This is an artists’ book in the form of an origami fortune teller. Often used in children’s games, the operator places their thumbs and first fingers inside the pockets of the device and presents it to the player. The player makes selections, and the operator opens and closes the fortune teller based on the player’s choices. In the end, the player will pick a flap to reveal a hidden message and read their fortune.
This artists’ book entitled “How to fall apart and come back together : a fortune teller” by Vanessa Adams is a piece of queer magic that asks us to make space to pause and reimagine ourselves beyond the limits of our body. What can we shed? What old parts of ourselves no longer serve us? What new forms can we envision for ourselves in their stead? Following in the footsteps of our queer and trans fungal and plant kin, we can shapeshift and transform. (Summarized from the artist’s website)
How to fall apart and come back together : a fortune teller Adams, Vanessa (Artist) [artist, printer] Manufactured: [Pittsburgh] : Vanessa Adams, [2021] 1 folded sheet : color illustrations ; 23 x 23 cm (folded) English HOLLIS number: 99156316583003941

Weekend reflections: - Facial hair is a core piece of where I see myself in the mirror. Being without it can trip my dysphoria and cutting it off is a hard limit. - There is such power in the word “Us” and I am grateful to Athena Kali in her 24/7 power exchange relationship class for the reminder. - My lungs are not in good shape. Luckily, I know how to look cute in an open-chest sparkle catsuit, and I have wonderful people in my life who understand when I need to back out of the clown-bang. - There is such power in being around other gender adventurers, including adopting them into circles of sometimes jaded creatures. - I love crazy artists and beautiful monsters. - Sleep. My body is still needing to sleep 12+ hours a day, and instead of being mad, just be. - Love. I love. My relationships with people flow, but the love is still there (thank you Kero and Amy) - My pleasure continues to heal my ancestors, and in turn let me become a good ancestor for those who come after me… and those whose lives and loves I touch. - I am blessed. Thank you Unabashed Queer Kink Con, the producers, volunteers, ritualists, adventurers, presenters, vendors, and collaborators on this adventure. It has been an honor to dance with y’all. @unabashedcon #UnabashedCon #QueerKink #KinkConference #QueerMagic #StudioFriction https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1LK9oOPid/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book review “Outside the Charmed Circle - Exploring Gender & Sexuality in Magical Practice” by Misha Magdalene
The author of this book is a nonbinary queer witch, a pagan and has studied sciences of gender and sexuality. Sometimes they elaborate explaining why they have written something and at times, this book has a quite academic, theoretical feeling. But on the other hand, in some places in this book, thorough explanations and definitions are simply necessary. After a foreword (by Michelle Belanger) and an introduction, in the second chapter it‘s all about terms and their definitions. This is especially good for straight/cis allies who are not familiar with the many queer labels out there. In the next chapter, embodiment as magical praxis is mostly focussing on the body, but not only. Moving on, gender in theory and praxis and what this has to do with magic, followed up by a chapter about »Queerness and the charmed circle«. In chapter 6, it gets physical (and metaphysical), this is about sex magic and yes, there is a practical exercise/ritual. The whole book has several exercises, some of them thought-provoking for writing, others are focussing on spells, working with your body (for instance a mindfulness exercise) and rituals. Chapter 7 focusses on »A consent based Magical Praxis«, which I find to be a very important subject in any community and in any relationship. This is followed by another very good chapter about »Negotiating Consent With Gods« where the author explains that yes, you can say No to a deity if their requests are unwelcome. But that is by far not all which can be said on that matter, which this chapter shows. I have never read anything like these chapters about consent in an esoteric book, just bits and pieces in some blogs and I am very glad it got included so thoroughly here. Chapter 9 ist about »Queering your Praxis: Developing and Adapting Magical Practices«. I thought the author might give some practical examples here, but instead they stayed more theoretical here, elaborating about three different approaches to a spiritual/magical/witchcraft path and how you could adapt queerness in them. I very much like the next chapter about »Thoughts on Politics, Power and Community«. If you consider yourself and your spiritual path apolitical, the author here reminds us that any interaction in communities and between people is actually political on some level. They write about how power (and power differences) influence p-word communities (p-word stands for pagan, polytheism, pantheism) and also leaders in these communities. They continue to write about diversity, inclusion and its opposite, for instance the exclusion of white supremacists and other hate groups in many heathen communities, also mentioning the paradox of tolerance about which the philosopher Karl Popper wrote. There are some more thoughts on »What Lies Beyond the Circle« in the last chapter, followed by two extensive appendixes for further reading which are worth a closer look. My conclusion: I can highly recommend this thorough book very much to any queer person on a spiritual/pagan/witchcraft/magic path, as well as straight/cis allies.

Queer Herbal Magic
While there are flowers and herbs that hold significance in queer magic, such as lavender, pansies, and green carnations, sometimes the most potent magic comes not from the specific plant species, but from it’s circumstance.
Weeds can be an extremely powerful ingredient for the queer witch.  Like queerness, weeds grow despite all efforts of the gardener to keep the garden neat and orderly.  Weeds can come in many shapes and sizes, but like queer identities, they exist in opposition to hegemonic structure.
Sometimes the conditions where a plant grows can lend it to become a useful ingredient to queer magic.  For queer love spells, I often like to seek out plants that grow despite all the odds against them, such as flowers growing in the cracks of sidewalks, or saplings growing along fence lines just out of reach of the lawnmower’s blades.

The energy of the day: the #6ofwands How to best harness it: the #aceofwands . . Reclaiming all of your desires is a fantastic gift we’re given today. In a world that tells us we’re only allowed to do one thing for the rest of our lives, that tells us that sex or desire must look a certain way and pleasure must always be veiled in modesty, saying yes to our appetites in an unapologetic way can be so revolutionary and empowering its destabilizes those around us that aren’t ready to do the same. Knowing your power and holding it like a wand is the the hardest part of casting a spell. For some of us, this is difficult, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re reminded again and again today of just the amount of momentum and energy you bring to the table inherently. The hard part is what comes next. Take it. Grasp your hand around your intention, your power, your energetic, spiritual, and physical desire. Let it run through you like magma and out your arms into the world. That is the second half to the spell. I’ve spent a week here applying and looking for some kind of work, trying hard to keep anxiety at bay. But I woke up this morning with an intoxicating sentence running through my head: I have absolutely nothing to worry about. I am so charismatic, so powerful, and so divinely guided that all I need do is take action, then wait for the spell to take root and foster. So too are you divinely guided, even if there are systems in place to hold you and hurt you. Even if you’re conditioned to believe you are weak, you do not belong, your desires and existence are incorrect and monstrous. It’s all just so much compost for your future garden baby. Just grab a wand and step into yourself, and remember that this: your existence is resistance; your breath is a spell. I love you 🌺💖🔥🌊🌪🌲✨🧿 . . We Thrive to Spite You // A Prayer for Trans Liberation On this blessed midsummer, I call down the sun, I call down the moon, and I call down my spirit. Let us grow under your nurturing warmth on this the longest day of the year. Let us have courage when we have every right to fear. Let us see our truest selves and press forward against the dark. There is a long winter ahead, full of those who wish to uproot us. For every one they take, let our roots grow deeper, our community stronger, our love more real. This flame holds space for those we've lost and for those who came before us. This flame holds space for the brick throwers, the pioneers, and for those living their quiet truth. And as the flame holds space for you, so does my heart. #midsummer #litha #magic #magicspell #queermagic #queerpride #transpride #nonbinary #queerasinfuckyou https://www.instagram.com/p/By_mVunB17Z/?igshid=aijsmlikgif2

"If Earth, Air, Water, and Fire are four primary elements in use energetically in many magical models, then the interstitial elements are those which fall between them. They are those that combine elements in such a way as to not know where one starts and the other begins. They are the elements that fall outside of the dyads, outside of the opposites of perceived polarities. They are the queer elements. Queer elements are the places that fill those middle points. They are southeast, southwest, northeast, and northwest. They are the places where South and North dance as a joyous couple, rather than always sitting at opposite ends of the room. They are when the lovers East and West find their lips together, rather than whispering at each other from miles away." - from the essay by Lee Harrington, "Queer Elements: Working with Interstitial Energies," published in the collection, "Queer Magic: Power Beyond Boundaries" Buy your copy today: https://www.ipgbook.com/mystic-productions-press-publisher-MYP.php [Description: The cover of "Queer Magic: Power Beyond Boundaries" edited by Lee Harrington and Tai Fenix Kulystin, is shown to the right of the quote, "Queer elements are the places that fill those middle points.
