Happy Halloween! I'm really excited to be finally launching* what is maybe one of my most ambitious, largest work yet. This online library is the next phase of a research project that began in May 2020, when I first mused on how comics as a field doesn't have a resource that catalogues devices used in the medium. Like, theatre has devices, so does literature, and film! So why shouldn't comics? I always had an interest in comics studies and analysis. I love reading, making and thinking comics. However most of my knowledge was intuitive - I learned comics from osmosis and experience. This is true for many of my peers. Speaking about comics as a creator is hard, because we don't have a robust system of language. When we had to speak, many of us tend to reach for the language developed for film by film practitioners. If there is language specific to comics, it's either scattered in multiple blogs or hidden away in academic journals. The Comics Devices library is meant to aggregate everything and everybody into a single hub! After exploring some multiple resources, alongside some original, independent research, here is the first edition! * The Comics Devices project is still a work-in-progress! It's not final, nor will it ever be. This is why I am seeking contributors to help build this library. Translations, comics examples, etc. There is a lot of work to do! the reason why i'm so endlessly obsessed with the dynamic between the magi warden and jowan is because of how. insane the PRIVILEGE you get from irving is. like they're both around the same-ish age (with jowan likely being just a couple years older), they both came to the circle at similar ages (jowan being there longest), they're both arguably very similar in their skill level (the part where the warden and jowan both have to open the door through magic i think can be used as proof of this!) and more than that, they're both so inseparable as a pair that jowan says he sees them as a younger sibling.

but even despite this jowan was literally constantly thrown under the bus by irving literally every chance he got. we know jowan's blood magic was almost definitely a symptom of irving enticing young apprentices towards the forbidden arts in order to weed out the "weak" willed mages, but the thing is, we also know that the only reason jowan turned to blood magic at all was because he was being denied his harrowing, and at a certain age if you haven't had your harrowing then you're essentially guaranteed to be made tranquil. so the insane dogging on jowan from irving was done even *before* he was put on irving's radar for practicing blood magic.

meanwhile the magi warden is irving's favorite student. his pride and joy. he constantly sticks his neck out for them (literally having to be told off by greagoir for essentially cheating during the warden's harrowing by telling them exactly what they will have to face in order to succeed), practically showers them in praise when introducing them to duncan, defends them after helping jowan escape EVEN IF if they were doing it directly under his nose, and all but verbally thanks duncan for rescuing them from the circle. it's very clear that irving sees the warden as almost his own child. but its also like. why did he choose them as an apprentice? you can play the warden as belligerently hostile towards the circle as possible and he still adores you.

meanwhile jowan was doing everything in his power to be as compliant as he could even despite his obvious resentment towards the system, but he was always just so replaceable. the kid literally never stood a chance and i'm almost certain at least part of it is because irving already chose his model student to groom and mentor into his successor, and it happened to be the magi warden.

the fact that one of the two magi wardens is a human noble from the free marches as well also adds a delicious layer to me too because then its like. now the problem seems way more systemic. your star pupil just Happens to be a young mage from a prestigious human family. and then its like. fuck why was amell even In kinloch hold to begin with? why werent they sent to the gallows? they're canonically the eldest of their siblings, so it couldnt have been to avoid having two relatives in the same circle at once. you know what i think though. i think they were only sent there because their family was influential enough to avoid having them locked away in what is essentially the most notoriously evil circle in all of thedas.

just very delicious to me how depending on your origin theres almost very clearly a class element at play. jowan was just a random village kid compared to amell. insane.

I'm sorry I just cannot get over how BORING the eras tour book cover is. not only is it the same photo we've seen a million times as the tour movie poster but there's zero design elements to it?? I'd hoped that midnights + ttpd signalled taylor moving away from the recent album art trend of "just take a photo and leave it at that, who cares about incorporating the title or anything" but that's exactly what we're getting here 🥲 and it's even worse when it's a $40 coffee table book like those are meant to look good!!!!! bring back graphic designers we're in a pop culture crisis

a thought that came to me regarding socrates!reader: i think they’re illiterate, partially because i imagine they come from a humble background where they weren’t given the opportunity to learn in childhood, and partially as a nod to socrates’ scepticism of writing as something which would weaken memory. they also simply don’t see a point in learning: their reasoning is something like, writing only serves to put down what is already thought — so as long as you converse with somebody and learn about their thoughts, you don’t actually learn anything new from reading, anyway. so, considering the effort and time they’d have to spend learning to read as opposed to how much they could discuss and learn in that same about of time, they don’t see it as worth it. (also, hearkening back to the socrates point — they have crazy good memory for things that have been said. if you put everything they keep in their head onto paper, it would be enough to fill a hefty stack of tomes in the library of philia. people are often shocked by their ability to recall minor details from conversations which happened months ago.)

anyway, they’re not ashamed of their illiteracy, but i do think it gets them a pretty bad rap among most of the students. like, ‘lmaooo that crazy person loiters around the biggest library in amphoreus but can’t even read. what a weird loser.’ in any case, it doesn’t help their reputation.

i feel like the way anaxa found out was pretty chill, though. like, he’d heard rumours around, but didn’t pay them any mind because he never pays that kind of circulating gossip any mind anyway. one day, reader just comes into his office/ lab or whatever, and says:

“good anaxagoras, would you do me a favour? i was given this message earlier today. could you tell me what it says?”

anaxa takes the slip of paper you’re holding out to him, raising a brow as he reads the words aloud. “‘hey, philosopher — if you’re so clever, write back to me when you get this message.’ they have also signed their name at the bottom.”

“well, that’s not particularly kind,” you remark, taking the message back. your eyes scan over the page as if you are trying to solve some kind of mysterious puzzle.

“you can’t read, then?” anaxa asks.

“no. i never learned, but i hardly see the point in doing so now, when i am already so advanced in years [for the record, they’re like, 20-something].” you turn an acute stare his way. “do you think less of me for it?”

he leans back in his chair and returns your gaze. “why should i?”

“there seems to be a widely-accepted association between the ability to read and the ability to participate in complex thought among those at the grove. it is not impossible that you share it.”

a dry laugh slips past his lips. “do you truly think i would partake in such misguided conceit?”

“i did not think so, no; but one can never rule out possibilities without sufficient confirmation.”

(and now whenever anybody gives reader shit for not being able to read, anaxa gives them the stink eye.)

I think it's good to remind binah now and again that you will be there for her to help her however you can and to comfort her during any times she needs

she hides her anguish well. too well for almost anyone to see, both a remnant of her Arbiter days and an innate part of herself. trapping everything in a gilded, rotting cage. like her heart, decaying and cold, yet treasured by you all the same. and in this way you hold her emotions close as well, cradling them like blooming flowers. she's never known such a tender embrace. a touch that fills her with warmth rather than disdain. you have to find her, initially. have to seek her out, quietly pull her away from the net of her silent despair. only with a bit of prompting, and only from you, does she finally open the lock and let her emotions speak their words to no one else but you, her hand grasping yours tightly

she cries for the first time, in your presence, silent and peaceful at the end

one day she starts coming to you, first. seeking you out, for she knows you're safe, you'll treat her gently when she needs it. Binah doesn't need to say a word, only hold out her arms and allows herself to melt. she clings rather than holds, swaying slowly back and forth and letting out a soft sigh of relief. your hands run through her hair, over her cheeks, up her spine. blissful, gentle. she places a small kiss on your shoulder, warming the space between you until nothing exists outside of your embrace. it doesn't. not right now. nothing matters but you and your tender love for her

when she's ready, she pulls away, a small smile on her face to murmur a sincere "Thank you"

I haven't read Six of Crows yet! I've been meaning to. I actually bought the first book last year and then straight up lost it on the subway lol. I did see a part of the tv series but I'm told it's a mish mash of several books so I'm not sure who the actual crows are. That sounds like a really cute idea for after I read it.
