14. Stone Fruit, by Lee Lai
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 231 My summary: Bron and Ray love each other, and they love their niece Nessie. But in the adult world, relationships don't always work out, and their comfortable world is soon to rupture. They're looking for a family that they can't achieve, a home that might never have been there in the first place - and being who you are is a thorny path. My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
This was a completely random pull from the shelves. As I've said here before, I'm always on the lookout for interesting graphic novels, so when one comes in on the shelves at work I'm gonna give it a try. This is the story of Ray and Bron, two women in a tense relationship, who help look after Ray's niece. Bron is a trans woman, and is going through a personal crisis that ends with her leaving Ray and returning to her highly homophobic and transphobic family, who just tolerate her presence at best. Ray is frustrated and distraught over Bron's decision, both out of concern for her and anger that they broke up. Meanwhile Bron is unmoored, drifting between the fringes of the life she almost wishes she had and the good thing she abandoned in order to get this far. It's bittersweet, not a kind or cushy narrative, but there's a reality to it. Real life isn't always nice. Sometimes, real life relationships end in bitterness. And that was really well encapsulated here.
First - the art style is interesting, you can truly see the exhaustion felt by these characters written all over their faces. It's also not afraid to go a little strange at times, with the characters taking on an almost wolflike appearance whenever they are playing together in the woods. It's very effective! But yeah, this is a story about a bad breakup, about a child caught in the middle of adult drama she can't really understand, about trauma and regret and failed attempts at reconciliation. This is the true nature of adult relationships, sometimes - it's not going to be all up, sometimes things go wrong or people drift apart. And I think this is portrayed in a very realistic fashion. Ray and Bron felt like they could genuinely be people living out there, like they were real. Their situation, while messy, was far from unique. And I liked that about it.
Next, five tales of Jewish resistance.

She's lived in Covington for a majority of her life but was originally born in Turkey like her older sister.
The Turans grew up with modest means. They weren't rich but, they got by. They were very supportive of their children and made sure to celebrate their successes.
Bek was the scholar, the shining star. While Nesli was a star but in her own right. From an early age she loved music. Loved listening to it, playing it, and writing it. She knew one day she'd see her name in lights and she'd stop at nothing to get there.
While Bek transcended in school and was considered something of a child genius, Nesli struggled. She suffered with reading dyslexia but tried her best to overcome it.
She got decent grades in hopes of making her parents just as proud but in someway or another, she always came up short. She knew it was because her gifts were different.
So around the time she got to high school, she begged and pleaded with her parents to send her to an art school rather than to a regular school. With the help of scholarships, her first ever job and an apprenticeship she got with a local musician - she was able to go. Avoiding not only the ridicule that would be waiting for her upon being labeled "Baby Bek's little sister" but an atmosphere that wouldn't serve her.
Turns out she excelled, as any young aspiring musician would and later left her hometown to pursue music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
In between her studies, she would perform at local bars and coffee shops in hopes of landing a bigger gig and getting recognized. It took two to three years of strenuous hustling and making connections to gain some traction. But, it wasn't until she started posting videos of her performances on TikTok and clips of her singing covers in her bedroom for her career to take off.
A music rep at Red Bedroom records came across her page and was blown away by what they saw. Although young, she had something that most seasoned musicians could never emulate. They signed her a few weeks later and she immediately started recording songs she had tucked away in journals over the years.
Her first album when platinum 13 months later and in the height of her so called "fame" she'd accumulated a wide audience ranging of close to one million followers.
From there, she spent the next 2-3 years traveling and touring across the world. She even broadened her range by working with other artists in the industry, some even from the same label.
Around this time of collaborating, she'd met her then boyfriend - a country singer - who furthered her career and helped her rake in new fans and followers. The internet couldn't get enough of them together. And while on the outside everything seemed picture perfect, there was a dark side lurking beneath their relationship. Like all great things that shine brilliantly and brightly, their relationship faded fast.
Heartbroken, Nesli fell into a deep funk. And before she knew it, her label was pressuring her to put out her sophomore album. The only problem was, she couldn't write to save her life. Her first record consisted of a body of work she cultivated since she was a preteen. How was she ever going to top it? The more they pressed her for new songs, the more she cracked under the pressure, resulting to some very bad habits.
They recently gave her 3 months to clean up her act and come up with new material or they would be forced to drop her for good. Afraid and confused, it's forced her to return home with her tail tucked between her legs and the weight of her entire world on her shoulders. Nesli is hoping that being around her friends, her family, and her hometown might actually knock a few screws loose so the floodgates to new material would pour open but she's not holding her breath.
At the very same time, she'll do whatever it takes to carry on. Because if there's one thing she couldn't bear to lose, it's the only dream she's ever truly had or been great at.

Dandadan Volume 4: Have You Ever Seen A Cattle Mutiliation?
Tumblr media
It's really so easy to lose sight of the vibe of a series when you've got 3 or more months between volumes. Despite that, Dandadan volume 4 hardly misses a beat as it caps off the Nessie/Serpoian fight of volume 3 and begins to set up for our next close encounter of the 3rd kind. Thanks to that, there's not a huge world of things to talk about specific to this volume, but I feel like that break gives us the perfect opportunity to dive further into Yukinobu Tatsu as a mangaka.
I'll just say it to get it over and done with: Tatsu, with the right story, would make for a great slice of life/comedy mangaka. The humor, the posing, the interactions, the sheer oddity of their appeal. It's the perfect recipe for a story you can't put down that doesn't need action or drama or anything like that to keep it going.
This doesn't mean they shouldn't create action stories like Dandadan, but it does mean I think Tatsu has room to grow in regards to action series, so I'll start there.
The combat itself is interesting and innovative, but hinges on large movements and actions that are preceded by careful planning and struggling against a far superior enemy. This in itself isn't a bad thing, but requires effort and ability to pull off the pieces in between planning/struggling, and execution. And I feel like Tatsu is just on the cusp of grasping it. The big moments are big and impactful, but the in between can feel lacking, and out of sync with those bigger moments.
Take this page as the prime example. The two action shots of Aira are very good. The top is a very unique angle on the situation, while the bottom plays into a more typical style in aggressive fashion. The middle that separates them though, I'd say it's very far from being needed or contributing to the flow of the moment.
Tumblr media
I think even further, a piece that Tatsu is so close to grabbing, is the level of detail for events. Not so much how much work is put into the art for it, but how much is shown for the respective moments. Pieces that you'd want to see more of you get very little for, and then other pieces that seem somewhat inconsequential you get plenty for.
Of course, this isn't the case for everything, as Tatsu provides an incredible sequence for Momo to finish off our Serpoian Nessie here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The storyboarding, the degree of detail in it, and just the sheer quality. It's an incredible moment that shows Tatsu at their very sharpest in this volume, at the peak of their ability to deliver action and energy through this story.
But anyways, the next piece. Tatsu's Always Timely Humor ™️. Tatsu just gets humor. They get the kind of humor that they enjoy, and they get the kind of humor that works perfectly with their absurdist approach. And whaddya know? They're one in the same.
So, what's the secret to conveying this humor that Tatsu's so good at? Sincere characters paired with an absurdist reality and posing. The comedy is such a genuine piece of the characters that the ridiculous poses and insanely odd setups meld perfectly with the overall story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And just one last bit of good humor that brings us perfectly into the next topic. The Mantis Shrimp alien became an outlaw for the sake of his son who has an illness that causes him to lose blood daily. As our group of misfits finds out, the blood that runs in that Mantis Shrimp-like alien's blood is nothing else than milk. Thanks to that we get a classic cow abduction scene with some added flavor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, that second image? That's 100% an homage to the Millenium Falcon (with a few tweaks to avoid copyright). And that's where the next piece of praise comes from for Tatsu (and why they'd be great with a slice of life/comedy story). The references are on point and creative, and stay true to where the material comes from. Disparate to his one-time senpai Fujimoto, Tatsu's references are very forthcoming, and play a core role in the comedy and reception of the story. They don't carry the story or its humor, like parody series tend to lean on, but it adds a very nice complement that provides variety and breadth.
And truthfully, I think that summarizes a lot of my thoughts on the volume. An old "friend" of Momo's returns with promises of a haunted houses and further teasing of the Serpoians being involved, and this time a reverse triangle appears as Okarun and Momo's "friend" Jiji vie for attention from her. It's well done, and it provides a nice break that allows for the house to be explored in full with the next volume.
I don't think it's a surprise to any that Yukinobu Tatsu and Dandadan are good, but I think it's pretty clear the improvements that appear the longer that Tatsu gets with this story, and the further they grow as a well rounded mangaka similar to their tutor(s), such as Fujimoto. So yeah, Dandadan good. You should read.

Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen
Tumblr media
Sarah Andersen’s Cryptid Club is a fun, lighthearted, and humourous collection of comics depicting the adventures of our favorite mysterious supernatural creatures. I love Andersen’s delightful and homey art and the storylines are hilarious and relatable.
The book features eternally popular cryptids like Bigfoot, Nessie the Loch Ness Monster, and Mothman as well as newer additions to the lore like The Fresno Nightcrawlers and Slenderman. There are also supernatural staples like ghosts and aliens and even Chupacabra and Cthulhu! I really like that we get to see a range of cryptids and not just the usual suspects.
This book consists of mostly one-page panels which depict the cryptids’ daily lives as they try to make friends, enjoy celebrations, go on dates, and interact with the human world. I love the bright and eye-catchingly colourful panels filled with Andersen’s cute and friendly drawings. I really like her cute and unique depictions of the cryptids.
I love Andersen’s lighthearted, silly, and apt humour! She wonderfully manages to make these mysterious and terrifying creatures of lore into accessible creatures who, although they are still spooky and retain many of their popular characteristics, are surprisingly a lot like us! It is quite sweet and endearing to see the cryptids enjoying a Christmas tree, learning each other’s languages, and hiding from us humans! The siren’s disastrous dating attempts, girls’ night with the cryptids, and Mothman’s obsession with light to the point that Bigfoot has to carry him off are just some of the absolutely hilarious moments in this book.
I’ve always been a fan of Andersen’s work and Cryptid Club is another wonderful addition to her collection! It is a quick and funny little treat filled with great and endearing artwork. This is a perfect read for her longtime fans as well as those who love anything spooky.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Stone Fruit by Lee Lai. Fantagraphics, 2021. 9781683964261. 232pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781683964261?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Ray and her girlfriend Bron care for Rachel's niece, Nessie, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They're wild days full of love and made up songs. But on non-Nessie days things are strained between Ray and Bron. Bron feels depressed and lost, and hates that Ray seems to want to save her. Spending time with Nessie makes them hang onto their relationship for a few extra months, but then Bron decides to leave, to go back home to stay with her conservative, religious family, the same people who once tried to convince her she wasn't trans.
Ray is devastated. And when she tries to back out of her commitment to help her sister Amanda by watching Nessie two days a week, both sisters call each other on their shit and start to talk in a way that they haven't in years. At the same time Bron is reconnecting with her younger sister, and even with her parents a bit.
This graphic novel is so damned good. Lai is a master of the four-panel comics page, and uses the format to pace the conversations in a way that makes them feel real. I love all of the art, but I particularly admire the pages where Bron and Ray and Nessie seem to transform into feral monsters while playing together. Lai leaves them unexplained, and what's happening is only clear in the context of conversations later in the book.

Hello, friends. I’m John of John Webster Film over on Twitter and YouTube. I also co-host another YouTube channel with my friends Steven and Nessie called Here Be Dragons.
I also have another page here on Tumblr centered on my crush — Keira Knightley (Knights of Keira). Check it out if you’re a big fan of her, as I am.
However, I decided I wanted to start up another page that would allow me to open things up a bit and talk & post about my other interests. Namely, films and tv shows I love, as well as books. Expect lots of thoughts on Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and a host of other films and media. Maybe even some personal things here and there.
I’ve been using Twitter for that for a while, but find that I want to spend a bit less time there as it often impacts my state of mind in a not so great way.
Also, posting on here will allow me to expand on my musings in a way that Twitter doesn’t allow, with its character limit and so forth.
Anyway, I hope some of this is of interest, and I look forward to interacting with you guys. 🧡
P.S. Thank you to my wonderful friend @sanrixian for this amazing profile art that she made for me. ❤️
