can we just talk about following quinn around while he’s golfing for a min? all of this content of him playing golf is getting to me soooo bad
like, he’d always ask you to tag along with him and drive the cart for him, just wanting to spend time with you. it’s definitely not because he loves to see you wear your little golf skirt and canucks visor.
you would say no most of the time, not wanting to go ride around in the hot sun all day when you could stay in your air conditioned apartment and watch reality shows. when the weather turns, though, you’ll grace him with your presence every once in awhile.
you especially like to go when he’s playing with his teammates. you loved being his cheerleader and subtly sabotaging his teammates. like the time they asked you to hold the flag while they putted, and you “accidentally” hit quinn’s ball in the hole with the pole.
or the time brock tagged along and you blew the horn on the golf cart just as he was putting for a birdie, causing his ball to sail right past the hole, rolling right off of the green entirely. when he looked over at you, face red and angry, you claimed innocence. “what? i was thirsty and needed to get the cart girl’s attention. how was i supposed to know that was an important putt?”
you always had the most fun when all three hughes brothers were golfing together. you would drive quinn around in a cart while jack and luke had their own. and, occasionally, ellen and jim would join too. ellen and yourself would sit and chit chat while the boys and jim were on the green, teasing each other and not playing by official golf rules in the slightest.
ellen would always pack a cooler with snacks and a light lunch for everyone to have while on the course. the whole group would find a shady spot right off of the course and eat, giving the guys an opportunity to make wagers and bets on who would win and what the others would have to endure if they lost.
usually the punishments were lighthearted and harmless, but every once in awhile one arises that causes some trouble. like the time jack had to jump into one of the small ponds on a course when you were all on vacation together in hawaii, resulting in a lifetime ban for every single one of you when he got caught.
you enjoyed when it was just you and quinn, too. the days that a cool breeze was constantly flowing and you would bring along a book. quinn would let you choose the music that flows through the clip on speaker attached to the cart, knowing you always have a new playlist you’re wanting to show him. he’d buy you a cocktail to sip on throughout the day, knowing how much you loved a fruity drink.
quinn’s favorite part of you tagging along was knowing you were there because he asked you to be. even though you hated golf and claimed it was the most boring sport ever created, you went simply because he wanted you to be there and you knew it was something he enjoyed. he loved being able to look over and hear your little cheers for him every time he putts the ball into the hole. or the way you always say “sounded like a hole in one to me” after the initial stroke at every new hole.
he loved that every time the cart girl drove by, you always made sure he had a fresh beer if he wanted one. he also loved how you’d trade out the beer for water around hole 12, making sure he’s not getting too crazy since he’s the driver in the relationship (other than at the course, of course).
quinn would offer to teach you to play nearly every time you went with him, but after trying to hit a ball or two you always gave up, telling him it’s much more fun to watch him play than having to focus on anything other than how good his ass looks in his pants when he’s putting, considering that’s the real reason you agree to go with him. but what quinn doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

bear with me but uhm
we can’t be friends by ariana grande is so. like. best friend reader x hockey player/best friend! gaz during their collegiate years
just the overflowing pining and the “he can’t possibly like me…” moments with your friends while you all stay up late at night, trying to study for your midterms.
and your friends tell you—because they know—that no, you’re totally wrong because kyle absolutely can—because he does—like you. but your doubts continue to bloat, and how could they not build when kyle’s being scouted for the damn junior leagues, and he’s soaring heights you can’t reach because you’re stuck here, left behind, and you just.
you love him so much.
he is everything good in your life. everything that is beautiful.
he fills you up with so much joy and love, and he is so gentle and careful and tender, but also so full of silliness and boyish charm as he pranks you and fucks with your brother, tugging you two out of your slumps—for separate reasons—and is so patient when your minds continue to fight back.
kyle tucks himself beside you when it’s off-seasons, helping you with the courses that you find the hardest. he is so warm beside you on those days, and you burn from within because the words you want to say tickle the back of your throat, building, almost spilling, until—
“i got drafted for the juniors!” he yells, laughing, hoisting you up in his arms, deaf to your shrieks.
and.
and time pauses, it stills, because kyle is taking off, leaving you.
“holy shit,” you say, giddy despite the cold dread of your loneliness creeping down from the base of your neck to the plane of your spine. “holy shit, kyle, that’s so- i’m so-”
his eyes are bright, warm, full of unbridled joy, and his cheeks are round in his smile.
you breathe in, forcing the dread out of your chest because— “i’m so proud of you, kyle,” you say, and you mean it.
despite the fear and the anxiety of being separated from him, you truly are so, so proud of him.
he hugs you close and you pretend that the tremors overtaking your body is because of your excitement.

Eddie had heard plenty of stories about Steve losing fights.
He had the concussions to prove it.
But what Eddie saw with his own two eyes was far more impressive than whatever version of Steve had let Jonathan Byers and Billy Hargrove win.
He’d seen how quick he was to defend the kids, defend Nancy and Robin, even defend Eddie when he barely knew him. He’d thrown himself head first into the mix, nail bat in hand or not.
So when Eddie asked about it, Steve shrugged it off.
“Everyone loses fights.”
Sure, everyone does. But he’s seen Steve win against literal alternate dimension monsters.
No way a human teenage boy or two could be harder to beat.
But he let it go. If Steve insisted on it being a couple of genuine losses, so be it.
But Eddie doesn’t let things go. Especially not when it comes to Steve.
“I guess I just don’t understand how you lost to Jonathan. I mean had he ever even been in a fight before?”
“No. But neither had I.”
“But you should’ve won that fight with no effort. No offense to Jonathan, but he’s scrawny and doesn’t even punch right.”
“I don’t know. Why are you so hung up on this?”
Well, because this wasn’t simple. Eddie could tell Steve was hiding something, he just didn’t know what.
“I guess because no one else ever asked you.”
Steve stared at him, probably trying to figure out how to avoid answering.
“No one seems to ever ask you about you.”
Steve looked down at the floor.
“They don’t need to.”
“You deserve to have people care. So I’m gonna care for now and then I’m gonna have a chat with your idiot kids about relational reciprocity.”
“What?”
“They have to show they care about you as much as you care about them. That’s kind of the deal with friendship.”
“Oh.”
Oh? Did Steve genuinely not know that?
Jesus Christ.
“So?”
“I think I just wasn’t good at fighting.”
“Nah. That’s not it.”
Eddie could see Steve thinking.
When he finally spoke, he wasn’t making eye contact. Eddie reached his hand out towards his face, cupping his chin and lifting his face so he had to look at him.
“Try again, Stevie.”
Steve took in a shaky breath.
“I wasn’t good at fighting for me.”
Eddie nodded. “Why’s that?”
“Just didn’t seem like I deserved to win. I deserved the hits I got.”
“Why?”
“Because I was awful. I said shitty things or did shitty things. Or with Billy, I knew I had to let him take it out on me and I guess I thought I deserved it. I dunno.”
“Mm.”
He released Steve’s chin, watching as his head dropped back down and he seemed to curl in on himself.
Eddie couldn’t allow that to happen.
So he pulled Steve into his lap, smirking to himself just a little when he let out a yelp of surprise at the manhandling.
“So all this time, you’ve put your body and mind and future on the line for everyone else without a second thought, but when you had to protect yourself and only yourself, it’s not worth the effort? Am I understanding correctly?”
Steve didn’t respond, but then again, Eddie hadn’t really expected him to. He was too busy hiding his face in Eddie’s chest.
“That’s what I thought. So who taught you that you’re not worth fighting for? Who told you that anything you’ve done wrong should be considered a debt owed to whoever wanted to raise their fists? Who made you believe that your mistakes could only be absolved if you let them get punched out of you?”
Steve was crying; He could feel the cold wetness seeping through his shirt.
“You tell me who it was and I’ll make sure they know how it feels to lose a fight.”
“Just me.”
“I don’t think that’s true.”
He let Steve sit with the words for a few minutes before speaking again.
“You did some not great things as a teenager, as many teenagers tend to do. Have you seen the way Mike talks to people? He’s a shithead. But do you think he deserves to get concussed from a punch to the temple?”
Steve shook his head.
“Dustin gets an attitude anytime we don’t immediately bend to his will and calls us names all the time. Do you think he deserves to get a plate smashed over his head?”
“Of course not.”
Steve’s voice was quiet.
“You have more than made up for any mistakes you may have made in the past, even without the punches being thrown at you. If I have to tell you that you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect every day, then I fucking will. Hear me?”
“Hear you.”
Steve was staring at Eddie, tears still silently and rapidly falling down his cheeks.
Eddie wiped them away and gave him a small smile.
“You have no idea how special you are. But that’s gonna change.”
“Okay.”
Eddie placed a kiss on his forehead before he wrangled him against his chest again, moving his legs so he could relax completely.
“Just relax, okay? I got you. You’re worth protecting.” Eddie sighed softly. “You’re worth everything.”

jake oettinger postgame   —   DAL vs VGK;   game 4   —   04.29.24
[ah, you know ty very well. how hard is it to stay focused throughout everything he’s been through?] yeah, it’s … you know, there’s no one in here that deserves that more than him, and, you know — i live with him, so, i get to see … i’ve been through, you know, everything that he’s gone through this year, and, just, the way that he carries himself, and — you know, there’s no one that puts the team more in first than him and he works his butt off and never has a bad attitude and has just stayed ready for when he got his name called, and played great tonight and, you know, showed that he can step in and, and be a great piece to this team. so, you know, there’s not a lot of people that are gonna be happier for him than me, that’s for sure.
[i was gonna say, the body language that he shows, just when he’s out there – first one on the ice – i mean, he does all the little things you’re supposed to do to show that you’re a big member of the team, even when he goes, whatever, six, eight games without playing.] exactly. and you’d never know … you know, some guys, you know, carry the way that they’re playing on the ice on their face and you’d never know with him. he’s just, you know — puts the team first, wants what’s best for the team, and, you know, he knows when his number’s called he’s gonna step up. and he’s done that. and, uh, like i said, just so happy for him. and there’s tons of guys in our organization who’re like that, you know, just — everyone wants to win, and you know, not everyone’s going to have the exact role that they want but, you know, if you win the championship at the end of the day it doesn’t matter.
[just for color, here — you and ty share a house, a condo?] he lives at my house. me and my fiancée’s house, yeah. yep. [does he pay rent?]  uh, we’re still working through that (laughs) yeah. he’s, uh, he’s been on dish duty, so, that’s kinda how he’s paying for his rent right now. [let’s say, maybe give him a little break off — get a goal, you know, goal’s count.] yeah, for sure. for sure, yeah, exactly.  [and, just for color, what type of jersey does your brother wear?] he wears delly’s jersey. yeah, i know — second favorite player, yeah.

hockey needs confessionals. not typical player robot soundbites. but i want them sitting with a bad green screen background in the middle of a game like
“and then, get this, he tells me i need to get some mouthwash! you believe that shit? like, buddy, if you’re that close to my mouth maybe YOU’RE the problem!”
“like he literally bit me. who does that? who bites someone? he’s crazy. and with a father like his, i don’t even know why i’m surprised!”
“you know i’m lining up for a face off against him and it’s really awkward, okay, because i mean. half of this league has slept with him or dreamt about it at least, right? not to call him a slut but if the shoe fits. so obviously i lose the face off,”
