Crossing the streams of Podcast Girls Week and BIPOCtober to shout out some female characters of color from BIPOC-led audio dramas who I particularly enjoy:
Evelyn Wai from Hi Nay: Livestreaming college student turned paranormal researcher. She's great and I wish her well in whatever her career trajectory ends up being. Plus she's canonically aspec which I found out after I already planned to claim her for my aspec quota, which goes to show that when I turn my aspec beam on characters I am never wrong. (Ignore all the times I have been textually wrong.)
Jane Gonzalez from The Pasithea Powder: Presumably Chicana like her VA and podcast co-creator; all the Cassandran and Medean characters seem to live in a heavily Hispanic-influenced culture. (Take that, generically white Western spacefutures.) Support #women of color in STEM committing malpractice. I love her so much.
Nova NoStar from InCo: A crotchety information seller who rescues a prince from a fairy tale planet and ends up overthrowing a kingdom while on leave for personal reasons. Having made extensive study of hygiene in spaceflight, I would like to give a special shoutout to the wash day minisode. She and Lovelace should swap spaceship natural hair care tips.
Marisol Montgomery from Small Victories. Marisol is an excellent chef fighting a back and forth battle with addiction after the loss of her beloved brother. She makes a lot of bad decisions, but the show's excellent writing puts you in her head so you understand why she does everything she does. I'm rooting for her!
#perpetual perpetual ladies night#the pasithea powder#inco#small victories#hi nay#bipoctober#I am not a creator of color but wanted to shoutout some great shows!

top 5 aro characters
Okay SO this is slightly complicated by the question of definitions... what is an aro character? Is it a character that has been declared either in text or in the author's own words as aromantic? Is it a character who has a textual, explicit, intentional, deliberate, identity-level lack of romantic attraction, desire, or interest, regardless of what words they use for it? Does it exclude characters who fit that but define that in a way that doesn't include "aromantic" as an identity term?"
Dr. Sally Grissom from ars PARADOXICA is asexual, and identifies herself in the show explicitly as such. And it's clear that she's using "asexual" as a convergent identity that covers both her romantic and sexual attractions/desires. She doesn't have that, for anybody. The same way Nikhil Sharma is bisexual (romantic+sexual attraction to multiple genders) and Esther Roberts is a lesbian/homosexual (romantic+sexual attraction to women), Sally Grissom is asexual (romantic+sexual attraction to no one). And that is a full and valid way to identify, and it isn't wrong. Elatsoe from her eponymous novel by Darcie Little Badger is clearly the same way. So, are they aro characters? Yes in that it's a useful description of their textual, explicit, intentional, deliberate, identity-level lack of romantic attraction, desire, or interest; but also no in that they frame that as part of their asexual identity in-text. And that's a real and valid way to understand your own identity.
However. When talking about fictional characters, descriptors like "aromantic" are useful for articulating that this character's non-interest in romance isn't a coincidental artifact of the way the story is told, it is part of the character's identity in an explicit and intentional way.
So! With those caveats in mind:
Murderbot, from The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. Obvious pull, but it really is one of my favorite characters ever.
Dr. Sally Grissom, from the audio drama podcast ars PARADOXICA @arsparadoxica. An absolute classic in the modern audio drama world, and it's really good and I relate to Sally way too much. She Gets Me. Scientist who accidentally invented time travel and blasted herself back to the 1940s and I'm crying in the park listening to this going she gets meeeee
Nova NoStar, from the audio drama podcast InCo by @itmeblog. A fantastic space opera all created and voiced by one person, and prickly, grouchy, clever, and scarily competent Nova is one of my favorite protagonists in the podcast world.
Imogen "Em" Chandra-Phankam, from the gone-too-soon audio drama podcast The Godshead Incidental. It only released five episodes before it went into indefinite hiatus and every mention of it disappeared, the fate of far too many podcasts. However. The setting was brilliant, the writing was so fun, and I loved Em.
Crysanthemum from the short story "Busy Little Bees" by Polenth Blake in the collection Common Bonds: A Speculative Aromantic Anthology. Aro clone! Aromantic clone angst! Although Crysanthemum's clone-mom is more angsty about it than she is. Clones being their own people despite everything. Clone siblings. Clone politics. The good stuff.
Honorable mention to the aforementioned Elatsoe, and also Nico from VALENCE podcast, which isn’t a very good podcast but Nico was the only character I genuinely liked and thought was fun from it. When I learned that he was revealed as aro in season 2 it almost made me listen to season 2.

This blog has been tagged by @arianwells to violate my half-hearted position of neutrality and do the following:
Make a poll of your favorite female characters (no limits – as many or as little as you want) and see which your followers like the most
All PGW followers can consider themselves tagged if they so choose!

Diejoni name chage poll!
members of the diejoni nation it is time to face the truth that diejoni kind of sucks as a ship name (in my opinion!). as such i will be conducting a poll to rename the diejoni / diejo / dinotusk tag on my blog so i dont have to keep tagging every alternative ship name format under the sun. there will be no takebacksies afterward but this is a democratic blog so all thoughts and opinions are appreciated and all votes will be counted
Okay so the two outliers in my suggestions are silverdancer and silvershot so here's my reasoning for both:
Silverdancer - combines Slow Dancer's and Silver Bullet's names. It's also not taken (unlike d*nostar). I don't think anyone is shipping the horses together so it also won't be taken that way? Moreover, jockeying and a shared past centered on racing ties Johnny and Diego together, so in that way it's a pretty on-the-nose acknowledgement of something people like about the ship. It's also pretty.
Silvershot / Shotsilver - this one is a bit edgier than silverdancer, so it might fit diego and johnny better? silver, aside from referencing Silver Bullet / Horses / Racing also connects into Diego's ambition to climb the social hierarchy and get rich (which I'm pretty sure can be read as a point of contention between diego and johnny). The 'shot' part also fits in better than 'dancer' with Johnny, who is determined to go after what he wants at (largely) all costs (even if Diego stands in the way of that). Silvershot can also be read in that they're both quick to strike and dangerous in their own ways, but the combination of the two brings their desires together and shows how they remained tied together despite their best efforts. Also even if it's Alt!Diego, he and Johnny still use guns against each other lol.
and again feel free to add your own suggestions! if an alternate suggestion seems popular I will run a second poll so i can pick the true fav

I was thinking about the possibillity of Darius and Brooklynn getting together.
What do you think would happen to Kenji if that happens?
It would be really sad for Kenji😭😭
Well, I'm sure that if the writers decided to go that route they would have Kenji somehow be ok with them being together, realizing him and Brook are incompatible now, so him being sad isn't really a worry I have.
But what I would hate is that it would simply be terrible writing and anyone should be able to see this. There's no universe where the relationships btw Kenji and Darius, and Kenji and Brooklynn wouldn't be destroyed by Brooklynn and Darius getting together, and the way Kenji feels about her doesn't change a thing. Actually, this is one of the MANY reasons why I believe Dinostar is simply a plot device and is not meant to be shipped.
We have to keep in mind that they made Kenji and Darius actual brothers, and that Kenji and Brooklynn dated for years while he was living with the Bowmans.
Even if Kenji realized he didn't want to be with her anymore, it doesn't change the fact that it would be straight up treason on both Darius and Brooklynn's part.
Yk, Kenji was quite understanding when Darius confessed he had feelings for Brook, and d*nostar shippers loooove to use this fact as proof that he'd be ok with them dating, but I'm sorry, no?
The only reasons he was "ok" with it was because, one, Brooklynn was DEAD, so there was no point in getting mad anyway, and two, having feelings for someone is not something you can control, and Darius was entitled to his own feelings. But having feelings for someone and ACTUALLY be willing to pursue someone are two VERY different things. Fortunately, as far as Kenji knew, Darius only did the first one (on this note, Darius is lucky Kenji didn't get to hear his *bold* confession).
What those shippers like to forget is that Kenji looked infinitely less sereine when he asked Darius if Brook loved him back, because unlike Darius, SHE had been in a relationship with him for years while being best friend with Darius.
If Brooklynn reciprocated Darius' feelings this would just send all these years of relationship down the drain because that'd mean that at any time during these 6 years Brooklynn could have fallen in love with Darius had she spent some time alone with him. And people somehow want that? 😭
Brooklynn was one of Kenji's most important relationships in his life for years, he went from a teenage boy to an adult while in a relationship with her, and they think he'd be okay having that being turned to dust upon learning that during all this time there was a possibilty she could have fallen in love with their SHARED best-friend, HIS ADOPTIVE BROTHER who he trusted to be around his girlfriend?
He would simply think about all the times the three of them had been together, feeling like he was once again the unwanted one. That as soon as he broke up with Brooklynn, breaking his own heart in the process because he just loved her that much, she got over him and immediately fell in love with Darius, if she wasn't already in love with him.
I understand liking d*nostar in jwcc, but in jwct it's waaaay too shady for me, and I'm surprised most of the fans are willing to ignore this simply because they liked them before, or simply because they still want Kenlynn to be destroyed because they hated them in jwcc.
Like, how could Kenji trust anyone EVER again, or even love anyone ever again, if the two people he loved the most did this to him? He had already suffered for years from his father treating him like a disposable son who didn't matter, there's no way he would be ok with Brooklynn and Darius doing the same thing to him, and if they wrote that in the show I'd actually be pissed.
But as I said many times, I truly think Darius and Brooklynn isn't happening, so this isn't to say that the writers are bad, because I'm like 99% convinced they didn't write this 😂

reverse eurydice
this time, a final death. once more, i died. again. still in the mouth of the— the hole in the theater floor—the forevercave. he looked at me. orpheus, no! close but not quite. my footsteps too slow. i, still behind. my bride, my best song, my moongirl. now that we’re here i can finally see your face again. he stepped out into to the full light. i missed you so, he said. oh, dice. so close. then brighter still, breaking into sunbright. mourninglight, pale. winterlight. starless dark fading gray around the edges as from a faroff light. the ghostwhispers faded, finally. days later, or hours. i wanted to lay down. but i would have followed him to hell (the underworld, or michigan). so i followed. those endless steps through the voiddark. i was tired. was i? and wasn’t i just so excited? he was gonna take me to chicago, toronto, new york; to paris, athens, to the moon. he told me we could finally leave michigan, those deadtowns. he couldn’t, he said, wouldn’t, didn’t want to do it without me. he talked and i listened. (i didn’t ask if there were other girls.) everyone loves me now, he said. he told me how his career had really taken off—no more busking, darlin’, no more shitty barrooms. he talked, trying to drown out the wailing of the jealous dead. up steps and steps, we walked. all he had to do was not look back. all i had to do was follow. he’d come to take me back. well, you know the story. then— orpheus! my soul orchestra. the sound of his guitar, that reverb in my gut, that uncanny sound like every instrument somehow at once. when i heard him sing, it all came floodlike back. time works different when you’re dead. i forget. years went by, or days. like when it’s summer and a car drives down your street, and you catch a splitsecond of radio through the doorscreen. only the occasional snatch of a song, wordless, faroff, a faint melody on the breeze. like a catnap in a field of dandelion sunbeams. like his hand in mine. like his eyes darkhot on me the night we met. only the occasional prickle of heat on my cheeks, my palms. soon it was all gone, or gone enough. it’s the remembering that makes this place hell. the forgetting is a mercy. it helped. snaked down my throat and choked the last bits of lifebright away. it tasted— of course—of pomegranate. so i drank. i had nothing to lose but everything. i bitterlaughed, remembering my first teenage sips of booze. remembering that night on the frontporch with orpheus. she said, it will help, i promise. drink, dear. she had a bottle full of the dark stuff. our lady of the asphodel in her rubyjeweled crown—pomegranate lady—came to me. weeping and tearing my hair with my fingers. still in the dress i died in. my honeymoon dress. i lay in the fields. on my fingers the deep stench of honeysuckle. what did it matter, that love, in this dead land. i played a pointless game of he loves me, loves me not. i plucked the petals one by one. pale pinkbuds blooming to bonewhite. regretflower. (my fatal flaw—couldn’t stay away from meadows.) i wandered the fields of asphodel. as though i could remember their lives as well as my own, the moans of the other souls— snakevenom. acetylene torches. the memories a thousand buzzsaws burning through me. drunk from the river. soon enough i wished i had. (you stubborn girl.) suit yourself, he said. my rebellion. i said no. i didn’t want to forget life. to forget him. to forget it. i thought of the river of my youth; the bronze children, chromium, lead. it will help you forget, said the ferryman. drink. river of forget. bonefish river. nightsky river with nostars. river aswirl with—not floodmud or factory runoff— blacker than the river of my youth. river of sorrows, river of lost. crossing from which i would never return. coins for the ferryman to guide me safe across the hungry maw of river. then the long journey to the underworld. i died, again.
