Gemini South observes ultra-hot nova erupting with surprising chemical signature

Astronomers uncover extremely hot and violent eruption from first ever near-infrared analysis of a recurrent nova outside of the Milky Way Galaxy

Nova explosions occur in binary star systems in which a white dwarf — the dense remnant of a dead star — continually siphons stellar material from a nearby companion star. As the outer atmosphere of the companion gathers onto the surface of the white dwarf it reaches temperatures hot enough to spark an eruption.

Almost all novae discovered to-date have been observed to erupt only once. But a few have been observed to erupt more than once, and are classified as recurrent novae. The span between eruptions for these novae can vary from as little as one year to many decades [1].

Less than a dozen recurrent novae have been observed within our Milky Way Galaxy, while far more are extragalactic, meaning located outside of the Milky Way. Studying extragalactic novae helps build astronomers’ understanding of how different environments affect nova eruptions.

The first recurrent extragalactic nova to be observed was LMC 1968-12a (LMC68), located in the Large Magellanic Cloud — a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. This nova has a recurrent timescale of about four years — the third-shortest of any nova — and consists of a white dwarf and a companion red subgiant (a star much larger than the Sun). It was discovered in 1968 and its eruptions have been observed fairly regularly since 1990.

Its most recent eruption, in August 2024, was first captured by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, which has been closely monitoring the nova every month since its 2020 eruption. Given its known recurrent timescale, astronomers were anticipating this eruption, and LMC68 delivered right on cue.

Follow-up observations were conducted nine days after the initial outburst with the Carnegie Institution’s Magellan Baade Telescope, and 22 days after the initial outburst with the Gemini South telescope, one half of the International Gemini Observatory, funded in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation and operated by NSF NOIRLab.

Using the technique of spectroscopy [2], the team observed LMC68’s near-infrared light, which allowed them to study the nova’s ultra-hot phase during which many elements have been highly energized. By studying this phase astronomers can learn about the most extreme processes at play in the eruption. This study is the first ever near-infrared spectroscopic observation of an extragalactic recurrent nova.

After its initial eruption LMC68’s light faded rapidly, but Gemini South’s FLAMINGOS-2 instrument still captured a strong signal from ionized silicon atoms, specifically silicon atoms that have been stripped of nine of their 14 electrons, which requires incredible amounts of energy in the form of radiation or violent collisions.

In the earlier spectrum from Magellan, the near-infrared light from just the ionized silicon alone shined 95 times brighter than the light emitted by the Sun added up across all its wavelengths (X-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, and radio). When Gemini observed the line several days later the signal had faded, but the silicon emission still dominated the spectrum.

“The ionized silicon shining at almost 100 times brighter than the Sun is unprecedented,” says Tom Geballe, NOIRLab emeritus astronomer and co-author of the paper appearing in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. “And while this signal is shocking, it’s also shocking what’s not there.”

Novae found in the Milky Way typically emit numerous near-infrared signatures from highly-excited elements, but LMC68’s spectra contained only the ionized silicon feature. “We would’ve expected to also see signatures of highly energized sulfur, phosphorus, calcium and aluminum,” says Geballe.

“This surprising absence, combined with the presence and great strength of the silicon signature, implied an unusually high gas temperature, which our modeling confirmed,” adds co-author Sumner Starrfield, Regents Professor of Astrophysics at Arizona State University.

The team estimates that, during the nova’s early post-explosion phase, the temperature of the expelled gas reached 3 million degrees Celsius (5.4 million degrees Fahrenheit), making it one of the hottest novae ever recorded. This extreme temperature suggests a highly violent eruption, which the team theorizes is due to the conditions of the nova’s environment.

The Large Magellanic Cloud and its stars have a lower metallicity than the Milky Way, meaning it contains a lower abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, referred to as metals by astronomers. In high-metallicity systems, heavy elements trap heat on the white dwarf’s surface such that eruptions occur early in the accretion process. But without these heavy elements, more matter builds up on the white dwarf’s surface before it gets hot enough to ignite, causing the explosion to erupt with far greater violence. Additionally, the expelled gas collides with the atmosphere of the companion red subgiant, causing a huge shock that elevates the temperatures in the collision.

Prior to collecting their data, Starrfield predicted that the accretion of low-metallicity material onto a white dwarf would result in a more violent nova explosion. The observations and analysis presented here are broadly in agreement with that prediction.

“With only a small number of recurrent novae detected within our own galaxy, understanding of these objects has progressed episodically,” says Martin Still, NSF program director for the International Gemini Observatory. “By broadening our range to other galaxies using the largest astronomical telescopes available, like Gemini South, astronomers will increase the rate of progress and critically measure the behavior of these objects in different chemical environments.”

[Day 6] Wax Play

Character: Flame Princess Tags: NSF/W, Male!Reader, Reader is a flame person, Established Relationship, Queen x Knight, Waxplay, Fluff, Smut with feelings, PIV Smut Word count: 1418 Synopsis: Everyone in the fire kingdom know about the two knight that protect the Flame Queen who regained her father's throne as she became of age, but what people don't know is why the queen is so fond of candles. A/N: I won't lie, it's been kind of challenging writing smut for female characters. It's not my strength but that's why i wanted to start with them because i could use the practice, surprisingly enough this one is my favorites of the main cast category. It has a nice balance of set up, banter and fluff within the smut.

There's not a single citizen in the fire kingdom that doesn't know about the loyal knights that protect the Flame Queen, the underestimated yet honorable Cinnamon Bun and the ruthless knight that covers himself in soot and ash from the queen's enemies. One stays beside Flame Princess's side during the day, while the other keeps watch at night.

Phoebe is left exhausted after another long day of listening to petitions from her citizens and the council who are more than likely plotting against her, but she feels safe knowing not only does she has the best personal guards to company her but also because they are her most trusting friends, it's with this serenity that she walks alongside Cinnamon Bun as they discuss non royal topics.

"My queen, I bring to you a package from the lands outside of the Fire kingdom." One of her staff members approach her with a cylinder fire proof package. Cinnamon Bun's fire wolf sniffs the package first and doesn't find anything threating but even then he carefully opens it to reveal the harmless items, giving Phoebe an approving nod before handing it to her.

"Thank you, you are dismissed." Flame Princess bids the staff member away as she resumes her walk with Cinnamon bun.

By the time the sun looms on the horizon Cinnamon bun knew it was the end of his shift, he bid the queen farewell with a polite kiss to the back of her hand. "Good night your majesty, sleep well."

"You too Cinnamon bun."

Phoebe tucks the package under her arm as she continues to take the stairs up to her personal bedroom, she has long since repurposed her father's former room to her liking while her old bedroom is now a storage room, it brings back too many memories of when she was confined to her giant lamp so the last thing she wanted was to move back in there regardless if the lamp isn't there anymore. The light of her hair casts rough shadows alongside the final steps of the staircase and by the time she reaches the top the sun has completely gone down, it is between one of these harsh shadows where a figure appears seemingly manifesting out of nowhere, with his armor clad in dark ash that prevents the light's reflection to reveal his location. Without turning her head, Phoebe speaks into the room. "You should consider signing up for a hide and seek championship."

"I've considered it, but it wouldn't be fair on the other contestants." You respond with a sense of snark and confidence.

"Well, aren't you humble?" She laughs a bit, resuming her walk into her personal quarters with the knight looming behind her like a shadow. She looks more relaxed now, as if she can let go of the royal appearance she has to maintain in front of her citizens.

You dutifully follow her into her room as well, locking the door behind you as you pay your attention to the cylinder she brought into the room. "What's that?" You ask.

"Why don't you look for yourself?"

Upon her request you open the package to see a pair of rose colored candles that smelled like cinnamon and other flowers you couldn't identify at a first whiff, while others might shrug off such uninteresting items you on the other hand could feel a familiar warmth settle in the pit of your stomach, especially when Phoebe wrapped her arms around your midsection in a hug from behind. These candles are special to her, not only for the sentimental significance they already held for her but also because of the intimate secret she shared with you and only you.

"They smell nice." you comment, slowly turning around meet with Flame Princess's loving eyes.

"Wanna try them out? i could use a stress relief after the week i've been through." 

You raise her hand to the lower portion where your mouth would be but is blocked by the helmet of your armor, placing the equivalent of a kiss on the back of her hand as you say. "It'll be an honor, my queen." a title she's heard many times, but the way you say it specifically has a tender touch to it.

You remove Phoebe's royal attire with a care that not even her personal maids can match, because, unlike them, who dress and undress her out of duty, you do so with affection and reverence. Not just her body, but everything that encompasses and defines her, including her curves, the occasional freckle on her skin, the flames of her hair, and even the digits on her feet. The fact that she chose you already makes you feel honored, so you dedicate yourself to returning that love and trust in any way you can. Her clothes aren't the only ones she's discarded; she's also helped you get out of your armor, which is a little more difficult because it's designed to withstand even the most powerful attacks from burning lava and giants, but she's patient with you, removing every strap holding your chest plate and leg guards until you're free of your cinder-colored protection. Normally, being this exposed and vulnerable feels strange, even when you're naked in your own home, but not with her. Phoebe takes advantage of your freed face to caress the side of your cheek before sharing a long-awaited kiss, humming contently into the embrace. Now it's your turn to wrap your arms around Phoebe's warm body and press her against yours, almost melting into her as your shared body heat can rival that of an active volcano.

You withdraw away from her as she settles into her bed; in the meantime, you take her newly acquired candles and light them on fire while kissing the tip of the string. The wax will take some time to melt, so you may speed up the process by blowing upon them and seeing the top become liquid. Once you're happy with the quantity, you walk over to Phoebe, who is sprawled out on the sheets like a maiden in one of those fancy paintings. As you pour a small amount of the wax onto her stomach, you can't help but marvel at the way her face contours in bliss and soft gasps escape her burning lips. "Hng... please, pour more onto me, my love," she begs, and you gladly oblige. You pour more wax onto Phoebe's body, watching it sizzle as it briefly extinguishes her skin's natural flame before it lights up and consumes the substance, hardening on her in burnt crisps. It's an interesting sight, but not as interesting as Flame Princess' reactions, her moans become louder and her body twists in both pain and pleasure, in delicious agony and fired up desire, until she's crying out for you.

"What do you need my beloved queen?" you question her in that same smug tone from earlier, oh you definitely know what she wants but it needs to come out from her mouth.

"I want you, my love... I want you soo bad." she sounds utterly breathless, and you provide her the oxygen to enlarge her flames. Like the dutiful knight you are, you give the queen what she desires. Her hands grab you by the shoulders and tug you down onto her, enveloping you in her flames and you kiss her passionately. The deeper the kiss, the deeper you bury yourself in her, feeling her nails bite into your overheating skin, but it only motivates you to thrust in her faster, kneed her breasts rougher, and generally allow her to bite into your neck and leave as many marks as she wants, all the while bringing her to the closest thing she can describe as heaven.

"Haaah, my love. Promise, promise me you'll stay by my side-" Phoebe looks like she's about to cum any second, yet her stare is as intense as the flames of her hair, she holds onto your face just as tightly as her legs are wrapped around your waist.

"You have my word-" you groan, feeling her tighten around you. "Until my last... dying b-breath..." 

This is all the reassurance she needs, hugging you once more as she climaxes and cries the most unholy noises that a knight should not hear from his queen. But right now, as she falls apart due to your own doing, you're more than her knight and you seal this moment with a chaste kiss. Not the first, but also not the last.

Finding the true soulmate of yours is difficult. By the time I was 20 years old, I had 5 failed arrangement of marriages planned by my parents.

My parents were influential in the business development world, my father owns a company named TimberTech. It was a multimillion dollar company, I took over TimberTech shortly after a year ago when I was 17. I was still in Highschool, I studied in Japan for awhile before moving back to Canada.

My class was retarded bunch of idiots (oof) but one thing that makes me laugh was why the hell a girl from russia would come to Japan.

Quasar H1821+643.X-ray: NASA/CXC/Univ. of Nottingham/H. Russell et al.; Radio: NSF/NRAO/VLA; Image Processing: NASA/CXC/SAO/N. Wolk This image shows a quasar, a rapidly growing supermassive black hole, which is not achieving what astronomers would expect from it, as reported in our latest press release. Data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue) and radio data from the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky’s Very Large Array (red) reveal some of the evidence for this quasar’s disappointing impact on its host galaxy. Known as H1821+643, this quasar is about 3.4 billion light-years from Earth. Quasars are a rare and extreme class of supermassive black holes that are furiously pulling material inwards, producing intense radiation and sometimes powerful jets. H1821+643 is the closest quasar to Earth in a cluster of galaxies. Quasars are different than other supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxy clusters in that they are pulling in more material at a higher rate. Astronomers have found that non-quasar black holes growing at moderate rates influence their surroundings by preventing the intergalactic hot gas from cooling down too much. This regulates the growth of stars around the black hole. The influence of quasars, however, is not as well known. This new study of H1821+643 that quasars — despite being so active — may be less important in driving the fate of their host galaxy and cluster than some scientists might expect. To reach this conclusion the team used Chandra to study the hot gas that H1821+643 and its host galaxy are shrouded in. The bright X-rays from the quasar, however, made it difficult to study the weaker X-rays from the hot gas. The researchers carefully removed the X-ray glare to reveal what the black hole’s influence is, which is reflected in the new composite image showing X-rays from hot gas in the cluster surrounding the quasar. This allowed them to see that the quasar is actually having little effect on its surroundings. Using Chandra, the team found that the density of gas near the black hole in the center of the galaxy is much higher, and the gas temperatures much lower, than in regions farther away. Scientists expect the hot gas to behave like this when there is little or no energy input (which would typically come from outbursts from a black hole) to prevent the hot gas from cooling down and flowing towards the center of the cluster. A paper describing these results has been accepted into the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and is available online.
