Language Learning Log 2025 - Week 14 (30/03 〜 05/04)

Banner: I went to an izakaya with one of my new colleagues this week. The drinks had little ducks in them! When I got home that night I found min in my bag (oops) but when I tried to take it back they insisted it was a gift and I should keep it 😂

Day 5

Managed to keep to my schedule I set for myself, though was a little off track. However I kept to each piece of material I set.

I'll be starting to include just what I'm using in case anyone wants to correct me?

I started the day with a simple word of the day which was 雪 and the simple phrases to follow using that word. I then started reviewing ひらがな and カタカナ afterwords.

I then worked on Kanji which right now is only one a day unless i can work myself to learning more a day. After that I designated 2 hours away from studying for lunch/rest and for Art.

Coming back to studying, I reviewed the kanji that I learned in order to cement it in my head better then worked on the げんき workbook.

Next was an easy hour of working with a Japanese color book with words and pictures to correlate to each one, a word search of different anime in ひらがな, then coming away a slight bit by filling out a diary and a bullet journal of how my day was and what I did.

After was Dinner and with in that hour I've been working on Web studies (such as NHK, Rosetta, and others I come across.)

Next was a bit more web study then it will follow by some materials i had printed long ago i came across just to keep that knowledge.

After will continue the binder, then it will be any apps I have downloaded (, Drops, Busuu, Bunpo and others.)

Throughout the day I have had various videos play while I study to keep my mind on Japanese learning and continue even while I'm away from studying outright, to semi studying.

The only think i need is a study buddy/ someone to talk to that speaks it to help me learn, yet money is very scarce... so this all will have to do. Thank you for bothering to look over this.

The Future's in Our Hands (WIP)

I've been working on a slightly more linguistically realistic Dr. Stone canon rewrite fic featuring my Ishigami Village conlang! Here's Kohaku and Senku's first meeting, for anyone interested!

A/N: For those who don't know, "Nihongo" the Japanese word for Japanese (as in the language). Keep this in mind while reading.

Chapter 1 WIP 1

Senku rushed towards the sound of the crashing tree, stopping just long enough to ensure Tsukasa had left before entering the clearing. There was a girl, presumably the one who lit the signal fires, trapped underneath a massive tree trunk.

Her eyes widened when she saw him, but she looked more surprised than afraid, which was good.

"Jol ùconob dèt jec pùsegd ùmà! Jol lìb!" She exclaimed in some unfamiliar foreign language.

“Don’t waste energy talking! We can introduce ourselves until we’re sick of each other once you’re safe! Save your strength for now. Can you hold out until sunset?” He asked, hoping she knew enough Japanese to get the gist of what he was saying.

No such luck. The girl blinked, then narrowed her eyes in confusion.

“Do you speak Japanese?” he asked.

“Yes. Not well. Can you speak slow?” she replied, in a heavy accent he didn’t recognize.

“Right,” he repeated, speaking slower, “Can you hold out until sunset? You have two options. If you’re gonna die, I can use all my gunpowder to save you, but it might not work and it’s more dangerous. If you can hold out longer I can definitely save you, it just might take a while. Only you can make the choice, so choose quickly.”

The girl took a minute to process what he was saying, then replied, “My organs and bones are okay. I can wait.”

It didn’t take quite as long as expected to make the pulley system.

"D'n'a jol znèjiššii Mìhtsryec?" the girl asked while he was soaping up the ropes.

Senku didn’t recognize the language. Some of the words reminded him a bit of Russian, which he tried to learn a while back in order to parse some research papers he couldn't find good translations for. That being said, none lined up perfectly. He couldn't draw any solid conclusions from just a few sentences of data.

“Sorry, I can’t understand you.” He replied.

“You don’t speak Mìhtsryeci,” she stated, sounding as though the concept puzzled her.

Ah. If Mìhtsryec was the name of a language, that would be a point to Senku's hypothesis about Russian influence.

“Mitsuryechi?” he asked.

“Mìhtsryets is…” she paused, “common speech, for talking. Ñìhoŋïg is old speech, for stories. How do you know Ñìhoŋ but you not know Mìhtsryec?”

Linguistics wasn’t exactly Senku’s specialty, but it didn’t take a genius linguist to guess “Ñìhoŋ” or "Ñìhoŋïg" was clearly related to “Nihongo”, with some extra stuff tacked on the end in the latter case. Interesting. If this strange language was Russian, it definitely had a fair bit of Japanese influence.

“Where I’m from, Ñihoŋïg was common speech,” Senku replied, trying his best to copy her pronunciation of the word. It was a good thing some version of Japanese had been preserved, otherwise this would’ve been much more difficult. He should probably try to learn the basics of this Mìhtsryec language too; it would be much harder to get whatever group this girl was a part of on his side if they couldn’t tell what he was saying.

“Strange,” she replied.

When Senku finished setting up the pulley system, he couldn’t help but go on a bit of a tangent about its history, even if he was fairly sure the girl wouldn’t understand most of what he was saying. He jumped down, pulling on the rope. The log lifted.

The girl muttered something in Mìhtsryec, then added on in Japanese, “I am Kohaku. I think I’ve fallen for you.”

“Seriously?” Senku asked, face scrunched up in a combination of disgust and horror, “You’ve got a crush on me? In an emergency like this?”

“No! That’s not what I’m saying!” The statement was reinforced by the clear confusion and annoyance in Kohaku’s voice. “I mean I like you as a person, so I’ll work with you.”

“Oh. I appreciate it.” Senku replied, making a mental note that that phrase’s meaning must’ve drifted in whatever version of Japanese Kohaku’s people spoke. “Nothing more illogical than a brain clouded by love.”

“It’s late. We’ll sleep here tonight. I’ll take you to my village tomorrow.” Kohaku stated, still clearly annoyed at the misunderstanding. “I can get wood. You use sorcery to start a fire.”

Talking Cat.

[a drabble where Atsushi has found a (pretend) talking cat]

It was lunch time. Atsushi went out to buy food outside, only to find a cat lying unconscious at the stairs (he's just sleeping, don't worry)

The cat was quite big, if you ever considered the stairs width, so he picked the cat up and put it on the 'welcome' rug. (outside the office of course. Kunikida would whip him without hesitation if he did put that thing inside.)

He strokes the cat's head. "don't block the way again alright?"

"why should I listened to you?"

wide eyed, Atsushi looked back at the cat in disbelief. he checked the cat's butt first for some reason, because he heard a male voice coming from that cat.

"How dare you interrupt my nap."

"You can talk?!"

The cat stretched it's back. "Of course i can. Why did you all humans underestimating us this much?"

"where did you learn japanese???"

The cat didn't change it's expression, but he swear he can hear a snort. The cat took time to answer this. "i don't need writing classes. Cats don't write"

"But you're too good as a cat"

"Because I am, a japanese cat." the cat sits. "NIHONGO FOREVA"

he don't know how to react with this. "..alright...I guess you're patriotic then"

"you don't??"

Atsushi lifts the cat again and put it on his lap, to check he cat more further, and realize that the collar didn't look promising. He sighed ("this is bullshit") and got the cat inside, to the log (Dazai) that is now at the sofa.

Except this log has already awaken, expecting his lunch that he asked Atsushi to buy.

"I thought I've gave you the money?"

Atsushi shakes his head and hand Dazai the 'talking' cat. "This cat can talk apparently"

They shared a silence.

"Atsushi....it's 2 in the afternoon."

"Someone is spying on us Dazai san!"

"there's nothing wrong with that."

"what??" Atsushi is taken aback. "but it's creepy.. why would someone's spying someone with uncertain haircut as us?"

"Excuse me??"

"meow"

Atsushi started to point out. "see?? This cat IS suspicious"

The cat 'chuckled', but Dazai's shoulder is shaking. He's covering his mouth, seems like trying to hold a laugh. that is when atsushi saw a tiny microphone poking out near dazai's cheek.

"....so it was you all along?"

Dazai let out a 'familiar' snort. "you're so slow Atsushi..."

"...can I verbally assault you?"

Practiced and reviewed my go to anki deck.

The deck I use is called the Core 2k/6k optimized japanese vocabulary deck.

So far , I can recognize a fair amount of words when I try to watch something with Japanese subtitles on.

My reading has also gotten a bit quicker as compared to last week and Im able to recognize most of the Kanjis from these kinds of example sentences.

Still have to complete my grammar lesson for today from Nihongoal 's youtube channel

leveled up to lvl 4 in wanikani, so it's time to pay subscription fee, i guess. i recognised a word that i learned from wanikani (出口) appear in an episode of cardcaptor sakura, so that's pretty cool. i need to listen to the audio more on new words instead of... just not doing that and realising i have no idea how the pitch is actually pronounced or etcetera. stopped genki self-study around a day ago for now. my japanese class is going at a pretty good pace because it's monday-friday, but i guess it's mostly because it takes a lot of effort to sit down and get myself to focus and study a textbook, and i kept procrastinating it to the end of the day. feels pretty painful. i'll like to go back when i have to switch to part-time classes, but we will probably see depending on time constraints then... ugh, maybe i'm just being lazy because i just end up spending less time on japanese now. guess i'll try to watch more anime in comparison, or either pick it up again. anyway, i guess i'll talk more about class a bit. i was surprised that minna no nihongo uses 2 books to complete the n5 comprising of 25 chapters in total, while genki has 12 chapters, but i guess genki's chapters are just way longer than minna no nihongo's. i can't really self-study minna no nihongo because the school buys the taiwan edition for some reason and thus all the grammar and vocab translations are in traditional chinese lmao. (they give out translations when you get to the chapter) pretty cool to be taught by a native japanese teacher who can talk about the nuances along with what words japanese people usually use / say. i usually enjoy class most of the time so far, unless i feel stressed out from failing to remember things that everyone seems to have remembered, so that's nice. probably worst thing about my class is how much it costs, man. we were doing some pair practice in class and the prompt was "name of school" ____ and my classmate was like (school name)は高いです。 and i just laughed because man. REAAAAL. if i paid this on my own, i'll only be able to take up to N3 while depleting almost everything, and honestly i don't know if i'm still going to be funded taking classes all the way through. i don't really have a "useful in our capitalistic society/to gain jobs/study opportunity" to learn japanese, and also because that's not really the reason why i'm learning, i guess. doubt there is money to go study overseas in japan university, (though i suppose i actually haven't done any research on this, though i'd imagine you'll have to look that up in japanese.) and i sure am not qualifying for MEXT scholarship in the future unless i want to self-study probably like 2 years of math and science (uh. quirk of the education system path thing i took which is not that relevant and way too long to explain. which leads me to question whether my education qualifications would even qualify regardless if i had money to study overseas or not...) and study something unrelated as a degree to what i've previously studied before, so uh. cool.

🌷 — [06 mar 2025] diary log .ᐟ

i'm at gong cha, a 3-minute tea house away from home, and while on my way, i can't help but appreciate the weather today. on my walk here, the breezy wind perfectly mixed together with the warm, blazing sun, and breathing has never felt this exhilarating.

there's just something magical about a sun's golden warmth wrapping around you like a lazy embrace, while the crisp air caresses your skin. it made me uncharacteristically giddy about being alive for the first time since forever. i can’t remember the last time i felt this light. this excited to just... exist.

it's stiil 12:44 p.m. but i feel so accomplished already. i studied economics and nihongo this morning, and right now, i'm writing on my blog (which i've been ghosting these past few days)— typing words that feel less like obligations. small wins, but they add up.

thanks to the weather, i'm in a good mood

i hope this kind of energy of mine continues 'till the end of the year— the focus, the quiet joy, and the way everything today just clicked. this day felt like a gift and gratitude doesn't quite cover it. i hope tomorrow (and the days after it) will be a good day too.

“Don’t learn romaji”

I took an eggbun course yesterday and I was amazed you can use english to spell out Japanese letters! Turns out, this is called romanization. I was writing down my notes and then I felt like watching this recommended video and the first point was: “Don’t learn romaji”.

I didn’t know what romaji was but that’s exactly what I was doing! The explanation behind this is that pronunciation could be messed up so its best to head straight to hiragana and katakana.

Now, will I follow her advice? Yes. I realized that if I do rely on learning the english I might just memorize it and that probably won’t be helpful in the long run. I think its best to listen to their advice and hope it works. I want to watch more videos like this, and I do have one in mind but I think that’s enough Japanese for me today! I really want to go about this at my own time and I think I should sleep since its already seven in the morning lol.

Next course of action:

- suspend basic greetings and go with hiragana and katakana first (since I’ll be writing anyway)

19.01.14 ♡ Language study log no. 1: Japanese

For the past three days, I have been studying bits of Japanese grammar and vocab from the Minna no nihongo book. Today I woke up with enough energy to solve an entire practice from the book. I love practices so I'm really excited to try and do more!

I'm currently on lesson 13 with grammar and vocab and on lesson 10 with the practices. I know about 70 kanjis and I am currently trying to get one of my friends to coach me through line calls when they come back from their winter break vacation~~

The goal for this year is either completing 100 hours of Japanese (I'm keeping track of the time with the Flip app) / finishing the みんなの日本語 book AND the Basic Kanji Book / or just feeling ok with speaking/texting in Japanese 😆

Welcome to my first study log update of the year! The year is still fresh and I'm happy to report that my motivation is still high. I find that making these study logs to track my progress I can maintain my motivation throughout the year, even during times where life and work get really busy and I think I won't have as much time for study. So, let's start this off!

今年の初勉強記録へようこそ！新年はまだ新鮮のに勉強のモチベーションはまだ高くて頑張っています。この勉強記録を作るのは勉強のモチベーションの一つになります。一年中に書くと、モチベーションが下がったり、忙しくなったりするときでもやる気が出ます。それで、今から1月の記録を始めます！

My 2023 Goals Progress

I laid out some broad goals for my Japanese study in my 2023 Japanese Language Goals post. This is my first report on the progress I've made on these goals during the month of January!

1. Read one page a day of 日本の歴史366 (にほんのれきし366) everyday in 2023.

Since it's only a page to read, and the subject is history, I make time to read the page (and look up the vocabulary I don't know ^^) every day.

2. Finish 日本語総まとめ N3 (にほんごそうまとめ N3) workbooks.

The JLPT N3 workbooks I am using are a bit more involved, so I can't do the work daily, but when I do have the time (about once a week or so) I sit down and go through the Vocabulary, Kanji, Grammar, and Listening workbooks all at once.

3. Review and learn the first 6 levels of the 常用漢字 (じょうようかんじ), specifically the 教育漢字 (きょういくかんじ) up to grade 6.

Lately, I have been focusing more on new kanji rather than kanji review of the 常用漢字, but in February I will return my focus to the grade 2 kanji I was reviewing previously.

4. Read at least one book every two months.

I think I might have taken on too much in January, as I have been trying to finish up a book I started in December, then I picked up a new book and a new manga in the beginning of this year. I am going through the new book page-by-page and recording any words or I don't know, which is taking up a lot of time. I doubt I will finish it this month, but once I am done with it I think I will have learned a lot of new vocabulary.

5. Improve my speaking and writing by finding a tutor.

I have put this goal on hold because of work, but when things calm down in April I plan to search for a tutor and make a weekly tutoring schedule. I plan to use italki because it is the most popular platform.

6. Study Japanese for at least 10 minutes a day.

This goal has been a habit of mine since the beginning of 2022, and I am glad to see that I have been keeping up with it so far in 2023. I have a basic tracker set up in Notion, and this inspires me to do something every day so that I have something to record. I've also picked up a heat map tracker from No zero days in 2023 langblr challenge which provides another visual method for tracking my daily study.

These methods help me to be very mindful with my studying, which is what 2023 is all about for me!

Reading - I have started off strong with reading, although I've probably taken on more reading material than I have time for. Books I am currently reading:

コン��ニ人間 - finishing from December (22% done)

満月珈琲店の星詠み - started Jan. 1st (15% done)

花野井くんと恋の病 (manga) - started Jan. 1st (30% done)

Vocabulary & Kanji - A lot of my vocab & kanji comes from my reading and making a vocab/kanji list from the 満月珈琲店 book I'm reading, but I also try to do vocabulary & kanji flash cards on a daily basis.

言葉で遊ぼう (Japanese wordle)

Listening - Primarily conversational listening with family and friends, or TV/movies, but with some 総まとめ workbook listening sprinkled in. I'd like to do some focused JLPT listening practice soon!

Grammar - Grammar videos are one of the best ways for me to study since they are about 15 minutes each and I take hand-written notes. This month I finished up the Nihongo no Mori JLPT N3 grammar videos!

Going Forward in February

I would like to build upon the momentum I created this month, and while I'd like to continue with the routine I have right now, I would like to add in a few other things to try to mix things up and keep studying interesting.

Continue with the six primary goals I made at the beginning of 2023

Try focusing on a different skill category each month (January has been focused primarily on Reading - I'd like to focus on Listening in February)

Try out a new app - I've downloaded a few different apps that I would like to try out in some detail

Refocus my kanji study on 常用漢字
