Hi Linda, hope you're well!
Love your comics, both Punderworld and Blood Stain.
From one webcomic artist to another, how do you make your backgrounds? What are your techniques? I would like to make better ones (sometimes I use 3D, but painting a natural one always bugs me)
Cheers from Brasil!
hello! Thank you so much!
The way I do nature is I made myself a lot of foliage brushes over the years which help me block out environments in an easy way, but what's most important is the lighting in all of those scenes. You can have the best brushes in the world but if the lighting is off the environment will not look real. So I always advise to study/observe from real life when going for a walk to learn how colors/light/shadows behave outside during certain part of the day/weather.
Also observing plants and grass and understanding how ground is a variation of different things like pebbles, earth, flowers, dead leaves and grass can help with making your nature look more interesting.

Another thing that's useful is to observe the sky and how time of day impacts the illumination. bright days cast blue shadows, while dusk and sunsets make a lot of distant things silhouetted and simplified.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My basic cheatcode for the sky is to have the gradient from darker color towards the brighter. For stormy weather it will be inverted. (clouds that gather lower will look darker and heavier in the bottom) For ground I like to have a grass field and then on top I add some rocks for variety, some tiny white flowers, some yellow dandelions (all of them are the same oval brush XD) some dry grass poking out, a couple of accents of bushes with branches. and then depending on the time of day I will use hard light layer to drop shadows down, and add some highlights.
Always works!

I want to start drawing landscape. Do you have any tips?
Took me a while to answer this (sorry anon)! Drawing landscapes for me are mostly just a matter of doing a few 'art studies' and a bit of imitating life. Here's a brief rundown of my process. I find that I learn best when I see a picture or a reference that really tickles my fancy, like these ones! First image for it's colors, and the second for it's composition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then I pull up the dreaded white canvas on start on a rough idea or just start dribbling out the basics: composition, a bit of color, general shapes, etc. If you have a hard time doing general landscapes, don't worry! Imagine breaking it down like this: You layer on some general colors and shapes; don't be afraid to make mistakes, you can always go back to it! Be loose and organic with it at first, we're not striving for detail yet, and just let that brush move freely. And once you got the shapes down, you can go back and forth in the canvas to start detailing. I find that it's best if you really look into how some things are "made". Like for example, how that patch of grass in your reference is made: 'is it layered? does it have some shiny bits in it that I wanna highlight? are the blades of grass sharp enough to individually detail or more clumped up together to just put in a sorta grassy blob?'. Also, don't be afraid to experiment a bit. Try putting some highlights around the edges to make it pop out more, or try putting small changes in the color you're working with; something that's close but still different, so that it compliments each other! Then it's just a matter of going forward with it; see what you like and what you wanna keep and imitate, see what you want to change or maybe just leave out on. Keep on detailing and going until you're happy with it!
Tumblr media
This is a really brief rundown and explanation of a process that can be entire unique to each and everyone of us, and takes a bit of time and practice to pull off. But I believe in you! We all start from somewhere, sometime down the line; and that can start right now if you want it to! Goodluck to any artists out there who wanna try out landscapes. It's a fun and comforting process of organic and loose art that breathes in a lot of life in some people, especially me. Twitter | Prints | Ko-Fi | Patreon

Raw photo.

2. Darken background w/ masking (focusing on blacks and darks, leave highlights alone because it will get rid of the delightful little bokeh on the water surface. Also popped the saturation & warmed up white balance)
Tumblr media
3. Run De-noise (not necessary per-se, but pulls some details back into some of the feathers and I'm a recovering pixel peeper.)
Tumblr media
4. Final touches: open in photoshop and dodge/burn the particles in the water, and around the backlit feathers to pull a little more contrast/saturation. Also took a little saturation out of the lightest feathers of the ducklings bc they pulled too orange for me, and knocked the white balance a little more green - the whole image was feeling a little too pink for me.

Full-size before and afters.
This is pretty much the exact process I follow with backlit images. I try to keep most of my edits "true to life" - but there is a lot of subjectivity in that statement lol.
Image Deets:
Nikon z7ii x. 180-600.
600mm
F 6.3
1/800 (handheld/propped up on a tree root)
ISO 2000
Tumblr media
The usual set up. I often lose the tripod bc it doesn't get low enough for me most of the time. So I end up balancing my camera on my feet, or a root, or something.

Had another of those, I should draw something but not sure what moments and before I lost time and motivation, I decided to do a quick tutorial. Chose one of James Julier’s shorter videos for a nice art warm up 😊
