The clock in the corner of the bullpen read almost midnight, but Spencer was still talking, excited as ever. You couldn’t quite remember how the conversation had even started — maybe he was explaining some correlation between crime statistics and seasonal patterns — but now his words filled the quiet space like a steady, hypnotic melody.

Except you weren’t really listening. Not really.

You were too distracted by the way he gestured, by how his glasses slid slightly down the bridge of his nose and how he adjusted them automatically without even noticing. And that suit of his, which somehow looked even more charming on him at the end of a long day. His hair was slightly tousled, his expression focused… Spencer had this way of being a little absent-minded, completely absorbed in his own thoughts, and that just made everything about him more captivating.

You bit the corner of your lip, feeling your heart beat a little faster as he leaned over the desk, pointing to some formula scribbled on a piece of paper. How could he talk so much, so fast, and still look ridiculously attractive?

Suddenly, he turned to you, his eyes shining with enthusiasm.

You had to stop him. Or you were seriously going to lose your mind.

— “Reid…” — you called, your voice a little softer.

He stopped mid-sentence, looking at you curiously, those warm brown eyes as earnest as always.

You smirked, leaning in a bit closer, just enough to shrink the space between you, but not so much as to be too obvious.

— “Wanna hear a joke?”

He raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued by the sudden change of subject.

— “I like jokes…” — he replied, in that sincere, totally unguarded tone of his.

You took a breath, letting your voice drop just slightly into something more playful, more provocative — just to test, to see how far you could push him — and then, as casually as if it were nothing, you said:

— “If my legs open at an obtuse angle… can you be my bisector?”

The silence that followed was almost cinematic.

Spencer froze completely. For a whole second, it was like his brain short-circuited.

His eyes widened, his mouth slightly open, as if he hadn’t heard you right.

— “I… uh…” — he tried, but his voice cracked. Then he cleared his throat, trying to regain some shred of dignity, but the instant flush that spread from his neck to his ears completely gave him away. — “I…”

You had to fight not to burst out laughing.

But before you could say anything else, you noticed the movement around you.

The entire team, who until then had seemed absorbed in reports or phones, had clearly heard.

Emily swiveled in her chair, her eyes wide in total disbelief.

— “She did not just say that…” — she muttered, mostly to herself, but you caught it.

JJ, holding a mug, froze with the drink halfway to her mouth.

— “Oh my god…”

Rossi, passing by with some papers, stopped, staring at you both like he was witnessing a car crash in slow motion. Then, after a beat, with that signature dry humor of his, he quipped:

— “Should I go ahead and report this to HR… or are we all just pretending this didn’t happen?”

Emily let out a stifled laugh, while JJ shook her head, both shocked and clearly entertained by the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Spencer… well, Spencer looked like he was about to combust.

— “It… it’s a… a geometric reference…” — he tried to explain, stammering more than you thought was humanly possible.

You leaned back in your chair, triumphant, watching him completely unravel, unable to even make eye contact with you, his glasses slightly askew, his hands fidgeting unnecessarily with some papers.

— “Didn’t know you liked math that much…” — you teased, still smiling.

Spencer let out an incoherent sound, somewhere between a nervous laugh and a sigh of utter defeat, while Derek kept looking around, exasperated:

— “Seriously, can someone tell me?!”

And that’s when you couldn’t hold it anymore — you burst out laughing, joined quickly by Emily and JJ, while Spencer just sank deeper into his chair, now hiding his face in his hands.

In the end, maybe he learned his lesson: never underestimate the power of a joke… especially when the statistical probability of rendering Spencer Reid completely speechless was, apparently, 100%.
