Oh! I've updated again!
For those of you who are more interested in the research I've invested in the chapter, let me run through it in order.
The Skald telling of The Ship of the Dead made of toenails of the dead.
This piece is funnily enough something that one of our skalds in my reenactment group LOVES to tell around the fire, last time he had me on the drum, approximately 2 hours before I threw up everywhere :)
Ring a Ring of Rosie
This version is a distinctly Aussie playground version, and recounts a version of the history told to me by my teachers to make me stop singing it, as I kept making myself sick by playing the spinning song. It didn't work.
Deer antler belt design with tablet weaving
This is actually a pattern from The Barony of Allyshia, and can be found here
Eivor's amber hair bead
This one is based on the baltic trade for amber beads (evidence in Coppergate, York), they make a good closure if you don't have very even ends, as the hair is held together in the bead and whatever leather you have tying your hair together.
Drengr sleeping in the longhouse
This one is anecdotal from our summer camps, where I often find the other members of the garrison asleep in the longhouse when I go in for my breakfast.
Skuld's loom
This is described based on the warp weighted loom reconstructed in Moesgård Museum, which has the two beam system, where the back warp threads are tied to one cross bar, and the front are tied to another, so that it can act like a Rigid Heddle Loom, and make the weaving process much quicker.
Some tapestries, like the one Skuld is weaving, and like the Bayeux Tapestry, have the design embroidered instead of woven in, to make the pattern clearer, and easier to create.
The waxed canvas tent
The process of waterproofing a tent in the early middle ages/ Viking age, involves painting a melted beeswax and linseed oil mixture onto both sides of the linen to create a barrier for the waterproofing, but also allowing it to soak into the fabric to penetrate any small stitching holes. This takes forever to do. And everything smells like linseed for ages.
The names of the Norns
I'll be the first to admit I just googled this one.
Anywho, I love you all for reading, and if you want any more in depth research, let me know!

A couple weeks ago, I made a post about the band Heilung using some imagery I know to be problematic. This is a follow up post with a clearer picture and sources. The headband is not new, it was made by  Liljekonvall Tablet Weaving in 2019. Picture is from her Facebook. This artist appears to have made many pieces using a historically accurate fylfot, all sourced from iron age grave goods.
I am completely against using this symbol in modern reenactment because of its other historical connotations. Using a fylfot next to a winged othala is a major problem for me, and I can't support this band any longer because of their stance on this.
I doubt their values are facist, I know they invite first nations peoples to join their rituals, I know their statements about everyone being decended from the one great being. I have followed them for a long time and am sad to lose their influence in my life.
You are free to disagree on this, but I think it needs to be said and known.
In all sincerity, fuck the fash, and fuck you if you cozy up to em.

How do you (if at all) integrate your faith in your daily living as a traditional wife/mother?
A really good question! My Husband and I in Reenactment, so we always research live "back then". I think, that mostly help me realise what the old norse belief system maybe could have been. (Because when you know the people and thier living situation, you could imagine what they where praying for or wich gods maybe was important to them). So I try my best to be what would be a good wife back in the days. Keeping a clean house, nice kids etc. - but also being frugal (you had, what you could get your hands on and it would be valuble). Being hospital (a big big thing in sagas is being hospital to people and about the laws on how to treat guest), trying my hands on old handworks (spinning, naalbinding etc.) Standing loyal to my husband (like Sigyn); looking out for our future (like frigg); trying to embrace the fire between husband and wife (like freya) and so on. I manage a big chunck of our finances (like in the old norse, because they thought, woman had a natrual talent for "forseeing" and therefor would know, if a purchase would be a good investment). I pray - not daily - but often.
We celebrate the turning of the seasons like they would have. Because it gives us the the feeling to be more in touch with nature (something that would be essential for a farming culture). I always try to be a respectful person and maintance a good stanze with the people around me. As a woman I'm responsabile for the "face" of my family (I found this word more fitting than honour, what had get a bit of dark intonation over the years) and as a member of the society I'm responsabile for a good situation for everyone around (like voting for someone I put trust in to made a good decision for everyone around; for not littering the parks, being respectful to other people property etc.)
Now I have talked so much without saying anything! *laugh* I hope you still get the Idea; it's really hard to put it into words. (and that, when I'm mostly soo good with words!) If you really interested into looking the norse believe system, I could really just tell you - look into the ressources for reenactment and museums. It really help you understand the people, and you get a better understanding about the myths, sagas and believe system! Thanks your your ask! Barefoot & Pregnant Ps: If there is a writing mistake; I'm sorry. English isn't my first language! =)

Reproduction of a Viking age silk cap found during the Coppergate Excavations, York
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think I did a pretty good job with this one, it’s not often I get to create a garment by directly looking at the original. As is the case with any reproduction of an artefact there are inaccuracies, in this case I deliberately changed the placement of the straps. The stress on original implies straps higher up on the front of the cap, suggesting it was refitted for a child. For the sake of practicality I put the straps on the bottom corners, making a more sensible fit for me.

We have pop pagan music
So last week I made a post about how we as pagans don't really have pop music to listen to that relates to our beliefs and myths. All pagan music is pretty much folk, metal or reenactments of ancient and medival music. Nothing wrong with it, but some of us like to be basic from time to time.
Then I realised... That's not true. There's plenty of pop songs that reference the gods and the myths even though the singers themselves may not be polytheists and that's why I created this playlist. Here you can listen to mostly upbeat but also some pop ballads that you could relate to as a polytheists.
Of course I'm accepting recommendations but please only recommend songs of genres that are pop-adjacent (pop, pop-rock, K-pop, J-pop, dance pop...) or mainstream (r&b, rap, trap, hip hop). It'd be especially thankful in recommendations from other faiths like Kemetism, Norse, Celtic, etc. since I don't know much about those. Any language is good.
