It's raining jql! Hang onto your butts because this is a jam-packed post. We now have three shows airing weekly on Gaga, plus several fan subbers making our dreams come true. What a time to be alive.

Takara's Treasure

I love them, your honor. This show is from the same directing and screenwriting team as Our Dining Table, so it should come as no surprise that the characters immediately endeared themselves to me. Taishin is a lonely boy still mourning the death of his beloved pet bird and latching on to the senior who was kind to him in his low moment. Takara is a reserved tsundere who seems a bit taken aback by this weird kid who followed him to university, but Taishin's sincerity and gentleness is working on him already. It doesn't hurt that Taishin is not faking his interest in the things Takara loves, that boy is an amateur botanist. This one is going to be so much fun, and almost certainly make me cry. Can't wait!

I Hear the Sunspot

These two already own my heart. I loved that we took the time to get to know Kohei better at this early stage and understand how isolated and excluded he has felt since he began experiencing hearing loss. He needed someone loud and straightforward and unapologetic like Taichi to barrel into his life and pull him back out of his shell again. I was so relieved when Taichi confronted him immediately about his avoidance and cleared up the idea that he only wants to see him when he's being fed. The joy I felt seeing Kohei laugh and finally relax and play a simple game of basketball with his peers was immense. I could gaze at his smiling face all day.

Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko

Holy shit, I love this show! We begin our story with a makeover, and it only gets better from there. Adapted from a manga, this is an age gap office romance between an experienced lesbian and the purportedly straight junior who is in love with her. Hiroko is everyone's favorite boss at work, but she keeps her private life separate, so her colleagues have no idea she spends her nights at the local lesbian bar or that before work got so busy, she was a consummate party girl. Ayaka fell for her after an act of kindness, and she is on a mission to get Hiroko to take her seriously, but her perceived straightness is getting in the way. Shenanigans ensue! This show is charming as hell and so genuinely funny, and Hiroko is an instant fav.

Bonus: Ossan no pantsu ga nandatte ii janai ka

Episode 9 has is now available on @isaksbestpillow's blog, and besties, Daichi and Madoka are getting married!!! The way I lost my entire shit when this happened, you have no idea. I was carrying on so much I had @bengiyo worried something terrible happened, but THE VERY BEST THING HAPPENED.

Ahem. This was another fantastic episode! Makoto accompanied Mika to the Random show, where he developed his very own bias and a newfound respect for the power of kpop. Mika got to share the story of how her fandom saved her in a low moment, Moe and Makoto had a heart to heart about her lack of desire for romantic partnership and the expectations he should let go of, and the entire family is getting along so much better than we could have dreamed a few short months ago. And just as the fam was headed out for parfaits, Daichi appeared and expressed his own desire for a family, Madoka took the hint from the universe and proposed, and we all collectively held our breath and cried and cheered when Daichi said yes. What a fantastic show, I really cannot believe this drama exists.

Top 10 Cozy BLs!

Our Dating Sim made me realize we have a new sub genre of BLs happening right now: the cozy BL. 

I decided to invent/identify/name this new BL category because... I can. I crowd sourced (here in the hellhole) opinions of how to define it and what should go on it. The collective brainstormed and elected the following qualifications: 

low angst 

low stakes 

high domesticity 

a central relationship that is more cute than anything else

extra points for found family

AKA BLs that make you feel happy and comfortable. 

These BLs leave you feeling warm and safe, like a hot water bottle. I will list them in order of my personal preference when in the mood for “cozy.”

1. Our Dating Sim 

(Korea, Viki) 

Did I create this list for this show? Yes I did. It defines this category. It is a very low stakes, high domesticity, extremely warm and gentle second chance at love office romance. 

This is a fuzzy blanket of a story that perfectly suited KBL’s short-length tendencies. The pacing is... muuuuuah... chef’s kiss. 

2. Seven Days 

(Japan, grey in 2 parts Seven Days: Monday - Thursday | Seven Days - Friday - Sunday) 

 Popular first year Seiryo has a policy of going out with any girl who asks… for one week. On a lark, third year Yuzuru tests to see if that policy also applies to boys. Seiryo agrees that it does. Along the way they accidentally fall in love. Possibly my favorite BL of all time. It’s very gentle with us and its characters while still having that Japanese emo edge to it. 

A master class in quite yet riveting cinema. 

What, you doubted me? OF COURSE it’s on the list

3. My School President

(Thailand, YouTube)

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORED this, and that’s partly what makes it so comforting. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? 

4. See You After Quarantine?

(Taiwan, Viki) 

Be you never expected lockdown to be comforting? This under appreciated gem is Taiwan’s answer to Gameboys and is just as charming and adorable yet still as quintessentially Taiwanese as one might hope. It features a Japanese love interest and the cutest most confused disaster gay. Slow burn because the two have almost no actual screen time together and yet manage some truly amazing chemistry plus sweetly caring and earnest. Honestly how does Taiwan do it?

5. Ingredients 

(Thailand, YouTube) 

At the time (during lockdown) many of us referred to this as our “emotional support grocery store advertisement.” If all you want is two soft boys being domestic, cooking together, cuddling on the couch, cat sitting, and babysitting - just put this on and be comfy.

6. What Did You Eat Yesterday?

(Japan, grey) 

Basically the grown up version of Ingredients. Emotionally repressed, grumpy, salary man shows his hair dresser husband his love by cooking amazing meals. That’s it, that’s the whole show. There some queer fam drama, and blood-fam coming out drama, but mostly is husbands cooking and eating together and it’s great. Is it BL? Not really. Do we care? Not really. 

7. The New Employee

(Korea, Viki) 

This one is queer comfort, explicitly. If you aren’t queer you might not find it as warm and engaging. A near pitch perfect office BL with conflict derived from that setting. Also featuring found family and a lesbian bestie. Sweet & innocent (and out) Seung Hyun scores the office internship of his dreams. On his first day at work he gets into it with his cool reserved (and also v gay) boss. 

As you do. 

But things get romantic pretty darn quickly. 

As you gay. 

8. En of Love: Tossera & Future the series

(Thailand, YouTube) 

Tossera = Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes, yes they are.

Future is... exactly the same thing. 

Are we mad about it? 

Nope. 

9. Oxygen 

(Thailand, YouTube) 

Softest seme in the universe sings his affection to the older boy at the cafe. Let the slow burn courting commence. Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. It’s a hyung romance (younger boy courts older boy) but very very earnest about it. Am I biased? Sure. This is probably one of my biggest comfort watches. 

10. Our Dining Table 

(Japan, Gaga)

Lonely salaryman and talented cook gets accidentally adopted by a college kid and his little brother. It’s a quiet cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me with the best of what Japan can do (like Restart After Come Back Home), it’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, it’s OK with me, but not totally BL.

For me one of the hallmarks of cozy BL is that as a chronic rewatcher I find myself starting to rewatch these ones even as they are still airing. Oxygen was an icon of this (also my first watch-along and the reason I realized I really had a passion for BL)

Boys Lockdown (YouTube) - actually on this list because it go so many votes by everyone else, I haven’t watched it. 

My Ride (GaGa) - Thai BL grew up with this pulp - a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine AKA a cinnamon roll couple. Mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple. Full review.

Cherry Magic (Japan, indie subbed) AKA Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni narerurashii - the sweetest, fluffiest, most charming bit of adorable ever, full of found family and pastry and serious slapstick, the characters are utter spazzes, but so cute about it. Still that aspect makes me a little tense so I don’t find it as cozy as others do.

DNA Says Love You (Gaga) - particularly the last few episodes. 

La Cuisine (GaGa) - sweet and kind of pure show, and like Thai desserts perhaps requires too much patience for a layperson. Because of the pacing and the focus on the bad girl character, I did dock it. But if you like stuff in the Oxygen vein, then this show is for you, and far better than most Thai BL pulps. That said, I suspect that I enjoyed it more than many would. Full review.

Plus when they were together, they were ridiculously soft. But it also had a realistic portrayal of university life, bisexual awakening, and friendship groups. Ending is okay but a victim of lockdown.

STAR TREK UPDATE TIME. friday we FINALLY kicked off ds9 season 4 with "way of the warrior" pts i & ii and oh my godddd:

firstly, i miss sisko''s hair. the beard looks GREAT it's a HUGE improvement but i miss his hair!! i also kinda miss kira's really butch cut. jadzia's hair is still touch and go...important ds9 topics

drilling changeling combat with odo is SO fun. but like also, such a dramatic turn from like, s1, when he pretends to be objects and doesn't want anyone to remember he can do this, because he wants to be able to spy on them. it's fun and funny etc but i could also write an essay about it. he's allowing his body, once a subject of scientific study that traumatized him, to be used again by his allies as a…if not subject of study again, exactly, a teaching tool. he's teaching them how to find and contain and maybe even hurt his people but at the same time HE IS USING HIMSELF TO DO IT he is ALSO TEACHING THEM HOW TO HURT HIM. yes, they're comically bad at it NOW, but they're just getting started, and it also illustrates how horrifically underprepared they are for his people to come and fuck with them at any time. i can't keep thinking about odo i'm going to make myself insane

spn has traumatized me bc i was half convinced yates was a changeling for most of this episode, since she was in and out so often. but he just gets to have a girlfriend!!! i think it's kind of a shame he never seemed to get any romantic chemistry with the rest of the cast…picard and janeway and kirk all get love interest from the main cast…but i still love watching him flirt and make eyes at this lady

the dax/worf comes on a little strong ESPECIALLY when i am still sooo :( over no riker e worf e deanna content but they ARE fun to watch. dax seems like a natural choice too since curzon was buddies with so many klingons, i just wish she was SLIGHTLY less forward...this is his first episode...give it time to breathe. maybe odo/kira and bashir/garak has just got me stuck on slow burns for ds9

i do like worf's position here too…he's always stuck in the middle of klingon and starfleet bullshit. it sucks that he got racially profiled YET AGAIN but at least sisko was like "and you absolutely do NOT have to do this" instead of putting on the pressure like picard talking to a bajoran. also, him starting a bar fight on purpose was great

i missed gowran. his eyes are so huge. i didn't always really care when he showed up in tng but somehow he and his enormous eyes have become really special to me. same genre of character as dukat i think

at first i thought sisko was dadding worf a little and maybe he was a TINY bit but i also think it's nice that he's just seeing himself in worf and trying to help him out. i liked all of their conversations a lot because sometimes people are weird about worf being klingon and sisko was actually totally normal and respectful about it. he would never be like worf kill yourself. never.

sisko was SO good in this ep i love when he bends the rules also. getting measured for a new suit and letting garak overhear shit on purpose is very clever but at the same time he's not even trying to be subtle. he knows the right thing to do isn't always following the rule book and he's not even pretending he can do both. unlike PICARD. i think he went bald to flex on picard actually like he does do it better love and light to sir patrick stewart

bashir advising his little guys in the infirmary…please he's so in charge. i also loved him and odo very earnestly wishing each other safety int eh upcoming attack. THEY'RE FRIENDS!!!!!

dukat and sisko were gay this whole episode. i think very seriously there should be a sisko/dukat movement just like there's a bashir/garak movement. i didn't think much of dukat first but i like him more every time i see him. he's just really funny and also gay

quark and garak talking about the cloying qualities of humanity over root beer ??? that was also gay. again, quark in this episode…a breath of fresh air. for once he's just being the fun kind of horrible. also when he wanted to defend his bar and rom stole his weapon lol "i will kill him" "with what?" i love odo sm

i love that kira pointed out the irony of her saving and GETTING STABBED for the cardassian government. times have CHANGED WORF LOOKS GREAT IN RED! he's not head of security anymore but i like that he gets a thinker's job…"worf is a big ugly dumb brute" jokes were OLD AND TIRED on tng!!!

anyway, s4 seems amazing so far. it's almost everything i already liked about ds9 but much more serious and funny at the same time. i will miss the post-war atmosphere since we're not mid-war again but i am really excited to see where it goes

In fact, they interact on semi-regular basis. There's clearly still something between them, but neither feels like they can or should pursue those feelings at this point.

So they just awkwardly navigate around each other :p

I like the idea that neither of them is particularly bitter or nasty towards each other.

Like, Max was hurt by her, emotionally, but he also understands the circumstances weren't right and it's likely they wouldn't have worked out in the long run. She dealt with her own issues, and he gets that, so there's no real bad blood between them.

Kind of like meeting the right person at the wrong time.

And maybe seeing her again stirs up... something. But he doesn't feel like there's anything to pursue anymore. There is also the underlying thought that, if they did try and pursue it, would it only be because he's a boy now? Would she have taken him as a girl? He'll never know. It doesn't really matter, anyway. He's happily committed to his ""wife"".

Meanwhile I think it would be funny if his old fling actually turned out to have been a lesbian the whole time (just severely closeted/in denial about it), and the reason she's so awkward around him now is because she still finds him hot, in a way, because of how she remembers him in the past. So she's not actually interested in him as how he is now, but there's still that underlying attraction to Max as a person because of what they had years ago.

And neither of them bring these ideas up because they just kinda wanna push past it and try to be friends. (Casual friends. Like they aren't besties. More like drinking buddies.)

The fact that Golbez was tricked into truly believing he was saving his world from an ongoing larger tragedy, and that it's a Watcher who keeps Balance of Shards in check... man is the Watcher himself sundered then? Much as Nemi still resents him for what he's done to Azdaja, but his desperation reflects how much the Ascians' cruelty tied everyone's hands. Of course he's acting differently now that he knows another way exists, one that wouldn't exist if not for the longer struggled of the Source up to the rewritten Eight Umbral Calamity...

I have no screencaps for the sequence, but I will say I loved everything except, not getting to quite hear Zero's friendship-no-jutsu with Golbez directly. It's just funny Nemi struggled like that while the gang was having a deep anime moment and the resolution was very satisfying, specially with Vrtra sacrificing literal half of his great power as a dragon to heal his traumatized sister, returning the care she gave him as a dragonet

Maria and Val’s relationship dynamic!!!!!

Maria and Valkyrie have a really interesting dynamic that is probably my top five favorite dynamics I've ever written. In part, because their relationship and how each of them views the relationship changes drastically throughout their story. I also love it because of how much it ties into their (especially Maria's) backstories.

To start, Maria's been in the sketchy, dark, parts of the city ever since she was a small child. She grew up in a poor family and eventually joined the movement lead by the holder of the Dark Saber (the movement is currently unnamed, I think.) to make ends meet. The holder of the Dark Saber announced that he would take on an apprentice who would be chosen through a series of trials. Maria and her best friend both wanted this so much that they agreed they'd both participate, but neither would take the apprenticeship. They both got to the very end, but her bestie ended up betraying her and nearly killing her and eventually taking over the Dark Saber when the old holder passed away.

Cut to Valkyrie who's always been literally destined to be 'the hero'. She's fated to take down the Dark Saber, and her loveline reads "You Get The Girl" (Unless we changed it). However, she's married to one of her best friends, Onyx, who is definitely not a girl, and who she's pretty sure is in love with their mutual friend, Killian, who's fated to be the villain (more specifically, to cause her death). When she meets Maria, she's angry because she hates all the attention she gets for being the hero that she doesn't want to be and she's just run away from her husband who she never loved in that way (they married because his loveline said they would.) because suprise, she's actually lesbian. Maria, considerably bitter at the world finds Val in the midst of her mental crisis and befriends her, hoping to use her instability to take down her worst enemy, the current holder of the Dark Saber. She convinces Val that she doesn't have to follow her fate. After all, what are the fates going to do? Kill her? That's Killian's job, isn't it?

Overtime, Maria's anger cools as she realizes she's actually falling for Val and maybe she can forget her old life if it means sharing a new one with Val. But by this time, Valkyrie has already completed her fate without thinking about it by taking down the holder of the Dark Saber, claiming for herself and establishing the Dark Throne firmly placing herself in #VillainStatus. Their relationship (now dating) turns into an extremely loving one, surprisingly healthy considering they're the villains of this story. When Val dies at the end, Maria is completely torn apart, not only because she lost the love of her life, but because she lost someone dear to her directly because of the accursed Dark Saber again. What initially started as a manipulation tactic grows into a love more fierce than I have ever written before.

I really love these characters and their dynamic because it does this funny thing where it gives Maria redemption, but at the exact same time, turns her into the world's second biggest villain and I think that's really cool.

Context: 2010, pt. 1

Turns out a lot happened in 2010, so we'll break this one out a bit.

My memory of 2010 is hazy in multiple places, so I'm not sure I have the exact order of these events right, but these are the key points coming to me:

My first boyfriend and I broke up, and he immediately began seeing one of the other girls in the friend group, who he also lived with. This led to a rift in the friend group in which I retained the vast majority of our mutual friends, whereas the couple did not.

I began seeing boyfriend number 2, but the boyfriend part lasted a month and was followed by a semester of fwb and confusion on my part. I learned a lot, though.

I entered my Hot Girl Phase (TM) which is an important turning point. It's when I started to live, I think.

I attempted to do therapy but ultimately bailed in a panic.

For the first little bit of 2010, I don't have many specific memories. I turned 19, presumably did a bunch of school stuff that I'm not remembering right now, and I went to my first convention (PAX East).

Exit First Boyfriend, Pursued by Glares

More consumingly, over the first half of the year my relationship with my first boyfriend steadily deteriorated. Some of it, I think, was our respective depressions worsening and colliding, but not all of it.

He and my bestie shared an apartment with two other friends, one of whom departed for medical reasons not long into the lease, his spot being taken by another friend of theirs. We'll call these two roommates Sleepy and Sassy, with Sassy being the subletter.

Over the course of the lease, my boyfriend and Sleepy were becoming closer and closer, which would have been fine and normal except that the two of them began to behave strangely toward the rest of us, and often the strangeness was meanness wearing a "It's just a joke" hat.

One time my bestie, who at the time identified a cis woman and lesbian, came home to find that my boyfriend and Sleepy had plastered the apartment in pictures of dicks taken from porn as a prank. While for me that would have been funny, for my bestie it read as targeted, homophobic harassment--which it was. Boyfriend 1 and Sleepy chose those images specifically because they knew it would make Bestie uncomfortable. When Bestie got upset, my the two "pranksters" friend framed it as my bestie not being able to take a joke.

Several times, I stayed over at their apartment and had odd conversations with my boyfriend in which he was very insistent that it was inevitable that I would make a suicide attempt. Where at one time I may have found a discussion of suicide with him comforting in that I could feel understood, the way these conversations occurred made me indignant. It very much had a tone of hopeless resignation, like no matter what I did or said it was completely inevitable and if I thought it wasn't then I was fooling myself. I won't say that he wanted me to make an attempt, but there were times when it felt that way.

Eventually there came a month in which, whenever I visited the apartment and found myself alone with my boyfriend and Sleepy, I felt like the third wheel. Persistently. Every time. Something was off, but I couldn't tell what, or at the least I didn't let myself put a name to it.

At the end of that month, I arrived at the apartment to visit per plans we'd made. When I got there, Boyfriend 1 wanted to talk, and, lo, he broke up with me.

Obviously that was upsetting in itself, but there's two pieces of that conversation that really stuck with me. The first was his reasoning: he felt I was tying him down, which he was too young for, and he couldn't live life to the fullest or go on adventures with me. That idea gave me A Bit Of A Complex, especially as I went on to encounter repeated situations in which men I'd been intimate with left our relationship or arrangement only once they'd found someone new.

The second aspect was that he gifted me one of his pocket knives--the one I'd previously tried to slit my wrists with. It was intended as a sweet gesture, if I remember correctly, but the longer I sat with that action, the more fucked up it seemed to me. Why give someone you know is suicidal, you're convinced will try to kill themselves, a knife when they're extremely emotionally vulnerable and about to leave your apartment by themselves? It's at best unbelievably thoughtless and at worst downright hostile.

Nonetheless, I left on relatively good terms and went home to my parents' house because I didn't want to be upset around people I didn't know very well (e.g., my dormmates). I was deeply sad, but it wasn't the end of the world (if I'm remembering correctly).

But...

That night my bestie heard, late in the night, my now ex-boyfriend exit his room and enter Sleepy's room. He didn't come out until morning, at which point Bestie heard him and Sleepy leave the bedroom together and enter the bathroom together, whereupon the shower started. It was pretty obvious what was happening.

Outraged, my bestie let me know, and the month of feeling like a third wheel suddenly made a whole lot of sense. Drama engulfed our friend group, as the lot of us turned firmly against Ex-Boyfriend 1 and Sleepy.

None of us know for sure if cheating occurred or if my ex and Sleepy literally waited until the moment he broke up with me. What we do know is that the two of them pretended to not be dating for a month before announcing it, having the audacity to claim that they waited out of respect for me--which was a lie; they hadn't waited at all. It was extremely obvious what had been going on, especially because my bestie was right there, hearing everything whether or not he wanted to.

Unfortunately most of the friend group had already signed on to a new lease in a new apartment together, including the new couple, and that lead to an uncomfortable situation in which an apartment housing some 7-ish people had an ambient and persistent distaste simmering within it at all times. Our collective disgust with the couple grew and grew until, at last, they moved out of our collective lives--but that was later.

Joker: “yolo” in its most dangerous form, def is writing a slow burn enemies to loves fic about him and Batman. Gay and homophobic 💯 The other rogues don’t invite him to pride celebrations anymore cause he’ll keep calling people slurs “as a joke”. Him and Edward have longterm beef, like schoolgirl levels of petty drama.

Harley Quinn: would describe herself as a “girlboss” unironically while committing heinous crimes. tweeted “clowns aren’t funny” after breaking up with Joker (ended up causing a huge scandal). The OG “I can fix him” girl. Is sort of the rogues free underground therapist (god knows they need it) cause they can’t get professional help without being sent to Arkham.

Poison Ivy: Breaking News: Cottagecore lesbian commits mass murder cause her plant wilted. She’s what republicans think environmentalists are. Would get in a fist fight with that vegan teacher cause “plants have feelings too”. Has beef with most of the male rogues, supports ‘kill all men’ without realizing it’s a joke (she prefers ‘kill all humans’ but figured she had to downgrade because the Gotham city sirens are humans technically).

Cat Woman: “OH NO! It appears I’ve gotten stuck backwards in the bank vault step-Bat 😏😏😏😏😏😏, looks like I’m not stealing any more diamonds today 😰😩”. Mad respect for Selina, she just wants diamonds and bat dick, no tragic backstory or complex motivations needed. I personally like to headcanon her as wearing a straight up cat costume (ears and a tail like a true furry) cause it’s way funnier to imagine a sophisticated rich woman dressing up as a cat to steal shit than whatever bullshit DCs up to these days. Scarecrow: That one guy who gets angry at people because “Halloween costumes are meant to be scary 🤬😡😑😒”. Doesn’t even attempt to express emotions, is the human embodiement of this emoji: 😐. His presence is more jarring than threatening, his intimidation levels are somehow underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. The other rogues have collectively decided that he’s asexual under no assumption other than that they don’t want to imagine Jonathan having sex. Overtime Jonathan has become basically fearless (he smokes his own fear gas like vape just to feel something). Jonathan and Harley became good friends when they both worked in Arkham, their dynamic is surprisingly wholesome.

The Riddler: Didn’t get hugged enough as a child and is now making it everyone’s problem. Would hold a bank hostage to show Batman his third grade spelling bee medal. Is the only autistic rogue that gets accommodations in Arkham because he won’t stop bugging the guards. FTM trans ofc (his names Edward Nygma for Christ's sake). He ran away from home at seventeen and faked his own death (his deadname is legally dead lmao). Uses the terms “alpha, beta, and omega male” unironically.

Two Face: “Yeah, I mean, I didn’t wanna blow up the orphanage either, but Y’know the coin said-” The other rogues talk to Harvey as if he’s constantly at his breaking point, which is half true. Harv is a stone cold mf, he’s the rock that’s holding Two Face together tbh. Edward calls Harvey and Harv Jekyll and Hyde cause he’s that original. All the rogues have at least a sneaking suspicion that Bruce Wayne is batman and use Harvey as their little primary source (being ex besties and everything), until they find out Selina and Bruce are a thing of course. No matter how much evidence he’s faced with Harvey will never accept Bruce Wayne is batmam, he’s not ready to consider that one of the only positive people in his life has been duking it out with him this whole time.

Penguin: He’s the rest of the rogues chill gay gangster uncle I don’t make the rules. The iceberg lounge is like the Batman villain equivalent of The Central Perk from friends (aka: its their default place to hangout). Oswald always makes a fuss about them not making reservations ahead of them but at this point it’s just performative. Everyone’s 99% sure Oswald and Edward fucked at some point (Edward always makes a show of flustering Oswald when he needs a loan). Ossie always takes care of the others belongings when they’re in Arkham (he has a special place in his heart for Jonathan‘s crows).

The Mad Hatter: I love Jervis lmao he just really likes Alice in Wonderland and that’s a valid ass villain motivation 👍. One of the smartest rogues but doesn’t get enough credit because of how childish he is. He dresses in kids clothes, not just because he wants to but because he’s small af and can’t fit in shit. In public while the rogues are undercover Jervis usually wears a beanie or a baseball cap (he’d get spotted instantly if he wore his usual, but on bad days Jervis can’t bear to be without a hat). Jonathan and Jervis play chess a lot together in Arkham, and frequently engage in intellectual discussion, Edward tends to be a piss baby when Jon encourages him to do the same, he’s not ready to accept the reality that Jervis can match his intelligence.

Killer Croc: Waylon has a surprising amount in common with Jonathan, they share southern solidarity. He doesn’t travel out of the sewer often so the rogues will occasionally come to visit Waylon there (Edward always makes sure to complain loudly about the smell). Will show immense affection and loyalty to anyone who treats him as human (poor guy just needs a friend ☹️).

Mr Freeze: Literally just dead inside, someone give this poor bastard a hug. Victor stands as the most awkward rogue, he‘s sorta like the odd one out. The other rogues don’t interact with him that often because he’s sort of a party pooper. He’s the straight friend on thin ice, haha get it. Mr Freeze is my sisters favorite Batman villain because she thought the ice puns were funny in Batman in Robin, little does she know I’m embarrassing myself on tumblr in her glory.

Music Meister: So many of the Gotham rogues have horrible childhood trauma and Music Meister is just like “people bullied me for being a theater kid 😩😭💔😔”. In all honesty he’s iconic, in my au universe thingy I have him join the dork squad latter on and he sticks out like a sore thumb for a bit. I’m talking about my Forzen headcannons!!

- Forzen can’t control his teleporting. He will simply get teleported somewhere at random. However, he usually can’t leave until he finishes something, like in a video game where you have to complete an objective before you can leave. And usually he doesn’t know what this is so he just has to fuck around and find out.

- Forzen is Dr Coomers son (shout out to that one post that brought this headcannon up, if I find it I will link back to it). However, neither of them know this. BUT both of them have more knowledge on each other than they should. One of coomers wife’s left him way before he man knew she was pregnant.

- butch lesbian. I am allowed to be self indulgent and headcannon him as a butch lesbian (he’s also gender apathetic and uses he/they/she/it pronouns)

- He’s shit at video games. Plays them. Is bad. Always blames the controller. Has broken many.

-Forzen was probably part of some fucked up Military experiments as a kid.

-It’s actually SUPER good with kids. Like it can get a crying baby to calm down within 5 minutes every time.

-she has a half brother, he’s called Jeremy and is like 10 years old. He’s a super smart nerd and is the reason Forzen hasn’t actually died by doing something extremely stupid. Forzen really cares for her brother, very protective of him.

- her relationship with the science team isn’t TOO bad, but they are all kinda waiting for Tommy to forgive her before anything, and Tommy does NOT like Forzen. At least for a while. Eventually they make up (and then they make out)

-they have quiet a few tattoos, most of which are not done professionally. When they eventually make up with the science team , they let them draw tattoos on their back. Benrey absolutely drew a penis to try annoy them but Forzen thought it was funny.

- Benrey and Forzen are exs. They broke up for a really stupid reason as well. They started dating, Benrey assumed Forzen was a gay dude and Forzen assumed Benrey was some weird lesbian. They assumed wrong. And only found out like a year into the relationship, they’d probably moved in together and everything. Now they are super sour about eachother.

-I think Forzen would actually get on well with Gordon.The two will stay up late talking, Forzen kinda has no filter and Gordon has gotten so sick of everyone’s shit that they are just super honest at this point and give eachother advice. It’s definitely a little gay too but only the rest of the science team actually realises this.

- I’ve said this already but sunkist and Forzen are BESTIES. Like Forzen probably apologised to Sunkist , and like he genuinely felt super bad and you could tell and so sunkist gives him and a chance and turns out they get on super well. Sunkist will go to his place and they’ll sit and watch irate gamer videos. Sunkist is also somehow better at video games at him. She always wins in Mario kart.

-Darnold and Forzen…their just gay man. I could make an entire post about these two’s relationship alone. Darnold probably tried to stop Forzen from taking sunkist, (it was very open about dognapping her) but Forzen just laughed, called them cute, and left.

- they love going to the gym me thinks.

- Sad ahead wuhoh. Forzen will sometimes not be able to sleep because of chronic pain. Turns out being in the military can kinda fuck up your body. It’s one of the few times she will cry. She probably sits up silently sobbing to herself, not only because everything hurts (and medicine that hasn’t been prescribed can only do so much) , but also because she knows her days of like, still being able to function normally with0 help is limited and she doesn’t wanna bother anyone by asking for help, but she kinda needs it.

Like I'm obviously not referring to the drama angst city tragedy portion of the story which appeals to all audiences I think fairly similarly as some action suspense sad drama thriller. But like the other parts like. You are best friends with some host guy hotties. You save his life. You run a cabaret club and think of them as family. I'm guessing maybe ur supposed to crush on Said cabaret girls but you also play dress up with them and make them look super Cool. Now ur befriending them. Oh your head girl definitely has a crush on the cabaret owner lady u work for. Head girl may be bi. Join the club babe it's me and majima and we are having a phenomenal time.

Yakuza pretty much codes who's good ish or not by how hot a man they are, with only a few exceptions. Ryuji Goda is a man u wanna RIDE and ur telling me a straight man sees him and isn't overwhelmed with facing how HOT ur new enemy is? Then there's daigo the typical hot guy of 2006, Again Majima who's just walking nonstop eyecandy flirting with you the player character. Stripping for you even. There's even a hottie for various ages, Kazes energy alone was angling for Attitude and ripping off his shirt, Nishitani is a Lot but part of its magnetism even Majima got charmed by and wanted to copy. If u like men it is a nonstop fest of hotties. Then if you're a straight girl? While like I said there's a parade of hot men, there's also a Lot of cute girls. While kiryu is fairly non romance centric which I find really nice (saying you can go out on a date with a friend without being in a relationship, the entire cabaret minigame with him tending to involve befriending and getting slice of life stories more than anything else, his adamance to reject any romantic proposal generally in sidestories) you're still hanging out with a ton of cute girls. Even if you ignore the cabaret minigames completely (which I like the girls life story plots so :/ you'd have to skip those and the fun dress up games) then there's still the erotic video and photo places which just throw boobs at you to no tomorrow. And some of that's not optional if you wanna do certain sidestories (tho tbh a lot of its funny in a detached way when ur feeling like kiryu and going ??? What do you mean an anteater can eat a human that can't be true?!).

Just like. As a bi person I'm like ah yes gratuitous fanservice everywhere all over the place. But if ur straight wtf is it even like? I Assume it's like... 50 percent fanservice and then 50 percent just kinda pushing thru the sexy bits absolutely not aimed at u. You'd think tje sexy men would be easier to ignore but I cannot overstate how much ALL the main cast is generally hot men, and if u want full enjoyment of the game u let urself pick up on the homoerotic overtones shoveled on there as well as just fully appreciating they made someone as pretty as Tachibana, and just like. Fuck. The way one of the goals is digging into masculinity and how it's defined and questioning it and what it means to who, means even fuckers like Sagawa you're forced to realize what majima may admire about him, Kaze you're forced to admire what kiryu acknowledged as admirable of him to be so tenacious. That odas horrific but kiryu still grew emotionally close to him. That Tachibana was loved as dearly in kiryus way, as makoto was cared about by majima. That the way kiryu loves nishiki and yuki is deep and life long for him. That the way majima cares about his cabaret girl family is likely similar to how he feels about his valued underlings now. That kazamas a fucking monster but he also had a kind of love for all his kids that happened imperfectly but affected everything. How daigos feelings of his dad, of his rivals, affect him now and all of tojo clan. How ryuji used to care so deep for barely friends so his upfront brutality has to have a fucking motive. How even rhe cops I could care less for, the writing itself is trying to dig into who they love, what drives them, what defines every fucking man on screen (and sayama who's in a way parallel to kiryu, nishiki, yuki, and a lot of the orphan with murdered parents the games like to parallel). This game is SO driven by what men love and care for and their feelings, it's the center of the more dramatic heavy story portion. That like idk if you're trying so hard to only interpret it in the least caring way with the shallower of relationships, you're missing so much.

In short like I know majority audiences are probs straight and so these games manage to appeal anyway. Just like being bi and playing it is like nonstop nice story and/or fanservice without much break. And its odd to me that like that amount of indulgence is my experience but who knows for who else. (Then there's also the matter of I don't think it's intentionally made to appeal so much so that's luck almost but also another topic entirely)
