a good verse
EDIT: he did, according to a website called napoleon.org, Idk how good this website is but it looks like a legit place to gather napoleon info. I guess.

what do you make of connor roy’s fixation on napoleon? (his new mexico ranch being named austerlitz, trying to buy his severed penis). there’s the obvious comparison to be made that they’re both exiled individuals — there may not be enough details in the show to analyse, but it is somewhat intriguing.
the penis gag is p straightforwardly psychosexual imo—he's literally trying to buy a phallus, like the way middlge-aged men stereotypically will buy like a sports car when they're feeling insecure in their masculinity. this is continuous with how the other characters perceive him 'buying love' and with the way that connor is the only one besides maybe logan who's clear-sighted about how libidinal economies collapse into financial ones. usury and onanism are both "the spilling of good seed" = a singular economy and hence the signification of virility and masculinity being entirely reducible to monetary transaction. logan finds this crass and his other children lie to themselves that it's not what's going on because they prefer to buy into the myth of other social values being 'higher' or untainted by money. so connor is the only one of the bunch who would 1. buy an imperialist penis and 2. brag about it.
more generally the napoleon fixation telegraphs connor's very simplistic understanding of power and politics as games played on the whims of a few great men of genius, and of imperial power-mongering as a means to personal gratification, amuseument, and actualisation. the napoleonic years were characterised by a surge in veneration for a fabricated sort of franco-roman politico-ethnic identity, which appeals to connor as well because it's congruent with his own idealisation of 'ancient masculinity' and appeals to classicism. napoleonica is popular in certain forms of very shallow cultural engagement with historical study, where the glorification of conquest and an abstract notion of strength are more the point than any sort of analysis or problematisation of events. connor does probably also identify with the exile aspect of the napoleon narrative, but this may be just as much about his sense that waystar is in cultural decline as it is about his exclusion from the family and from the succession battle.

would connor and tom actually work as a couple?
Got this a while ago (sorry my inbox is. a mess.) but I HAVE been thinking about it kind of obsessively ever since so I'm gonna answer it now. Here's how I think it would go:
They move to Connor's New Mexico ranch and bake bread and (badly) ride horses and both think of themselves as much better ranchers than they actually are. The ranch is decked out in Napoleonica and Ancient Roman artifacts. They live in romantic bliss for a while, throwing big romantic gestures at each other. Tom slowly starts to go batty like Jack Nicholson in the Shining because he doesn't have any subordinates to punch-bag and he never gets to wear a suit anymore and despite what he says about sheep farming or whatever he's always been a pretty ambitious career-oriented guy. Connor tells Tom he wants to run for President and Tom KNOWS this is not a good idea but he's thisclose to putting an axe through the front door for fun and he needs a project so he tells Connor to go for it and makes himself Connor's campaign manager. Tom becomes obsessed with winning despite Connor's batshit policy platform (which they end up having several fights about because Tom wants him to change it to something moderately palatable to the public). He engages in several strategies of dubious ethics and legality to get some of Connor's key opponents to drop out until he actually has half a shot in the Republican primary. He's going up against Mencken. He fucks the debate so bad that Tom decides to run a smear campaign against Mencken only to discover that they've spent all their money. (Connor's funds only came from Waystar stock dividends and Tom hasn't been working). They are Flat Broke. Tom leaves in the middle of the night and moves back in with his parents in Minnesota. Connor drops out of the race.
Tom gets a job doing accounting for a local business that he fucking hates and gets a mediocre apartment that he also hates. One day Connor shows up at his mediocre apartment and tells Tom that he misses him and he still loves him etc and then he proposes right there and Tom is so blown away by the gesture that he accepts without considering whether this is actually a good idea. They will get married at Lake Como (Minnesota edition). Connor starts spending all of the money Tom is earning at his mediocre job because he has no idea how to live as middle-class and it puts strain on the relationship. GoJo buys Waystar (which kind of comes as a surprise because neither of them knows what the fuck is going on ever) and suddenly Connor has 3 billion dollars and they aren't "poor" anymore so they never address the strain on the relationship. They move back to New York and buy Logan's apartment from Marcia and Connor asks Kendall to give Tom a job so Tom has "something to do". Kendall and Roman make Tom COO because they need a new one now. Long hours late nights etc Tom ends up having affairs with both Ken and Roman (separately). Connor has no idea because he's too busy sitting at home trying (and failing) to learn how to carve marble so he can make a life-size statue of Napoleon. Tom feels so guilty about it he tries to throw himself in the Hudson but he jumps from a place way too low to cause any injury at all. He gets fished out and they call Connor because Connor is his emergency contact and Tom tells him he slipped but Connor knows better (although he doesn't know why). He decides to try and carve a life-size statue of him and Tom instead to unveil at the wedding.
They get married at Lake Como (Italy edition) and leave for their honeymoon on a small boat. The boat hits a rock and capsizes and they both drown. Their bodies wash up on the Italian coast clinging to each other. All three Roy siblings forget to go to their joint funeral

Napoleon wall!
A wall dedicated to “Napoleonica” at Sir John Soane’s Museum in London. Despite the war between England and France during the Napoleonic years, Napoleon had many admirers in England. One of them was Sir John Soane. His museum has over 50 publications related to Napoleon, which he collected.
Tumblr media
Notably, the painting on the left side of the wall is the earliest seen portrait of Napoleon in England which accurately captured his likeness. The portrait is from 1797. The museum also houses a piece of Napoleon’s hair, and used to hold his pistol, but someone stole it in 1969. The empty case in the middle is where the pistol used to be.
Tumblr media
Soane admired the Parisian architecture of Napoleon’s reign. He preferred it to the “laissez faire” attitude to public building in London. He visited Paris in 1814 and this is the map of the city he bought while he was there.

It's impossible to be more weak and more degraded
Two weeks before their marriage, Josephine apparently accused Napoleon of being in a relationship with her for utilitarian reasons, and he took umbrage. At first, he addresses her as "vous" but switches to "tu."
Je me suis couché bien fâché.
Toi cependant, mio dolce amor, tu as bien reposé ?
---
I left you with a painful feeling. I went to bed very angry. It seemed to me that the esteem which is due to my character ought to remove from your thought the last which agitated you yesterday evening. If it prevailed in your mind, you would be very unfair, Madam, and I very unhappy!
So you thought that I did not love you for you!!! For whom, then? Ah! Madam, have you really thought this! Could such a low feeling be conceived in such a pure soul? I am still astonished, however, less so than the feeling which, when I woke up, brought me back to your feet without rancor and without will. Certainly, it is impossible to be weaker and more degraded. What is your strange power, incomparable Josephine? One of your thoughts poisons my life, tears my soul with the most opposing resolutions, but a stronger feeling, a less sensitive mood binds me, brings me back, and leads me again like a guilty one. I really feel that if we have arguments, I should challenge my heart, my conscience: you seduced them, they are always for you.
However, you, mio dolce amor, have you rested well? Have you even thought of me twice!! I give you three kisses: one on your heart, one on your mouth, one on your eyes.

What sparked your interest in Napoleon's Marshals and their era?
hi @clove-pinks!! sorry for answering this so late🥺 tumblr ate my previous reply lmao
i was first exposed to the napoleonic era in tumblr a few years ago but i left tumblr soon after and that kinda fizzled away. I stumbled upon napoleonica again once i came back to tumblr and around the same time the new napoleon movie trailer dropped ...
so that re-sparked (is that even a word??) the history nerd in me and i started doing some amateur research on the marshalate since the movie didn't feature them. I was like WOW this is all soo deliciously interesting!! ✨ like napoleon has always been an interesting figure to me but the people around his orbit, especially the marshals, were equally fascinating. I love reading about their petty squabbles with each other tbh it makes me love them more (they're such drama queens 🤭). Lannes became my fav though because the more i read about his no-nonsense, dare to love-and-hate attitude, his temperament and military prowess the more he really drew me in.
He and Nappy were also besties and the chinese fandom really shipped them too (lol) so that got me sucked in. Around the same time, i discovered the napoleonic tumblr fandom here aaaand the rest is history :'D i'm learning soooo much i love it. tl;dr: I guess i can thank the movie? other than that it suucked💀 that's my super condensed version of how I got interested in this era/the marshals. If anyone bothered to read this, i admire you <3

For the fic meme: 1., 3., 4.?
Fic Writer’s Ask Meme
1. What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again?
Historical RPF! I have been in an RPF-adjacent fandom before but the fandom was very strongly about consensus fanon revolving around fantastical/sci fi personas in a roleplay world
I’ve touched on the idea a few times about the idea of historical RPF not being about the actual people but being about the persona that has been portrayed through academia, media and legacy, and these personas being drastically contradictory. There’s a quote here about Napoleon’s marshals that I’m in love with-
“… many of Napoleon's senior officers have become characters of folklore, if not downright fiction. His marshals, especially, have been so bedaubed by careless writers' ink that the true personalities of some of them remain almost unknown.” — Swords Around A Throne, John R. Elting
And honestly the fandoms I enjoy the most are the ones that by nature of the original “media” do not have a set interpretation or characterisation of very evocative characters, so people are forced to create their own interpretations. I think it’s neat, and historical RPF seems to fall into that very neatly!
2. What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer?
Interestingly I’d say that the learning-about-myself-as-a-writer mostly came from experiments with training an AI model on my writing - you can compare the poems here ( Select Statement, A Poem About Grief, A Poem About Dysphoria] and probably contrast them with the Apocalypse Quartet which I mostly wrote years ago (one got published in a newsletter lel), and you can see that it’s an interesting cracked mirror where I or CadLLM has a sense of halting, faltering melancholy that cares about spoken rhythm
And that’s something I also care about in fic writing! But to be able to draw these connections through the funhouse mirror is fascinating to me.
In terms of pure fic writing, I need to do more actual planning when it comes to fics lol.
4. What piece of media inspired you the most?
In Napoleonica, well Waterloo (1970) and the Epic History Marshal video kicked off the whole “oh no I love these dead Frenchmen” thing, and A. G. Macdonnell’s Napoleon and his Marshals, while not perfect research and also a bit early 1900s British, is just now a cozy comfort read
And the podcast Age of Napoleon is so good
Buuuuut as a sudden shift I’m just gonna shout out the surreal fantasy novella The Night-Bird’s Feather that I read on the plane and broke my brain and heart
Thank you for the ask!! I am going to chew on the prompt for a bit because hmmmmm tasty

Tutto perfettamente conservato e restaurato.

What do you think each of the kids are fundamentally motivated by? Obviously they’re all motivated by their father’s approval but Kendall & Shiv (for example) display an actual drive for power Roman lacks. Roman is in turn motivated by familial belonging & affection that Kendall is somewhat motivated by but not really. Not sure what Connor is motivated by but he seems like a (relatively) chill guy.
that's so funny. i think connor is fucking insane. the thing about connor is like, yeah he knows logan thinks he's a loser and would never in a million years give him the company, so he doesn't even bother trying for it, but in every other possible way he has 0 chill and legiterally sees himself as some kind of be-toga'd greek warrior wielding an ak and a boar-hunting spear in one hand and napoleon's beef-jerkied cock in the other. he lives on a ranch in the american west because he thought he could manifest destiny his way into logan's heart but then he named it after a piece of napoleonica because he doesn't understand political signifiers and also no one comes to visit him so he has to be boy besties with his loser ass fertiliser neighbour and wheedle willa into keeping him company. his political platform is antisemitism and believing that cum and money are the same thing, which is why he needs to preserve both and use them only in an appropriately productive manner, except he has no kids and literally throws away millions on a terrible play to continue buying willa's attention even though he thinks theatre is like, culturally degenerate. he's literally running for president because daddy wouldn't hand him an empire and he thinks he can take the reins of a different one, and also he's doing that with a shitlib dc think-tanker he offered the state department to when he was supposed to be ass kissing for waystar. at any given moment he's like 5 seconds from going beast mode and he also can't bear to euthanise a dying dog and his father decided he had no value as a kid and now he financially contracts his girlfriend but has to pretend she's anything other than a courtesan. by the way he used to have a ponytail and drop acid in the desert, he owns 30,000 acres of wilderness, and he would rather see his dead dad cryogenically frozen and techno-futuristically resurrected than buried wearing a kilt.
sorry i thought too hard about connor roy and entered a fugue state. anyway, to be reductive, kendall wants to become logan, but more well-liked. the heir with the flair. shiv wants to become logan, but morally superior. what if a good person ran waystar. roman wants to be loved by logan, and uses the business as a means to that end. you and me up in a little pod above the city, fucking startups and shitting on pension funds. connor wants to be noticed by logan but it's too late for that so he'll settle for prowling around his empty apartment talking to his ghost. i don't need love it's like a superpower.
