So I know that at minimum the portrayal of Laura is dicey in the manga and light novels, but I HARDCORE judge the anime for showing Raphael's colleagues as a bunch of average Joe nobodies when the Magic Tools Library is SUPPOSED to be full of the "weirdos" especially because I love every single one of them

Cornwall 2024 - Tag 17
Ladies and Gentlemen!
Good Night!

Project 1: GodSpit - An Overview of Where We're At Now
Tumblr media
GodSpit is the first and oldest idea I'm working on the plot for this NaNo. It's the only project I've already done substantial writing for, but I'm pretty unhappy with the direction the plot was taking, and wanting to rework it was kinda the impetus for this whole NaNo plotting work thing. It's also the project I'm the most casual about: it's 100% writing practice, verging on fanfic, and I don't expect to publish it. It's for fun. Like most of my creative ideas, GodSpit is stupidly derivative. It began with a sick thread on /tg/ (and then /qst/) called Totemist Quest, which began in 2011, authored by Diarca. The Totemist Quest world and magic system were extremely fun, but Diarca's posting was inconsistent and eventually stopped in 2019. Participating in those threads was a ton of fun (literally the only fun I ever had on 4chan), and I still check back every now and then to see if Diarca has posted again. If you're interested, you can read through all the old TQ threads here. GodSpit was my response to wanting more Totemist Quest. I loved the primary magic system, which involved "capturing" the spirits of monsters and adding them to weapons and armor to create wild effects, kind of like a fusion of Pokemon and Monster Hunter. I also loved the creative action, the diverse character cast, and Diarca's willingness to take things a little slow and explore both character and setting. I had other influences, too. D.M. Cornish's Monster Blood Tattoo books, Garth Nix's Seventh Tower, and the Monster Hunter video games being the biggest. There's bits and pieces of some Final Fantasys, some How To Train Your Dragon, a few Magic: The Gathering planes (mostly Kamigawa), and lightly seasoned with a touch of good old Naruto fanfic. One small note: I intentionally use some amalgams of real-world terms, languages, and religious symbols in this story mostly to translate style and intent. I never wish to cause offence or harm, so if that happens I want to know about it and change it. When I began writing GodSpit in 2019, it was with the idea of releasing it serially on Royal Road. So I researched what people said was succeeding on RR, and found a Reddit post of one author's advice. Their core message: don't take your foot off the gas. Break your story's neck. Go really fucking fast. So I tried to do that, I pantsed 9 chapters, ~12k words, looked back at it, and saw a jumbled mess. And now we're here. I even drafted up a ttrpg system for the setting and got a cover commissioned (the one at the top of this post, by the very cool and talented @lucyg_art on Instagram). I'll cover the current world and story of GodSpit in my next post, and then at some point soon I'll actually start re-plotting the whole fuckin thing out 😵‍💫

Note
So you know how the Cornish pasty was invented by miners who would use the ridge around the edge as a handle so they wouldn't get coal dust on their food? Are there similar foods in Tamriel that were a working class invention?
Posh folk often look down on working class food as crude and bland, and they could not be more wrong. Taking advantage of every available ingredient, whilst still being hearty and nutritious, here are some of the best working class dining favourites that Tamriel has to offer.
Altmer
Traditionally, working class High Elves are comprised primarily of dock workers and those tending to the famed vineyards and gardens of Summerset. Minced raw fish with dressing over steamed sticky rice is a typical meal enjoyed across the island, due to it being quick and no-frills to make. Dressing is usually a mix of honey, sesame oil, and saltrice sauce, and sometimes benefits from a refreshing twist of citrus juice.
Argonians
Rice balls held together by a sheet of dried river weed sound crude and not particularly appetising, but they are just the beginning of a delicious on-the-go meal enjoyed by Argonians in the Blackwood and Lilmoth regions of Black Marsh. The rice balls are shaped into triangles and are stuffed with dried or cooked fish, seeds, pickled vegetables, or a mix of ingredients, before being wrapped tightly in dried river weed and served cold.
Bosmer
Due to the Green Pact limiting the use of bread, Wood Elves have gotten very clever over the centuries, and use thin and flexible slices of meat or cheese to wrap up their lunches! Large slices of ham, salami, provolone, and dried timber mammoth cheese replace flatbreads, and are usually filled with (you guessed it) more meat and cheese! A popular combination is smoked wild boar with a drizzle of honey and feta, wrapped in a big sheet of honey-baked ham.
Bretons
Pasties are High Rock's major contribution to Tamrielic cuisine, but there is so much more to Breton working class food than that! Take, for example, the humble garlic baguette stuffed with escargot. Snails are found in abundance everywhere, and make for an easy and tasty meal when stuffed into a warm baguette basted liberally with herb and garlic butter. For a bit of extra luxury, some also slap on a couple of brie slices.
Dunmer
Stuffed scathecraw is an indispensable travel snack for any Dunmer, and is particularly handy for busy workers. The naturally thick and juicy leaves of the scathecraw plant are stuffed with any assortment of ingredients and baked on hot lava stones until crisp on the outside, sealing in the hot filling. Scathecraw is usually stuffed with minced nix-hound, hackle-lo, seasoned saltrice, and scuttle.
Imperials
Bread bowls are rumoured to have originated in Bruma, and are essentially whole loaves of bread hollowed out to create a bowl for soup or stews. The remaining bread is of course used for dunking, making the entire meal edible, as it's imperative that you eat the whole bowl, lid and all! Soups are usually rich and filling, such as cream of tomato or mushroom, chowder, or potato and bacon.
Khajiit
Similar to the Argonian rice balls, Khajiit have something similar made with glutinous rice, but served hot. Seasoned glutinous rice stuffed with minced meat, mushrooms, and moon sugar-cured dried sausage is steamed in pandan leaf wrappers shaped into pyramids. To eat, simply unwrap them and dig in! While they might seem small, these glutinous rice packages are very dense and filling!
Nords
While wheat flour is the staple flour of choice across Tamriel, we also enjoy using rye flour in traditional Skyrim baking due to its rich taste. Porridge pies, which sound far less appealing than they actually are, are hand-sized, crimped buns that are shaped into shells and filled with creamy rice porridge and baked. Particularly good served warm with a lick of butter and cinnamon, or topped with a diced boiled egg.
Orcs
Packed lunch the Orcish way is simple, hearty, and downright good. In brief, take whatever you want, slap it in a bit of dough, shape it into buns, and bake or fry. My favourite varieties are filled with curried mashed potato, radishes and pulled pork, minced beef and root vegetables, and horse steak and mammoth cheese. These handheld meals are practical, if a bit generic!
Redguards
Coconut rice is a popular Hammerfell dish with humble origins. Made by dock workers along the coast, whole coconuts are hollowed out for fruit, and like Imperial bread bowls, are used as vessels to hold steamed coconut rice. The rice is cooked in coconut milk, with chunks of fresh coconut flesh, roast seagull, snake, or goat, and lots of spices, chili, dried dates, and dried salted fish crisps. Also, did I mention how much fun it is to carry around your lunch in a coconut?

The Miys, Ch. 210
Weekly installation of mostly fluffy slice of life neurodivergent queer fiction in SPACE space space space!
October was a super busy month, so I’m glad to be through it.  HRT, Inktober, real life camping trip, one of my ersatz children making good trouble while the other one rebelled a little bit... Onwards to November, when I still have to decide if I am spatchcocking Cornish hens or just frying them.
I actually can’t do reader shout outs this week, because Inktober did get my notes all wonky.  However! @janeshadow, @necromancer04, and @drbibliophile were all extremely supportive of my clumsy attempts at art, so I do want to give them special acknowledgement.
As always, shout out to @baelpenrose for sticking it out through this chapter... It veered hard left for a minute, but he hung in there until it actually made sense again.
By the time I got back to my office, Else had done an admirable job clearing the ceiling and working their way down the walls. Tyche and Parvati were nowhere to be seen, which was just as well.  Given the near-fluorescent quality my workspace still had, it was in everyone’s best interest that Parvati was scheduled to shadow my sister today.
“Good call on Charly,” Hannah announced as I took a seat. “She was halfway through making a fresh batch of paint when I got ahold of her.”
I slumped in relief. “Xiomara is less than pleased with her homework, but not much else I can do. She has been warned, just in case, blah blah blah.” Roughly, I rubbed my face. “I need a vacation.”
“Don’t you usually go camping or something?  I know there was a camping trip last year.”
“Mmm hmm.” Alistair had kindly handed me another coffee - mostly hot this time, no straw. Things were looking up. “But we make planetfall in less than four months.  The next giant leap for mankind waits for no one.”
She blinked at me, skeptical. “The world won’t end if you vanish for three or four days.”
Shrugging, I shook my head. “I’d be camping alone. Schedules are all over the place right now, between essential projects in community shifts and essential tasks in work shifts. Hell,” I sighed, “I think the guys and I are only all home at the same time for maybe four hours a day?”
“That sucks,” she whispered emphatically.
“Can’t be helped. We’ve talked about it and come to terms with it.” Remembering the food I’d brought, I looked around. “Where are the - “
“Eaten, with salt and butter,” Alistair interrupted. “What hasn’t been demolished was absconded with to Tyche’s office with muttering about soups?”
“The Soup,” Hannah corrected. “Clearly, you haven’t had it, or you would know that.  Hey!” She perked up again. “You could do a picnic instead of camping? Small daycation?”
That set me groaning, leaning my head down to rest in my hands. “They’re deconstructing BioLab2 for biomass,” I half-wailed mournfully.  “I’m pretty sure the only reason Nixe hasn’t smashed my door down is because she’s too busy trying to get as much PT in with Teeth as possible before they drain the lake.”
Alistair drummed his fingers on the table, chewing his lip thoughtfully. “I am going to hazard the guess that either Mister Rodriguez has not been told that the same will happen to his tanks, or he has elected not to inform Her Majesty?”
I winked and waggled a finger at him. “Very close. Simon’s prodigious aquarium set ups are among the last to go.  They are currently being used to study mineral aquatics, and will be cycled out to become life pods for Else.”
“That explains the breathtaking lack of weapon marks on the doors, thank you.”
“No problem.” Taking a steadying breath, I looked around again. The pumpkins were vanishing slowly but surely. A reassuring sign. “On more official matters, the votes from the Ark are showing an eighty-twenty trend toward the From cave system, with seventy percent reporting already.” I called up the relevant map. “Which means we need to start figuring out where exactly to put everyone. These are the most recent geological scans, so let’s start taking inventory of who has preference of where they don’t want to be…”
That bought me a scant few minutes of relative silence before Hannah tapped my hand to get my attention. “What about a Halloween party? Or a harvest party?”
“Once we get down there? Sounds like a plan. Sort of a new Thanksgiving.”
She rolled her eyes. “I mean for you, dummy.”
I tilted my head questioningly. “You want me?” I pointed at my chest. “To relax? By planning and throwing a party?”
“You love feeding people,” she pointed out.
My hands went up. “Four or five at a time, yeah! After that, it gets exhausting.”
“There is this fascinating invention,” Alistair started, adding his two cents. “It’s called a potluck, I do believe. Apparently, it occurs when you allow other people to bring dishes to a gathering.” He zoomed on a particular cavern, not even looking at us. “Revolutionary, I know. What will they think of next.”
“Asshole,” I muttered, wiggling down into my chair to sulk.
“Other people can cook, Sophia.”
“Et tu, Hannah?”
Five years ago, she would have flinched from my glare. Now, she just stared back.  It was clear that overexposure had acclimatized her to my wrath. “You let Tyche bake for you all the time.”
“That’s different. I can’t bake. Like, at all.”
“Arthur made goulash that one time. And you let Charly make popcorn.”
Yet again, my assistant felt the need to add insult to injury. “I understand that Mister Rodriguez is quite adept at sugar confections.  And you, yourself, extoll Councilor Kalloe’s aptitude with curries.”
“We could throw Xiomara and Mona together,” Hannah suggested. “Mona will stuff buns with anything given the chance.”  It only took a beat of silence for her to realize what she had said and start glowing red. “Bread buns! Like fluffier bao oh my gods kill me now…”
“Mini curry bread bowls do sound delightful,” Alistair mulled.
“Y’all - “
He kept speaking, ignoring me completely. “I think Farro and I can duel British versus American pigs  in blankets.”
Hannah clapped, despite my attempts to argue. “Oh, that would be fun!  I bet Charly and Coffee can pull together some really interesting dips and sauces.” Her tone dropped just as she clamped a hand over my mouth. “I hear Coffee makes a mean roux.”
“Do you think he can make us a gumbo?”
“How would we make it portable? Hmmm….”
I stood up and stomped my bare foot ineffectually before shouting. “Y’ALL!” They turned to look at me, faces frozen mid-word. Pointing a finger like it was a loaded gun, I started with Alistair. “I know what the hell a potluck is, but a good host should be able to feed the people they invite. Arthur got away with the goulash because he didn’t exactly ask.”
“The boozy donuts didn’t hurt,” Hannah added.
“AND YOU!” I whirled on her. “How am I supposed to ask people who probably can’t even attend to make food or help?  I adore Mona, but she is busy. We all have access to her work allotments and hours, none of us know when she sleeps. I don’t care how good those mini bread bowls sound, if I find out she is making even ONE, I will assign you to BioLab Four so fast you won’t have time for a rebreather.”
She started muttering and I vaguely heard names being listed, but chose to ignore it for the sake of my blood pressure. “And finally: WHY DOES THAT PUFF HAVE A HAT??” I darted across the room to where Else was roughly halfway down the walls now, fingertip less than an inch from a bright yellow ball of fuzz with a bright purple cowboy hat.
“Hat?”
“Puff?”
Both of them stood and inched toward where I was standing, eyes following my arm until they saw what I was focused on. “That’s a hat,” Hannah murmured in a dazed tone.
“I see it as well,” Alistair confirmed.  I couldn’t tell if his confusion was the rapid change in topic or the bizarre sight in front of us. “It is very purple.”
I didn’t want to take the object away, in case it upset Else…. Lately, they’d been known to emit a jarringly high pitched noise when upset. Instead, I stared at it with them, fixated.
“Does Simon have sea urchins?” Hannah finally asked, apropos to literally nothing I could figure out.
“Four?” I answered, curious.
She nodded without taking her eyes off the wall. “Urchins sunburn, and from what I’ve read, wild ones would carry stones or other objects to protect themselves. People who kept pet urchins would make hats for them. Like that.”
I squeezed my eyes shut tightly. “I don’t think I want to know how Else stole a hat from one of Simon’s urchins.”
“Perhaps someone made it for Else, based on similarities?” Alistair suggested.
“No clue,” I admitted.  Finally, I turned from the wall, took a deep breath, and opened my eyes. “Fine. You’re right. We can do the potluck.  It’ll be nice to hang out with everyone and not have to cook everything.”
Immediately, I winced and Else scattered as Hannah started squealing. “This is going to be great! Just you wait and see.”
“No costumes?” I begged.
She gave a small huff. “Fine. No costumes. I can work with that.  Unless Else shows up with hats.”
“The hat is pretty cute,” I conceded.
“Do not inform Miss Harper of that.” Alistair turned and stared at us both. “If I am forced to see even one glittery accoutrement for our fine, fluffy friends, neither of you will ever have a proper cup of coffee again.”
Oh. He meant it.
“Won’t tell Charly,” I hastily promised.
“How the hell are we supposed to keep her from making them without telling her about it?” Hannah hissed at me as soon as his back was turned.
“Fuck if I know,” I responded. “But we’re going to figure this out. My caffeine depends on it.”

Note
What is Ardri exactly? I can't quite visualize him.
Hmm. That’s a fun question. I’d never considered it before, just thinking of him as a generic humanoid Faerie. But I suppose he might fit into some category. Let’s see... He’s the son of a dryad who lives in a Beech Tree and a Faerie who is described as "The spirit of the still pool below the thorn bush”. The latter is likely some kind of water sprite or nixie. It’s worth noting that the nix of Germanic folklore were shapeshifters who could take many forms such as dragons, fish, and even human. And they are related to a number of similar mythological beings from various parts of Europe, such as the Ceffyl Dŵr from Welsh Mythology and the Kelpie from Scottish Myths. Both of these had the power to transform themselves into horses and trample people or drown them by letting them climb onto their backs and then diving down to the bottom of the pool. So we have two Faeries, one a humanoid tree spirit and one who is a spirit that can shapeshift though often takes a humanoid form. It’s not surprising that Ardri’s form is humanoid as well. We could call Ardri an Elf, though he has little connection to the Dökkálfar and the Ljósálfar of Norse mythology. If anything he might be similar to Elfs as they were seen in Middle English and Early Modern Scottish folklore. During the Middle Ages the term Elf became loosely synonymous with the borrowed French word “Fairy”, and the creatures were often conflated with beings like hobgoblins, brownies, dwarves, pucks, and hobs. Sometimes they were human sized, other times they were small. Somewhat connected is the old High German word “Alp” is defined by the Althochdeutsches Wörterbuch (Old High German Dictionary) as a sort of nature god or nature daemon. Another creature he could be is the Irish púca, another nature spirit who could be either benevolent or malevolent depending on its whims. Said to be a Faerie who could shapeshift into all manner of creatures such as a goat, cat, dog, hare, and even a horse. This would not only tie him back to the shape changing Nixies and Nixs of Germanic folklore who could transform their shape as well as the Scottish Kelpie who specifically took a horse form but it also connects him right back to the pucks. (A side note: The Astronomer who fled his court and shed his humanoid form in favor of a rabbit, and dwelt upon deserts of Faerie’s moons, is likely a púca.) Puck you might know from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The name has possible sources in Old Norse (púki) with later variations traveling into Old Swedish, Icelandic, and Frisian. It also is suggested to be connected to Welsh (pwca), Cornish (bucca), and Irish (púca). All of these are suggested to have some linguistic connection through the movement of the word, though scholars disagree on which direction the linguistic borrowing might have gone. Shakespeare identified Puck as a Hobgoblin or hob, and he’s considered a domestic nature sprite, daimon, or fairy. Hobgoblins are houshold spirits or goblins that are very similar to stories of Brownies. Hob is just another name for a rustic countryside goblin. Hobs and Hobgoblins in folklore can be mischievous and cause chaos and hurt, but can also offer aid and do good deeds under the right circumstances. Goblins, hobs, hobgoblins, brownies, boggles, and many more have similar twisted and tied connections such that its impossible to really separate them in older Folklore, though contemporary literature has made many of them into distinct species of Faerie. I’m getting distracted... Diving into Folklore is a rabbit hole that is far too easy to get lost in forever. Your question had to do with the appearance of Ardri. So what is he? If anything he falls into this weird tangle of folklore that often depicts humanoid creatures of various sizes, temperaments, and appearances. He’s clearly related to nature, both the folklore and his mothers make that certain. Personally I think he’s likely to be a Hob, Brownie, or púca. All three had humanoid forms and sizes at one point in folklore, though they diverged in the stories later on. So, Ardri is not only humanoid but is roughly about the size of a human teenager as well, which is why he managed to pass so easily as a human during his two forays into their world. He is somewhere around sixteen or seventeen years of age by human reckoning, the same age as Sam and a little older than Oliver. He’s slightly shorter than your average 17 year old human male, but since human height varies so widely it wouldn’t be noticed much. He is lithe and strong, having spent his youth running through the woods, climbing trees, swimming in the river, and generally being active. His fair skin is slightly freckled from his youth in the sun while his hair is chestnut brown in color and hangs down to his shoulders. His eyes are hazel coloured and depending on the lighting might seem more brown, green, or even gold. Ardri will often have a friendly and enthusiastic smile, though it will occasionally show a light of mischief or laughter. I hope my extensive rambling response answers your question adequately. It’s likely far more than you were expecting to receive. I will admit I got carried away once I began diving in to the different faerie types, but it all made for a very fun evening project.

Back in April I took part in the O.W.L.s Magical Read-a-thon hosted by Book Roast on YouTube. Out of the twelve “exams,” I passed eight of them: Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic, Muggle Studies, Potions, and Transfiguration. Which set me up perfectly for this month’s read-a-thon: the N.E.W.T.s! This was my favorite read-a-thon to participate in last year, and G has just made it bigger and better than ever, and I am so glad I can participate in it again this year.
The career framework that I’m using for the N.E.W.T.s is different from the one I used for the O.W.L.s back in April. Though I could still go for a Charms professor at Hogwarts, I’m actually planning on following the criteria path for a Ministry Worker, specifically for the Department of International Magic Cooperation. Which means I only need to get an Outstanding in one subject — History of Magic — and acceptable in five others: Muggle Studies, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Transfiguration, and Charms.
Since I have a bunch of ARCs that I want to get to over the next few months and start posting reviews again, I’m hoping to combine the N.E.W.T.s with ARC August to see just how much of my ARC backlog I can get through. I’m ridiculously excited for all of the books I want to read this month, so hopefully I can get to most, if not all of them (in a perfect world). I am going to the beach for a week at the end of the month, which means prime reading time. Last year, I read four books while I was on vacation, so hopefully I can repeat that this year.
History of Magic
Out of all of my exams for this round of the N.E.W.T.s, History of Magic is the only one that I have to achieve an “Outstanding” to complete my career path. So did I choose easy books to complete it? Of course not! Why would I be kind to myself like that? However, I’m fairly certain that each of these books are going to be five stars, so I’m not too worried.
ACCEPTABLE: Read a fantasy
A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic: 1): V.E. Schwab
Despite the fact that I own a bunch of V.E. (Victoria) Schwab books, I haven’t read a single one. A Darker Shade of Magic is one of my Top 10 Books to Read in 2019, and I think it’s finally time to dive into some of Schwab’s work.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Read a book that includes a map
Darkdawn (The Nevernight Chronicle: 3): Jay Kristoff Publication date: September 3rd
I’m currently in the middle of reading Godsgrave right now and am falling more in love with this story as I read every page. I cannot believe that I’m lucky enough to have an ARC of this highly anticipated finale, and I can’t wait to read it as soon as I can.
OUTSTANDING: Tom Riddle’s Diary: fond memory — reread a favorite (or a classic)
Wuthering Heights: Emily Brontë
I read Wuthering Heights for the first (and only) time back when I was a sophomore in high school and fell in love with the story. I’ve been meaning to reread this story for ages, especially since so many people I’ve talked to hate this book. I’m interested to see if I still feel the same about the story of Heathcliff and Catherine all these years later.
Muggle Studies
For my chosen career path, I only have to read the book for an acceptable grade for this exam. But I’m a bit extra motivated to get an “Outstanding” in Muggle Studies since one of these books was on my N.E.W.T.s TBR last year and didn’t get it to then, so it must happen this year.
ACCEPTABLE: Cover that includes an actual photo element
The Girl the Sea Gave Back: Adrienne Young Publication date: September 3rd
This one is a complete surprise addition to my TBR this month. But the Netgalley fairies (and the ones at St. Martin’s Press) granted my wish and I can read it early! I’m a sucker for books with a big mythology aspect, so I cannot wait to dive into this one (pun fully intended).
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Book set in our real world
Permanent Record: Mary H.K. Choi Publication date: September 3rd
The world needs more books about college-aged people that aren’t set at a  college, so I’m so excited that I get the chance to read Permanent Record. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Mary H.K. Choi’s last novel, Emergency Contact, so I’m intrigued to see how I like her newest novel.
OUTSTANDING: Book written by a person of color
A Very Large Expanse of Sea: Tahereh Mafi
If you’re having déjà vu reading this, trust me you’re not alone. This isn’t the first TBR that I’ve included A Very Large Expanse of Sea, but I definitely want it to be the last. I saw Tahereh Mafi at Epic Reads Day in July, and hearing her speak about this book and what it meant to her made me want to read it that much more.
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Like with Muggle Studies, I only have to read the book I chose for an “Acceptable” grade to complete the requirements for my chosen career path. However, all three books I’ve chosen for these prompts have been on my TBR for waaaay too long, and I think it’s time to change that.
ACCEPTABLE: Book that’s black under the dust jacket (only one necessary for my chosen career)
Legend (Legend: 1): Marie Lu
Why finish a Marie Lu series when I can keep starting them? Even though I do really want to finish her Warcross and Young Elites series, I do want to try and read her debut series; especially since Rebel, the continuation of this series, comes out in October.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Gilderoy’s memory charm — first book you remembered from your TBR
Heretics Anonymous: Katie Henry
I’ve been dying to read this book since it came out last year. I love books that deal with philosophy and religion, especially if they’re done in a humorous way.
OUTSTANDING: Cornish pixie! Swat it away with a book written by an English author or set in England
Heartstopper, Volume 1: Alice Oseman
So, technically this is a reread for me since I’ve been reading Heartstopper as a webcomic since the beginning. But, I do love this story and Nick and Charlie are just so unbelievably adorable. This will be the perfect book to squeeze between some of my darker fantasies that I hope to read this month to lighten the mood.
Potions
Potions is going to my hardest N.E.W.T. to pass with an “Outstanding” grade. All three books are fantasy over 400 pages each. But, I won’t let that deter me and sometimes a fantasy is just the perfect beach read.
ACCEPTABLE: Polyjuice potion — read your friend’s favorite book
The Princess Bride: William Goldman
Asking my friend Nicole for her favorite book was absolutely terrible. Like most bookworms, she gave me a list of about ten books about twenty minutes after I asked her. Fortunately, I read most of the books that she suggested, with the exception of The Princess Bride. I have seen the movie once and liked it, so I’m interested to see how the book and movie differ. Hopefully it has the same humor as the movie does because that was just pure gold.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: House ingredient –– book with a cover in your Hogwarts house colors (Hufflepuff — yellow & black)
Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove: 1): Shelby Mahurin Publication date: September 3rd
I’ve been in love with this book ever since I saw the cover reveal a couple of months ago. And then I heard Shelby Mahurin speak about the story and fell in love even more. Give me all of the books with a fake dating — in this case a fake marriage — trope.
OUTSTANDING: Book that starts with a prologue
The Chosen (Contender: 1): Taran Matharu
I haven’t read any Taran Matharu before, but this one sounds like a great sci-fi/fantasy book. From the synopsis, I’m getting Matrix vibes and I cannot wait to see how this story unfolds.
Transfiguration
Just like for Potions, in order to complete the tests for my chosen career path, I only have to achieve an “Acceptable.” Also like Potions, the books I chose for these prompts are all dense fantasy; but they’re all stories I’m excited to read.
ACCEPTABLE: Read a book with LGBTQIA+ representation
Girls of Paper and Fire (Girls of Paper and Fire: 1): Natasha Ngan
Just like A Very Large Expanse of Sea, Girls of Paper and Fire has been on multiple previous TBRs. Hopefully, that streak comes to an end this month. I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about this novel, so I really hope I can join in on this bandwagon ASAP.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Read a book that’s not a first in the series
Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle: 3): Maggie Stiefvater
Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly getting through Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle. I’ve loved the first two books in the series, so I’ve been taking my time and savoring every moment. But, since her latest novel, Call Down the Hawk is related to this series (but not a direct sequel), I really want to catch up on this series before November.
OUTSTANDING: McGonagall doesn’t mess around! — Read a book over 500 pages
Angel Mage: Garth Nix Publication date: October 1st
Despite being a huge YA fantasy name, I have yet to read a single Garth Nix book. I am more than ready to finally read something by him, and I think that, since this is a standalone, this is the perfect place to start.
Charms
Out of all of my “exams,” Charms is the only one that I’m pretty confident that I can complete this month. With a graphic novel, a manga, and a short story collection that I need to read and review for a post next month, these books are more likely to happen than any of the others on this entire list.
ACCEPTABLE: A book with a gorgeous cover
His Hideous Heart: 13 of Edgar Allan Poe’s Most Unsettling Tales Reimagined: Dahlia Adler [Editor] Publication date: September 10th
I’m not a big anthology fan, but I’m ridiculously excited for this one. Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite authors of all time, so I cannot wait to see how his stories and themes are reimagined and interpreted.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Read a comic/graphic novel/manga (or a book under 150 pages)
Dreamin’ Sun, Vol. 9: Ichigo Takano
I don’t read much manga, but when I do it’s one of three series. There are only two volumes of Dreamin’ Sun left and I’m so sad to see this series end.
OUTSTANDING: Spongify (softening charm) — Read a paperback book
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me: Mariko Tamaki & Rosemary Valero-O’Connell
Just from flipping through this book, I know I’m going to love it in part just because the art is stunning. Stories about difficult relationships, especially in YA fiction, are always something I’m looking for, so I can’t wait to read this one.
Because I’m an overachiever, I hope to “pass” the other N.E.W.T.s that I can sit this year — Charms, Arithmancy, and Care of Magical Creatures. I make no promises, but after the past few decent reading months, I’m having a good feeling about August.
Arithmancy
ACCEPTABLE: Book that ends on an even page number
Frankly in Love: David Yoon Publication date: September 10th
I will say this every time, but I LOVE FAKE DATING TROPES AND I WILL ALWAYS READ THEM.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Read a standalone
Jackpot: Nic Stone Publication date: October 15th
I am so so so glad that I have an ARC of this book. I loved Nic Stone’s Dear Martin, and she’s such a fantastic person. I love her voice, and I cannot wait to read another one of her stories.
OUTSTANDING: Book that’s longer than 350 pages
The Beautiful (The Beautiful: 1): Renée Ahdieh Publication date: October 8th
Vampires are back in YA literature; we are thriving in 2019, ladies and gentlemen. I’ve only read one of Renée Ahdieh’s books before, but I loved her writing style and structure, so I can’t wait to see how that translates to vampiric 1870s New Orleans.
Care of Magical Creatures
ACCEPTABLE: Follow the spiders! — Book title that starts with the letter ‘A’ for Aragog!
Ash: Malinda Lo
I literally scoured my shelves, and this is the only book that I have that starts with ‘A’ that I haven’t read already. I only picked this up a few months ago, but I’m always game for a fairytale retelling, especially when it’s a LGBTQIA+ retelling.
EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS: Book under 300 pages
Girls on the Verge: Sharon Briggs Waller
Ever since I watched Chelsea from chelseadolling reads on YouTube rave about this book months ago, I’ve wanted to read this book. Even though it’s a short book, I have a feeling this is going to be a difficult read, but so very worth it.
OUTSTANDING: Grab onto Fawkes’ tail! — Read a book with a bird on the cover
Black Wings Beating (Skybound: 1): Alex London
I don’t know much about this book other than it’s a LGBTQIA+ fantasy. But, I’ve also heard nothing but good things about this book from those who have read it. Since the sequel is coming out soon, hopefully I can jump on this train quickly and pick up the sequel, too.
It's August, so you know what that means....time for the N.E.W.T.s! I'm so pumped for all the books on my TBR this month. With luck, I'll pass all my exams needed to be a Ministry Worker! Check out my #NEWTSReadathon2019 TBR here: Back in April I took part in the O.W.L.s Magical Read-a-thon hosted by Book Roast on YouTube…

It's always great when you circle back to a book you loved growing up and find it just as good as you remember. There aren't many books targeting children in their early teens that age well (as in, are still enjoyable for an adult) - a lot of the series I grew up reading were engaging at the time but now just feel horribly simplified. There are others though that deal with really deep themes, whose authors have a real gift for taking those themes and teasing out meaningful stories from them, and every time I come back to them I find something new in them to treasure. I keep meaning to make a list and forgetting, but the ones that come to mind now are: - Sabriel, by Garth Nix (which I'm re-reading now) - The Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander - especially the penultimate book, Taran Wanderer - The Farseer trilogy, by Robin Hobb - The Earthsea tetralogy, by Ursula Le Guin - The Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy, by D. M. Cornish - Maybe some of the Discworld books? But definitely not others. Mort and friends probably belong here.
There are probably others that belong on this list, but that I haven't re-read recently enough to judge well - probably some by Tamora Pierce? Or the Tales of the Otori?

Urban Fantasy Recommendation Masterpost
This is a list of the urban fantasies I’ve enjoyed most over the years, split down a few lines and to be updated as I discover new series. I’m also including contemporary fantasies because the lines often blur. Hope you find something you like on it!
$ for LGBT characters £ for characters of colour € for characters with disabilities * for potentially problematic depictions of the above ! for #ownvoices (all based on my slightly spotty memory, so feel free to correct if I’ve missed something)
World-Focused
or stories that spend most of their time steeping you in the magical world
American Gods - Neil Gaiman £
Shadow Moon gets out of jail and is hired by the cagey Mr. Wednesday to … he’s not really clear, honestly, but it puts him in the path of people who may or may not be gods. Multiple mythologies.
Among Others - Jo Walton €!
A 1980s teen flees her troubled home in Wales to get to know her birth father and attend an English boarding school. Is her mother’s family able to work magic or is it just wishful thinking? Reading science fiction might give her the answers. British folklore and faeries, and a very interesting take on magic.
The Boggart - Susan Cooper
A Canadian family inherits a Scottish castle inhabited by a mischievous boggart—who then stows away and finds himself in Toronto. Scottish folklore.
The Bone Clocks - David Mitchell £
The life of a woman from teen-hood to old age as she lives her life and occasionally intersects with an ancient war between good and evil, fought with telepathy and other things that look a lot like magic.
The Changeling - Victor Lavalle £ !
After his infant son is violently attacked, Apollo Kagwa, used bookseller, descends into the hidden world of New York in search of his vanished wife.
The City We Became - N.K. Jemisin - $ £ ! for race
New York City, newly alive, is being attacked, and six humans, no longer quite human, must do everything in their power to save their city.
the Dark is Rising series - Susan Cooper €*
A group of English kids—four siblings, a seventh son, and a boy who might be a reincarnated Arthur—versus the forces of darkness. Five books, only the last of which includes all the kids. Cornish and English folklores, Arthuriana.
Gods Behaving Badly - Marie Phillips
The Greek pantheon now lives in North London and is as dysfunctional as ever. Artemis walks dogs. Aphrodite does phone sex. Apollo is a washed-out TV psychic who’s just fallen, via Eros, for the cleaning lady—who’s trying to date someone else, thank you very much. Greek mythology.
The Golem and the Jinni - Helene Wecker £
A golem and a jinni both find themselves in turn-of-the-century New York, both literally and figuratively. A beautiful exploration of the immigrant experience, friendship, and identity. Jewish and Arabic folklore.
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
A mostly-good angel and mostly-wicked demon discover they’ve been training the wrong Antichrist days before the scheduled apocalypse. The real Antichrist wants a dog and to save the whales. Also features a legacy witch, a rookie witch-finder, the Four Horsemen, the Four Other Horsemen, Satanic nuns, and a Queen soundtrack. Christian mythology.
The Hunter’s Moon - O.R. Melling
A Canadian teen visiting her Irish cousin ends up mounting a cross-country road trip to retrieve her cousin who’s run off with the faeries. Irish mythology.
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London - Garth Nix $£
In the summer of 1983, Susan Arkshaw travels to London to find her birth father. What she discovers is a family of magical booksellers, and an Old World that’s very much alive.
Middlegame - Seanan McGuire
Roger and Dodger are exceptionally gifted, telepathically linked, and a little more than natural. James Reed will stop at nothing to use them, or people like them, to get ultimate power. Alchemy, time travel, and portal fantasies are involved.
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman £
Richard Mayhew has it all: a good job, a hot fiancée, a nice flat. Then he helps an apparently homeless girl with the power to create doors and is pulled into the magical community below London. Nothing will ever be the same.
Of Blood and Honey and And Blue Skies From Pain - Stina Leicht
It’s tough, living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, and Liam finds it harder than most. No one trusts him, he can’t find work, everyone wants him to choose a side, and to cap it off, he feels like a monster is inside him and knows something inhuman is stalking him and his. The war between the Fey and the Fallen is heating up, and the only people keeping peace are an order of priests—who also, surprise, want Liam’s help. Irish and Christian mythology.
The Sixth World series - Rebecca Roanhorse $£€ !
Maggie Hoskie is a Monsterslayer of Dinétah, but she’d rather not be. Even rescuing a kidnapped girl is supposed to be a one-shot deal. But the monster’s a new one, an apprentice medicine man’s attached himself to her, and Coyote’s around, so of course it’s not that simple. Navajo mythology.
Son of a Trickster - Eden Robinson £€ !
Jared’s life sucks. He’s sixteen, living in a crap house in a crap town with crap prospects. He’s paying his dad’s rent with weed money. His mom’s more interested in parties than holding down a job. His only friend’s a pit bull. And just when he thinks that’s as low as it gets, a raven shows up and say he’s Jared’s real dad. Heiltsuk (and other First Nations) mythology and folklore.
Sparrow Hill Road - Seanan McGuire
Rose Marshall, the Phantom Prom Date, the Ghost of Sparrow Hill Road, hitches her way from coast to coast while dealing with paranormal problems and route witches—and avoiding Bobby Cross, the immortal who killed her.
Sunshine - Robin McKinley
Rae is a baker. Tough and practical and smart, but a baker. Who’s just rescued herself and a vampire from captivity using magic she’d half-forgotten she had. Unfortunately, the master vampire’s still after them, the magical police know something’s up, and she just wants to keep being normal. Includes mild, realistic PTSD and a whole lot of delicious desserts.
An Unkindness of Magicians - Kat Howard
The Turning has started in New York and every magician in the city has their own reason for entering the tournament—power, status, acknowledgement, revenge, revolution. The high stakes would be enough for anyone, but it’s starting to look like there’s something suddenly wrong with magic, too.
Witches of Ash and Ruin - E. Latimer - $ £ € *
Dayna wants to be a witch, live her life, and block her OCD thoughts so she doesn’t have to deal with them. Then scary but gorgeous Meiner and her coven roll into town prophesying Bad Things, and a serial killer reappears who seems to target witches and shit. Meet. Fan. Themes of family and abuse.
Ysabel - Guy Gavriel Kay
Ned Marriner’s tagging along with his photographer dad to Provence when he begins to notice magic awakening around him. There’s an ancient love triangle that‘s repeated throughout history, using contemporary locals as proxies—and it’s very interested in Ned, his new friend Kate, and his father’s entourage.
Mystery-Focused
or stories that spend most of their time solving a magical crime
The Arcadia Project series - Mishell Baker $£€ !
Millie’s nearly broke, scarred, a double amputee, mentally ill, and Done with all the BS around that. She’s also despairing of ever resuming her directing career, so when a mysterious woman offers her a job with her temp agency, she’s intrigued. What wasn’t mentioned? She’ll actually be an immigration agent working with the Fae of Hollywood, and one of them’s just gone missing.
the Blood series - Tanya Huff $£€
Vicky Nelson is the pinnacle of the tough, no-nonsense PI—which poses a bit of a problem when she’s hired to catch a “vampire” on the streets of Toronto and then actually meets one. (He writes romance novels.)
the Felix Castor series - Mike Carey $*
Felix Castor is an exorcist. A hard-drinking, down-at-the-heels exorcist in a London brimming with ghosts and demons. Unfortunately, he never seems to get the easy cases where he can just waltz in and play a tune—and his past mistakes might be coming back to haunt him.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Long, Dark Tea-Time of the Soul - Douglas Adams
Dirk Gently solves mysteries by wandering around, getting into strange situations, and then connecting dots no one believes even exist. Like time traveling robots and Romantic poets, or rampaging eagles and mold-ridden refrigerators.
The Grendel Affair - Lisa Shearin £
Makenna Fraser is a seer working for Supernatural Protection and Investigations in New York. “Seer” meaning she can spot the ghoulies and ghosties few people can, including her coworkers. When an off-the-books gnome removal turns into a blood-soaked crime scene, she and her partner are handed the case—but will her eagerness to prove herself just land her in hotter water?
the Greta Helsing series - Vivian Shaw $£
Dr. Greta Helsing serves the undead of London. Her best friends are vampires and demons. The boundaries between worlds are thinning, causing all manner of metaphysical trouble. Plays with 1800s horror classics; equal parts sensible, disturbing, and funny.
the Greywalker series - Kat Richardson $£
Harper Blaine prides herself on rationality and unflappability, but after briefly dying on a case, she’s suddenly wrong-footed and seeing ghosts everywhere. In the middle of all that, she’s hired by a mysterious voice to track down an organ that’s more than it seems, and suddenly haunted street corners are the least of her problems.
the Incryptid series - Seanan McGuire $£
Meet the Price family, a close-knit group of cryptozoologists whose mission is to protect and preserve endangered cryptids like dragons, gorgons, and the religious Aeslin mice from humans. They’re also hiding from the Covenant of St. George, a.k.a. why the cryptids are endangered in the first place. Technically paranormal romance.
the Iron Druid series - Kevin Hearne £
Atticus O’Sullivan is a herbalist and seller of New Age paraphernalia by day, two-thousand-year-old druid by night. He thought moving to Arizona would keep him safe from gods bent on revenge. He thought wrong. Multiple mythologies.
Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge - Paul Krueger $£€ !
Bailey Chen is fresh out of business school, broke, and living with her parents. When a childhood friend offers her a job as a barback, she takes it as a stopgap—but then she discovers the secret cabal of bartenders who fight demons using magical cocktails and after that, there’s no looking back.
Moonshine - Alaya Johnson £
Zephyr Hollis, a charity worker and ESL teacher in 1920s New York, and therefore flat broke, takes a side job from a student, Amir, without asking questions. But will the vampire mob, the drug-crazed vamps, Amir’s literal smoking hotness, or her family history do her in first?
Night Owls - Lauren M. Roy $
Valerie is a vampire with a successful campus bookstore. Elly grew up fighting monsters and fearing for her life. When their paths collide via a book in Elly’s keeping, they must unite to prevent said monsters from unleashing hell and then some.
the October Daye series - Seanan McGuire $£€
Toby Daye wants sleep, coffee, and for everyone to leave her alone already—not necessarily in that order. Unfortunately, as a changeling Knight and PI with a knack of finding people and solving problems with maximum chaos, none of those things will ever be easy to come by. Multiple folklores.
the Olympus Bound series - Jordanna Max Brodsky $£
Selene di Silva’s been keeping her head down for a long time, shutting herself off not just from New York, but from the world. (Being a former goddess will do that.) But then she stumbles on the body of a woman who’s been ritually sacrificed and her past as Artemis comes rising up again. Greek and Roman mythology
the Rivers of London series - Ben Aaronovitch $£€
When Constable Peter Grant meets a ghost at a crime scene, it’s only logical for him to take a witness statement. When DCI Thomas Nightingale learns of this, he offers him a job as an auror the sorcerer’s apprentice a valued member of a magically-focused police unit. London, its river goddesses, various magic workers, assorted Fae, and the Metropolitan Police will never be the same.
the Shadow Police series - Paul Cornell $£
Following the mysterious death of a suspect, four Metropolitan Police officers are drawn into London’s sinister magical underworld in their hunt for a killer.
the Smoke series - Tanya Huff $*£
Tony Foster’s found his footing as a PA on a Vancouver-shot vampire show. Unfortunately, the paranormal weirdness that is his life continues and it’s somehow up to him to save the day.
Unholy Ghosts (and following) - Stacia Kane £*
Chess Putnam works as a Church exorcist, partly out of obligation and partly for the pay, which goes to fuel her drug addiction. Unfortunately, no ghosts are nice ghosts and her private life keeps intruding on her cases.
the Watch novels - Terry Pratchett
Ankh-Morpork is the citiest of fantasy cities. Its City Watch is a bunch of misfits. Sam Vimes isn’t putting up with any nonsense. Somehow, they fight crime.
Zoo City - Lauren Beukes £

Hamefura x Pokémon AU: Other Teams Part 2
Part 2 of what Pokémon some others characters have, this time covering the people not mentioned in Part 1.
Thank you @dulcito-on-ao3, @logo-comics, and @thecagedsong for your suggestions.
Sienna Nelson
Starly/Staravia/Staraptor - First Pokémon - @dulcito-on-ao3 suggested Normal/Flying types and I agree they fit. Especially that Flying-Types match with her Wind Magic.
Jigglypuff - according to @logo-comics, Sienna deserves this cute Pokémon.
Kai Gerran
Honehege - because he is a sword fighting teacher
Absol - @thecagedsong suggested this based on @dulcito-on-ao3‘s idea of him having really bad luck of accidentally drawing the jealous attention of powerful men.
Escavalier - because he was part of a knight order. @dulcito-on-ao3‘s suggestion. Any other knight-themed Pokémon could also work.
Fray Randall
Hatterene - First Pokémon - a cute and elegant-looking Psychic-Type fits her so well. @logo-comics suggestion
Roselia - because it feels right to associate her with flowers like that. @logo-comics suggestion
Pidgeotto - a Flying-Type to fit her Wind Magic, also it represents her admiration of Larna Smith, who has a Pidgeot.
Ginger Tucker
Eevee/Jolteon - First Pokémon - because a Lightning-Type is perfect for a tsundere. Her father gave her an Eevee as a sign of favoritism after her Magic awakened, giving her siblings another reason to dislike her. @logo-comics suggestion.
Taillow - A Flying-Type to match her Wind Magic.
Marsha Catley
Marrill - First Pokémon - I headcanon Marsha as a Water Mage so a cute Water-Type fits her.
Beedrill - according to @logo-comics it fits her
Tom Wisley
Maractus -  to suit his seemingly imposing nature and general kindness. @logo-comics suggestion
Joanna
Indeedee ♀ - like most maids
Gothitelle - this Pokémon is described as detached which I guess fits with Joanna’s initial intimidating attitude. @logo-comics suggestion.
Cyrus Lancaster
Raticate - First Pokémon - he caught it when he was younger, since he grew up on a farm without much to his family's name and Rattata is a very common Pokemon. @logo-comics suggestion.
Boring farm Pokémon like Flaaffy or Wooloo. @thecagedsong suggestion.
Jirachi - everyone gives him credit and acclaim for the Jirachi, (kinda of like how, amazing, he's so strong and talented in magic) but really Jirachi just likes his Raticate and lets Cyrus be his trainer to stay close to his crush. It good for reflecting how Cyrus really doesn't fit in with noble society, despite holding high prominence in it. @thecagedsong suggestion.
Dewey Percy
Lopunny -  it matches his nature as a Tsundere and would be funny to see in general. @logo-comics suggestion.
Guy “Laura” Handerson
Bellossom - it’s what they deserve. @logo-comics suggestion.
Nathan Hart
Abra -  "it will be able to teleport him back town after he gets lost" they thought. Except he got the one Abra who gets as lost as he does. Occasionally his Abra comes out of his pokeball and will teleport Nathan. There is nothing anyone can do. The bonds of pokemon are sacred. Nathan never talks about where his Abra takes him. @thecagedsong suggestion.
Nix Cornish
Quaquaval - I feel that this Pokémon fits his flamboyant attitude.
Dartrix - this Pokémon is described as narcissistic which also describes Nix.
Lisa Norman
Zigzagoon - a reference to her racoon puppet which is now a Zigzagoon puppet. She does the ventriloquist thing with both the Pokémon and the puppet.
Caesar Dahl
Ursaring - His only Pokémon - Caught as a Teddiursa during his days as a mercenary with the one pokeball he got as a gift from the royal side of his family. Something powerful and wild, not something he can show easily to a crowd, just like he feels like his true self needs to be muted in order to help his half brother as a noble. The golden ring on Ursaring fits his golden eyes. @thecagedsong suggestion
Marquis Edmund Randall
Hypno - I can just see him using this Pokémon to try to brainwash his children into obedience. It does not work because their own Psychic-Types protect them.
Lord Coleman (Keith’s biological father)
Some Ground and Rock-Types. He only sees Pokémon as useful for his status. He does not mistreat them but doesn’t see them as friends.
Thomas Coleman
Tried showing off by buying rare Pokémon; he doesn’t bother to train them, always relying on items; he abuses his Pokémon, meaning theya re not loyal to him.
Mary’s sisters
A mix of cute and pretty Pokémon, mostly grass-types but any adorable, not-always fully evolved Pokémon works. They are more interested in contests and showcases than battles. I suddenly have this idea of these three putting on shows like Misty’s sisters.
Mothim, Beautifly, and Vivilillion - less powerful but matching and beautiful butterfly Pokémon. Strong against Mary's grass-types and purposefully excluding her. @thecagedsong suggestion.
