Notebook November (Notevember) 📓
Looking for a new challenge, in light of the dumpster fire that was once the NaNo organization? Not a huge fan of the 50k goal because of time, motivation, lack of a solid enough concept, or generally don't vibe with it? Do you desire or hoard new stationery the way a dragon desires and hoards sparkly rocks? Notevember just might be up your alley!
What is Notevember?
Some bullshit I made up like a month ago & I absolutely doubt I'm the only one with such a concept, either 😂 A variant of the NaNoWriMo challenge; for those who find specific word goals daunting, who prefer to work longhand, and/or who get more satisfaction seeing... tangible results, as it were? Like, you can absolutely do this digitally if you really want, but this is very much aimed towards folks who find writing longhand just hits a little differently.
Rather than aim for a given number of words, you're aiming to fill up a notebook!
Supplies?
You will need:
- An empty notebook. My personal preference is a 70-100 page spiral or classic composition notebook, but use one that's however large or small you want! This is also an excuse to finally crack open any empty notebooks you might have lying around, yeah?
- Writing implements of choice
And... that's it! Throw in stickers or whatever else you might want, but all you'll really need is a bundle of paper & something to mark it up with.
How to play?
Start filling the pages.
It can be a single story! It could be character or general writing exercises. It could be research notes, timelines, observations of people around you, overheard conversations, a collection of passages, quotes, poetry, or lyrics that speak to you. It could be a little of everything!
The only goal is that, by the end of November, you've filled up each page - and it's your call, if that only means the front of a page, or front and back.
Notevember is meant to be flexible & relatively forgiving, especially if you tend to have a lot going on. The notebook could be one small enough to keep with you throughout the day so you can jot down lines on a lunch break, in a waiting room, on the bus - or it could be something you do at home, after waking up or just before bed or whenever you've got the time.
Other Thoughts?
I have found that I get more satisfaction and more motivation to continue when I can like... see a result. Number Going Up just doesn't quite work for me like it does for other folks, but seeing empty pages fill up, seeing the distortion and wear of the notebook as it gets used? That gets me to feel, 'Ah! Something Is Happening!' There's also (a little) less tendency to try and edit as I go; working longhand with a pen does better for me to get that zero draft/concept on the page, rather than agonizing over creating a polished product from the start.
I've also found I get more into that... 'no one will ever have to see this, it can be as messy & misspelled & senseless as it needs to be' mindset easier, than writing on a tablet or laptop? -shrug- idk It Just Hits Different and that's all there is to it.
Share snippets, characters, whatever you're doing, if you want! But this is a little more aimed at those who just need to get things down, who want to have An End Product, but maybe don't have fully coherent plots or polished pieces, and don't usually have much to share - it's just between you and your notebook. You don't have to share or invite anyone else in, if you don't want to.
So! That's about the long and short of it. If you think you like this idea, feel free to join in; and whatever you are or aren't doing for November Writing Time - good luck, and take care!

So a few months ago I decided to invest my stimmy in some proper composer studio equipment, most notably a keyboard decked out with a bunch of sounds I can use to make music on my computer, you know, the way people do nowadays. I thought it might motivate me to get back into composing on a regular basis.
So yeah that was a few months ago. Funny enough, buying shiny new tools to be creative with doesn't, in and of itself, make creativity happen.
So I started thinking I might do like a music NaNoWriMo, but not like one big work, maybe a bunch of smaller pieces. So actually more like Inktober, but music, and in November.
Like... NOTEvember.
(I did come up with that pun, but a quick google has shown me I wasn't the first, but that's okay I don't need to be original.)
So I'm gonna try it. Just one little musical thing every day in November, even just a few seconds of an idea. I may post some of the results on here. We'll see how it goes.

No one
"When I'm on missions, I'm no one. There's nothing in my head, just parameters and tactics and the metronome. And I was okay with that, but-" Alexandra swallowed. "But what am I outside of missions, either? I'm just empty, all the time. Just a doll that gets up and obeys orders and goes back to the shelf."
A person would cry now, wouldn't she?
Mal shook her head. "That's not true and you know it."
"What am I, then?" Her gaze, which had become more and more unfocused, snapped to meet Mal's, challenging.
Mal faltered, trying and failing to think of words that seemed like they would help.
"You're family," she managed eventually, reaching over to pull Alexandra into a hug. "You're my sister, okay?"
“...Okay.”

I’m doing a thing I call Notevember (which is basically Inktober but with November and writing). Not all of my writing is gonna be Danger Days related but some of it will be, so this is a heads-up that I’ll be posting that some of it here.

Note-vember #1:
An Epilogue, or Perhaps a Prologue, to The Next Doctor
Read on AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16490321
“Congratulations, Doctor,” Jenny Flint said.
The Doctor looked up at her from where he was braced against the door. “On what?”
“On actually wearing Victorian clothes for once!”
“Oh.” The Doctor looked down at himself. “Oh, they’re not authentic. I think they were part of a Halloween costume. Some of them were, anyway. Besides, I didn’t exactly plan on coming here.”
“You never intend to visit us, do you?” Vastra said from across the room. There was a shrill sound as she ran her cutlass against the sharpener. “You always drop in unintentionally. Usually with something unpleasant in tow. A dinosaur, for example –“
“Shush!” the Doctor said. “I know you’ve met half a dozen of my incarnations, but could you try and keep them in order in your mind, for my sake? I don’t particularly want any spoilers.” He paused for a second. “Unless you can tell me if I’m ever ginger?”
“You ain’t,” Jenny said. “Now shift over.” She pushed a mahogany cabinet in front of the door, doing her best to ignore the incessant thuds coming from the other side of it. The Doctor obediently got out of the way.
“That won’t hold it for long.”
“And what would you suggest?” Vastra said.
“Well, you could start with a decent lock,” the Doctor said. He ran his fingertips against the pale oak of the door and then licked them. “Or a decent door.”
“That door is state of the art!” Jenny said.
“Oh, can we not argue about the door?” Vastra said. “If we must argue about anything it should be about where Strax has got to.”
“You told him to collect up all his weapons,” Jenny said. “He’ll be gone for hours.”
“Strax!” Vastra called.
“Oh yes, he’ll be so much help,” the Doctor said. “I doubt even Sontaran guns will be of use against a Cyberman.”
“Where did it even come from?” Jenny said, crossing the room to get the other cutlass from where it hung, proud and gleaming, from the wall. “I thought – well, I know you said you didn’t want us to tell you your future, but –“
“And I still don’t,” the Doctor said. “Let’s just leave it at ‘there was a Cyberman invasion and I stopped it’. Will stop it. Will have already – never mind, but one of them must have escaped.”
“And Strax lead it straight here,” Jenny finished, glaring in the general direction of the upstairs.
The Doctor shrugged, then jumped as there was a much louder thud behind him. He turned around, and saw that the Cyberman had punched its hand straight through the door.
“I don’t think we have time to talk about Strax’s uncanny ability for getting on people’s bad side,” he said.
“Agreed,” Vastra said, throwing the sharpener down onto the end-table. “Move the cabinet, Doctor.”
“What, was it expensive?”
“Greatly,” Vastra said. “I wish to face our attacker.” She held up her sword in a fighting stance, and Jenny mirrored her.
The Doctor stared at them, then at his own hands, which were unfortunately devoid of weapons. “Suit yourself.” He crouched down and pushed the cabinet out of the way of the door.
Vastra glanced at Jenny. “Are you ready, dear?”
“Never more so,” Jenny said with a grin.
The Doctor shrugged again, lunged forwards to push the lock open, and stepped out of the way just as the Cyberman crashed through the doorframe.

Notevember 5 - Ceremony
“Kakashi, don’t you think it’s about time you made an honest man of Iruka?” Sakura’s voice carried into the kitchen over the sound of sizzling.
Iruka’s eyebrows rose at that, but he didn’t say anything and continued to stir the rice and veggies in the wok. He picked up a pepper and popped it in his mouth, fanning himself when it burnt his tongue. Almost ready.
“Yeah, when are you guys gonna get married?” Naruto added, making it clear that he still had not mastered the skill of having an indoor voice. “Sakura and I are already married, and you guys are old!”
“We’re not that old,” Kakashi answered smoothly.
“You are so!”
Iruka turned and stepped into the dining room where his guests were seated and sipping tea, leaning against the doorway and crossing his arms. “He’s right, Kakashi. Your hair has been looking a little silver recently.”
Kakashi turned to look at him, eyes wide. “Silver?”
Iruka nodded. “Silver.”
Kakashi looked away, troubled.
“See? That’s what I mean! You guys have to tie the knot before it’s too late!” Naruto slammed his hand on the table decisively, earning a sharp word from Sakura.
Iruka looked at Kakashi, and Kakashi looked back in a knowing way that Iruka suspected he was mirroring. They had discussed marriage, of course. They had talked about it at length, the flowers, the venue, the vows, the food, the family and friends, the whole affair. They had discussed it. Of course they had.
Iruka turned his attention to Naruto and smiled at him softly. “Naruto, it’s okay. Kakashi and I are already married.”
Naruto and Sakura’s faces went slack with shock. Then Naruto’s expression went from bewilderment to confusion to hurt. “You guys got married… and you didn’t invite me to the wedding?”
Iruka felt a small bit of panic rise in his chest at that, and he hurried to correct his poor choice of words. “No, no, Naruto, it’s okay! We didn’t get married, we wouldn’t have a wedding without inviting you!”
“Oh.” Naruto relaxed, relieved. “Okay.”
Sakura looked between the two older men. “Then what do you mean?”
“He means,” Kakashi answered, “that we basically are married. We live together, eat together…”
“Pay the bills together, go grocery shopping together…” Iruka put in.
“We have each other’s names on our emergency contact forms.”
“Yep. We’re basically everything a married couple is.”
Kakashi swirled the tea in his cup around thoughtfully. “By this point, a wedding just seems a little pointless…”
Iruka shrugged a little apologetically. “It would be nothing but a ceremony.”
Naruto and Sakura looked at them for a bit before Naruto leaned toward Sakura and said, “Now I feel kind of dumb for getting married.”
That earned him a slap.

The idea I had for Notevember day 8 was a poem I wrote that I was going to write sort of a soundtrack for, and I just never ended up doing that, so here's the poem.
Dawn, November 9, 2016: I woke up in my childhood house that was no longer home. I needed to get out; I walked the dog. Mom had attempted to reassure me just hours before as I'd sat sobbing on the couch: "We've survived bad presidents before." Not everyone survived. Mom would die of cancer less than two years later; I guess she didn't survive. Outside the air was harsh and cold and brittle. Dead leaves blew over the hard earth and concrete. Lola nosed around in the barren bushes. Nothing was real. Nothing was real.
Dawn, November 6, 2024: I now inhabit the basement of a condo, still not home. I have work today; no time to wallow, no dog to walk; I left Lola behind when I moved here. At work I will recite the liturgy of customer service, smiling eyes over the mask that I still wear, a reminder of those who didn't survive the last time. Outside the air is misty, too warm for this late hour of the year. Dead leaves have piled up, windswept from a nearby tree, against the garage, along the front walk, damp from the recent rain. Nothing is real. Nothing is real.
The numbness in my soul rebels against the passage of time, but there is a dawn now before me, and there will be another one tomorrow.

Honestly? Idk if I'll do it or not but a concept at least for a November challenge (for those able- absolutely figure out alternatives if you need, I'm well aware this isn't going to be for everyone! This is just coming from my experiences with different writing modes):
Notebook November. (Notevember, even)
Get yourself one of those classic composition notebooks or spiral bounds, 70-100 pages, snag a basic pen, and just... fill it up.
Brainstorming? Coherent story? Notes on everyday life, conversation snippets, practice bits, doodling or scrapbooking to Get A Vibe? Anything goes - just aim to fill up the book by November 30th.
Idk. I've been finding this year that I really do just get into a bit of a different space w/pen and paper vs typing, and it could be fun having the focus be less on a round number vs 'hey you physically filled up a notebook'.
I also am fully certain I'm far from the first person to think this up 😂

Today was a lesson in copy/pasting and quantizing! Just a little vibe groove. Since my favorite color is orange, I decided to write something that felt orange. Does it feel orange to you?
Again, would love some prompts for what kind of music to write this month, so if you’ve got any ideas, just chuck em in the comments :)
