The Environmental Protection Agency denied a petition Wednesday that asked the federal agency to more closely regulate a group of chemicals used in pesticide-coated seeds, which are linked to killing pollinators such as hummingbirds and bumblebees.

The petition, filed in 2017 by nonprofits Center for Food Safety, Pesticide Action Network of North America, and Pollinator Stewardship Council, among other groups, claimed that the EPA’s lack of regulation on the seeds “could precipitate an economic and ecological disaster.”

“We gave EPA a golden chance and a blueprint to fix a problem that has caused significant harm to people, bees, birds, and the environment — and it stubbornly refused,” said Amy van Saun, senior attorney with the Center for Food Safety, in a statement. “It’s extremely disappointing and we’ll be exploring all possible next steps to protect communities and the environment from the hazard of pesticide-coated seeds, including a lawsuit challenging this decision.”

The seeds in question are coated in a class of chemicals known as neonicotinoids, or “neonics,” and have been cited in the mass die-off of various pollinators, such as bees and birds. The seeds are covered in chemicals that harm pollinators’ nervous systems, causing paralysis and death. The chemicals, banned in the European Union, aren’t regulated by the EPA’s pesticide enforcement rulings, which prompted environmental and ecological groups to take legal action. In the agriculture industry, seeds are treated with pesticides before they are put in the ground to protect plants from pests and diseases.

In its responsive letter, the EPA said it does not agree with the request of the petitioners to “categorically exclude seed treated with systemic pesticides” from the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. This EPA legislation limits the use of pesticides that “generally pose unreasonable risks to people, including agricultural workers, or the environment.”

In addition to killing bees, the class of chemicals has also been cited as a public health concern and directly linked to nearly 2,000 pet deaths, caused by flea and tick collars, which have also caused seizures in humans. The federal agency has not issued a formal warning against these collars.

What do you dislike about hibiscus? Just asking out of curiosity since you have lots of cool insights about plants & stuff. I had one growing indoors for a while that I got rid of recently.

Tropical hibiscus in my climate are largely just junk plants produced on such a mass scale and then pumped out to garden centers in spring that they're just... for one, half the time they arrive off the truck beat up, crooked, in crappy soil that doesn't retain water, not in full bloom, already infested with pests, etc. My workplace and many like it get one or two huge huge tropical shipments early in spring that are largely hibiscus in various colors and sizes, which then usually involves cramming a whole forest of trees that can't go outside for a month and need frequent watering into limited space...

They get every potential greenhouse pest incredibly easily, because honestly their lives are fairly stressful. Spider mites, scale, aphids, mealybugs, thrips, and whitefly. Often multiple different infestations on the same plant. They sometimes decide to drop half their leaves or not flower for months after arriving and it's very rare that they come in labelled by color so then no one wants to buy them because they don't know what color flowers they have... Even when in flower, the flowers only last a day and then drop messily everywhere. They turn to wet sludge on the floor and spread all kinds of nasty fungus or just are a tripping hazard. This also makes them annoying for people's patios/pools/porches. Also, their pollen gets everywhere.

Even when you take them home, there's a good chance they won't hit their stride bloom-wise until the height of summer. If you have dumped enough water on them every day that they don't stress out, defoliate, and acquire pests before you can really enjoy the blooms. If you don't repot them, their compacted, terrible sandy soil is atrocious to keep hydrated but if you do repot them into a larger container, they may refuse to bloom.

Their flowers are attractive to pollinators like bees but will completely drench those bees in pollen to the point that they can barely fly aaand their pest prone tendencies means they have a higher chance of having to be treated multiple multiple times through their lives with neonics or other pesticides.

Then I very often get questions about keeping hibiscus through the winter as a houseplant... good luck. I do know some people who have very good luck with overwintering their hibiscus year after year but the pest pressure alone makes me warn firsttimers against trying it. Shoving a full sun, tropical tree into our dimly lit, cold, forced air homes is just a recipe for acquiring all kinds of weird stuff.

Ivan, Ivan Ivan. Ivan Is one of my ocs, He has gone through quite a bit. **inhales in infodump**

-Blood in the snow- Ivan Soklovov is a man made dragon, using the DNA of a wyvern and the bones of the Leviathan. he was made in Russia, and was meant to be a weapon for the upcoming WW III, and he was often forced to Be in his draconic form. he does prefer to be human however. He wound up escaping the lab, using his massive wings to flee to the US. He wound up joining their air force, After going to college, and he quickly made up the ranks due to being a powerful man. he was about 25 at this time, he also broke off his horns, and Chopped off his tail entirely, leaving only his wings in his human form. He wound up realizing he was a Gay man at this time, and he fell in love with another man in the air force, His name being Hubert. the 2 had to keep their relationship a secret, to not be punished by their commander. They kept it well hidden for as long as they could, which was about 2 years, when alas, their commander came into Ivan's dorm one night, to request Ivan to scout the base, And the lovers were Sleeping together (take that however you want). The next day, for "unknown reasons" The base was attacked, And Hubert was killed. Ivan suffered severe injuries from the attack, as well as being shot down from his jet into the ocean, where he was found a few hours later, unconscious. Ivan was unconscious for about a week, and totally bedridden for a month and a half. When he awoke, His commander dropped Huberts dog tags on Ivans chest, with a twisted smile upon his face. Many more months pass, not much happens, when a nuclear bomb, with too many flaws, was dropped on russia causing the whole world to end... the only survivors were the neonics, and 4 people. ivan being one of them. -The Curse of Goriah- Time after the nuke went off, Ivan and 3 other Beings (Isacc, Kai, and Patron Enyo) Rebuilt the world with a more magical and cyber approach. Well, Isacc lost his caring personality somehow and tried to murder Ivan in his sleep. arguments arose between the 2, things got physical, and then an all out War between the 2, which lasted 2 years. In this War, Ivan turned into the Wyverithan, and destroyed many of the cities he himself built up, killing billions of innocents in the process, due to his blind rage in that form. Isacc wound up defeating Ivan, leaving Ivan in a temporarily (but soon to be regained) crippled state. Ivan was basically never heard of again since that. Eventually, with the threat of one of the 4 horsemen on the Land he helped build, he made 3 parts to 1 weapon, a recreation of the Bio titan.He however, was anything caring to 001-X, the main part of this weapon, and treated her horridly. Eventually, 001-X (now known as Enyo), Fed up with this, Attacked Ivan, Ripping off one Of his arms, A wing, scarring and tearing his face, tearing his neck open, and Destroying his internal chest structure. The only reason Ivan survived was his assistant, Dr. Ray Quickly grabbing him in her Lycan Form, and getting the Fuck out of the lab. Eventually, Enyo Came to Finish her job, but, things went Arye, and Something had Caused Enyo to go blind, instead of hurting Enyo, Ivan Showed her kindness, and tended to her injuries. Nowadays, Ivan is a tired and Depressed man, who just wishes his life would get better, He's often at the bar or some sort of club, being a drunk idiot. He does have Feelings for another man, but due to his Fear and Trauma of loosing Hubert, and being hurt in the past for being in a relationship with another man, he's too scared to confess.
