Let's talk numbers, shall we?

Thesis: Sydcarmy draws in more viewers. Period.

We can all agree on the fact that The Bear S2 was the most Sydcarmy-friendly of the 2, even with Claire's addition, right? I mean, we can have different interpretations about certain scenes, but we can't deny they happened, i.e.: "I'm saying goodnight" storming out, the panic attack, and the under-the-table scene... etc.

@belassima got me thinking about numbers. I already had the feeling this was the case, but never really did the actual research till now and this is what I found:

And those were just preliminary figures in June last year from a week after S2's premiere.

The numbers obviously went up since. Astronomically so.

So it's undeniable, Sydcarmy brought in way more viewers last year than whatever viewers were already watching the show in 2022, because S2 was the most streamed one out of the 2 and it was inarguably the one with more Sydcarmy content out of the two. Full stop.

And that's not even taking into account SM activity. We all know that the #Sydcarmy movement is strong here on Tumblr, it's taking over TT, whereas Reddit and X seem to be 50%/50%, leaning more towards Sydcarmy on X, but only slightly. And YT is full-on Sydcarmy stand territory, although it doesn't really count because the anties do not create video edits of their Anti content, Sydcamy truthers do. So, it's like winning a 1 army war. Unfortunately, I don't have the actual figures, but they are quite easy to get, we just have to track the respective tags and keywords on each platform, I will not be performing such a time-consuming analytics assessment for free, of course. But feel free to jump into it, if you want to, I'd love to have those numbers too.

Conclusion: What's factual is that the Sydcarmy numbers on every platform and on streaming have only gone consistently up year after year since the show premiered in 2022.

IMO: I find it very hard to believe that Storer and/or the network/s don't care about this hard evidence, which is obviously equivalent to REVENUE.

these are all from projects that i have in a folder titled "on the bench" that i want to pretend i'll come back to, but.... some of these have been benched for so long and they're no longer fresh in my head so i fear they'll be abandoned forever. should also be mentioned that a lot of projects on the bench are literally just me making all the typography first and then losing inspo when i actually wanted to gif things.... usually by the time i do start, i change my mind about the type anyway. i also have so many abandoned gifs from other gifsets i've already posted but i'm not even sure where to begin searching so... here are some things!

one of the many gifs i already created for a prompt from @yellowjacketsoctober to put the show in a different genre. ironically, a prompt that i came up with for the event specifically to make this gifset but didn't even complete. i spent so many hours and so many days trying to gif this entire arc for these three with the intent to make it a heist drama set but after so long i realized i was just giffing exactly what happened in the show and it started to feel pointless. but at least here's a preview of something that i'll never finish. my trio of all time, can they commit more crimes together please! (should also be said that this folder is 44gb because i already saved all the caps + because these psds are so heavy... new years clean up for real)

i don't know what it is about lydia that makes it so hard for me to finish any set for her, but every time i try i seem to always lose the drive eventually (probably because twd in general just feels really uninteresting for me to blend, for some reason). from a 2022 spotify wrapped meme, i'm pretty sure i restarted this specific gifset so many different times, unhappy with the colors and the blends and the text and everything -- which is why there are two very different examples here. my girl of all time though i will finish something for her eventually (and maybe even this one, because this song is still so good for her).

one of the many gifs that were abandoned by my scream vi set for favorite slasher in october. when tumblr first changed the image upload limit to 30, i promised myself to never take advantage of that too much, but i severely underestimated how many moments i would want to include for this movie and i made so many other gifs for this set but ultimately cut them so i could try to tone it down - 18 gifs in this set still feels like a lot but i spent so much time on this set that it was hard to part with many more. anyway here's sam being the hottest final girl in the world and correct about everything.

i don't know how long this has been on the bench but it was definitely a project i started way before season 2 even aired. i think i just got stuck and wasn't sure where to go with it, but anyway her!

extra spoiler for @wyllhalsin but this was supposed to be a pride edit in june for one of my favorite lgbt characters of all time. this show's camera movements nearly makes it impossible to blend anything so i lost the drive, but i will come back for felix someday (and for coty, obviously this set was for him).

Welcome to "SHINE" an upcoming next top model competition, where every week you'll submit an edit based upon a prompt! You are talented and the world needs to see you...SHINE!

The competition will span from the 15th of May-17th of July.

Hey yalls, guess who wrote a Danny Phantom one-shot (4k words) that I'm extremely proud of!!! Even if ya ain't into DP, I'd appreciate if you read it & dropped a kudos and commented, because I'm honestly in love with this so much!!!!

Focuses on a confrontation between Danny and Wesley Weston involving Danny's secret identity woooo~

Warning for; panic attacks, descriptions of inhuman appearances (Eldritch!Danny my beloved), & mentions of death!

It's the longest fic I've written to date (I thought a multichapter WIP I wrote in 2018 was longer. I was wrong. That was only 3.5k), and I'm thrilled at the outcome!!

I'm the kind of person who enjoys their own writing (and forgets what I've written after a few days), so when I read it over pre-posting, I was smiling and giggling the whole time. I even screamed from excitement at it (I was on call, and my friends gotta hear me freaking out as I read my own writing XD)!

I just discovered «Ridgeside Village» (a Stardew Valley mod) and oh my gods it looks so good!!! The mod adds so much to explore, both new areas and new villagers!!!

Plus, it's compatible with Stardew Valley Expanded (Expanded edits the existing valley for the most part, while Ridgeside Village adds a whole new map outside of Pelican Town)!!!

(If y'all like SDV Expanded, or mods that do similar things, please check out Ridgeside Village if you haven't already!!!)

It's kinda sad to know a good handful of people who've played Stardew Valley haven't played (or heard of) Harvest Moon. Maybe it's just a generational thing, but whenever I've gotten my friends into SDV, I always ask if they know Harvest Moon first. Literally always no.

ANYWAYS if you like Stardew Valley, please check out the Story Of Seasons line (the new name for Harvest Moon games), the Harvest Moon games before DS, or Harvest Moon A New Beginning (3DS)

OR if you like the fighting in SDV as well as the farming bits, I've heard the Rune Factory series is pretty good :D

Sometimes I wish I could love in the way others could.

To look at someone and just know. To feel the warmth and joy, and desire to be with someone forever.

But my feeling of love comes in different forms.

Sitting outside and playing my ukulele, while the squirrels and chipmunks watch, and the birds chirp along.

The tickle of eyelashes blinking against cheeks, and the fuzzy giggles that brew inside.

Telling someone a secret which you're sure they would never speak to you again over, only for them to tell you it's okay, and that they still care about you.

A stray (or just sassy) cat letting you pet them, no matter how brief the moment may be.

Walking around a night-fallen city with your friend, illuminated by the neon signs, and high on life.

Doodling something that turns out even a little better than you were expecting, brightening up the rest of your day.

Reading a story that overwhelms you with so many feelings that you have to scream, because the world deserves to know how you feel.

Maybe I can't feel love in the way others might. I think that's alright, though, because I notice all the other ways I feel love. And I think I love that even more.

Okay I'm having some messy thoughts, but I really need to think aloud here.

Werewolf by Night, to some degree, is about family and the legacies it carries.

First we have Elsa, a member of the Bloodstone family that is essentially an outcast. Originally destined to inherit the bloodstone, she's now forced to compete with the other hunters for it. We don't get full details why she left or how she left (though in most of the movie we have a lot of context missing, for the best in my opinion). We just know she did and she's estranged. No longer worthy enough as a daughter or no longer enough of a daughter to be worthy enough for the stone.

But still she fights for it and claims that it is rightfully hers.

Then we have Jack. Jack arrives to what he likely assumes to be a normal funeral (I say this because while the other hunters appeared in hunting gear, he wore a dark, probably black, suit (EDIT: it's not black, but it's still a suit)) wearing Dia de los Muertos makeup. Makeup that is best described in the scene where he says it's to honor his ancestors. Interestingly, the other hunter he speaks to is a little.. dismissive towards that reasoning, let's say. Jack, based on facial expressions alone, is put off by that, but doesn't say much.

Later when he's stuck with Elsa, he discusses family. Saying that family is like an atmosphere constantly there. Saying that sometimes you think you can do one thing to make yourself different from them. Obviously this is directed towards Elsa who is currently sitting in front of her dead relatives. Who's trying to get the bloodstone herself for... whatever reason. Clearly she's not involved with her father anymore. Maybe this is thing that she'll change? Maybe she'll break the cycle by having the bloodstone and... what? Does she know?

And what about Jack. He's literally saying all this in Dia de los Muertos makeup!! In the comics, the werewolf curse is something he received through lineage. So is that the cycle he's trapped in? To be the monster his family made him? After centuries (?) of living, he's still not at peace with this curse. Maybe he's just given up on trying to fix any of it. Maybe he's trying to get Elsa to see something he thinks he's already figured out.

Oh, and the cage scene. He says "once". Not to bring in comics again But. Do you think that once was his sister? He clearly holds the memory close enough that he immediately tries to use it to protect Elsa. This is something he dwells on constantly. He just knew to try to repeat it the moment he realized the danger.

Elsa gets the bloodstone like she wanted. He doesn't kill Elsa like he feared he would. He frees Ted, the person he references as family and later a friend. Did they get that one change he was talking about? Can they break the cycle? Do the even know what part of the cycle they're trying to break?

... I can't help but think about how his makeup is almost completely faded at the end of the film.

Editing Tips for Beginning Editors

This is a guest post written by Adrian Harley.

Congratulations! If you’re reading this, I’m willing to bet you already have a lot of the skills you need to be an editor. Even among full-time professionals, a lot of editing skill comes from reading a ton—you get an “eye” for when a sentence just doesn’t look right. The more you read professionally edited work, the better you get at it. (Fanfiction is incredible, obviously. But fanfiction has its own quirks, and the grammar and punctuation can vary, so I’m not confident recommending it as a way to brush up your instinctive grasp of when a sentence “looks right.”)

The specifics of what you do as an editor can vary a lot depending on what you’re editing and who you’re editing for, so in this post, I’ll be covering some of the basic principles that I think will be helpful no matter what type of editing you do. Broadly, I’ll be going over language-related tips and profession-related tips. 

Language

I won’t be going over the nuts and bolts of grammar here, as a zillion good guides to it already exist online. Grammar Girl is my go-to free resource, and a lot of grammar and punctuation questions can be easily answered online or in a style guide from your library. I looked up the rules for commas a LOT in my first years of editing, and I still have to double-check them sometimes. A lot of the fiddly details differ between guides (how to write a.m. and p.m.; serial comma), but the nuts and bolts of grammar and punctuation stay the same across guides. 

Professionally, those fiddly details are a big chunk of editing. Do you write out numbers less than 20? Less than 10? Do you capitalize titles like “President” all the time or only in certain situations? There’s no one right answer, which is one of the many reasons there’s no “right guide” to editing. A style guide will decide many of these questions for you. If you pick up editing as a profession, your employer will most likely have a style guide in mind. You may want to pick one for yourself if you do freelance editing. That way, you won’t have to re-decide on every job, and if you get repeat clients, you’ll be sure their text is consistent across all their documents. A “series bible” for fiction works on similar principles. 

Whether you’re looking at those fiddly details or at the big picture, one principle of editing is to never take anything for granted. Someone says there’s five ancient orbs needed to defeat the dragon? You’d better count the orbs. Make sure every proper noun in the story (names of people, places, things) is spelled the same every single time. This is the kind of thing you’ll get quizzed on if you ever apply for a professional editing gig. Every editing job I’ve ever applied to has an “editing test” of at least a page, and it usually has at least one of those errors (if not both).

Another major thing to watch out for is colloquialisms, especially ones that mean multiple things. A short list of common errors I see:

“Since” should only relate to the passage of time; it does not mean “because.”

“While,” again, should only refer to time—two things happening simultaneously. “But,” “although,” “whereas,” and others are good substitutes for the other sense.

“Due to” does not mean “because of,” it means “caused by” (and I’ve seen some editors argue to not even use it for “caused by” and to only use it for when something is owed to someone).

“If” will often need to be replaced with “whether.”

Obviously with dialogue, that’s a whole nother story, but be careful about these in narration, even with a colloquial narrative. They can introduce unintentional double meanings.

When you’re moving from basic accuracy to style, you’ll often need to “tighten up” the language. This might be something you’re used to doing in your own writing. This doesn’t mean all prose should be sparse! But as an editor, part of your job is making sure that every word is contributing something, no matter whether the sentence is flowery or stark. One exercise is to go through and see if you can cut one word from every sentence. Depending on what type of editing you do, you’ll have different “filler words” to look out for. My personal demon is “just,” so I always do a search for that when I’m revising my own work. In my day job, the word “provide” often signals a clunky phrase that could be condensed into a single, better verb (e.g., “provides assistance” vs. “helps”). 

You’ll look for a lot as you edit, so don’t feel like you have to do it all at once. A simple search can make sure you’ve caught issues like “while” and “since.” Other issues are best solved in their own read-through. For me, I try to do a read-through specifically for passive voice. I often skip over passive voice on my all-purpose read because, well, the sentence makes sense, doesn’t it? So my eye simply doesn’t catch it if I’m not on the lookout. As you edit, you’ll figure out what process works best for you.

And to wrap up the language section—checklists are your friend! I used to have a post-it of all the things I knew I struggled with, and I’d systematically search the document for those trip-ups after I did my first read. You can customize your own checklist with whatever snags give you trouble.

Professionalism

A huge part of editing as a professional is in how you interact with other people. Your whole job is telling people they’re wrong, after all, and you often have no control over whether they’ll listen to you. Everything you can do to make the criticism easier for them helps!

My favorite “one weird trick” that my first boss taught me is to turn every criticism into a question. If you’re suggesting a significant revision, “How about…?” is one of my favorite leads. If you have no idea what’s going on, do your best to figure out what might be causing the issue, then form a question around that. “Are there missing words here?” is kinder and more useful than “Huh?”

Essentially, your role as an editor is to advocate for the reader. This “reader stand-in” role can help frame critique as well. Will the reader understand this? If you’re in one of the more-technical editing jobs, that question may be completely necessary. As an editor for scientific research, I’m often editing documents meant for people who know way more about the subject matter than I do. The framing of “the reader” is also a useful tool in your toolbox for fiction. You may be editing something that you are not the target audience for. Or, on the other end of the scale, you may know without question that you’re reading something incomprehensible. The polite device of “the reader” helps add a level of depersonalization to the critique.

Unsurprisingly, for editing, communication is key before you even start work. “Editing” covers a huge range of possibilities. Make sure you and the author are on the same page. Do they want a proofread—only correcting glaring errors? Do they want you to improve the phrasing of sentences? It can go all the way up to practically rewriting the thing, if you’re working at a corporation and the authors aren’t professionals. This conversation beforehand will let you know whether you should make “artistic” suggestions as you read, whether you need to stick with nuts and bolts, or something in between.

If the author says they only need a proofread and you discover the whole thing is terrible, that’s when some tactful emails come into play. Never start doing a higher-level edit unless you’ve talked about it with the author first. You have much better odds of an affirmative if they feel like they’re collaborating with you–that you’re both in it together to make the best document possible. As far as the tactful emails go, be kind and be specific. If you have examples of what you’d like to correct, throw those in. It helps the author know what to expect and make an informed decision.

And sometimes the author says no, and that’s okay! You must wash your hands of it. It’s not your name on the thing, and if you don’t put it in your resume, it never will be (fresh out of college, I worked on a couple truly awful novels that nobody will ever know I worked on). Perfectionism is HARD to overcome, I know, but accepting the errors gets easier with practice.

And finally, if you’re still wondering, “Am I cut out to be an editor?” I would recommend the words of Neil Gaiman. In his excellent “Make Good Art” speech, he says that as a freelance artist, you need to do good work, do it on time, and be pleasant to work with. And then, he adds, “You don’t even need all three! Two out of three is fine.”I recommend the whole thing if you ever want to battle imposter syndrome, because the same tenets apply to editing. At least I think they do. You don’t need to be the perfect editor—nobody is. But I guarantee that you have most of what you need already, and I hope this has helped.

Formatting Tweaks to Help Your Typesetter Have a Great Day

The last few weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of editing, which also means I’ve been doing a lot of small changes to ensure that the documents are print and e-book ready. Preparing manuscripts involves doing a lot of tiny, fiddly tweaks to make sure that spelling, grammar, and formatting are uniform across all the stories in an anthology, are accurate to the authors’ intentions, and look nice in all the formats we’ll be offering (print, PDF, ePub, and Mobi). None of the changes are complicated, but making them all is surprisingly time consuming—I usually spend about 30 minutes “cleaning up” each story with modifications that are largely invisible to a writer and reader, but still essential to produce a polished finished book.

Each Press and Publisher will handle these formatting things in slightly different ways—while some of these (such as “when do I use a hyphen vs. an en dash vs. an em dash?”) others are publisher-discretion. If you are submitting a manuscript and want to look like you’ve really, really paid attention, consider making some of these changes yourself—but make sure you check if the place you’re submitting to has a public style guide first, and if they do, anything they say in their style guide takes precedence! (Duck Prints Press doesn’t have a guide yet—we’ve been working on one, but it keeps getting back-burnered in favor completing more timely tasks). 

This post is written from our point of view—which is to say, I wrote it specifically for how we at DPP handle these formatting matters—but it can provide some general guidelines, especially if you are submitting to a publication that hasn’t provided a style guide. Even if what you do based on this guide doesn’t match what they do, at least by being consistent in your own submission, you demonstrate that you were paying attention! (But: NEVER do any of the below if it contradicts the submission information and/or style guide provided by a different publisher!!)

Note that to really do most of these tweaks, you’ll want to use an actual word processor. Google docs doesn’t have the functionality for the most fiddly bits. Despite its downsides, DPP currently uses Microsoft Office 365, and this guide is primarily written with Word in mind. If you also use Microsoft, here’s a couple quick tutorials—you’ll need to know how to do these two things in order to do…all the rest.

Tutorial 1: Inserting Special Characters

1. Go to the “Insert” Menu

2. Go to “Insert Symbol”

3. If, like me, you use the same 4 special characters over and over, the symbol you’re looking for will most likely be in the “recently used” list that pops up. But, if it’s not there, pick “More Symbols.” That opens a screen that looks like this:

While you could scroll through this list until you find what you want, it’s much easier to go to the bottom boxes I circled in red, where it says “Character Code.” Enter the 4-digit-and-letter code for the character you want. This way, you can be sure you actually get the character you want. Make sure that the “from” field matches the code type you’re using—I pretty much entirely use unicode, and that’s what I reference/include numbers for in this post. (Usually, googling “(name of the character you want) unicode” will get you the number.)

5. Note that not every character is available in every font; if you want to be sure you can access the maximum number of characters, I recommend using Arial or Calibri.

Tutorial 2: Turning on Mark-up

1. Go to the “Home” menu

2. In the “Paragraph” section, find the ¶ option; if your menu is drop-down it might be called “Show/Hide ¶” (in Word, it can also be turned on with ctrl + * )

Why coax the story out of your head

You can't keep all that detailed info in your head all the time.

You owe it to yourself to have it recorded. In scenes. So you can read it and enjoy it for yourself for comfort in rainy days.

Cause wordcount goals and writing updates are so cool. They feel all professional.

Brag about having actually written.

Ticking off wordcounts, chapters, scenes and arcs feels very fulfilling. Like scratching things off from the to-do list. So good.

You will never learn what your writing weaknesses are. Then you can't join those cool sympathetic discussions with other writers about "yeah I always do that and I forget that stuff..."

You will also never get nice tips from the field how to manage that.

You can know all the theory you want, but you will never improve on those weaker things, if you don't know what they are.

You can give meta behind-the-scenes-info. Writing this made me feel xxx. Working on that chapter made my heart go all xxx.

Posting cool quotes and snippets out of your writing. VALIDATION

People can read and fall in love in the story with you. <3

Fans of the worlds and people inside your head!

Connection. Understanding. People who like your writing will likely have many common interests and tastes.

Finishing stuff is HUGE confidence boost.

No word is ever wasted, cause you are learning.

Rereading your story when you forget the details. Serisouly, worth millions.

Focus on the content, not on the style. Focus on what and not on the how. We are all natural storytellers with excellent practice in our heads. Use that. Be proud of that.

You probably won't notice the imperfections first. Enjoy it! It's perfect little baby. Once you notice them, celebrate! You have grown! You are a better writer now!

Experience. That pesky little thing you need with skills by, y'know, actually doing them.

Stories are the best way for the brain to transmit information. The most natural, enjoyable, easiest way. Human brains are wired for it. So the greatest way to explain your awesome world/characters/plot/themes? Show them through the story. In scenes.

Three drafts with their respective purposes:

Content. Does it make sense? Are the emotions, character arcs and themes coming through how you intended? Is it understandable?

Structure. How is the pacing? Is everything logically connected together?

Style. Editing and fine tuning. How does it sound? Is there a better word? Is the sentence structure varied enough?

This is how you can measure your story. This has to function. The rest is topic, genre and taste.

How to coax the story out of your head

The key is to find the process that suits you. Duh.

This is actually way more complicated than it sounds and requires some serious autoethnographic exploration and empirical experimentation.

Remember, there are no wrong or right answers. Whatever works for you is the best method. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Writing is serious work. Don't let others belittle that, they obviously don't understand how hard a commitment that is.

Writing requires time. Space. Quiet. No disturbtions. No obligations jumping out the corner.

Sacrifaces of things, easier things you would rather be doing. Visits. That new Netflix series. Scrolling through social media. Reading another writing advice book.

Don't strain yourself. Even if you are in the flow. If you do, you will power down, exhaust yourself and are less likely to start. Your brain will go all defensive and won't allow you to get back into something as straining again.

The hardest things for most people is to start. So don't fret about starting. Idea to try: surprise yourself with sudden jumping to the keyboard and writing. Don't overthink. Overthinking is paralyzing.

Perfectionism is more common in people than the opposite. Everyone wants to do it well. It's the enemy of creation, spontaneity and playfulness.

Let the pressure go woozh. Ideas: Write the worst thing you possibly can. Freewrite. Call it the shitty first draft. If that's too evaluative for you (it's for me anyway, brr) call it the Zero draft. The no pressure draft.

Listen. Redrafts are normal. They are the sign of professional writers. Students and people who don't know how to write go with their first drafts, all vulnerable and unpolished, because they have waited that long or can't look at it anymore or don't want to permit themselves to be mistaken.

Professional writers know there are at least 3 stages to every text. Zero draft where you play and create. Second draft, where you put things in order to make sense. Third draft, where you let out the perfectionist who fine tunes the details. (Use however many more drafts you need).

The edits don't mean it was necessarily bad or wrong. It means the wip could shine even more. Try seeing it as underlining, polishing, highlighting.

The first drafts don't have to be shitty. I'm personally not a fan of this saying, cause usually they contain the most magic. We should value our first drafts for what they are. Sweat and creation, collection of fun and work.

There are outliners and pantsers. They come in all shades in between. Most people use a mix of both, wandering somewhere on the spectrum.

Thing to try: Freewrite about your day before writing as a way to 1) clear your thoughts 2) get into the flow 3) warm up exercise 4) to get rid of the respect before the blank page. Cause you have, y'know, already written something today.

Some people like reading before writing. Sets your brain for words and sentences and nice phrases.

Many people use rituals of their choosing to set their brain into the writing mode. Specific drink, position, smell, place, time, music, reading a similar book, reading what you have written, rereading the outline or notes from last session, etc. This is how you can create a habit. This is how you can get inspired "on command". Trian your muse to show up, when it suits you.

Positive mindset and good mood are way more productive than negative one. Fear, stress, unease all hinder you. Try to have the most relaxed attitude you can. Positive associations with writing are crucial.

When it stops being fun, change something. Take a break. Find the problem and fix it.

Listen to yourself. Trust your brain to connect things and figure them out.

If you are blocked or writing feels too much like a chore, work on figuring out the why. Freewriting is (again, I know) a great way to do this. Let yourself write whatever crosses your mind. Follow your thoughts and see what comes out. Maybe you hate the scene you are writing. Maybe you have a plot point you only feel like you need to have there, but don't actually want there. Be honest and raw with yourself.

When you feel like something has to be there, it's usually just holding you back. Leave it out. Jump over it and come back to to reevaluate it later. It's your work, your story, your tastes. You have all the right in the world to include things you want there. Don't feel like you have to do anything you don't want to.

To try out: Montage writing. Write out of order. Put the things in order later. Jump with your thoughts to any scene/part you want. Put in brackets for things you will figure out/add later.

Lots of novels were created at "walks". This means the writers spend lots of time thinking about their story in detail while on long walks, and then just threw everything they figured out onto the page.

Quick drafting works well to get the most from intense focus on your story and writing it all down as fast as possible. Quick writing also helps to hinder the inner editor - the creep can't keep up if you write fast to keep up with your thoughts.

The speed is really individual though, depending on numerous factors, so don't compare yourself to others and listen to yourself instead.

Depending on your process, speed and care at the first stage, the first draft requires different levels of editing. Not all first drafts have to be shitty and not all of them require the same amount of rework. I repeat, first drafts don't have be shitty, first drafts don't have to be shitty...(the need for editing does not make it a requirement by any means!)

Writing is a physically difficult acitivy. It requires lots of sitting without movement. Don't underestimate the strain it puts on your body.

Types of intelligence for your OCs

What kind of intelligence does your character posses? Based on theory of multiple intelligences, these are some ideas what kind of smarts your characters might posses that aren’t the typical academic or street smarts. 

1. Visual-spatial (space smart)

These people are good at visualizing things, seeing in 3D, being able to imagine how things look even out of sight from the information they have about it. They are good with directions, maps, charts and pictures. Eye for drawing, patterns and puzzles. 

Especially useful for: architects, engineers, artists, pilots

2. Linguistic-verbal (word smart)

The ability to use words well, when writing and speaking. Typical strenghts are telling stories, memorizing information, love for reading, skill with words, debating and persuasive skills, adept at explaining complicated subjects. Also tend to be great at languages. 

Especially useful for: writers, journalists, lawyers, teachers, public speakers

3. Logical (reasoning smart)

Not necessarily but possibly mathematical, these people are great at reasoning, pattern recognition and logical analysis. Enjoyment for abstract thinking and ideas, excellent problem-solving skills and logical argumentation are other common traits. Pattersn, categories, relationships. 

Especially useful for: mathematicians, accountants, scientists, and detectives.

4. Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart)

Great hand-eye cordination, physical movement, often skilled at sports, dancing and creating things with their hands. Learn and remember rather by doing than listening or reading. Sense of timing and mind-body union excellent. 

Especially useful for: dancers, sculptors, actors, athletes, surgeons, crafts people, soldiers, police officers

5. Musical (sound smart)

Sensitive listeners. Thinking in patterns, recognizing rhythms, notes and melodies, good at remembering tunes, these people often enjoy singing or playing instruments. Often show great understanding of musical structure and know quickly when they hear someone going off-key. 

Especially useful for: musical teachers, composers, musicians, 

6. Interpersonal (people smart)

These people are very good at understanding and interacting with others. From verbal to non-verbal communication, they are proficient at assessing motivations, moods and desires of others and seeing things from multiple perspectives. Great communicators, create positive relationships with others easily and solve group dynamics and group conflicts well. Also enjoy discussions, debates and teamwork. 

Especially useful for: psychologists, counselors, salespeople, politicians, philosophers, teachers, managers, team leaders

7. Intrapersonal (self smart)

The opposite of interpersonal smarts is the intrapersonal intelligence, where people are very in tune with themselves and their feelings. They are honest with themselves, enjoy self-reflection, analysing theories and ideals, love daydreaming, and show great self-awareness and assessment of their own strenghts and weaknesses. 

Especially useful for: writers, philosophers, theorits, scientists

Bonus types: 

8. Creative (ideas smart) 

People that show exceptional curiousity, get inspired by little things around them and connect ideas and concepts in an unsual way. It’s a more feeling-based, spontaneous type of intelligence that gets less recognition, but brings immense benefits in all fields. 

Especially useful for: artists, marketers, scientists, concept artists

9. Abstract (concept smart)

Drawn to abstract ideas, these people enjoy deep discussions, don’t like to settle on one truth and ask questions that have no easy or no answer at all. Connecting, conceptualizing, analysing, listening and putting things together, they are great at seeing things from a distance, seeing the whole and not just the pieces. 

Especially useful for: scientists, philosophers, researchers, theorists, designers, analysts

Chris Evans x Black (pregnant) Female Reader

Summary: It's no secret that Chris wants to be a daddy. He's said it in many different interviews and blogs before. He just never expected the mother of his child to be someone he didn't know, let alone fuck.

Warnings: 18+ angst, mentions of alcohol abuse and cheating/ malpractice, talk of abortions!

Note: If this gets a few hits and is well received I can make it a mini-series. If not I'll leave it one and done.

Another school week had come to a close and you still hadn't been able to have a proper meal without the aid of ginger ale by your side. your advanced placement section had just left, and most of the high school was clearing out or joining their afterschool activities. You sighed packing your books and laptop away in your tote bag. Before you could shut off your desktop you heard a soft knock on your door.

You turned around and saw Aria Evans standing in your doorway with her basketball uniform on. She was not only brilliant at academics but in sports as well. Basketball in the fall, soccer in the spring. She was guaranteed to get into a stunning university.

"Aria.' You smiled. "Is everything alright?"

"Yeah, I, um, I was just checking in on you. You know, from a few weeks ago." Her eyes wandered to your stomach which had started to grow at this point causing you to wrap your arms around yourself.

"I'm fine Aria, thank you." You smiled softly.

"Do you know who my uncle is?" She blurted.

you looked down at your shoes, you turned, and finished packing your bag. "No." You lied.

"I don't mean to be in your business, but I overheard my mom and him talking.' She played with the hem of her uniform. "I just wanted to know if it was true."

You sucked in a deep breath, shaking as you expelled it through your nose. "Aria, is this really an appropriate question for you to be asking me?"

"No, I guess not.' She kissed her teeth, walking towards your door. "I just thought you'd be honest is all."

You turned around to face her. "What is there to be honest about if you already know?" You dropped your arms letting your growing belly be on display.

Aria shook her head and pushed open your classroom doors, disappearing into the hallway. You sighed, throwing your hands over your face. Now that a teenager knew your secret you were certain everyone would soon after.

Chris was still shocked you had agreed to get coffee with him after last week's fiasco. This time he wanted it to be just the two of you. No managers, no lawyers, no drama—hopefully.

Chris had gotten a small corner of the cafe for you two to occupy. Now all he had to do was wait for you. it hadn't been long until he saw you walk in. You had your phone in your hand and you were bundled up in scarfs and a long coat, sporting a pair of boots that made your frame look slimmer.

You looked around the cafe obviously looking for him. He took the liberty to bring you to your table. Chris walked over to you and placed a gently hand on your elbow.

“Hi.” He said, a smile could be captured from underneath his Boston baseball cap.

“Hi.” You picked off a curl that hand stuck onto your lipgloss.

Chris smiled softly at you. “We’re over here.’ He felt you stiffen. “By we’re, I mean you and I.” He reassured.

“Right.’ You chuckled softly, following behind him.

“I didn’t know what you’d like. So I left the menu for you.” Chris groaned, sitting down.

“Probably just a ginger ale. I can’t stomach much else.” You explained, feeling a gaging sensation even now.

“That bad, huh?” He asked, feeling bad for you.

“Mhm.’ You nodded, focused on finding a waitress before you puked everywhere.

“Have you told anybody?” Chris sipped on his coffee that was already running cold.

“What?” You turned to look at him.

“About the pregnancy.’ He sat his cup down gently. “I wouldn’t want you going through it alone.”

“Um.’ You coughed to keep your vomit at bay. “Just my best friend Vada. My sister is at LSU, and my mom.’ You paused, not ready to go that deep with Chris yet. “Just my best friend.”

“But I know you’ve told people.” You said finally flagging down a waitress, begging for a bottle of ginger ale.

“How do you know that?” Chris’s eyes bunched together.

You pushed your lips together making them turn white, before opening them to speak. “I teach your niece aria. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a joy and one of my brightest student’s. But she did ask me if I was pregnant by you the other day.”

“God.” Chris shook his head. “I’m sorry about her, she must have heard me and my sister talking.”

“It’s fine.’ You smiled shortly, downing your first sip of ginger ale. “So what did you want to talk about?’ You burped. “Sorry.”

Chris stifled a laugh. “Just the baby, I suppose.” Chris had so much he wanted to talk about, but he wanted to take it slow with you. He could tell you were still holding back.

“What about the baby?” You asked, finally not feeling goosebumps when you said that word. You were finally bonding with your little ball of a mistake and you kind of liked it—just hoped it would stop making you sick.

“Well maybe we should set up an ultrasound, and get you some prenatal vitamins. Maybe even a home birth nurse, and a doula for after you give birth.” Chris rambled.

You took a sip of your ginger ale, laughing as your lips attached to the bottle. “Someone did their research.’ You chuckled, Chris doing the same. “I just can’t afford those things and I’m already paying high insurance for something unrelated.’ You sighed. “Let’s just start at the ultrasounds and store bought prenatal vitamins—and I’ll only have pizza twice a week.”

Chris looked you up and down, you really didn’t even think of him as an option in getting you those things. He wanted the two of you to be a team on this. He needed you to know you can trust him and he wants the best for you and his baby.

“Well, I mean I could always pay for it.’ Chris took a sip of his coffee, his blue eyes staring at you through the heat that seeped from his cup.

“Ha.’ You snorted. “That’s some really expensive stuff.’ You pulled out your phone typing away. “A doula alone is anywhere from eight hundred to twelve hundred a night.” You shook your head.

“Well I’m not on a regular salary.” He said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” You folded your arms.

Chris sat his cup down, and leaned back spreading his arms on the cushion of the couch. “Just means if we want something for our baby, I can get it.” He said, with a rough low voice. “You’re just gonna have to trust me.”

“We’ll see.’ You said, looking him up and down. “I’ll set an ultrasound for next weekend, with my new gynecologist by the way.” You rolled you eyes. “Have you done anything with Perez yet? I can’t afford to.”

“My teams working on something, she’ll get what’s coming for her. We’ll cover your butt too so don’t worry about it.” Chris said, not wanting you to stress about it.

“Right.’ You finished your bottle.

The moment got quiet for you and Chris and the air around you began to thicken as he stared at you with those ocean eyes. Reading you. Studying you. You shifted uncomfortably coughing and moving your eyes from his direct line of sight.

He spoke. “Do you still have the pills?”

You knew this question was coming. You knew how much Chris wanted this, how obviously he feared with one choice it could be over for him. It was your turn to read Chris and he looked worried, every part of his firm body softened praying your truth matched his want—his hope.

You swallowed, tucking your lips inward. “I flushed them.” You admitted.

You could hear Chris audibly gasp, it was a sound of relief. “Why?” He asked, feeling his hope rising as you spoke.

You sighed, crossing your legs the tip of your boot touching his knee cap. “Because I want this.”

Chris smiled brightly, almost too brightly. God, he wanted to hug you. But he wouldn’t. It felt like something he could maybe sneak in after you had given birth. But for now the relationship still felt professional.

“I’m so glad to here you say that.” His smile still visible under his hat.

“You really want kids?” You asked him.

“A big Boston family.” He said.

“Well I’m only giving you one, so cherish it.” You laughed a bit.

“Right.’ Chris laughed along. “And you?”

“Hm?’ You tilted your head to the side.

“Want any kids?” He asked.

“No, but I guess I do now.” You smiled somberly, rubbing your growing belly.

Chris sat up looking down at your sweater covered womb. He almost reached for it, but he didn’t want to violate. “May I?” He blurted.

Your eyes went wide. Did you let him touch you? You almost wanted to say no. But this was his child too. “Yes.” You said hesitantly.

Chris’s hand reached out slowly toward yours belly, as he gently placed it onto you lower abdomen. He couldn’t feel much physically— but spiritually he felt his child and he loved their first touch. He smiled as his eyes watered. Chris was really going to be a daddy.

“You can’t feel much yet.” You said, looking down at Chris’s large hand.

“I know. It’s firm though.” He moved his hand.

“It isn’t always like that, so I guess that’s something.”

“Why do you touch it? Your belly?” He asked.

You were starting to notice that Chris was full of questions. “Just a comfort, knowing I’m not all alone anymore. Someone’s here with me.” You were honest.

Chris nodded and the room fell silent again for you two. Mostly because there was so much both of you wanted to say but were just to afraid to say, and you’d already rested enough water for today it felt.

“I’m going to order my Uber.” You spoke up, breaking the ice.

“Uber?” Chris asked. “I can drive you.”

“No, no.’ You waved him off. “It’s fine.”

“Y/n,” Chris placed his warm hand on your knee it jump slightly. “I insist, Ubers aren’t safe anyways.”

“You don’t live too far from here anyways.” He said.

Your eyebrows furrowed. “How do you know where I live?” You lowered your phone.

Chris’s eyes went wide. Embarrassed he had let that slip. “Well when I needed to find you I hired a private investigator and I guess he went really private.” He said watching your face fold in confusion.

“You hired someone to find me?” You stood up, trying to keep your voice to a minimum.

Chris stood up too. “Well yes, how else could I have found you.” He justified.

“I’m gonna wait for my uber outside.” You shook your head, tucking your coat to your body.

Chris rolled his eyes. Boy you were a stubborn one. He followed after you catching the door you had slammed, not knowing if it was intentional or not.

“Hey,’ he jogged toward you. “Y/n, cancel it.” He sighed, holding his hands on his hips.

“Why?” You asked, not looking at him.

“Because I’m taking you home.” He pushed his Audis keys making the car light up from across the parking lot.

“You don’t have to take care about me because I’m pregnant.” You said, shoving a piece of spearmint gum into your mouth.

“I do care about you.”

You laughed, popping a bubble with your gum. “You don’t even know me.”

“Maybe I want to get to know you.’ He said, rolling his keys in his hands.

You let another bubble pop, looking him up and down. God he was mulish. “Fine.”

“Fine what?” Chris almost grinned.

“Fine you can’t take me home.”

Chris smiled. “Perfect.”

The ride had been quiet so far, neither of you know what to say to feel the void. Honestly your Uber would have been more enjoyment than this. You had to say his car did drive nicely, and was oddly clean.

You snickered as you looked out the passenger window, the Boston trees morphing from their summer shades to their fall ones.

“What’s so funny.” Chris asked.

“You.”

Chris looked over at you for a brief moment before focusing back on the rode. “And how am I funny, Ms. Y/n?”

“Your car, it’s just really clean.’ You picked the fuzz off your cardigan. “Does someone do it for you?”

Chris laughed, fixing his baseball cap on his head. “What you think I can’t clean my own car?”

“No, it just looks really clean, like really clean.” You expressed

“And your car isn’t?”

“I don’t have a car.”

Chris frowned. “Oh, I didn’t realize.”

“Wouldn’t call an Uber if u had one.”

“Maybe I can help you with that.” Chris coughed, rubbing the back of his neck.

The car stopped at a red light and so did you heart. This was exactly what you didn’t want to happen. Chris get whim off your financial short comings and wanting to fix everything for you. You didn’t need his help with anything but the baby.

“I can manage.” You grumbled, crossing your arms.

Chris sighed. “I didn’t mean it like that.” He rubbed a hand over his full beard. “I just meant I want to help out where I can.”

“I’ve been saving up from my other job for a while now.’ You said. “No need.”

Chris’s eyes bunched together. When him and his p.i had worked together they hadn’t found you had another job. And they out found almost everything about you. “You have another job besides teaching?” He turned into your small apartment complex.

“Yeah.” You felt the car jolt as he put it into park.

“Where? If you don’t mind me asking.” He turned his body slightly towards you.

You gathered your purse, pushing open his door. “A bar in downtown Boston. I work Saturday and Sunday nights.”

“Why?”

You laughed, holding your belly as you swung out of his low seating car. “Because not all of us can be multimillionaire actors like you.”

Chris swallowed hard. “Right. Well can you text me when you set the appointment, I want to be there.” Chris smiled.

You nodded. “Thank you.’ You said, fumbling with your keys. “For the ride.”

“Anytime.” He smiled. Watching you as you unlocked the door and entered the complex.

Chris released a heavy breath putting his car in drive and pulling off. He hated that you were working two jobs and had no car. He knew it wasn’t his place but he wanted your pregnancy to be comfortable and smooth sailing. Not filled with stress, he wanted to do something for you— a nice jester, he just hoped you didn’t take it wrong.

Burn (Bakugou x Reader)

A/N: So... I'm back with another story... I've been going through some stuff since winter and this was the best way I could vent some of my feelings out, so just let me have this please. I wrote it in like January and stepped away from it for months so I could edit it without being in that same emotional mindset, so I hope you guys enjoy it still!

"Babe, what are you doing?"

I hear his shuffling footsteps behind me as I'm rolling a small lump of dough in my hands.  For a moment, I wince because I already know I'm going to get a lecture and Bakugo likes to get his full 9 hours of sleep like a responsible person.  But I don't look at him, instead choosing to concentrate on getting just the right amount of dough into my hands.  "I'm baking cookies," I answer simply.

He groans.  "It's 4 in the morning, why the HELL are you baking cookies?"

I hesitate placing the balled dough on my kitchen scale for a beat before returning to my rhythm.  There are so many ways to answer that question, many of them would worry him.  Hell, they worry me.  So many answers that would require an unraveling of complex emotions that I'd rather not think about, nor would I prefer to visit right now because I don't feel like crying in the middle of the kitchen at this time of night.  But at the same time, the fact that I am making cookies at a nocturnal time is cause for worry.

It means it's getting bad.  Again.

I sigh, plopping the neatly rolled up ball onto the baking sheet next to me.  "Because I've lost control of my life."  That's not a bad way to start, I guess.

Bakugou groans again - I can already see his head thrown back exasperatedly even with my back to him - and he approaches my workstation.  His annoyed gaze darts between the bowl of cookie dough, the parchment paper lined kitchen scale, and the baking sheet.  He studies me, crimson eyes narrowed in light disappointment.  I don't even laugh nervously as I usually would.  He sighs and turns to wash his hands.  I continue portioning the dough out carefully,  Bakugou taking his place next to me and helping me.

We work in silence.  I know he's less than enthused about being woken up in the middle of his beauty sleep to do something like baking, but I'm pleased that he doesn't ask questions (yet).

Once the cookies are in the oven baking, we set the timer and Bakugou slides them in the oven before turning to me arms crossed.  "So, you wanna tell me what's going on?"

Standing across from him, I needed to hold onto the cool countertop for support.  I've been wondering how to tell him for a while.  This argument I had with someone else had nothing to do with him, but he's the closest person to me.  He deserves to know at least what's going on, I just didn't know how much I should tell him.  There was a chance he'd think differently of me, knowing I have some ugly thoughts.

"Come on."  His tone softens.  "For the past few weeks, you've been more quiet, less talkative, you're spacing out more, you're doing some weird new things," he motions to the dirty dishes on the counter, "And Sundays are your designated going-out days but you've been skipping them.  What's going on?"

I look down at the floor.  "I've... just had a lot on my mind lately."  It's not a complete lie.

"Obviously, it's something you're not telling me.  I know you're not being totally honest.  Spit it out."

The line about being honest triggers a wave of memories, sending a wave of melancholy chaos so brutal I slide down to the cold floor to stabilize myself, curling up into a ball.  A fresh wave of sobs threatens to come out as I cover my mouth.

"W-Oh sh- Babe, I didn't mean to-"

"No, it's fine," I manage out shakily, my voice already higher and cracking.  "I needed to tell you sometime and I've been neglecting you, I'm sorry."  I motion for him to sit next to me, swallowing the rock in my throat.

I tell him everything.  Every detail of my slow burn argument that lasted almost a whole week, starting from inciting events weeks ago to the climactic end last week.  All my regrets, my mistakes, my anger, my insults, my self-doubt, my regrets, all the unspoken words I've kept to myself.  Everything rushed out of me to the point where I was sobbing and shaking, Bakugou cradling me in his arms.  I thought I would've been able to handle it, pushing it down for me to handle and process later, but later never came because I was trying to delay facing them.  My fear of showing him the innermost darkest and broken parts of me that I thought would push him away.  I realize I'm more of a mess than I thought I was; I let it build up by myself until I became a sobbing mess on the kitchen floor.

Katsuki stays silent, running his warm hands up and down my back and listening to everything I had to say, even if they weren't exactly coherent from the sobs.  

"I knew something was wrong when you suddenly stopped going out and never told me anything."  He pauses thoughtfully.  "It must be hard to deal with mean thoughts since you're the nicest person I've met, but having them every once in a while doesn't suddenly make you a villain or something.  They just come from feeling something, it's just human nature."  He pulls back to look at me and wipe the tear trails off my face. "I still love you. I'm here for you, I won't leave just because you want to insult someone who hurt you. I think it's pretty hot, actually." 

I manage a giggle, another tear falling.  "Of course you would think that."

He wipes it away with the pad of his finger and smiles at me.  "You're my superhero.  I'm sorry you're feeling this way.  I'll do anything I can to help you through this, if you'll let me.  I know how hard it was to tell me."

I huddle against his chest, sitting between his legs to catch as much warmth as I can by hugging his arm over me.  "You know, I didn't want to think about my feelings for so long.  I wanted to ignore them as much as I could because I thought they were bad.  I thought ignoring them meant being able to move on.  I ran away from them until I was baking cookies at 4 am just to distract myself.  I just... want to face them and be done with them."

"So burn 'em."

I stop tracing the back of his hand.  "What?"

"Burn them.  Y'know, like how spies burn important documents that they don't want other people finding."

I stare at him blankly.  "What are you trying to say?"

Katsuki sighs.  "You're the kind of person who needs to get things off your chest  or it'll eat you alive.  I know you still have a lot to say that you can't tell me, so just write what you feel.  No sugarcoating.  Exactly how you want to say them.  And then, once it's out of your system," he snaps his fingers and creates a mini explosion for effect, "Burn it. No one else has to know."

The idea sounds perfect.  I can be completely honest to myself, no matter how childish or insulting I will probably sound.  And maybe some of my anger will be quelled by some form of destruction, I guess.

"You're doing the burning though, since you're so used to it."

A week later, Katsuki and I stood outside in our concrete backyard in the dark night.  There was no wind to bother the fire or make a sound.  I huddle close to him, looking at the inked looseleaf in my hand.

The night I wrote these words, I was angry and vulnerable.  Hesitant to start at first, I could stop myself after the first sentence.  My thoughts barely echoed in my mind as they were reproduced on paper.  The experience was in a limbo between autopilot robotic reproduction and furious out-of-body possession.  The only thing I vaguely remember is how rhythmic the words flowed out of me and the red-tinted vision of me screaming them out into an abyss without consequence.  I couldn't even recall anything I'd written, despite the same insults dangling behind my tongue for days.  I felt lighter, freed, but afraid of what I might've said.  I tucked the paper away without reading it for days.

It wasn't until a few hours earlier that I decided to revisit them.  The person's voice was furious, almost like they were never allowed to speak before, but now they had free reign.  This person was a prisoner standing on their field to be executed and desperate to have their last words heard before they croaked.  Honestly, I would've been repulsed, only pitying them for their terrible decisions and upbringing that led them here.  But these were mine.  I'm the villain who had to take accountability.

I wish I could say I didn't mean them, but I wrote them, my intent is obvious.  At least I can say I'm not proud of them.  I said what I needed to say, now no one needs to see them.  I'm going to let that side of me go.

Katsuki takes the paper from my hand.  "Not gonna lie, this would be the first time I've intentionally set fire to something."

I raise an eyebrow.  "You're telling me you've never tried to set fire to something before?"

He opens his mouth to object, but then closes it.  "Okay, stupid drunk things don't count, I was under the influence."  He takes a breath.  "You ready?"

I nod, bracing myself.

The bottom of the paper erupts into a single brilliant flame, sending my heart into a frenzy at my instant danger reflex.  My body tenses being this close to fire, but I relax as I focus on the bigger, beautiful picture.  A weak halo surrounding us and illuminating the pavement, the spotless paper being consumed quickly, the flames ascending up and leaving charr in its place, the gradient of a blue base bleeding into blinding yellow and white outlined by an orange border.  I watch as my messily scrawled words disappear like a dark curtain sweeping across it, rendering it useless as only the smell of smoke and ash take its place.

I embrace his free arm.  Words wouldn't be enough to describe how grateful I am for him standing by me this entire time, supporting me, being available for me to open up to him, being my safe space, witnessing this with me.

The timeless moment bitterly ends as the last of the paper chars to black, the flame fizzling out into blue until only dark grey smoke remains in the darkness.  I follow the trail up into the night sky as if hoping to catch a glimpse of my words flying away.

"You okay babe?"  Katsuki whispers, not wanting to disturb the stillness.

I let my body relax.  My chest feels strangely lighter but filled with a newfound relief.  Is this what spiritual cleansing feels like?  The darkness around me is almost dreamlike.  "Yeah," I breathe, allowing myself a moment to come back down.  "I feel much better."

"And now you understand the joy of setting things on fire."  I can hear his smirk.

The punch I want to land on his face turns into a light tap on his arm as I snuggle closer to him.  "Thank you for this."

Katsuki plants a kiss on top of my forehead and his arm engulfs around me.  "It's the least I can do to help."

As we finally drag ourselves inside, I imagine the paper that's just burned in front of me, the inked words on it already forgotten.  I'm satisfied with letting them go, knowing they can't hurt anyone else and I wasn't attached to them enough to be sad.

Whatever I wrote will be a secret even I don't know and what I set free.

Alright so this is Molly Mallard, Scrooge's grandmother and Fergus's mother.

She's appeared only in the Duck family tree and a few cameos in DT17. Now something that's noticeable was how she always appeared like she had been crying and scuffed. Like she always looks just so sad with the exception of in DT17

why did they have to ruin scrooge’s character?

I wouldn't necessarily say ruined, just.....different. He isn't as miserly as the comics, or as straight up stingy as DT87. Sure he's a great character but I think DT17 tries too much to make him the hero that he never has been.

The entire point of Scrooge was supposed to be 'Donald's rich and grumpy uncle' who occasionally is shown to do nice things for the people he cares about. I think DT17 focused so much on the aspect of him doing stuff for his family, that they forgot thag Scrooge can sometimes really be rotten although not to his core.

But also this kinda messes up some of his character dynamics. Scrooge and Glomgold were supposed to be shown as equals, the only thing separating them was Scrooge had slightly more/better morals than Glomgold. For Goldie, when they first met, she was supposed to be the one being terrible to Scrooge (which she is). But the difference is after the fact, Scrooge became miserly while Goldie raised orphans or in the case of DT87, became a lumberjill as well.

And then one other dynamic that comes to mind is how Scrooge and Magica are treated. Since the 1950s it was always more of a trickster manipulation dynamic. With Magica loving to be overdramatic for fun. Dt17 I feel tries to just make them dramatic and intense?

Either way, DT17 just tries to make Scrooge more heroic with a good conscious rather than heroic while still obviously struggling with morals in the grey area.

And the time that they do touch on the bad things he's done, he faces no consequences, but that's for another rant lol

HEY! Rosa answered and debunked a lot of Life and Times things

Deadass talked to him for like 4 hours lmao but I got most of my questions answered! This is gonna be only the fact part of my talks with Rosa, I'll post the more personal interactions in another post.

Ok so number 1 is MOLLY WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A CHILD LMAOOOO. She was still very young (early 20s) and died fairly young as well, but Rosa said he just wanted to portray an overworked miner and mother. AND I THINK HE SAW MY POST FROM JUNE LMAO. He said 'A few months ago I saw someone post how Molly looks like a child and why does she look like a child! But no no no that's not what I intended at all! I don't know why other prints of the family tree make her look like a child! This is the most accurate one.' (he points to the one where Molly is older looking and has Ludwig in it was well.)

Number 2 is what happened to Hortense and Della? Apparently Della was always missing to him. He didn't clarify how exactly she was missing, but she just went missing. Hortense on the other hand, he had more details. Originally in his mind, Hortense was alive and well! She was hiding and only Matilda knew. Rosa was originally going to do a sequel to 'The Castle's Secret' where Matilda reveals that they should go reunite with Hortense.

Rosa got as far as creating a general script and some doodles but then Disney and his editors came up to him and said that he wasn't allowed to include any of the Sensational Six's parents. So treat her as if she died. So that's just what Rosa did, so yes Hortense is dead in the Life and Times.

Number 3: Would Scrooge have settled down and make Dawson his home base instead of Duckburg? Rosa actually laughed at this one cause he had never thought of it before. His first answer was that he wasn't really sure! But regarding a family and stuff, he wasn't sure either so he just said 'maybe? Who knows what would have happened.' AND BOY IS MAYBE GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME LMAO

But he did go into the whole Scrooge faking his death to go and marry Goldie, move back into the cabin, and live the rest of his days with her. Which actually he was going to get that published as well! But Disney immediately said a cold hard 'no'

Not really a number but, ROSA DOESN'T HATE DUCKTALES!!! This is the one that surprised me a bit! He laughed and asked why does everybody think he hates Ducktales! He said DT87 was one of the best shows of the 80s and DT17 is just...interesting and a bit weird to him.

The difference is he doesn't like how the shows were executed. He said the shows really dumbed down the lessons of the comics. But for little kids, yeah it's a good show. He thinks DT doesn't do a very good at portraying everything the comics were able to convey. He doesn't like watching the show, and hasn't watched it all the way through, but he doesn't hate DT.

Also he actually gets excited when people tell him that they discovered his books through Ducktales! Because they're still managing to find and actually taking the time to read the Carl Barks comics and the Don Rosa comics.

Goldie's eye color. Now this one was interesting to me. I brought up how Goldie's eyes constantly change between blue and green. Apparently Rosa intended for her to always have blue! 'She's supposed to be this beautiful woman, so I had to give her those shining blue eyes. But Carl Barks gave her green eyes so it's always changed. I don't control the colonization of the comics.'

What happened to the chilis? So many Don Rosa fans will know that at conventions, Rosa usually brings a basket of chilis for people to eat. But the last few times he hasn't brought them. Apparently it's because in Europe he found out he could get in huge legal trouble for it, and in the US, people would touch the chilis and not eat them. So Rosa just didn't wanna deal with the hassle of that anymore.

I'm sure we talked about more regarding TLAT but I don't remember at the moment, I'll add on if I remember again 😅

I have been thinking about the ways we present knowledge in posts on Tolkien Tumblr

[I’m editing to add that I have been thinking about this more on and off ALL afternoon, and... I recognize social media is a complex space and that there are plenty of valid personal reasons we don’t use citations in social media. So take this all with a grain of salt, obviously. And I think there’s pros and cons to it all, but this is still a semi-worthwhile conversation, I think.]

Could we as a Tolkien fandom stop making posts with an aggressively informative tone--often without sources--that mix canon/textual information, meta, and headcanon? What would it look like were we to at least use syntactical indicators of when we are talking about (a) what exists in the text, (b) what can be pieced together or is implied in the text (or can be reasonably assumed given in-universe history), and (c) what we have chosen to believe as individuals?

While I tend to take a "live and let live" attitude to fandom, when we present things as fact that are not necessarily facts, we are doing a disservice to one another as fans.

Every fan deserves access to information to make their own decisions, and it therefore makes sense to me that meta and headcanons should be marked more clearly than they often are, particularly in wildly popular posts that may be getting circulated due to, well--potentially--confirmation bias.

For example, there are always posts flying around with what might be construed as misinformation. Particularly when it comes to supposedly canonical takes on things as sensitive as elvish cultural differences, racial hierarchy, or colonialist commentaries, take-down culture--even within a complex fictional world--somehow seems to fuel these bizarre and often--in fandom--self-propagating wars that extend from the page to the fan space and fuel either in-universe wars (between Noldor and Sindarin and Silvan stans, for example) and extra-universe discomforts (i.e., those who have experiences or histories of racial-ethnic trauma and colonialization and are seeing these narratives ignored, uncited, or poorly represented, passed around the fandom as freely and unchecked as Dorwinion at the King's table). Even when these posts elevate the group that is coded as inferior in-universe, doing so with no context, no citations, or no indication of whether the post is "real" Tolkien or headcanon potentially obfuscates:

the very real reasons fans feel affirmed or disaffirmed by the texts, and

the complex and nuanced reasons fans spend hundreds of hours creating content or writing stories that write against an in-universe narrative.

And it makes appreciation of Tolkien's world more difficult for those who are just discovering it.

To be absolutely clear: I love meta.* I live for meta. And I think my absolute obsessive love for it is why this frustrates me. And as someone who has been in and out of the Tolkien world for 22 years--who came of fandom age in the early years of the Internet--I just really think we should be helping younger generations learn and make their own decisions--while enjoying meta, too!--but not aggressively telling them how to think. Some of us have been in this fandom so long and have read so much text we can look at a post and go "Oh, this is canon; this is questionably canon across drafts; this is reasonable meta and how cool!; and this is this person's individual opinions" but not all of us are there, and none of us are there on EVERY aspect of Tolkien.

So yes, have your opinions--I, for example, have some very unpopular opinions about the Feanorians, and Amroth, and I am an unapologetically enthusiastic Wood-elf stan (see my pinned post, lmao)--but all I recommend is that you be clear in your presentation, even just in the tags.

My point isn't to stop people from talking about Tolkien; it's not about policing who can say what; it's not even about holding one type of knowledge over others. It's all just to say:

- Yes, tumblr is all fun and games, but media consumption and media literacy still matter, and so do respect and kindness. - Please responsibly write and reblog. -What might our fandom(s) look like if we changed the ways we talk about knowledge and its dissemination?

All I want is vague citations and clarity or at least an indication of the type of post being propagated, and I don't think that's such a bad thing to whinge about.

Don't buy Harvest Moon games people and also do your damn research

Video games journalist that has done 0 research: (describes the plot of every single farming game that isn't Farming Simulator 6000 or whatever) Oh hey that sounds familiar *wink* like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon right? Me: Yeah, gee, I wonder why that is, I sure do wonder, and I sure do hope this journalist isn't implying that Story of Seasons is ripping those titles off because if they had bothered to do LITERALLY ANY RESEARCH- YES they all start out with a city dweller inheriting their Grandfather's farm, that's how it's been from the OG Bokujou Monogatari on the SNES, because any time Marvelous tried anything different the fans complained or the game didn't sell well. YES they all have romanceable NPCs and marriage because the one or two times they DIDN'T the fans complained and the game didn't sell well. YES of COURSE they all have crops and animals and cooking, why wouldn't they?! What is the point in going "oh wow these games sure are all the same hurr durr" that's the POINT you TROGDOLYTE JOURNALIST. Would you wink wink nudge nudge if another Halo game came out and WHAT A SURPRISE IT HAS SHOOTING IN IT? Would you be surprised if another expansion of Minecraft had SQUARE THINGS in it?! Would you go "oh hey look more adorable monsters to catch" if the next Pokemon game had MORE POKEMON IN IT?! Hi, my name is Arti and apparently I get very angry about small, insignificant things like this. I like the fact that you can play as a boy or a girl

New professor is hot

200+ Pokemon is a pretty good number, even if it’s less than ¼ of the total number of Pokemon in the franchise… maybe they’ll add more as updates or expansions?

The scenery in this game looks amazing, and the thing I like most about it is that they didn’t go for a real-world hyper realistic look, but very much a Pokemon world hyper realistic look (if that makes any sense at all)

If they put out this trailer now, what in the world are they going to be showing off on Pokemon Day in February?!

Also, Meganium is much bigger than I thought

I love the 2020 Graffarts P4 merch, but the weird smirk on Yosuke's face in this one always kind of bugged me. I know it's just supposed to be him smiling a big smile because he's hugging his bro, but the grin is crooked in a way that makes him look kind of psychotic, so I decided I wanted to tweak it just a little. And I added extra blushes because of course I did. Anyway, disclaimer that this is obviously not my art, all I did was spend like 5 minutes in photoshop on it lol. Feel free to use with or without credit.
