The Inexhaustible Silence of Houses by Askance (@doomcountry)
You might remember that this was my third of fourth bind ever a hundred years ago (almost exactly a year lol), and as I've learned more skills over the years I've always wanted to have a do-over. So anywho I set this one on fire. Definitely give the fic a read, but mind the tags and warnings! More shots under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you remember the first time I bound this then you'll remember the innards. Nothing changed about the ornaments, however I did increase the line spacing and decrease the font size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some quick shots of how I made the case. I traced the mirrored text onto the back of the cloth, and cut it out using a utility knife. After that I singed it was a lighter, and let some spots get a little too toasty. Using acrylic paint and a curve stencil, I dry brushed the smoke onto the cloth (which was actually a lot of fun!). Using more acrylic paint, I dry brushed black and metallic pewter paint onto some distressed pieces of gray paper.
If yall have any questions about the process, let me know! Thanks for looking, and to doomcountry again for letting me bind them a copy!

If there's one take-away I want to make clear about ruining your career by pettily review-bombing other writers, it's that traditional publishing is not a competition you can win. You have no control over how well your sales do versus someone else's sales. No amount self-promotion, hard work, and social media is going to guarantee a viral tweet, a Booktok sensation, or rave reviews. Those are beyond your control.
In this, your fellow authors are not your rivals, but your peers. If you are not super rich or well-connected, you will be reliant on connections you have to communities that know and trust you, and this is far more important than anything you do on your own. The publishing world is quite small, and these relationships will be a boon in building your future opportunities as well as helping other writers. The industry, in fact, relies on selling books with similar themes at the same time, because they know readers who like one Greek-inspired fantasy will likely pick up another one. That's how publishing trends work!
Publishing is never going to be free from drama or interpersonal-driven conflict. Review-bombing is going to continue, driven by political or ideological agendas. But treating what should be a professional career as some sort of winner-takes-all Squid Game is going to blow up in your face the moment you're caught out, and it will ruin your career before it even begins.

What do you mean the irl Edogawa Ranpo was gay. What do you mean he traveled with his boyfriend researching the history of homosexuality in Japan. What do you mean they had a competition on who could find the most books about gay sex. WHAT DO YOU MEAN-

It’s maddening to find out that the scholar who first developed the idea that “Zionism is Settler Colonialism”, Fayez Sayegh, was a member of the Syrian Nazi Party during and immediately after the Holocaust, was an active participant in the Red Scare, using it to demonize Israel as a manifestation of a Global Communist Threat™️ through the height of the Cold War (true to his Nazi roots, accusing Israel of Judeo-Bolshevism) before switching to a Colonialism narrative when Post-Colonialism came in vogue in the 60s. And yet, the people I hear parroting the talking points of this anti-Communist, Ultranationalist Fascist-turned-scholar are the people who are constantly talking about how Liberal Progressives aren’t Communist enough and actually enemies because “Liberals will always side with Fascists”. Maddening.
If you’ve ever noticed how the “Zionism = Settler Colonialism” narrative eerily shares the core components of the far right’s Replacement Theory (that there are 1. Jews 2. conspiring to invade a given place and 3. replace the population with Jews), this is why; it’s because the idea that Zionism is Settler Colonialism came from a literal Nazi.
It is very literally Nazi propaganda.

The first installment of my new werewolf-western-horror-romance comic is available now on gumroad and itch.io!
www.darlincomic.com
90 pages, mature readers only.
DARLIN’ is intended for mature audiences. This comic contains elements which some readers may find distressing, including:
murder, gun violence, animal cruelty and animal death, blood, gore, body injury/horror, nudity, and language.
Please proceed mindfully.
Title designs by Binglin Hu.
(Thank you to friends, family, patrons and readers for your patience and support during the making of Part 1!
I also want to give my immense thanks to Tin House, Mineral School Artist Residency, Artist Trust and MacDowell for providing time, space and support during various stages of Part 1’s progress. It means the world to receive validation for this weird little self-published project.)

you might be asking, why, fay? why did you print out an entire 53k fic for a video game you've never played? well you see, if you read it, you would understand.

El Dorado and Peregrine by @nigeltde-fic
Very excited to finally have these two incredible stories on my shelves, and grateful to the author for having written them. Some extra glamour shots and writing below the cut like always
Tumblr media
The bookcloth is plain linen bookcloth that I've painted with gold and bronze fabric paint and set with an iron. I struggled for a while to decide what materials this should be done with, and ran some experiments that all kind of blew up in my face lol. Sometimes the tried and true is such for a reason.

The top endbands are sewn with a single strand of satin finish cotton sewing thread, around a worsted weight cotton yarn core coated with PVA glue. The bottom, 'golden' endbands are sewing with a single strand of yellow polyester thread, so that it can be kinda shiny looking.
And a cheeky little video to show the insides, including original art. The fonts used were Century for the main body, and Calfine for the decorative. Thanks for lookin!

watching your journey writing, illustrating, and trying to publish your insane (compliment) gay knight wizard shenanigans book has been... truly beautiful. I have never seen someone write a book that fast or be this enthusiastic about query letter rejections, which is a strange but wondrous change of pace
I read this book that had 79 agent rejections (John Crow's Devil, really loved it!), and the guy talked about how he'd become so viscerally upset upon counting them up that he'd destroyed every copy of his manuscript, and later (after calming down) had to go through his email to find it as an attachment.
anyway, not to brag or anything, but I reckon I can get rejected twice that amount no problem. those are starter numbers. this book will be rejected up into the triple digits, and once I've finally thrown my arms up and self-published, at last people will be able to crack the thing open and be like "okay yeah.....I get it now.....the concussed elf maybe shouldn't have been a point of view character."

An engine whose driver is logistics AI Balanceaban.
The two communicate instantly and innately. Baal’s directions appear as unobtrusive mental notes in the engine’s mind. Despite appearing in the same space as their own thoughts, the engine can clearly delineate between its own thoughts and Baal’s directions.
Their builders actually had no idea what would happen if a sapient AI and a living machine occupied the same body. The unit was built with Balanceaban in mind, and can be operated by both the AI and a human engineer.
Since the engine’s operator is intangible, Baal’s unit is an oddity among machines and humans alike. They are a bit shy, so Baal delivers tips on socializing whenever it notices its unit struggling with social interaction.

I just noticed I didn't tell you yet--which is shameful as it is Tumblr where the Mermaid Scientist was born! My Mermaid Book was picked up by Eye of Newt and is available for pre-order right now (it's coming out very soon, though, so any orders should make it until Christmas if that's a concern of yours)! If you're in North America, I'd suggest ordering directly through my publisher's website, however it's available anywhere you'd usually order books. You can ask your favourite indie book shop to order it for you or--if there's no other option or you're worried about crazy shipping costs where you live--it's available via the place starting with A, which shall otherwise not be named, as well. Please note: This is an edited version of the original book. It's shorter, but with more coherent world building and a beautiful new layout and design. It's a proper field guide now!

Since I posted some of my old fanart yesterday... if you're not familiar with Slayers, and thus have never heard its amazing music, do check it out. It's largely by the same songwriter, Masami Okui, that did Utena's iconic opening (Rinbu Revolution) and ofc (TRUTH) and sung by a duo of her and Hayashibara Megumi (you know, the GOAT)
youtube
The entire OST pretty much slaps. there's only a couple of bad image songs in an absolute expanse of pure gold. GIVE A REASON, the opening to the second season, tends to be the reigning favorite. (I've a hard time pinning down my absolute favorite... of the original openings, it might be Breeze, but all three are so good. Of the entire catalog? Impossible to choose. Midnight Blue, Raging Waves, Within my Unlimited Desires, Gloria, Get Along... Impossible Choice)
