another thing i love about dungeon meshi along with how theres adequate time given to every character that matters! Is that like. Along with no "every single character in supporting cast gets put on the backburner in favor of MC / other character development" is that theres also no "god these characters are all so boring except that one guy who is tragic and compelling" bc they all have the same capacity for compelling tragedy (and such).

And it also doesn't feel like when ppl tack on as much Bad Things onto a characters life just to emphasize tragedy or hardship... Theres a good balance in each of em. The recent leaked izutsumi dark lore implication drop wasn't even in the main story and it doesnt feel like that quirky "i love torturing my ocs! 🤪🤪🤪🤪 (Literally just throwing everything into one pot)" sentiment i see here often if that makes sense. It doesn't feel Edgy ykwim

#i cld never do this. fully balancing individual characters alone is hard enough #but padding out individual characters with hardships that can sometimes parallel each other #or make you have to Think about it further in a show not tell way #WITHOUT also making you roll your eyes because of how edgy it is but instead giving enough for adequate enjoyment #regardless of which character u fixate on. is really good #that was my point ykwim. im here fixated on thistles tragedy because well. but its not bc he's my only option #i guess thats also the wonder of it like I can really only write from what I know (or experience thru others experiences)#so having a variety of characters #that draw in intrigue from different people in the same cast is so #i hope that makes sense?#OH WAIT MY TAGS CUT OFF #its so amazing like theres smthng there for everyone #talkys

#Finn's ocs #Finn's art #oc references #i wrote the descs while w the kids so hopefully they make sense. my attention was split #but anyway here in the tags I'll talk about the designs in relation to their kids lol #polaris is emulating thuban moreso than anyone else. her color scheme and outfit motifs are the same as his- they ARE his #her original outfit is clothes she took and diy'd into her own so she could go off into the world and well presumably look for him at first #the truth is she always wanted to see the world that's why she loved maps. in a way this was an excuse. in another way she was just lonely #but doesn't understand loneliness. also the fact that she's not his daughter by blood is part of that #bc of her actual parents (not as relevant character-wise) she sees all relationships as temporary and she has issues connecting #ananke i wanted to mostly look intimidating in a way that Bella really isn't #Bella puts on skull hairties and fishnets and stuff but she's very much. a cute softie trying to look edgy. she has pink twintails #she's so different from her mom in pretty much every way but she still did have that ideal of strength drilled into her #still her take on it is softer. she's the team leader now but she's really pretty lenient aside from the important No Killing rule ofc #w Rhea and Arche i had a bit of a flower theme. pussywillow (lol) means motherhood and buttercups mean childishness #so. mother and child #but rhea is interesting bc she's raising a whole different kid now that she's in a different place in life #if you do the math she had Saiph young. and it was alright for a while until his dad (again not as important) died #so she didn't have support or money. but she had a connection to the guild because his dad's old sword teacher is a member (hmm)#but she was too scared/ashamed to visit. she just left him his dad's old knife because that's all she had (THE KNIFE IS IMPORTANT)#arche is her kid with her second husband and her new beginning. this will cause some inner problems for Saiph when he meets them...#Poerava was kinda designed to have rich lady vibes because remember Al's family is practically nobility #but more importantly she's designed to look like a mom. with the low ponytail and tired eyes #the black pearl of her namesake as the centerpiece of her outfit too #again she's got the healthiest relationship with her kid here by a longshot #but i mean don't worry Al still got the daddy issues so he's not getting away unscathed #I already drew Taurus with the zodiac knights though so i didn't feel the need to reintroduce him #anyway Mira really has 0 connection to any family at all she was found as an orphaned baby after a monster attack #obviously she had parents but beyond town of origin it's unknown who so she has no connections to any sort of past parental figure #the guild is her one and only family and that's how she wants it. she wants to be with them forever the past doesn't matter

You know perilous trails was a good quest when it singlehandedly improved Xiao’s fanon characterization by at least 50%. It seemed like more people began to realize that Xiao is far less of an edgy tsundere who’s snappy to everyone because he has #issues and far more like this tormented stray cat who stares at you from the secluded corner he won’t leave in the most poorly socialized and tense way imaginable when you try to coax him into approaching you because he is clearly starving and all alone in the rain and cold. He bristles defensively and bats at you if you get too close but every time you walk away and then look back you see he’s discreetly following you and is now staring at you intently from the bushes

If there is at least one thing I can credit FE for doing better than Tales in localization, it's not trying to actively go out of their way for an entire game to avoid subtext or direct text between two men that is romantic or implied romantic. Funny when it's so present that the attempt doesn't even work; infuriating that it was attempted to begin with.

So as much as I often have issues with some of FE's localizations, at least they have a leg up on loc Tales for that.

#DCB Comments #imagine changing entire sentences and vocal tones just to try to avoid it #if anything I'd say at least in FE the locs just... keep what's there like #they could've toned Soren and Houses Yuri down and they didn't. they just kept their lines or in some cases #especially with Houses Yuri I'd say leaned into them #have to specify bc Houses Yuri got to keep his bi agenda. Vesperia Yuri had the unfortunate issue of #the loc not wanting to keep his gay and trying reeeeally hard to avoid it #including altering entire sentences to avoid any woe is them misunderstandings about men having feelings for each other #meanwhile Houses Yuri is free to call men cute and lo and behold everyone loved that for him #they removed and altered a LOT of Vesperia Yuri's personality traits #(including any ability to express real sadness or fear bc woe is them if he's not a cool edgy man)#but they also really changed his tone toward Flynn PLUS some of what they say to each other #and twisted it to make it sound like Yuri was either angry or wasn't actually emotional abt him #forget the way they brought Grant George in for the DE release and made him sound just completely DEAD with zero personality #like. I can tolerate playing Houses dubbed despite my gripes with it (story based stuff)#it didn't feel like they were trying to alter LBGT+ aspects and they even for some rly leaned into it #basically if you haven't played Vesperia Yuri is... really gay coded. the loc pretended not to notice #in fact he's queer + gay coded bc and doesn't fit male gender norms and the gacha games LOVE that with his hair/outfits #Rays mind you is JP only bc it was shut down very quickly in the west and Vesp Yuri's story in Rays is uh #basically it centers around Flynn he loses his shit to protect Flynn and they do the usual like #don't-admit-it's-gay-outright in fictional media by using the ''Yuri's important person'' shtick #but he activates a special power in the middle of utterly raging to get Flynn back from their enemies #funny thing? that game never made it to that arc. I was told in about five months the western ver would've gotten that #but in some way I'm glad it didn't bc who knows how they would've tried to spin that #It's BAFFLING to me how you can get characters in Tales like JAY but the locs shake in their boots at the idea of queer gays #but given how allergic fictional media is to admitting a male character is gay -gestures to Ike and Vesp Yuri-#I'm not surprised I'm just actually angry that the locs try to censor homosexual relationships as much as possible even when they barely ca #if anyone does know Vesp Yuri and is confused on why I'm calling him gay coded despite what the dub did with Judith feel free to ask #bc I do ship them a little bit myself! but I just recognize that canon wise I really can't see him as anything but gay-demiromantic #but again at least FE locs don't shake in their boots anymore abt same sex pairs including men (side eyes Lucius/Raven)

read camp dama.scus. enjoyed some stuff, really wish i didn't have the experience so often reading a book that's Good and Progressive and about Queer Affirmation etc of feeling like i'm side-eying the author like 'and you know that delineating the people that oppose you as pure evil that therefore deserves torture or death or being eliminated from society entirely is bad, right? you know that, right??'

#it's kind of funny bc the main character is a jack chick tract atheist in a way bc #she rejects her religion (REALLY quickly and easily lol) and immediately starts... conceiving of HERSELF as a prophet/god #as in. starts making up 'bible' verses that are about Her and how awesome she is #and how she's going to bring down her enemies with the righteous flaming sword of vengeance and wrath and truth etc #which i would love as a character Thing if the narrative didn't just treat this as 'super metal' with absolutely no further examination #(seriously she casually drops that she's been making up bible-style verses abt herself and her ideas #in convo with her Token Good Christian friend. by CITING ONE OF THEM #LIKE IT'S A BIBLE VERSE. and then going 'o yeah i've been making those up'#and her friend's reaction is just 'haha that's sick' and moving on)#listen i'm all for god complexes and edgy bullshit but the presentation along w the general #descriptions of the Enemy as 'cartoonishly pure evil' and implicit 'haha nice!' around the idea of THEM getting tortured forever #just leaves me ://///#i might be oversensitive to this after stuff like Sorrowland and Pet but.... just. ech. i wish i didn't have to play the game of #'do you think torture is ok if it's someone you don't like?' and 'do you consider people who do bad things as human?' in the first place #also it was just a HUGELY underwritten book lol it'd make a decent movie but viewed as a book it gets funnier the longer i think about it #was marketed as conversion camp horror. 0 conversion camp content bc IT ALREADY HAPPENED #0 relationship development bc the two people the MC connects with she ALREADY HAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH. i had a very strange dream last night where i was looking through my facebook memories and a year ago today i had apparently posted a long, intended-as-a-joke post about how it's a shame we don't hang people from the gallows in the public square anymore. i was like wow oh god i don't remember writing this at all. this seems unlike myself; i think this is so unfunny and hurtful. how will this change how people see me? well it's a good thing i never posted that after all then.

i dont hate alain over the kalos league bc tbh i dont really care all that much about it since in hindsight ash has now won the literal world championship, and i think the unova league loss was easily far worse in themes, narrative, and tone while ash vs alain is at least a good spectacle even if (from what i remember and what ive seen thus far) the setup is messy as hell, and its not as funny as tobias so i dont really think about it

but man these episodes really have not endeared me to him

#its not that hes like an AWFUL character i dont think thats true #i just think hes nothing #hes a really boring character that does admittedly have a good premise for a character in both narrative and the side goal of advertisement #but i dont really feel much tension bc i dont buy his bond w any character besides lysandre #why does he have beef with sycamore?? is that even explained or is he just an edgy guy #hes also not really all that endearing w mairin when all he does is snap abt how annoying she is and also that time he abandoned her in anot #another region. which tbh the specials were so boring i only just registered today that he left mairin in hoenn alone #w no way to get back to her home region. steven had to fly her there #i dont buy him being like ‘’oh i must protect her smile’’ when theyve barely had any genuine moments #hes just kinda designed to be cool edgy eyecandy without much substance #and it sucks bc i really wanted the specials to endear me to him #but no. he really is just that boring and contrived #ill have to wait til the team flare arc again bc i know these aspects shine their best in that arc #but man before that he aint doing it for me at all #echoed voice #pokeani lb

i am like not happy that im stupid or at least seen as stupid in an extremely immediately obvious way (instead of in a fun and secret way) HOWEVER what i lack in intellect i make up for in being strong of spirit

#sitting on the floor drinking and sniffling in a strong of spirit type way #being seen + treated as stupid is so overwhelmingly frustrating to me like i let it get to me a lot #it was extremely weird when i finally moved out and eventually came to terms with the way i was treated as kid #being mostly just my mom/parents lashing out at me and i was for the most part perfectly competant #but even years later i have no confidence in my intellect/reasoning capabilities/ability to communicate #and i Know when someone is intentionally trying to fuck with me or lying to me or others (very literally with my job)#but even then theres this huge sensitive gap of doubt in my head that no matter what ill always question myself #and my own perception of things like im constantly questioning whether or not im even capable of things ive been doing for years #like even when i know im right and im proven right i still have to power through the same shame and embarrassment as if i was disastrously #wrong.#i think it's also worse lately than it's been in a while because it's been going on for months now and im at the end of my rope mentally #im constantly being challenged and getting more sensitive and edgy and it's bleeding into everything #including like struggling to have conversations friends ive known for years bc i feel like i dont know how im being perceived anymore #even if nothing has really changed ex #it's literally only two people who i dont even like but it's so prolonged it's having an impact on my basic confidence
