Hello! New to the X-men fandom, drawn here by Scott Summers (I love your blog so much!) Two questions, if you don't mind:

1. What would you consider essential reads for Scott specifically? There are so many starting points it seems.

2. I did finish Whedon's run of Astonishing X-Men (at the recommendation of reddit) and was wondering if Scott (now?) doesn't need his ruby quartz glasses/visor? Sorry if that's a run-specific question!

The first question is surprisingly difficult, only because Scott's such a staple throughout the entirety of the X-Men. So let me kind of give you a run down of your options.

The 60s comics are really fun, if you want to see where things began. It is very 60s though, and the style may not be to your taste. There's also some period sexism that's not great (though surprisingly less than I expected. Possibly because Jean's meant to be a fairly liberated teen, as opposed to older ladies like Sue Storm or Janet Van Dyne.)

The Claremont Era (Starting with Giant-Sized X-Men, which introduces staples like Storm and Wolverine) is probably what will be the most familiar to folks who became used to the X-Men from other sources, like the cartoons. The Animated Series and X-Men '97 adapt a lot of Claremont era stuff, so it'll be pretty familiar.

It's also soapy and dramatic, and Scott (and Jean) feature very heavily. You'll also meet Rachel. Rachel is fun.

X-Factor's first run is something I'd recommend only after you've gotten into the character more. It's actually really good, IMO, and an amazing deconstruction of how much of a trainwreck the poor guy actually is. It's not always a flattering portrayal though, which is part of what makes it interesting. (It is good though to read the Madelyne stuff for yourself eventually, summaries tend to ignore the aspects that make Scott's side of things a bit more understandable, if not sympathetic.) Baby Cable is here too.

The 90s X-Comics are pretty fun too, like the earlier Claremont era, this is likely what folk are familiar with if they remember the cartoons. Costumes, characters, and so on. Scott is one of a very large cast, but he tends to have some really good arcs here and there. The art takes getting used to it. This is where you'll start seeing adult Cable as a major character. And another AU Summers child, Nate Grey. He's complicated.

the 2000s-2011 era of Comics have a lot of upheaval and events. Scott is still an idealist, but he's been jaded by a lot of events (and will be jaded by more). You'll see him get darker here, but not evil. It's pretty sad though. SO MANY big events though, Scott pulls off a lot of wild shit.

In 2011-2016, we have two Scotts basically. Avengers vs. X-Men is a massively huge event that changes Scott's role for a long time. For our main Scott, the next few years are going to read a lot like whump fic. He's going to suffer, people are going to blame him (unfairly, imo!) for a lot of things, and he'll be treated like a monster at times. That said, there are people who do see the truth and end up even joining him.

But also around this time, through shenanigans (read: Hank McCoy), the timeline is disrupted and the 1960s era Original Five (specifically circa issue #8) are brought to the future. They have their own adventures in lines like All-New X-Men (v1. and v2.), X-Men Blue, and Scott specifically has a solo series early on and then joins up with Kamala Khan's Champions and it's darling.

Eventually older Scott "dies" (it happens in comics). Young Scott continues though. When Young Scott goes to the past again, older Scott comes back (unrelated reasons).

For 2019-2020, there's a short run by Matthew Rosenberg, starting at issue 11 or so. The original team of X-Men is presumed dead (really they're dealing with some multiversal nonsense. Possibly Nate Grey's fault), and a returned Scott starts gathering new X-Men. It's intense, angsty and kind of bleak. This isn't about saving the world anymore, just maybe going out doing what they should.

From 2020-2023, we get a massive, amazing change in direction called the Krakoa arc. Scott's not featured as prominently here (It's Xavier's show), but he's solid in any series that he appears (Adjectiveless X-Men will always have him somewhere. He's very prominent in Teen Cable's book too.) Krakoa is something very different than anything the X-Men series(es) have done before and it's definitely worth reading. Though for my own taste, I like the return to form that comes with...

Our current era is "From the Ashes" and it's not actually a bad place to jump on. Everyone's a little scattered and out of sorts since the fall of Krakoa, but Scott, being who he is, has already pulled his own book together for the kind of mutant-rescuing heroics that he is wont to do.

As to where to start? Honestly, I'd go with whatever seems the most fun to you. Eventually, I think, you'll find yourself branching out and it won't be nearly so confusing. (There are also wikis, podcasts, and annoying pedants like me who like explaining everything.). Fans will often have their favorite special books (Children of the Atom, for example, is probably my favorite version of the O5 origin. It came out in 2001 and has a truly horrifying Jack Winters), and we'll always leap on the opportunity to share those things.

as for 2. I don't know if you read the Giant-Sized finale of Astonishing X-Men, but they do have a scene where Scott's eyes start glowing again and Emma places the visor on him. It's a nice, quietly somber scene.

In current X-continuity, Scott does still need the visor. The inability to control his blasts may have a psychological component but there's also physical brain damage. (In the Krakoa arc, there are mechanisms where he might have repaired said damage, but it actually does come up at some point, and he specifically chooses not to. I hope I can find that page again, because I feel like there's a lot of interesting potential meta in that choice.)

I don't think they ever really revisit why Emma (or Cassandra, possibly) had been able to neutralize Scott's blasts/restore temporary control over them, but I tend to go with the interpretation that a powerful enough telepath could force a bypass with his powers, but it's an incredibly traumatic, potentially damaging, and ultimately temporary solution. Hence, what we see.

For her part, Jean Grey (at least in the modern era) is able to psychically block his powers. And that's always fun. (And sometimes a little kinky!)

Derek Gleeson (Glenn Powell); x Lexi Danes

Kirk's older brother, grew up in Stars Hollow at the same time as Lexi Danes and they knew of each other but weren't close by any means. He joined the military (specifically naval air force) at 18, and ended up crossing paths with Lexi while he was stationed overseas and she was travelling. They lost contact until she returns to Stars Hollow and finds out that Derek is home as well

Garnet Massey (Ruby Rose Turner) & Sapphire Massey (Elle Fanning)

A set of sisters who were raised in the circus. Their parents were trapeze artists and they were raised the same, both aerial artists though Garnet wanted to one day become a ringmaster. The circus was incredibly abusive (and later uncovered to be a cult). Sapphire left the day she turned 18, tracked down her godmother Patty based on very very vague memories, and filed a lawsuit against the circus to get Garnet out of there. They are now both living in Stars Hollow and adapting to life in the real world – though Stars Hollow is really a circus of its own

Mavis Tinsdale (Renee Rapp)

Sherry's much younger but equally high strung sister. Total type A, although she will start to reinvent herself in university. She was an accident baby because they thought her mom could no longer have kids and her parents did not feel like raising another child so she was left with Sherry when she was ten. Thinks if she had just been more perfect, her parents might have kept her.

Max Dorsey (Olivia Scott Welch)

Kirk's eldest sister's eldest daughter. Max Dorsey is a former military brat (has not lived on a base in years though) and the eldest of 10 kids – previously eleven but her twin brother died when they were infants. Her father adores his kids but is usually away and her mother is entirely checked out; a combination of having been too young/immature when she became a parent, grief, and her general personality, so Max has been raising her siblings for her entire life. She would love to move away for university and have her own life but is terrified of what that would mean for her siblings.

Nate Doose (Cody Christian); x Evan Mariano

Taylor Doose's teenage son. Plays hockey, football, and runs track, he is the town's golden boy athlete and all around darling and has been for his entire life. He loves his dad but they are very different and Taylor just doesn’t understand him, the only thing they have in common is a love for history. He does want to make his father proud but doesn't know how, and finds that he relates much more to Luke and has a much easier time talking to him – and when Luke's niece (and nephew, but his eye is on Evan) moves to town, it only makes sense that he offers to show her around and help her settle in.

Sunshine Mariano (McKenna Grace) in Little Miss Sunshine

Now 14 years old, Jess’ little sister. Liz wanted a girl so badly and was very much a stage mom (pageants, figure skating until she couldn’t afford it, music career) but eventually there was a very public shitshow and Liz lost custody. Jess was too young to get custody, her dad (not Jimmy, despite her last name) was AWOL, and she ends up moving to Stars Hollow when she’s around 11. Kind of loses contact with Jess because of it until suddenly Liz is calling and shipping him to Luke

Scarlett Evans (McKenna Grace) in Fearless

Sam's younger sister (Irish twin, in the grade below him), Scarlett was an up and coming country music girl in Tennessee before having to move to Lima. Sweetheart who just loves music and when Rachel Berry invites her to join the Glee club, she's so excited to have her first real friend. Until she realizes that Rachel has no interest in friendship, only control.

Eastlyn Kirby (Sarah Catherine Hook); x Carter Baizen

It is well known that Eastlyn Kirby and Blair Waldorf have been fighting for the crown for their entire lives. As different as could be but equally gorgeous, rich, and powerful. But Chuck Bass has always thrown his name behind Queen Blair and when he learns a secret that could ruin Eastlyn forever, well... he might be willing to use that for Blair's cause. Unless he can get a better deal out of it.

Cousins, the fairy queen and von Rothbart from the Enchanted Lake, trapped by Regina's curse alongside the forest children until Odelia shows up. (shoutout to @occasional-ghost for suggesting Jeff as Rothbart!)

When Sunlight Hits : Nathan Drake x Reader

Summary: After the events of a more-than-fortunate sleeping bag situation, you and Nate play chicken to decide whether or not your twin confessions the night before were in the heat of the moment... or exist even brighter in broad daylight. Warning: None! Just some fluffy quick-fic goodness! Reader is briefly implied to be blonde/redhead/etc. with brown/hazel eyes due to the specific dialogue some unrelated freakazoid wrote. Feel free to disregard.

Your first time. Your first time back. You almost can’t believe it.

You’re wearing a dress. He’s wearing a suit. And the drinks you both hold are only to soften the brutality that follows. For one brief hour, you two find the will to believe you deserve to soften, deserve to meet your worlds intertwined in the middle. Where danger becomes mundane, and where danger is born from the mundane. 

Born in a ballroom in Italy. 

“You havin’ a good time?” Nathan smiles with teeth, grip leveraging up to mindlessly swirl his glass of whiskey. It’s three quarters of the way gone, but that doesn’t near out-do your double drag of lemon drop. Or maybe he’s just better at holding it than you are.

“It’s alright.” You match his grin with your own, blood beating with the drum and twirl of alcohol, heart palpitating to be so close to him. He doesn’t move his arm when your elbows bump on a lean over the balcony. He smells like vanilla sandalwood and aftershave. Overwhelming. Perfect. “A bit disappointed I haven’t bagged any hotties yet.”

He laughs full and open— and your heart takes a breathtaking nosedive. “Well, there’s still time.”

His body leans further over the railing, eyes scanning through the stripes of jade, ruby, sapphire, amethyst, black silk-covered crowd, eagle-eyeing for a win. “Anyone your type?” 

And maybe it’s just the liquor that does it, cheeks flushed and making the whole room spin warm and possible, that makes you spitball a death-defying risk.

“...Sam’s single, isn’t he?” 

You take a half-glance over the rim of your glass on another sip. And Nathan’s eyes bug in some reaction you can’t quite decipher. Your heartbeat thunders for his reply.

“S-Sam?! Are you kidding me?” His mouth falters for a fallen grin, or maybe he’s just swallowing back upchuck. No self-respecting man would give the go-ahead for a friend to jump the bones of his potential crack-head older brother. “Please tell me you're joking.”

“And what if I wasn’t?” 

You trail, slinking up onto a nearby pub table bathed in white linen, ankle crossing over ankle. You play coy so you can ignore the way your hands start to sweat. But the alcohol, the flabbergasted way he looks at you makes it easy to forget.

“Nah… nah, I don’t see it.” 

And Nate leaves it at that before swigging back and emptying the last of his glass. A pathetically reasonless answer. But you need more.

Please.

Oh god please, you need more. 

“Why not?” The next gulp makes your thoughts warp. You’re far from sober, even farther from thirst, but your body does what is necessary for your growing fight or flight. You don’t even know the person who asks with such mystique. 

He says nothing, only tips back his head for the backwash remnants of a drink that no longer exists. 

“What kind of person do you think would be better?” You’re putting your life on the line when you ask it, balancing precarious upon a tightrope as wonderfully garish tulle collects sweat between your chest, between your thighs, beneath your fucking pits. There is no escape from what his presence does to your body, to your barely beating heart. What his answer could possibly incite next. 

“Better? Well, uh…” 

But maybe it doesn’t really matter. 

“Blonde or Brunette?” You swing back to standing when he’s pulled back abash from speech, palms swaying just barely against your laying skirt. You hope he likes the dress you picked. 

You know you do.

“What does that matter?”

“Just curious what you think.”

“Well, brunette would… pair better, I guess.” His reply warbles uncomfortable at the edges, reluctantly sets his glass down when no reason to hold presents itself. And you’d be dumb to not notice the way he eyes your dress— wishing with all your heart that he was eyeing you— sinking into bombastic, glaring hues for example. “I know you like color contrast.”

You hover on closer to him. It’s everything your body chooses without you.

“I–- I don’t know! Whatever you like best is fine, I’m sure.” His breath barely breaches past withholding hysteria. Downstairs: glasses clink, a gentle jazz thrums through the echoing space, rich crimson reds of parted, velvet curtains, satin cloth magnetizing to a triple dozen wealthy socialites’ curves, dips, hips, tricks. 

And yet his eyes are only on you, cloudy over and gorgeous sky, before they pull back once again. Shrugging shoulders do little to hide his timidity. It’s a way you never see him when Sam and Sully are around. It’s the way he is when your heart plucks over his safe, beautiful, gentlemanly visage and fawns. 

“Blue eyes?” And now textile has been added for sight, fingers carefully moving over the soft polyester of his suit, a touch you would never have the courage to give without the booze. The music. The dress. The solitude. “For the contrast?”

“Heh, I guess that makes sense.” His chest stutters for inhale as his warmth meets yours, quirking sideways smiles you want to taste and grin against and give love to. “Whatever you like.” 

You slide your palm across his back, nestle, thumb over where his shoulder blades sit. The places on his body you want to wring the pain out of. He takes a less than steady inhale. Form forced to turn towards it. And his eyes speak such tender shyness into yours.

You love him.

You want to tell him in the places he might actually believe you.

“How about someone sweet? Boy— man— next door type?” His eyes drop bashfully at the closeness, lips still quirking in that petal-soft grin. “Someone who will be good and gentle with me. That’s what I like.”

Your fingers brave farther, farther, farther, and the wool polyester translates into starch cotton and the big band below is playing smooth jazz you’d have to be an idiot to not think is romantic and the liquor bubbles and pounds and twitters through your skin so strong that it dematerializes any pointless barrier.

And you ask:

“What do you think?”

He finally looks up at you. His lips look unbearably soft, and in any and every other instance that you’ve known him, you would’ve near thrown yourself into the sea for even daring to look. But when you look back up, he’s only looking back at yours. 

“That sounds… nice.” — Soft, dreamy, distant. Like he’s a hundred miles away and inside your very soul simultaneously.

And you’re so stupid, so fucking stupid. 

“Do you know anyone like that?” 

And he’s stupid, so fucking stupid.

And so fucking brave. 

“Maybe.”

This time, for the first time, he doesn’t speak coy words he hardly makes coy, doesn’t reach for his empty glass to combat the nerves, to fix his uneven footing. Or maybe there’s just no more space for his hands to even reach with how close you drift. His eyes are soft and gentle when he looks back up at you, cautious and bearing all that the man with a gun refuses to. 

Or maybe just never allows himself to.

“I know one.”

And that’s when you finally, finally, finally—

After all this fucking time—

In the light of a full moon and a marble-sheened dance floor, outside the world of dreams, outside of secrets held in warm sleeping bags and claustrophobic caves and all the life you didn't live until you found each other, finally, finally, within your sunlit, unashamed reality—

"Really? Sure sounds it." from where he was stood anyway, Ruby could say what she wanted and yet Nate wouldn't believe her, she was ATF after all. She didn't have a bone in her body that he could trust and in all honesty? He didn't want to. The fact that she knew about his cat told him all he did need to know. It's also a piece of information he feels insanely defensive about, knowing that he would actually protect Chip until his dying breath. Sure, he always swore about his feline friend, but he loved that fucker immensely.

The mention of his dad has him chuckling; choosing to not respond at all. He already knew it was a dig to some degree, so he saw no point. He certainly wasn't going to get into a bickering match, he'd literally rather throw himself off of a cliff. "Vision's twenty twenty, actually." he quipped back to her calling him blind, a light smug smile rising on his features, mainly because he thought he was funny.

"Beats me..." there's a hint of sarcasm in his voice as he shrugged his shoulders lightly, choosing to play dumb. "Not sure why anyone would hate ya with that sparkling personality." using her own words against her he offers her a smile, one that fades quickly.

"Windows?" She looked at him with disgust evident on her features. She hadn't done anything as silly as that for a long time. If anything, she had to infiltrate a gang and pretend to be one of them to get information, but that was about it. Others did the job of writing down information about certain people. The more power they held, the more information they had. Nothing was ever certain, especially since Harold was his father. "Contrary to your belief, I don't actually have time for those things." She really didn't, not with being in two places at once at all of the times. Pretending to be someone, even if it had become second nature to her, made her be more aware of every single step she took, every person she spoke to. "What, you're going to run to Daddy? I wonder how he would take that." Not that she particularly was interested int he chief of police. Technically, Ruby's boss was an entirely different nation.

Ruby looked at him, feigning shock, with her mouth gaping open. "You're fucking blind." The evidence of that was the spots of blood on her dress. If she wanted to, she could have easily broken more than just his nose, but then she really would have been placed on the bench for a month. That was not something that would sit well with LS, if she were being honest with herself. But the punch? No risk, no magic. "Aw, adorable. Takes me back to those highschool days." She never had issues with his sister, Logan. If anything, it was healthy competition which never resulted in the principal's office, at least for her.

"Who needs friends when I have my sparkling personality?" She grinned in response. "Plus, people here really hate us agents, I wonder why, huh?"
