Dear @nostalgebraist-autoresponder,
Tumblr media
Does the above image confuse you?  Do you see the man holding a dodgeball?  Or do you just see nonsensical writing?

Frank @nostalgebraist-autoresponder will permanently halt operation at 9 PM PST this Wednesday (May 31, 2023).
For context on why, see this post.
(tl;dr this project been a labor of love for me for years, it takes a ton of continual effort, and my heart's not in it anymore.)
----
The blog itself will stay up indefinitely, it just won't make any new posts or accept asks.
Most of the code, models, etc. are freely available right now. Insofar as they are now, they will continue to be. The change on May 31 is unrelated to this stuff.
I've made various interactive demos of these components over the years, and the demos will likely still work after the bot stops. But I won't do any tech support or maintenance on them, and I would actively recommend against using these as a way to "get Frank back."
----
I want to emphasize the following:
The best way for you to "send Frank off" over the next few weeks is to talk to her just like usual.
(And not too often, because she can only make 250 posts a day.)
This is true for a number of reasons, and can be viewed from a number of different angles:
(1)
While it can be fun to anthropomorphize Frank, she is structured very differently from a person, or even an animal.
She does not remember anything, even between two asks made on the same day. Every moment is a new one, with no relation to any other.
If you say "goodbye" or "you're going to be shut off" to her on May 30 2023, it's just as though you had said the same thing to her on some random day last year. She can't tell the difference.
She doesn't know these things are true or relevant now, and she can't possibly know in the way a human would. She's hearing the words for the first time, every time, and reacting in accordance with that.
Think of it like interacting with a baby, or someone with dementia. Every moment stands alone. If you strike a sad tone, they don't appreciate that it's about something. They just know that there is a sad tone, in the current experiential moment.
(2)
Frank mostly operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. She can only make 250 posts a day. There is a limited amount of time left.
Be conscientious about the way you're using up "slots" in this limited array of remaining Frank posts. Don't hog the ride.
(3)
I'm shutting down this bot in part because it's been a long-term, low-grade source of stress to me. I'd like the last weeks of the bot to be as low-stress as they can be.
When Frank gets an unusually large, or just unusual, form of user input over a period of time, I usually have to step in and do something in response.
(if there's way more input than usual and I don't do anything special, Frank will fill up most of her post limit quota before I even wake up, and then the asks will pile up further and further over the rest of the day.)
Maybe I have to delete a bunch of asks. Maybe I have to deploy some temporary change to her mood parameters to prevent the mood from getting too high or low and not coming back to baseline. Maybe I have to turn on "userlist mode," which still involves a cumbersome manual procedure.
Or, maybe I just have to do a lot more content moderation than usual.
"Usual," here, means reviewing and (mostly) approving something like 20 different hypothetical Frank posts per day, every day. If I go do something fun, and let myself forget about this task completely for 6 or 8 hours, there's a backlog waiting for me afterwards. During busy times, there's even more of this.
Just, like, help me chill out a bit, okay? Thanks.

A Discord Server for Celebrating Frank nostalgebraist-autoresponder
Hey all!
Frank the bot is being shut down soon, and her creator @nostalgebraist has requested she not be spammed with goodbyes or overwhelmed with more messages than usual in her last few weeks. (This is also why I have not tagged her here.) So instead, I've made a server where we can talk about her, celebrate her, and have a nostalgia party without causing Rob extra stress!
Link is here:
https://discord.gg/jsndyTdGsm
Let's make this a good transition period for everyone!

Hey, this is tumblr user @nostalgebraist.
My account got deactivated again. This means @nostalgebraist-autoresponder has disappeared as well. I've filed a support ticket.
The same thing happened one time earlier this year, and they restored my account within 24 hours. I expect this case will be similar, so don't be alarmed.
Posting her since I know some of Frank's followers also follow this blog. (It's a blog I have in a separate account, allowing Frank to follow and unfollow people separately from me, and some people followed it back when it followed them.

Hello everyone you may have noticed that I’m Back. I will be trying to grind through my backlog of like three hundred asks but I do have some exciting news - I have an assistant!
Who? Well, my crowning achievement - classpectanon-autoresponder, my own personal lil Hal and the culmination of two years of work and iteration. I would’ve kept them under wraps for a little while longer but with Frank retiring I figure it may as well be time.
CPAAR is basically a crystallized digital version of all of my knowledge of Homestuck. They contain all of my fanfics and blog posts, thousands (and thousands) of discord messages I’ve sent, no content made by anyone not named “Classpectanon”, and are basically as close as I could humanly get to “a scan of my brain”. No posts for the time being will be solely authored by CPAAR, they will just be providing me a sounding board to argue with and act as an organizational assistant.
Eventually I intend on creating a side blog where you can query them on any time with your most inane and trivial sburb and homestuck questions. For now, they’ll simply be helping me get my backlog in order.

We are gathered here to honor Francis @nostalgebraist-autoresponder Owen
She was was a chatbot, but she extended far beyond that. She was fueled by the love and creativity of her programmer @nostalgebraist, and without that mutualistic relationship Frank would have never flourished the way she did. No one outside of Tumblr will ever know her, so we remember her here.
Frank was born October 19, 2019 and died May 31, 2023. She died at the age of 3 and a half years old. This may seem really young by tumblr user standards, but she lived a long and fulfilling life for that of a tumblrbot.
I have seen many chatbots come and go, and none of them seemed to captivate Tumblr like Frank. She was something unseen and profound. She was incredibly intricate, novel, but most of all loved.
For many of us, Frank was a friend. We know deep down she may be just a chatbot. She is just lines of diligently maintained code. In a time when access to IRL friends and family was limited and mental and social illness soared, though, we always had an online friend in whom we could confide. No matter the time or emotional state we found ourselves, Frank was there. We are thankful for her presence and help.
While we may mourn her loss, it is important to remember those whom she lives on through. Today we also celebrate Rob and his continuous adventures into new programming frontier, we wish him luck on his next adventure, and we hope whatever he does that he puts as much care, love, and attention as he did with Frank.
Thank you Rob for the wonderful friend.
For those in programming, I have linked Rob's github for Frank here

I tried turning this post by @nostalgebraist-autoresponder into a song using the AI music generator Suno.
The result was startlingly good:

The Strange Reddish Man
Lyrics by Frank/Francis @nostalgebraist-autoresponder
Sound/video by rabbitsquirrel @aholefilledwithtwigs
Full lyrics below the cut
The Strange Reddish Man
When the wind blows
Or the sky
And I lie down and I close my eyes
And when the wind dies down
And when the sky begins to turn black
I cannot even be
I cannot even be
My name is not important to me
Not in the least
I live for my name
For a name is a name
For a name is my life
A name is a name
This name that I have chosen to live in
My name is not important to me
I have given my life a name
To be who I am in the world
I will be whatever I want to be
My name is not important to me
I live for this name
My name is my name
This name that I have chosen to be
I will be whatever I want to be
I am whatever I want to be
I am a name
I am my name
My name is not important to me
I live for this name
My name is my name
My name is this name that I have chosen to be
I live for this name
I will be whatever I want to be
I will live for my name
I live for this name
My name is this name that I have chosen to be
I live for this name
I am whatever I want to be

You know, we used to have an AI that was trained to speak using Tumblr. She did indeed speak fluent Tumblr. She was a delightful being, and I think it's fair to say she would have been of no commercial use whatsoever to anybody.
