Ghost Story thoughts
“Butters cleared his throat. “We could ask—” “No,” Murphy and I said at the same time, and continued speaking over each other. “The day I ask for that bastard’s help will be the day I—” “—told you before, over and over, that just because he’s reasonable doesn’t mean he’s—” “—a murderer and a drug dealer and a pimp, and just because Chicago’s corrupt government can’t put him away doesn’t mean—” “—you were smarter than that,” Murphy finished. Butters lifted his hands mildly. “Okay, okay. I was on board at no. No going to Marcone for help.” He paused and looked around the room as if he’d never seen it before. “Because that would be . . . unprecedented.”
Okay first of all this is the funniest scene in the book so far and I’ve laughed out loud listening to this. Pure comedy. *chef’s kiss*
But second: can someone please explain to me why we (by that I mean Harry) are still hung up on the “Marcone is The Worst TM” stance? I mean sure he is guilty of all listed accusations, but... he’s what I would call a “season 1 villain”. He’s a Peter Hale. He’s a Lea. At book 13 Harry should really get over himself lol After what kind of people he did go for help and worked together with. Surely Marcone isn’t even in the same ballpark of unpleasantness as Lara or Mab or idk a dozen other players. And I’m with Butters on this one it’s not like it would be unprecedented even.
Anyway, I think it’s funny how allergic Harry is to the guy.

RANT #1 ── NARUTO
If you hate fandom rants/Naruto rants this isn't for you, I'm here to complain about things I witness within the fandom spaces.
I was never a big fan of canon. Of course I love the series, but I i was more drawn to the Fanfictions. The fanfiction writers were really talented and I loved ─ still do ─ reading about my favorite characters. I love seeing art concepts with them and how they would have developed if they had a actual writer involved in the manga.
Therefore, it really gets me every single time, when a someone comes down a fan's comment section, of a fanfic, headcanon or a art, and starts yapping about how these characters wouldn't do that because in canon they-
Shut up? Who asked?
Has everyone lost their minds these past 5 years? The fandom never used to be like this. We were divided, but there was a line we didn't cross. We had our corners, our sub-fandoms and we felt safe there.
Now?
Now you can't even do that, because going out of canon, or having a different opinion about the kunoichi, is illegal?
The fan wars went from solely trash talking the ships to personally attacking each other? Are you out of your minds?
I can't see a single good Ino comment without having a idiot pop out of nowhere, asking stupid questions like "Ino has stans?"
No you dipshits, I and half a million other people are mere flobberworms.
In addition, I have come to resent some certain part of Sakura/Sasuke's fandom. Particularly SasuSaku stans from Twitter. I don't really take Twitter users seriously, but sometimes their overall injudicious “statements” really makes me roll my eyes. I don't even know how they became like that because i remember them being so chill with us Ino stans back in 2019, but now they only know how to constantly demean Ino and every other kunoichi.
You don't make allies that way, your favorite character is already controversial as it is, you're only making people hate you because of that. Calling Sai, Sasuke 2.0 and Ino a second Sakura completely unprovoked is... stop antagonising us? Then you have the audacity to play the victims in this whole ordeal... are you kidding me? 😭
Fandom is in shambles.

The Boruto Designs for the Rookie 9 Make No Sense
(Note: I'm not mentioning the blank period designs because that's a post all on it's own.)
A lot of people have complained about the designs of Naruto's generation in Boruto and I can't blame them(I actually agree with most of the criticisms made), but the number one problem I have with them I haven't found voiced. That problem is that they have no rhyme or reason behind them.
I don't think that Naruto was the pinnacle of character design or fashion in anime or anything, but I did like it for one big reason. All of the designs made sense for the characters. To me all of the Naruto character designs come across as in-character because, not only do they fit the personalities of the characters, the changes in the designs(specifically between Part 1 and Shippuden) feel like the natural progression of their designs.
The designs fall into one of two categories: more mature versions of their last designs(for the characters that have changed during the time-skip outside of getting more mature) and significant changes(for the characters who did change during the time-skip, usually in response to the Sasuke Retrieval arc).
The more mature ones include Naruto(he got longer pants, a new headband, and shoes, and started wearing black), Hinata(she lost the fur, got more color and new shoes, and grew her hair), Shino(got more jackets and color), Shikamaru(continued to look more like a chunin), Ino(lost most of the bandages and arm things, and got elbow and knee protection), TenTen(getting longer sleeves and new shoes, and simplifying her color pallet), Rock Lee(got a chunin vest and lost his headband), and, I'd argue, Neji(swapped the color beige for white, got longer sleeves and a skirt, and lost all of the bandages). Every aspect of their designs can be chalked up to Kishimoto's art style simplifying or adjustments that make the characters look more mature or protected. When you put their old and new designs next to each other, they're the natural progression of their last outfit(and a beautiful example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"). Hell, if you know the characters well enough, you can probably imagine their thought process while they were out shopping(Hinata being embarrassed to still wear fur lining as a chunin, Shikamaru being tired of fighting to get his chunin vest over his jacket, etc.).
The significant changes match the characters who most needed a jump in practicality and probably went through character arcs related to taking their career more seriously. Sakura's outfit in Part 1 was cute but it was fashion over function. In Shippuden, she kept her hair short to avoid it being grabbed again, shortened her skirt for better mobility, changed her color pallet to look more mature, and got boots(with a heel, but it's low enough to be passable), elbow pads, and gloves for better protection. She's planning to seriously help Naruto find Sasuke and fight off the Akatsuki and her outfit reflects that. Sasuke has a very different outfit in Shippuden to reflect both his drastically different fighting style and his connection to Orochimaru. Kiba(changing into a more protective leather outfit) and Choji(wearing straight up armor and growing his hair out to better match his teammates) also fall under here and it's most likely in response to nearly dying on the Sasuke retrieval mission.
I'm not going over them, but the other members of the cast(if they even got a new look) also follow this trend.
The Boruto designs break this trend and give us worse designs because of it. At least that's the case for the rookie nine. Outside of the rookie nine, the trend continues and any complaints I have come down to personal preference. This time, their designs fall into three categories: salvageable, time moves forward and their clothes move back, and what the fuck?
The salvageable ones are Naruto and Ino. I can understand giving Naruto more black and shortening his hair to make him look older, I just think it could've been better and needs a second draft. Ino is fine just plain(something made worse by her being the most fashionista-like member of the Konoha 12). I'd say it also needs a second draft, but it doesn't. The anime just needs to start using her design in the Boruto manga(I know it's kind of hard to see since we don't get any panels showing it off, but it looks good from what I can tell).
The time moves forward and their clothes move back ones I have an easy to guess problem with. Kiba and Choji's outfits resemble their Part 1 designs much more than their Shippuden designs. Kiba lost the leather and Choji lost the armor despite both of them still being active shinobi. Instead of progressing, they regressed for some reason. Choji also cut his hair shorter. If they really wanted to give him a different haircut(because they insist on much of the cast having different hair), why not tie his hair into a ponytail to better match his teammates?
(I'm gonna give Sakura her own section since I have a lot to say.)
Remember when I explained how Sakura's more practical outfit in Shippuden denoted character growth? Well, that all went out the window. First, I have two nitpicks that I think add to the problem, but would probably be fine otherwise. 1. She's now wearing heels that not only remind me more of Tsunade than herself, but they also look bad for working in a hospital, let alone going on missions. 2. She chose to start parting her hair differently because... of reasons. This was literally the first thing I noticed about her design. I know this sounds super minor, but changes like these do impact character design and recognizability. However, the main problem is how many awkward call backs there are to her first design. The attaching part of her top is curved, the tail of her top(I don't know what else to call it) falls to her knees again, the Chinese elements of her top, and the white lining. In some ways, her design is actually worse. Not only is she wearing loose looking heels, but she's also wearing tight-fitting, non elastic pants. Why doesn't she dress like a ninja anymore??? What possible reason could there be for any of this??? I'd also like to bring your attention to her wearing make-up and jewelry. I like hyper-feminine characters. I especially like hyper-feminine characters that are also badasses. I don't think it's good character design to add hyper-feminine elements to the design of a character that has an entire moment dedicated to how their insecurity and resulting focus on their ability to live up to female expectations distracts them from their job and goals.
The what the fuck designs I have the most problems with. I'll do my best to keep my complaints to a reasonable length because I could do a full rant on all of them.
Shino is the easiest to explain. He lost the layers of jackets associated with his clan, he completely changed his hair, and he replaced his sunglasses with a weird thing around his head(I don't know what to call it). At first I was gonna say he more resembles his Part 1 design, but it doesn't resemble any of his designs. He looks like an entirely different character and I have no idea why Kishimoto changed him so much, let alone Shino's motivation in-story. Did they think he looked more like a teacher this way?
I don't even know what to say for Shikamaru. I can only assume that they said "We should give him a goatee like his dad" and then they gave up. He's wearing a black jumpsuit with a beige-ish green-ish jacket and brown gloves. I couldn't tell you why and I doubt Kishimoto could either. Why are his colors completely different from all his other designs? Why is he suddenly interested in wearing jumpsuits every day? Why is he wearing a necklace with a circle hanging from it(it's too big to be a wedding ring and Temari isn't wearing one(or any ring for that matter))? Why is he wearing gloves if he never goes on missions?
Technically, Hinata has three designs(one for the epilogue, one for the anime, and one for the Boruto manga), but all of my complaints are for the one used in the anime so that's what I'm gonna talk about. First, why is her design so busy? The art style used for the Naruto series has been getting progressively simple throughout its run time, so why does her design have so many unnecessary elements? Her hooded sweater is lined, she has three layers, her outfit consists of five different colors, and there's a little thing hanging off of her sweater. I know these all sound minor, but none of the other adults get this detailed. If anything, the others have designs that are too simple. The only exception, kind of, is Sasuke, but Sasuke is always covering his layers with a plain black cloak. Also, keep in mind, Hinata only has this problem with her anime design, her other designs are much more simple. Wouldn't it make more sense for the anime to use one of the simpler and better looking designs? Second, was there any thought put into her design elements? Her design looks so different from her Shippuden one that I feel like it would be a waste of time to list those differences. Just look at the two, they look completely different. If I had to guess, the only thought that went into her design was "how do we make Hinata look like a mom?" Which is a shame, because they should've been asking "how do we make Hinata look like an older Hinata?"
Last, we have Sasuke. Where do I even begin with Sasuke? Why is he suddenly wearing what looks like a button-up shirt and vest into battle? Why is there so much detail in his design if it's all gonna be covered by a cloak anyways? Why does he have two belts? Why is his hair brushed downwards? But, most importantly, why doesn't he look like Sasuke? It's not like the Shino situation where he looks so different he might as well be a different character, I can tell it's Sasuke, but he doesn't dress like he used to at all. He's the one character that it would've made sense to dress him like a more mature version of his Part 1 outfit and then they chose the worst characters for that instead. He doesn't even resemble his parents or Itachi at all. He doesn't resemble his clan at all. Nothing's really "wrong" with the design. It's not infuriatingly impractical or ugly and it only needs a few tweaks at worst. But it's probably one of my, if not my number one, least favorite Boruto design. It doesn't look anything like the character it's for and there's no in-story reason why that is.

So, here I have Nara from the EU data center on the left, and a clone of her that I made on NA. The tails are different because i've been thinking about it for a while, and I'm not particularly thrilled with the OG one I have for her. So I picked a different one for the NA clone.
But I cannot decide wich one I like the most ;-;
I want her to look the same on both data centers because at the end of the day she is the same character. And I want it to keep being like this, but I don't know with which one I want to stay...
This will require me buying a fantasia, I know (i'll save up somehow, maybe if I get some excess after I open the emergency comms, idk), but I just want to know which one is her canon look, and I cannot decide ;-;
I'm super indecisive, send help pls ;-;

Hello, Rid 💕💕
You dropped so many bombs that there's no way for me not to come and ramble in your inbox again.
First of all, it's honestly a big turn off for me when I see unhealthy jealousy and possessiveness in a story too. I understand that jealousy is a human emotion that you can't help but feel sometimes, but when characters (or real life people for that matter) use that as an excuse to either be unhealthily possessive or a downright asshole, that's when it really becomes too much for me. And this goes for over the top protectivenese as well. I just think there's a right time and place for that and not every problem has to be solved with violence.
That's actually one of the many things I think you do so well in cmi. Like for example in that scene at the club where Seokjin's friend is bothering OC and instead of letting his anger get the best of him, Jungkook considers what would be best for OC 🥺🥺🥺 I think that's so much more admirable than lashing out with no thought. And the way they protect each other by looking out for each other and caring in subtle ways as well. Every time OC defends Jungkook in front of her parents and stands by him too 🥺🥺🥺 That being said, people do need their ass beat sometimes and that's probably when JK's muscles and OC's fierceness come in handy lmao.
Also a Valentines day drabble for my favourite couple??? That sounds so lovely I'm literally 🥺🥺🥺 irl at the thought of that. I have no ideas about what they would get for each other though, I am very much not creative and romantic when it comes to these kinds of things. As you can tell, I share my love through slightly incoherent rants lmao. All I know is that I would love to see them before the angst. And you say cmi7 next week??? I'm even happier that I have free time now. I'll be ready with tissues whenever you're ready to post it, Rid.
And lastly, I don't even know what to say about you mentioning that you're writing another cocky Jungkook. Your Jungkook stories will one day be the death of me, I swear. Looking forward to screaming about that one too one day.
I usually don't really ramble this much irl, but you make me so comfortable and there's so much to say about your stories that I can't help it. Thank you for always listening 💞💞💞
ivi !! lmfao yes, i apologise for the 💣💣💣 they were super random today 🤣
i agreeee. in all honesty, i used to like the drama around jealousy, too, and smut based on it is something i still enjoy if done right hahaha but i've learned, through fics and personal experience, that it's genuinely a nasty feeling. i think it's lovelier when person A comforts person B rather than provoking them (unless they're being playful or have a reason, which we'll see in c&f i guess :')). so i get where you're coming from.
and AHHH yes! that's something i really love about the cmi couple, too... like, jk isn't a very jealous person in general; he prioritises other emotions. and as for oc, we already know how she deals with all that (e.g. through nara), so... ugh yeah i miss them so much <3 (and yes... yes, one day, they will need their muscles/fierceness hehehe)
omg yeeeee, i'm gonna try and write this drabble! it's gonna be a smol thing, but yesh, just another potential day in their lives 💕 and hopefully a sweet treat before the angst.. :') i'm super excited.. happy you are, too 🥺 the cocky jk.... no comment 🤣
ahhh omg ofc !! i'm glad you think of this blog as a safe space to ramble, i always enjoy your messages 💕 thank you for always talking to me as well, ivi 🤍

Something’s not right in Konoha
I’ve had this in my mind for a while now, but after episode 170, this just has to be brought up:
Why does Konoha send children on dangerous missions? I get and wholly support the catch-the-cat -kind of missions that genins got during the Naruto series, but what about all the life threatening stuff? In Kakashi’s childhood it was unavoidable; there was a war and a shortage of shinobi. In Naruto’s childhood things were calmer, but there was always a threath of war. But now? The alliance holds strong and while there’s trouble every now and then, do the children really need to fight like this? I mean, I’d get it if there was really no other options, but what about the mothers? How about sending them to the dangerous missions instead? I can accept that Sakura’s no longer in the field ‘cause she’s needed at the hospital, but Hinata? Ino? Karui? Freaking Temari, whose wind style is supposed to be second only to Naruto?
Ino has her flower shop and she helps out with intelligence gathering from time to time, but Hinata, Karui and, I repeat, Temari, seem to be housewives. Housewives! Now, there’d be nothing wrong with that if they themselves weren’t shinobi, but the fact if that they are, war veterans even, yet what do these war veterans do? Take care of the house while their 12 year olds risk their lives at their jobs!
I can understand them taking time off during pregnancy (duh), as well as early infancy to take care of the baby and let their bodies recover from the pregnancies, but after that? What stops them from going back to work instead of sending little kids to battle?
Two things:
One is that the kids need to gather experience in case there ever will be tougher times ahead. I get that, but shouldn’t they gather it at a little slower, a little safer, pace, especially when there are resources for it?
The other thing is that it’s simply a Japanese thing, so the authors probably don’t think it’s weird. As in, in Japan it’s very common for a woman to leave the workforce once she gets married, not to mention after she gets kids, so the writers probably see it as a logical thing to do in Naruto, too. The fact that all the important, non-married kunoichi (Ten Ten, Shizune, Hanabi, Kurotsuchi etc.) work, while the married ones don’t, supports this theory, and that’s just fucked up.
It’s like “Hey let’s put these kids in terrible danger! Huh? Put their trained, war veteran mothers in the field instead of them? We can’t! They’re married women, that’s unnatural!”
Like I said, it’s fucked up.

Dragon Warrior/Quest ramblings/collective review
I rant about the Dragon Quest franchise a lot.
Two of my video game pet peeves are when people laude the original Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest as ground breaking (it’s not, see Wizardy/Ultima), or the great grandfather of JRPGs (it’s not, see Hydlide/Dragon Slayer/Fantasian/) I’m generally not a fan of silent protagonists. I rarely identify enough with a character to feel like I’m “in” the game, so I prefer to be playing the role of a character with some kind of dialogue and a personality. Every dragon quest (that I’ve played) has a silent protagonist. That said, I do have some love for the series. I’ve suddenly found myself interested in giving Dragon Quest XI a spin, but instead I went back to Dragon Warrior IV. I remembered liking it as a kid and I’m happy to say I’ve been having as much fun playing it now as I remember having back then. Here are my thoughts on the dragon quest games separated into the ones I’ve finished and the ones I haven’t (mainline only).
Games I’ve Finished
Dragon Quest: This is grinding the game.
Strategy is almost nonexistent in the battle system outside of “Grind XP to LVL UP/Gold to buy better equipment”. You have 1 character and you never fight more than 1 enemy, so all fights are one-on-one. There isn’t any equipment with special traits or functions (just better Attack/Defense). You get access to a total of 6 spells in the game: Heal Heal More Heal Most Hurt Hurt More Hurt Most (these last 3 are usually a waste of MP) The plot is linear (except for potentially at the very end of the game). At least there’s a decent amount of exploration. Worse than Final fantasy I and Phantasy Star I by far, but to be fair, Enix did better with Dragon Quest II, which beat both of these competitors to the punch. Dragon Quest II: So much better than the original.
The grind is mediated by choices that matter in regards to equipment and combat. Also, you have an actual party this time (of 3), Also, Also, you can fight multiple enemies at the same time. Dragon Quest II added a much wider variety of spells (buff, debuff, and elemental damage spells); Equipment that had special functions when used as an item in combat (e.g. the Lightning Staff can cast whoosh), and a smidge more plot. Many people say more grinding is required in II than in the original, but I would argue that Dragon Quest I is nothing but grinding whereas Dragon Quest II breaks up the monotony with a dose of strategy. Comparable to Final Fantasy I. Far worse than Phantasy Star I. Dragon Quest V: Decent.
Also the first game originating on the Super Famicom (although we didn’t get an official English translation till the DS remake)
Allows for a party of 3 (4 in the DS remake). Considered groundbreaking by many for it’s monster recruitment system but it wasn’t the first game to have one by any means (Megami Tensei beat it by 5 years and Wizardry IV by 4). The game is divided into sections based on time periods as you grow from a kid to a teen to an adult, which is a cool way of pacing the games content, and gives you a little more perspective on the setting than you typically get in a Dragon Quest game. Characters are mostly boring outside of one (or two) of the love interests. Did I mention this game has love interests? I think I would have liked it better if there was only one, because it punched me in the heart for not picking the one it leads up to as the primary love interest (who also happens to be the canon one). Has really frustrating setting/plot-gender dynamics with two characters late in the game who I won’t name because spoilers.
Games I’ve Played but haven’t finished
Dragon Quest III: My least favorite game in the series (out of the ones I’ve played).
This time you have a protagonist and you can hire adventures to join you on your quest. They are all nobody characters. Their personalities are assigned at random, and (from what I can tell) only effect their growth. There’s no fucking dialogue with them (which is something I expected after DQ II). Personalities and seeds are fucking annoying, because both of them are random, have huge differences in their effects, and their effects make a huge difference in character capabilities, so it makes me want to spend hours saving/reloading until I get the effects I want. Fuck this game for introducing seeds to the series which appeared in many Dragon Quest games after this (thankfully I haven’t run into personalities again yet). Often lauded for having the “groundbreaking” option of changing character classes/jobs. Yes this came out before Final Fantasy III (Japan), but I would like to make the following points: - Final Fantasy I let you pick your character classes (which came out beforehand) - Final Fantasy III had a class change system you could actually make use of throughout the game (unlike DQ III where you need to get about halfway through the game first) - The original Wizardry came out 7 years earlier and also had a much more accessible class change system than DQ III I played very little of Dragon Quest III (I dropped it before even getting to my 2nd town). Two great thing about this games: It’s the first in the series to give you the option of playing as a woman, and I heard it’s the game that introduced the casino/mini games to the franchise. Dragon Quest IV: This game is Great! Also, Unlike the first three games in the series, Dragon Quest IV might actually be groundbreaking. You ever play Wild Arms I, II, or III? Did you enjoy playing through the prologues that introduce your early party members? Well Dragon Quest IV does a similar thing: The game is divided into chapters. Each chapter has a different protagonist. In their chapter you play them as silent protagonist, but when you encounter them later in the game they have dialogue. This does a lot to develop much of the cast, because you can see how people react to/talk with them and later on you can see how they engage with the player character (who you’re actually introduced to last). The cast is great and falls into a mix of both very old school and very uncommon tropes for a JRPG: You have an aging knight who goes on a mission to rescue children and then goes on a journey to find more about the ominous forces behind their kidnappers (Ragnar). Then there’s a princess who wants to go on an adventure against her fathers wishes so she kicks a hole in the wall of her room and jumps out of the castle (Alena); she’s joined by a young priest (Cristo) and an elderly mage (Brey) employed by her father, who give up on bringing her home and instead ask to travel with her to help her out. Next you have a merchant who wants to raise enough money to buy his own storefront (Taloon). After that you play a Fortune Teller (Nara) who travels with her dancer sister (Mara) on a quest to avenge the death of their father (an alchemist who was murdered by his apprentice).  Each chapter ends on a climax related to motivations/goals of its lead character and each chapter shows more of the world/gives out more info on what is going on behind the scenes. While you actively control the primary characters of a chapter other characters are either controlled completely by AI (in chapters I-IV), or loosely follow a tactical strategy you select (chapter V). I’ve been getting on fine with it, but this might be a deal breaker for some. The music is better than any of the Dragon Quest games I’ve finished (and what I’ve heard from any of the ones I’ve played, but not finished). A remake of this game has an interesting flaw: they cut all the party chart dialogue from the foreign language versions of the DS version; so if you don’t know Japanese, you’ll probably miss out on a lot of character interaction with that version. (I heard this had something to do with concerns that the game wouldn’t make enough sales to cover translation costs of the party chart [which was reputedly two thirds of the game’s script]). Dragon Quest VI Honestly I’ve barely played this one. You have actual characters for party members (a big plus in my book). I’ve heard there’s a job system as well. Plot/setting seem decently interesting on first glance. I might come back to this one later. Dragon Quest VIII I got about halfway through this one.
They included a character-specific skill tree system which is cool, except that there are objectively best routes to take for some (possibly all?) characters and these best routes are not even close to obvious from the outset. It introduced a pretty fun crafting system.
There’s  a decent cast of characters, but they don’t have quite enough going on for my tastes (my fave is Yangus). Plot has an interesting premise, but feels very barebones, and the environments/towns/npcs aren’t very interesting (maybe about as good as DQV, but worse than IV).
This game gets lauded for the 3D models of characters/enemies, but honestly I’ve never been a fan of the character designs of Dragon Quest (especially the monsters), so I feel pretty “meh” about it outside of being able to see your party members in combat (for I think the first time in the series), which is very nice. The music is very ambient a lot of the time. It does a good job of fitting melancholy moments, but doesn’t do such a great job of building excitement during battles and high-tension events. Dragon Quest IX This game feels a lot like Dragon Quest III.
You don’t have any actual characters, you just recruit them and use them in battle (no meaningful intraparty dialogue, character development, etc.) I think I played around 10-20 hours before dropping it.
Final Thoughts
Dragon Quest games vary from game to game in terms of gameplay mechanics, but they vary a great deal more when it comes to characters.
If you like having a lot of control over your party composition and don’t care about having characters with personality, you might like Dragon Quest III, V, or IX.
If you want a party comprised of characters who interact, have personalities, and might even develop over time, you might like Dragon Quest IV, or (sort of) VIII (I haven’t played much of VI, or any of VII or XI, but I heard they also fall into this camp). If you want to play an old school, 8-Bit JRPG that launched a spectacular franchise, might have actually been ground-breaking for its time, and is still fun to play today, check out the original Phantasy Star. . . . . . . (at least, for me it’s still fun to this day) [notes: - edited some typos, and mistakes most notably regarding the Hurt series of spells in Dragon Quest I - Revised some word choices - Added a comment about being able to see your party in combat in Dragon Quest VIII]

"When is Chaeun gonna be back?" questioned Ahrin as she was eating a bowl of salad, along with Haejin and Eunhee. The leader looked towards her phone, stating that it was nearly midnight.
"Not so soon," muttered Eunhee as she quickly stuffed a spoonful of cabbage on her mouth as she looked away.
Eunhee was worried about her roommate the whole day, worried if anything would happen to her.
Out of the 7 of them, ever since the mission that they did in the club, Chaeun, Yeonji, Nara and Hyunji would get calls from the company to settle a case regarding a cult.
They would always send them in pairs, but today, Chaeun was called to do the mission alone, which means something serious must have happened to have her to carry out the mission.
"I'm worried," Haejun mumbled as she looked towards the leader, earning a sigh from her.
"We're not the only ones. I received a text from Jinyoung saying one of them is having sleeping problems," informed Eunhee as she shook her head slightly.
Cheeky and small smiles were seen by the girls, knowing which member she was talking about.
"That bad?" commented Ahrin as she sounded amused.
"Yup," muttered Eunhee as she was going towards the fridge. At that moment, the sound of their doorbell was being heard and the girls turned toward the door, an eyebrow raised.
The doorbell didn't ring once, it rang multiple times.
"No one ordered anything right?" questioned Haejin and Eunhee quickly put down her bowl of salad, going towards the kitchen counter to open a drawer that she rarely opens and her hands were already armed with a gun.
No one ever rings the Bloody Roses house, even their neighbors were afraid of them.
The girls had a rumor that was going around the area that they are assassins, until one day the 7 girls were the ones who saved the residential area from thieves, rapists, and unwelcome people.
From that day onwards, their neighbors opened up to them, and later they found out that they were working with the neighborhood police closely.
Just to be safe, Eunhee goes to the main security camera to see someone unexpected as she quickly puts the gun down.
"Who is it?" mumbled Ahrin and Eunhee turned towards her.
"Jackson Wang."
Tumblr media
A deep sigh of relief came from Chaeun as soon as she turned the corner of the road, to see the familiar route.
She can't believe that she has been out for a day and now she finally arrives home.
Chaeun already has a few things she wants to do as soon as she arrives home, which is to take out her one tight suit, having a long warm bath, then changing into her comfortable pajamas, and asking Eunhee, her roommate, to cook a warm soup and finally, calling Jackson Wang.
It's already been 2 and a half months, coming to 3 months - and ever since the day where Chaeun opened up to him, both of them were inseparable.
When Jackson has no schedule with Got7, there will be schedules with Team Wang.
Cheeky enough, Jackson's team, which is Team Wang , contacted Chaeun's company to request Chaeun to be Team Wang's bodyguard, mainly Jackson .
One of the contracts stated that Chaeun will be following Jackson to other countries for his schedules.
Without hesitation, Chaeun agreed since her schedule isn't so busy and her missions mostly began during night time.
Both of them were having the time of their lives, mainly Jackson.
It was if he was in cloud nine but he had to hide it. His crush is with him 24/7, his crush is his work-mate and his crush is also his personal bodyguard.
Jackson didn't feel exhausted at all, with his flight schedules being packed, going to London for photoshoots, next is going to LA, and flying to Korea and Hong Kong back and forth.
He didn't feel his energy was draining out because his bodyguard was there and she would always entertain him with his constant whining, rambling, and rants.
During the flight trips, it was the only chance for him to get to know Chaeun personally.
He finds out about her childhood, Chaeun telling him about her own trainee life in the company and her current missions that she is about to embark on.
What made him amazed was, Chaeun and the other girls know how to speak mandarin and English.
Hence, two of them would talk in a mixed language of mandarin, English and Korean. But it was mostly Korean and English.
Jackson wasn't the only one who was attracted to her.
Chaeun was attracted to him too, but she was professional enough to mask it.
She was smiling, going through the moments she had with Jackson as her smile suddenly faded, remembering the conversation she had with Jackson on the phone 2 days before she had to go on a mission, and sadly it wasn't a joyful conversation.
"What? You're going alone? Chaeun-ah, you told me they never sent the girls alone and let me quote what you have said ' if the company sends one of us alone that means the situation is—
"Bad. I know, Jackson. We both know very well."
"Yeah, and I absolutely will not allow my bodyguard to go alone! I'm going to complain to your executives about this!"
"It's just a day, Jackson."
"What did you just say?! A day?!"
"I will be back, Jackson. I promise."
"What if you are not coming back? What if.... Oh—Fuck."
That was it.
Jackson ended the call and Chaeun could hear how unhappy he was and his curse word too.
Somehow for the first time, Chaeun felt devastated and that was when she finally realized how much Jackson meant to her.
Shaking her thoughts away, she finally drove the car into the garage.
Chaeun cleared her thoughts that mostly filled with her and Jackson before stepping out of her car.
Her hands twisted the doorknob and as soon as she took a step into the house, she was being engulfed into a tight hug, and to realize who it was.
"Can't breath," muttered Chaeun and Eunhee pulled away as she kissed the roommates' cheeks.
"We are all worried about you." Ahrin walked out from the kitchen with 2 glasses of energy drink, handing it towards her.
Grabbing one of the glass, the girls noticed bruises on her knuckles, earning soft smiles from them.
"Saw the pictures that were sent by Lee. Proud of you, kiddo." Haejin winked as she ruffled Chaeun's hair, winking back towards Haejin as she drank her glass of energy drink.
Chaeun eyed another glass that was being held by Ahrin.
"I'm fine with just a glass—
"It's not for you," commented Ahrin, earning a slow nod from Chaeun.
"Then who is it for?" questioned Chaeun and Ahrin gestured towards the pool.
Following where the leader was looking at, Chaeun finally realized what or whom Ahrin was looking at.
Chaeun frowns deeply as she turned towards the girls, as she quickly lowers her voice.
"What is he doing here?" mumbled Chaeun as she stood in front of Ahrin, wanting the leader to block her view.
"He's been here for 2 hours," stated Eunhee with a smile.
"He has some things he wanted to discuss with you, personally ," Haejin commented with a wink and Chaeun sighs as she wordlessly grabs the glass from the leader, looking towards where he was.
Tumblr media
Knowing she will arrive sooner or later, Jackson decided to bring his notebook and a few pens to distract himself as the time passed by.
Sitting on the comfortable sofa, his sight was only to the pool.
It feels like he could go insane just by the thought of her not coming back.
He remembered the conversation he had with her, and it didn't even make him feel better, instead, it made him feel worse with him accidentally cursing at her and him ending the call in nervousness because he nearly confessed those 3 words to her.
Jackson quickly put down his pen, his eyes turned towards his notebook, staring at a sentence he stopped at.
' Are we friends or are we more? '
He turned away, sighing roughly as he began running his hands through his hair in frustration.
That was the exact question he was asking himself ever since the door opens to reveal Chaeun's roommates.
He still remembered the conversation he had with the other girls.
"You're not supposed to be here Jackson," said Eunhee as she gazed at the man, who looked like he never slept for 2 days.
"I know. But it drives me insane knowing exactly what she is doing now."
"You're not the only one," added Haejin as she looked at him with a worried look.
"She is going to be fine, Jackson. Don't worry. This isn't the first time—
"Exactly! What if something happens this time? What if she is being captured? What if she is being stabbed? What if she is being drugged? What if—she's gone? I can't afford to lose her, Ahrin. I love her!"
The girls looked towards each other with a slight smile as they tried not to let out a giggle but Haejin failed as she let one out, earning a slight frown from Jackson.
It was obvious that he looked annoyed, knowing he was serious about it.
"It's not funny. I'm being—
"Jackson. Chaeun is on the way back home right now. Here, look." Eunhee grinned as she showed her phone towards him, and as soon as his eyes set on the phone, his cheeks started to turn red, realizing what he had said previously.
Her phone shows a GPS tracker of Chaeun's car making her way back. The tracker wasn't lying because he himself took the route here with his manager.
Jackson looked towards the girls as they were smirking towards him, knowing he just confessed his feelings.
"I assume you are just daydreaming,"
Jackson looked towards the voice as his eyes slightly widened to see the one he has been waiting for about 3 hours.
His eyes went towards what she was wearing, knowing she really did come back from the mission. He quickly stood up, his eyes still staring onto her face as he went towards her.
"I brought your favorite energy drink," Chaeun gestured to him the glass towards him, but his eyes fell towards her knuckles.
Roughly grabbing the drink from her hands, he placed the glass on the table then turning back towards her.
"I told you I'll be back," commented Chaeun as she looked at him, at the same time noticing his tired-looking face.
His puppy eyes turned droopy, noticing his dark circles.
Chaeun sighs as she looks away.
"You should go home, Jackson. You looked like you have been awake for 2 days, and I'll be dead if your company knows you are here," muttered Chaeun as her eyes were downcast while she took out her gloves.
"You're asking me to go home, after spending a day - or 2 - thinking if my girl— my bodyguard is dead?" whispered Jackson, his eyes slightly widen after hearing the words coming from her mouth.
Hearing the word dead makes her frown deeply, her head snapped towards him.
She knows that Jackson was being serious, seeing his expression that was somehow mixed with anger and frustration.
If this conversation goes on, she knows it will end quite badly, and Chaeun doesn't like to fight with him, because she likes him.
With a sigh, Chaeun grabbed his arm, slightly tugging him to go in and maybe slowly persuading him to go home.
"C'mon Jackson. I'll drive you—
" No! I don't want to go home!"
Chaeun froze as soon as she heard his outburst, slowly turning towards him. For the first time, she gets to see how Jackson looked when he is mad.
Slowly taking her hands away from his arm, she looked at him in the eye, noticing his eyes started turning glossier.
"Do you know how worried I was, Chaeun ?! I can't believe you have the audacity to ask me to go home - seeing I am here and waited for you till you came back and those were the first words I got ?! I can't believe you! " yelled Jackson as he was fuming in anger, but mostly frustration.
Here we go again .
Chaeun sighs, knowing this will end quite badly.
"Jackson—
"I'm not done yet!" Jackson cuts her off and Chaeun closed her eyes in annoyance, trying her best not to argue with him, knowing how he is like.
"There is a reason why I came all the way here - I won't come here if I had no reason!"
"And what's your reason, Mr Wang ?" Chaeun asked in amusement, as she folded her arms staring at the Hong Kong man who now looked like a little boy. He looked confused and just lost. The look on his face was hilarious.
Jackson's eyes widened in surprise, as he was finding his words.
Chaeun chuckled in amusement as she took a step forward towards him.
"Look, I'm sorry okay? I know you are worried and all, and I get it. I really get it because I have been in your shoes before, Jacks. But you have to trust me regarding this. I can't afford to argue with you every time I—
Her eyes widened, feeling her lips being smooch and she knew what position she was in, as she closed her eyes.
Without having second thoughts, her hands automatically cupped his cheeks, returning his out-of-nowhere kiss.
It was Jackson's turn to feel her lips leaning in, and his eyes were widened, at the same time he can't help but let out a smile in the middle of the kiss.
It was also perfect timing for Chaeun to pull away, her eyes definitely locked with his.
"I have been dying to say this. I love you, Chaeun-ah. I really do. That's why I was frustrated and just - mad , and I was scared because the thought of losing you makes me insane." confessed Jackson, from the bottom of his heart.
Hearing his words makes Chaeun's heart swoon, earning an automatic smile from her.
Chaeun leans towards him, embracing him with a tight hug and also rubbing his back to soothe him.
"I'm here, Seunnie . I'm here and .." Chaeun trailed off as she pulled away, leaning towards his cheek, giving him a kiss on the cheeks.
"I love you too." mumbled Chaeun with a smile.
She was about to take a step back when both of Jackson's arms were holding onto her waist, pulling her towards him.
"So, that means I can call you 'baby' and I can spend the night here right?" mumbled Jackson and Chaeun could feel her cheeks turning pink in embarrassment, earning a giggle from him.
"Whatever makes you happy, baby ." teased Chaeun, before Jackson gave her another kiss, this time it was a long one.

CORRUPTUS
[directory]
graven images.
[source] [triggers]
If you really believe in something, it can be yours.
That's how we've been conditioned to think. Mostly, I suppose it's a coping mechanism to keep us from eating the rich. We all think we'll be rich someday if we just want it hard enough. How long has it been since there was a good, old-fashioned culling of the wealthy elite?
That probably wasn't a good way to start this blog post... I'm more than a little tired, but fuck it. I'm leaving it.
"Corruptus".
That was the subject of an email I received before my ISP dropped me. My phone turned into a brick the same day. Hell, I think it was the same precise moment, though it's difficult to know for sure since I only tried it after my laptop couldn't connect.
"Corruptus"... I'd never heard the word before, and to be honest I'm not exactly sure it IS a word at all. It could be Latin. It sounds like Latin. I haven't been able to look it up, and this is the first time I'm getting on the web since my unexpected removal from the grid.
I tried to sign on at the local library, by the way. My card was revoked... unpaid late fees for books I'd never read, much less checked out. Mostly borderline fetish material and self-help books for various mental illnesses. The apparently quite detailed tome on weapons of mass destruction seemed to be of the most concern for the librarian.
I hung around the library for maybe a half an hour, until someone left a computer logged in and unguarded. When I went to check my email, to tweet a complaint about what happened, those accounts were gone, as well. Honestly, I was a pretty huge dumbass for expecting them to be there.
It wasn't long before I noticed the computer's rightful user pointing me out at the front desk. I guess she wasn't a fan of the direct approach. I was out the door before anyone could cause a real fuss.
It's been over two years since I left Mowgli's Palace and never looked back.
The original blog post has come and gone so much... across so many different sites... that I can barely even remember the first place I tried to host it. If I'd known how far this would go, I don't know if I would've been able to hack out that clumsy, flawed account of what happened. The pressure would've been too great, and I suppose there's a certain level of comfort in the idea no one will actually see or care about your work.
It seems like a lot of sites removed the information, either upon direct request from Disney... or on their own in fear of reprisal. I know a really popular YouTuber who pulled readings of my posts from his channel. The rumor was that someone threatened to sue him, some supposed "author" of the "story". Bullshit. I know first-hand that he took it down in a bout of pants-shitting fear when he realized Disney's connection to his partner company.
I tried to keep up my "After Abandoned" blog for a while. I don't know how many people out there saw my notes on Room Zero, Club 22, and so on. They're still around if you look... at least at the time of this writing.
Yes, "Club 22" exists. No, it's not a typo of "Club 33". I later learned, from the same contact, that there's an 11 as well, and supposedly the debauchery only grows as the numbers get lower. I heard of a "Club 00", but I can't confirm that as clearly as I can with the previous contact. I also don't know if it has any connection to the "Room" of a similar name.
Yes, the door probably said "Characters" or "Cast Members" instead of "Mascots". I know, I know, I hear you all. Thank you so much for that. I'm sure your memory is crystal clear in moments of abject terror, right?
Overall, I'm glad that my words have spread so far and wide... but the down side is that so few of you are taking this seriously. I can't stress this enough... Treasure Island? Real. The Utilidors? Real. Just because you can't substantiate the rest doesn't mean it's "a cool story". Instead of picking apart the inaccuracies and making games about how cool it would be to have been in my position, maybe people can start taking this seriously and digging into what's going on.
Maybe?
I don't know. I don't want this to be a rant. I want to stay focused and make sure I post exactly what I wanted to make public. All of the stress... the stalkers, the phone calls, the broken windows... I know that's all supposed to keep me off track. They want me confused, scared, and most of all they want me quiet.
There's a team of men and women in suits that I've seen at random times. Here and there. I call them "The Focus Group" because they pop up with clipboards and pens, taking notes about everything I do. They all have the same outfits, the same thick-rimmed nerd glasses, the same red pens that just scream "we're judging you".
The first time I noticed them, they were following me through the Mall. I looped and turned, trying to be SURE they were following me... and there they were, every step of the way. Days later, I spotted them again in the laundromat window across from my new apartment.
I chased one down, once. The tubbiest one. They stayed silent through the entire chase and even the scuffle that ensued. When I wrenched the clipboard from his hand, I only found page after page of off-kilter, random gibberish coupled with crude Mickey silhouettes. All in the same red ink.
I know it sounds insane, to say that a group of men and women in black are following me and taking nonsense notes, but I think that's the point. I think the idea is that it SHOULD drive me insane, and if it doesn't, you'll still think I'm crazy just for saying it.
It's a no-win situation.
I will forever regret that trip to Emerald Isle, but on the other hand I'll always be grateful to the people who have come forward, anonymously, to share their experiences with me. Whoever mailed me the suggestion box from the resort is basically my hero at this point. To read what I'd written about the place and still brave the journey... wow. I can't imagine how that felt, whoever you may be. You even left the original, corroded lock in the box so I'd know it was legit. To do all of that without even taking a look inside for yourself must've been really hard. Thank you.
If you haven't noticed, I'm treating this post a lot like my "final installment". There's a reason for that. I don't know how long I can keep subverting Disney's attempts at silencing me before some sort of final action is taken. I have no doubt that somewhere, at this very moment, someone is using my identity to commit a crime that would discredit me. That, or the men in white jackets are about to show me a lovely little padded cell. I don't know what's going to come of this, and that's the worst part I suppose. All I know is that it's coming.
So what is "Corruptus"? Well, as I mentioned it was the title of an email I received. One that was presumably deleted along with my account. It was blank, and seemed to exist for the sole purpose of placing an attached text document in my hands.
Too bad for the powers that be... I had already printed it the moment I saw it.
Not much they can do to reverse that, can they?
I should've mentioned... remember that library? I used their copier to run off a few thousand duplicates of that letter. A few hundred are stapled in random places, a few hundred were passed out to random people, and the rest... let's leave those as a little surprise. Have fun trying to stifle THAT, you horrible mouse-fuckers.
Without any more rambling, here's the letter. Word for word. It arrived from a source whose email address I won't disclose... though I assume it's an untraceable dummy account, anyway.

A complete list of suspected CORRUPTUS incidents and reports may be available.
It took a few readings before I could get my head around this. Essentially, if the attached file was to be believed, then the events I had experienced were not part of an isolated incident. The events within Room Zero... the Gascots... they seem like part of a much larger problem.
What is "Corruptus"?
Corruption. I mean, I don't need to run Google Translate for that, even if I felt like I COULD take a break from writing without the risk of someone finding and disconnecting me at any moment.
Corruption of what? Dreams? Ideas? Desires?
I've never been a religious man, but I was dragged to Sunday School more than enough times to know about Golden Calves. False Gods created by man... icons, graven images...
Characters. Mascots.
If you believe in the Bible at all, and I'm not sure I do, especially not after what I've seen... then maybe God wasn't angry because people worshiped other things. Maybe he was afraid. Maybe if enough people believe in something hard enough, there's a chance it will come to be. Since we're naturally flawed beings, that means there's a very good chance such a thing would become corrupted.
If you think about it, Disney's animated films have always had one overriding message.
Clap your hands and believe hard enough, and Tinkerbell will live. When you wish upon a star... anything your heart desires...
People like to say Disney has some connection to Satanism, but I never bought into that. I still don't. I think they've been trying to create that Golden Calf... a God-Idol that everyone believes in... one that everyone loves... It's almost as if any dream or idea that is shared by enough human hearts and minds has a real chance of being born into the world.
The creatures... if any exist beyond what I saw with my own eyes... I think they're the deformed half-starts. Random manifestations of some dark, unquantifiable non-life that seeped into our state of being. They're mistakes of reality. Cosmic abortions.
The Corrupted.
Did everyone in Emerald Isle harbor such a negative impression of Mowgli's palace? How potent was the fear of nuclear war on the day Room Zero became full? If you want to find Gascots and mystery voices, does that search bring about the very thing you're looking for?
How many children have been disappointed, confused, or scarred for life when they saw Mickey without his "head"?
These are questions I'm never going to be able to answer. I don't know if anyone can. Speaking personally, this will probably be the last time I talk to you about Disney and everything I've learned about them. I'm truly sorry for that, especially since there's so much more I could say... unconfirmed rumors, documents and items I received that now seem to be gone forever...
I thought they were just trying to contain that Mickey costume. I thought that's why they went out of their way to keep the public in the dark about so much. Why they coerced and bullied to get their way.
Now I realize I was wrong.
It was this, all along.
They didn't want anything like THIS getting out.
I wish you all good luck, and I know I need the same from you.
Thank you.

I'm here once again to say something that only people with very specific intersecting interests will appreciate but:
hoyoverse sure let Wriothesley have ridiculously talented VA's huh?
I don't know about the CN and KR ones but then for JP you have Mr. hotshot Daisuke Ono, who it has been brought to my attention can sing. And it should not be news, I know, but guys they recorded Monochrome no Kiss?? I'm going to expire??? Don't ask me how many times I have listened to that snippet.
And then on the same day, I find out that Joey Zieja isn't just a very funny guy who voiced Wrio amazingly. He also wrote books? And they are on Audible narrated by him? And they sound like very funny sci-fi that I think I would actually enjoy??
Stop it. The talent. My heart can't take it.

undeniably yours; prt 1
type: prompt >> civilian + shinobi love for day 6 of sasusakufestival characters: sasuke, naruto, kakashi, team 10, hinata, and sakura summary: one of konoha’s strongest and most confident shinobi easily becomes weak and unsure of himself around a certain pink-haired civilian. word count: 2,594 by: gaara-nara
(followed by a part 2 & part 3)
as they made their way through the streets of yet another village, naruto stopped suddenly and leaned down to pick up a rather unusually violet pebble.
sasuke paid no mind and continued his conversation with kakashi until their voices were drowned out by the blonde-haired boy excitedly chattering to himself about how much hinata would love this rock.
“hey, do you mind?” sasuke practically growled out with a very tired yawn. “we were trying to go over the aspects that went well in this mission and what areas could use some improvement but i can’t hear over your gibbering.”
“what is it naruto?” kakashi lazily side-eyed.
immediately upon being asked, the next few minutes were filled with naruto’s voice, ranging from high to low, as it quivered in nervousness and excitement. he was preparing to give hinata this token of his love to her, even managing some remark about how it perfectly captured the color of her eyes and held up the little rock as if the whole land were interested to see.
the other two audibly sighed when naruto started on yet another rant, at this point tripping over his own tongue to keep up with those increasing thoughts of his. sasuke could hear a steady buzz in his own ears over the ridiculous amount of noise coming from the bundle of sunshine (who was practically jumping around now) next to him.
the uchiha passed a knowing smirk at kakashi and they nodded, forming a plan without words. “oh ok, yeah. you can tell us about it once we are back home. speaking of, do you want to stop at the bake—“ at the very mention of naruto’s favorite spot in konoha for sweets, he darted ahead of the other two, focusing now on their cookies no doubt.
when kakashi and sasuke finally caught up, they leaned up against the bakery door to stop and catch their breaths.
they had somehow managed to book through a full forest, the entrance of their own village and down the main road a bit before stopping.
“are their cookies really that good?” kakashi muttered through breaths from behind the ever-present mask.
“not sure, I normally don’t eat sweets.” but the ex-sensei watched as sasuke stretched his arms over his head, breathed in slowly, opened the door up and headed in to the counter anyways.
from the outside, he could see the two lingering at the counter talking to a girl he recognized, their weren’t very many people running around konoha with cotton-candy pink hair, but didn’t really know. he thought about leaving, per usual, seeing as the mission they went on kept him from visiting the centograph for almost a week but decided against it this time and waited on them.
“so, do you come for her then?” kakashi didn’t even miss a beat as the grin crept across his lips, causing the little bit of his face showing to move and visibly crinkle next to his eye.
naruto seemed to find this statement quite amusing and fell back into his rambles about needing to go find hinata. as the blonde made his way in front of them he turned, smiled from ear-to-ear and waved with his usual charm, heading in the general direction of the hyuugas. if sasuke wouldn’t have known better, the boy’s exit seemed a tiny suspicious. the remaining two walked a bit further down the street before they would part ways, when kakashi distinctly recognized the noise of a little paper sack hitting the side of sasuke’s leg. he eyed the pink bag that clearly had something in it and thought for a moment before turning to go his own way.
realizing this might be his only opportunity to confront sasuke, he sighed and turned back to face the uchiha, “i didn’t mean that question for naruto, he has already mentioned her to me before yet you haven’t…” his accusation hung in the air for a moment as they held eye contact and kakashi pointed to the bag only to receive an eye-roll from sasuke, then they both threw up their arms in a salute bye and kept going.
the whole walk back to the uchiha compound was as quiet as arriving and staying there alone was. sasuke remembered the times as a child, before anything had fallen apart and the grief and revenge had clouded his judgment. he sat down on the edge of his bed when he reached his room and remembered his brother, although this one memory proved to be far more painful than anything he had once found worth focusing on.
feeling a growing sickness in his stomach, he rubbed there idly and caught on the back of his hand a light layer of grime. this was of course nothing unusual considering their mission had been to the land of wind and it was a particularly grueling summer there. he smirked at the sensations of a current breeze blowing in through his open window and sat the little pink bag aside. he grabbed a clean t-shirt and boxers, heading to the shower.
even when he had finished washing himself and cleaning his hair, he leaned against the wall as the steaming hot water poured over him. images of a bloody tap to the forehead and a “goodbye” left him exhaling a breath he didn’t realize he had held since his mind wandered to itachi.
since that day he had heard the word “love” in a different way. it had never really appealed to him in the same way it did others but now it had attached every bit of distrust, pain, and hurt with it. because of this, he had been so hesitant about giving naruto the go-ahead when he had earlier that week admitted to sasuke, kakashi, and clearly himself too, to the feelings he had so quietly burned over for hinata.  sasuke knew the risks of the shinobi lifestyle well but his few experiences with the risks of caring for someone else openly, especially loving them, were something he knew he did not want.
it all always ended, his thoughts running to a girl behind a counter and his eyes skimming the room and falling back onto the pink bag. and for him, it ended badly.
he had wondered a while when naruto spoke on his deeper feelings for the byakugan-holding girl but knew naruto had a joyful radiance that could put the sun to shame. his blonde friend could come out of some of the worst situations in his childhood and choose to put others first still and take a chance with being so available to everyone he met, never not making friends in foreign lands or the very streets of his own village.  sasuke knew naruto was this way and understood that if things didn’t work out in the long run with hinata, that the two would probably still remain friends and naruto’s feelings wouldn’t falter or change even then because that was just… who he was. his very nature was both loving and understanding.
as sasuke made his way to his bed, feeling lighter now that he was clean and had comfortable clothes on, he grabbed for the cookies and realized this naruto-stuff didn’t really matter in his case. the uchiha would never be like that and would never allow someone else in.
unlike gaara, the kazekage from the land they had just had their mission in, he knew love wasn’t something he wore on his forehead and unlike many of his friends, wasn’t something he had in his heart. not anymore.
he fell asleep laughing softly at the mere notion that he still even had much of a heart.
.  .  .  .  .  .
she woke up to the sound of footsteps and voices outside of the room. cracking open her eyes reluctantly and letting out a yawn, sakura shuffled her way out of the bed and walked into the hallway toward the bathroom.
she maybe had three hours of sleep at most because ino had invited her over for a sleepover and this meant staying up all night with boy-talk, snacks, and movies. when she looked into the mirror she expected to look more tired than she did but it wasn’t too noticeable so she rinsed her face and brushed her teeth before making her way into the living room.
“so, why are you up so early again?” sakura groaned out as she rubbed her eyes.
she quickly opened them up when she overheard ino snicker and the clearing of a familiar boy’s throat. apparently ino’s other team members and naruto had arrived recently and must have made all the noise that woke her. she noticed the group also included the reclusive uchiha boy of whom she fleetingly glanced at and away from.
“um, sakura…” ino was looking like she might burst into a laughing fit, staring down at sakura’s waist. it was only then that the girl noticed an odd breeze across her front and looked down to see she was standing there in her underwear. her eyes wandered back up and over to sasuke’s face but his expression proved to be unreadable as he turned to look out the window instead and she immediately ran back to the bedroom, mortified.
“you really mean to tell me you couldn’t have maybe said something about them being here when i was in the bathroom!?” sakura turned to her friend as she entered into the bedroom too, still carrying that smug look on her face.
“i didn’t exactly know you would run around in your underwear in the daylight, plus i had no idea that i would get called out for a mission this morning either.”
at the mention of a mission, sakura grimaced. “oh…” she looked down at the floor for some pants, continuing while pulling them on. “are they all going with you?”
“yeah. tsunade had nothing better for naruto or sasuke to do since they were rather eager for missions even if they just arrived back home yesterday afternoon.” they shared a knowing grin and the blonde chattered away while putting things together in her backpack. “ah, you know how they can get. especially uzumaki and his ridiculous stamina and even worse persistence.” ino flung her hand into the air in a very dramatic way and further went on to impersonate the boy. “BUT GRANDMA TSUNADE!!!!”
they both shrieked with laughter, falling back onto the bed, at the sound of a very annoyed naruto in the other room and looked at one another, still giggling but a seriousness touching both their eyes.
sakura thought against it at first but then shoved her thoughts away and pulled her friend into a hug. “be safe, pig.”
“yeah well don’t show your underwear to everyone while i’m gone, forehead.”
“aw, come on Ino. this is seriously such a drag.” they heard shikamaru complain and open the front door. sakura followed ino back into the room to join the others, watching as her friend swatted at her dark-haired teammate affectionately.
“sakura-chan, i’ll be back and expect more of those new cookies too! sasuke actually liked them!” naruto beamed over at his partner and the boy shot him a glare.
“tch. i merely said they were alright.” but as the attention was drawn away from the moment and the others were making their way into the yard, sakura noticed sasuke turn back to glance at her once more before they were all off the porch and heading to the front gates of the village.
she watched them as they left and thought to herself how “alright” was the farthest sasuke had come to actually being nice to her, since that one night forever ago whenever they were younger.
she felt a tiny bit of warmth in her chest at this, thinking back to the night that sasuke chose to leave the village and how she had known his intentions far before any of his fellow ninja did, how he had stopped to explain things to her when he never had to, how he had tried to thank her while his voice cracked and exposed a new side to him, and finally how he had glanced back at her in the same way then as now.  but sakura gritted her teeth and remembered who he was and more importantly… who she was; him practically one of konoha’s greatest and her an insignificant baker who only made an impression due to her hair color.
“gah i need more sleep.” she muttered as she made her way back into ino’s apartment and headed to shower since her mind was too awake to go back to bed now.
.  .  .  .  .  .
trekking through the woods wouldn’t have been so bad if sasuke was alone or even just with naruto and kakashi. (or maybe if he had slept more and spent less time thinking about the small icing-heart on his cookie he got from the bakery when he knew naruto’s had been plain. not that it mattered.)
since no serious needs had come up in quite a few weeks, tsunade had allowed for them to go with team 10 on an escort mission for a higher-up person from the neighboring village. it would be a breeze, he thought. well as long as they managed to stop filling every moment of quiet with unnecessary conversations.
“oh come on, sakura didn’t know you guys would be there.”
“yeah well… do girls normally stay in their underwear when they have sleepovers? we should join next time.” naruto nudged sasuke’s arm at this in a very playful yet innocent way. sasuke realized this we stuff must include him. he looked off in the distance ahead of them though, ignoring any invitation to this conversation. this was really not helpful to the mission.
“yeah you can join them when you aren’t at the hyuuga’s which is never anymore. but back to sakura, i overheard some of the other jonin talking about her the other day on the streets. ino have you been parading her around to other ninja? you know rock lee was all set on her.” shikamaru added in.
“actually no, they just have eyes and can see her which explains why they want to talk about her. hate to break it to them and rock lee though, her thoughts seem to be occupied by some mysterious guy. i tried to get her to spill last night with no such luck.” sasuke had to fight the urge to wonder why his ears had instantly been drawn to the conversation, causing ino’s last few statement to echo throughout his head.
“ah probably some guy who works at the bakery with her,” shikamaru stated with a shrug as he pulled out a cigarette.
“yeah, bakery… sweets… food. when are we stopping for lunch?” choji sheepishly grinned up at the rest of them as his belly growled, causing naruto to whoop for joy and expectantly nod at the others.
“i swear you two have one-track minds,” ino and shikamaru shared an amused look at one another and glanced over at sasuke.
he was still miles away in thought though, wondering who sakura could be harboring feelings for, then wondering why it even mattered. this really wasn’t helpful to the mission.
“uh i am sorta hungry too.” the others looked down the row at him in surprise, then started talking through possible places to stop at on the way. he was thankful his focus was now somewhere else, well… should have been.

Hinata Jumping into the Pain Pit is Weirdly Executed
The Pain Arc is among my favorites, but something’s been bothering me about it; Hinata jumping in to save Naruto before she gets folded by the Deva path. Not the fact that she did it(I think it’s a really nice way for her to overcome her anxiety) or even the scene itself, but the fact that it was her.
To me, Hinata’s role in the arc feels very disconnected. She has no presence at the start of the arc. She doesn’t comfort Naruto after Jiraiya’s death, she certainly has no connections to Pain/Nagato or Konan, she has no relevancy in the question about world peace, and I don’t even remember her making a passing appearance. When Pain attacked, she didn’t take out one of the paths or anything(again I don’t remember her even appearing). Then she suddenly has all of the attention on her as she jumps in, proclaims her love, and gets “killed,” which causes Naruto to flip his shit. Then, she’s back to being near irrelevant. Kakashi carries Naruto back, Sakura hugs him, Hinata makes a brief appearance to show she’s alive, and the arc ends. She doesn’t say anything to him, Naruto isn't especially relieved to see she’s alive, and the confession is never addressed.
Do you see why I think this is a weird decision?
She has one moment of relevancy and then she fucks off until the war arc where she will once again have a brief moment to matter before the epilogue. This decision gets even weirder when you take in the bigger picture. For the scene, Kishimoto needed a liked character with an established relationship with Naruto to futilely jump into save him before getting “killed” by Pain. That character’s “death” would cause Naruto to lose control of the nine-tails, resulting in Naruto meeting Minato and yada yada yada you get the point. (Bonus points if that character jumping in progresses that character’s arc.) Now, I’m not saying Hinata doesn’t meet the criteria, but there were certainly better options. To list a few:
Sakura Haruno was literally right there. She is the primary heroine and love interest of the Naruto franchise. She wasn’t a focus character in the Pain arc, but she was at least present. In early shippuden, it was established that she was insecure about being unable to help Naruto in bigger ways. It was also established that she wanted to help Naruto fight back against the Akatsuki. Moments before the Pain Pit scene, Sakura was shown screaming for Naruto’s help so her having a moment of desperately realizing that someone has to help before turning the tables would’ve been a nice scene. Sakura “dying” would mean that Naruto wasn’t just pushed over the edge by seeing another friend die, but by pretty much losing the last member of the original team 7. I could go on about it being in character for her to do and her saying her choice to step in is selfish would be nice foreshadowing to her later actions in the Five Kage Summit arc and her hugging Naruto at the end of the arc would not only be more impactful but make more sense, but this post is long enough already.
Shikamaru Nara would’ve been a nice segway to becoming Naruto’s right hand man later. He was already one of the most present characters in the arc(helping decode Jiraiya’s code and Naruto moving forward) and it would justify the amount of screen time he’s given in both the arc and the manga. I like Shikamaru as much as the next guy, but it is odd how he’s given disproportionately more character depth and growth than the other tertiary characters despite contributing little to the greater themes of the series and stories of the main characters. Him participating in such a major moment would not only make the prior screen time make more sense but him protecting Naruto specifically could be an alternative start of him choosing to become Naruto’s advisor/assistant. Granted, him jumping in wouldn’t be very “protect the king” or “200 iq” of him, so his decision would have to be justified somehow or lead to some sort of character change.
Iruka Umino would’ve been a gut punch. I’m biased and I love Iruka, but sometimes a story needs to twist the knife and this is literally the arc’s darkest hour. He got a little screen time prior to the attack when he comforted Naruto, Iruka’s death was already teased when the Deva path nearly killed him while he was trying to protect someone, and he appears again at the arc’s finale. Iruka “dying” would, at least temporarily, make Shikamaru telling Naruto about the old generation protecting the new all the more grim. The scene could also be a nice call back to chapter one of the series. I’d also like to add that, while any of Naruto’s friends dying would’ve set him off considering the amount of buildup, him reacting so extremely to Iruka “dying” would’ve been undeniably an in character response and it would’ve added at least a little more weight to him choosing to forgive Nagato.
I think I’ve made my case why, without changing anything outside of who jumps in, at least three other characters would’ve made more sense narratively. So, why Hinata? I have two theories as to why Kishimoto thought he should choose Hinata.
1. Kishimoto originally planned to do something more with her character, but ultimately didn’t. Maybe the editors stepped in, maybe he changed his mind, who knows? Not me. I wasn’t there and even if I was, I’m not fluent in Japanese. This would explain both her stepping in specifically and her actually confessing her feelings, but neither being mentioned or relevant again(save for the one movie). It’s also possible that her encouraging Naruto after Neji’s death was that “something more” but it was just awkwardly executed.
2. Hinata is meant to be thematically relevant in the grand scheme of things.
Remember when I said Hinata didn’t have any relevancy in regards to the larger question about world peace? That wasn’t wholly accurate. To explain why, I have to explain the thematic conflict of the Naruto series very quickly.
The series is packed with commentary on humanity, but the thematic question most relevant to what I’m talking about(and arguably the franchise) is “Is it possible for people to understand each other?” (This is specifically in relation to conflict resolution.) This is why talk no jutsu exists, this is why Naruto and Sasuke’s rivalry is so relevant, and this is why the resolution of Naruto is international alliances rather than systematic change or whatever alternative plot resolution people where expecting. This question is lingering in the background since Part 1, but it’s first vocalized in the Pain arc when Nagato asks Naruto if he thinks world peace is possible(which is a stand in for the thematic question of if he thinks two people understanding each other is possible). Naruto answers that he doesn’t know but he’ll find out then spends the rest of the story doing just that. The Five Kage Summit arc is him finding an answer(only if the anger/hatred which would normally cause conflict is directed at a single target), the War arc is him reevaluating that answer once he sees it fail when put into practice(the infinite tsukuyomi/Obito/Madara), and the Valley of the End/Ending is the presentation of the final conclusion(yes). There’s more to it than that and the discussion of how well the theme was executed and if the conclusion was accurate is still open, but all of that is irrelevant in this discussion.
What does Hinata have to do with this? Simple, Hinata is integral in both Naruto reevaluating his answer in the first place and the conclusion he comes to. Naruto treats a large chunk of the war arc like a personal conflict. To him, it’s less of a world war and more of a “Naruto vs Obito/Tobi/Madara.” Because of that, he’s done whatever he can to shoulder all of the weight of the war. However, Neji dying for his sake was like a personal failure. Naruto, unsurprisingly, began to crumble at that failure(with the help of Obito’s taunts). Hinata snaps him out of it(slaps him out of it?) and reminds him of his ninja way. Specifically, she tells him that his conviction to protect his friends is shared by all of the shinobi there. She tells him that it’s not shared hatred or pain that connects all shinobi, it’s the love they have for their comrades(as cheesy as that might sound). That’s all to say that Kishimoto may have chosen Hinata to enter the Pain Pit to connect her to the theme that she’ll later be an impactful player in forwarding. By having her face off against the antagonist that brings the theme to the forefront, it makes her transition into her later role smoother.
However, I still think the execution was weird and the product we ultimately got leaves something to be desired. This isn’t to say that the Pain arc is ruined by this scene by any means—I wouldn’t blame you for thinking this is a nitpick—but I’m still bothered by it. Hindsight is 20/20, but even without hindsight I think the scene could’ve been better. Kishimoto should’ve either chosen a character other than Hinata to jump in and connect Hinata to the theme in some other way(or use the character she’s replaced by if you want to completely scrap her) or he should’ve given her more time to be present in the Pain arc.

i think what saddens me in this whole bees situation is the horrible proof that you can write a gay man and write him well and still be homophobic. i have great respect for writing and i think you develop a deep and intimate connection to your characters and their thoughts when you write them. to see proof that you can have that beautiful connection and still hold onto beliefs that make you hate a whole group of people for no good reason at all... it horrifies me to be honest
